STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF TELECOMMUNICATION TOWERS

Profile image of Mohammed Eltahir

In this thesis, a comprehensive structural analysis and design for a self-supported latticed telecommunication tower is being carried out using three different structural analysis softwares. The tower is 60 m in height with a base width of 8.55 m. The main objective of this project is to understand loads affecting telecommunication towers in the Sudan. Also, to understand structural issues that may occur to them in Sudan. This is why the data needed to complete this project has been gathered from local ministries and governmental authorities. For example, earthquake magnitude has been obtained from the Ministry of Minerals, technical specifications and conditions from Civil Aviation Authority, and Sudan’s weather data for the past 30 years has been from specialized websites. The tower is analyzed and designed using Bentley’s MStower software™ version 6.20.2.4. Specialized codes such as the American code TIA-222-G has been utilized extensively. The connections and plates are designed using several dedicated engineering and business professional’s IDEA Statica™ version 10.1.99.54266, while the foundation is designed using JSE&C’s AFES™ version 3. It has been found that Sudan doesn’t need seismic analysis because the magnitude and frequency of Earthquakes is very low. Also, from analysis and design it is recommended in the future to minimize detailing of panels and connections to the least possible number for ease of manufacturing and assembly by workmanship.

Large number of telecommunication towers has been constructed in Sri Lanka during last few decades with the rapid development of telecommunication sector in the country. These towers play a significant role especially in wireless communication and failure of such tower in a disaster like an earthquake is major concern mainly in two ways. One is the failure of communication facilities will become a major setback to carry out rescue operations during disaster while failure of tower will itself cause a considerable economic loss as well as damages to human life in most of the cases. Therefore, design of telecommunication towers considering all possible extreme conditions is of utmost importance and a good design can be considered as a step towards a greater degree of sustainability. However, almost all telecommunication towers in this country have not been checked for earthquake loading since most of people believe that earthquake threats are not that much of significance to Sri Lanka ...

Due to the boom in the telecommunication business, number of buildings carrying a roof top tower has been increased rapidly. Most of the building were not originally designed to carry a roof top tower, but later converted to carry roof top towers due to the changed requirements. In the present work an attempt has been made to study the behavior of buildings with roof top tower in the event of an Earth Quake using STAAD pro. A typical commercial building is considered for the analysis. Four towers with height 9m, 15m, 21m, and 27m is considered for the study. The building is analyzed by keeping these towers at four different locations at roof top to identify the most suitable location of the tower. A comparative seismic study between buildings with and without roof top towers is done .Study is carried out to identify the most vulnerable structural members and the relative location of such members in comparison with the tower location. The difference in the forces exerted on the structural members of the building when the tower mass is lumped roof top level and at tower joint is studied in order to find out whether lumping of the tower mass at the roof top will provide satisfactory design or not.

Due to increase in demand, huge number of telecommunication towers has been built in India during last few decades with the compulsion to provide efficient communication. Consequently, telecommunication sector in the country has expanded rapidly. Expanding base possesses challenges to mobile operators in terms of augmenting and upgrading infrastructure to uphold to excellence of services. A rapidly rising subscriber and a more rigorous band allocating organization may create a higher requirement of tower sites for operators to accommodate more subscribers. Hence it became an expensive and tedious task to spot ample land for construction of towers. This led to the extensive use of the rooftop of multi-storeyed buildings for installing communication towers. Formerly the majority of the buildings were not cautious to carry a roof top tower, however owing to the altered needs; buildings were rehabilitated to carry roof top towers. In this report analysis of 4 legged angular self-supporting telecommunication towers is performed. Assessment is done based on modal analysis, by comparing the results of roof top tower and ground based tower. In support of this intention, two 4 legged self-supporting telecommunication towers of 24m and 21m are modeled on roof top of a building and on the ground, considering the effects of wind loads as per Indian condition. Effects of wind on towers are employed from the IS 875 (Part 3)-1987 by using STAAD pro finite element software. The tower and building is analysed by placing towers at centre of roof. Axial forces experienced by the structures too have been obtained

Over the past 30 years, the growing demand for wireless and broadcast communication has spurred a dramatic increase in communication tower construction and maintenance. Failure of such structures is a major concern. In this paper a comparative analysis is being carried out for different heights of towers using different bracing patterns for Wind zones I to VI and Earthquake zones II to V of India. Gust factor method is used for wind load analysis, modal analysis and response spectrum analysis are used for earthquake loading. The results of displacement at the top of the towers and stresses in the bottom leg of the towers are compared.

This chapter gives a perspective on telephone networks, local area networks and computer communication networks. We define a number of technical terms pertinent to the understanding of the structure and operation of telephone and computer communication networks. A telecommunication network can be viewed as a communication network which consists of a transmission subnetwork, a switching subnetwork, and a signaling subnetwork. These three subnetworks interact and function in a specific and cooperative way to provide good quality of service for communications.

To simplify network operation and management, two types of hierarchical telephone networks, the AT & T and the ITU-T (or CCITT) networks, were established to serve all the countries in the world. Modern trends in telecommunications are to establish a universal communication network known as the broad band integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) which can handle voice, data, video and image traffic. The international standard for this network is named asynchronous transfer mode (ATM).

It is well known that the call arrival process to a telephone network is a Poisson process with a constant arrival rate and that the data traffic is bursty. However, the bursty nature of data traffic is not well understood and requires much research.

Important Components of Telecommunication

In general, the fundamental telecommunication model is made up of the following three significant components . In addition to these components, other entities may include improving the efficiency of the system which majorly depends on project needs.

  • Transmitter  – It collects the data and transforms it into analog / digital signals based on the requirement
  • Transmission medium  – It transmits the data/signal to the physical channel or wireless channel
  • Receiver  – It is the reversible process of the transmitter. It collects the signal from the transmission medium and transforms it back to the original data

If the telecommunication system uses a single dedicated channel among transmitter and receiver for data transmission then it is called point-to-point communication . Similarly, if the telecommunication system establishes communication channels among one transmitter and more low-powered receivers for radio communication, then it is called broadcast communication .

Further, if the telecommunications system uses a physical channel for more number transmitters and receivers for data sharing then it is called a multiplex system . Here, the multiplex signals are moved at nodes for the appropriate receiver (destination). Moreover, it has the main advantage of high-cost reduction for deployment . Below, we have given you the primary layers incorporated in telecommunication systems.

Layers for Telecommunication
