Department of Finance PhD Program

Fisher classroom

The primary objective of the Finance PhD Program is to educate students of exceptional promise to become outstanding researchers and university-level teachers in the field of finance. Graduates of the Program must have a thorough knowledge of the fundamental concepts and theories in finance, an understanding of financial instruments and markets, and an ability to use financial data to analyze models and evaluate financial decisions.

Program Structure

A student admitted to the Ph.D. Program in Finance is expected to have excellent aptitude, motivation, and preparation for rigorous post-masters-level study in finance. Students entering the program without a master's level degree or related coursework may have to take additional courses.

During the first year in the program, the student takes the graduate level course sequence in macroeconomic theory, econometric research tool courses and PhD level courses in asset pricing and corporate finance.

At the end of the first year, the student also must take and pass the Microeconomics Qualifying Examination (the second field exam) administered by the Economics department. During July of the first year, the student must take and pass the Asset Pricing Qualifying and Corporate Finance Qualifying Examinations administered by the Finance Department.

During the first year, the student works on a research paper that much be completed by November 15 of the second year in the program.

In the second year of the program, the student takes advanced PhD-level courses in asset pricing and corporate finance, the finance research reading course as well as macroeconomic theory courses, and additional research tools courses in econometrics and statistics.

After the completion of the second year, the student will take and pass the Candidacy Examination. The Candidacy Examination contains written and oral portions and must be scheduled before the start of the third academic year. The written portion of the candidacy exam is given in July between the second and third year of the program and the oral portion of the candidacy exam is given within 30 days of the written portion of the exam as required by the Graduate school of the Ohio State University.

During the third year of the program, the student takes the Finance Research Seminar course, and must complete the Thesis Proposal requirement. To complete the Thesis Proposal requirement, the student has to submit a scientific paper to the Coordinator of the Ph.D. Program by April 15 of the third year of the program. The Coordinator of the Ph.D. Program then evaluates whether the paper is good enough to be presented to the Thesis Proposal Committee consisting of three faculty members before the end of April. If the paper is deemed good enough at the oral presentation that it can develop into a job market paper for the student to participate in the job market in the fifth year, the student had completed the Thesis Proposal requirement. If the paper does not meet that standard, the student has to complete such a paper and defend it in front of a Thesis Proposal Committee by November 15th of the fourth year.

During the fourth year of the program, the student works on their paper to develop it into a job market paper. The student will get teaching experience. Once they have completed a paper that the major advisor believes is suitable for the job market, the student will present it in a seminar.

During the fifth year of the program, the student will go on the job market, complete the dissertation, defend, and graduate.  The student is responsible for meeting Gradation deadlines.

These predominantly Latino cities in Texas have the lowest cost of living in the U.S.

NEW YORK CITY - A series of cities with heavy Latino populations across the U.S. are ranked among those with the cheapest cost of living in the country , a new study by Smart Asset reports.

In a recent study titled "Salary Needed to Live Comfortable," SmartAsset used the MIT Living Wage Calculator data to gather the basic cost of living for an individual with no children and for two working adults with two children. The data includes the cost of necessities including housing, food, transportation and income taxes.

The study found that, on average, an individual needs $96,500 for sustainable comfort in a major U.S. city. This includes being able to pay off debt and invest for the future. It also found that it is even more expensive for families, who need to make an average combined income of about $235,000 to support two adults and two children without the pressure of living paycheck to paycheck.

Among the cities where the lowest salaries are needed to live comfortably, Texas cities occupied the top three. These cities are also one primarily populated by Latinos.

Houston, Texas takes the first spot. In order to live comfortably in this city, a single adult must make about $36.10 an hour. Annually, they must make $75,088. And in order to live comfortably, the combined salaries for two working adults with two children must be around $175,219.

Houston's Hispanic or Latino population comprises around 49% of the total (almost 3 million people as of 2021) , making it the fourth largest city with the Hispanic population in the U.S, according to Census data.

El Paso, Texas, took the second spot, with single adults needing to make an hourly wage of $36.18 and an annual salary of $75,254 to live comfortably. Combined salaries for two working adults with two children in this city needs to be about $180,461.

In El Paso, about 81% of the population identify as Hispanic or Latino (about 552,000 people). El Paso has also raised national attention due to the increased influx of immigrants over the past year who have made their way to the city. In the last trimester of 2023, for instance, more than 13,000 migrants were bused out of El Paso and into other U.S. cities.

The third city taking the last place in the podium was Lubbock, Texas, where a single adult needs an hourly wage of $36.24 and an annual salary of $75,379 to live comfortably. For two working adults with two children, a combined salary of $181,043 is needed.

Around 37% of the population in Lubbock (94,800 people) identify as Hispanic or Latino .

Conversely, among the cities with the highest salaries needed to live comfortably, New York City, New York; San Jose, California and Irvine, California occupy the top three. In these cities an hourly wage for a single adult needs to be $66.62, $65.74, and $60.96 respectively to live comfortably.

SmartAsset recommends applying the 50/30/20 budget method in order to live with sustainable comfort. Under this method, 50% of your salary should be allocated to your needs, such as housing, groceries and transportation; 30% toward wants like entertainment and hobbies; and 20% toward paying off debt, saving or investing.

Houston Texans unveil four new 'fan-inspired' uniforms ahead of 2024 NFL Draft

These mark the texans' first uniform redesign since the franchise's inception in 2000.

A little over a month after their road uniforms were leaked online and later confirmed by chairman and CEO Cal McNair, the Houston Texans officially showed off their full set of new looks for the 2024 NFL season on Tuesday.

The four new looks are the first uniform redesign the Texans have had since their inception in 2000. According to the team, they are "fan-inspired" after going through "10,000 surveys and 30 focus groups."

The home "Deep Steel Blue" matches what the Texans debuted in 2000. There is blue-on-blue metallic flake paint used on the helmet, which will also feature the team's new H secondary logo on the back.

The Texans' new Color Rush uniforms will showcase their new "H-Town Blue." According to the team, they are the first team in NFL history "to introduce a new logo on an alternate helmet and a two-logo system across all helmets."

"Our fans asked us to be more H-Town and we delivered," McNair said in a statement. "They were with us every step of the way and there's truly something for everyone over the four uniforms."

It's been a busy time off the field for the Texans. After a breakthrough 2023 season that saw them reach the divisional round of the AFC playoffs, they head toward next season with a promising quarterback in C.J. Stroud while adding Stefon Diggs, Danielle Hunter and Joe Mixon, among others.

Now they'll have a new look to go along with all the talent on display on the field.

Four NFL Draft storylines to watch + final QB deep dive with Derrik Klassen | The Exempt List

Charles McDonald is joined by Derrik Klassen of Bleacher Report and Reception Perception to give their final thoughts ahead of the 2024 NFL Draft on storylines to watch and this fascinating quarterback class. The duo start off with the news that Zach Wilson has been traded to the Denver Broncos. Both agree this doesn't mean a lot for anyone except Ben DiNucci, but Charles asks if the New York Jets should consider drafting Aaron Rodgers' replacement at tenth overall (or later in the draft). There are 4-5 first round picks at quarterback this year, and Derrik has charted all of them. Charles and Derrik do a final deep dive on each of the top QBs, breaking down the strengths and weaknesses of Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr. and J.J. McCarthy. Later, Charles presents his four storylines to watch this Thursday as the 2024 NFL Draft kicks off. Charles thinks the ideal landing spot for Drake Maye is the Minnesota Vikings, and that Denver trading up is irresponsible. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars are an ideal candidate to make a move and trade up for a wide receiver or cornerback. Finally Charles presents his take that this defensive tackle class is underrated, which sparks a conversation around how college linebackers are letting the NFL down.
