Why Chapman Essay

Students applying for admission to Chapman University must write one supplemental essay. The first three essay questions are based on why you chose the institution and your preferred major. This statement letter aims to let the admission officers know why you see this school as the best choice for you. The first and second essay is about why you chose your preferred Major.

You will have to explain your interest in that field of study and how the college can help you achieve your future aspirations. If you find it difficult to decide on the major to go for, this question will help you express yourself and how Chapman can help you.

Use this essay as an opportunity to explain yourself, your interest, passion, and character traits that reveal who you are, and your leadership skills, talent, or intellectual prowess that makes you the best candidate for the school.

Chapman University Supplemental Essay Prompts

It is widely known that Chapman offers one of the earnest supplemental questions, and students seeking admission into Chapman university are required to answer any of four supplemental questions of not more than 200 words. You can give each your best try using this guide

Prompt 1: Please tell us about your interest in the major you selected

This prompt allows you to express why you choose this Major among the school’s numerous options. Explain why you decided to embark on this journey, what prompted you, how it relates to your career goal, and how Chapman can help you achieve it.

Regardless of whether your reasons are for academic or professional reasons, your rationality should be based on what Chapman is offering. 200 words might seem too small for you to express yourself, but that should not hinder you from giving your best. Make sure your answer is detailed enough to capture your interest in that major and why the school is the best place for you to achieve your goal. Avoid copying other people’s work and be specific.

Prompt 2: For undecided pupils:

Our vibrant liberal arts program at Chapman University fosters intellectual curiosity. It’s fine if you’re not sure what you want to major in, but please tell us about the academic fields that interest you.

This essay topic is for applicants who have difficulty narrowing down their choices, and Chapman has offered a tool to assist them. This question aims to provide admissions personnel with a better understanding of why you are having trouble deciding. It’s also an opportunity to demonstrate your competence and strength and undertake a thorough study before responding to the issue. The major goal of this essay is to connect your interests with how the school can assist you in making the best selection possible.

Prompt 3: Why are you interested in Chapman above the thousands of other institutions and colleges?

This is an example of a common “why us” essay. This section is crucial and fascinating. You have only 200 words to describe why you have chosen Chapman. You have the opportunity to thoroughly illustrate how Chapman can assist you in achieving your academic goals.

Do not be brief; tell the admissions officers that you are passionate about the school; do your research and thoughtfully respond to the question, and express what you love about the school, the school attributes that interest you, and the school values that align with yours, as well as how Chapman can assist you. When writing this essay, focus on what you will give to the school and how your contribution will serve to improve the school’s cultural, political, religious, and social well-being. Make sure your essay goes beyond the basics of statistics and facts.

Prompt 4: Choose one of the two prompts provided below.

Student Identity - Each Chapman student has numerous identities that contribute to our community’s diversity. Our committee is interested in hearing about the intersectionality of your identities and how they have influenced your life.

The school wants to learn more about you in 200 words, including what has formed you into the person you are now, your experiences, beliefs, and perspectives. You can discuss your history, previous experience, what you believe in, how it relates to who you are today, and how your distinctiveness might benefit the school.

Student Impact - Growing or transforming your viewpoints is important for the Chapman student experience. What kind of influence do you want to make at Chapman, and what legacy do you leave behind?

In other words, Chapman is merely inquiring about your desire to be remembered. It’s simply a question of what you can provide to the school and how your personality will influence it. What do you enjoy doing? What have you accomplished that you are proud of?

Take a look at how you’ve influenced your present school to assist you to answer that question. This assignment allows you to write about any of your skill sets; it is not restricted to academics or grades; instead, write about a significant component of yourself or your talent and how it will benefit you and the Chapman community.

Chapman University History

The history of Chapman university began in 1861 during the era of Abraham Lincoln; the school was founded in Woodland, California, as Hesperian College. In 1934, the school was renamed Chapman College, fourteen years after the California Christian College acquired Hesperian College assets. In 1991, Chapman changed its name to Chapman University.

The institution was renamed after the chairman of the board of trustees and benefactor, Charles Clarke Chapman, the mayor of Fullerton, California. The school has been regarded sometimes as a Christian school due to its affiliation with religious organizations. Despite not being a Christian school, the school has had a cordial relationship with churches - The United Church of Christ since 2011 and Disciple's of Christ since the university was founded.

The research university encompasses ten schools and colleges, including Dodge College of Film and Media Arts, Schmid College of Science and Technology, Fowler School of Engineering, and Fowler School of Law. The private school has a reputation for being in high research activity, and it is classified among R2- Doctoral Universities.

Chapman University, situated on 90 acres of land, gives admission to students from the United States and foreign students. The school has a student capacity of 10,001 undergraduates and postgraduates with 1,117 academic staff and 752 administrative staff.

When you consider that Chapman University is one of the best private research universities, considering that the college is classified among universities with high research activity, thus classified R2, you might have a doubt when writing the essays. 2024-2025 supplemental essay prompts for college applications.

The 2024-2025 college application season has begun, and colleges and universities are releasing their supplemental essay prompts. Supplemental essays are responses to prompts from individual schools; these essays are different from the Common App’s Personal Statement in that your responses to supplements are only sent to the school that is requesting them. Word counts vary.

In your Personal Statement, it isn’t a good idea to mention any specific college, because that essay is sent to all the schools you apply to. In your supplements, however, it is advisable – and sometimes required – to state specific details about a particular school that interest you as a student.

As supplemental essay prompts are released, we’ll compile them here for your quick reference.

What Meal Would You Make for Our Admissions Staff?

One of the fun questions on our Common App Writing Supplement is what meal would you cook for the admissions staff. Well, Jessica K. decided to make the meal she listed on her Writing Supplement, which was penne arrabiata , and shared a photo of the meal with us on Twiiter. So thanks Chef Jessica (@Jkogzz) for sharing this delicious dish with us and thinking of the Chapman admissions office.

Now it’s your turn. Whether you’ve completed the Common App Writing Supplement or not, let us know what you would cook for our admissions staff (extra points for photos)?

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, supplemental essays confusion on common app.

So, I'm working on my college app and I keep hearing about supplemental essays that I need to write for specific colleges. How exactly do I find these on the Common App? A little bit stressed because I don't want to miss any and mess up my applications.

No worries! You've got this. On the Common App, after you’ve added the colleges you’re applying to, you’ll see a 'Writing Requirements' section for each school under 'My Colleges.' That's where you should find most supplemental essays or short-answer questions that each college requires, if any. Beware though, some schools might hide essay questions in other sections, for example putting an extracurricular prompt under the 'Activities' section or a why major prompt under 'Academics'. So, make sure to click through each section and fill out every detail because sometimes additional prompts will pop up depending on the information you fill in.

» How to Apply to Dodge College

Application details updated for 2025 cycle .

The information on this page has been updated for the 2025 application cycle (those applying to spring or fall 2025). To gain access to your Creative Supplement, you must first submit your application to Chapman University via the Common App.

Follow these steps to apply to Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University.

Step 1: Know your deadline

First, make sure you know your application deadline. That way you can apply on time.

Spring 2025

October 15, 2024 is the application deadline for first-year students and transfer students..

Note that transfer students cannot apply for a spring entry into BFA Film and Television Production or BFA Screen Acting. Transfer students must apply for a fall entry to these programs.

  • Early Action: Early Action is a way to apply to Chapman early. You will receive your decision earlier than if you were to apply for Regular Decision.
  • Early Decision: Early Decision is a way to apply to Chapman early. You will receive your decision earlier than if you were to apply for Regular Decision. Early Decision is binding . That means that if you are admitted, you must withdraw all other applications and attend Chapman.

Film and Television Production

  • Screen Acting (priority deadline)*
  • Writing for Film and Television (priority deadline)*
  • January 15, 2025 is the Regular Decision deadline for all programs except Film and Television Production, which has a November 1 Regular Decision deadline.
  • February 15, 2025 is the application deadline for transfer students.

* While we accept applications for Screen Acting and Writing for Film and Television up until the Regular Decision deadline, we recommend you apply by the priority deadline.

Step 2: Submit Your Common Application

Follow the Chapman application process to submit your Common Application.

You can’t move on to the next step until you have submitted your Common Application. Try to submit your Common Application as soon as possible so that you have time for Step 3 (Submit your Creative Supplement). Also, note that:

  • This letter would be in addition to the letter of recommendation required by the Office of Admission, so you would be submitting two letters total.
  • When applying to Film and Television Production, you will need to select an area of study . You can learn more about the areas of study, and classes associated with each, on our Film and Television Production Catalog page .

Step 3: Submit your Creative Supplement

All Dodge College applicants must submit a Creative Supplement. Your Creative Supplement is a showcase of experience and work that you’ve done related to that major.

  • You will submit your Creative Supplement on your Application Status Page. You can only access your Application Status Page after you have submitted your Common Application, so be sure to submit your Common Application as soon as possible.
  • You only have to submit a Creative Supplement for your first-choice major. If you include a second-choice major on your application, you don’t have to submit a Creative Supplement for it.
  • There may be essay prompts in the Creative Supplement that are similar to prompts in the Common Application. In this case, please make your answer unique to the Creative Supplement and related to the program you are applying to.
  • Part of our evaluation is how well you follow the prompts. Please do your best to follow the directions, including not going over the time limit for videos.
  • If you are having issues uploading materials, check out our Creative Supplement upload tips .

The requirements for the Creative Supplement are different for each major. Choose your major to view requirements:

Animation & Visual Effects

1. dodge college personal statement.

In 500 words or fewer, tell us what about your distinct experiences/background/values makes you a unique candidate for the program for which you are applying. Please focus on what makes you unique as a person beyond any direct experience you may have in your intended field of study. Use this prompt to talk about aspects of yourself that are not already covered in other parts of your application.

2. Creative Resume

Provide a resume highlighting 5-7 pieces of your best creative projects (1 page maximum).

These projects should demonstrate your ability to convey a story or message through creative, artistic or technical talents. As we are only asking for a limited number of projects, include more recent items and projects in which you were the driving force or had a leadership role. These can include class assignments, projects from jobs or internships, or your personal hobbies and freelance work.

Your resume should not contain the projects themselves. It is simply a written description of your projects.

Use this format to structure your resume:

Title: title of the project (length of project if applicable)

Reason for creating/Date of creation: You may write “freelance” if it was something you did on your own.

Description of item: An in-depth description of the piece, the inspiration or objective, and your specific role in its creation. Also list any awards or special recognition you may have received for the piece.

Creative Resume example:

Broadcast Journalism & Documentary

Title: Title of the project (length of project if applicable)

3. Major Requirement Essay

In no more than 2 pages, talk about an issue in the news that’s important to you and why. Why is it important to the public at large? Are there aspects of the story that are getting too little attention in the media coverage?

Your essay should be typed, single-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, one-inch margins on all sides. Remember to title your essay.

Creative Producing

In no more than 2 pages, please plan an event and include all the details that you would need to prepare for including, but not limited to, the budget, venue, marketing, specific guest list or types and how many, why are you doing this, food, entertainment, wardrobe direction, menu, speakers, performers, etc. While you have full creative control over what this event is, the more details you include and plan for, the better. And originality matters.

There must be two additional people on your team that you are in charge of coordinating. These two people can have any role or skillsets that you choose, and they must be included in your planning structure.

There must be at least one (1) dilemma that you face in your planning that you must plan accordingly for. You can choose one of the following examples or come up with your own dilemma that directly affects the planning of your event:

  • Two people that are vital to the event have had a fall-out and will not work with each other.
  • Your event requires food to be present but there are many different dietary restrictions and the budget cannot accommodate multiple different dishes to match these dietary needs.

This essay should be typed in Times New Roman, 12 font, one-inch margins, single-spaced and no longer than two (2) pages in length. You may not use bullet points; this must be in essay format with full sentences. First person language is fine to utilize.

4. Autobiographical Video Essay

A direct link to upload this requirement will appear on your Application Status Page once the rest of the Creative Supplement has been submitted.

Create a short video essay no longer than two (2) minutes in length. Tell us your story as if you were creating a project proposal and pitching it. In this video essay, you will answer all of these questions:

  • What is your background?
  • How did you discover your passion for producing?
  • Outside of your immediate family members, who has had a major influence on your life and helped get you to where you are today?
  • What movie(s) or television show(s) has/have had a profound impact on your decision to pursue Creative Producing?

You may include other dialogue, sounds, images, video clips, etc. to help tell your story but you must include your own voice for the majority of the dialogue. You do not need to film yourself if you are uncomfortable, but there must be visual representations present in your video essay that relate to the content of it. We highly recommend your video essay be completely in English, but you may also supplement with on-screen text whenever necessary.

Film and Media Studies

In no more than 2 pages, write an analysis of a film released in 202 4 that strongly resonated with you. Focus on the film's execution and delivery of themes or messages, particularly how specific uses of the cinematic aesthetic (such as cinematography, editing, and sound) contributed to the overall impact.

2. Creative Resume

3. visual sample.

A direct link to upload this requirement will appear on your Application Status page once the rest of the Creative Supplement has been submitted.

You are encouraged to use music and sound effects in your visual sample. Music may be copyrighted, but must be instrumental (no lyrics, only orchestral pieces and sound effects).

Without using dialogue, voice over or music with lyrics, create a film that is under two minutes and is about a character making a difficult decision. Show that the character is pulled in two different directions at an emotional level, visualize their process of consideration and show that they make a decision. Showcase your 1st choice emphasis interest in your visual sample. For example, if you selected Production Design, we would like to see your production design skills shown throughout your two-minute film. Please follow this prompt as it is written. Not following the prompt (for example: including dialogue or exceeding 2 minutes) could affect how this part of your application is reviewed. Each applicant is required to be the sole creator of their film and all creative supplement requirements.

4. Writing Sample (Directing Emphasis only)

If you select Directing as your emphasis, you must also submit two short writing samples (both prompts below) :

In no more than 500 words, describe a transformational moment in your life that fundamentally changed you as a person. Explain how you gained wisdom and greater understanding of yourself as a result of this experience.

Formatting: Your story should be typed, single-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, one-inch margins on all sides.

All Directing students are required to direct a capstone project. In no more than 200 words, provide a synopsis for an original story for a thesis film that would run approximately 10-15 minutes in length. It should be your original story and not adapted from material authored by someone else. Bear in mind your budget and shooting schedule will be limited.

Public Relations, Advertising and Entertainment Marketing

In no more than 2 pages, describe a public relations, advertising or film marketing campaign that was particularly successful in reaching its target audiences. Examine the overall goal or message of the campaign, how that message was delivered and whether the campaign was effective or not. Please cite supporting research or information that would support your conclusions.

Screen Acting

Writing for film and television, 3. major requirement: short story.

In no more than 2 pages, write a short comedic or dramatic scene based on the prompt below:

Two people who are close experience a sudden calamity that changes their relationship.

Focus on developing and defining characters, building on the story and creating captivating dialogue. Do not use formal screenplay format. We are looking for strength in your storytelling ability.

Your story should be typed, single-spaced, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, one-inch margins on all sides. Remember to title your story.

Step 4: Wait

You’re all done. Now just sit tight. We’ll review your application and get back to you soon.

You can view your application checklist and admission status on your Application Status Page.
