Good morning everyone present over here today. I feel honored to be selected to give a speech on pollution. In this speech, I will try my best to explain to you all what pollution is, its effects, and how it can be controlled. 

Pollution is the presence of harmful contaminants in the natural environment that cause harm and damage and leads to adverse changes. Before blaming someone else for the pollution let us as a generation self analyze ourselves. There is no one, in particular, we can blame for the increase in pollution except humankind. We, humans, are responsible for the exponential increase of pollution in the environment. Throughout centuries as our civilization progressed and found new ways to earn, learn and develop we have exploited mother nature in a bigger way. The harmful substances and the effluents released into the atmosphere by the factories, industries, and household waste have made an impact in contaminating the environment.

As we all know there are three kinds of pollution and those are air, water, and soil pollution. Air pollution is mostly caused due to the presence of harmful substances and contaminants in the air. These harmful gasses are released by vehicles, dust, dirt, and poisonous gasses from the manufacturing factories. The use of vehicles or the products made at factories may make our lives easy but it also has caused a lot of effects on the environment. The harmful gasses released from vehicles and factories cause a lot of respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, etc. The harmful pollutants in the air can cause the ozone layer to deplete which leads to the ultraviolet rays entering the earth’s atmosphere which can cause serious health problems, even cancer. Radioactive pollution is a product of air pollution that has a serious effect on living organisms. Some of the harmful effects of Radioactive pollution are skin cancer, burning of the skin, etc.

Water pollution is caused when toxic substances get mixed in water bodies such as rivers, lakes, and oceans. The toxic substances could be chemical fertilizers from the agricultural field or the poisonous Industrial waste, sewage water. marine dumping etc. This waste generated from different sources is directly drained into the large water bodies which get mixed in the drinking water and causes water pollution. The toxics that get mixed with water bodies have bacteria, germs, etc that can be life-threatening to all living organisms. Due to water pollution, the amount of drinking water is reducing every day which is causing a lot of problems for everyone.  Similarly, soil pollution is the contamination of the soil with toxic pollutants. The toxic substances could be the chemicals present in fertilizers, pesticides, and industrial chemicals.

Though we receive the benefits of using the products from industries knowingly and unknowingly we are the reason for exploiting the earth. We overuse the resources provided by mother nature and then are so careless to not think about the future. One example of overuse of the resources of nature is the use of fertilizers to increase the production of crops. Though there is an increase in the production of crops due to fertilizers it has also become the reason for land and water pollution due to the presence of the chemicals in the fertilizers. We can also give the example of Industries to get us products that ease our life but the toxic gasses released from the factories are destroying the Earth. 

So how can we correct things? how can we make sure that we don’t exploit nature?. As a community, it is our sole responsibility to fight against pollution by using eco-friendly things instead of using the non-biodegradable substances. Pollution of any kind cannot be eliminated completely but it can be controlled. We can overcome pollution by taking small measures in our day-to-day lives. We should be aware of small preventive measures that could help in controlling pollution. Do not throw domestic waste near the water bodies, instead throw the garbage at the garbage disposal site. Avoid using vehicles as it causes pollution. Carpooling and bike pooling are the best methods of reducing the usage of many vehicles, electric cars and bikes could be used instead of the vehicles which run on petrol and diesel.

To conclude this speech I want to say that every kind of pollution has a negative impact on the environment, animals and human lives. We as humans should take important steps for a better future. A lot of innocent lives are put in danger because of pollution so we should take part in an initiative to fight and control this problem. Together we can control pollution. Thank you for listening.

Good morning to everyone present here today. I am honored to be here and to be given the opportunity to speak about the rising problem of our generation which has been a concern for many for over a decade, that is pollution. Pollution is the contamination of the environment by the introduction of harmful pollutants in it. Pollution has three types which are air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution. We all know what these types of pollutants are and the pollutants that cause it so  I will keep the speech short and not take much of anyone’s time. Thus I will not go into a detailed explanation about all the types of pollution and their effects because by this time I assume everyone knows about it.

In this speech on pollution, I will talk about our responsibility to save the environment and how we can save the future. Firstly I want to make it clear that pollution of any type cannot be completely eliminated but it can be controlled. It is our responsibility to take small steps to control pollution such as not throwing domestic waste near water bodies such as rivers, lakes, etc. Domestic waste is considered to be the major reason for water pollution so it is your sole responsibility to take care of the domestic waste. Throw it to the nearest garbage disposal site. Secondly, it is very important to use electric vehicles instead of the usual ones which consume petrol and diesel. Carpooling and bike pooling options could be considered to reduce the use of vehicles which will, in turn, reduce air pollution. All parents should educate children about pollution and its effect on the environment. This step is very important as it creates a sense of care and awareness in the mind of children to take care of the environment. It is high time to take any action and put a ban on the usage of a different carcinogenic compound such as polymers. To conclude I want to say that it is our responsibility to control the pollution and save the future or else we all are going to pay for it. Thank you for listening.

പരിസ്ഥിതി മലിനീകരണം എന്ന മഹാവിപത്ത് :  ലോകമെമ്പാടും ചർച്ചചെയ്യപ്പെടുന്ന ഒരു വിഷയമാണ് മലിനീകരണം. സാധാരണക്കാരൻപോലും ഇതിനെക്കുറിച്ച് സംസാരിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയി രിക്കുന്നു. ഈ പ്രശ്നത്തിന്റെ ഗൗരവം ലോകജനതയിലാകെ ഒരു ഉണർവ്വ് ഉണ്ടാക്കിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. യൂറോപ്യൻ രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ രാഷ്ട്രീയപാർട്ടി കൾപോലും ഇതൊരു ജീവൽപ്രശ്നമായി പരിഗണിച്ച് പ്രവർത്തിക്കുന്നു. അടുത്തകാലത്തു നടന്ന ഗൾഫ് യുദ്ധം ഈ വിഷയത്തിലേക്കു ലോക ത്തിന്റെ ശ്രദ്ധ കൂടുതൽ കേന്ദ്രീകരിച്ചു. ഗൾഫ് യുദ്ധകാലത്ത് ഇറാക്ക് പേർഷ്യൻ കടലിടുക്കിന്റെ ഉപരിതലം ക്രൂഡോയിൽ പമ്പു ചെയ്ത നിറച്ചത് വാർത്തയായിരുന്നു. ഇത് വൻതോതിലുള്ള സമുദ്ര മലിനീക രണത്തിനും കടലിലെ ജീവികളുടെ നാശത്തിനും കാരണമായി. ഇത് ഇറാൻപോലുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങളിൽ കറുത്തമഴ പെയ്യുന്നതിനു കാരണമായി. അതിലുമുപരി സൗദി അറേബ്യപോലുള്ള രാജ്യങ്ങളിലെ കുടിവെള്ള സ്രോതസ്സുകൾക്കു ഭീഷണിയാവുകയും ചെയ്തു. 

ജലമലിനീകരണത്തിന് ഒരു യുദ്ധത്തിന്റെ ആവശ്യമില്ല. അത് നിരന്തരം തുടർന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. ഫാക്ടറികളിൽനിന്നുമുള്ള വിഷ ലിപ്തമായ മലിനജലം നദികളിലേക്കാണ് ഒഴുക്കിവിടുന്നത്. നമ്മുടെ ആറുകളും നദികളും ഇന്ന് വിഷലിപ്തമാണ്. വിശുദ്ധനദികൾ പലതും അഴുക്കുചാലുകളായി മാറിക്കഴിഞ്ഞു. കേരളത്തിലെ കല്ലടയാറിന്റെ കഥ പ്രസിദ്ധമാണല്ലോ. പുനലൂർ പേപ്പർ മില്ലിൽനിന്നുമുള്ള മലിനജലം കൊണ്ട് അത് വിഷമയമായി. ചാലിയാർ മറ്റൊരു ഉദാഹരണമാണ്.

അന്തരീക്ഷവും മലിനീകരിക്കപ്പെട്ടുകഴിഞ്ഞു. ഫാക്ടറികളിൽ നിന്നും മോട്ടോർ വാഹനങ്ങളിൽനിന്നും പുറത്തേക്കു തള്ളുന്ന വിഷ മയമായ വാതകങ്ങളാൽ പ്രാണവായുപോലും മലീമസമാണ്. തന്മൂലം ശ്വാസകോശരോഗങ്ങൾ വർധിക്കുകയാണ്. വിവിധ പ്രവർത്തനങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ട് ഉത്പാദിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്ന പൊടിപടലംമൂലം അന്തരീക്ഷവായുവും മലിനമാണ്. ഇതെല്ലാം മുനഷ്യരാശിക്കു കടുത്ത ആരോഗ്യപ്രശ്നങ്ങ ളാണ് സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്നത്.

ശബ്ദമലിനീകരണമാണ് മറ്റൊരു വിഷയം. സൂപ്പർസോണിക് വിമാ നങ്ങളുടെയും പോർവിമാനങ്ങളുടെ കീഴെയാണ് ലോകം. ഉച്ചഭാഷി ണികൾ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുന്ന ബഹളവും ഒരു പ്രശ്നമാണ്. വാഹനങ്ങളുടെ കാതടപ്പിക്കുന്ന ഹോണുകൾകൊണ്ടു നമ്മുടെ പാതകൾ മുഖരിതമാ യിരിക്കുന്നു. ശബ്ദമലിനീകരണം നമ്മുടെ കേൾവിശക്തിയെ തകർ ക്കുന്നു. തീവ്രതയുള്ള ശബ്ദതരംഗങ്ങൾ ഗർഭസ്ഥശിശുക്കളുടെ ഭാവി തന്നെ അപകടത്തിലാക്കുന്നു.

വനനശീകരണമാണ് മറ്റൊരു പരിസ്ഥിതിപ്രശ്നം. വനങ്ങൾക്കു കാലാവസ്ഥാനിയന്ത്രണത്തിൽ വലിയ പങ്കുണ്ട്. ഓരോ രാജ്യത്തിനും അവരുടെ രാജ്യവിസ്തൃതിക്കനുസരിച്ച് ഒരു നിശ്ചിതതോതിൽ വന മേഖലയുണ്ടായിരിക്കേണ്ടതാണ്. ഒരുകാലത്ത് കേരളത്തിന്റെ വന വിസ്തൃതി ഈ നിശ്ചിതപരിധിക്കും അപ്പുറമായിരുന്നു. ഇന്നു നമ്മുടെ വനമേഖലയുടെ ഏറിയകൂറും വെട്ടിവെളിപ്പിച്ചു കഴിഞ്ഞു. കേരളത്തിലെ തറവാടുകളിലെ മുമ്പുണ്ടായിരുന്ന കാവും കുളങ്ങളും ഈ ദീർഘവീക്ഷ ണത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു എന്നു മനസ്സിലാക്കാൻ നാം വൈകി പ്പോയി. വിശ്വാസമായിരുന്നു അവയുടെ നിലനില്പിന് ആധാരം. അന്ധ വിശ്വാസം എന്നും അനാചാരമെന്നും പറഞ്ഞ് കാവുകൾ വെട്ടിത്ത ളിച്ചപ്പോൾ നാം പുരോഗമനവാദികളായി. പരിസ്ഥിതിയെ പഠിക്കാൻ നമ്മുടെ പൂർവികർക്കു കോളജുകളോ വിദേശികളുടെ ഗവേഷണമോ വേണ്ടിയിരുന്നില്ല. അറിവില്ലാത്ത മനുഷ്യർ മരങ്ങൾക്കു വിളക്കുവച്ചു പൂജിച്ചു. അറിവുള്ളവർ അതു വെട്ടിനശിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. മനു ഷ്യന്റെ ആർത്തിയും ലാഭക്കൊതിയുമാണ് നമ്മുടെ വനങ്ങളുടെ നാശത്തിനു വഴിവച്ചത്. വനനശീകരണത്തിന് എതിരേ നമ്മുടെ സമൂ ഹവും സർക്കാരും ചില ഇടപെടലുകൾ നടത്തുന്നുണ്ട്. സാമൂഹിക വനവൽക്കരണവും മറ്റും അതിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. മാത്രമല്ല, കാവും കുള വും സംരക്ഷിക്കാൻ സർക്കാർ ഇപ്പോൾ ഉടമകൾക്കു ധനസഹായവും നല്കുന്നുണ്ട്.

ജലവും വായുവും മലിനീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നതുപോലെതന്നെ നമ്മുടെ മണ്ണും മലിനീകരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. രാസവളവും കീടനാശിനികളും അതിനു കാരണമാണ്. വർത്തമാനകാലത്ത് നാം നേരിടുന്ന മറ്റൊരു വെല്ലുവി ളിയാണ് ജൈവാവശിഷ്ടങ്ങളും പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക് ഉത്പന്നങ്ങളും ഉയർത്തുന്ന ഭീഷണി. നമ്മുടെ പാതയോരങ്ങൾ ഇന്നു ജൈവമാലിന്യങ്ങൾകൊണ്ടു നിറഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്നു. അറവുശാലകളിലെ അവശിഷ്ടങ്ങൾ നടുറോഡിൽ കൊണ്ടുത്തള്ളുകയാണ്. കക്കൂസ് മാലിന്യങ്ങളുടെ സംസ്കരണവും റോഡിൽതന്നെയാണ്.

അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിലെ കാർബൺ ഡൈ ഓക്സൈഡിന്റെ ക്രമാതീത മായ വർദ്ധനവ് അന്തരീക്ഷോഷ്മാവ് ദിനംപ്രതി വർദ്ധിക്കുന്നതിനു കാരണമാകുന്നു. പരിസ്ഥിതിക്കിണങ്ങാത്ത കെട്ടിടങ്ങളും പരിസര ങ്ങളും ഈ താപവർദ്ധനവിന് ആക്കം കൂട്ടുന്നു. ധ്രുവപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെ മഞ്ഞുമലകൾ ഉരുകിയില്ലാതാകുന്നത് ഈ താപനപ്രക്രിയയുടെ ഫല മാണ്. ഇത് ഉണ്ടാക്കുന്ന ജൈവനാശവും പാരിസ്ഥിതികപ്രശ്നവും വളരെ വലുതാണ്. സമുദ്രജലനിരപ്പ് ഉയരുന്നതിന് ഇത് ഇടയാക്കും. പട്ടണങ്ങൾ പലതും കടൽവെള്ളത്തിനടിയിലാകും.

സമുദ്രജലത്തിൽ രസത്തിന്റെയും എണ്ണപ്പാടയുടെ തോതും വർദ്ധി ക്കുന്നു. നമുക്ക് ഓക്സിജൻ നല്കുന്ന കടലിലെ സൂക്ഷ്മ സസ്യങ്ങ ളുടെ നാശം ഭാവിക്കൊരു ഭീഷണിയാണ്. ഫ്രിഡ്ജുകളും ഏ.സികളും ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതുമൂലം അന്തരീക്ഷത്തിന് ഉണ്ടാകുന്ന പ്രശ്നവും ഇന്നു സുവിദിതമാണ്.

പരിസ്ഥിതി മലിനീകരണത്തിനു പരിഹാരത്തിനായുള്ള ആവശ്യം ചിലർ അസംബന്ധമായി കാണുന്നു. ഇത് ഏതെങ്കിലും ഒരു രാഷ്ട്ര ത്തെക്കൊണ്ടുമാത്രം സാധിക്കാവുന്ന കാര്യമല്ല. രാജ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് അതി രുകൾ ഉള്ളൂ. മനുഷ്യന്റെ നിയമങ്ങളും വ്യവസ്ഥകളുമാണ് കരയ്ക്കും കടലിനും അകാശത്തിനും അതിരുകൾ തീർക്കുന്നത്. വായുവും കടലും ആകാശവും അതിരുകളില്ലാതെ കിടക്കുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ട് ഏതെങ്കിലുമൊരു രാജ്യം തങ്ങളുടെ അതിർത്തിയിൽ വച്ചു നടത്തുന്ന പരിസ്ഥിതി ദ്രോഹം പ്രപഞ്ചതാളത്തെ പൊതുവായി ബാധിക്കില്ലെന്നു കരുതരുത്. ആയതിനാൽ ഈ വിഷയത്തിൽ ലോകരാഷ്ട്രങ്ങളുടെ മുഴുവൻ പങ്കാളിത്തവും ശ്രമവും വേണ്ടതുണ്ട്.

വൻകിടവ്യവസായങ്ങളുടെ സംഭാവനയാണ് പരിസ്ഥിതി മലിനീക രണത്തിലെ ഏറിയ പങ്കും. നമ്മുടെ രാഷ്ട്രപിതാവായ ഗാന്ധിജി ഈ അപകടം ദീർഘവീക്ഷണത്തോടെ കണ്ടിരുന്നു. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് അദ്ദേഹം വൻകിടവ്യവസായങ്ങളെ എതിർക്കുകയും ചെറുകിട സംരംഭ ങ്ങൾക്കായി വാദിച്ചതും. ഗാന്ധിജി ഭയപ്പെട്ടത് ഇന്ന് യാഥാർത്ഥ്യമായി രിക്കുന്നു. വൻകിടവ്യവസായങ്ങൾ ഭൗതികമായ നേട്ടങ്ങൾ ഉണ്ടാക്കി യിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും അതിന്റെയെല്ലാം മീതെ ജീവന്റെ നിലനില്പിനുവേണ്ടി നാം കനത്തവില നൽകിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുകയാണ്.

നല്ല പരിസ്ഥിതിയില്ലാതെ ജീവജാലങ്ങൾക്കു നിലനില്പില്ല. നല്ല വായുവും ജലവും കൂടാതെ മനുഷ്യനു ജീവിക്കാൻ ആവുമോ? മനു ഷ്യരില്ലാത്ത ലോകത്ത് എന്തു പുരോഗതി? എന്തു വ്യവസായം? എന്തി നാണു രാഷ്ട്രങ്ങൾ? പരിസ്ഥിതി മലിനീകരണം മനുഷ്യന്റെ ശവക്കു ഴിയാണു തോണ്ടുന്നത്. ഇതു മനസ്സിലാക്കി പ്രവർത്തിക്കാൻ വൈകു ന്നത് ഈ ഹരിതഭൂമിയെ മരുപ്പറമ്പാക്കാനേ സഹായിക്കൂ.

Tory candidate for London mayor has Trumpian attitude to climate, says Khan

London mayor expected to criticise Susan Hall in speech launching solar panels on school roofs

Sadiq Khan will accuse his Conservative rival in the race to be London’s next mayor of being “Trumpian” over the climate crisis, as he announces plans for solar panels on schools.

Khan is expected to acknowledge resistance to his expansion of the ultra-low emission zone (Ulez) in a speech on Friday but insist that he still intends to “go further”.

A fund will be established for putting solar panels on school roofs and Khan said he will meet a commitment to make London net zero by 2030.

He will contrast his plans to that of the Conservative candidate Susan Hall , a London assembly member, who has called for the UK government to delay its 2050 net zero target.

“London is at a crucial crossroads moment,” Khan is expected to say. “Susan Hall is a proud anti-green candidate who takes a Trumpian approach to the climate crisis.

“She has opposed all the green policies we’ve introduced since 2016, backed the reintroduction of fracking and promoted climate science denial online. So I want to make a plea to all Londoners who care about tackling air pollution and our precious environment to take this election seriously.

“You only have to look at what the Tories have done filling our waterways with sewage to see what they would do to air quality in the capital.”

In a nod to the heavy criticism, including that of his own party leader, Keir Starmer , over his expansion of the £12.50 charge to cover polluting vehicles anywhere in Greater London, Khan will note the “resistance and pressure from many quarters”.

But he will insist “it was the right thing to do and has proven to be very effective” with roadside nitrogen dioxide pollution cut in half across the city.

“I’m determined to go even further with a new 10-point climate action plan for our city, which includes exciting new initiatives like putting solar panels on school roofs across our city”, Khan will say.

In response Hall’s campaign team claimed that Khan, who is seeking an historic third term as mayor, was planning a “pay-per-mile” scheme for drivers in London, something he has denied.

A Hall spokesperson said: “Susan believes in a fair and practical transition to net zero, while Sadiq Khan believes in hitting motorists in the pocket with Ulez and pay-per-mile taxes. Susan will scrap Sadiq Khan’s Ulez expansion and pay-per-mile plans on her first day as mayor.”

When questioned about pay-per-mile scheme last September, Khan told the London assembly : “I want to be crystal clear. A pay-per-mile scheme is not on the table and not on my agenda.”

Khan will appear alongside the shadow energy secretary, Ed Miliband, at a school in north London to announce an initial investment of £2m for solar panels to be installed at 50 schools across the capital. There are more than 2,700 state schools in the capital.

He will also pledge that London’s bus fleet will “zero-emission” by 2030 while delivering 40,000 new public bike parking spaces and 23,000 more electric vehicle charging points across London.

Last July, Hall shared a Daily Express article by David Frost, the former Brexit negotiator who has been a rallying figure for rightwing Conservatives , in which he argued that the UK should “drop [its] urgent dash to net zero”.
