Library Standard Binding (Buckram) The least expensive book we offer is the library standard binding. This is machine oversewn, with a black buckram cloth cover binding of acid-free construction. Your last name and date of degree are gold stamped on the spine. This is the binding style that graduate students need in order to meet the requirements for a Doctorate at Princeton University. It is also attractive enough for presentation to advisors or undergraduate thesis submissions.

Books up to ½-inch thick are made with a square (unrounded) spine. We round and back the spine for sizes above ½ an inch.

Buckram Roundback Binding The buckram roundback binding includes all the features of our library binding process. In addition, we gold foil stamp the book’s title and your full name on the front cover along with a separator line between the title and name. On the spine we will put your last name and date of degree, along with decorative double lines at the top and bottom of the spine. Our stamping design can be varied to meet the requirements of your school. Stamping colors available include gold, silver, copper, white, black, red and blue.

PAPER CHOICE

The second consideration for Thesis Book Binding or Dissertation Book Binding is choosing the type of paper that you want. We offer 5 types of paper as listed below and as explained here in greater detail ( https://phdbookbinding.com/digital-printing/ )

20lb regular or standard Copy Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have  a watermark. Acid Free paper is made from wood pulp, and it resists yellowing and brittleness over very long periods (measured in centuries). The production of Acid Free paper is also more environmentally friendly than acidic paper.

60lb regular or standard Copy Paper (also known as 24lb Copy Paper)*. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. Acid Free paper is made from wood pulp, and it resists yellowing and brittleness over very long periods (measured in centuries). The production of Acid Free paper is also more environmentally friendly than acidic paper. (See below for why this paper has 2 different names)

20lb, 25% Cotton Paper. This white paper is ACID-FREE and ARCHIVAL. It has a WATERMARK which is visible only when you shine a bright light behind the sheet. Archival paper has all the benefits of Acid-Free paper, except that it resists yellowing and brittleness even longer than ordinary Acid-Free paper. Another difference is that Cotton Paper is made with cotton pulp.

24lb, 100% Cotton Paper . This white paper is ACID-FREE and ARCHIVAL. It has a WATERMARK which is visible only when you shine a bright light behind the sheet. Archival paper has all the benefits of Acid-Free paper, except that it resists yellowing and brittleness even longer than ordinary Acid-Free paper. Another difference isthat Cotton Paper is made with cotton pulp. PLEASE NOTE that A4 (European Letter size) is NOT available in 100% cotton.

80lb Gloss-Coated Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. But unlike regular copy paper, it is also coated with a gloss finish that makes it perfect for printing photos, charts & graphs, and more.

80lb Matte-Coated Paper. This paper is ACID-FREE and is white in color. It does not have a watermark. But unlike regular copy paper, it is also coated with a matte (non-gloss coating) finish that makes it perfect for printing photos, charts & graphs, and more.

BINDING STYLE

Dissertation Binding and Printing Options | Comparison and Tips

Your dissertation is finally finished, you got it proofread and checked for plagiarism . The final step is printing your dissertation, which means choosing between:

• Types of binding
• Colour vs. black & white

Single vs. double sided

Aside from keeping the pages of your dissertation together, the binding is also responsible for your supervisor’s first impression of your dissertation. There are various types of binding, ranging from the cheaper spiral binding to the more expensive hardcover book binding .

The type of binding should depend on:

• Guidelines from your university or professor
• Your dissertation’s version (draft vs. final)
• Type of dissertation (PhD vs. undergraduate dissertation)

Spiral binding (± £7)

• Professional appearance
• Browsing through the pages is easy (can be opened flat)
• Fairly cheap

Comb binding (± £5)

• Enables easy browsing of the pages
• Binding can be opened and closed (not easily)
• Has a cheap appearance

Fastback binding (± £8)

• Professional book-like appearance
• Available in different colours
• Risk of pages falling out after a while

Paperback binding (£10-20)

• Durable and professional
• Book-like appearance
• Opening and browsing is less smooth than with spiral or comb binding

Hardback binding (£20-40)

• Customizable cover
• Quality comes at a price

Colour vs. Black & White

Unless specifically stated in your university guidelines, it is up to you to decide whether to print your dissertation in colour or black & white. Printing in colour is on average two to four times more expensive.

In general, a colour-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is not required. Does your dissertation contain graphs or figures that rely on colour? Be sure to print at least these pages in colour.

Printing double sided is often cheaper than printing single sided due to the paper savings – it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single sided. Be sure to check the guidelines.

When printing your dissertation double sided, pay attention to the following points:

• New chapters should start on the right side. You will need to take this into account and insert “blank pages” when preparing your dissertation.
• Add a blank page after the title page so that the acknowledgements or abstract are not printed on the back of your title page.
• The page numbering is often placed bottom right on the right side of the page and bottom left on the left side. You can easily set this in Word by choosing “outside alignment”.

Paper weight

The thickness of the paper (measured in gsm or grams) is something most students don’t think about, but it does have a significant impact on the look and feel of your dissertation.

Standard printing paper has a weight of 75-90 gsm. For a bachelor’s or master’s dissertation this is fine. If you want the paper to look and feel more professional and durable, a paper weight of 100-130 gsm is better. This is often used for PhD dissertations.

Number of copies

It is common to print three to five copies of your dissertation. Depending on your university’s guidelines you might need to submit one to three copies to your supervisor. In addition, you might want to have a copy for yourself or your family.

The production (printing and binding) takes on average two days, and delivery takes another day. For an additional charge (ranging from +20 to +80%), the production and delivery time can be shortened.

Have a looming deadline? Your local printing shop is probably able to print and bind your dissertation faster, and it eliminates delivery time. However, keep in mind that this is often a little more expensive.

Before sending your dissertation to a printing shop, there are three things you should do:

1. Save your dissertation as a PDF By saving your file as a PDF, the formatting will be consistent on every computer. This way you prevent any unpleasant surprises such as offsets when receiving your printed dissertation.

2. Check for language mistakes There’s nothing worse than finding a language mistake in your printed version. Make sure to proofread your dissertation or make use of a professional dissertation proofreading service .

3. Update the contents page Before saving your dissertation as a PDF, update the (automatic) table of contents. Don’t forget to cross-check the page numbers listed in the table of contents with the actual page number.

Spiral/helical/wired binding.

Spiral binding (also known as helical binding) and wired binding are very common for bachelors and masters dissertations. These options give a professional look and allow pages to be rotated 360 degrees, making for easy reading. Spiral binding uses a plastic coil, whilst wire binding uses a metal wire.

Fastback/softback binding

Fastback binding (also referred to as softback binding) uses glue to keep your dissertation pages together. This is not a very common choice for dissertation binding as it is rather formal for bachelors and masters, and perhaps not formal enough for PhD theses. Fastback binding also comes with a risk of glue losing fixity over time leading to pages falling out.

Thermal binding

Thermal binding is not very common but can be used for bachelors or masters dissertations. This type of binding is permanent (so pages cannot be easily added/removed) but is generally inexpensive. Another disadvantage of thermal bindings is that pages cannot be opened 360 degrees (as with fastback binding).

Plastic comb binding

Comb binding involves punching holes down the side of the page and binding with a plastic comb strip. This binding option is also suitable for bachelors and masters dissertations. It is a cheap option but can sometimes become difficult to navigate as pages become stuck on the plastic combing. One advantage of plastic comb binding is that it is easy to add and remove pages.

Paperback binding

Paperback binding will give your manuscript the appearance of a book and comes with personalisation options i.e. a titled cover page, spine and back. This gives a very professional appearance, too formal for a bachelors or masters dissertation, but ideal for a PhD thesis.

Hardback binding

Hardback binding again gives a book like appearance, but is expensive and typically reserved only for PhD theses. In addition to custom titling, spine and back, there is a range of material and colour options for hardback binding e.g. the gold lettering you may have seen on academic books.

What Paper Size Should I use?

Most universities will provide very clear instruction on paper sizes, most often A4. However, some pages such as technical drawings or maps may be best shown on A3. In these cases ‘fold out’ pages are an option but must be approved by your university guidelines.

Print Options:

Check your university guidelines when deciding whether to print single or double sided. If printing double sided, be careful as some pages should not be printed back to back. For example, new chapters should start on the right hand page (of a double spread) so blank pages may be required.

What Paper Quality is Suitable?

Paper thickness is measured in grams per square metre (gsm). Although there is no ideal paper thickness, too thin and you risk your dissertation feeling low quality. Too high and you risk your dissertation pages feeling like cardboard, and again pointing to low quality.

Thesis Online has been around for a long time (established in 1920), and have a very good reputation. They offer an online thesis binding service and have a hand online calculator which allows you to modify your binding, printing, and deliver options and see the impact on cost in real-time.

Things to Note:

Whichever service you use to bind your thesis or dissertation, there are a few important things to remember:

When using an online service check the turnaround time. Most services take around a week to print, bind, and deliver, though faster services are available at a cost. Some universities have an onsite printing service that students can use. These services likely offer binding options which satisfy your department’s dissertation submission requirements.

An electronic copy and physical copy of your dissertation will be read differently. Whilst consecutive pages are easy to compare on a computer screen, a physical copy may have pages printed on opposite sides of a single page (if double page printed) which makes side by side comparisons difficult. This is something to consider if your text frequently refers to images or tables overleaf.

Most thesis printing services only accept PDF file formats. Ensure that when you convert your dissertation to PDF that you review the document to ensure no errors occur during conversion.

Check your university dissertation guidance on margin requirements. It is also important to factor in margins when considering binding options. Typically a minimum margin of 2.5cm is required on the side of the page to be bound.

Although it comes with an additional cost, it may be useful to purchase personal copies of your bound thesis. You can then bring your bound copy to your Viva , and ensure that what you and your examiners are looking at are identical.

In the UK, a dissertation, usually around 20,000 words is written by undergraduate and Master’s students, whilst a thesis, around 80,000 words, is written as part of a PhD.

We offer three styles of thesis hardcover binding. Traditional colors for the cover material are Navy Blue or Black. Cover lettering (including the UC Seal when Style 3 is selected) is printed UC Gold, white, or black.

Submitting Your Thesis to SU Libraries for Binding

You're required to submit TWO hard copies of your manuscript to the SU Libraries for binding: one copy for the Libraries' Archives (NABB) and one copy for the general collection. 

Submit the hard copies of your thesis to the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) . Staff in the Office of Graduate Studies conducts a technical review of all paper copies of the manuscript for appropriate paper type, sequence of document, and formatting. After passing technical review, staff in the Office of Graduate Studies will deliver all approved paper copies to SU Libraries for binding. For assistance, please contact  Jessica Scott, Graduate Program Manager, at [email protected]. 

Preparing Your Thesis for Binding

Step 1:  Prepare two required hard copy of your thesis to be submitted to the SU Libraries for binding.  Binding of library copies are free to you.

• at least 25% rag content (a.k.a. cotton or high quality bond) paper
• 8.5 x 11 inches
• To allow for the binding process to not interfere with the text of your printed thesis,   margins (including appendices) should be one and one half (1 ½) inches on the left margin and one (1) inch on the top, right, and bottom margins 
• print on one side only 

Step 2:  Submit the required hard copies of your thesis to the Office of Graduate Studies for technical review and approval.

Note: Staff in the Office of Graduate Studies conducts a technical review of all paper copies of the manuscript. If the technical review reveals significant formatting concerns, you may be referred back to your doctoral committee to make changes to your manuscript prior to approving it for the library collection. After passing technical review, staff in the Office of Graduate Studies will deliver all approved paper copies to SU Libraries for binding. 

Printing services

You can print your thesis using the Résumé Printing Station located in the Perdue Hall 141 IT Computer Lab. Instructions are located at the printer. You should bring your own high-quality resume paper.

Binding Departmental Copies

If your department requires a copy, or copies, of your thesis, you must prepare the required number of departmental copies and submit them to the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) for technical review and approval. The OGS staff will deliver the approved departmental copy or copies to SU Libraries for binding.  

Binding Personal Copies

As a service to SU students, SU Libraries provides the option to have personal copies of a thesis project bound professionally. You must prepare your own print copies of your manuscript and submit them to the Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) for technical review and approval. The OGS staff will deliver the approved personal copy or copies to the SU Libraries for binding.

Binding Cost

• Binding library copies Free to students.
• Binding departmental and/or personal copies The Office of Graduate Studies (OGS) will cover binding costs for up to four (4) copies (1 department and/or 3 personal copies).
• Binding additional departmental copies Departments may opt to pay for additional copies for students ($26.50 per copy).
• Binding additional personal copies If you want to bind additional personal copies, the cost is $26.50 per copy. The payment can be cash or check. A check should be made out to Salisbury University.

Getting Bound Copies Back

The company that binds SU manuscripts makes periodic trips to SU Libraries to pick up raw copies and to return bound manuscripts.

When bound manuscripts are returned to SU Libraries, the two library copies are added to the Nabb Research Center Theses & Dissertations Collection and the general Stacks Collection and the remaining copies are given to Stephen Ford for distribution. Stephen will contact the student and department to verify where personal and departmental copies should go and to make arrangements for pick up or mailing. At least one copy will be sent to the originating department.

Comb binding

Available at St Katharine's West

Comb binding is a type of soft binding where all pages are punched down the left-hand side and held together with a plastic comb spine. It has a clear acetate front cover and card back cover.

Fabric spine soft binding

Available at 65 North Street

Fabric spine soft binding is a popular choice for dissertation binding and can be completed while you wait in the following options: 

• 100gsm paper, 290 single-sided pages maximum
• 80gsm paper, 350 single-sided pages maximum

Hard case binding

Hard case binding is mainly used for final submission of PhD and MPhil research degrees . 

It is a type of hardcover book binding using Buckram, a hardwearing bookbinder's cloth. The cover is printed with a gold foil block with the title of the document and the ‌author's name, which is also imprinted on the spine. The pages are bound to the spine. There are four options for hard case binding available:

• Standard black binding   Maximum of 280 sheets, normally printed single-sided but can be printed double-sided (560 pages). The minimum number of sheets for hard binding is 100 (or 200 pages if printed double-sided). Allow three days for binding after supplying the printed material.
• Dissertation hard case binding This is the same as standard black binding, except there is no imprint on the spine. Allow three days for binding after supplying the printed material.
• Deluxe black binding   Includes gold foil printed crest, title and name, gold and black ribbon markers and gold gilt corners. Allow three days for binding after supplying the printed material.
• Delux colour binding Includes all the features of deluxe black binding, but the Buckram is in colour. These take approximately two weeks for delivery. Contact [email protected]  for more information.

Stitch binding

The Print Unit can digitally produce A4, A5 and A6 stitch bind books, brochures and magazines from 8 pages up to 100 pages on 80gsm white or colour paper.

Unibind - soft binding system

Unibind is a type of soft binding in which all the pages are glued to the rigid, black spine. This is a popular option for dissertation binding .

Unibinding is available with or without the acetate cover sheets. If you choose not to use acetate, a sheet of black card will be added at the back as usual. For dissertation printing, you should check first with your supervisor that this will be acceptable. 

Wire binding

Wire binding is a type of soft binding where all pages are punched down the left-hand side and held together with a metal wire spine. It has a clear acetate front cover and card back cover.

Student guide to binding your thesis or dissertation.

Binding your thesis or dissertation is not required.

Once your thesis has been accepted and approved by the Office of Graduate Programs you may submit your thesis to be bound via an online bindery. While Florida Tech does not endorse a particular bindery, the following companies have experience working with theses and dissertations.

Prices will vary by company, order specifications and shipping. Please review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) of each company online for more specific information about how to submit your order.

Some questions to consider are:

• How many copies would you like?
• Is it a requirement of your sponsor to present a bound thesis upon return home?
• How quickly do you need your bound copy?
• Do you need international shipping?
• Would you like to include your original signature page in your bound copy?
• Is a scanned copy of your signature page OK?

Most binding companies allow for the following customizations of your thesis:

Florida Tech Copy Center

• The Florida Tech Copy Center can bind your thesis with a soft cover spiral bind with a clear acetate front sheet.
• The Copy Center is in the Academic Quad, Building 406, Room 122.
• The document can be printed on 20lb, 24lb or 28lb paper.
• Students can order this product online through the  Copy Center Storefront .
• Pick-up time within three (3) days.

GradWorks Online

• GradWorks Online will ship to multiple addresses as well as ship International Economy.
• Only prints 8.5” x 11” with the inside pages slightly smaller.
• Front cover lettering only.
• Paper type is limited to standard or 25% cotton.

PHD Book Binding

• Includes the choice to have The Florida Institute of Technology seal applied to the front

cover . Use the Gold Foil Emblem and Lettering menu to select Florida Tech’s university emblem.

• A sample bound thesis is available to review at the Library iDesk.
• If notified, PHD will hold binding until the signature pages arrive in the mail.
• You may specify particular pages to be printed in color.

• Thesis On Demand ships to U.S. addresses only, no PO boxes.
• Requires an extra order form and fee to mail original signature pages for inclusion.

The U of T Bookstore is happy to help you acquire bound copies of your thesis. We can both print and bind your thesis, or bind copies of your thesis printed elsewhere.

To get an estimate of cost for this service, complete the request form . An estimate will appear at the bottom of the form based on the information you provide. Information about Binding Styles can be found below.

Thesis Binding Timing (after Printing complete)

Standard timescale: approx. 10 business days.

Once we have your printed thesis, we send your thesis to our offsite bindery, and it will be ready for you in approximately 10 business days.

• Submit a Thesis Request form . For style information, see below
• Provide a printed copy of your thesis (We can print it! The Thesis Printing page has details.)
• Bookstore confirms pricing; you pay for the services chosen.
• Bookstore sends the copies of the thesis out to the bindery
• You get a call and pick up your bound theses after approximately 10 business days.

Styles of binding

• Hardcover Binding (sometimes called casebound books)
• Standard – the most common choice
• Jones- required for some engineering programs; has more information on the cover than Standard
• A4 – non-standard size
• Extras available for Hardcover Bindings
• Softcover Binding (less expensive options)

Hardcover Binding

All our hardcover books are hand sewn and made of Buckram, a stiff cloth made of cotton (and occasionally linen depending on the colour) which has been used to cover and protect books for hundreds of years.

The STANDARD and JONES style differ only by the amount of information printed on the cover and spine of the book

The A4 style uses the standard style of cover, but is for the A4 paper size, which is commonly used in Europe.

Please contact us for large quantities as we may be able to work out a special price for you.

For all hardcover binding styles, reinforcement is necessary if the thesis is thicker than 1.5 inches. The surcharge for reinforcement is as follows:

Standard Style

• The title of your thesis
• The thesis year

Jones Style 1

The Jones Style is required for the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering and certain Masters of Applied Science degrees. Please check with your department if a Jones Style binding is required

• The degree (for example, Ph.D. Thesis)
• The University Department (for example, Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering)
• The University / Institution
• 40 characters of the title (we can assist you in condensing your title to 40 characters)
• The degree (for example, M.Eng.)

1 If your thesis is not an M.A.Sc. or an M. Eng. in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, a small surcharge of $7 per copy will be applied. This is due to the fact that special printing plates will have to be made.

We also offer A4 binding. This is usually used in Europe and for other specific submissions.

Extras and Additions

We offer a number of extras that we can add to personalize your thesis and make it a special, memorable and attractive book to treasure.

• Additional lines on the cover: $8 per line, per copy
• Add the title on the spine: $9 per copy
• Add the University of Toronto crest to the cover: $16.50 for the first copy, and $11 for additional copies
• Add a ribbon: $6 per copy
• Add bands to the top and bottom of the spine: $7 per copy
• Add a CD pocket: $6 per copy
• Spine Bars: $7 per copy
• Font change on covers (italics, symbols, etc) $3.50 per copy

Softcover Binding

Softcover binding is a cheaper alternative to hardcover binding. There are fewer options for each type of binding. Please note that these bindings also take the standard 10 business days to complete.

Limp Binding – each copy $27

The front and back covers are a thick coloured card, and the spine is a black cloth strip.

Cover colours available: Light blue, grey, and green

The title page will be reproduced on the front cover. There is no printing on the spine

Coil Binding – each copy $16

We offer Coil binding services. This is stronger and more durable than Cerlox binding, and is our recommendation for the lowest price-point binding.

The front cover is a transparent, clear plastic cover sheet so your title page shows through. The back cover is thick card stock.

Cerlox Binding – each copy $16

We also offer the popular Cerlox (or "comb") binding.

Thesis Submission and Binding

Butler University Libraries offers thesis binding as a service for current students enrolled in a program requiring a written thesis component. Using an online form, you will submit a digital copy of your completed thesis, including all cover page and signature components required by your department. The Libraries will print and bind one physical copy to be housed in the library collection.

At the time of submission, you may also purchase bound personal or department copies for $25 each, payable by credit or debit card. Please allow 8-12 weeks of processing time for the binding process and submit a permanent address if you wish to have bound copies mailed to you.  If you have a question about submitting your thesis or ordering bound print copies, please contact Annette Muyumba (317-940-9415).

Students will also have the opportunity to make their work widely available through Digital Commons, an online archive of Butler University scholarship. For more information on Digital Commons , please contact  Jennifer Coronado  (317-940-9206) or  Cale Erwin  (317-940-9236).

For graduate theses that are CD or DVD recordings with a recital program and no other written component, please submit a library copy directly to the School of Music’s Director of Graduate Studies.

• An electronic version of your thesis in PDF form

How do I order a personal copy?

Once you submit your thesis, you will receive an email with a link and instructions on how to order and pay for a print copy for yourself and/or your department. Copies are $25 a piece and can be paid for with a credit or debit card.

What’s this Digital Commons thing?

When you submit your thesis, you have the option of making your thesis openly available in Digital Commons, a digital archive of the scholarly and creative output of Butler University. Student theses are some of our most popular content, receiving thousands of hits every year! The Special Collections reading rooms in Firestone and Mudd Libraries will be closed on the following upcoming holidays: Monday, May 27 (Memorial Day), Wednesday, June 19 (Juneteenth), Thursday, July 4 (Independence Day), and Monday, September 2 (Labor Day). We will be closing at 12:00pm on Friday, June 14. We will also begin our Summer Hours, 9am-4:15pm, on Monday, June 3. Searching for & Ordering a copy of a Princeton University Undergraduate Senior Theses

The Seeley G. Mudd Manuscript Library is the central repository for Princeton University undergraduate senior theses from 1924 to the present.

• Members of the University community with an active NetID can access digital theses in Dataspace when connected to any Princeton-networked computer (if you’re not on campus, please first connect to the campus network via the GlobalProtect or SonicWall desktop applications).
• Independent researchers who are not members of the University community (including Princeton alumni) should use DataSpace to browse senior theses. Please create a Special Collections Research Account prior to submitting the Senior Thesis Order Form. In some cases we will be unable to digitize the senior thesis due to an embargo that prohibits digital access. Copyright of the theses are held by the author.

Searching for & Ordering a copy of a Princeton University Ph.D. Dissertation or Master's Theses

All researchers, prior to contacting Mudd Library, should search the following platforms for the dissertation they are in need of: 

For Princeton Ph.D. Dissertations from 2011 - present, please search and access via the Dataspace repository for Princeton University Doctoral Dissertations . These are accessible to everyone for free, regardless of Princeton University association.

To obtain Princeton Ph.D. Dissertations from 2010 and earlier, if you are associated with an institution that has a ProQuest Library Subscription, the dissertation may be available to download for free through the ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global search .

If a circulating copy is available via the Princeton University Catalog , those within the United States and Canada who have access to a local Interlibrary Loan service (ILL ) or Borrow Direct can request physical delivery through their library. 

If you are not associated with an institution with a ProQuest Library Subscription, you can purchase the dissertation through ProQuest Dissertation Express .

For Master’s Theses search the Princeton University Library Catalog and contact Mudd Library to discuss digitization of the original.

If the dissertation is unavailable in any of the above platforms, please contact Mudd Library to discuss digitization of the original. Mudd Library is only able to digitize those that are out of copyright or unavailable via ProQuest. In some cases we will be unable to digitize the dissertation due to an embargo placed by the student that prohibits digital access. If this is the case, the dissertation can only be viewed in the Mudd Library Reading Room after placing a request via the Princeton University Catalog . Copyright of the dissertations are held by the author.
