Every Mother's Day that I've been fortunate to experience as a mother to my son, I get asked what I want. The problem is, what I want can not be purchased. Sure, some flowers or a mimosa would be nice , but what I really want is to not be stressed by the simple act of getting out of the house or planning a meal. That's why, this Mother's Day what I really want is time , the kind I used to take for granted.

Keep in mind, I'm not asking for time away from my kid. I genuinely feel like I get enough of that throughout the year, and my husband and I make a concerted effort to give each other personal space. While a little bit of privacy on my Mother's Day sounds great — maybe I can actually use the bathroom in peace for once — it's not what I'm talking about when I say I want more time. What I really want is for time to slow its roll and to stop feeling stressed and anxious about getting places and doing things. You know, the same kind of leisurely approach to activities that people without kids get to experience.

Weekends in my 20s were largely spent sleeping in, going to breakfast, and letting the day dictate the pace. Some Sundays would be more active than others, but largely, I had the freedom to go as fast or as slow as I wanted. I brunched , I ran, I napped, and I hung out, enjoying the sunshine and enjoying my time.

The obvious difference, of course, is that in my 20s I was child-free, and I was my own boss. Now, my day is largely controlled by my almost 3 year old, which is how it should be. As a stay-at-home mom, every day I plan events for him, trying to navigate the need for bathroom breaks, educational functions, and ways for him to get his sillies out. Before, I would just get my own butt in gear if I wanted to leave by a certain time, but with a child, I know have to plan at least an extra half hour to get him packed up, dressed, pottied, and out the door. It's stressful and often makes me feel like I have no control of time. When this happens, it's hard to remember that these days with my young one are precious .

I realize that what I'm asking for is impossible. There is no slowing of time, unless my husband has been secretly working on a time machine in our basement, but I feel like I would have heard something at this point. No, there is no way to slow time, and there isn't any way to return to the way things once were, nor would I want to. I love my life, my family, and all of those crazy moments.

So maybe it's not time that needs to slow on Mother's Day, but me. Leisurely moments can be had with a kid , where the day determines what we do, and I'm not a ball of stress trying to leave the house for any particular event. Who cares if it takes longer than I would have liked to wrestle my toddler to get his shoes on. After all, these daily struggles are part of the memories I will look back on later and miss. If my perspective changes, maybe I can trick my mind into thinking time is actually slowing down. This Mother's Day, more important than flowers or homemade pasta art, this is all I want. That, and maybe a big glass of wine .

Essay 7: 500 words

Celebrating Mom’s Day is a revered tradition that takes place in May of each year. It’s a day dedicated to honoring the essence of being a mom, the unconditional love, and the countless sacrifices that every mom makes for the well-being of her children. The role that mothers play in the lives of their children is monumental. From the very moment a child is conceived, a mother begins her journey of unconditional love.

She carries her child in her belly for nine months, providing nourishment and protection even before the child takes their first breath. The celebration of this special occasion is an opportunity to recognize her selfless dedication—a time to reflect on the unwavering support and guidance that every mom provides. It is not just a day to shower our mothers with gifts and affection; it’s a day to acknowledge the profound impact they have on our lives. It’s a day to celebrate the mother who shapes our character, who teaches us valuable life lessons, and who manages everything in our lives, often without getting tired or asking for anything in return.

A mother’s love is the foundation upon which we build our lives, and this special occasion is a testament to that enduring love. On this day, schools and communities come together to celebrate mothers. Children prepare poems, essays, and artwork to present to their mothers as tokens of their appreciation. Mothers are invited to special events, often hosted by children’s schools, where the joy and pride of being moms are celebrated with performances, speeches, and communal activities.

It’s a day when the hard work and dedication of mothers are recognized by all members of the family and society at large. In India, Mom’s Day is observed with equal enthusiasm. The day is celebrated in different ways across the country, with children and adults finding unique and heartfelt methods to acknowledge their mothers. It’s a day when the entire family comes together to pamper the matriarch, to make her feel special, and to thank her for her enduring love and care.

However, the true essence of the day goes beyond the celebrations and the fanfare. It’s a day that reminds us that one day is not enough to appreciate all that mothers do for us. It encourages us to make every day special for our mothers, to show them love and gratitude not just on the second Sunday of May but throughout the year. Mom’s Day is a call to action—a day to show our mothers that we appreciate every lesson they’ve taught us, every smile they’ve shared with us, and every sacrifice they’ve made for us.

As we celebrate the day, let us also take a moment to give tribute to those who have taken on the role of a mother in any capacity. The aunts, grandmothers, sisters, teachers, and friends who have cared, motivated, and loved us. This is a celebration of the universal spirit of motherhood, a day to recognize every woman who has made a positive impact on our lives.

The Only Mother’s Day Gift I Want

(Girls Trip Movie)

(Girls Trip Movie)

 By Leslie Price

I feel truly conflicted about Mother’s Day. I do enjoy flowers and cards, but attaching the word “mother” or “mom” to something is like tying a bowling ball to it; such is the weight of the baggage and social pressure that comes along for the ride.

When I googled “hate Mother’s Day,” there were plenty of essays covering this feeling. I don’t  hate  it, but I also don’t love it.  Like “ Teacher Appreciation Week ,” Mother’s Day feels like a limp consolation prize.

Maybe this makes me a weirdo, but I disliked being called mom from the start. I don’t mean by my daughter: I mean by the random man who yelled out “mom!” as I passed him on the street with the baby strapped to me soon after her birth. Or the pediatrician who didn’t bother to call me by my name, because mom would suffice.  It felt like they were trying to erase my identity ? Mom, a sentient lump of flesh. Mom, the person who would wear unflattering jeans and dated hairstyles and would fasten the car-seat straps and pack the school lunch and clean up the bedroom and do the laundry and schedule the dentist appointment and on and on.

I discovered the best Mother’s Day gift years ago when a group of friends (mostly moms with one non-mom) started convening once yearly at a predetermined destination for a weekend away from it all. We had all met in New York but had since scattered and it was a nice way to reconnect with old friends and my old identity. And one year, the trip just happened to fall over Mother’s Day weekend.

The most wonderful thing about these trips wasn’t the meals or exploring. It was that liminal time between lunch and dinner when we could just laze about. Sometimes people even napped! This was revelatory. In my day-to-day life there was no room for lazing or napping anymore. Relaxing happened maybe after she went to sleep; but even then, there was work to be done — food prep, tidying, dishes, grocery lists.

After more than a year of feeling  betrayed, abandoned, forgotten about  — what does a gift for mom look like this year? For me ( and maybe, for you ?), it looks just like I always want it to look. I don’t want brunch with a five year old. All I want is ... a break.

This year, there won’t be a Mother’s Day mom-friend trip for a lot of reasons. But I hold on to this idea, and I am ready to cash it in whenever circumstances finally allow.

The Perfect Gift for Moms: Money

perfect gift for mother's day essay

By Reshma Saujani

Ms. Saujani is the founder of the Marshall Plan for Moms campaign and Girls Who Code. She is the author of the forthcoming book “Pay Up: Reimagining Motherhood in America.”

In the 107 years since America celebrated Mother’s Day for the first time, motherhood hasn’t changed much. Moms are celebrated once a year, but on every other day, our labor is taken for granted, undervalued or disregarded. We don’t need more gestures of appreciation; we need a national reckoning about the economic value we create with our bodies and our time, without adequate remuneration or support.

The pandemic has laid bare the reality that motherhood is a job. The truth is, it’s many jobs. Even before Covid-19 shuttered schools and forced 2.3 million women from the work force, women were spending an average of 28 hours a week doing unpaid work — as chefs and private chauffeurs, scraped-knee surgeons and iPad-use mediators.

Plenty of men are certainly putting in that work as well. But women of all ages and races, income brackets and employment statuses are spending over a third more time on unpaid labor than their male counterparts are.

Yet women’s labor isn’t valued. Quite literally, unpaid housework isn’t included in the gross domestic product, despite the fact that, according to the International Monetary Fund, domestic work around the world amounts to anywhere from 10 to 60 percent of G.D.P . (The lack of specificity in this statistic shows how far we have to go in contemplating, let alone quantifying, the economic contributions of motherhood.) And if American women earned minimum wage for their unpaid care-taking and housekeeping work, they would have made $1.5 trillion in 2019 .

Those hours of unpaid work affect women’s ability to do paid work. In April, Oxfam announced that in 2020 alone, women around the world lost $800 billion in income as they lost or left jobs to care for their families.

The numbers are galling, but I hope they can be galvanizing. Because more than just awareness, acknowledgment and appreciation of women’s labor, mothers need material support. There is a growing movement for means-tested federal stipends for moms. Such direct payments would give women the means to afford child care and re-enter the work force.

Money is one way to value unpaid labor, but cash alone doesn’t tackle the insidious notion that motherhood isn’t a real “career” worth compensating. Of course, it is, which is probably why Americans spend about $25 billion each Mother’s Day to thank moms for what they do — but that figure isn’t nearly enough.

More than just a financial bandage, we need vast change on a structural, cultural and personal level.

Eleven senators have introduced a resolution called the Marshall Plan for Moms to advance that kind of change. The plan would deliver affordable child care, robust paid leave and improved access to mental health support to millions of struggling families. President Biden’s recently proposed American Families Plan has the potential to complement and build on the resolution, offering a broader, structural investment in education and child care — as well as tax credits for middle- and low-income families with children.

Should the plans become a reality, the federal government would join a growing number of workplaces in offering much-needed support to mothers and fathers alike.

That’s where the cultural change comes in: While 40 percent of workplaces now offer paternity leave to male employees, 70 percent of fathers who do take parental leave take 10 days or less. Meanwhile, mothers literally pay the price for putting their careers on hold. One study found that, over a 15-year period, women who take even a year off from paid employment earn 39 percent less than women who work without pause.

The blame doesn’t rest solely at the feet of men. Most mothers worry, rightly, that they will face penalties for taking leave, and a majority of Americans still believe that men should be the family breadwinners. That’s why we need workplaces to incentivize — or better yet, expect — men to take that leave when offered, and to welcome women back into the office, without penalty or punishment, when they choose to return.

But equity in the workplace is only possible if there’s equity at home, too. Mothers report that they work longer, harder “second shifts” at home than fathers do. For heterosexual couples, it’s a pretty simple equation — if we want to shift some of the burden off mothers, we need to shift more of it onto fathers.

Millions of women are also raising children without fathers in the picture because they’re single parents, in same-sex unions or co-parenting with a friend or family member. Altering our outdated conceptions of the roles and responsibilities of a family unit will only reaffirm that every type of family is, well, a family.

We don’t have to imagine what our nation would look like were we to adopt this change. Icelandic parents — men and women — receive six months of paid leave at 80 percent of their average income. In Norway, women do only 59 more minutes of unpaid housework a day than men; in the United States, the number is 105 minutes. In Denmark, couples spend less than half of what Americans do on child care. All of these countries report better health outcomes for children and mothers, a smaller gender gap and higher levels of happiness than the United States does.

And that’s the point: Supporting moms better would benefit all Americans — not just mothers, but also fathers and children, employees and employers, communities in every city and county, and especially communities of color.

Mother’s Day is an American tradition. So is the trivialization of motherhood. If we want to celebrate the former, we have to put an end to the latter. Moms deserve more than flowers and saccharine cards. By the time we celebrate next year, I hope we receive an acknowledgment of the fact that motherhood in America is broken — and a plan to fix it.

Perfect Mother's Day Gift

Perfect Mother’s Day Gift: The Ultimate Guide

Shopping for the perfect mother’s day gift: the ultimate guide.

Moms are the best. They always know just what to say when we’re feeling down, and they’re always there for a hug. They work so hard all year round taking care of everyone else, and Mother’s Day is the one day of the year where they get to be spoiled rotten! If you’re stuck on what to buy your mom for Mother’s Day, don’t worry – we’ve got you covered. In this blog post, we’ll give you some tips on how to find the perfect gift for your mom .

A Little History About Mother’s Day

Every year on the second Sunday in May, we celebrate Mother’s Day. It’s a day to show our appreciation for the women who have helped to shape our lives. That means sending a card or flowers or perhaps treating their mothers to a special meal for many people. But what is the history of this holiday?

Mother’s Day was first celebrated in the United States in 1908 when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her mother at St Andrew’s Methodist Church in Grafton, West Virginia. Anna then began a campaign to make Mother’s Day a national holiday. Her efforts were successful, and in 1914 Congress passed a law making it an official holiday.

Since then, Mother’s Day has been celebrated around the world. In some countries, it is a religious holiday, while it is a secular celebration in others. However, the one thing that all Mother’s Days have in common is that they are a day to show our mothers how much we love and appreciate them.

So, now that you know a little bit about the history of Mother’s Day, let’s move on to some gift-giving tips!

How to find the perfect gift for your mom on this special day

For most people, finding the perfect gift for their mom is no easy task. After all, what do you get the woman who has everything? The key is to think about what your mom loves and what would make her happy. If she’s a big fan of books, consider getting her a nice leather-bound edition of her favorite novel. If she enjoys spending time in the kitchen, a new set of cookware would be sure to please. Or, if she’s always on the go, a gift certificate to her favorite spa or infrared sauna would be the perfect way to help her relax and unwind. For those moms in Austin looking to rejuvenate their skin without extensive downtime, Sofwave in Austin treatments at a reputable local spa could be an exceptional gift. It’s a thoughtful way to show you care about her well-being and appearance. Whatever you choose, make sure it comes from the heart and you’re sure to make your mom smile this Mother’s Day.

SPEAKING AS A mom myself, I know that the best gift you can give your mother is you . Whether you plug in your hybrid or hop on a cheap electric bike , you should see her if you can (we get it if you think air travel is scary , though). If you think you'd like to bring her a gift, now is the time to start thinking about it, because Mother's Day is approaching on May 12. Scrambling for ideas? We've got a bunch of gift recommendations below.

Your mom may be the person who loves you the most in the world, but she's probably got a lot of other things going on, like traveling for work, working out, or hanging out with friends. I consulted other WIRED parents for their favorite picks. These are our top gift ideas to help moms work from home, annotate their books, or dip into the world of gaming in their downtime. While you're at it, check out our many other buying guides, like the Best Gift Ideas for New Parents , Best Kid Podcasts , or the Best Kid Tablets .

Updated April 2024: We significantly revamped this guide by deleting old picks and replacing with newer ones, including the Creative Aurvana 2, the Tom Bihn Nomad Tote, and many others.

Special offer for Gear readers: Get a 1-year subscription to WIRED for $5 ($25 off) . This includes unlimited access to WIRED. com and our print magazine (if you'd like). Subscriptions help fund the work we do every day.

A New Pair of Headphones

If you're reading WIRED, you are nerdy. And it is very possible that you, like me, are this way because your nerdy mom watched Star Trek and The X-Files with you as a kid. (Thanks, Mom!) If that's the case, then you are going to thrill and delight her with the first pair of earbuds that have solid-state drivers ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ). They look insanely cool and don't cost $500. They have ground-breaking tech, and she gets to spend all morning listening to you explain it all to her.

Creative's xMems drivers use piezoelectric effect, rather than the dynamic pistons that earbuds normally use (though they do have a pair of dynamic drivers that act as subwoofers, too). That lets them reproduce a much wider range of frequencies much faster, which means more clarity and depth, and shockingly awesome bass. Cowboy Carter will sound so much better. Moms love Beyoncé. (Beyoncé is also a mom! Play “Protector” and see if she doesn't cry!)

A Chocolate Bouquet

Bokksu is a company that focuses solely on bringing Japanese goodies back to hungry people in the United States. The company makes one of our favorite snack boxes , so of course we had to try these adorable chocolate bouquets from Bokksu. Reviewer Nena Farrell notes that they are sweet without being too sweet. The 10-pack comes with three flavors—vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry— each with chocolate flower, a matcha-chocolate leaf, and a cone to hold it all together. It looks a bit like a flower ice cream cone, miniaturized.

If your mom is also weirdly fascinated by the pineberry trend but not too stoked on the idea of biting into an albino fruit, Bokksu also makes a White Strawberry ($32) box with 12 freeze-dried strawberries that have white chocolate infused inside. It’s so good! More fruity sweet than chocolatey sweet, if that’s more her speed.

An Analog Planning System

If your mom is anything like me, her life is delicately arranged between her work and personal Google Calendars that each have several kid calendars, 10 different messaging apps, the Notes app , and her paper planner . (And then, of course, a journal to remind herself that she did get stuff done, even though it feels like she didn't do anything, so why is she exhausted?)

That's why I was immediately drawn to reviewer Scott Gilbertson's Ugmonk Analog Starter Kit ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ). It's a beautifully crafted wooden index card holder, with color-coded, preprinted index cards. Every morning, she can sit serenely at a beautiful, ceremonial object and plot out her day in a meditative, analog fashion. This will help her focus her attention and let her get things done, rather than sitting down at her computer, immediately getting bombarded by hundreds of emails and Slack messages, then shorting out and shopping for black tights for her daughter's Irish dance class for an hour. What was I saying? Oh yes, this is for your mom, not me.

A Changing Robe for Everything

The biggest misconception about changing robes is that you only need them when you're going into, or out of, cold water. A giant, warm, fleecy robe that fits over whatever you're wearing (or not wearing), has a weatherproof exterior, and has deep internal and external zip pockets? And a big hood? Sign me up! In addition to outdoor adventures, I also wear one around the house while I'm working, when walking the dog, and when I'm playing video games on the couch at night.

Dryrobe was founded by British surfer Gideon Bright and offers a variety of robes in a bunch of bright colors and sizes, for both adults and kids. The synthetic lambswool interior feels the heaviest and the most premium of the robes we tested. The only downside of presenting your mom with one of these is that you will then have to buy one for everyone else in your family.

Tom Bihn Nomad Tote bag

The Best Work Bag

We have yet to add this to our guide to the Best Laptop Totes , but I can't wait any longer. I have tried several tote bags to get me away from my trusty backpacks , and this is the first one that I've started to reach for automatically. It's made by Tom Bihn, which sews and designs all its bags in Seattle, so all the components are top of the line—for example, the bomber coil zippers (rather than toothed zippers) don't tear at my knuckles when I rummage through the pockets, and the nylon is bluesign-certified, which guarantees the safe use of textiles at the manufacturer as well as the removal of known hazardous chemicals.

The handles are slim but reinforced, long enough for me to comfortably tuck the bag under my shoulder but not thin enough to cut into my skin. It has a bit of structure so I can organize the interior, and at 17 inches wide it's big enough for a 13-inch laptop, a little carryall pouch for my lip balms and hand sanitizer, a few water bottles, and you know, all the different random mom necessities, like a Kindle and a half-empty bag of tortilla chips. There's also a luggage pass-through so you can put it on top of your carry-on .

Colorful box labeled Super Mario Party that includes 2 controllers for the Nintendo Switch handheld video game system

More Joy-Cons

Every mom I know owns a Nintendo Switch. It's cute, affordable, and the best platform for playing all her cozy games . Now that my kids are older, I have no greater joy in the world than being able to sit down after dinner and play a half-hour of Mario Party or Super Mario Wonder with my kids. If your mom is similar, she probably needs more Joy-Cons because y'all keep breaking hers. I especially like getting sets in different colors. (No one can touch the pastel purple one. That's Mommy's.) For more co-op Switch ideas, check out our guide to the Best Nintendo Switch Games .

Cliffset utensils next to a container with meat rice and vegetables.

A Travel Utensil Set

Probably the most mom-like thing that I do is save all the napkins, tiny packets of soy sauce, and plastic-wrapped utensil packages from every random takeout order and pack them in my lunch or purse when I pack myself a lunch. Two years after reading reviewer Scott Gilbertson's rave on the Cliffset portable dining set , I finally bought myself one. Wow, it is really an upgrade. (Also, I finally ran out of hoarded ones.)

Yes, I could've taken one of the camping sporks out of our kit, but that virtually guarantees that it won't be in the bin the next time we pack our car for a trip. Cliffset's utensils come in a zippered holder so that my fork doesn't come in contact with anything else that might be in my bag. It also includes a cleaning system, which consists of a small spray bottle of cleaning solution; a scraping tool; and a wipe so you can clean right after you eat and pack it away again. It's so efficient and I'm not terrified to open the case and discover that I've left yogurt rotting in there for two weeks. Thank you, Cliffset.

A Tiny Tablet

Your working mom probably already has a desktop and a laptop; what she doesn't have is a delightfully smol iPad Mini ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) to rewatch all of the Lord of the Rings movies while washing dishes or traveling for work. The updated slate packs Apple’s latest processor, a Touch ID button on the edge, a bigger display, and an upgraded camera complete with Center Stage—which helps keep Mom in the frame during FaceTime calls. With support for the second-generation Apple Pencil and Smart Folio case (both sold separately), Mom can replace her notepad, ebook reader, and TV with this petite and portable tablet .

Twelve South HoverBar Duo 2 for iPad

A Floating iPad Stand

OK, now you've gotten her an iPad Mini. But you don't want to add trouble to her life as she figures out where and how to prop it up without craning her neck at weird angles.

Twelve South's newest Duo has both a clamp and a stand. She can clamp the iPad to her nightstand to catch a few episodes of Wallander as she's going to bed. But then she can remove the stand and place that in the kitchen when she's cooking and slot the iPad into whichever holder she wants. Or attach them together! There's even an included hex key to tighten it up if the hinges start feeling loose. For more, check out our Best iPad Accessories guide.

Overhead view of grey rounded square box on top of printed out photos with one camera on both the left and right side

A Good Photo Printer

I love instant cameras and I have bought several for my family to use at different events. But truthfully, it's just easier to take pictures with my phone and print them out later on a smartphone camera printer much more often. I personally own the HP Sprocket ($72) , but Gilbertson recommends the Instax Link Wide in our guide to the Best Instax Cameras . The images on the Link Wide are slightly bigger than the Sprocket. You can also do fun things in the app like add multiple images in a collage, add hearts or glitter, or even add a QR code so that someone with a phone can check out your social media. There are also 1,600 in-app stickers that you can paste on top of your images, which both moms and kids will love.

Arc'teryx Mantis bag

The Best Waist Pack

If your mom is on TikTok, she's probably already heard of the viral Lululemon Everywhere bag , or the Uniqlo mini shoulder bag —comfortable, relatively affordable bags she can sling around her shoulder or cinch around her waist. They're big enough for a wallet, phone, and a couple of lip balms, plus durable enough to take anywhere.

Those bags are fine and all, but after years, I'm still using the Arc'teryx Mantis 2. It's made from 100 percent recycled nylon, with a slim profile I can tuck under my arm, and a padded slot on the back for your cell phone (you can see me wearing it here ). It's big enough to fit my Kindle and even a small water bottle without feeling bulky, and it packs down small enough to fit in a carry-on when I'm traveling. It also comes in a wide variety of fun colorways. For more picks, check out our Best Recycled Bags guide.

Nimble Champ portable charger

An Eco-Friendly Portable Charger

Whenever my mom visits, she immediately rustles through my electronics cabinet to steal cords and power banks she forgot to bring. This is a great passive-aggressive gift if she doesn't already have her own. When he was testing for our Best Portable Chargers guide, WIRED reviewer Scott Gilbertson noted that the more environmentally friendly Nimble charger has enough power to keep a phone topped up a few times.

Thomson Scott Noughty

A Delightful Beverage

There are a lot of reasons why Mom might not be drinking. Maybe she’s a mom-to-be; maybe she’s sober; or maybe she’s an embarrassing lightweight like I am, and doesn’t want a hangover in two hours (brunch cocktails exist to ruin my day). No matter the reason, Thompson & Scott Noughty’s nonalcoholic wines are some of the best to gift her for worry-free bubbles. It’s a dealcoholized wine, meaning it's made from grapes like your usual wines, and then the alcohol is removed after. Noughty’s wines are still fantastic without adding a ton of sugar, which many dealcoholized wines do to replace the alcohol. I fell in love with the sparkling rosé and chardonnay while pregnant, and the rogue is the closest thing you’ll find to “real” nonalcoholic red wine. I’m still always excited to have a bottle even though I’ve long since given birth. — Nena Farrell

Yeti Stackable Mugs

Tiny Stacking Cups

Here at WIRED, we have a certain fondness for tiny cups. Water bottles aside, no one needs to chug 32 ounces of whiskey or hot chocolate. Yeti's tiny stacking mugs come in a minute 4-ounce size, or a 6-ounce size with a handle. It's perfect for sipping a tiny cortado in the morning, rinsing out, and finishing off with a little splash of whiskey at night. They come in a wide array of colors and have a ceramic lining so that the taste of whatever you're drinking isn't affected, and they're dishwasher-safe. And if your mom is also a lightweight who can't finish a 6-ounce pour in one go, the 6-ounce size is also compatible with the small MagSlider lid ($10) .

Bont Glow Wheel

A Little Hobby

Roald Dahl once wrote that every parent has a secret or two that would make their child gasp if they knew it. Unfortunately, my child already knows mine, which is that I love to roller skate after dark. Your mom probably also has a hobby that she doesn't get to indulge nearly often enough, whether that's her unrequited passion for Jean-Luc Picard or puzzling. Get her something small, like these light-up skate wheels, to show her that you've been paying attention.

Laptop with Belkin iPhone Mount connected

Use Your Phone as a Webcam

Are you tired of peering at your mom through a grainy laptop camera? Now macOS Ventura and iOS 16 have a feature called Continuity Camera that lets you use your phone's excellent cameras as a webcam. It supports everything from FaceTime to Zoom, and you can use it pretty easily with this one tiny device that magnetically sticks to the back of the iPhone. When it's time for her to call for your weekly (or daily!) check-in, she can just pop it on the top of her MacBook. It can also be used as a phone grip or a kickstand.

Person holding the Beachwaver B1 curling iron

A Viral Curling Iron

Yes, you can get your mother the limited edition pink Dyson Airwrap ($599) if you have a half-dozen siblings to pool resources. Or you could try the Beachwaver B1 ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ), which went viral last year for how it easily lets your mom create both waves and perfect little ringlets. Reviewer Brenda Stolyar did find that it had a bit of a learning curve. But once she nailed it, all she had to do was clamp her hair, press a button, and then let it go to release a beautiful perfect curl. It eliminated all the guesswork, even if it will mean that your mom has no excuse to stay on TikTok watching tutorials anymore. If your mom has thicker or longer hair, it also comes in a version with a bigger barrel .

Therabody Goggles on blue backdrop

A Soothing Temple Massage

Therabody is best known for its percussive therapy devices , but if Mom doesn't need her quads pounded into submission, you might want to consider a head massage for her ( 9/10, WIRED Recommends ). These goggles combine heat, vibration, and squeezing massage to relieve headaches and eyestrain. Through the Therabody app, mom can pick different timed sessions, whether to turn off heat or vibrations, or pick from one of three separate modes—Focus, Sleep, and SmartRelax—for whether she needs to quickly destress after a meeting or wind down before bed. They also come in their own zippered case, if your mom flies regularly and needs a nap on a red-eye.

Aura Carver digital picture frame

A Digital Photo Frame

Instead of having mom keep all her favorite photos on her phone, gift her an Aura digital photo frame to display them. They're expensive, but they have high-quality screens that look more like authentic frames than computer screens. They’re also easy to set up with a straightforward app. WIRED reviewer Medea Giordano says her favorite model is the 10-inch Carver , which blends in well with her interior decor.

JackRabbit eBike

A Tiny, Convenient Ebike

All around the world, there's one common finding : Women make more transportation journeys per day than men, mostly for care or domestic purposes. If your mom, or a mom that you know, is constantly stacking her trips outside the home—for example, dropping kids off at gymnastics class and using that hour to make a quick run to the grocery store—she will probably appreciate the Jackrabbit Microbike , which saved my bupkis constantly while I was testing it. The battery isn't particularly long-lived, and it's not that comfortable to ride, but it's perfect for throwing in the trunk of your car while running errands. And your mom will be a lot less likely to spill out in the middle of traffic than if you got her a Onewheel .

Po Campo Backpack

The Best Bike Bag

Electric biking is my main form of transportation around my neighborhood, but alas, I am a spouse and a parent and I now have to cart a bunch of stuff around with me everywhere I go. Po Campo is a women-owned company that makes bike bags that are both very functional and fun to look at—a rarity in the bike bag world, which veers towards the Extremely Functional end of the aesthetic spectrum.

The Bedford fits two kid bike helmets and a biggish lock. It has an integrated rain cover (very much appreciated in the Pacific Northwest!), a laptop pocket, and water bottle pockets. The magnetic clips and stretchy hook make it easy to quickly clip it on or get it off my bike rack, and the backpack straps make it easy for me to throw on and walk to the playground or library. I'm testing a version in the reflective Visi-Hemp, but it comes in a few brightly-colored patterns that are even more visible. I also like the head nods I get from other women when they see I have a Po Campo. I'm now considering the grocery pannier ($75) .

Two chatbooks with family photos printed

Monthly Photo Books

Now that we all carry a camera with us everywhere, no one knows what to do with the thousands of photos taking up space in the cloud. Mom can obsessively organize them. Or she can easily put them in a picture book and automatically send 'em to grandparents. Chatbooks is a service that connects to a camera roll, Instagram, or Facebook account. When you get up to 60 pictures, the service will let you know that a book is ready. You can edit your book before it gets printed and sent out. For more photo printing services, we have a guide .

Island and ship themed board game contents scattered on wooden surface Box packaging in the back board with stack of...

A Board Game

Every Christmas, my mother-in-law made the family sit down for a game of Trivial Pursuit. I didn't like this at the time (she did not feel the need to update her game from the 1976 version, which is before I was born) but now I appreciate the tradition. I also like having an activity besides sitting around bickering. Isle of Cats is beautifully designed and ideal for cat lover moms. You have to rescue cats by luring them onto your boat with fish and fitting them on, Tetris-style. Although reviewer Simon Hill notes that the rules are a little complicated at first, it starts to make sense after a few rounds and it's intended for ages 8 and up. For more suggestions, check out Hill's roundup of the Best Family Board Games .

Various desserts and coffee drinks on a restaurant table

Dinner Together

As we said before, you know what your mom really wants? Learning about you, the precious love of her life whom she has watched grow from a kindergartener shouting about how he can't tie his shoes to a fully-grown human who reads novels and has their very own checking account (unthinkable! unbelievable!). She wants to know everything about you (well, not everything), and that means spending some quality time together.

I can't recommend a specific restaurant, but if there's a place near where you or your mom live, where you're comfortable sitting on a patio, eating some pizza or drinking some seltzer, she'd really appreciate it. Or if going out to eat isn't your thing, try exploring a new park or just taking a walk together. Trust me. It's the best.

Sample Essays

To help you in writing a prolific essay, here are some of the sample essays on mothers day.

Mother is one of the most powerful people in the universe as there is no other creature as powerful as her. Mostly our mother manages and keeps controlling every situation. Mothersday is a day celebrated globally to pay tribute to this most powerful person every year. However, only one day is not enough to thank mothers for the unpaid and unrecognized duties that they do every second. Further, no one can ever replace mothers at any cost and to shower tons of love and care for the sacrifices made by mothers, we celebrate every second Sunday of May as Mother’s day. In schools and colleges, management usually conducts an array of competitions for students such as essay writing, speeches, poster making, drawing, and much more. Although we have many relations like husband, wife, friends, relatives, brother, mother, father, and many more but the most beautiful relationship is of a mother with a son or daughter. We must respect our mother and help her in household activities as she is the only one sitting beside us whenever we fall ill. To all of us, our mother is the idol, inspiration, and the only person that deserves respect after god. Further to convey our token of love for all the mothers we celebrate mothers day.

One of the security blankets that saves us from all obstacles, our mothers are the first saviors for all of us. Mothers are the ones that despite regarding their problems first sit next to us with all their ears. To commemorate all the sacrifices made by mothers all across the world, the second Sunday of May is celebrated as Mother’s day per annum. There are no words to express the feelings of love, and devotion for mothers and the work they do for us that remains unexpressed, unrecognized, and unpaid. No matter how old her children are, a mother always wants to see her children. Not only to this day but always it’s our responsibility to make our mothers happy and never make them sad. We must never forget that we are very lucky to have mothers and this big day is to remind us of the duties and responsibilities we have for our mothers.

Every year a big program is usually organized by various organizations on the occasion of mothers day to celebrate this day conjointly with students. Without mothers, we cannot even imagine our lives. Despite having many relations like husband, wife, friends, relatives, brother, mother, father, and many more but the most beautiful relationship is of a mother with a son or daughter. We must respect our mother and help her in household activities as she is the only one sitting beside us whenever we fall ill. To all of us, our mother is the idol, inspiration, and the only person that deserves respect after god for all that she so for her children. Further to convey our token of love for all the mothers we celebrate mothers day and to make this day more special we all must appreciate and acknowledge all the work mothers do for us every second non-stop.

Today, Mother’s Day is widely recognized across the globe as an important occasion for expressing love and affection toward mothers. History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day has been celebrated for centuries, but the modern holiday we know today has its roots in the efforts of Anna Jarvis. Jarvis founded Mother’s Day as a way to honor her own mother, who passed away in 1905. Her initial goal was to create a day for families to come together and celebrate their mothers. In 1908, Jarvis organized the first official Mother’s Day celebration at a Methodist church in West Virginia. The event was so successful that it quickly spread throughout the United States and eventually became an official national holiday in 1914. Over time, Mother’s Day has become more than just a day to honor mothers. It is now also recognized as a day to appreciate all women who have played important roles in our lives – grandmothers, stepmothers, godmothers and even friends who have acted as mother figures. Today, people around the world continue to celebrate Mother’s Day with traditions ranging from breakfast-in-bed and homemade gifts to large family gatherings and community events. Regardless of how you choose to celebrate this special day, take some time to express your love and appreciation for all the amazing women who have shaped your life!

But with so many options out there, it can be difficult to choose the right one. Here are some gift ideas that will make your mom feel special and loved. Firstly, consider giving your mom a personalized gift such as a photo album or customized jewelry. This kind of present shows that you put thought and effort into selecting something just for her. Another idea is to give an experience rather than a physical item. You could book a spa day, take her on a weekend getaway or plan an activity that she has always wanted to do but hasn’t had the chance yet. If you’re looking for more traditional gifts, some classic options include flowers, chocolates or perfume. These are all items that are sure to make any mother smile. Don’t forget about homemade gifts! A handmade card or craft project shows that you took time out of your busy schedule just for her and adds an extra touch of sentimentality. No matter what type of gift you decide on, remember that it’s not about how expensive or extravagant it is – it’s about showing your mom how much she means to you through thoughtful gestures and tokens of appreciation.

Gifts for Mother’s Day

If you want to show your mother how much you appreciate her, then getting a thoughtful and meaningful Mother’s Day gift is a great way to do it. But what should you get for the woman who has done so much for you? Here are some ideas that might help. One classic option is flowers. A bouquet of her favorite blooms can brighten up any room and serve as a reminder of your love every time she looks at them. Another idea is jewelry, which can be personalized with her birthstone or initials for an extra special touch. For the mom who loves staying in and relaxing, consider getting her a cozy robe or slippers. Or perhaps a scented candle or bath bomb set will help create a spa-like atmosphere right at home. If your mom enjoys cooking, there are plenty of kitchen gadgets and cookbooks out there that would make great gifts. And for the tech-savvy moms, smartwatches or wireless earbuds could be just what they need to stay connected on-the-go. Whatever gift you choose, remember that it’s not about how expensive it is but rather the thought behind it that counts most. Showing appreciation and gratitude goes beyond material possessions – spending quality time together can also mean just as much (if not more) than any present ever could!

Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show your mom how much you appreciate her by cooking a delicious meal. Whether it’s breakfast in bed or a fancy dinner, there are plenty of recipes to choose from that will make her day special. For breakfast, try making homemade pancakes with fresh berries and whipped cream on top. Or whip up some scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and chives for an elegant touch. If you’re planning a brunch gathering, consider making quiche Lorraine or French toast casserole. These dishes can be prepared ahead of time and easily reheated when guests arrive. For a light lunch option, try making a salad with mixed greens, grilled chicken, strawberries, and balsamic dressing. Or make some mini sandwiches with cucumber and cream cheese for an afternoon tea party vibe. When it comes to dinner options, roasted chicken or beef tenderloin are always crowd-pleasers. Serve them alongside mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables for a classic comfort food dish. No matter what you decide to cook for Mother’s Day, remember that the most important part is spending quality time together as a family.

Get pampered with facials, massages, and other luxurious treatments. Or if your mom loves to cook, take a cooking class together and learn some new recipes. If art is more her thing, consider visiting an art museum or taking an art class together. You could even create your own masterpiece at home by painting or doing some DIY crafts. No matter what activity you choose to do on Mother’s Day, make sure it’s something that both you and your mom will enjoy so you can create memories that will last a lifetime.

About Essay ON Mothers Day

Mother’s day first originated in USA, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother in a church in Virginia. Her mother was an activist who cared for wounded soldiers. She also started health clubs to address public health issues.

To honor her mother and all the mothers in the world, who do more than anyone in this world, Mother’s day was started.

However, later Anna Jarvis, claimed that her opinion was misinterpreted and the occasion was commercialised more than the sentiments associated with it.

This day is celebrated in different countries on different days. Each and every mother is special and honourable. Mother does lot of sacrifices to bring up her child and make him a better person.

A mother works without any complaint and irritation, and efforts are never recognized. She plays very important role in the overall development of a person. She is our first teacher who, tell us what is good and bad.

It complements similar celebrations for other family members such as Father’s Day, Grandparent’s Day, Sister’s Day, Brother’s Day, etc. In the US, the celebration began at the behest of Anna Jarvis in the early 20th Century. However, in other cultures such as Greek, Roman, etc, Mother’s Day was a day of celebration and significance that has existed for thousands of years. Usually, In India, Mother’s Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, each year but in other countries the dates vary.

How do we celebrate Mother’s Day?

People on this day celebrate the mothers and the indomitable spirit of Motherhood. People show their gratitude through gifts and deeds to pamper their mother and show them, how thankful they are to have a mother. Conclusion On Mothers Day essay

A mothers contribution cannot be returned back in one day. She is the one who thinks about us and does everything for us lifelong. Her sacrifices cannot be counted, what ever she does, she gives her full efforts and never expects anything in return.

It is our duty to make her feel proud and take care of her, although she never wants to burden us with anything but we must take the responsibility and do everything possible that makes her happy.

A mother is like a light who burns herself to show us the light.

A person might be having many friends or many people in their life, but mother is the only person who cares and thinks about you always without any selfish needs. A mother never differentiates between her kids. For her all her kids are equal and she loves them all equally and unconditionally and wants best for all of them.

Essay on Mother’s Day

A mother is the first teacher and the first friend of her children. She carries her child in her womb for nine months and nurtures her little one with all her heart and soul. She can decipher every gesture of her children since the time they are born. She loves her children unconditionally and guides them on the right path in life. She takes care of her children and ensures their safety in every way. We celebrate Mother's Day to thank our mothers, expressing our love and gratitude for them.

Origin of Mother’s Day

The celebration of Mother's Day first started in the country of Greece, and now it is celebrated in every part of the world. Every mother is devoted to her child throughout her life. Measuring the depth of a mother's sacrifice is not possible for anyone nor can we repay the priceless favors and love of our mothers. It is our duty to take care of our mothers and to respect and love them. Mother's day is celebrated to make our mothers feel special and shower all our love on her. Though it is celebrated on the second Sunday of May, every year, yet, we should celebrate every day as Mother's Day to make our mothers feel special.

Methods of Celebration

Every child wants to celebrate Mother’s Day in a special way. Some bring gifts for their mothers, some cook for them, some cut cakes. Some people celebrate it at home, some go out and celebrate it. Of all the expensive things, handmade gifts always hold a special place in the hearts of our mothers. Some people take their mothers for a day-out and spend quality time with their mothers.

Mother is the first person that a child seeks for on returning home. She takes care of her children from their birth until her last breath. We cannot even count their innumerable contributions to our lives or all that they do from morning to night. Mothers continue to perform all their duties and responsibilities, throughout the day, even if they are tired. They never expect anything in return for all the love they shower upon us and the way they pamper us. However, we can say a big thank you to our mothers for all that she does for us.

We should obey our mothers and treat them with respect. It is a mother who shapes the character and personality of her children. All mothers play an important role in the growth and development of their children. She takes care of everything that her child needs. A mother is the first teacher of her children. She loves her children dearly, and in every difficulty, she stands by her children and guides them through thick and thin. It is a mother who stops her children from wrongdoing and dissuades them when they tend to go on the wrong path. She scolds them and guides them onto the right path, that’s why a mother is referred to as the first teacher of any child.

For a mother, her whole world is around her children. It is our duty to take care of our mothers, to never let them be unhappy, to never disrespect them, and no matter what to not leave them when they are hard on us. A mother always motivates her children, encourages them to move ahead and work harder in life. A mother's happiness always depends on her children, if her child is unhappy she can never be happy.

No matter how old a child is, when he comes home, he wants to see his mother first. When a child is in trouble, he runs to his mother for help. She forgets her desires while fulfilling the wishes of others. She feeds her children by preparing their favorite dishes, she narrates new stories to her children. She also helps in preparing her children's school projects, she also helps them with their studies. Mothers teach their children good manners, equity, morality, and humanity. In fact, for every child, his mother is the most precious gift of his life.

Celebration in School

Mother's day is celebrated with great pomp in many schools. Mothers are invited to their children’s schools on this day. On this day children adopt different methods to make their mother feel special, some children prepare essays for their mother, write a speech for them so that they can tell them how special their mothers are to them. Some children prepare cards for their mothers, some sing songs, while some get their mothers her favorite things. On this day, many games are played in schools in which mothers participate with their children.

Mother’s Day Celebrations in Different Countries

Mothers are respected in every culture of the world. They are considered the ultimate symbol of sacrifice. They are known for their love and affection throughout the world. Every country celebrates Mother's day in a different way.

Australia has a long history of celebrating Mother’s Day filled with different customs. Mothers are given flowers and a visit to the church is customary. The mothers that lost their children during the war were honored by other members of the society.

Celebrating Mother’s Day was not a part of the tradition of Bangladesh. It was introduced to the people due to the increasing influence of western customs. It is still not celebrated in many parts, however, people from urban areas usually celebrate it with a cake or some gifts.

In Brazil, Mother’s Day was initially promoted by the Catholic Church. However today it is celebrated with families by exchanging gifts like a western holiday. It has not been declared as an official holiday.

Mother’s Day has not been declared a holiday by the government of Canada. It is a private function held with families. Mothers and grandmothers receive gifts from their families.

Initially, it was seen as a US holiday. However, the government permitted its citizens to celebrate Mother’s Day. It is justified on the grounds that the holiday falls in line with the ethics and traditions of the Chinese people.

Therefore, Mother’s Day is celebrated in China to show respect and honor to the mothers. People usually buy flowers for their mothers. Lilies and carnations are the most popular choice here.

Celebrating Mother’s Day became a common practice in Egypt and Arabic countries only in the latter half of the last century. It is done by playing songs and showing respect and gratitude to mothers .

The idea of celebrating Mother’s Day became popular in France during World War I due to US soldiers posted there. The government of France started awarding mothers with large families. However, today it has become a commercial holiday and is celebrated by giving gifts and cards.

In Germany, the celebration of Mother’s Day began to promote the idea of motherhood. Initially, the holiday was not about recognizing the individuality of the mother. Rather it was an attempt of the nation to increase its population. It was declared as an official holiday and awards were given to mothers that had a large number of children.

Initially, Mother’s Day was not celebrated in Mexico as it was seen as a capitalist holiday of the US. However, in modern times, it is celebrated with great enthusiasm to honor mothers. The day usually begins with a special song for the mother and the rest of the day families spend time with their loved ones.

In Nepal, Mother’s Day is celebrated either with the entire family or by performing a pilgrimage. The whole purpose of the day is to recognize the sacrifices and hard work of mothers and to honor them with gifts and love.

The pilgrimage is performed by visiting a pond that is considered holy. It is done with the purpose of bringing peace to the soul of the mother. It is celebrated according to the position of the moon in the atmosphere.

Russia commemorates the selfless and heroic qualities of women. It is common to celebrate women’s day and Mother’s Day together in Russia. 8th March marks the contribution of women and is declared as a holiday by the government.

In Spain, Mother’s Day is celebrated not only by the children but by the entire family. Gifts are given to mothers by every member of the family. Children usually prepare the presents themselves or with the help of their class teachers.

In Spain, the month of May is attributed to Mother Mary. Mother’s Day is therefore celebrated on the first Sunday of May.

In the United States of America, mothers are honored with flowers. It has become a tradition to celebrate Mother’s Day by buying coloured carnations, cards, etc. People who have lost their mothers usually buy white carnations. It is also popular to visit a church on Mother’s Day.

The bond of a mother and her child is so special that it is cherished forever, by children and their mothers. One day is not enough to celebrate motherhood and we should make every day as special as Mother’s Day to shower our love upon our mothers. We should acknowledge all the little things that our mothers do for us every day. No other gift can be more special to a mother than her children’s love and respect. So let us pledge to make every day special for our mothers and fill her days with warmth and joy.

Someone said: “Motherhood is the most merciful love”. Someone said: “Motherhood is the most tolerant of love”. There is nothing stronger and purer than maternal love. It is a unique bond between the child and his mother, and the first real love a child experiences the moment he is born. My life has taught me that maternal love is equally self-giving, generous, unmercenary, and irreplaceable. It is unique. It is unstoppable and never-ending. It is the greatest miracle a child witnesses and experiences from the very first until the very last day of his life. The selfless and unrequited character of maternal love turns our mothers into the carriers of unique life philosophy and vision, which we accept, comprehend, and later transfer to our own children.

It was a routine summer day in 2000. I woke up early, opened the window, and spread my arms to welcome the new day. I felt greedy to grasp and feel the sense of fresh and chilly air on my skin and in my lungs. For a moment, I thought the air could touch my soul. Suddenly, I realized the significance of the day. It was no longer routine, but filled with unbelievable expectations – that was the day when my mother had been born. It was my mother’s birthday – the day that was equally significant for me and the most special person in my life. I was standing in front of the window, trying to imagine my mother’s face and her mood on that special day. However, I could not wait any longer and had to act quickly, to be able to prepare my surprise before she could see me.

I gathered all pocket money I had, to buy a perfect gift for my mother. I must say that I had been extremely thorough in my pocket expenses, trying to save as much as I could to surprise my mom on that special day. I left the house, thinking about my mother and my love to her. I walked down the road, thinking of how my mother would react when she saw my present. I knew she would be surprised. I felt she would be delighted. I was confident she would smile and whisper “thank you, darling”. I expected that my present would make her feel special and loved. I walked down the road, thinking of how good or hurtful I had been toward my mother over the last year. No, our relations had never been perfect. We could argue and even quarrel, but those rare instances never spoiled the unique bond we longed to preserve and expand. It was a unique sense of belonging which we experienced every single second of our lives. Birthday was a perfect occasion to prove my commitment to my mother. It was a perfect way to make my mother feel valued and recognized. That was the day when I could finally reveal my gratitude for everything my mother had done for me.

With so much on my mind, I did not notice how I approached a small mall. To a large extent, it was a subconscious move I could not control. I went in without thinking of the amount of money I held in my pocket. I was wandering across the lines of products and wonderfully beautiful things, until I realized that the money I had could not suffice to bring my mother a decent gift. With the sense of sorrow, regret, and disappointment I had to leave. I was standing in the middle of the parking lot, thinking of what I would have to do. I got extremely reasonable and thorough. I knew my finances were scarce, but I could not let my mother go without a present. I decided to visit several different malls, and that was, probably, the best decision I could take at the moment. I decided not to give up. I would be persistent and reasonable in my search for the best birthday present. However, the next series of visits to smaller and larger malls went without any result. I was growing nervous. I was losing time but did not find anything even close to what would suit my mother and the remarkable birthday occasion. Suddenly, I saw a small roadside shop and reluctantly walked inside.

The first thought that happened to me when I entered the store was “What am I doing here?” I was surrounded by a variety of smaller and bigger items, the ones which people traditionally buy on their way to other places. The name “roadside store” told everything for itself, and I doubted I would find anything nice there. The cashier man might have noticed my hesitation, because I heard the traditional, even impersonal may-I-help-you question. The question expressed more duty than genuine willingness to help and sounded extremely automatic. I answered, “I am looking for a birthday gift for my mother, but I feel ashamed to say that I do not have enough money in my pocket”. Suddenly, the cashier’s face grew serious, and he uttered: “The best gift you can give your mother is love!” I left the roadside store, thinking what the cashier man meant when he talked about love and what I could do to express my love and gratitude to my mother. Money no longer mattered. I felt that there was something else, more valuable than money. So, I was developing a new strategy of birthday celebration for my mom.

I decided that to cook a meal for my mother would be an excellent way to celebrate her birthday. I went into the kitchen, filled with excitement and anticipation. Everything in the kitchen was familiar to me, but suddenly I realized how I missed cooking for my parents. The years at school burdened me with all sorts of responsibilities, leaving no time for real family pastime. I felt an urgent sense of guilt and something I had been missing for ages. Suddenly, I heard my mother coming out her room. The steps approaching, I had to take fast decision. Longevity noodles were everything I could think of at that time.

I was rushing around the kitchen. Everything turned into a mess. I had to do everything quickly, not to spoil the birthday picture. I heard my mother coming from the outside and rushed to meet her. Upon eeeing me in the kitchen, my mother smiled secretly and genuinely. She saw the noodles… Her look was strange, anticipating, surprised, and – oh my goodness! – grateful! She was grateful, and I felt so much appreciated for everything I had done to make my mother’s birthday special! My mother smiled while I was singing a birthday song and in a second, her black hair seemed to go white. With a tint of bitterness in my voice, I asked: “Anything wrong?” My mother raised her eyes, – they were filled with tears: “This is the best birthday I ever had in my life”…

I am standing in front of my window… Ten years have passed since the moment I heard those words. I can see my mother, sitting in front of me with a plate of longevity noodles and smiling. I can see myself running from store to store, searching for something I did not know I was holding in my hands; and in my heart. I look into the sky. Clouds are passing me by, and no one can imagine how much my mother’s birthday has changed my life. Even millions are not enough to get someone to love you for who you are. Even billions cannot secure you from tragic mistakes and failures. Material things are a double-edged sword – they can be equally valuable and killing. They can be useful and cold. They can be surprising and unimportant. The value of life is in being able to show love and affection every day. The value of life is in trying to remind someone of how loved and cherished they are. To love someone is a daily work. It is like sports – once you stop, you lose your skills and grow weaker. There is nothing better than to know somebody loves you, unconditionally and passionately. There is nothing better than to act as if you always miss an opportunity to show your love to others. “I will never forget that day,” – I keep saying to myself. I grab my suitcase and leave the house. Fresh air and street noise beat my face. I stop and look back into the window, to see my reflection… I pick up the phone and call my mother… and in a moment, I am on my way to the next point of no-return which, no matter the distance, cannot reduce the feelings of closeness and connectedness that follow me everywhere… thank you…

The perfect gift ideas for Mother’s Day

By daily sabah.

Sunday marks the 107th Mother’s Day commemoration since the celebration’s first official inception over a century ago. (Shutterstock Photo)

Across the globe, people are getting ready to celebrate Mother’s Day this Sunday, once again under the shadow of the COVID-19 pandemic. This year will mark a unique iteration of the commemoration since it was first officially held over 100 years ago .

As we approach Sunday, televisions are awash with ads emphasizing the sacrifices mothers make for their children, as is custom on the occasion, and millions are trying to come up with the best gifts to make their mothers happy.

However, it's not easy choosing the perfect gift on such a special occasion and sometimes it can be a struggle to find something before running out of ideas and time.

If you still haven't been able to decide on your gift, here are some ideas that could help you choose.

A thank you

Mothers work tirelessly for years for their children, making tremendous sacrifices and loving their kids unconditionally, without ever expecting anything in return. Sometimes, the simplest form of gratitude and showing your love for your mother can go a long way to making her happy. So, it may not possess grandeur, but a simple “thank you” can mean a lot. Of course, a “thank you” is not enough for years of loving motherhood, so be sure to pack some gifts as well, but it is the perfect start.

The classic: sweets and flowers

As much as a bouquet of flowers and sweets may sound a bit boring to you, there is always a way to make it special. You could order a specially designed cake in an interesting shape or color. You could even have the cake shaped like the first letter of your mother’s name, or shaped into a heart with two mini-figures of you and her on top. Add a sweet note and your perfect gift is ready.

Another sweet idea could be a themed cupcakes box. You could use her favorite movie, brand, animation character, animal or even her profession as a theme and create a cute box of cupcakes that will definitely make her smile.

Techie goodies

Yes, the older generation may not be very good friends with technology, but it doesn’t mean some techie goodies wouldn't make a nice gift. Bluetooth earphones, a smartwatch or a robot vacuum could be something to add to your list.

There are few women on this planet who wouldn't be happy to receive something shiny or sparkly as a gift. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, you still have until Sunday to choose something to suit your mother’s taste.

Makeup or skincare

A nice set of makeup or skincare from your mother’s favorite brand could be another good idea for a gift on this day. If just a bunch of bottles doesn't sound special enough for you, you could place it all in a nice box and decorate it with flowers and some sweets.

Spa gift certificate

It is always nice to have some “me time.” A gift card for a nice spa or beauty center would definitely be a thoughtful and useful gift for your mother if these establishments have reopened in your area.

Well, it may not be as popular as it once was, but reading a book is still one of the best ways to pass time peacefully at home, especially in an ever more digital and busy world. Buying your mother a book that you know would make her day can turn the occasion into an even more meaningful and sentimental one. For example, imagine how special it would be to get her a book that she has been wanting to get her hands on for a long time but couldn't find, or maybe one that she read many years ago, still loves and has been meaning read again.

The entire world has been trapped at home for over a year now, and spending time in the house has become more and more of a chore as people exhaust every traditional method of entertaining themselves. So, finding something that could help your mother find more enjoyment in her days in quarantine could be an invaluable gift, especially if she is not a working mom.

Jigsaw puzzles are a classic in this regard as they are one of the most effective ways to fend off boredom. They can also be made into lovely framed pictures once finished to decorate her home for years to come and remind her of you. Similarly, though not a hobby, you could get a picture of you and your mother framed (does anyone remember printed photographs?), or maybe one of many loved ones together.

The most important thing on this occasion and the most necessary, particularly during these unusual times, is to make your mother feel loved. As is the case with a simple “thank you,” showing pure love toward your mother is an essential gift. This gift is an immensely personal one, so general suggestions might be ineffective, but even something as basic as making a video message of all the family members and loved ones expressing their feelings and gratitude for your mother in a simple, pure love package, is a great gift.

For those of us lucky enough to have wonderful grandmothers in our lives, the reality is that they've probably given us far more gifts than we've given them. Grandmothers are often emotional constants, offering us love, warmth, and care all the way from our infancies through our adulthoods. And while it can be easy to take our grandmas for granted, Mother's Day is one opportunity to change that.
