Biographical book / from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, dear wikiwand ai, let's keep it short by simply answering these key questions:.

Can you list the top facts and stats about Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood's Bad Boy?

Summarize this article for a 10 year old

Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood's Bad Boy is a biography by Yasser Usman , detailing the life and career of the Indian film actor Sanjay Dutt . Usman began writing the book in 2017 after meeting Dutt to talk about the latter's life and career. He spent eighteen months interviewing people who were close to him, including several of his school friends and teachers at The Lawrence School, Sanawar , police officers and co-inmates when he was jailed, as well as politicians, filmmakers, and co-stars. Book Review: Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy

Yasser Usman has written a couple of very interesting books around Bollywood bigwigs in the past. Rajesh Khanna: The Untold Story of India's First Superstar made for an excellent read whereas Rekha: The Untold Story was spicy, as was expected out of it. Hence, the moment I realized that he has authored Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy, I was super excited. After all, a lot has been said, written and heard about Sanjay Dutt during last four decades and hence a book around him was meant to be an insightful (and shall I add, entertaining) read as well.

sanjay dutt biography book name

The first surprise though was to see the book span just around 200 odd pages. How can the life story of a person like Sanjay Dutt get encapsulated in just 200 pages? Agreed that this is not an official biography of the actor, who by the way has already expressed his displeasure around the book been written for him. Still, I expected lot more to be up there on the platter to relish and cherish, even before I started turning over the pages.

As it turned out though, the book makes for an easy and comfortable read right through its length. However, except for a few stray incidents, anecdotes or episodes, there isn't much insightful about the actor that you actually get to read. Forget getting into the depth of what really happened, the reading material actually turns out to be totally one sided as you see and hear things primarily (and strictly) from the point of view of the author.

Of course that was expected as well since Sanjay Dutt hasn't officially come on board for the book. However, one would have expected that quite a few people around him would actually speak up about the life and times of Sanjay Dutt during all these years. Yes, Mahesh Bhatt's voice is heard here and there, and also a few named and unnamed sources do share their point of views as well. However, by and large the book is made up of written material that is already available in the public domain and hence what it does is primarily stitch it all together to give it a cohesive spin.

In that aspect one has to acknowledge Yasser Usman for making this book a very easy read. The build-up is fine, the setup is good, the situations are reasonably well explained, the narrative is intact and certain moments hold your attention well too. He must indeed have had a job in hand to go through all the material available at his disposal and then also hunt for more to dig deeper down. At many places he succeeds well too and that is what makes you wrap up the book in one go.

No wonder, you get to read a lot about Sanjay Dutt's troubled childhood, his stint with drugs, his many girlfriends, his marriages, his tryst with the underworld, his arrest and then subsequent release and then of course his movies. However, and this is where one wishes that there was a lot more to offer in this book, there isn't much in the book that you don't know or haven't heard of. Of course the dates and the names and the places and the timelines bring on added authenticity which should keep an average reader's interest alive. However for those who follow Bollywood religiously, there could have been more depth.

Nonetheless, the good part is that the book makes for a quick-fire read and hence you can wrap it up in a couple of hours. However for added insights straight from the horse's mouth, I would rather wait for an official biography to be out soon.

“Sanjay Dutt was the original Bollywood bad boy” reveals his biographer

By Shahnaz Siganporia

Image may contain Human Person and Face

Yasser Usman's most recent biography, Sanjay Dutt: The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood's Bad Boy, is basically summed up in its title. It delves into the actor's tumultuous life, spanning everything from losing his mother to cancer even as he spiralled further into his drug addiction, to his women and overt chauvinism, and of course, the long trial over his alleged involvement in the Mumbai Blasts case.

But more importantly, it tells the story of an actor who in a career spanning 35 years, and 100 films, with a barely 10 per cent success rate, established a fan following that included millions. They usually comprised packs of aspiring alpha men steeped in a terribly regressive idea of machoism, his “bad boy” image directly feeding into his fame. “It was as if no matter what he did, no matter how serious his misdemeanours, his fans retained a soft spot for this ‘bin maa ka bachcha [motherless child]',” says Usman. In quick one on one with Usman, he tells me how the quintessential bad boy turned MunnaBhai, survived and even, thrived:

Why Sanjay Dutt? Why now? Can you think of a life more epically Bollywood than his? This is the third part of my trilogy of exploring the other side of the lives of immensely popular stars. It was Rajesh Khanna's loneliness in my first book, Rekha's fight against the sexist industry in my second and finally my attempt to tell Sanjay's story—the good, the bad and, at times, the disastrously absurd. A life that is sometimes difficult to comprehend, full of moments of insanity, often stranger than any fiction. His is a spectacular story, it had to be told.

Through the book, there seems to be this understanding of Sanjay Dutt not so much as the bad boy, but more the foolish boy who got himself into big trouble—this seems to be a narrative that the media, the cops, his friends and even family go by. How do you decode this reductive sort of image? Sanjay was the original bad boy of Bollywood—in fact before there was Salman Khan, there was Sanjay Dutt. He is, in a sense, the template, the pioneer; others have followed in his footsteps. He was perhaps the only star in the Hindi film industry to have become synonymous with drugs, guns, leather jackets, rippling muscles, long hair, drinking, smoking and partying.

The Jupiter-Uranus conjunction is about to occur for the first time in 83 years. What does it mean for you?

In fact, when he was arrested for his alleged involvement in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts, the common narrative in the film industry and in a large part of media was to project him as “foolish”, “stupid” and “naïve”. I strongly debunk this theory. Sanjay told the police he acquired the deadly AK-56 and ammunition to for the “safety” of his family from the rioters. In my book it becomes clear that he already had three licensed arms and one unlicensed gun before he willingly acquired the AK56, for which he was later incarcerated. He was uncontrollably, repeatedly “bad”. Also, what makes a bad boy is not some commonly foolishness. You have to be astoundingly foolish for that.

Apart from all his other many misdemeanours, there's also an inherent and often worrying chauvinism to Dutt. How do you understand the "Sanjay Dutt effect"? Of course he is a chauvinist and that is explored in this book in detail. He never wanted his women to work in his films and he was consistent in his approach towards them: “I have nothing against the notion that my wife works as long as she has her own company or her boutique and is her own boss. But I would not want my wife to be an actress…I would not like to come home in the evening and find out that she has gone to a night turn…if you just want to call me a Chauvi (chauvinist), I'm just one.”

But I also question why he was such a huge star for decades? What was the connect? When I set out to write this book, I wanted to try and explain what makes a bad boy bad. I looked everywhere: I explored Sanjay's childhood for clues—his boarding school days, his relationships with his mother, father and sisters, his early years in the film industry. But there are some things you just can't explain. I can't rationalise this bad boy. He just is one. Or maybe the answer was always staring us in the face: in the final analysis, Sanjay seems like the boy who never grew up after his mother's tragic death. I think he is a quintessential MunnaBhai.

What was the one thing about him that completely shocked you? As a keen observer of Bollywood, I was shocked how our perception of Sanjay Dutt shaped post 1993. How it defined him. But it was shocking to know that the signs were always there. How many people know, for instance, that almost a decade before the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case, Sanjay was involved in a shooting spree in posh Pali Hill for which he was even arrested?

You seem to have struck a winning formula—looking at the stars who were around before the PR machinery came in and polished up the image—the unofficial biography through this archive of old interviews, along with other sources of public record. My books connect with the readers because they are not PR pieces. My attempt has always been a journalist exercise to document the star lives as a whole story. The research is long and tedious. People often ask me, what is “untold” in my books. They usually say, “but don't we know this story?” The untold in my books does not lie just in revealing the lesser known details. The “untold” here lies in seeing all of it together as a whole: the chances, the fate, the unpredictable, the conflicts, the trials, the tribulations, the triumphs and the learnings—that gave us the star as we know him. It is also a sincere effort to humanise the enigma.

Edited excerpts from a new biography of the headline-grabbing hindi film actor..

How sensational interviews and photo shoots fuelled Sanjay Dutt’s bad-boy image

If Amitabh Bachchan was the Angry Young Man of Bollywood, Sanjay Dutt was Deadly Dutt , a moniker he had earned thanks to the way he led his colourful life both on-screen and off-screen.

The myth of Sanjay Dutt was practically a creation of the film media of the ’80s and ’90s—especially Stardust magazine. ‘Deadly Dutt’, an inspired title, caught on, and in several interviews the star admitted to keeping up with the ‘bad boy image’ because the audiences loved it. Whenever he did photo shoots, he was seen with a cigarette in his mouth. Even though, in his time, he was working alongside stars such as Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and later Ajay Devgn, for a long time, his Prince of Darkness crown was uncontested. In his prime, he was giving the media everything that no other actor would dare to provide—a rollicking ride into his universe of drugs, booze, women, bikes and controversies. He was every film and tabloid journalist’s wet dream come true. Film magazines loved to play up his follies, his failings and his vices, and wrote creatively about his conflicted character, his emotional turmoils and his tumultuous relationships. Everyone, from drivers and security guards to neighbours and disgruntled former employees and lovers, were quoted in articles that perpetuated this rockstardom. Glossy pages were the perfect arena for Sanjay Dutt himself to rant against his father or his family to launch a blistering attack on the ‘bewafa’ (disloyal) film industry.

sanjay dutt biography book name

Film writing was in a different realm at that time. Journalists, especially senior ones, had unhindered access to the sanctum sanctorum of the stars they followed and wrote about. The more powerful ones could launch careers and even destroy them with just a headline, a photo caption or a whisper campaign.

In those analog days, when stars did not have well-oiled PR machineries or the weapon of social media to craft their public personas at will, they relied on friendly journalists to further their cause, fight their battles and sometimes reach out to their fans. They were willing to share their truths, their emotions and their problems, and it was a perfect ecosystem of barter.

For instance, when Sanjay Dutt was arrested for the first time, the family went into a huddle. With his future still uncertain, and the AK-56 scandal looming, the family found themselves standing rather alone and plunged into despair. They waited in vain for someone from the film industry—the same film industry that had once put Nargis and Sunil Dutt on a pedestal—to come, to be with them, to show support. But none of the heavyweights or vocal ones dared to show up—except Feroze Khan, Raj Babbar, Akbar Khan, Yash Johar, Anil Kapoor and Raj ‘Daddu’ Sippy. The family was practically ostracized. At this critical moment, a senior film journalist from Stardust was reportedly present with the family, as they bared their hearts. Kumar Gaurav, who was married to Sanjay Dutt’s sister Namrata, expressed his disillusionment and a sense of being betrayed. ‘There is no support from the industry and we have realized that’, he confessed. ‘I am not surprised with their attitude. Out there, people just want to play it safe. Nobody cares for anybody. We have come to terms with the fact that we don’t have any friends. And what friendship are we talking about here? People swing when the wind is stronger. Believe me, tomorrow when things are cleared up, they will all come along and say—oh, Sanjay, we were always with you. That’s their mentality. But at least now, we won’t get fooled. We have come to see through all of them.’

sanjay dutt biography book name

Nonetheless, when Sanjay Dutt came out of the first prison term, he tried hard to prove his detractors wrong. Disillusioned perhaps with the same media fraternity, he snapped when asked about his physical and mental health, having survived his first brush with prison term. He also used the same film media platform to send out a message to the film fraternity—to the section of the people who had decided to boycott him till he had been absolved of all his crimes.

When asked if he was disillusioned as not many people visited him in jail, he shrugged and said, ‘Who did, yaar? No one did. The few who did got to see me very briefly and so I feel that no one has a right to pass judgment on people who claim that I was on the brink of insanity or that I have become a raving raging lunatic. I don’t give anybody that right. And one lesson I have learnt in life is that you have to protect yourself, and I am going all out to do that.’ Had he become bitter with the entire experience? He replied, ‘Not bitter—I would say more aware. I believe in certain people, I believe in Balasaheb Thackeray and his convictions, I believe in my father, in Shatru saab, Dilip saab, Afzal. I haven’t really lost faith in people but yes, I have become more cautious in believing people.’ ( Stardust )

Sanjay Dutt Biography: What Makes a Bad Boy Truly Bad

Sanjay dutt’s biographer examines why the star doesn’t give a damn about what you think.

Sanjay Dutt; The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy; Yasser Usman; Rs 499, 225pp; Juggernaut

Close your eyes and think of a Bollywood A-lister. Any A-list actor will do. Now imagine, one evening, sitting in his home, the actor, aching from a recent breakup and mind dulled by alcohol – and perhaps certain other substances – decides to take a gun and shoot mindlessly in the air. He shatters a few windows of his mansion in a posh Mumbai neighbourhood and also the windscreen of his imported car. The neighbours, alarmed by the loud gunshots, call the police. But before the police can seize the actor, he runs off, only to resurface and surrender the next day. His weapon’s licence is confiscated and his passport impounded. The police register a case against him for rash and negligent use of a firearm that could cause harm to human lives. The filmstar is arrested and then let out on a bail.

What would you imagine the next steps of said celebrity would be?

In order to deal with so enormous a public-relations disaster, the actor may express contrition. He could become an evangelist against alcohol and drug abuse, and for gun control. Or he could go the other route and find a pliant servant to pin the blame on and scrub his reputation clean. But not Sanjay Dutt. One evening in 1982, Sanju Baba went on exactly such a shooting spree after breaking up with Tina Munim, now Ambani. Though this episode has now been all but forgotten it created a media frenzy back then. Film weekly Screen India carried a story titled ‘Look, Sanjay’s Shooting’ with all the gory details. Another film magazine reported how ‘Sanju went berserk when papa was away.’ But instead of expressing regret, Sanjay doubled down. This was his badass quip: ‘How does it affect anyone if I target practice in the premises of my bungalow?’

This is what makes Sanjay a true bad boy: One, not only is he bad, he’s unashamedly bad -- he certainly doesn’t care what you think of him.

Two, he’s uncontrollably bad -- when a reporter asked his father, the noted actor and politician Sunil Dutt, about the incident, he seemed powerless and resigned. ‘He is a hunter … I don’t know what kind of a gun Sanju has. He buys what he wants. How do you expect me to know everything that he has.’ (Indeed, Sanjay’s love for guns is legendary. At one time he owned three licensed firearms: a bolt-action Bruno .270 rifle for hunting animals like the nilgai, deer, sambar and others that weigh less than 100 kilograms, a .375 Holland & Holland Magnum double-barrel rifle for larger animals such as the tiger and elephant, and a shotgun.)

And, three, he’s an original, the template that has spawned a long lineage – from Salman Khan to countless men around the country who wear leather jackets and have Saajan-style haircuts.

Early in his career the legend of Sanjay Dutt was sealed by the crazy and improbable stories about him doing the rounds. Said his make-up man Manoj, who worked with him during his initial few films, ‘Which ordinary man cuts the neck of a monitor lizard (ghorpad) and drinks its blood and then jogs for one hour to sweat out the toxic effect only because Shakti Kapoor challenged him to do so?’ Manoj also talked about an incident when Sanjay ‘slit his entire forearm with a bottle’ because he was ‘high’. When the doctor arrived to sew him up, Sanjay tried to do it himself – without anaesthesia!

But the quality that makes Sanjay a truly rare bird in Bollywood is his unhesitating honesty and forthrightness about his badassery. He’s been very forthcoming, for instance, about his addictions: ‘Whatever drugs there are in the book, I’ve done it. But I preferred cocaine and heroin. You sniff cocaine, you smoke heroin, you can inject it.’ Indeed, his doctors at rehab in the US were surprised that Sanjay was still alive given the extent of his addictions. ‘There was a doctor there who gave me a list of drugs and told me: “Just tick the ones you have done.” Toh maine woh list dekha aur bola [I saw the list and said]: “Yaar, yeh toh sab tick karna padega! [I’m going to have to tick them all],”’ Sanjay later recalled jocularly. Sanjay was similarly open about once having smuggled heroin into the United States.

Sanjay’s recklessness worked overtime when he was in ‘love’. Like the time he rushed into a crowd of onlookers and caught a man making obscene gestures at his then girlfriend and co-star Tina Munim. Sanjay proceeded to tear away all the man’s clothes and pulled him into his van, where he tied him up in the nude for an hour. ‘I was a wild guy,’ Sanjay proudly said. ‘In fact at the slightest provocation I did things like taking out a sword. I hit a lot of people.’

Sanjay made no bones about the fact that he was a possessive, interfering partner. He once said, ‘I have never interfered in my girlfriend’s career, except in the matter of her clothes. I am very possessive about her. She is mine and I don’t like her to expose herself on screen.’ About his new wife Richa Sharma, whom he disallowed from continuing a career in films, he once said, ‘She’s waiting for me with food, so I love that. It’s a great feeling to know that someone is waiting for you at home’.

Many years later when Sanjay was asked if he was ever in two relationships at the same time, he responded provocatively, ‘I was in three relationships at one point of time.’ When asked, how did he manage this feat, he said, ‘You need to be clever... one shouldn’t know what is happening with the other.’

Which other Bollywood star can you imagine saying things like this? Whatever else you may blame Sanjay for, he’s never been politically correct or hidden his true beliefs under layers of diplomacy. Perhaps no one other than Rishi Kapoor, another old timer – though even he has never admitted things remotely as controversial as Sanjay -- is as open and honest as Sanju Baba. Indeed, today at the slightest whiff of ugliness and scandal, the PR machineries of Bollywood star’s kick in with assassin-like efficiency. Images are brushed up, photo-ops are staged, and dramatic re-brandings ensue.

Watch: Sanjay Dutt’s biography! In conversation with Yasser Usman, author of Sanjay Dutt; The Crazy Untold Story of Bollywood’s Bad Boy

Take for instance the prominence of Salman Khan’s Being Human charity after his image took a beating post his numerous legal troubles, including a hit and run case. Or the images of happy domesticity starring Hrithik Roshan and his family in the immediate aftermath of his ugly public spat with Kangana Ranaut. These can’t be coincidences, can they?

Yasser Usman (Courtesy Juggernaut)

Even as late as 2017, well into Bollywood’s PR age, when asked which actress he would like to marry, Sanjay Dutt said ‘I would like to marry Madhuri Dixit.’ It’s hard to think of another star who would so willingly dredge up a ghost from their past, a ghost that, according to some reports, is being whitewashed out of a film on Sanjay’s life that’s due to release later this year. In an image-obsessed Bollywood Sanjay stands out as a straight-shooter. And in a PR controlled Bollywood there simply will never be another Sanjay Dutt, a bad boy who isn’t afraid of what you think of him, of saying what he means and meaning what he says.

Sanjay Dutt Career

The first movie Sanjay Dutt was in was Reshma and Shera (1979); he was only 12 years old. In 1981, Sanjay’s first movie role was in Rocky, directed by his father, Sunil Dutt. The parents were excited for the movie to come out, but Sanjay’s mother, Nargis, died of cancer before the opening.

The death of Sanjay’s mother broke him, even though the film was a huge hit. The news shocked him. It is said that he became hooked on drugs after his mother died. On the other hand, Sanjay’s childish behaviour had drawn attention to himself.

Due to his drug abuse, his father, Sunil Dutt, sent him to a drug rehab centre in the United States. Because of this, his Bollywood image was also hurt. After making a few movies, Dutt’s first big hit was “Naam,” which came out in 1986.

After that, he was in several well-known movies throughout his career. He was caught in April 1993, just three weeks before Khalnayak was freed, because he was linked to the explosions in Mumbai that year.

But in 2003, Rajkumar Hirani’s Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. changed Sanjay Dutt’s look again. After the success of this movie, he was in Parineeta and Zinda, which were also big hits at the box office.

Also, his next film, Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), made him a big star. People liked how he played the lead role in the 2012 movie Agneepath. In 2017, he came back with the movie Bhoomi.

‘Sanju’ Review: Bollywood Biopic About One of Its Biggest Stars Takes Dangerous Liberties With History

Bollywood stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Shah Rukh Khan may have the legendary careers and staggering worldwide fame, but there’s good reason why — of all the living actors that could have been the subject of a Bollywood biopic — it’s Sanjay Dutt who emerged as a viable choice, in the newly released “ Sanju .” The son of iconic Mother India actress Nargis and actor/activist/politician Sunil Dutt (whose 30-year career in films has been overshadowed by substance abuse problems, womanizing, accusations of terrorism, and prison stints), Sanjay’s life includes tragedy, drama, crime, and redemption in spades—in short, it’s the stuff movies are made of.

Given Sanjay’s highly publicized missteps, writer-director Rajkumar Hirani and co-writer Abhijat Joshi seem well aware that it would be foolish to unabashedly glorify Bollywood’s “bad boy;” in fact, in the very first scene of “Sanju,” an incensed Sanjay (played with uncanny accuracy by Ranbir Kapoor) burns a book by a biographer who likens him to Gandhi. Soon afterwards, his wife Manyata (Dia Mirza) assures him that they will find a writer to tell his story honestly. “Bad choices make good stories,” she says, “and you are the king of bad choices.” When biographer Winnie Dias (Anushka Sharma) is skeptical to come on board, she is quickly convinced of his commitment to the “truths”—warts and all—when he unflinchingly reveals, in front of Manyata, that the number of women he has bedded hovers at 350, “not counting the prostitutes.”

It’s a strategic setup, presumably intended to persuade us that despite Dutt having practically tasked Hirani and Joshi to pen this screenplay, “Sanju” isn’t meant to be a hagiography. But while the film doesn’t hide the turbulent trajectory of Sanjay’s journey, it’s eventually clear that Manyata’s words are the only fleeting sign of acknowledgment that Sanjay bears any real responsibility for it.

As he recounts the drug-laced, alcohol-soaked, crime-tainted chapters of his past to Winnie, “Sanju” plays out like a highlight reel of his mistakes, but in a way that places the blame anywhere but on Sanjay himself. As Hirani presents it, Sanjay’s rampant addiction issues were triggered by grief over his mother’s illness and a strained relationship with his father, then fueled by his duplicitous dealer (Jim Sarbh). The illegal possession of weapons in connection to terrorist activity was the unfortunate result of sketchy advice and self-protection, and his dubious public reputation was the solely the work of the ruthless media.

The justifications are especially disappointing, coming from a filmmaker known for his ability to blend side-splitting comedy and moments of tear-jerking melodrama with straight-shooting commentary; from criticizing the questionable ethics of India’s health care system in his 2003 directorial debut “Munna Bhai M.B.B.S” (which, incidentally, starred Dutt himself) to taking on the problematic practice of idol worship in 2014’s PK, Hirani has built an exceptionally successful career of exposing institutional injustices and questioning social norms through funny, family-friendly fare.

But both the humor and the critique are too frequently misplaced here. In a dangerous, almost irresponsible choice given current global conversations around sexual harrassment, Hirani often makes light of Sanjay’s philandering behavior; the actor’s admission to the 300-plus sexual partners is met with chuckles from both Manyata and Winnie, and when he casually sleeps with the girlfriend of his best friend Kamlesh (Vicky Kaushal), the boys have a laugh over the prospect of Kamlesh doing the same in the future so that they’re “even.”

And while the film has a playful, almost forgiving, “Sanju will be Sanju” attitude towards his womanizing ways, it saves its (disproportionate) criticism for the press, which, if the film is to be believed, served as the biggest villain in this story for painting Sanjay as a terrorist. There’s even the mention of “fake news” at one point, and if there’s any doubt that the film holds the media responsible for almost all of Sanjay’s woes, it’s dispelled by a concluding musical number in which Kapoor, along with the real-life Dutt, dances to lyrics that slam headline-hungry journalists. Although the critique over sensationalist reports isn’t entirely unfounded, its legitimacy is considerably dampened by the absurdity of the song—not to mention the scantily clad female backup dancers.

Hirani’s signature quirk simply doesn’t translate well here, and the film’s cartoonish syntax only make the more emotional moments that Sanjay shares with his father or Kamlesh, both of whom serve as moral anchors throughout the narrative, appear confusing at best, melodramatic at worst.

But there’s still a beating heart at “Sanju”’s core, coming from the central character himself. Mastering Sanjay’s trademark stooped gait, adopting his distinct baritone, with prosthetic hooded eyes, Ranbir Kapoor’s physical transformation is nothing short of astounding, but even more impressive his embodiment of the troubled star’s entitlement, vulnerability, desperation, and despair through the film’s decades-spanning timeline.

While the film has moments that feel farcical, Kapoor steers clear of simplistic mimicry; whether it’s his rock-bottom moments with addiction or an especially heartbreaking scene in a jail cell, he has an ability to hit certain emotional beats well.   It’s almost a shame to think about what he could have made of the role, had a stronger screenplay allowed him more of an arc.

Instead, “Sanju” is a reminder that putting a subject on a pedestal isn’t a biopic’s only potential pitfall. Here, it becomes problematic by portraying Sanjay as a victim of his circumstances rather than the master of his own decisions. It may not be gloss over his transgressions, but it makes too many excuses for them, with few lessons learned in the process.

“Sanju” is now playing in limited release in the U.S.
