1. Explosions on other planets are not heard on earth. Why?

Ans: Explosions on other planets are not heard on earth because there is no material medium between the earth and the planets over a long distance, and without a material medium for propagation, sound waves cannot travel.

2. Why longitudinal waves are called pressure waves?

Ans: Longitudinal waves are called pressure waves because the propagation of longitudinal waves through a medium consists of the variations in the volume and the pressure of the air, these variations in volume and air pressure result in the formation of compressions and rarefactions.

3. Why do tuning forks have two prongs?

Ans: The tuning fork has two prongs because the two prongs of a tuning fork produce resonant vibrations that help to keep the vibrations going for longer.

4. Velocity of sound increases on a cloudy day. Why?

Ans: Velocity of sound increases on a cloudy day, because the air is wet on a cloudy day, it contains a lot of moisture, the density of air is lower, and because velocity is inversely proportional to density, velocity increases.

5. Sound of maximum intensity is heard successively at an interval of 0.2 second on sounding two tuning fork to gather. What is the difference of frequencies of two tuning forks?

Ans: The beat period is 0.2 second so that the beat frequency is ${\text{fb}} = \dfrac{1}{{0.2}} = 5\;{\text{Hz}}$ Therefore, the difference of frequencies of the two tuning forks is $5{\text{HZ}}$ .

6. If two sound waves have a phase difference of ${60^0}$, then find out the path difference between the two waves?

Ans, Phase difference, $\phi  = {{60}^{0}} = \dfrac{\pi }{3}{\text{rad}}$

Now, in general for any phase difference, $(\Phi )$ , the path difference (x) :-

$\phi  = \dfrac{{2\pi }}{\pi }x$

Given $\phi  = \dfrac{\pi }{3},x = ?$

$\dfrac{\pi }{3} = \dfrac{{2\pi }}{\pi } \times x$

$x = \dfrac{\pi }{3} + \dfrac{{2\pi }}{\pi }$

$x = \dfrac{\pi }{3} \times \dfrac{\pi }{{2\pi }}$

$x = \dfrac{{\pi m}}{6}$

7. If the displacement of two waves at a point is given by: -

${{\text{Y}}_1} = asin{\text{wt}}$

${{\text{Y}}_2} = {\text{an}}\sin \left( {wt + \dfrac{\pi }{2}} \right)$

Calculate the resultant amplitude?

Ans: Given data :

If ${{\text{a}}_1} = $ amplitude of first wave

${a_2} = $ amplitude of second wave

${a_r} = $ resultant amplitude

$\phi  = $ phase difference between 2 waves

${{\mathbf{a}}_t} = \sqrt {{a_1}^2 + {a_1}^2 + 2{a_1}{a_2}\cos \phi } $

In our case,

${{\text{a}}_1} = a;{{\text{a}}_2} = a;\phi  = \dfrac{\pi }{2}50$

${{\text{a}}_t} = \sqrt {{a^2} + {a^2} + 2a \times a\operatorname{Cos} \left( {\dfrac{\pi }{2}} \right)} $

$ = \sqrt {2{a^2}} \quad \left( {\because \operatorname{Cos} \left( {\dfrac{\pi }{2}} \right) = 0} \right)$

${a_t} = \sqrt {2a} $

8.A hospital uses an ultrasonic scanner to locate tumors in a tissue. What is the wavelength of sound in the tissue in which the speed of sound is $1.7\;{\text{km}}_5^{ - 1}$ ? The operating frequency of the scanner is $4.2{\text{MHz}}$.

Speed of sound in the tissue, $v = 1.7\;{\text{km}}/{\text{s}} = 1.7 \times {10^3}\;{\text{m}}/{\text{s}}$

Operating frequency of the scanner, ${\text{v}} = 4.2{\text{MHz}} = 4.2 \times {10^5}\;{\text{Hz}}$

The wavelength of sound in the tissue is given as:

$\lambda  = \dfrac{v}{V}$

$ = \dfrac{{1.7 \times {{10}^2}}}{{4.2 \times {{10}^8}}} = 4.1 \times {10^{ - 4}}\;{\text{m}}$

9. Given below are some functions of $x$ and $t$ to represent the displacement (transverse or longitudinal) of an elastic wave. State which of these represent (i) a traveling wave, (ii) a stationary wave or (iii) none at all:

(a) $y = 2\cos (3x)\sin (10t)$

(b) $y = 2\sqrt {x - 13} $

(c) $y = 3\sin (5x - 0.5n) + 4\cos (5x - 0.5t)$

(d) $y = \cos x\sin t + \cos 2x\sin 2t$

Ans: (a) It is a stationary wave because the harmonic terms are present individually in the equation, the preceding equation indicates a stationary wave $kx$ and $\omega t$ appear separately in the equation.

(b) There is no harmonic term in the provided equation. As a result, it doesn't represent either a moving or stationary wave. 

(c) The harmonic terms in the preceding equation describe a moving wave and are in the combination of $kx$ and $\omega t$ are in the combination of $kx - \omega t$ .

(d) The given equation represents a stationary wave because the harmonic terms $kx$ and $\omega t$ appear separately in the equation. This equation actually represents the superposition of two stationary waves.

10. A narrow sound pulse (for example, a short pap by a whistle) is sent across a medium. (a) Does the pulse have a definite (i) frequency, (ii) wavelength, (iii) speed of propagation? (b) if the pulse rate is 1 after every $20\;{\text{s}}$, (that is the whistle is blown for a split of second after every $20\;{\text{s}}$ ), is the frequency of the note produced by the whistle equal to $\dfrac{1}{{20}}$ or $0.05{\text{Hx}}$ ?

Ans: (a) No, the pulse doesn’t have a definite . 

(ii) No, It doesn’t have frequency.

(iii) Yes, It have a wavelength.

(b) No, the frequency of the note produced by the whistle is not equal .

Explanation:

(a) There is no defined wavelength or frequency for the narrow sound pulse. However, the sound pulse's speed remains constant, i.e., it is equal to the speed of sound in that medium. 

(b) The short pip produced after every 20 s does not mean that the frequency of the whistle is $\dfrac{1}{{20}}$ or $0.05{\text{H}}$ . It means that $0.06{\text{H}}$ s is the frequency of the repetition of the pip of the whistle.

2 Marks Questions

1. A pipe $20\;{\text{cm}}$ long is closed at one end. Which harmonic mode of the pipe is resonantly excited by a $430\;{\text{Hz}}$ source? will this source be in resonance with the pipe if both the ends are open?

 Length of pipe $ = {\text{L}} = 20\;{\text{cm}} = 0.2\;{\text{m}}$

Frequency of ${{\text{n}}^{{\text{th }}}}$ node $ = {v_{\text{n}}} = 430\;{\text{Hz}}$

Velocity of sound $ = {\text{v}} = 340\;{\text{m}}\mid {\text{s}}$

Now, ${v_n}$ of closed pipe is :-

${v_n} = \dfrac{{(2n - 1)v}}{{4L}}$

$430 = \dfrac{{(2n - 1) \times 340}}{{4 \times 0.2}}$

$2n - 1 = \dfrac{{430 \times 4 \times 0.2}}{{340}}$

$2n - 1 = 1.02$

$2n = 1.02 + 1$

$2n = 2.02$

Hence, it will be the first normal mode of vibration, ln a pipe, open at both ends We have ,

${v_n} = \dfrac{{H \times {\text{V}}}}{{2L}} = \dfrac{{{\text{A}} \times 340}}{{2 \times 0.2}} = 430\quad {\text{So}},430 = \dfrac{{{\text{A}} \times 340}}{{2 \times 0.2}}$

$n = \dfrac{{430 \times 2 \times 0.2}}{{340}}$

As ${\text{n}}$ has to be an integer, open organ pipe cannot be in resonance with the source.

2. Can beats be produced in two light sources of nearly equal frequencies?

Ans: No, because light emission is a random and fast occurrence, and we obtain uniform intensity instead of beats.

3 . A person deep inside water cannot hear sound waves produces in air. Why?

Ans: Person deep inside water cannot hear sound produces in air because the speed of sound in water is roughly four times that of sound in air, refractive index is four times that of sound in air.

index \[u = \dfrac{{{\text{ Sin }}i}}{{\sin r}} = \dfrac{{Va}}{{Vw}} = \dfrac{1}{4} = 0.25\]

For, refraction ${r_{\max }} = {90^0}$ , ${i_{\max }} = {90^0}$ , ${i_{\max }} = {14^0}$ . 

Since ${i_{\max }} \ne {r_{\max }}$

Thus, Sounds are only reflected in the air, and people deep in the water are unable to hear them.

4. If the splash is heard 4.23 seconds after a stone is dropped into a well. 78.4 meters deep, find the velocity of sound in air?

Ans: Given data,

depth of $well = s = 78.4m$

Total time after which splash is heard $ = 4.23\;{\text{s}}$

Assume that,

If ${t_1}$ = time taken by stare to hit the water surface is the well

${t_2}$ = time taken be splash of sound to reach the top of well.

then ${t_1} + {t_2} = 4.23{\text{sec}}$ .

Now, for downward journey of stone;

$u = 0,a = 9.8m\mid {s^2},s = 78.4m$

${\text{t}} = {\text{t}}1 = 2$

$As,s = ut + \dfrac{1}{2}a{t^2}$

$\therefore 78.4 = 0 + \dfrac{1}{2} \times 9.8 \times t_1^2$

$78.4 = 4.9t_1^2$

$t_1^2 = \dfrac{{78.4}}{{4.9}}$

$t_1^2 = 16$

${t_1} = \sqrt {16}  = 4{\text{sec}}$

Now, $t1 + t2 = 4.23$

$4 + {t_2} = 4.23$

${t_2} = 4.23 - 4.00$

${t_2} = 0.23\;{\text{s}}$

If ${\text{V}} = $ velocity of sound in ${\text{air}}$ .

${\text{v}} = \dfrac{{{\text{ dis }}\tan ce(t)}}{{\operatorname{tim} (t)}} = \dfrac{{78.4}}{{0.23}} = 340.87\;{\text{m}}\mid {\text{s}}$

5. How roar of a lion can be differentiated from bucking of a mosquito?

Ans: The roaring of a lion produces a low-pitched, high-intensity sound, but the buzzing of mosquitoes produces a high-pitched, low-intensity sound, and therefore the two noises may be distinguished.

6. The length of a sonometer wire between two fixed ends is $110\;{\text{cm}}$. Where the two bridges should be placed so as to divide the wire into three segments whose fundamental frequencies are in the ratio of 1: 2: 3?

Ans: Assume that,

9.  Why are all stringed instruments provided with hollow boxes?

Ans: The sound box is a hollow box that comes with stringed instruments. Forced vibrations are produced in the sound box when the strings are set into vibration. Ans: We all know that in order for an echo to be heard, the obstruction must be hard and vast in size. In addition, the obstruction must be at least a distance from the source. The parameters for the generation of Echo are not met since the length of the room is usually less than. As a result, there is no echo in the room.

14. Why do the stages of large auditoriums give curved backs?

Ans: The backs of big auditorium stages are curved because a speaker's voice is rendered parallel following reflection from a concave or parabolic seer face when he stands at or near the focal of a curved surface. As a result, the voice can be heard from afar.

15. Show that Doppler effect in sound is asymmetric?

Ans: It is seen that apparent frequency of sound when source is approaching the stationary listener (with velocity ${{\text{v}}^1}$ ) is not the same as the apparent frequency of sound when the listener is approaching the stationary source with a velocity ${{\text{v}}^1}$ . This shows that Doppler Effect in sound is asymmetric.

Ans: When a sting under tension is placed into vibration, transverse harmonic waves propagate along its length, and reflected waves exist when the length of the sting is fixed. In sting, the incident and reflected waves will superimpose on one other, resulting in transverse stationary waves.

 Let a harmonic wave be set up in a sting of length $ = \lambda $ which is fixed at 2 ends: $ \to {\text{x}} = 0$ and $x = L$

Let the incident wave travels from left to right direction, the wave equation is:

(b) Bats produce ultrasonic sound waves at a very high frequency. Obstacles re-direct these waves back toward them. With the help of its cerebral sensors, a bat receives a reflected wave (frequency) and calculates the distance, direction, nature, and size of an obstacle.

The given transverse harmonic wave is

Case Study 1: Satellites in a circular orbit around the earth in the equatorial plane with T = 24 hours are called Geostationary Satellites. Clearly, since the earth rotates within the same period, the satellite would appear fixed from any point on Earth. It takes very powerful rockets to throw up a satellite to such large heights above the earth but this has been done in view of the several benefits of much practical application. The weight of an object is the force with which the earth attracts it. We are conscious of our own weight when we stand on a surface since the surface exerts a force opposite to our weight to keep us at rest. The same principle holds good when we measure the weight of an object by a Spring balance hung from a fixed point e.g. the ceiling. The object would fall down unless it is subject to a force opposite to gravity. This is exactly what the spring exerts on the object. This is because the spring is pulled down a little by the gravitational pull of the object and in turn, the spring exerts a force on the object vertically upwards. Now, imagine that the top end of the balance is no longer held fixed to the top ceiling of the room. Both ends of the spring as well as the object move with identical acceleration g. The spring is not stretched and does not exert any upward force on the object which is moving down with acceleration g due to gravity. The reading recorded in the spring balance is zero since the spring is not stretched at all. If the object were a human being, he or she will not feel his weight since there is no upward force on him. Thus, when an object is in free fall, it is weightless and this phenomenon is usually called the phenomenon of weightlessness. In a satellite around the earth, every part and parcel of the satellite has acceleration towards the center of the earth which is exactly the value of the earth’s acceleration due to gravity at that position. Thus in the satellite, everything inside it is in a state of free fall. This is just as if we were falling towards the earth from a height. Thus, in a manned satellite, people inside experience no gravity. Gravity for us defines the vertical direction and thus for them there are no horizontal or vertical directions, all directions are the same.

Heat is a form of energy which produces the sensation of warmth. It is total thermal energy of the body which is sum of kinetic energies of all the individual molecules of the body. It is transferred from one body to the other on account of temperature difference between two bodies. Joule found that when' mechanical work (W) is converted into heat (Q), then the ratio of Wand Q is always constant, represented by J i.e., Joule's mechanical equivalent of heat. \(J=\frac{W}{Q} \text { or } W=J Q\)   A measure of temperature is obtained using a thermometer that use Physical Properties which change uniformly with temperature, for example, in common liquid in glass thermometers, mercury, alcohol etc are used whose volume varies linearly with temperature over a wide range. (i) Define temperature and its significance. (ii) Define One calorie. (iii) How does a thermometer work? (iv) Name the two convenient fixed reference point for measuring temperature. (v) How celsius temperature and Fahrenheit scale are related to each other? (vi) What is absolute zero temperature? (vii) What is Kelvin scale? How it is related with celsius scale?

When solid is heated, the amplitude of vibration of atoms and molecules increases. Therefore effective interatomic separation increases and cause thermal expansion. Thermal expansion of solids are of three types: (i) Linear expansion (ii) Area expansion (iii) Volume expansion. Thermal expansion of liquid are of two kinds. Real expansion and apparent expansion that occurs in form of volume expansion. Thermal expansion of water is anomalous i.e., volume of given amount of water first decreases with increase in temperature from 0 °C to 4 °C and beyond 4 °C volume of water increases with rise of temperature. In thermal expansion of gases is more than solid and liquid but coefficient of volume expansion is dependent on temperature for gases. (i) On what factors does the coefficient of thermal expansion depend? Write its S.I. unit. (ii) Write the relation between the three coefficients of expansion  \(\alpha, \beta\)  and  \(\gamma\)   for solid. (iii) A body at higher temperature contains more heat. Comment. (iv) Why are clock pendulums usually made of invar? (v) Draw graphical variation of volume and temperature for water. (vi) How is coefficient of thermal expansion of gases related to temperature? (vii) State water equivalent.

States of matter viz: solid, liquid and gas are function of temperature and heat content. During the change of state of a substance, the exchange of heat takes place between the substance and surrounding. In this process temperature of substance remains constant. At certain temperature known as melting point. Both the solid and liquid states of the substance coexist in thermal equilibrium. Similarly, at boiling point both the liquid and vapour states of the substance co-exist in the thermal equilibrium. There are certain substance which on heating directly pass from solid to vapour state without passing through the liquid state. This is sublimation process in which solid changes to vapour state of the substance. Process of change of state depends on pressure and temperature. (i) Define triple point. (ii) Define latent heat of a substance.  (iii) What is principle of calorimetry? (iv) What is effect of pressure on the melting point of a substance? (v) State phenomenon of relegation. (vi) What is boiling point? What is effect of pressure on the boiling point? (vii) What is sublimation?

Three cylindrical rods A, Band C of equal lengths and equal diameters are joined in series as shown in the figure. Their thermal conductivities are 2K, K and 0.5 K respectively. 100°C  \(\begin{array}{|l|l|l|} \hline \mathrm{A} & \mathrm{B} & \mathrm{C} \\ \hline \end{array}\)  0°C In the steady-state, the free ends of rods A and C are at 100 °C and a 0°C respectively. Neglecting loss of heat from the curved surfaces of rods. (i) Determine the temperature of the junction between rods A and B. (ii) Determine the temperature of the junction between rods Band C. (iii) Determine the equivalent thermal conductivity of the combination. (iv) Define coefficient of thermal conductivity of a solid. Write its S.I unit. Two rods A and B are of equal length. Each rod has the ends at temperature T 1  and T 2  What is the condition that will ensure equal rates of flow of heat through the rods A and B?

All bodies emit heat energy from their surface by virtue of their temperature. This heat energy is called radiant energy or thermal radiation. The heat that we receive from the sun is transferred to us by a process which, unlike conduction and convection, does not require the help of a medium in intervening space which is almost free of particles. Radiant energy travels in space as electromagnetic waves in the infra-red region of electromagnetic spectrum. They exhibit the phenomenon of interference, diffraction, and polarization as light does. The emission of radiation from a hot body is expressed in terms of that emitted from a reference body (called the black body) at the same temperature. A black body absorbs and emits radiations of all wavelengths. The total energy E emitted by a unit area of a black body per second is given by E =  \(\sigma T^{4}\)   Where T - is absolute temperature of the body and a is Stefan's constant, if the body is not the perfect black body, then E =  \(\varepsilon \sigma T^{4}\)  , where  \(\varepsilon\)   is the emissivity of the body. (i) Determine the dimensions of Stefan's constant a from Stefan - Boltzman law. (ii) What is S.I unit of Stefan's constant? (iii) In which region of the electromagnetic spectrum do thermal radiation lie? (iv) Which device is used to detect thermal radiation? (v) When a body A at a higher temperature T 1  is surrounded by another body B at a lower temperature T 2 . Write the relation between the rate of loss of heat from body A and temperature. (vi) On what factor does the rate at which energy is radiated by a body depends? (vii) On which parameter does the colour of a star depends upon?

(i) Temperature of a body is the measure of degree of hotness or coldness. It determines the direction of flow of heat when this body is placed in contact with another body i.e., hotter end to colder end. (ii) One calorie is the amount of heat required at a pressure of I atm. to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water through 1 o C. 1 calorie = 4.186 Joules. (iii) Thermometer is based on change in property of matter with temperature. Some common properties are: (i) variation of volume of liquid with temperature. (ii) variation of pressure with temperature. (iii) variation of resistance of metal with temperature. (iv) variation of thermo emf with temperature of a junction in a thermocouple etc. (iv) Reference point for measuring temperature are steam point and ice point of water at standard pressure. (v)  \(\frac{T_{C}}{100}=\frac{T_{F}-32}{180}\)   (vi) It is the temperature at which pressure P of gas would reduce to zero so also volume V of the gas. It is the lowest attainable temperature. 0 °K = -273.15 °C. (vii) Scale of temperature with its zero at -273.15 °C and size of each degree same as on the celsius scale, is called kelvin scale T K = t °C + 273.15

(i) It is a particular point on the P- T phase diagram representing a particular pressure and temperature at which the substance can co-exist in all the three states viz. Solid, liquid and vapour. (ii) It is the amount of heat energy required to change the state of unit mass of a substance from solid to liquid or from liquid to vapour without any change in temperature. (iii) Calorimeter works on the principle that heat lost by one body is equal to heat gained by other provided no heat escape from system to surrounding in any form. (iv) Melting point of a substance decreases with increase in pressure. (v) Phenomenon of refreezing of ice when pressure is reduced is known as relegation. (vi) The temperature at which the liquid and vapour states of substance are in thermal equilibrium with each other i.e., vapour pressure becomes equal to external pressure. Boiling point of a substance increases with increase in external pressure. (vii) On heating a substance, the change from solid state to vapour state without passing through the liquid state is called sublimation. e.g., camphor, iodine and solid carbon dioxide are sublime substance.

(i) In the steady-state, the rate of flow of heat is the same for all rods. If T 1  and T 2 are the temperatures at the junction points between A, Band C respectively. Then \(\frac{Q}{t}=\frac{K_{A} A\left(100-T_{1}\right)}{d}\)   =  \(\frac{K_{B} A\left(T_{1}-T_{2}\right)}{d}\)   =  \(\frac{K_{C} A\left(T_{2}-0\right)}{d}\)   Given K A =2K 1   K B  = K and K c =0.5K. Hence 2(100 - T 1  ) = (T 1  - T 2 ) = 0.5(T 2 - 0) and T 1  - T 2 = 0.5T 2 T 1  = 85.7 °C. (ii) Since T 1  = 85.7 °C, therefore T 2 = 57.1 °C using 200 - 2T 1  = 0.5T 2 (iii) Since the rods have the same lengths and the same diameters, the equivalent thermal conductivity of the series combination is \(\frac{1}{K_{e}}=\frac{1}{K_{A}}+\frac{1}{K_{B}}+\frac{1}{K_{C}}\)   =  \(\frac{1}{2 K}+\frac{1}{K}+\frac{1}{0.5 K}\)   K e =  \(\frac{2 K}{7}\)   (iv) Coefficient of thermal conductivity of a solid is equal to the rate of flow of heat per unit area per unit temperature gradient across the solid.
