I tested 5 AI resume builders to help get a job — here's what happened

Here’s how to apply for a job using AI

Man holding resume in front of a computer

I long for the day when I’ll wake up in the morning and get my AI ready to go to work for me . Until that time comes, the least AI could do for me today is to help me land a job I like.

Not everyone is a fan of resume and cover letters, but they remain staples in many recruitment processes.

For years, employers have also been using forms of AI to filter through these documents in order to narrow down the pool of applications they receive for any given vacancy.

The latest advances in generative AI mean that right now employees can leverage AI tools at their disposal to empower themselves in the job-hunting process.

I wanted to see how powerful these tools are. To find out, I created a shortlist of AI resume and cover letter builders that I wanted to try. Tom’s Guide believes in fair fights, so I used each of them as though I was applying for the same job with the same profile.

A target was required and I found a LinkedIn ad for a real job as a remote Software Engineer with generative AI responsibilities at Meta (formerly Facebook) that looked promising.

The role asked for a candidate with over two years of coding experience and over two years of building large-scale applications. More experience was required in designing and completing medium to large features without guidance. Meta was looking for a candidate with, or in the process of obtaining, a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or equivalent practical experience. In exchange, the company was offering a salary between $116k and $168k per year.

I created a fictitious aspiring Meta software engineer, Tamsin Smith, in order to have some kind of profile I could submit to the AI. Smith holds two Stanford University degrees in computing science, completed an internship with Twitter and has been working at Google as a software engineer since 2019.

If that’s not enough for Mark Zuckerberg to give her an offer, she also leads a local scouting group in her free time.

With an actual job ad and an alter ego in hand, I was ready to start reviewing AI tools. Read on to find out which tools I used, what they produced and my thoughts on their performance.

Resume created by Rezi.ai

My first attempt was with Rezi.ai since it offers a free basic service and I wanted to check if the way I designed the review could work in principle. And it did!

Right after confirming my email, I was creating Tamsin Smith’s first resume.

I was presented with a choice between a “Job-Tailored Resume” and a “General Purpose Resume”; I went with the first choice as it was exactly what this test was about. It asked me for the role and company I’m targeting but I was blindsided when Rezi asked me to insert a job application I’d written for the role. Isn’t this something the AI should be doing for me?

I finished this side quest and then added basic details like my name and email, followed by my previous work experience. Here’s when I first encountered signs of AI life in the form of a bullet point generator to further explain my role.

Rezi went on to ask me to add details on projects I’d worked on, my education history, certifications, coursework, involvement in other organizations, and my skills.

The next exciting step was the summary section, where I gladly let the AI take control. It was nothing I couldn’t have come up with myself if I simply wanted to summarize my resume, but it at least merits a pass mark. (I wanted to ask the AI to write a cover letter for me based on the finished resume but that feature requires a subscription.)

Overall Rezi marked the resume it produced at 87 out of 100, which I think is a bit too generous. If you have a rough idea of what you want your resume to look like, by all means, use Rezi so you don’t have to worry about the formatting. It might also provide a helpful AI-generated bullet point or two along the way.

If you were worried that not using Rezi’s AI was the one thing stopping you from getting your dream job, rest assured that (at least with its free version) this is not the case.

My score: 3/5

Resumaker.ai

Resume created by Resumaker

“Designed templates that will get you hired at the world's leading companies,” Resumaker proudly displayed on its homepage. I also had to pay ($0.99) to download my resume and cover letter. Surely, I was on the verge of getting Tamsin hired?

By now I’d gotten the hang of inserting details like my education and work history. In this regard, little separates the resume builders tested here.

The AI kicked in to provide me with text I could insert as accomplishments in my jobs and as the headline summary. The latter left much to be desired but at least it was presentable. Resumaker didn’t offer to beef up my volunteering section so I had to write that part manually. As a whole, the resume felt a bit dry but at least it was presentable.

However, it’s a good thing this service isn’t called Coverlettermaker. Every sentence it generated started with either an “I am” or “I have”. When you’re working with such a structure, there’s only so much you can do to make the rest more exciting. Furthermore, it left the [Company Name] field for me to fill in. AI that’s supposed to help me land a job in a highly competitive market should come with higher standards.

Resumaker.ai claims that thousands of applications it created landed people jobs. If there’s any truth to that, then on the bright side we really shouldn’t be overthinking what we’re sending to hiring managers.

Resume created by Teal

The main question I asked myself before deciding whether each AI builder deserved a pass mark was: Can I send out the résumé as is?

Teal didn’t quite make the cut here.

It asked me to connect the specific job I was applying for from LinkedIn to the resume and it started analyzing the job ad for keywords I should include. Fantastic! I was ready for a made-to-measure summary, past accomplishments, and cover letter — the areas where I wanted the AI to work its magic.

Unfortunately, this is where I felt let down. In the headline summary, Teal ended up giving me a compilation of the achievements it had previously generated but also prominently added that I had expertise in “work authorization”. The AI thought the right to work in the U.S. requirement from Meta’s job description was a hard skill.

It scored its own resume at 79%.

As far as its cover letter goes, I appreciated that I could generate it for free without having to spend time adding more details than I already had. However, the result was something I could have just as easily written myself.

My score: 2/5

Kickresume.com

Resume created by Kickresume

The last AI resume maker I wanted to test was Kickresume, which had the highest monthly fee out of the lot at $19 per month. You can bring that down by paying an annual lump sum that brings the pricing down to $9 a month or, as I did, utilize the free trial version.

Right when I was losing hope in the resume generators, Kickresume lifted my spirits.

Its helpful AI writer was alongside me from start to finish, offering handy suggestions for work accomplishments, explaining my certifications, and also suggesting skills I should list specifically for a software engineering position. I ended up with a clean-looking CV and I didn’t even have to break a sweat.

Kickresume gave the resume it generated a score of 88/100.

If I’m in a pinch and need a new resume that I don’t have to scan for AI-generated sentences that would land me in the "rejected" pile, Kickresume.com is the first website I’ll be visiting.

I wanted to add a nice cherry to the cake, so I asked Kickresume to create a cover letter using the great resume it made. But this is where I was underwhelmed.

While devoid of grammatical errors, I felt as though the AI didn’t take the résumé and job description I gave into consideration. It provided me with a few short lines that didn’t even name-drop Tamsin’s fictitious stints at Twitter and Google. You wouldn’t even know she completed two degrees at Stanford. Based on my positive experience with the résumé, I couldn’t believe this was the same AI content generator.

My score: 4/5

Resume created by ChatGPT

No subscriptions. No plugins. I wanted to see how well the free version of OpenAI ’s ChatGPT would do against the four dedicated AI resume and cover letter generators listed above.

I tweaked a prompt that I found online and, in 161 words, I asked the AI for a first draft of my new resume. I then asked the chatbot to refine its work based on the job description I gave it to make my resume less generic. In seconds, I had my second draft.

Since ChatGPT only gave me a plain text version of my resume, I then pasted what it gave me into a template from one of the previous builders.

I’m happy to announce that both myself and Tamsin were very pleased with the results. The resume easily rivals the ones generated from the other services I tested. I wouldn’t have minded some text to beef up the education section to explain what I had learned at Stanford. Also, the line pointing out that Meta was previously called Facebook is something I would never have included in a resume intended for Meta’s eyes. Other than that, ChatGPT gave me decent results in the shortest amount of time.

I was especially impressed with the cover letter I asked ChatGPT to craft for me. It was perhaps a bit too long for some tastes but it was arguably the most well-rounded out of the five.

Honorary score: 4/5

The verdict

There have already been reports of people using AI to write resumes and cover letters who ended up getting hired for the positions they’ve applied for, and I’m not surprised. But as this test has shown, a website’s claim that it uses AI to provide a service is not some kind of guarantee of the level of service you can expect.

Shop around when looking for AI resume and cover letter writers. Perhaps combine two or more of them to leverage each one’s specific strengths. But add the finishing touches yourself.

AI resume builder FAQs

What is an ai resume builder.

An AI resume builder is a tool that uses artificial intelligence to assist users in creating their resumes. These tools often have features like customized templates, content suggestions, optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS), custom tailoring, feedback, and revision options.

What features does Enhancv’s AI resume builder offer?

Enhancv offers a range of AI features to help you create your resume with ease:

  • Templates and customization: AI resume builders typically offer a variety of templates that users can choose from. These templates are designed to be both visually appealing and to meet the standards expected in different industries.
  • ChatGPT-powered resume content writing and suggestions: Enhancv suggests content based on your input. For example, after entering your job history, you will receive suggestions for expanding upon your professional accomplishments or skills that align with your experience.
  • Optimization for Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS): These systems are used by employers to screen resumes before they are seen by a human. Our builder suggests keywords and phrases that are likely to be favorable in these systems based on your job title.
  • Feedback and revision suggestions: we’ve got a resume checker that provides feedback on the overall quality of the resume, including suggestions for improving layout, grammar, and wording.

How do I use ChatGPT on my resume?

You can use ChatGPT on your resume for a range of activities, related to resume building, including:

  • Rewriting or writing from scratch difficult-to-write resume sections, such as your resume summary and job descriptions.
  • Making your resume bullet points more action and performance-oriented.
  • Suggesting skills and other keywords to include in your resume based on a job title.
  • Suggesting extra sections that can help you stand out from the crowd.
  • Using your resume as a starting point for an interview preparation mockup.
  • Using your resume as a base for writing your cover letter.

Can recruiters tell if my resume was written by ChatGPT?

As long as your application is customized with your job history and accomplishments, it’s unlikely that recruiters can tell if you used ChatGPT. ChatGPT can only help improve your resume writing, but lying on a resume is unacceptable.

Are resumes scanned by AI?

Resumes in some companies are scanned by an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) which may or may not have AI features. These systems parse resumes and match them with job descriptions. Enhancv’s resume templates are tested for ATS compatibility, though a 100% parsing rate is not guaranteed due to varying ATS models because the content of the resume is more important for ATS-friendliness than the template itself.

Enhancv Executive has changed my life: One week & four interviews later, I will be making 150% more doing the job I chose.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Resume Builders

Do you still have some questions? Check out the answers to the most common questions related to AI resume builders.

1. How can you effectively use an AI resume builder?

The best way to use AI to create your resume is to provide it with comprehensive information.

First, figure out exactly what’s in demand for the position you’re applying for. If you only give the resume builder a general idea of the role you’re aiming for, it’s going to give you a generalized resume.

The more details you provide about the exact job you want to apply for, the better. The AI will be able to focus on those particular areas and help you highlight your most relevant strengths and experiences.

Artificial Intelligence works best with well-structured data, so by inputting as much of it as necessary, you can get the most out of the AI resume builder.

So, add all your work experience, skills, details about your education , and anything else you think is relevant.

2. Can AI update my resume?

Yes, AI can be used to update your resume.

You can, for example, use an AI-powered resume builder to input your updated career information and then the AI will provide suggestions. The suggested changes may include optimizing the language on your resume, formatting the layout for more readability, or highlighting skills and experiences based on the job you want.

However, while AI can provide guidance, the final decision on everything is up to you. AI can’t fully understand the complexities of your personal experience and career objectives but it can make the resume-writing process a lot faster and easier.

3. Are there free AI resume builders?

While most AI resume builders include a paywall, some have a free version.

For example, Novorésumé offers a free version of the resume builder which can greatly help you create a compelling resume. The AI provides suggestions for improving your resume’s content and layout, as well as offers keywords based on your industry and professional background.

Give it a try for yourself!

And that’s our list of the best AI-powered resume builders!

Hopefully, now you’re familiar with the tools at your disposal and you’re ready to make the perfect resume with the help of AI and a user-friendly resume builder.

5 Tips for Using AI to Help You Write Your Resume

Share this article:

You’ve likely noticed that artificial intelligence technology has exploded in popularity. In early 2023 OpenAI chatbot ChatGPT set a record as the fastest-growing consumer application in history. In the summer of 2023, the app stated it had more than 100 million monthly active users, and it’s growing daily.

We can now use chatbot tools like ChatGPT for everything from writing essays to crafting poems and jokes. And, not surprisingly, the technology can also provide resume content, which means increasingly more job seekers are using the platform to build resumes and write cover letters.

The results have been positive. A ResumeBuilder.com survey of 1,000 job seekers found 70% of those who used ChatGPT reported a higher response rate from companies. More than three-quarters were granted an interview when using ChatGPT resume and application materials.

If you need to update your resume or write one from scratch, an AI resume generator can be a helpful tool that provides a starting point. This guide explains how to use AI to write resume content that can help you stand out in a job search.

1. Understand How AI Impacts Resume Writing

AI tools like ChatGPT use human-provided data to create human-like content. The technology that enables this is natural language processing.

Natural language processing combines rule-based modeling of human language with machine learning. As AI tools learn more about human language, they can quickly provide more accurate and human-like responses.

ChatGPT , for example, analyzes vast amounts of human-created data to respond to requests. ChatGPT uses Reinforcement Learning with Human Feedback (RLHF) to constantly refine and optimize the quality of its content.

When you use AI to generate a resume, you can input a position you’re applying for, and the tool will quickly generate the following:

  • Sample job titles you might have previously held, as well as typical job duties for those previous positions.
  • Keyword-focused content that’s likely to sync up with applicant tracking system preferences.
  • Relevant coursework and education that someone with a particular job title has likely completed.

With ChatGPT , you can “Send a message” to the app to “create a [position] resume.” Within seconds, the app will generate a resume that pertains to whatever position you state. It will also provide several customizable fields for you to add your personal identifying information. You can then copy and paste the content into a document or your own resume design template and modify it.

ChatGPT generates content from data from all over the web, as well as from feedback other AI users have provided to the tool. You likely won’t use an AI-generated resume word-for-word when you first generate it. However, you can use the same type of template to organize your resume content and gain inspiration.

2. Choose the Right AI Resume Builder

You have lots of options for what brand of AI tool you use when generating a resume. In addition to ChatGPT, there’s a plethora of resume-specific AI tools, like Rezi.ai . Some resources go as far as formatting content into attention-grabbing templates.

For example, when you link your Google profile to the tool Kickresume , it adds your Google profile photo to the actual resume template. You can download a colorful resume and easily swap out or add content in each of the template’s sections. However, a word of caution is to research which resume formats are best for jobs you’re applying for. Some companies adhere to nonbiased resume reviews and do not want to see applicants’ photos. Others use resume filtering systems that prefer very simple resume formats.

Some AI resume tools offer free content; others will charge a fee to download the resume results or a resume template. You can source AI results from various providers and combine the best content as you create your own resume.

If you’re considering using AI for showing your work background, research different providers and compare pricing, features, and user reviews. Many tools have freemium models that allow you to test basic features before paying for additional features.

3. Leverage AI for Keyword Optimization

Many employers today use technology to scan job applicants, which is another area where AI can help job seekers get noticed. An employer can customize an applicant tracking system to scan and filter resumes for specific keywords. This condenses the number of resumes hiring managers need to manually review as candidates move through the hiring process.

At least 99% of Fortune 500 companies use applicant tracking systems to filter resumes. Many other businesses are following suit to save time when hiring. Job seekers can use AI to identify the most popular keywords related to various job titles and include those on their own resumes.

One way to leverage AI for keyword optimization is to get a full AI-generated resume and then use similar content on a new resume.

You can also use ChatGPT to ask, “What keywords are associated with [position] jobs?” The AI tool will generate dozens of popular keywords. You can choose the ones that relate to your experience and include those throughout your resume.

4. Improve Your Resume with AI Insights

You can also use AI to improve your current resume. For example, you can paste existing resume content into ChatGPT with the command to “improve this resume’s content.” The app will generate a revised version of your old resume using keywords and resume data to suggest an improved version.

If you haven’t updated your resume in a year or more, you can use AI to see what type of formatting and presentation styles are most popular today. An AI tool can help you reorganize your existing content or get template ideas for refreshing your resume.

5. Follow AI-Generated Resume Best Practices

Even though AI is becoming more sophisticated, just like humans, it isn’t perfect. It’s also a red flag to employers when multiple candidates submit similar resumes.

If you use AI to write or improve your resume, follow these best practices:

  • Do not submit a copy-and-paste AI-generated resume. Many AI tools post disclaimers on their content for good reason. The content may contain spelling and grammar errors, as well as inaccuracies. Always edit an AI resume and check for issues that could dampen an employer’s impression of your application.
  • Personalize your AI-generated resume. Savvy hiring managers can tell when a resume has come straight out of an AI tool. Be sure to read through and edit the AI-generated content to make it your own. You can create resume sections such as a summary of your background or listing your unique achievements to add a personal touch that reflects your particular professional experience. Use numbers to quantify your accomplishments and add interesting details to personalize your resume.
  • Don’t use content suggestions that aren’t true. Just because AI suggests that you list certain experiences or skills, that doesn’t mean you should include them on your resume if they don’t accurately reflect your background. If an employer discovers you’ve submitted false information, they might quickly disqualify you from the hiring process.

AI is constantly learning and improving, which is excellent news for job seekers and those in need of a resume update. By adding your personal touch and AI-assisted keywords and formatting you’ll submit a strong resume that helps you stand out among other applicants to get the role you want.

Do's and don'ts for using AI to improve your resume

how to improve your resume using ai

will be looking for a new job . But ensuring their resume gets seen by a recruiter may take some high-tech editing in today's market.

use applicant tracking systems in their recruitment processes, which weed out resumes that aren't closely aligned with keywords and skills listed in job descriptions. Employees should take advantage of AI to potentially outsmart these bots, while also leveraging their skills and experience in the most effective way.

"A big point of frustration for job seekers is that they're not getting a positive response to their resumes, but one of the biggest mistakes is not tailoring your resume for each individual job to which you applied," says Keith Spencer, career expert at Flexjobs. "But there are some things you could do to tailor more effectively, and using AI as a job search assistant can be a game changer."

9 resume red flags that scare off recruiters

writing resumes and cover letters for them. However, the tool should be used as "an idea generator" to analyze job descriptions and streamline an applicant's experiences and skills.

"When you're reading something that's completely AI-generated, you can typically tell it's not a human that wrote it — it doesn't really sound natural and it lacks your personal touch," Spencer says. "What I like to use it for is an idea generator to help break through writer's block, or use it as a research assistant to analyze those job descriptions."

Spencer recommends experimenting with free tools to get a sense of where AI will be useful. To write an effective AI prompt, applicants should emphasize any key points AI should consider, and describe the key audience they hope to reach. Applicants can also input a cover letter into an AI generator so the resume is closely aligned there, too. Uploading a sample resume from a similar role can also give the AI guidelines to highlighting relevant metrics.

"AI can give you insights that you don't have — maybe I'm making a career change to a role I've never done before, but I have a lot of transferable skills that would make me well-qualified for it," Spencer says. "I could use an AI tool to provide me with a sample resume and use it as my own idea generator for things that I should be talking about."

49% of CEOs say AI could do the bulk of their work. What does it mean for the C-suite?

In his own experience, Spencer has used AI to craft a "master resume" based on his own skills, and then tailors each version to more closely match the job description. He also uses AI to help him craft a professional summary for the top of a resume to quickly capture a recruiter's attention with notable skills and experience that take into account the specific role descriptions.

"You want to understand your audience and convey information about yourself that's going to be relevant and impactful by mentioning skills or competencies that are mentioned in the job description," he says. "Continually assess what's working and what's not, what improvements you can make and what new strategies you can try."

A step-by-step guide to implementing AI at work

Applicants should still be careful to not rely too heavily on AI suggestions — often, AI will make up qualifications or skills an employee doesn't actually have or fabricate performance metrics. Applicants should review any content the AI creates to make sure it's accurate, and sounds personalized.

"Ask yourself, Does this sound like me? Would I write this way?" Spencer says. "And if you can't confidently say yes, then you should probably be changing quite a bit of it."

A career in HR was a far-off plan B, but became the best way to create value for both teams and clients.

Should You Use AI to Write Your Resume?

Most companies today use AI for recruitment — Applicant Tracking Systems screen and pre-select resumes before they even reach a human hiring decision-maker. It’s only fair to let job-seekers leverage the same technology and beat ATS bots at their own game.

Resume AI won’t write a resume for you. It does something far better — provide personalized feedback and highlight the exact areas for improvement. All that in an instant.

This way, you get immediate pointers for what to tweak — using your own words, without fear of sounding machine-like.

AI Resume Writer FAQ

While we’ve tried to make this tool as easy to use as possible, it’s okay to have questions. If you don’t find your answers here, contact our customer support.

What is Kickresume AI Resume Writer?

Kickresume AI Resume Writer is based on OpenAI’s GPT-3 neural network which is a powerful language model able to produce texts that are indistinguishable from texts written by human writers.

In other words, the AI Resume Writer does exactly what you’d think it would — automatically writes your resume.

  • All you have to do is enter your job title, click “Use AI Writer” and the AI will generate a number of bullet points for your work experience subsection.
  • If you don't like these bullet points, you can either edit them or delete them and click the button again.
  • If you like the bullet points but feel like that section is still too short, simply click the button again and the AI will add more phrases to it.

But naturally, since the text is written by AI and not you, you still need to tweak some details in the end. Nevertheless, it can still help you write your first draft.

Is the AI Resume Writer free?

Even with a free account, you get a limited number of uses. Every premium subscription (starting at $5/month) includes a substantially higher number of AI requests.

At the beginning of every billing period, credits are added to your account (whether it’s a month, three months, or a year).

GPT-3 is a paid tool and we have to pay Open-AI for every API request. We’re “buying” the use of their AI technology. Because of that, we had to put a limit on how many times you can use the AI Writer per month.

Kickresume’s AI Resume Writer is able to generate a work experience section based on a provided job title.

All you have to do is:

  • Sign up or log in to your Kickresume account. When logged in, on the dashboard scroll down to Your Documents and click on Create New.
  • When filling in the Work Experience section, enter your job title, click “ Use AI Writer ” and the AI will generate a number of bullet points for your work experience subsection.

Our AI Resume Builder is easy to use, generates unique resumes every time, and uses natural language indistinguishable from resumes written by human writers.

6 Ways You Can Improve Your Résumé that AI Can’t

A chatbot can pump out a document, but a human can make these upgrades to attract the interest of recruiters.

Not a day goes by without a new story about how AI will change everything for the better. It’ll make searching online easier. It’ll buy groceries for you when you’re about to run out. Now, AI will purportedly write the perfect résumé. It will speed up penning multiple résumés, in fact, along with cover letters, and it might even catch some typos (although it finds proper names challenging). One AI tool claims it can create a résumé in seconds that perfectly “fits your personal brand” , all for just $39.99.

But career coaches say there’s a lot AI can’t do—for example, figuring out which experiences to emphasize on a resume, and which to omit. “AI can’t really understand because they don’t know the candidate and their stories,” says Tiffinee Swanson , a career coach for Korn Ferry Advance . We looked up some perfectly human tricks that will not only spruce up your résumé, but also help you get past a potential employer’s own AI-backed candidate screener.

Use title tags.

Job screeners, whether they are human or virtual, look for keywords on a résumé that indicate the candidate knows not only what the job is, but also what skills are needed to excel in it. Experts say you can make it easy for the screeners—and do a better job than AI can—by highlighting certain elements at the top of your document in a way that you, the human, determine to be most attractive. These so-called “title tags” can immediately pique a recruiter’s interest, says Sarah E. Williams , a career coach at Korn Ferry Advance. “The average time a human recruiter spends on an individual résumé is three to five seconds, so using title tags can really help out,” she says.

Candidates should put title tags at the top of the document, just below their contact information. The first tag should specify the role the candidate is applying for; it should be in a slightly larger font size than the rest of the résumé (but slightly smaller than the font size used for your name). The second tag should refer to the most important competency for the job, while the third tag should refer to the next most important.

Add a professional profile.

A short—four sentences, tops—paragraph just after the title tags should be all a recruiter needs to know about whether you are a good candidate for an open position. The first sentence, Williams says, should describe who you are and what you offer—and do so in a personal style AI typically can’t match. The next sentence should highlight your three best skill sets. The third sentence should emphasize how you would go about becoming the organization’s go-to person. The final sentence should highlight your leadership style . Everyone has a leadership style, Williams says, even if they don’t have a leadership position.

Make every point achievement-oriented.

AIs are quite good at formatting all of your attributes and past job experiences and throwing them into a nicely designed document. But they’re not so great at determining which of your various experiences and accomplishments matter most to a prospective employer. “Making those individual stories accomplishment-oriented—using metrics, demonstrating outcomes—is also something AI simply won’t know about you,” Swanson says.

That takes some human thought. Instead of just laundry-listing your prior jobs and roles, she says, highlight the work you did to really add value to the organization. What actions saved the company a lot of time or money? What project did you finish that created a brand-new product or service? How did you get a team to work more effectively together? Once you start to read your résumé that way, you may delete some things and recast others, Williams says.

Embrace any gaps.

Most AI programs, when they see a time gap in a résumé, will just skip over it. But even if you’re not at a full-time job, you’re likely not twiddling your thumbs, Williams says. Candidates often use a layoff or voluntary time away to learn new skills, take professional-development courses, or volunteer. Any of these can appeal to a human recruiter. Showcasing your volunteer experience and the training you’ve taken to improve or upgrade skills, for instance, can help underscore your purpose, values, and ambition—all attractive post-pandemic traits for recruiters and organizations.

Promote a pivot.

The pandemic didn’t force AI to have to work from a different location, nor to rethink a business model or how it did its role. But the pandemic did compel humans to do all of those things, and plenty more. Potential employers want to feel confident that their new recruits will be able to thrive in an uncertain environment. On your résumé, highlight how you helped your organization or team to pivot during the pandemic. For instance, don’t just say you helped accelerate digital transformation or new-business development. Instead, discuss the process you helped to automate and any new products or territories you developed in order to increase revenue.

Practice the job interview.

Even if an AI program writes the perfect résumé, Williams says, that can only get you in the door. “AI is not going to help you with interview skills,” she says. So after spending time on your résumé, make sure to practice answering tough job -interview questions (as well as asking the interviewer smart ones ) and avoiding common interview mistakes . Then, be proactive in following up after the conversation. Those very human moves, not an AI-powered résumé builder, likely will determine whether you get a job offer or not.

Using AI in Your Job Search? Here’s How to Do It Ethically

Photo of hands typing on a laptop with a graphic of a an artificial intelligence chatbot interface overlaid on top.

  • April 9, 2024
  • Categories: AI and Automation , Candidates , Job Interview Preparation

If you use AI to help with your job search, is it cheating or being tech-savvy? As hiring managers figure out how to integrate emerging tools like AI into their hiring processes, candidates are using them to find, research, and interview for jobs. But distinguishing between leveraging technology and crossing ethical boundaries can be a challenge. Here’s how you can use AI tools ethically and effectively.

First, let’s define our terms. In this piece, when we talk about artificial intelligence (AI), generative AI (GenAI), and large language models (LLMs), we’re referring to technologies that can simulate human-like text responses. Before using tools like these to prepare materials for a job interview, check to see if the organization has any guidelines regarding AI and applying. If they prohibit it, don’t use it.

Be True to Yourself

Authenticity is key. Use these tools to put your best foot forward, not to misrepresent your skills. Being authentic not only helps you find the right fit but also demonstrates your integrity to potential employers. If you want a job that you’ll be happy in, you have to be real about your capabilities and goals. And that’s true whether you use AI or not.

Tip #1: Use AI to Hone Your Career Story

An essential start to your job search is determining the types of business situations you prefer, the problems you solve best, and where your skills can make the most significant impact. A large language model (like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, etc.) can act as a thought partner to help you create a compelling narrative about your career and apply that to a new role.

One strategy is to prompt the AI to “ask questions one at a time” until it has enough information to provide suggestions tailored to your skills and experience. Here are a couple of sample prompts:

  • Could you guide me through an assessment of my skills and job experience? I’m trying to articulate what I’m good at, how I’ve applied these skills in my career, and how they might apply to [new role at organization] . Ask questions one at a time about my skills, experience, and the new role until you have enough information to do this.
  • My background is in [field and functional area] , but I’m interested in moving into [field and functional area] . Can you help me explain how my skills are transferable? Ask me questions one at a time about my skills and background until you have enough information to do this.

The AI’s output can offer new ways of thinking about your career. From there, you can choose elements that ring the truest and incorporate them into how you talk about your work.

Tip #2: Use AI To Improve (Not Write) Your Resume

AI is great at sounding realistic and factual, even when it isn’t. While it may be tempting to use AI to write your resume for you, you’ll risk losing authenticity.

Instead, start with your own writing and use AI to check grammar and clarity. We use Grammarly and the review tools in Microsoft Word (yep, those are AI!). Grammarly can also provide suggestions for tone and engagement and check for plagiarism.

You can also use AI to analyze your resume relative to the job description. Upload your resume and the job posting to an LLM and prompt it to:

  • Identify areas where your skills and experience don’t align with the job posting.
  • Identify or suggest keywords that are relevant to your skills and the role.
  • Provide suggestions to connect your past achievements to the performance expectations of the new role.
  • Provide suggestions to match your language more closely to the job posting. For example, nonprofits often talk about growth in terms of mission impact, while for-profit companies often talk about revenue gains.

Prompt the AI to provide a bulleted list of suggestions, identify areas to improve, create a comparison chart, etc., rather than having it rewrite your work. Challenge its responses by prompting it to list any possibilities it may have overlooked. Tell it what you like and don’t like about the output and ask it to revise based on new data. (If you’re new to writing AI prompts, check out IBM’s Prompt Engineering for Everyone or Navigating Generative AI, a CEO Playbook . Both courses are available to audit or purchase on Coursera.)

If you choose to use any AI-generated text, make sure it accurately reflects your skills and experience and sounds like you. A fantastic AI-assisted resume is meaningless if you can’t authentically talk about and demonstrate everything during interviews.

Tip #3: Use AI to Prepare for Interviews

AI can help you brainstorm different ways an interviewer might ask about a particular skill. Try doing this with more than one platform. They each have different training models and will offer different types of insights. To make this useful and relevant to your skills and the specific job:

  • Conduct your own research about the organization (website, news articles, social media, etc.), including its mission or strategic plan, key initiatives, information about work culture, etc. Doing your own research ensures the information you are training the AI conversation with is factual and current.
  • Feed the AI that research, the job description, and your resume. You can also describe any concerns you have or why you are interested in the role. The more specific you are, the more tailored the output will be.
  • Prompt the AI to “act as a hiring manager” at the organization (you may want to also include their specific title) and generate a list of potential interview questions or even conduct a practice interview with you.
  • Ask the AI to assume different interviewer roles (e.g., board member or CEO) to help you think through how you might respond to various stakeholders during interviews.
  • Ask the AI to help you create a strategy for responding to common but difficult interview questions like “What are your weaknesses?” in a way that emphasizes your relevant skills and experience.

Remember, you aren’t using AI to create answers to interview questions. You’re using it to test your ability to think about the work through different lenses. From there, use the CAR (Context, Action, Result) or STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) method to develop your own authentic answers.

A note about privacy. When using publicly available large language models, even with a paid individual subscription and data controls, anything you upload has the potential to train the model. Don’t ever upload anything to an LLM that you aren’t comfortable sharing publicly. For example, you may want to exclude any contact information.

Tip #4: Think About Broader Impacts

This one isn’t a practical “how-to” for using AI to prep for your interview. It’s about using the widespread advancement of AI as a strategic framing. (In this case, the term AI refers to the array of technologies that can enhance service delivery for nonprofits and associations , not just text-based tools.)

AI is already reshaping jobs across industries and sectors. Talking about how it could impact an organization’s work on a larger scale can set you apart from other candidates, particularly for top leadership roles.

For example, if you’re interviewing for an executive director position at a nonprofit, you might discuss how AI could be used to analyze donor data and identify new fundraising opportunities, ultimately increasing the organization’s ability to deliver on its mission. You could also explore the potential downside of compromising intellectual property without proper safeguards and policies.

AI Should Enhance, Never Replace, Human Thinking

Staffing Advisors’ approach to AI in recruiting is simple: we use emerging tools to boost productivity and expand reach without diminishing the personal interaction and strategic decision-making required to make good hiring decisions. We never use it to evaluate or rank candidates in any way, ever. Humans do the thinking. Robots help us with everything else. ( Read more about our privacy and technology practices here. )

Our advice to candidates is in this same spirit: Use AI to enhance the presentation of your skills and abilities, not to do the thinking for you. The unique perspectives and experiences that drive your career are what hiring managers are looking for. There are a lot of things that AI tools can do. But they can’t replicate that.

How-To Guides

How to Take Your Photos From Okay to Great Using AI

With AI finding its way into nearly every photo editing app these days, it's easier than ever to achieve professional-looking photos.

Quick Links

  • Use AI Auto-Editing Sliders to Eliminate the Manual Work
  • Get Rid of Grain Using AI Denoise Features
  • Use AI to Resize Your Photos Without Compromising Quality
  • Correct Your Photo’s White Balance Automatically With AI
  • Easily Remove the Background With AI Background Removal
  • Replace and Remove Objects With AI Technology

Key Takeaways

  • AI can help you take your photography to the next level without requiring much skill.
  • Some AI tools are built into downloadable apps, but you can also use your web browser to access others.
  • Lightroom, Canva, and Pixelhunter are three examples of apps for which you can use AI to automatically adjust your images.

You can use artificial intelligence to take your photos to the next level with minimal effort. Today, we’ll discuss some of the best ways to make your images stand out without compromising quality, as well as various tools to make this happen.

1 Use AI Auto-Editing Sliders to Eliminate the Manual Work

One of the easiest ways to adjust your photos with AI is by using auto-editing sliders. These sliders will tweak multiple parts of your image, including saturation, vibrance, and clarity. Your platform’s AI analyzes how the picture looks after you’ve imported it from your camera and chooses the levels that it deems correct.

Besides editing colors and textures, auto-editing sliders also change the brightness of your picture. This is especially handy if you’ve accidentally overexposed or underexposed your images.

Sometimes, you’ll get an image you’re happy with as soon as your editing software has adjusted everything. But other times, you’ll need to manually tweak some of the sliders. In my experience, there have been times when the picture looked too saturated, compelling manual adjustments.

At the very least, using the auto-sliders is helpful for getting a baseline edit. If you’re new to photo editing software , it can also help you understand how each slider impacts your final result. Adobe Lightroom , Canva , Apple Photos , and Capture One all have auto-adjustment tools.

2 Get Rid of Grain Using AI Denoise Features

If you want to learn film photography or level up your skills, you’ll probably find that grain is useful for making your pictures look more retro. However, many photographers find additional grain in their images annoying—it can distract viewers from the main subject in the photo.

Ideally, you’ll have minimal grain as you capture the image. However, not every photoshoot will go that smoothly. Smartphone images are prone to grain, and you may sometimes need a higher ISO to compensate for a lack of light.

Fortunately, a handful of photo editing apps now have AI-powered denoise features, including Fotor and Lightroom. See our guide on how to use the AI Denoise feature in Lightroom .

3 Use AI to Resize Your Photos Without Compromising Quality

Sharing your creations with others is one of photography’s great joys, but it can be time-consuming to adjust all of your images’ dimensions for social media. You’ve probably experienced that annoying moment when you upload a picture to Instagram, but it’s not in one of the required dimensions and looks like it was taken on a potato.

Photo editing tools simplify resizing your pictures for social media. But thanks to AI, you can resize your images for different platforms without looking up the exact dimensions you need to use.

When resizing pictures for social media, Pixelhunter is the easiest free tool to use. Here’s how to resize your photos:

  • You can also select all the ones you like and hit Download all to save them in a zipped folder on your device.

4 Correct Your Photo’s White Balance Automatically With AI

White balance is one of the last things that’ll cross your mind if you’re a casual photographer. Even as someone who’s been practicing this craft for over six years, I only got to grips with how white balance works about four years in (and to be honest, I still get it wrong sometimes).

You’ll notice that your white balance is off if the picture is too blue or yellow for your liking, but it’s very easy to adjust this using AI. Lightroom, for example, has an auto white balance feature that will swiftly change the tint and temperature. To use this feature:

  • Click on the WB tab to expand the dropdown menu.
  • Select Auto when you see the list of options.

Again, you’ll sometimes need to adjust the sliders a little more to get the optimal result, but it’s much easier than manually fixing everything from scratch. If you’re a newbie, see our full guide on what white balance in photography is to learn more.

5 Easily Remove the Background With AI Background Removal

You might want to remove backgrounds from your pictures for several reasons. Sometimes, there might be something in the background that looks unappealing. In other cases, you may want to replace the background with something completely different (or use a color fill instead).

Several editing platforms use AI to detect the background in an image and remove it automatically. Canva is one example, but you need to be a Pro subscriber. Adobe Express is another tool you can use; just select your picture and hit Remove Background in the left panel.

Here are the fastest ways to remove a background from an image if you want a quick and simple solution.

6 Replace and Remove Objects With AI Technology

Sometimes, you’ll take a great photo but notice an unwanted object in the composition, like a street sign or trash can. If cropping doesn’t work, you can use AI to replace and remove objects.

There are several download-free ways to remove objects from your pictures online , such as Fotor and Picsart . If you’re an Android user, you can use Magic Eraser to delete things from your photos .

Another AI-powered option is Photoroom . All you have to do is select an AI tool, drag and drop your picture, make your selection, and let the app do the rest. Above, I’m using the AI Retouch option. None of these tools are 100% perfect, and you’ll sometimes notice discrepancies—so it’s worth trying them all to see what works best for you.

AI is a handy tool for taking your photos to the next level, even if you aren’t a professional photographer. You can quickly remove objects and automatically adjust multiple parts of your image, and this technology is also ideal if you want to make your pictures look clearer. You should now have the tools you need to step up your photography game; all that’s left for you to do is try them out!
