## Year 5 Multiplication & Division - Problem-Solving Investigations

These in-depth maths investigations are open-ended problem solving activities for Year 5 children. **In-depth Investigation: Prime Differences** Children find out if prime numbers become less frequent as we consider sets of larger numbers. **In-depth Investigation: Excellent Eights** Children explore patterns when multiplying numbers with consecutive digits by 8. The PowerPoint can be used to guide your class through this investigation. **In-depth Investigation: LCM Squares** Children use trial and improvement to find the smallest possible total on a square of lowest common multiples. **In-depth Investigation: Division Remainder Patterns** Children look at patterns of remainders in 4-digit numbers when dividing by numbers 3 to 6. Can they establish a rule? **In-depth Investigation: What an Odd Thing!** Children create a triangle of odd numbers and identify patterns when rows are summed or their end numbers are averaged. **In-depth Investigation: Remainder Runners** Children divide 1234, 2345, 3456 by 3, 4, 5 … 12 and look for patterns in the remainders. **In-depth Investigation: Reverse Digits, Same Product** Children find the product of a pair of 2-digit numbers then reverse the digits of both numbers and find an identical product. These investigations will develop maths meta-skills, support open-ended questioning and logical reasoning, and enable children to learn to think mathematically and articulate mathematical ideas. These problem-solving investigations come from our [Year 5 Maths Blocks](https://www.hamilton-trust.org.uk/maths/year-5-maths/). ## #Lesson1UsingKnownFacts

The first lesson in this series will help your class hone their mental skills as they solve a variety of calculations mentally using known multiplication and division facts. including multiplying and dividing by powers of 10, and multiplying by 9, 11, 50 and 25. The slides recap some of the handy methods they can employ to calculate mentally. There are then some games for their independent learning that will encourage rapid recall of multiplication and division facts.

## What's included:

• Lesson plan
• Activity ideas
• Calculation chains sheet
• Differentiated game boards
• Differentiated Top Trump cards

## #Lesson2TheMethod

Starting with comparing the chunking and short division methods, this lesson goes on to recap how the short division method works. They can practise short division independently yet in a group activity, or solve some missing number problems.

• Calculation cards
• Points cards
• Differentiated missing number challenges

## #Lesson3DivisionProblems

Now that your class have had a chance to practise the short division method, they can have a go at using it in the context of word problems. How tall is Emma?’ The questions become increasingly challenging and there is also the chance to find out some celebrity heights too!

• Differentiated challenge cards
• Celebrity height cards
• Character cards

## #Lesson5MultiStepProblems

This challenging lesson asks your class to solve a variety of multi-step word problems drawing on their knowledge of short division and other methods. The questions involve all four operations and children are challenged to think carefully about each step of the problem-solving process as they go through each question. There is also the opportunity for children to create some word problems of their own based on a given multi-step calculation.

## Let customers speak for us

Super content matched to our school’s knowledge progression maps. I liked the embedded videos and QR code opportunities to view sources independently on tablets. I think the choice to buy individual lessons could be made clearer on the website. I liked the option to only buy the history content. The planning considered requirements of the NC eg thinking like historians and handling sources. Great unit of work. Thank you!

Attractive , good quality resources.

Thanks, Kate!

Great RE unit really helped to be able to download a ready made unit. Was running out of ideas for RE and this was just what I needed. Saves lots of time too.

We're so pleased to hear that our resources have saved you time, Hazel! Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review :-)
