This is an emerging technology that is helpful to uncontaminated the soil and water bodies from lethal pollutants. Moreover, it is economically best and rudimentary way out to make improvements in the economies.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

CFD is a science that helps produce quantitative predictions of the fluid-flow phenomenon based on conservation law. It is an evolution to solve the equations of fluid motion numerically to analyze the fluid flow phenomena. Finite-difference and finite-flow are two approaches to Computational Fluid Dynamics. This is applied to mathematics, physics as well as computational software to analyze the flow of gas or liquid and how the flow of gas affects the object.

It refers to the refinement of product design to optimize them for human use. In this, height, weight, proportions, hearing, sights, temperature and other things related to human characteristics are considered. Sometimes, it is also known as human factors engineering. If the ergonomic products are poorly made or improperly designed, then the person, who is using it, can suffer from unnecessary fatigue, stress as well as injury too.

Energy Audit

Energy is significant for all humans and its proper usage must be assigned. So, an energy audit is the optimization of energy cost, pollution control, safety realms and also advises to improve the operating as well as maintenance practices of the system. It provides vital information related to all the energy conservation programs which include the utilization of energy and evaluate the measures related to energy conservation.

It is the monoalkyl esters of fatty acids resultant from renewable feedstocks like vegetable oil or animal fats, for engine use. Moreover, it is less costly than oil, environment-friendly and non-toxic. In addition to this, it doesn’t contain any particle of sulfur and also not responsible for global warming due to the non-contribution of fossil fuels.

Soil Profile

It refers to the cross-section of the soil vertically and can be seen by exhuming a rectangular pit or layer by layer sampling of soil. During the formation of the soil, the soil is found and arranged in layers. The layers formed are called horizons and the series of soil is the soil profile. A layer can be observed by colour and has distinctive characteristics.

Presentations and posters are a key part of any profession. They are a way to share information to clients, colleagues, or the public in a simple visual format. Learn how to organize, format, and present your presentation or poster.

Presenting vs. Writing

Presentations are meant to convey much of the same information as a written report – but that does not mean you slap some figures and quotes on some slides and it makes a good presentation. You need to think carefully about the content and what you will say versus what is in writing on the slide.

Some of the key differences in presenting vs. writing are:

Brevity – a presentation is generally shorter than a written report. You cannot get all the information in your report to fit into a presentation – so don’t try to. What you need to do is to select only the most valuable and important information. What are you trying the communicate and what does the audience really need to know in order to make the right decisions? It’s not easy cutting out what you feel are some really cool things about your work, but if it is not something the audience needs to know then leave it out. You can always refer them to the written report (or to yourself) if there are questions.
Display – Screen space is different than paper space. While paper tends to be black and white, on the screen you can make use of colors and even animations to make your presentation pop. But don’t get too carried away and make a wild color scheme a distraction. Also, make sure that the font is readable for the people in the back of the room (yes, people really do want to be able to read the axis of a graph). So, in general, make sure no font size less than 12pt anywhere. For text in the presentation use at least 18 pt.
Balance of Text and Graphics – Don’t use a lot of text on your slides and don’t read your slides to the audience! If you use too much text you might as well make it a written report and then what is the point of you presenting. The text on the slides should be the most important summary information (you don’t even have to use complete sentences). Graphics are also a great way to convey information. In general, you want at least one graphic on every slide.
Delivery – It’s not just the words you say but also how you say them. The nonverbal communication in your presentation can make a large impression on the overall quality of the presentation. Try to be calm, confident, and engaging with the audience. Make sure that your presentation helps the audience follow your train of thought and grasp the key concepts.
Engagement – In a presentation you want to engage with the audience. This means interacting with the audience (eye contact) and providing a presentation that entices them. Often you can begin a presentation with a short “hook” that grab’s the audience’s attention (anecdote, story, questions, applicable joke, etc.). This helps to engage the audience but also can be used to express the significance of the presentation.

Organization of the Presentation

Most presentations follow a fairly standard organization listed here. However, there are cases where different organizations need to be used so be sure to know what your audience needs. In making your slides you need to make sure that each slide conveys one main point usually described by the slide title.

Title Slide

The first slide is usually the title slide. It does much the same job as the cover page in a written report. You should give the title of your presentation, who is presenting (and who worked on the project), and affiliations (such as the company you work for or who is sponsoring the project). While presenting the title slide (or adding another after it) you may include your “hook” to help engage the audience and grab their attention.

Outline/Overview

The next slide generally gives an outline. It does much the same job as an abstract or a table of contents in a written report. You should let the audience know where you are going. Outline the project and the results that will be presented. Don’t use a generic outline, but tailor it to your presentation.

Motivation and Objectives

The third slide generally sets the stage for the audience. Why do they want to know about what you are presenting? What are the objectives of the project? What are the questions you are going to answer? This is probably your most important slide. Make sure the information on this slide ties the rest of your presentation together (every slide should be supporting the motivation and objectives and the conclusions should answer the questions raised here).

Experimental Setup or Design Requirements

If you are reporting on the results of an experiment you can describe the apparatus and procedures as well as any standards followed. If you are presenting a design report you can describe the requirements/constraints of the design problem and design goals.

The results section simply states the results of the design or laboratory experiments. In an experimental or laboratory research presentation the results will typically consist of the results of the calculations and/or experimental data. This is where you can put in your most important tables and figures that answer your research questions/objectives. Use limited text that highlights what the audience should take away from the graphic. You can explain in your speech the details. You should also give the audience an understanding of the methods used in analyzing your experiment. In a design presentation the results typically consist of calculation work done in interpreting the design. You don’t have to show all the calculations in a presentation, but you should give the audience an understanding of how you arrived at your design.

This is the heart of your presentation. You should present what you determined in the design or learned from the experiment. In an experimental or laboratory research presentation, you should analyze your results by discussing the data and interpreting your results. State the significance of your results clearly, and compare your results with theory or other work. Be sure to use quantitative comparisons in your discussion. Indicate if the results support the underlying theory or contradict it. In a design presentation, you should highlight the main recommendations of the design or compare the design with other alternatives. This may be where you evaluate the value vs. cost of the proposed design. The audience should have a clear understanding of why this design was chosen.

Conclusions and Recommendations

Based on the data you presented to the audience tell them what they should have learned or should do with that information. These conclusions should answer the motivations presented on the third slide. Conclusions are usually presented with a bulleted list on one slide (if you can’t fit it on one slide – then you need to work on focusing your presentation and weeding out extraneous information). Recommendations can be on the same or a separate slide.

Text Density

Don’t put a lot of words on your slide. Generally, slides will have fewer than 100 words (and that is only for a conclusion slide that can be more word heavy). Most slides will have only 10 to 30 words, some slides may have no words on them. Don’t use complete sentences. Rather used bulleted lists or short phrases. Do not read your slide to the audience. The point of a presentation is that you are talking to the audience, so say something they cannot read.

Follow the format suggestions for Figures, Tables, and Equations that you would use in a written report. You don’t have to number the graphics, but you do need to make sure they look good. If you did not produce the graphic be should to include a citation. Make sure all graphics appear clear and sharp. Don’t use too many graphics to too complicated of a slide. Too much will overwhelm the audience.

Consistency

You may think using lots of different fonts and other visual makers makes the presentation more interesting, but the key here is to keep things simple. Use visual markers (such as bold or italic font, different colors, or arrows and stars) to highlight key information on a slide, but don’t use so many that it becomes a distraction to the audience. Also, be consistent in your use. If you use one type of arrow to highlight something, use the same arrow throughout in the same way.

One of the benefits of a presentation is that they are in color, but you want to be careful with the use of color. PowerPoint has a wide array of colorful backgrounds that seem interesting, but don’t be tempted by these. In general, the background should be light, uniform, and dull. Dark text on light simple backgrounds are easier for the audience to read. Use colors sparingly to highlight important information, such as some text in red. Be careful, some colors (like yellow) show up well on a computer monitor but do not project as well. If possible do a trial run and try projecting your slide in the room you will be presenting in to check colors and make sure font is readable.

Slides give you a good amount of space and you want to make sure that you fill it without being overly crowded. Work with your presentation to make sure each slide is visually balanced and appealing. Also try to keep the same format through many slides.

Transitions and Animations

In PowerPoint, slide transitions and other animations (flying in text) can be used. These help the visual appeal of the presentation, but like colors, they should be used sparingly and consistently. For example, if you choose one method for a slide transition keep the same method throughout the presentation. If you want to animate the text (flying it in) then use the same method throughout. Try not to use too many animations (You don’t need a new fly in for every bullet. Its ok to put them all up at once and talk through them one by one).

Slide Titles

Slide titles are good to use. They help the audience know what the slide is about. But don’t use a lot of repetitive generic titles like “results.” Instead, use a title that describes the content on each slide. Each slide should convey only one main point.

Slide sizes are either 4:3 or 16:9. The squarer 4:3 size used to be the standard, but now more and more projectors use the 16:9 format. Know the room you will be presenting in and choose the correct size. If you use a 16:9 slide size and the projector is a 4:3 size, then your slides will not be projected as large.

One of the main differences between a presentation and a written report is that you will be speaking directly to the audience. A good presentation has a speaker that is effective, engaging, and confidant. Practice is the best way to improve your speaking. Practice in your home. Get friends and family to be an audience. Practice in the room you are to present to feel more familiar with it. Beyond practice, below are some suggestions for improving your speaking.
The presentation should be formal, specific, and complete. You need to use professional technical language. In some cases, the presentation may be less formal and more interactive. Know your audience.

Check the resolution of all visual elements in your poster design. Zoom to 100 or 200% to see if the images pixelate. Avoid this problem by using vector design elements and high-resolution images.
Ensure that charts and graphs are easy to read and don’t look crowded.
Analyze the visual hierarchy. Is there a visual flow through the title, introduction, data, and conclusion?
Take a step back and check if it’s legible from a distance. Is there enough white space for the content to breathe?
Does the design look inviting and interesting?

An often neglected topic arises when we need to print our designs for any exhibition purpose. Since A0 is a hard-to-manage format for most printers, these poster presentations result in heftier charges for the user. Instead, you can opt to work your design in two A1 sheets, which also becomes more manageable for transportation. Create seamless borders for the section on which the poster sheets should meet, or work with a white background.

Paper weight options should be over 200 gsm to avoid unwanted damage during the printing process due to heavy ink usage. If possible, laminate your print or stick it to photographic paper – this shall protect your work from spills.

Finally, always run a test print. Gray tints may not be printed as clearly as you see them on screen (this is due to the RGB to CMYK conversion process). Other differences can be appreciated when working with ink jet plotters vs. laser printers. Give yourself enough room to maneuver last-minute design changes.

Presenting a research poster is a big step in the poster presentation cycle. Your poster presentation might or might not be judged by faculty or peers. But knowing what judges look for will help you prepare for the design and oral presentation, regardless of whether you receive a grade for your work or if it’s business related. Likewise, the same principles apply when presenting at an in-person or virtual summit.

The opening statement

Part of presenting a research poster is welcoming the viewer to your small personal area in the sea of poster presentations. You’ll need an opening statement to pitch your research poster and get the viewers’ attention.

Draft a 2 to 3-sentence pitch that covers the most important points:

What the research is
Why was it conducted
What the results say

From that opening statement, you’re ready to continue with the oral presentation for the benefit of your attendees.

The oral presentation

During the oral presentation, share the information on the poster while conversing with the interested public. Practice many times before the event. Structure the oral presentation as conversation points, and use the poster’s visual flow as support. Make eye contact with your audience as you speak, but don’t make them uncomfortable.

Pro Tip: In a conference or summit, if people show up to your poster area after you’ve started presenting it to another group, finish and then address the new visitors.

QA Sessions

When you’ve finished the oral presentation, offer the audience a chance to ask questions. You can tell them before starting the presentation that you’ll be holding a QA session at the end. Doing so will prevent interruptions as you’re speaking.

If presenting to one or two people, be flexible and answer questions as you review all the sections on your poster.

Supplemental Material

If your audience is interested in learning more, you can offer another content type, further imprinting the information in their minds. Some ideas include; printed copies of your research paper, links to a website, a digital experience of your poster, a thesis PDF, or data spreadsheets.

Your audience will want to contact you for further conversations; include contact details in your supplemental material. If you don’t offer anything else, at least have business cards.

Even though conferences have changed, the research poster’s importance hasn’t diminished. Now, instead of simply creating a printed poster presentation, you can also make it for digital platforms. The final output will depend on the conference and its requirements.

Slideshow Presentation Skills

It’s tempting to spend all your time preparing for a presentation by working on the slides, but the slides are only a visual aid for the presentation. The point of a presentation is to have a presenter! Otherwise you could just make beautiful slides, print them out, and have the audience read them. Nevertheless, spending a fair amount of time making sure your slides support your presentation optimally is a good way to feel safe and in control while presenting. Having a kind of story built into your slides will help you remember what comes next while presenting.

Dress properly for the occasion. Whether you are presenting in a classroom, a conference, or a job talk, you are also presenting yourself to the audience. Avoid wearing casual attire (e.g. hats, tank tops, shorts or flip-flops), and try to wear something a bit more formal. This will also make you feel more confident during the presentation. However, there is no need to dress up with a full suit for class presentations or even many conferences, unless for an academic job talk or a presentation in a business or industry setting.

Before the presentation

Try to check out the presentation venue the day before, or if that is not possible, arrive early with plenty of time to set up and get settled. Nothing is more distracting during a presentation than technical and procedural problems. Here’s an incomplete checklist to go through in the half hour before your presentation:

Make sure that you can get the projector turned on, that your computer will show the slides, that any links you may have work, that you have your favorite slide clicker, that the slides look good under this lighting, etc. If you can, click through all your slides quickly.
If you plan to show videos with sound, make sure that your audience will be able to hear them properly.
Figure out where you’ll stand and whether you can walk around the stage without blocking the projector.
Enter Do Not Disturb or Airplane mode to avoid notifications.
If you are presenting your work at a conference or seminar, find out who will introduce you to the audience.

Starting the presentation

If you are speaking at a conference or a seminar, you will likely be introduced; take the stage thanking the host for the nice introduction and the opportunity to present. Then start your presentation by saying anything but the following words: “The title of my presentation is…” – your audience can presumably already read the title of your presentation on your cover slide, and it’s a missed opportunity to excite your audience. Here are a few better examples to start your presentation:

“I’m excited to tell you about the discoveries we have made how about different clades of Prochlorococcus evolve in different parts of the ocean”
“Today, I want to show you how we model the local climate and vegetation on the Galapagos islands, and how this allows us to predict how their vegetation will change as a result of climate change”
“I look forward to telling you about my research on a novel kind of concrete that can withstand much larger temperature fluctuations than what is currently used”

Try to find an opening sentence that makes your audience excited to learn what you’re going to present to them. Once you have figured out a good opening sentence (This is hard! Take your time!), write it down and memorize it; practice it! This will help make you feel secure as you start your presentation because there is no uncertainty – you go on stage and say the words you have rehearsed; by then, some of the stage fright may already have lifted and the rest is relatively smooth sailing.

During the presentation

When presenting, what you say is just as important as how you say it. The content of your talk determines how impactful your talk can be, and your delivery determines how impactful your talk actually is . Without a strong, engaging delivery, you will lose your audience’s attention and miss an opportunity to communicate your content. Effective public speaking combines verbal and nonverbal skills into a compelling presentation, and both skill sets are important enough to warrant their own articles. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Adjust your volume – err on the loud side, as many of us have the tendency to speak too softly (this is true even if you are speaking into a microphone).
Speak your words clearly and with confidence. Practice unusual or difficult to pronounce words.
Tailor your delivery – volume, rate, and inflection – to make your presentation easy to follow along.
Monitor your inflection and avoid monotone speech. This may mean speaking with more melody or gusto or enthusiasm than you are used to.
Use eye contact to engage your audience. If it’s a large room, turn your head or even body to talk to all corners of the room, not just the people in the middle. Rather than just scanning the audience, can you take time to make one-on-one eye contact with individuals? Use this as an opportunity to gauge the audience’s level of interest. Seeing how they respond to your slides, transitions, etc. can help you adjust your talk as you go.
Maintain good posture to feel more confident. Strong body postures (e.g., power poses) convey confidence and a sense of importance during your talk. A straight back and a level chin with your eyes facing the audience will show that you are prepared and ready. Hands on the side and a slightly wider stance command space on the stage and demands attention. Of course, overly dramatic, arrogant, or otherwise off-putting stances and posture should be avoided.
Emphasize deliberate movements and minimize unnecessary distractions (maximize signal-to-noise). For instance, if you are comparing two concepts, physically weigh them out with your hands to convey the difference as if your hands were a scale. Or, when transitioning between ideas, physically cue the viewers that there is a change in topic by casually walking to the other side of the stage.

(The metaphor of “signal-to-noise ratio” comes from Jean-luc Doumont’s book Trees, Maps, and Theorems .)

Ending the presentation

Just like you want to start strong, you want to end strong so that the audience remembers your key message. Summary slides can be helpful for this, but try to resist the temptation of including too many details. Find the (at most) three most important points and present them as a short and easy to read (and remember!) list, ideally with a striking picture to accompany each point.

Additionally, if you must make acknowledgements to people or funding sources, it is better to be specific with their contributions rather than giving general thanks and to ensure that only those who actually need to be thanked are thanked. You can also mention their contributions at the appropriate moments during the talk. Then, end your presentation with a variation of “And with that, I’ll be happy to take any questions.”

Taking questions

Getting questions after your presentation may feel like you failed in explaining your research properly, but the opposite is true: talks that were difficult to understand often elicit silence, whereas engaging talks will translate to an engaging Q&A afterwards.

Before presenting, prepare for the question and answer part of the talk. Figure out what questions you are likely to get (you can also indicate additional findings during your talk that you are leaving out in the interest of time, and more often than not someone will ask about them) and prepare yourself to answer them. Prepare backup slides that are more technical and that address a specific point. When you hear a question, wait patiently until the questioner has finished speaking. Then repeat the question in your own words:

“If I understand you correctly, you are asking whether…”, or
“That’s a great question: does A automatically imply B?”.

Take a breath before answering. This timing will allow other audience members to understand the question and will give you some time to formulate a cogent, coherent response. It is also much better to answer “I don’t know” to a question rather than bluff your way through a response.

Presenting remotely

There may come a time where you do not present your work in a physical seminar, but instead do so remotely. Many of the aspects discussed here still hold: make sure to test your setup (e.g., try sharing your screen in a Zoom conference with a friend), plan and practice your first few sentences, and so on. However, there are a few things to consider when presenting remotely; see this article for a more extensive list of tips.

Since you most likely cannot see your audience members, it is difficult to gauge the engagement and level of understanding of your audience. Consider adding breakpoints during your presentation to allow for questions. Wait longer than feels comfortable. If you have a moderator, communicate to them how you will take questions during your talk.
It is even more important to emphasize the focal part of your slide to support your presentation. Since you will need to rely more on verbal cues than nonverbal cues, use your voice to highlight important sentences, e.g., by inflection or repetition.
Consider making your slides a bit more explicit in case of a bad connection. Adding arrows, legends, or short descriptions will allow your audience to follow along even if they cannot hear you for a second or two.
Videos often do not work well in tele-conferences. If you must show a video, either send out a link so your audience can download the video beforehand and watch it locally. Better yet, if possible, show a few key still frames from your video instead.

A history of the Statue of Liberty getting destroyed or distorted in movie posters

"bring me your tired, your poor, your huddled audiences," say marketers for "civil war" to "cloverfield", by lisa laman.

The marketing campaign for "Civil War" began with one image. Shortly before the film’s trailer premiered, A24 debuted a single poster announcing the production’s imminent arrival. This teaser features none of the movie's notable actors. It also doesn't offer specific glimpses into the plot. Instead, the "Civil War" poster features two snipers poised at opposite ends of the Statue of Liberty 's torch. Sandbags dot the exterior of this torch. Everything on this poster exemplifies that this locale is now a go-to spot for soldiers rather than a tourist attraction. It's a striking image suggesting that no parts of America are off-limits in this national conflict. Everything can become a battleground.

Don’t you want to know what could lead to the chaos that resulted in the State of Liberty’s destruction?

This inaugural piece of "Civil War" marketing continues a long-running promotional trend for movie posters in distorting the Statue of Liberty. Over the years, decimating this iconic American landmark has become a go-to design motif for ominous movies involving cataclysmic circumstances. In the fictional universe of "Civil War," the titular conflict is something unprecedented. While the previous American Civil War had been split across two factions, the one in this film has divided the country into four different sectors, and this time they're duking it out with each other in large-scale battles with refined military firepower. Alex Garland 's dystopian hit is all about thrusting both its characters and the audience into a seemingly impossible American nightmare. The "Civil War" poster hinging on the distortion of the Statue of Liberty, though, is far less idiosyncratic.

Hollywood loves to destroy national monuments for the sake of eye-catching spectacle. Just look at 1950s creature features. These titles informed by the horrors of the Atomic Age featured recognizable American landmarks going up in smoke. A big octopus takes down the Golden Gate Bridge in 1955's "It Came from Beneath the Sea." A year later in "Earth vs. the Flying Saucers," the titular otherworldly invaders attack recognizable locales like the White House. These instances of spectacle tend to play on fears as relevant in 2024 as they were in 1954. Landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge and the White House have always been around. They’re seemingly eternal fixtures that only exist in America. If they can get wiped out, nobody or nowhere is safe.

That anxiety underpins the film industry’s love for blowing up and damaging big American landmarks. It also defines the trend of movie posters depicting the Statue of Liberty in disarray. One notable early example of this phenomenon is a pair of posters for 1981's sci-fi actioner "Escape from New York." Set in the distant future of 1997, "Escape from New York" takes place in a world where the America/Russia conflict has resulted in Manhattan becoming a massive unruly prison. When the President (Donald Pleasence) is taken hostage in this hideous domain, there's only one solution. To fight fearless criminals, you need one of your own. The unpredictable ex-Special Forces agent and federal prisoner Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is sent in to retrieve the President despite being the last guy anyone would think of as hero.

All of that mythology and story could be potentially difficult to communicate to moviegoers in a single image. Thus, the "Escape from New York" marketers leaned on skewing the Statue of Liberty to convey the movie's distinctive tone. One of these posters features a pair of handcuffs dangling from the arm of Lady Liberty . The other more famous poster shows the decapitated head of the statue looming in the background of a trio of humans (including Plissken) fleeing the city. Alternate posters for the film continued that theme.

Immediately, "Escape from New York's" posters suggest just how dire the world of this movie truly is. These striking visuals establish an ominous vibe that grabs your eye. However, they're also not throwing everything and the kitchen sink on the poster. Enough is left to the imagination to compel people to buy a ticket. Don’t you want to know what could lead to the chaos that resulted in the State of Liberty’s destruction?

In hindsight, these posters also suggest the cheeky anti-authority vibes of the film. "Escape from New York" is about rescuing the POTUS from the clutches of evil foes. However, neither protagonist Snake Plissken nor the movie has much respect for the President or any authority figures. Having the Statue of Liberty in shambles on the "New York" posters quietly revealed the feature's non-hagiographic approach to America. Nothing is sacred here. Not its leaders nor its monuments urging other countries to “give me your tired, your poor.”

A renaissance for disaster movies in the 1990s gave renewed urgency to posters depicting the Statue of Liberty or any American monument in tatters, with advancements in visual effects now making that possible. That included the White House getting blown up by alien invaders in "Independence Day" or Paris, France going up in smoke thanks to fragments of a massive asteroid in "Armageddon." The former movie even dedicated most of the back of its VHS case to an image of the State of Liberty in ruins. "Escape from New York's" poster lingered on the decapitated Statue of Liberty head to suggest a subversive ominous atmosphere. Now posters in that vein were decimating landmarks in the name of a blockbuster arms race. You couldn’t just promise spectacle to the viewer. You had to promise bigger spectacle than the last disaster movie.

We need your help to stay independent

This reasoning for this marketing fixation on the damaged Statue of Liberty endured into the 21st century. However, this is when it got amplified by unspeakably devastating real-world circumstances. The horrors of 9/11 made the destruction of seemingly indestructible New York City landmarks a very tangible prospect. Initially, Hollywood responded to this new status quo by removing reminders of 9/11 from their motion pictures. A "Spider-Man" teaser hinging on the Twin Towers was pulled from theaters. Fellow Sony/Columbia summer 2002 blockbuster "Men in Black II" reshot an entire climax that initially took place in this now-decimated location. However, eventually, Hollywood marketers returned to their old tricks. Not even a modern-day equivalent to Pearl Harbor could stop major studios from returning to the Statue of Liberty in ruins. In fact, posters for disaster movies like "The Day After Tomorrow" lingered on this monument's destruction. Now the promised ruin of the Statue of Liberty didn't signal a dystopian future; it grounded even the corniest disaster movies in something resembling reality.

Here, viewers see the aftermath of the Statue of Liberty getting its head torn off.

This was especially true with Matt Reeves' 2008 monster flick "Cloverfield." That movie's entire marketing campaign oriented around the Statue of Liberty's decimation by the beastie Clover. With the entire movie captured via found-footage, "Cloverfield" especially evoked the terror of experiencing a 9/11-adjacent event in real time. There is no explanation for what’s going on. Tidy exposition to clarify the horrors is absent. All that’s clear is massive landmarks are perishing and that you need to run. This realistic tone rooted in ambiguity and the destruction of New York City infiltrates "Cloverfield’s" poster .

Here, viewers see the aftermath of the Statue of Liberty getting its head torn off. It's a striking and haunting image instilling a pit in your stomach on how ordinary people can navigate such grand chaos. This also makes the "Cloverfield" poster a visual inverse of the "Escape from New York" poster. How fitting since that earlier piece of marketing actually inspired this "Cloverfield" image in the first place!

The ubiquity of these posters has continued into the post-2010 world. Subsequent Roland Emmerich movie "Independence Day: Resurgence" followed the practice. One of the many posters for this blockbuster features the Statue’s torch crumbling thanks to a lowering alien spacecraft. Meanwhile, even prestige TV got in on the act. "The Man in the High Castle's" debut poster, for example, features the Statue of Liberty performing the Sieg Heil salute . This creepy alteration instantly explains how this show occupies an alternate history in which the Nazis won World War II.

The enduring ubiquity of these kinds of posters isn’t just because of distinctly American post-9/11 anxieties. Global moviegoers also factor into these posters being so prominent decades after "Escape from New York’s" poster dropped. Mainstream big-budget movies and TV shows are often designed to be digestible to any viewer on the planet. Part of that is setting them in locations anyone can recognize, such as Los Angeles and New York City. There’s a similar rampant cognizance of big American landmarks.

However, the Statue of Liberty is particularly special in this regard. On paper, it’s supposed to symbolize the best attributes of America. A gift from the French, the sculpture holds a tablet inscribed with the date July 4, 1776 in Roman numerals, representing independence. A broken chain and shackle represents freedom from slavery. The lines, "Give me your tired, your poor/ Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," are inscribed on a plaque in the statue's museum. Here is a gigantic monument to the idea that anyone can come into this land of opportunity and find possibilities denied to them in their homeland.

That’s the kind of visual that promises something provocative and possibly in touch with the complexities of America as a country.

Of course, the reality of America is much more complex. It’s not a haven paradise , but, like many other superpower countries, susceptible to corruption, systemic rot and enacting colonial horrors on Indigenous people. The dissonance between the State of Liberty’s intent and the realities of America has always fascinated artists. A couple of the most striking shots of the original two "Godfather" movies, for instance, juxtaposes the brutalities of America in the foreground while the Statue of Liberty stands tall in the distant background. In these images, the realities and dreams of America inhabit the same frame.

Posters distorting the Statue of Liberty are a continuation of this tradition while also trodding on visuals that everyone around the world are conscious of. What better way to convey the ominous ambiance of your production than an image like the Statue of Liberty emitting a slithery tongue ? A promo for "The Strain's" third season takes it one step further:

That’s the kind of visual that promises something provocative and possibly in touch with the complexities of America as a country. Sure, such image build on a landmark that can be identified anywhere and everywhere. But they also speak to larger anxieties propelling the American public in different eras.

The Atomic Horror of the 1950s, the Cold War of the '80s, post-9/11 anxiety in the 2000s, the countless issues plagung America today . . . all of these woes have made Americans feel anxious about the very continued existence of this country. Movie marketing showing the Statue of Liberty getting distorted, including that " Civil War" poster, don’t just build on these fears. They also entice potential moviegoers with the promise of exploring those overwhelming anxieties in the relatively safe confines of a closed-off movie theater. Here, all the mayhem and political turmoil is confined to the silver screen.

Fact Sheet on FTC’s Proposed Final Noncompete Rule

The following outline provides a high-level overview of the FTC’s proposed final rule :

Specifically, the final rule provides that it is an unfair method of competition—and therefore a violation of Section 5 of the FTC Act—for employers to enter into noncompetes with workers after the effective date.
Fewer than 1% of workers are estimated to be senior executives under the final rule.
Specifically, the final rule defines the term “senior executive” to refer to workers earning more than $151,164 annually who are in a “policy-making position.”
Reduced health care costs: $74-$194 billion in reduced spending on physician services over the next decade.
New business formation: 2.7% increase in the rate of new firm formation, resulting in over 8,500 additional new businesses created each year.
This reflects an estimated increase of about 3,000 to 5,000 new patents in the first year noncompetes are banned, rising to about 30,000-53,000 in the tenth year.
This represents an estimated increase of 11-19% annually over a ten-year period.
The average worker’s earnings will rise an estimated extra $524 per year.
