Korean Pop Music a Threat to Contemporary Filipino Identity? Globalization, Nation, and Interrogation in Philippine Culture and Identity
2021, Asia Review
For almost a decade, Korean Pop (K-pop) music has become a global phenomenon. Transgressing regional boundaries, K-pop music found extraordinary success in Southeast Asia, including the Philippines. Globalization of culture, however, had not only produced skeptics but also challenged the tenets of cultural identity vis-à-vis a crisis on nationalism. This paper seeks to theorize the adverse and favorable effects of K-pop music with regard to its significance to contemporary Filipino national identity through assessment of history, culture, and meaning. This paper tackles and examines its nuance to contradictions of culture and identity and how the transnationalism of pop culture, like K-pop music, contributes to the development of culture and society in the Philippines in recent history.

The rise of Korean Popular Culture in the Philippines has been observed by the Filipino community during the early 2000s. This paper offers a background information regarding the trend of the Filipino entertainment industry localizing Korean popular culture for the daily consumption of Filipino community. The paper also aims to provide different situations in where localization of different aspects of Korean popular culture received complementary and contrasting perceptions from different sectors of the Filipino community. The process of the K-Pop fandom becoming a subculture was also discussed in the paper and how the subculture reflects a national identity of the fans as a Filipino. By identifying the perception of Filipino community in the localization of Korean popular culture, we can create an educational discussion that will help the Filipino entertainment agencies and networks produce more engaging and enticing products of localizing Korean popular culture and alike. This will allow more internal communication and relations between Korean companies and Filipino companies that aims to satisfy the everyday consumption of Filipino community.

This article reflects on the constant negotiation between a critical conception of Asia and an internalization of the ‘Filipino’ construct in postcolonial Philippine contemporary music composition. With centre-periphery interactions governing the emergence of contemporary music in the region after World War II, the notion of ‘Asia’ became a crucial point of contention regarding its necessary distinction from the West. Envisioning an artistic and philosophical approach towards new music creation, the compositional praxes of Jose Maceda, Lucrecia Kasilag, Ramon Santos, and Jonas Baes highlight a need to examine traditional and pre-colonial modes of musical expression. In effect, a pan-Asian paradigm and a developing critique of Western modernism necessarily involved an intersectional approach between eth-nomusicology, music composition, and decolonization. This study contemplates the significance of this approach in today’s (post)-postmodernist aesthetic amidst increased globalization, along with positionalities within fluid intersections of identity, politics and culture.

With K-pop groups beginning to include non-Korean members, K-pop has become increasingly transnational and hybridized. All aspects of K-pop have now transcended Korea's national borders, from production to consumption and from performers' nationalities to their music and fashion styles. There have even been some intriguing experiments in creating K-pop groups composed mainly, or even entirely, of non-Korean/Asian members, such as EXP Edition, CoCo Avenue, and KAACHI. Interestingly, and perhaps predictably, these groups have faced vigorous pushback from K-pop fan communities and have generated heated controversy about the definition of K-pop. In this article, I interrogate the racial politics of K-pop by carefully examining international K-pop fans' reactions to and discourse about these three groups. By examining how fans' online engagement has challenged the conventions of K-pop with non-Asian performers, I advance the discussion of the racial dimension of the genre, which has received little attention in the current Korean Wave scholarship.
