14 Best Free Online Movie Streaming Sites UK 2024

Jan 3, 2024 10:23am jan 3, 2024 10:13am , by or goren.

With so many streaming services out there these days, it’s easier than ever to watch movies online. However, the costs quickly start to add up, whether you’re looking at a Sky subscription or a streaming service like Netflix – unless you find places to stream movies online for free.

Some services (like Amazon’s Prime Video, Paramount+, etc.) offer limited-time free trials – which is nice, but you still can’t really call it FREE.

Luckily, there are a lot of totally free movie websites as well – yes, you can actually stream movies for free these days, and we’re not just talking about old classics from 100 years ago – you can even find some blockbusters to stream without paying a single pound.

And we’re NOT talking about illegal torrents and piracy sites – all the free streaming movie services we’re going to list here, are perfectly legal. Be careful when you search online – many websites will send you to dubious destinations that not only stream illegal content, but also slam you with spammy warnings and pop-up windows… (In general, if it looks too good to be true – with the most recent Hollywood hits being offered ‘for free’ – then there’s something fishy).

And finally, all the services listed here work in the UK (as of this writing, at least) – there are many free streaming services, like Tubi, Vudo and more – that unfortunately only work in the US (though there are workarounds for that ).

So I took the time to comb through the ones that work on our side of the pond, in order to give you the definitive list of the best free movie streaming sites in the UK.

One last note – most of these will work directly on your browser, but some (like the Roku Channel) require a special app or device. We’ll note this in the site’s description.

1. Channel 4 Films

Channel 4, the free commercial broadcaster, is a great curator of films. Not only that, they also finance films via their Film4 production company.

While Channel 4 is normally available live, via Freeview , it’s also available to watch on-demand via its Channel 4 streaming service.

The streaming service (which used to be called All4 ) is totally free – you just need to register, and then you can watch it directly on your browser, or via an app, which is available for most of the streaming devices and mobile phones in the UK. The one downside? There are advert breaks.

Channel 4’s Film category has an ever-changing collection of films – from romantic comedies to thrillers, dramas, and everything in between. While you won’t usually find the most recent blockbusters – there are some real classics there, plus a few hidden gems.

2. BBC iPlayer Films

BBC iPlayer, the BBC’s on-demand player, is a treasure trove of content. It’s both a catch-up service for movies (and TV programmes) that aired on the BBC recently, plus an on-demand library full of interesting things to watch.

And, yes – it’s all free, sort of – as most people do need to pay the annual TV licence fee. Other than that, you just need to register for an account first. You can watch the movies either directly from your browser, or via the BBC iPlayer app (which is available practically everywhere).

The list of movies you can stream online for free often changes, but it includes both classics AND big Hollywood blockbusters (though usually not very recent ones). As I’m writing this, they’re offering Rainman, Moana, Ghostbusters, The Producers and many more – that’s quite the collection, and all for free (and without adverts!).

3. ITVX Films

ITVX is the streaming service from ITV – the replacement for ITV Hub.

Most of the content on ITVX is totally free to watch (with advert breaks). The optional, paid Premium tier removes the adverts and adds films and TV shows from BritBox.

But the free tier includes more than 10,000 hours of free content – including many films. And, ITVX is really pushing the envelope when it comes to free films – as the list includes a lot of classic Hollywood blockbusters, and even some newer ones.

ITVX is available on most of the streaming devices and Smart TVs sold in the UK ( except for several older boxes and TVs ), as well as on Virgin Media’s TV boxes, Sky Glass and Sky Stream , mobile phones – and you can watch it directly on your browser (once you sign up for a free account).

4. My5 Films

Another free-to-watch commercial channel that normally airs on Freeview, Channel 5 also has an on-demand service, called My5.

It’s totally free (with adverts), and you just need to register for an account. Then, you can stream the movies directly from the website, or via the app, which is available on many streaming devices.

Many of My5’s on-demand free movies come from Pluto TV Movies – which is another streaming TV service owned by Paramount (which owns Channel 5). Many of the films are obscure titles you’ve never heard of – but there are several hidden gems, as well as some older Hollywood hits.

  • Watch Free Movies on My5

5. The Internet Archive – Feature Films

The Internet Archive is a free digital library that includes a massive collection of digital books, games, old websites, and – movies.

All the movies available to stream for free on the Internet Archive are in the Public Domain – so most of them are pretty old. But you can find a lot of real classics there, as well as strange titles you’ve never heard of.

They offer more than 16,500 free films (as of this writing), both feature-length and shorts, divided into categories like Sci-Fi, Horror, Comedy, Film Noir and more. There are also a few curated collections, that help in finding those hidden gems.

You can stream the movies online for free, directly from the website – or even download them as a file to then watch anywhere.

  • Watch Free Films on The Internet Archive

6. Pluto TV

While most of the services in this list offer on-demand movies (and TV shows), Pluto is different, in that it focuses on a long list of “live” channels. You still stream them via the internet – but they work just like live TV channels, where you can only watch what’s streaming RIGHT NOW.

If you miss that live TV experience of flipping channels and dropping in on whatever’s airing at the moment, Pluto will scratch that itch. But they also offer a limited selection of on-demand movies.

There are several live channels dedicated to movies, which are divided into topics – SciFi, action, westerns and more.

You can watch Pluto TV’s content directly on their website, or via one of their apps, for mobile phones and the leading streaming devices.

7. Freevee (Formerly IMDb TV)

For a long time, IMDb TV (which is owned by Amazon) was only available in the US – but thankfully, in 2021, it launched in the UK as well , and then changed its name to Freevee.

The premium service features licensed content from various studios and production companies, as well as original productions.

Therefore, it has some classic films you’ve actually heard of, such as Reservoir Dogs, Hellraiser, Donnie Darko , and others.

And, everything is free to watch – but with advert breaks.

Freevee available both as a Prime Video Channel, which you can access directly on your browser, or with a standalone app which is currently on several streaming devices – such as Amazon’s own Fire TV, Android devices, iOS and more.

And while you do need a (free) Amazon account – you DON’T need to be a Prime subscriber.

8. Plex Free Movies And Live Channels

Plex is normally a popular personal media streamer, that helps people organise and watch their own media ( see our full Plex review ). However, they also have two services with free content – the on-demand Movies and TV section, and the Live TV section.

The on-demand Movies and TV part of Plex offers an eclectic list of movies you can watch for free (with adverts). In the US, the list includes many known titles – but in the UK, you would be hard-pressed to find movies you’ve heard of.

Still, they’re all free – and there are some interesting finds, especially if you’re a fan of some specific niches.

The Live TV section offers live channels in various topics and niches – some of which also show movies – mostly older classics and niche oddities.

Plex’s on-demand and live free movies can be streamed directly on the Plex website , or via their apps (which are available practically anywhere).

  • Watch Free Movies on Plex

9. The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel, which launched in the UK a couple of years (see our review), is a free service from Roku, that gives you thousands of free movies, TV programmes and kids’ content on demand.

The Roku Channel in the UK features a selection of popular global and British content. Most of the movies are pretty old or obscure, but there are some classics, especially if you like specific niches like horror – as well as a few Roku originals, such as Weird: The Al Yankovic Story .

Unlike most of the other services on this list, The Roku Channel doesn’t work directly on a browser – but instead only works via one of Roku’s streaming devices ( see our Roku comparison here ). In the US, you CAN stream The Roku Channel from the website – and hopefully, this functionality will reach the UK at some point.

  • Watch The Roku Channel (ONLY For Roku Devices)

Formerly known as ‘W4Free’, Wedotv is the UK version of a service with several versions of free movie streaming sites around Europe. Everything is free – but with advert breaks.

The site currently offers hundreds of movies on-demand, as well as some TV series. The films are divided into categories, and they have a nice selection of genre films, such as horror and crime.

As is usually the case with free streaming, you’re not likely to find any blockbusters or many films that you’ve heard of – but you might find a few hidden gems.

  • Watch Free Movies on Wedotv

11. Top Documentary Films

If you’re looking to learn something, you’ll find thousands of full-length documentary films, as well as series and shorts, divided into categories – from history to health, sports, nature and the list goes on and on.

While the user interface makes finding things a bit messy, I like the fact that each documentary has a long description, and often also user ratings and reviews – so it’s easier to decide what to watch.

Many of the films are simply embedded from YouTube – but the fact that someone took the time to curate all these selections, makes things so much more comfortable.

  • Watch Free Top Documentary Films

12. Films for Action

This is another great collection of documentaries, with their official goal being “to provide citizens of the world with the information and perspectives essential to creating a more just, sustainable, and democratic society.”

You will find more than 4,000 documentaries – from feature-length films to shorts and clips, divided into categories like Economics, Racism, Gender, Politics and more.

The interface is a bit confusing, with so much stuff to watch, but if you dig into it, you’re going to find a lot of food for thought.

Most of the titles in the digital library are free (without adverts!), with a few films only being available to the Patreons who donate to the site, and also a small selection of Pay-per-view titles.

  • Watch Free Documentaries on Films for Action

13. Filmzie

Filmzie is yet another service with free films (and TV shows), with advert breaks, but there’s one thing that sets it apart from some of the others – there are lots of indie films here, and Filmzie say they pay the filmmakers for the views, so you’re supporting the people who made the film when you’re watching.

The selection is, for the most part, what you would expect – a mishmash of films you’ve never heard of, some interesting hidden surprises, reality shows ( Gordon Ramsay is everywhere!) and – as promised – a selection of films from independent creators.

You can watch directly on the site , and they also have an impressive selection of apps – for mobile phones, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung TVs and more.

  • Watch Free Movies on Filmzie

14. YouTube

YouTube gets an honourable mention, because there are indeed A LOT of free movies you can stream for free in there – but… they’re often hard to find.

With millions and millions of clips and titles, YouTube is also full of movies that get uploaded illegally – and it’s often hard to distinguish between what’s under copyright and what’s not.

Still, if you know what you’re looking for (especially older movies that are already in the public domain), you can find a lot of free films to watch and enjoy, and there are a lot of playlists that curate public domain titles.

Best Free Movie Streaming Sites No Sign Up Required in 2022

free film websites uk

Watching movies and TV shows on-demand is certainly a great way to unwind. However, combining several premium-priced streaming services can easily turn into a significant monthly expense. So, what about free movie streaming sites?

You'll be surprised to know that a very nice selection of movie streaming sites offer their content completely free of charge. Some of those don't even require you to sign-up. And even more importantly, many of those come with big-budget movies.

Therefore, if you think that free movie streaming sites only bring black-and-white movies, you're quite wrong. Maybe they don't have the latest blockbusters, but the situation has dramatically changed in the last couple of years.

We've set out to find truly the best free-of-charge movie-streaming websites. This means that we've tested a whole bunch of those, checked their libraries, made sure to check for any access restrictions, and more.

In addition, we're also going to answer plenty of frequently asked questions.

17 Best Free Movie Streaming Sites With No Sign-Up Required

The following 17 websites let you watch plenty of full movies online for free, and they don't even require you to sign-up. Just click on a movie and start playing, as simple as that.

1. Sony Crackle

Crackle Homepage

Sony Crackle is available in the USA and Australia, free of charge. In other regions (Latin America, the Caribbean), the service is premium-priced, and it's blocked in the rest of the world. We recommend using ExpressVPN , as this VPN can easily unblock Sony Crackle outside the USA no matter where in the world you are.

Now owned by Sony, Crackle is a completely free source of amazing movies and TV shows. Aside from bringing a highly polished UI, it features an exciting library of titles.

Even though you won't find the latest blockbusters here, you'll find several newer and older titles that definitely deserve your attention. Some of these are exclusive to Crackle, so you won't find those anywhere else.

Aside from bringing almost every classic movie imaginable, newly-released content will appeal to those looking for recent cinematography creations. Just like with Netflix and other movie streaming services, keep in mind that the content can be available for a limited time.

And finally, this website is supported by ads, meaning that you can expect periodic interruptions during your stream - which aren't that annoying, to be completely fair.

2. The Roku Channel

The Roku Channel Library of Free Content

The Roku Channel is available in the United States and the United Kingdom. However, if you connect to a VPN server using ExpressVPN , you can access this platform and its content from anywhere in the world.

Several years ago, Roku launched its own media streaming platform. More precisely, we're talking about a "channel" here, as Roku likes to refer to media platforms as channels. It features thousands of movies and TV shows, and it's available completely free of charge.

What should be noted here is that you don't need to have a Roku device to access The Roku Channel. It's available on the Web as well, letting you stream its content without having to register for an account.

The Roku Channel gets its content from numerous high-profile partners, including Lionsgate, Paramount, MGM, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Warner Bros, and Disney. It even has a range of non-traditional TV channels , focused on specific topics.

Finally, know that The Roku Channel often hosts big-budget movies that are only a few years old. Therefore, this platform is a true example of how the best free movie streaming sites can offer something other than classics and black-and-white movies.

Plex TV Free Library of Movies

In the world of home theater software, Plex is a well-known name. However, this is also a media streaming platform, offering plenty of content - completely free of charge! It allows you to stream movies, TV shows, live TV, Web shows, podcasts, and more.

Considering the platform launched in December 2019 , it's perhaps the youngest entry on our list of the best free movie streaming websites. However, it truly offers plenty. Right now, you'll find titles such as Bad Roomies, Sex After Kids, The Age of Blood, The Border, and plenty more.

The truth is that Plex isn't offering the latest blockbusters. However (and trust us on this), there's always something new and interesting to watch. That's because new titles appear on Plex on a regular basis, just like on premium-priced alternatives.

Another good news is that Plex works on pretty much any platform or device imaginable. This means that you can create your library of locally-stored content, and then add a free media streaming service on top of that. Also, keep in mind that Plex can be used on the Web, and this includes its free streaming content as well.

TubiTV Homepage

Users in the European Union, as well as those who wish to access the American version of Tubi TV (to get its entire library), can use ExpressVPN to unblock this service. If you need additional information, here's how to watch Tubi TV outside the USA .

No matter if you like to watch recently-released movies or older classics, Tubi TV will meet your needs. Upon opening this free movie-streaming website, you will be greeted by a highly polished interface. Some of the featured movies will be displayed right away, as well as sections like the most popular titles, comedy, and horror flicks.

Aside from movies, Tubi TV also has an interesting library of TV shows that have their roots in drama, comedy, crime, action, and documentaries. And when it comes to the available movies and TV shows, Tubi TV's library spans from the '70s all the way up to 2010s.

A large portion of this website's library consists of independent movies and older classics. If that's your thing, you will find that Tubi TV is the ultimate resource. It reportedly has more than 8,500 films gained through partnerships with Paramount Pictures, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Lionsgate.

Youtube Homepage

Even though YouTube is available worldwide, some of its content can be restricted on a per-country basis. With this said, our strong recommendation would be to check our article on the best VPN for YouTube , so you can learn how to access its US version.

You might be surprised to see YouTube on our list of the best free movie streaming sites. However, YouTube is much more than just funny videos - this is a highly valuable vault of older and newer films that are freely available.

Aside from watching full movies on YouTube, you can use this platform to stay in the loop regarding the latest productions, watch trailers, and follow some excellent channels related to movies and TV shows.

As you can imagine, YouTube doesn't exactly bring you the latest blockbusters. However, channels such as Timeless Classic Movies and Timeless Western Movies are excellent examples of what to expect. And between watching full movies, you can expand your knowledge by checking interesting stuff on CinemaSins , Screen Junkies , and Screen Rant .

PlutoTV Homepage

To  watch PlutoTV outside the US , you need to use a VPN. Our strong recommendation would be to go for ExpressVPN, as it unblocks PlutoTV on any device. Here's how to get your ExpressVPN 30-day trial .

When it comes to on-demand content, you can find plenty of online sources. This is why we wanted to include something different, like PlutoTV. This free streaming service acts as a traditional television where you simply tune into what's on air.

In other words, PlutoTV connects you to dozens of content providers, all from a single place - and without you having to pay a single dollar.

Once you open PlutoTV, you will get to see dozens of different channels. Click on a channel, and the chosen live-stream will begin to play. If you take a closer look, you'll find channels dedicated to older movies, and you will find channels that cater to audiences looking for newer titles as well.

And of course, if you don't want to watch a movie live, there's a sizeable library of on-demand content that receives new titles regularly.

ConTV Homepage

ConTV is currently available in the US only. You might be able to access the website from anywhere, but you need ExpressVPN to stream any of its titles outside the USA.

Next, we have something quite different for our list of the best free movie streaming sites. Many of you have previously heard about Viewster, a popular destination for fans of anime, cartoons, comics, and similar. However, upon being acquired by Cinedigm, that platform was shut down.

All of Viewster's content has been transferred to ConTV (also owned by Cinedigm). With this said, you already have a pretty clear idea of what to expect.

ConTV gives you a sizeable library of movies - many of which come from independent studios and individuals. Therefore, you'll find a large number of lesser-known titles here, and trust us - these are not afraid to dive into controversial topics.

However, we also need to tell you that not all of its content is available for free. However, there's plenty to watch even if you don't create an account. Just visit the website, look for free titles (you'll easily spot these as they're clearly indicated), and start streaming.

8. Popcornflix

Popcornflix Homepage

Popcornflix is only available in select markets, so it's advisable to use a reliable VPN to overcome this obstacle. Our recommendation would be  ExpressVPN , so make sure to learn how to watch Popcornflix outside the US .

This is a long-standing free movie-streaming website that has recently gone through an overhaul, modernizing its online presence. Today, it brings a polished UI design that's easy to use, and an extensive catalog of older movies and cult classics.

Popcornflix can be a perfect choice if you are looking for movies from the '90s. There are newer titles as well, but they are mostly B-movies. In general, you can find titles from the 1930s up to 2010s.

Make sure to explore your way around this website as we are sure you'll find at least a few dozen of interesting titles. This is also a good way to rediscover movies that might have gone under the radar. And let's not forget that aside from films, Popcornflix also offers a nice selection of TV shows.

9. Internet Archive

Internet Archive Movie Streaming Website

The Internet Archive website is dedicated to preserving plenty of different types of online content, both old and new. This is where you'll find e-books, audio files, software, images, and movies.

As you can expect, we're talking about older films, many of which can be found scattered across numerous websites. Well, the thing about the Internet Archive site is that it gathers all those movies, organizes them in a nice way, and allows you to consume this content in any way you want.

To get to the movies section of the Internet Archive, click on the 'Movies' icon, found at the top of the page. You'll be immediately presented with a list of prominent categories, such as Animation & Cartoons, News & Public Affairs, Television, Vlogs, and more.

As you'll see, the Internet Archive platform brings more than just movies, as it gathers various types of video material. If you click on 'All Video,' you'll get to a library of 25,000+ files. Then, feel free to browse the available movies by categories, and finally start streaming anything you'd like to watch.

10. Classic Cinema Online

Classic Cinema Online Homepage

A lot of beloved movies from the Golden Era of Hollywood are now publicly available for free. Unsurprisingly, you can find some high-quality movie streaming websites that specialize in this movie era. However, our favorite is 'Classic Cinema Online,' which provides a clutter-free experience, and it doesn't serve annoying ads either.

As its name says, this free movie website is focused on older movies. These range from the 1930s to the 1970s and all of them are brought from different Internet sources - which are hosting them legally.

In general, this website relies on third-party streaming services. That's why you'll often see embeds from YouTube and similar websites. As long as those websites host the movie you want to watch, you can watch it without any issues.

There's no registration required, and this website comes with a nice discussion panel where you can express your thoughts and impressions.

11. Movies Found Online

Movies Found Online Homepage

This website uses legal sources only, acting as a movie repository. In the majority of cases, you'll get to watch movies posted on YouTube – which are completely legal and free of charge.

There are also plenty of public domain movies which are usually older titles with expired copyrights. Some of the available titles on Movies Found Online come from the 1900s, and many of them span all the way to freshly-released films.

Movies Found Online comes with an easy-to-use interface. You can browse different genres using the main navigation bar at the top. The homepage is also doing a good job of featuring recently added titles.

Users are free to give ratings and share their opinion. It means that Movies Found Online is not just one of the best free movie streaming sites, but a highly active community as well.

12. Free Movies Cinema

Free Movies Cinema Homepage

Even though it comes with a generic name, there's nothing generic about this website. Free Movies Cinema is a curated collection of movies that comes with an often updated library.

It's been around for several years now, and it managed to build a library of more than 600 films - so it's clear that there's plenty to watch.

As you open the website, you'll see a list of featured movies. You'll soon see that we're talking about independent movies here, but there are also some well-known titles as well. Before pressing the play button, you can read more about each title, check its production year, see how many people have watched it, and more.

13. Retrovision

Retrovision Homepage

Next, on our list of the best free movie streaming sites with no sign-up required, we have Retrovision. It could be said that this is a niche website because it focuses on classic titles (from the '30s to the 2000s), with a big highlight on British cinematography.

The homepage of Retrovision is filled with interesting suggestions on what to watch. Each movie or TV show title brings a short overview, so you can get to know them before watching. At the moment, you can use Retrovision to view titles such as Abbott and Costello, Bonanza, movies starring Lucille Ball, and more.

There's also a helpful comment section if you want to share your opinion with other website visitors. The only downside is that Retrovision hasn't been updated in a while. Still, plenty of fully-working titles await.

Veoh Website Interface

Veoh started as a rather ambitious project a few years back, promising to bring the ultimate collection of valuable video files from the Web. However, facing a copyright lawsuit initiated by Universal Music, the platform struggled for a long time.

Even though Veoh managed to dismiss the trial in the end (being declared legal), it never quite managed to reach its full potential. Still, even though this isn't the most polished website today, it's worth noting that Veoh exists - and we recommend checking it out.

To get started with Veoh, make sure to click on 'Movies' using the website's navigation bar. Then, you'll be asked to select a genre, after which Veoh will present a series of movie clips.

However, make sure to check the length of each file via its thumbnail. Aside from bringing full-length movies, there are also plenty of clips available. So, to avoid getting frustrated, make sure that you've chosen to play a full-length one.

Aside from letting you stream movies, Veoh also brings all kinds of short video clips, music files, and there are even 'channels' available - which act as playlists. So, overall, Veoh is definitely worth your time, as you'll find plenty of content here.

15. Open Culture

OpenCulture Homepage

Created by Dan Colman, Open Culture is a rich source of Web-related resources. This website isn't only about movies, as it brings audiobooks, courses, textbooks, e-books, and more (all of which is legal to download, of course).

We do feel this is one of the best free movie streaming sites due to its thoughtfully curated library, which includes movies from the 1920s all the way to the 2010s.

Upon accessing the movies section of Open Culture, you'll see a list of featured films. They all come with short descriptions, and you can find curated collections as well. It's clear that Open Culture was made by someone passionate about collecting free Internet sources. And as you can imagine, many of the films found here are actually links to other websites.

16. Documentary Heaven

Documentary Heaven Homepage

Now, something for those who like thought-provoking content. Documentary Heaven simply had to find its place among the best free movie sites. The main reason for this lies in its content. Entirely dedicated to documentaries, this website features movies you won't find anywhere else.

Even though documentaries aren't a new format, they went through a fast development in the 2000s and 2010s - so you'll find plenty of movies from those eras on Documentary Heaven. If you're into the latest titles, you're in luck since this resource specifically targets movies released in recent years.

We recommend taking a look at the 'Top 100' category. As you'll see, this website collects media from all over the Internet. It means that some movies might not be available, but you shouldn't stop there. A large portion of the library is fully functional, and you can stream the available content with no annoying ads.

17. Top Documentary Films

Very similar to our previous suggestion, Top Documentary Films is a repository of documentaries from all over the Internet. It relies on a huge number of sources and brings legal movies that you can stream. Many of those titles were released in the 2000s and 2010s, so plenty of new films await here (even some released this year).

You can browse numerous sub-categories or simply go for the most popular titles. We have tested close to a dozen movies, and all were playing without any buffering. Also, many titles are offered in HD, which was a nice surprise. And finally, there are no annoying ads, which is always an important benefit.

4 Best Free Movie Streaming Sites Sign-Up Required

And now, let's check out some of the best free-of-charge movie streaming sites - that require you to sign-up. Don't worry - they won't ask for your payment information.

1. BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer Homepage

BBC iPlayer is available in the United Kingdom only. With this said, you'll need a VPN if you're not in the UK. Only a handful of VPNs can still unblock iPlayer, with ExpressVPN being one of those VPNs. Find more info in our guide to the best VPNs for BBC iPlayer .

BBC's iPlayer is one of the most underrated media streaming platforms. One of the reasons for that is due to its limited availability, as it's focused on the UK alone. However, this is a relatively simple obstacle, as a VPN can help you unblock a treasure trove of content.

This is where you'll find a huge range of movies, TV shows, documentaries, cartoons, and plenty more. And the most important thing is, we're mostly talking about brand-new content, which is available up to 30 days after its broadcast on BBC's channels.

Of course, there's plenty of titles that are available for more than a month. And since the BBC has plenty of licensing deals with American broadcasters, you'll find movies and TV shows produced by Hollywood movie studios and well-known TV networks.

Another great thing about BBC iPlayer is that it's available on the Web, and it has a really nicely designed website. However, you'll also find native apps for plenty of platforms, including media streaming devices. All in all, it's worth signing up for this one.

Selection of Free Movies on Vudu

Vudu is restricted to the USA only. However, there's a way to watch Vudu outside the USA by using a VPN service. We highly recommend ExpressVPN for unblocking this platform.

Vudu was one of the first free-of-charge movie streaming websites to start bringing Hollywood blockbusters to its library. And as such, it acts as an example that you don't have to pay to access great movies and TV shows. This is still the case, as Vudu is a highly active platform with new titles coming to its library on a regular basis.

An interesting thing about Vudu is that it brings a really wide range of titles. In other words, it's not afraid to combine low-budget movies with the latest blockbusters, so you'll need to spend some time browsing to get to the truly interesting stuff.

However, once you dig a bit deeper, you'll be surprised by what Vudu offers. We're not talking about only a handful of great movies. There are dozens of high-profile films at any given moment, with new ones just around the corner. Therefore, we're sure you'll keep coming back to Vudu in the future as well.

IMDb TV Homepage

IMDb TV is available within the United States and US territories. However, as per our tests, ExpressVPN helps you access and use this platform from anywhere in the world.

When you set out to find any information about any movie released ever - you probably turn to IMDb. This Amazon-owned website has been the ultimate online destination for movie and TV show fans for a long time now. Therefore, it's not as surprising to know that it also offers a media streaming service.

Called IMDb TV, this is a freshly released streaming platform that's filled with well-known titles. In terms of movies, this is where you'll find Hell or High Water, Crimson Tide, AustenLand, Godzilla, Alien, Taxi Driver, and more. And when it comes to TV shows, some of the most popular titles are Roswell, Client List, Lost, Boston Legal, and more.

If you're after big-budget titles, know that IMDb TV should be your go-to destination. We were very surprised to see that a free-of-charge platform can have so many Hollywood blockbusters. And on top of that, we strongly recommend checking out IMDB's original programming, especially if you're into behind-the-scenes stories.

Kanopy Library of Free Movies

We're going to end our list of the best free movie streaming sites with a highly interesting recommendation. Called Kanopy, this streaming platform is filled with big-budget titles, while bringing no ads whatsoever.  So, what's the catch here?

Well, the catch is that Kanopy is a different kind of media streaming service. To access it, you need a library card or university login. However, the good news is that a huge number of libraries and universities across the USA have already joined Kanopy.

Before you get started with this platform, make sure to check the official list of libraries and universities that have partnered with Kanopy. Once you subscribe, you can access more than 30,000 titles and watch them on a range of TVs, phones, computers, and more.

Therefore, even though Kanopy isn't for everyone, we're sure that many of you are going to love it. So, why not take advantage of the benefits that your library or university bring?

Is It Safe & Legal to Use Free Movie Streaming Sites?

Yes, it's legal to use free movie streaming sites. However, there's a catch.

If you're not careful enough, it's quite easy to land on an illegal streaming platform. These can be very polished websites, trying to mask the fact that they're bringing pirated content.  With this said, it's your responsibility to make sure you're on the safe side of the law.

We'd also like to remind you that all of the recommendations found in this article are legal . This means you're free to select any option and stream any movie that you find on those websites.

Can You Use Free Movie Streaming Sites Without Ads?

No , there's no way to eliminate ads on free movie streaming sites.

As you probably know, ad-blockers exist to eliminate different kinds of online ads. However, using those on free movie streaming sites will break their playback functionality. That's because their revenue comes from serving ads.

The only truly ad-free recommendation with freshly released movies is Kanopy . However, it isn't available for everyone, as you need an applicable public library card or you need to a student of a university partnered with Kanopy.

What Not to Expect From Free Movie Streaming Sites?

Before we go ahead with listing the best free movie streaming websites, it's crucial to set your expectations properly. So, let's talk about what these websites don't offer.

  • The Latest Hollywood Blockbusters:  As you can imagine, the latest blockbusters are reserved for premium-priced services. However, it's not that you can expect old movies only. These streaming platforms come with highly attractive libraries, featuring relatively new movies, released only a few years ago. They also tend to feature plenty of classics - and we're talking about both movies and TV shows.
  • Daily- or Weekly-Updated Libraries:  If you've used premium services like Netflix or Hulu, you know that they bring new content on a daily or weekly basis. The situation is a bit different when it comes to free movie streaming sites. They refresh their libraries on a monthly basis (typically). That's why it's a smart idea to combine several of those, so there's always something new to watch.
  • An Ad-Free Streaming Experience:  Even free-of-charge streaming platforms need to generate revenue somehow. Therefore, many of those rely on ads. However, this is a very low price to pay for accessing their libraries, as these are typically 30-second ads.
  • Unlimited Access From Anywhere:  Even free streaming platforms need to respect licensing laws and restrictions. This is why many of the following options are restricted to certain countries. Still, this is something that a capable VPN will help you overcome. Here are the best VPNs for streaming , as per our hands-on tests.

If you're not willing to adapt to the above-mentioned restrictions, perhaps it's time to think about getting a subscription to a premium-priced streaming platform. To help you with this, here's our overview of the best streaming services right now.

Can You Watch Newly Released Movies via Free Movie Streaming Sites in 2022?

Yes, newly released movies can be watched via free movie streaming sites. Check this guide .

If you're after commercial and independent movies, we highly recommend checking out BBC's iPlayer , The Roku Channel , YouTube , Free Movies Cinema , and MoviesFoundOnline .

In terms of other types of content, both Documentary Heaven and Top Documentary Films feature titled released in 2020.

In terms of the latest Hollywood blockbusters, these are typically reserved for premium-priced platforms like Netflix, Hulu, or Prime Video. If you don't mind watching blockbusters released two, three, or more years ago, free platforms will meet your needs.

Related Content: Netflix Review / Hulu Review / Amazon Prime Video Review

Can You Download Full Movies & Episodes From Movie Streaming Websites?

No, you can't download movies for offline viewing. After all, we're talking about streaming here. However, there's one exception.

At the moment, you can download movies from the Internet Archive . That's where you'll typically find older titles, which are copyright-free. Other free movie streaming sites are primarily focused on streaming, as this allows them to serve ads and generate revenue.

Still, know that there's a handful of websites that allow you to download movies. These typically don't let you stream movies, which is why we haven't included them in this article. For more info, here are the best free movie download websites .

What Are the Best Movies to Stream via Free Movie Streaming Sites?

You will be surprised to know that websites such as Crackle, The Roku Channel, Popcornflix, and Pluto bring a huge selection of very interesting films. So, we're going to give you our recommendations for each of those platforms.

  • Crackle: You'll find plenty of popular tiles here such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, About Alex, Cadillac Records, V/H/S, Dead Snow, and more.
  • The Roku Channel: We recommend checking out movies such as Wrath of the Titans, Seabiscuit, Firewall, Something's Gotta Give, Coriolanus, It Follows, and more.
  • Plex: This platform currently features movies like Burnt, Vanishing on 7th Street, Shadow Dancer, Carol, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, and The Two Faces of January.
  • Tubi TV: Among the most popular titles are Empire State, Southpaw, Desperado, The Intruder, Knock Knock, The Gambler, Magic Mike XXL, and Apocalypto.
  • YouTube: This treasure trove of content brings you titles like I Am Not Your Negro, Europa Report, Hunter, With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story, and more.
  • PlutoTV: The most popular titles on PlutoTV are Harlem Nights, Carriers, Vacancy, Above the Rim, Rat Race, Ultraviolet, Project Almanac, and plenty more.
  • Popcornflix: Plenty of interesting movies await on this platform, including Bel Canto, Train to Busan, Mr. Nobody, Drinking Buddies, The Void, and Patriot Games.
  • BBC iPlayer: We highly recommend watching The Revenant, The Shining, Interview with the Vampire, Apocalypse Now, Poltergeist, Short Term 12, and The Dutchess.
  • IMDbTV: Both new and classic titles await, like Taxi Driver, Whale Rider, Donnie Darko, Memento, Cube, Austenland, Crimson Tide, and Godzilla.
  • Kanopy: When it comes to high-profile titles, we recommend Moonlight, Colette, Captain Fantastic, Lady Bird, Amy, Leave No Trace, and 20th Century Women.

What Are the Best Free Streaming Sites That Require a VPN Service?

The best geo-restricted streaming sites (that come free of charge) are Crackle , The Roku Channel , Popcornflix , Tubi TV , Pluto TV , Vudu , and YouTube (USA) , among others.

The truth is that by getting a VPN subscription, you get to unlock a whole new world of entertainment. And yes, we understand that VPNs come at a price (an affordable one, though). However, this is a wise investment that helps you save plenty in the long run.

Once again, our strong recommendation would be to use ExpressVPN. We've tested a huge number of VPNs, and this is the only that helps you unblock just about any platform out there, including any of the websites we've mentioned in this article. Here's how to try ExpressVPN for up to 30 days (for free) .

Why Are Free Online Movie Streaming Sites Restricted to Certain Regions? What Should You Do to Access Them?

Free-of-charge streaming sites are obliged to respect licensing deals. This is the reason why they either serve region-based libraries or are available in certain countries only.

The only way to overcome this obstacle is to use a VPN service. These applications are designed to change your IP address and encrypt your Internet connection . And that's all you'll ever need to unblock websites.

Once you download a VPN on your device, launch it, and connect to a server in a country where the desired website is available. From there on, you'll get to use the Web as if you're physically in that specific country.

Can VPNs Really Keep You Safe When Using Free Streaming Sites?

Yes, VPN services can keep you perfectly safe , no matter if you're streaming movies, browsing the Internet, or doing any other online activity.

That's because VPNs are designed to encrypt your Web traffic, hiding anything you do online from anyone else on the Web, so even your ISP (Internet Service Provider) won't know what you're doing online .

However, don't make a mistake thing that every VPN is the same. Only a handful can help you unblock new types of websites while making sure that your privacy is protected. With this said, the best VPN money can buy today is ExpressVPN (don't worry, it's affordable).

This is where we conclude our article on the best free movie streaming sites in 2022. In case there's anything you'd like to say or add, make sure to post a comment below. And of course, don't forget to share this article online. Thank you!

Where to watch movies online for free in the UK

By Author Pete Chatfield

Posted on Last updated: 08/02/2024

If you’re a bit of a film buff, then I’m sure you’re always on the lookout for new material to watch without paying through the nose for it. Well, you’re in luck. Here’s a complete list of sites for you to enjoy movies online, completely free.

Watch Free Movies Online

The best UK sites to watch movies online for free

I remember years ago, I used to complain about the cost of my Sky subscription and how much time I spent haggling with them to get a better price. But at least all of my movies and sport were all in one place. But with so many streaming services now on the market, including Netflix, Disney and Amazon Video, it becomes quite an expensive business if you want access to a decent catalogue of films.

But fortunately, there are plenty of sites out there that will allow you to watch a whole range of movies for free. And I’m not talking about ‘those’ sites. You know the ones. They ask you to download a VPN, shower you with pop-ups and probably install a virus onto your device.

No, the sites I discuss in this post are all from legitimate sources. And don’t think they only show silent films from the 1920’s. A lot of these providers play some recent and exclusive content, and there’s a good chance you can find some real gems.

Why do companies offer free films?

In most cases, streaming services will show adverts when they show content, which earns them money. Or they hope that you will see the kind of programmes they have on offer, which will encourage you to sign up for a paid subscription.

And in some few cases, the movies have no real value, so they’re happy to give them away for free.

Where can you watch these free movies online?

This depends on your chosen provider and the devices you own. Nearly all these sites allow you to stream straight to your computer or phone.

However, if you have a more recent television, you can download your provider’s app straight to your TV.

So, let’s take a look at the best services on offer.

BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer

You may know that iPlayer shows a lot of recent BBC content, but it also has a whole range of films too. From classics to thrillers to comedies, there’s an extensive selection. As with most streaming sites, the content you can watch changes regularly. But some examples on there as I write this post include The Jackal, Boyz n the Hood, Stan & Ollie and Shakespeare in Love.

How can you watch BBC iPlayer?

  • Stream directly to your computer or mobile device
  • Download the iPlayer app for your phone, tablet or compatible device
  • Download the app to your smart TV

ITV Player

ITVX has improved quite a lot over the years, and it offers a fairly decent number of movies. We’re not talking about the latest blockbusters, but I’ve seen films like Austin Powers, Die Hard, Paul Blart and The Cable Guy. Many of these depend on what’s been shown recently on the main ITV channels.

How can you watch ITV movies?

  • Download the ITVX for your phone, tablet or compatible device

Channel 4/All 4

Channel 4 and All 4

Channel 4 has been making its own films since the early 80’s and has built up quite an impressive back catalogue. Like iPlayer, the list of movies you can watch will change regularly. And you need to remember that, unlike the BBC, using the service also comes with ad breaks.

At the moment, there are 44 movies on offer to watch, including Withnail & I, Rocketman and John Wick: Chapter 3.

How can you watch Channel 4 movies?

  • Download the All 4 app for your phone, tablet or compatible device

my5

And to complete our list of mainstream TV channels and their movies comes My5. With over 40 movies to watch, there’s something there for almost everyone. Although some of these films are a straight-to-TV affair, there are some blockbusters, including Dances With Wolves and The Fifth Element.

How can you watch Channel 5 movies?

  • Download the My5 app to your phone, tablet or compatible device

Rakuten TV

Rakuten offers access to TV channels and films, with a mixture of free and paid-for content. You’ll find lots of popular Hollywood movies, although the latest releases are generally only available if you rent or buy. But there are some good options available for free, such as The Heist, The Little Vampire and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.

How can you watch Rakuten TV?

  • Download the Rakuten TV app to your phone, tablet or compatible device

Internet Archive

Internet Archive

This is a non-profit library that shares not only movies but also music, software, and books. There are over 83,000 movies listed, although most are ones you will never have heard of. But they’re separated into categories, so if you’re looking for a bit of a surprise, then this site is ideal.

How can you watch movies on Internet Archive?

  • Stream to your computer or mobile device
  • Download the file

Plex

Plex allows you to stream over 130 channels for free and has over 20,000 free on-demand movies and shows from Warner Brothers, Lionsgate and MGM. There are some popular films there, including Lord of War, Zulu and Stakeland. The US version of Plex has far more movies to offer, so hopefully, they will soon become available in the UK too.

How can you watch films on Plex?

  • Download the Plex app to your phone, tablet or compatible device

Pluto TV

Pluto TV is similar to Sky. You have access to over 100 channels of television, which you watch live with adverts. But there is also on-demand content, including TV shows and movies. These aren’t blockbusters but generally films you’ve heard of and never bothered to watch.

How to watch free movies on Pluto TV

  • Download the Pluto TV app to your phone, tablet or compatible device

Wedotv

This site brings you sports, TV and movies, all for free. Like Pluto TV, you won’t find many mainstream films, but with over 500 titles, there is still plenty of choice.

How to watch Wedotv

  • Download the Wedotv app to your phone, tablet or compatible device

The Roku Channel

Roku Channel

The Roku Channel brings you movies, as well as entertainment TV and kids’ shows. It even makes its own original shows. The content is always changing, and although you won’t find the biggest films on Roku, there’s still a good choice.

How to watch The Roku Channel

  • Watch the Roku channel or Hisense TV, SkyQ or NowTV

Filmzie

Filmzie brings you plenty of TV shows as well as movies. These generally aren’t major films but those made by independent makers. They claim to treat all content equally and provide recommendations based on viewer preferences. So there’s a good chance that you could find some great, lesser-known movies here.

How to watch Filmzie

  • Download the Filmzie app to your phone, tablet or compatible device

Top Documentary Films

Top Documentary Films

If watching a man visiting his wife at Nakatomi Plaza on Christmas Eve or watching dinosaurs eating goats isn’t your thing, then perhaps you’re looking for something a little more highbrow. Well, you can’t go wrong with a documentary.

With arts, sports, politics, history, science and many more topics covered, there should be something there to pique your interest. Most of the films are actually listed on YouTube, but the site points directly to them.

How to watch Top Documentary Films

UK Film Channel

UK Film Channel

Another site that features British indie films. You’ll find both full-length movies and shorts, and there’s also an option to pay a small rental fee for some of their movies. Like Top Documentary Films, Uk Film Channel streams most of their movies straight from YouTube.

How to watch UK Film Channel

YouTube

And I thought it was just a place for funny cat videos. Although it’s not the easiest to search through, type in ‘movie’ and change the filter to over 20 minutes, and you will see a list of films you can watch. And there are some decent ones too.

How to watch YouTube

  • Download the YouTube app to your phone, computer or compatible device
  • Download the YouTube app to your smart TV

So, which is the best service to watch free movies on?

This mainly depends on the type of film you want to watch. If you’re looking for well-known and more recent films, then take a look at Rakuten and Plex. But don’t discount BBC iPlayer and All 4.

If you want to watch something away from the norm, look at Filmzie for some great indie content.

How to watch movies free: the best free streaming sites for movies and TV today

No subscription? No problem

How to watch movies free

It used to be so easy – just switch on your TV and pick a channel. Now, although we've got a far wider range of movies and TV to pick from, it seems like you've got to pick between dozens of expensive services just to watch a single show.

It's not all bad, though – there are actually tons of 100% legal free streaming sites for movies and TV out there if you know where to find them. It is worth noting, however, that not all of these free streaming sites are available worldwide, so if you're outside of your home country and want to access the free movies you're used to, you may have to use a VPN .

But, no matter where you are, there are plenty of totally free options. So, if you're wondering how to watch movies free online, all you need to do is take your pick from the following choices.

How to watch movies free anywhere

ExpressVPN logo

Our top-rated VPN for watching geo-blocked content is ExpressVPN . Not only does it provide excellent privacy and security, but it's the most reliable for unblocking just about any streaming site, including paid-for options like Netflix and Prime. Now, TechRadar readers can claim three months free on a 12-month plan – and you'll also be covered by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Which free streaming site you choose to use is likely to be decided by where you live – for example, Americans will be more likely to head over to Peacock than BBC iPlayer.

However, if you're outside your home country and want to watch movies free on the sites you're used to, you'll likely notice that the website is blocked. There's a quick and easy way to get around that, though.

Using a streaming VPN is the simplest way of getting access to your favorite sites when you're abroad. All you need to do is select a server in a country of your choice, connect, and start watching.

We recommend ExpressVPN thanks to its unparalleled streaming performance and wide range of locations, and it's great for accessing the free streaming sites below.

How to watch movies free: BBC iPlayer

1. BBC iPlayer

When it comes to a free streaming services, BBC iPlayer is arguably the very best available. With a huge repository of BBC content and an ever-changing catalogue of both modern and classic movies, whatever your mood there's bound to be something that will take your fancy.

Series currently on offer are the excellent I May Destroy You, the Ridley Scott-produced The Terror, and the only motoring show worth watching, Top Gear. Plus, there's also a wide range of kids TV, and even live streams of the terrestrial BBC channels.

Movies on offer are also strong – we've seen the likes of Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Dunkirk and loads more out-and-out classics on there in recent times. The best ones tend to leave after 30 days, but there's usually something pretty great ready to replace them.

There's often a bit of a Brit slant to the content, but if you want to watch movies free online, it's a great place to start. Do note, though, that viewers should be licence fee payers to watch.

ExpressVPN came out on top

BBC iPlayer is only available in the UK, so if you're currently out of the country, you'll need to use an iPlayer VPN – and in our testing, ExpressVPN came out on top . Sign up now to claim your three free months.

How to watch movies free: Peacock logo

It probably comes as no surprise, but NBC's Peacock is one of the best free streaming sites around. Launched in 2020, Peacock gained huge popularity for having a comprehensive ad-supported free library, and it's now one of the most-watched streaming services in the US.

An obvious draw is the most-streamed series of all time, The Office, but Peacock also delivers with a huge range of feature-length classics.

In Bruges, Drag Me To Hell, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Deer Hunter, the first three Harry Potter movies... All of these and more are available for absolutely free, and while there's an even greater selection if you sign up to the premium plan , there's plenty to go around.

Again, though, if you're currently outside the US you won't be able to watch Peacock. But if you use one of our best Peacock VPN choices, you'll be able to change your location back home and watch free movies anywhere.

How to watch movies free: Sling TV

3. Sling TV Free

While Sling might be best known for its great-value paid plans, it also offers a free tier that's competitive with the very best .

Unlike many of the US services on this list, Sling offers free streams of live news (something those in the UK will take for granted), so if you want to stay up to date on what's happening in the world, you might want to head over to Sling.

What's more, there's absolutely no sign up required – all you need to do is head over to the site and start watching. You'll get over 5000 episodes of favorites such as Hell's Kitchen, the original Johnny Depp-starring 21 Jump Street, select episodes of Rick and Morty, and all 11 seasons of the original UK Shameless.

Of course, you can upgrade and fully cut the cord for just $25 a month – but if you're just a casual watcher, you may well get away with going for the free plan.

Again, though, if you're outside the US, you'll need to use a VPN to get access to all this great free content.

How to watch movies free: All4 Logo

Second only to BBC iPlayer when it comes to British streaming, All4 is Channel 4's online streaming service. Known for being a little 'edgier' than the BBC, Channel 4 produces some of the most compelling TV in the UK – and it's all free.

Plus, thanks to its close links with Film4, All4 has a huge range of both blockbuster and more arthouse feature-length content.

Much like iPlayer, the films available come and go. But at the time of writing movies to check out included Irvine Welsh adaptations Trainspotting and The Acid House; Nico, 1998, which details the later years of the singer's life (well after her time with the Velvet Underground); entertaining Danny Dyer flick The Business; and historical drama Peterloo.

Like iPlayer, All4 is only available to those in the UK, so if you're out of the country, a VPN will be necessary to watch .

How to watch movies free: Tubi logo

With a crisp, clean interface and absolutely no sign-up required, Tubi is a great place to watch movies free online.

With some surprisingly big features like World War Z, Madagascar, Interstellar, Battle Royale, and Ghost in the Shell to name a few, there might be more on offer here than you bargained for.

The full Tubi catalogue is only available to those in the US, so if you fancy exploring what's on offer, you need to change your location to the states with a VPN.

How to watch movies free: Crackle logo

Previously part of Sony and now owned by Chicken Soup for the Soul, Crackle is a slightly less-known free streaming service that boasts a host of excellent free movies and TV shows.

With A-list movies like The Hurt Locker and The Grudge, and some somewhat lower-brow offerings like Big Ass Spider!, the selection is somewhat hit and miss, but it's definitely worth a browse to see what's on offer.

Available in the US, Canada, and a variety of Latin American countries, Crackle has good coverage. However, if you're out of the Americas in Europe or elsewhere, you'll need to fire up your VPN.

If you're looking to save money while still having something new to watch every night, then free streaming services will be perfect for you.

Movie, TV and sports fans will quickly find that signing up for the best streaming services can quickly get prohibitively expensive; even if you make use of streaming deals and offers like the Apple TV Plus free trials , you'll quickly find your wallet or purse hurting if you sign up for too many.

These free movie and TV streaming services are particularly great for watching classic, indie or older movies and TV shows that aren't on the big streaming services, and also new indie films that may not even release in theaters. In other words, they're great for people who don't want to stick to the modern release schedule.

Here at What to Watch, we love free TV streaming services, as a way to catch up on decades-old classics or just find somewhere new. So to help you on your quest to save money while streaming, we've compiled this list of our go-to options, so you can dive into the library and find something to watch.

You won't have to pay a penny to watch from these sites: no subscription fees, no money spent on specific hardware and no streamers which require you to pay a license fee. All you need to pay for is whatever screen you'll use, your internet plan and the popcorn. They're all legal too: you 'pay your way' by watching ads before and during the video, as these are 'FAST' or 'Free Ad-Supported Television' plans.

We've omitted UK broadcaster sites because you have to pay a license fee to watch legally, so they're not free. Plus, this is for movies, TV shows and documentaries, so we're not going to include websites like TikTok, YouTube or Instagram.

Countries: US & UK | Content : some live channels and many movies and box sets| Best for: binge-able TV and originals

Amazon Freevee logo

Prime Video's free sibling is Freevee , formerly IMDb TV, is the best free streaming service right now — its library is so large that you'd be forgiven for thinking that it's not actually free! Here at What to Watch we love the platform for its movies since there are barely any ads interrupting the story (compared to some rivals).

Freevee has loads of movies, including older classics, modern dramas and loads of gory horror and sci-fi. It's also great for factual entertainment and documentaries.

However, Freevee's strongest suit is in its TV, as it's chock-full of box sets for some of the biggest and most beloved TV shows of all time. The exact library depends on your region but expect binge-worthy comedies, nail-biting dramas and plenty of reality TV.

Unlike many alternatives on this list, Freevee also puts out original content, thanks to its Amazon money. The new Neighbours reboot, Bosch: Legacy, Jury Duty and Judy Justice are some noteworthy picks to catch.

2. Pluto TV

  • Countries: US & UK | Content: live & on-demand movies, TV shows and reality | Best for: recent and classic TV

Pluto Logo

Pluto TV, owned by Paramount, is a fantastic free streaming service with a large library and many live TV channels.

That's because, unlike many of the entries lower on this list, its library includes a huge number of modern TV shows and movies, so you can use it to stream videos made since the turn of the century. There are older movies and shows too of course.

Pluto has plenty of live TV channels across a wide variety of genres and also many dedicated to airing specific shows, with non-stop episodes of Judge Judy, various CSI versions, Unsolved Mysteries, Baywatch, Mission Impossible Justified and more.

There's no denying that Pluto is better for TV, and while there are a few movies too, there are better options in this regard.

Find Pluto TV here .

  • Countries: US | Content: live & on-demand movies and TV shows| Best for: horror movies

Tubi logo

Tubi is the biggest free streaming service in the US, though unfortunately, it isn't available outside of the country.

We love Tubi because it's a great place to find modern movies to watch, with the streamer beloved particularly by horror fans for its huge selection (which includes a huge number of original movies).

This isn't just a streaming service for movies though, with a decent selection of TV series available. There are lots of documentaries offered too, with many true crime, celebrity and investigative pieces.

Find Tubi here .

  • Countries: US & UK | Content: live & on-demand movies and TV shows, plus streaming service directory| Best for: movies

The Plex TV logo on a black background.

If movies are your thing, Plex is a fantastic streamer to check out — as long as you make sure to familiarize yourself with how it works.

You see, Plex is both a library and a directory. If you search for a movie in its library, you'll be able to find it, and if it's not on Plex, the service will let you know how you can watch it. This is useful, but it's easy to mistakenly think something's on Plex when it isn't.

One you've found your way to the free movies & TV part of the website, you'll likely be pleasantly surprised by the number of videos on the site, particularly movies. Plex has lots of options including modern and mid-00s hits, but lots of older classics too, from directors like Sergio Leone, Akira Kurosawa, John Carpenter Oliver Stone and Darren Aronofsky.

There are a fair few TV shows, though not quite as many as on other services, and Plex is definitely better for movies. You can also find some live TV channels, mainly ones dedicated to specific shows like 21 Jump Street, Mythbusters, Deal or No Deal or The Ed Sullivan Show .

Find Plex TV here .

5. The Roku Channel

  • Countries: US & UK | Content: movies, TV shows & originals | Best for: original programming

The Roku Channel logo

The Roku Channel is a bit different from the other free streaming services on this list, in a way that might call the 'free' part into question a little bit.

That's the fact that you need to own a Roku-enabled streaming device or TV in order to watch The Roku Channel, and not every TV will work with it (in the UK, Sky Q and Now TV also offer it). But if you do have access to TRC, it's one of the best free streaming services out there.

The Roku Channel has a big list of movies, TV shows and documentaries, including older ones and more modern additions. But the real draw is the Roku Originals, which include musical biopic Weird: The Al Yankovic Story , Die Hart 2 and Toast of Tinseltown . Roku is quickly gaining a name for itself with its originals, that can only be watched on The Roku Channel.

  • Countries: US & UK | Content: classic movies | Best for: classic movies

The Classix logo on a gray background.

Classix does what it says on the tin: it's for classics.

In the Classix library you'll find plenty of classic movies, and we're talking about 'classics' from yesteryear, so expect plenty of black-and-white and much older pictures. It's great for people looking to catch up on their movie history.

There are a few stipulations though. Firstly, Classix isn't available on most devices, as it's only on Apple TV, iPhones or iPads, severely reducing the number of people who can access it.

Secondly, while Classix is completely free, there is a paid tier. This costs $7.99 or equivalent, and it's a one-off payment instead of a subscription. After this you get access to a much wider library of movies, and also some TV shows and live TV channels. Plus, you have to pay if you want to download to watch on the go.

So Classix isn't for everyone, hence its placement this low on our list, but if you tick all the boxes then Classix could be great.

Find Classix here.

7. Rakuten TV

  • Countries: UK | Content: loads of movies, as well as live TV and some TV shows | Best for: recent movies

The Rakuten TV logo on a black background.

Rakuten TV is one of the various entertainment offerings from Japanese tech giant Rakuten, and it's a decent alternative to Tubi in the UK.

The streaming service has plenty of movies, with lots of period, war and action films that you can watch for free, including a surprising number of Sly Stallone ones. It also offers select TV box sets, with a good few reality ones in particular.

There are a few live TV channels on Rakuten, mainly themed ones like 'Movies', 'Mystery TV' or 'Tennis Channel'. That's not as many as some of the rival services, but nothing to turn your nose up at.

You can actually use Rakuten TV to rent or buy movies as well, including ones straight out of the cinema, but if you make sure to find the 'Free' category you'll find a huge number of blockbuster movies that don't cost anything.

Find Rakuten TV here.

We've listed some of the biggest and best free streaming services above, but there are a few other honorable mentions that we should make. Here are some others you might want to check out if the above aren't right for you, or if you have a particular interest:

  • Crunchyroll : a dedicated home for countless hours of anime, Crunchyroll is beloved by fans of this animation genre. Its free selection is a little limited though.
  • YouTube : in the US, YouTube Movies & TV is an official account that lets you watch movies. Most are paid but there are a select few ad-supported ones that you can hunt around for.
  • Runtime TV : Another free ad-supported service, Runtime is full of what we'll affectionally dub 'b-movies'. Expect lots of low-budget horror, action and comedy from around the world, with few big titles but potential undiscovered gems.
  • Crackle :  This long-standing streamer has a changeable but reliable selection of movies and TV shows, as well as a few exclusives.
  • Popcornflix: This final pick has a few big movies on it and lots of smaller ones too, so it's a fine back-up plan if you can't find something to watch.

6 Ways to Stream Movies Legally for Free in the UK

Posted by Andy Betts on 2020‑03‑27 18:23 in Features

Free Movie Streaming Sites

If you've got some time on your hands and need to keep yourself entertained, you might be considering signing up to a few premium streaming services. But did you know that it's also possible to watch free movies online in the UK, legally?

Let's take a look at the best free streaming services, which you can watch in mobile apps, on streaming sticks, or on your smart TV.

If you haven't used Channel 4's All 4 streaming app lately you might have missed the fact that they added Film4 to the mix last November. The ad-supported service has up to around 30 movies available at any time, and the selection is refreshed frequently. There's plenty of great stuff on there for all tastes, whether you like Brit comedies, Hollywood blockbusters, or indie flicks.

2. BBC iPlayer

Like All 4, iPlayer also has a small selection of movies that is easily overlooked. Go beyond the boxsets of Line of Duty and Last Tango in Halifax , and you'll find 20 or more films that have recently been broadcast on the Beeb, across all genres. Don't bookmark them to watch later, because some only stay up for a week or so. But do make sure to check back regularly to see what else has been added.

A few months ago My5, the streaming app for Channel 5, added a bunch of extra channels from the American internet TV service Pluto TV. Among them is Pluto TV Movies, which has over 200 films for you to watch. Many of them, it has to be said, are of the straight-to-DVD variety. But if there was ever a time to indulge in the dubious pleasures of films like Mega Shark vs Crocosaurus it's surely now!

4. Rakuten TV

Rakuten TV is available through a large number of smart TVs from the likes of LG, Samsung and Sony, as well as on smartphones and tablets, consoles, or in your web browser. The main part of the service lets you rent new releases, or buy and keep your favourites, while there's also more than 100 free movies for you to enjoy, just with the odd ad break here and there. It's a reasonable selection: not up to Netflix standards, obviously, but most people should be able to find something to keep them amused (and there's some free TV stuff for kids as well).

YouTube is a pretty good source for movie streaming. Some films are there legally, others aren't (and tend to be removed quite quickly). Either way, finding them is the hardest part. Using the search filters can help, although you still need to be prepared to work your way through plenty of spam and junk. Thankfully, there are a few channels that share fully licensed movies, including Artflix and Viewster , as well as some third party websites that collate them for you, including:

  • MoviesFoundOnline.com : A selection of random movies on YouTube, sorted by genre
  • TopDocumentaryFilms.com : Feature length documentaries on every subject
  • ClassicCinemaOnline.com : Classic Hollywood films, mostly from the 40s and 50s

6. Free Trials of Premium Services

Finally, don't forget to make sure you've used up all the available free trials from the big premium streaming services. Netflix is the obvious place to start. You get a 30-day trial, and if you've used the service before you can sign up again as long as you've got a different email address and payment card.

Amazon Prime Video also gives you a 30-day trial, and has lots of add-on subscription channels that also throw in a week for free. A NOW TV Movie Pass , with over a thousand films from Sky Cinema, gives you seven days for free, as does the new Disney+ , which is the place to go for Pixar, Star Wars and Marvel movies.

Or if your taste is a little less mainstream, check out BFI Player for a 14-day trial as well as the hand-curated service MUBI , which gives you three months of streaming for the almost-free price of £1.

How to watch movies for free: seven top tips

From streaming services such as the BBC iPlayer to Amazon Prime trials and cinema film previews

1. Keep checking the iPlayer, ITVX, etc

For smart TV and laptop watchers, arguably the first port of call should be the main on-demand services such as BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4 (formerly known as All 4), My5 and STV Player. Films sometimes come and go quite quickly, so it’s worth getting into the habit of checking regularly. At the time of writing, the iPlayer was offering Oscar winners The Theory of Everything, the Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga version of A Star Is Born, and Sound of Metal.

From 1 March, ITVX is showcasing a selection of Oscar-winning and nominated films , including No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Drive and Dogtooth (the latter an early film by the Poor Things director, Yorgos Lanthimos), plus all-time classics such as The Apartment, Vertigo and Rear Window.

These services typically require you to register and sign in to use them. And, of course, with all the above bar the iPlayer, there are adverts during the films, unless you opt to pay and see fewer ads or go ad-free.

2. Find new channels

Scroll through your TV’s main menu and you will probably find channels you have never watched or even heard of. For example, Amazon Freevee is a free, ad-supported streaming service boasting thousands of shows and movies, including A Dangerous Method, starring Keira Knightley, and Darren Aronofsky’s acclaimed drama Requiem for a Dream.

Plex is a free-with-ads service with an excellent range of old and new movies. It boasts a particularly good selection of foreign, arthouse and midnight movie gems, including Japanese classics by Akira Kurosawa, Yasujirō Ozu and Kenji Mizoguchi, several movies by the Italian horror maestro Dario Argento, and a stack of Bollywood films.

Other channels include the vintage movie specialist Talking Pictures TV , Great! Movies , LEGEND , Rakuten TV , Pluto TV and wedotv .

How and where to watch these services will vary, depending on your kit and your preference – it might be via Freeview, Sky or Virgin Media, or via an app on your TV or device, or via another platform. In most cases there is a website that spells this out.

Keira Knightley and Michael Fassbender in A Dangerous Method.

3. Use free trials

Many of the streaming services offer free trials, so you could sign up, watch a lot of films and then cancel before you are rolled over into a paid-for subscription (read the terms and conditions very carefully to make sure you are not caught out).

Apple TV+ is running a free seven-day trial, giving you the chance to watch Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon, which has been nominated for 10 Oscars. Its other movies include the 2021 film Coda, winner of three Oscars including Best Picture.

Amazon Prime has a 30-day free trial, allowing you to check out new movies such as Saltburn and Foe, a sci-fi drama starring Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan. Students can get six months’ free membership when signing up to Prime Student.

Other services offering seven-day free trials include Paramount+ (its movies include the Tom Cruise blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick and Babylon, starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie), Lionsgate+, StudioCanal Presents, MGM, and four that are particularly good for arthouse fare and classics: BFI Player, Curzon, Mubi and the eastern Europe specialist Klassiki.

Netflix does not currently offer free trials.

4. Beware of illegal sites

“Be careful when you search online – many websites will send you to dubious destinations that not only stream illegal content but also slam you with spammy warnings and pop-up windows,” says Or Goren at the website Cord Busters . He says that in general, if it looks too good to be true – for example, the most recent Hollywood hits being offered “for free” – then “there’s something fishy”.

Last autumn Guardian Money highlighted how people in the UK who illegally stream movies , sport and TV shows online were being warned they risked having their bank accounts emptied or their identities stolen. The BeStreamWise campaign also points out that people who watch pirated content can potentially be prosecuted.

5. Scan listings

If you want to watch films for free on the big screen, event listings websites can help. For example, Eventbrite lists free screenings around the country, which often take place at libraries and community spaces.

In north London, Wood Green library is showing Citizen Kane on 15 February, The Book Thief on 22 February and Vertigo on 29 February, while Laxton Victory Hall in Laxton, East Yorkshire, has a “romcom movie night” (film TBC) on 23 FebruaryThe Plaza cinema in the Liverpool suburb of Waterloo also runs community screenings , with the next ones scheduled for 6 February and 5 March.

Orson Welles in Citizen Kane.

Museums and galleries sometimes host free film screenings. BFI Southbank in London has the Mediatheque , where you can explore the riches of the British Film Institute’s national archive for free, including classics such as Brief Encounter and Withnail and I.

Some cinemas organise free screenings for certain groups. For example, BFI Southbank has screenings that are free for the over-60s . The next ones are the Oscar-nominated 2016 romantic drama Loving on 5 February and the 1992 drama Blue Black Permanent on 1 March.

6. Join a club

A number of services discreetly offer free and cheap tickets to movies and other events, often at short notice – it’s typically about filling empty seats and building a buzz. One of the best for movies is ShowFilmFirst , which occasionally offers free tickets to previews, director Q&As and so on (you have to apply to be a member, and it will let you know if you’ve been successful).

Also check out Free Movies UK (FMUK), a non-profit, free-membership organisation and web forum dedicated to getting its members “as many free cinema tickets [typically provided by film distributors] as possible”.

7. More freebies on the way

A new BFI-supported multi-year project called Escapes will offer free film screenings in cinemas to almost 1 million people across the UK. Beginning in early 2024, Escapes will offer regular free screenings at up to 400 cinemas and aim “to grow cinema engagement across the UK and break down primary barriers to cinema-going among audiences, particularly those excluded by price”. More details should emerge soon – keep an eye on the website, escapetothecinema.co.uk .

Most people would probably prefer not to think about how much they spend per month, let alone per year, on video streaming services . Between watching the latest on-demand originals, popular movies, and live-streaming channels, you can easily end up paying $50 or more per month. However, you can save on costs by using one or several free video streaming options.

Note that these free options aren't as sophisticated as paid streaming services, nor do they have as much or as high-quality content. You can think of these as complementary services to cover any gaps in your entertainment needs. You can get by just watching free services if that's what fits your budget , but you should expect some compromises.

With that in mind, these are our favorite free video streaming services, along with advice on the content and features you can expect to get with them.

Deeper dive: our top tested picks, why we picked it.

Tubi is a free video streaming service with approximately 50,000 movies and TV shows. Its catalog includes popular films such as Brightburn , The Matrix , and Rush Hour . Notable TV entries include Degrassi: The Next Generation , Everybody Hates Chris , Hell's Kitchen , and Naruto .

Who It’s For

Tubi is for people who want a free service that doesn't feel cheap. The service's web interface and mobile apps have clean designs that organize everything into descriptive categories. Tubi's movie and TV catalogs are especially impressive—if you're OK with ads.

  • Extensive library of movies and shows
  • Modern apps and interfaces
  • Supports watchlists
  • Parental control features
  • 720p streaming resolution cap
  • Lacks an ad-free option

Kanopy offers free educational viewing materials to the groups who need it most. If you have a library card or a current university email address, you can access Kanopy without paying a cent. Kanopy also supports an unlimited number of simultaneous streams per account, and is ad-free.

Kanopy’s “thoughtful entertainment” appeals to people who want high-quality films and documentaries, for adults and children alike. Its partners include A24, Bleecker Street, HBO Documentary Films, Paramount, PBS, and Samuel Goldwyn Films.

  • Thousands of on-demand films and shows
  • Free with a library card or university email address
  • Unlimited access to Kanopy Kids content
  • Can create and share/embed clips and playlists
  • No limit on simultaneous streaming from a single account
  • You can only stream a handful of Play Credit titles a month
  • Does not support offline downloads on mobile devices

Crunchyroll’s free offering isn't quite as generous as it used to be, but you can still enjoy anime hits in the ad-supported tier without signing up for a paid account. Most notably, you can watch a rotating "seasonal sampler" that features the first three episodes of new titles.

After absorbing rivals Funimation and VRV, Crunchyroll is the undisputed king of major anime streaming services. Anyone interested in the latest top shows doesn’t have much choice. Fortunately, Crunchyroll is convenient and comprehensive enough to be worthy of its top status.

  • Expansive anime library, including Funimation dubs
  • All tiers support HD streaming
  • Many simulcast shows
  • Some original series
  • Manga and apparel store
  • Offline downloads
  • Free mobile games
  • Some interface clutter
  • Few subtitle options

Plex now has a surprising amount of free on-demand streaming content. The catalog includes Crackle’s full library of movies and TV shows, as well as films from MGM, Warner Bros., and other major studios. Although you can’t download this content to your media server, you don’t need to reserve space for it, either.

Plex isn’t really a video streaming service. It’s software that helps you set up a personal media server so you can easily stream your own content through your own network. That’s very useful and cool, and Plex is great at it. However, make sure you know that’s what you’re getting.

  • Capable free version
  • Intuitive apps on many platforms
  • Growing library of on-demand and preprogrammed video streaming content
  • HTPC support only through forums
  • Limited interface themes
  • Removed features like gaming and podcasts

Vudu has a huge library of mainstream movies and TV shows, and a surprising amount are available to watch for free with minimal ads. If you're willing to pay, you can also purchase and rent even more titles. Useful search features and offline mobile downloads sweeten the deal.

Who It's For

Vudu is for people who want the best of both worlds when it comes to video streaming pricing. It's appealing as a free, ad-supported service, as well as a paid rental service. So you can switch back and forth between the two viewing options whenever you want.

  • Free streaming with ads
  • Lets you rent and purchase movies
  • Useful search filters
  • Offline mobile downloads
  • Select titles in 4K resolution
  • Mediocre interface and video player
  • Virtually no original programming

Previously known as IMDb TV, Freevee is Amazon’s free alternative to Prime Video. You can watch ad-supported versions of popular shows and movies, such as Mad Men and Logan . Freevee also has original shows, including Bosch Legacy and other spin-offs of original Prime Video shows.

Freevee is just one more reason to step into the Amazon ecosystem. When you aren’t buying products or enjoying the company’s other subscription services, you can also watch movies and shows without forking over cash. Even if you don’t eventually sign up for Prime, free entertainment appeals to everyone.

  • Decent movie collection
  • Reliable streaming performance in testing
  • Supports many popular platforms and devices
  • Small selection of original programming
  • Few notable TV shows
  • Disjointed navigation experience on the web

CW Seed offers complete seasons of popular CW shows for free. From 90210 to Krypton to The Game , it’s all there. You just have to watch commercials, as you would with the over-the-air CW.

Who knows what the future holds for the CW network, what with all the breakups and mergers surrounding its corporate parents. In the meantime, CW Seed is a slick free way for you to stream the channel’s enjoyable, teen-friendly lineup.

  • Complete seasons of popular series
  • Available on many different platforms
  • Slick app design
  • Many ads per episode
  • Cannot download videos for offline viewing
  • Small library
  • Only available in the US

Midnight Pulp offers an awesome and eclectic collection of cult movies and shows. You may not want to pay for any of this schlock, but the free, ad-supported tier gives you nearly everything you could ask for from this service.

Midnight Pulp is for genre explorers. Without worrying about potentially wasting money, the service encourages you to hop around its macabre library of exploitation, sci-fi, and horror. You may accidentally wind up watching something that probably shouldn't exist.

  • Hundreds of cult movies and shows
  • Curated collections
  • Few recognizable titles
  • Inconsistent accessibility features
  • Lackluster premium perks

PBS Video gives you free access to PBS content, including on-demand streaming, local broadcasts, and live shows. PBS offers several different streaming services, such as PBS Documentaries and PBS Passport, but this is the only free one.

PBS Video is for people interested in what the public broadcaster has always offered: programming that helps you stay informed about history and current culture. This free gateway to that knowledge only furthers that mission. Note, however, that some content is locked behind paid tiers.

  • Varied on-demand streaming library
  • Includes access to live streams from local PBS broadcast stations
  • Paid PBS Passport subscription required to watch the most popular PBS shows
  • No support for offline downloads on mobile devices
  • Most programming is only available in the US

RetroCrush is a completely free anime streaming service. You can watch everything in its library, and don't have to endure many ads. The flip side is that the small library is limited to older shows and movies, not contemporary content.

Classic anime should be seen as a genre unto itself. Even if you don’t like or keep up with what the kids are into now, anime from twenty or thirty years ago provides a curated nostalgia blast. RetroCrush is for fans who care more about Golgo 13 and Urusei Yatsura than Attack on Titan .

  • Excellent free tier
  • Exclusive retro anime shows and movies
  • 24/7 "live" feed
  • Surprisingly infrequent ads
  • Small library, even at premium tier
  • Lacks community and accessibility features

The Roku Channel delivers free, ad-supported shows, movies, and original material. This includes live TV and the ability to purchase premium paid channels. On mobile, it even turns your phone into a Roku remote.

Countless viewers already use Roku, either as a separate media streaming device or as software built directly into the TV. So why not check out the free content Roku has to offer? The Roku Channel is also for anyone who's wondering where Quibi’s shows ended up, since Roku bought the library from the ill-fated short-form video platform.

  • Original shows
  • Premium channel options
  • Mobile app doubles as a TV remote
  • No ad-free option
  • Library feels random
  • No offline downloads
  • Limited control over video quality

Crackle is a free ad-supported streaming service that focuses on film. Its library features more than 1,000 movies. The TV library is much smaller, around 100 shows, but still covers many genres. There are even some original shows.

Film fans. Crackle has some limitations, like its weak TV lineup and many ads, but its free movie library is worth checking out. Plus, it has reliable streaming performance, which is something you can’t always count on with free services that hide video quality.

  • Decent collection of movies
  • Reliable streaming performance
  • Lots of ads
  • Lackluster web and mobile interfaces
  • Few high-quality shows

Pluto TV is a free, live streaming service. That means you can watch ongoing live broadcasts across more than 250 different channels without paying for cable. Many channels are niche and only marathon, say, one old sitcom. That said, PlutoTV has a lot to choose from, even if you don't subscribe to its premium cable channels.

Pluto TV is great for viewers who want to use internet streaming for a more traditional TV experience. Instead of picking specific on-demand content, just hop between live channels and see where they take you.

  • Wide variety of content
  • Does not require an account
  • Very few traditional cable channels
  • Bare-bones features

Buying Guide: The Best Free Video Streaming Services for 2024

What can you stream for free.

As with paid services, there are two main types of free video streaming services: on-demand and live. Some free options, like PBS Video, offer both content types.

Crackle, CW Seed, IMDb TV, Kanopy, Midnight Pulp, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Tubi all have on-demand movies. Amazon Freevee has the most popular movies of the bunch, while Kanopy and PBS Video distinguish themselves with top-notch documentaries . Serious cinephiles should check out dedicated movie streaming services , such as The Criterion Channel or Mubi . You may be surprised to find that Crackle and Tubi's movie libraries are larger than those of many paid services, but paid services have higher-quality titles. Anecdotally, many of the free services share the same movies, too.

Crackle, CW Seed, IMDb TV, PBS Video, Pluto TV, and Tubi all offer on-demand TV shows. CW Seed, IMDb TV, and PBS Video have the most mainstream shows of this group, however, and you might seriously wonder who watches the programming on these other free services.

Paid video streaming services, such as Max and Paramount+ , use popular current and classic shows to build up their catalogs (often with exclusives), so it makes sense that there aren't many marquee titles for free services to grab. Still, free streaming is becoming an increasingly important part of the streaming landscape .

Crackle and Freevee are unique among free options in that they produce original series. Just don't expect the production value or quality storytelling of Amazon Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel , Netflix's Stranger Things , or Paramount+'s Star Trek: Picard . The Roku Channel also has a surprising amount of original shows it acquired from the defunct Quibi.

PBS Video is the closest thing to a free live TV service of everything we've reviewed here, as it lets you watch a live feed of your local PBS station. Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, and Xumo occupy a weird hybrid space. These services primarily offer continuous streaming channels of preprogrammed clips and commentary, but they do have a select few live news and sports commentary feeds. Meanwhile, free "live TV" offerings on Screambox and Shout Factory TV are basically 24/7 marathons of existing content.

For streaming services that can replace cable, check out our top picks for the category, Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV . You aren't likely to find live coverage of popular sports leagues on the free services, either, so sports fans should consider a paid sports streaming service .

Speaking of YouTube, the popular video platform lets you watch full seasons of select, ad-supported TV shows . Enjoy more than 4,000 episodes of Andromeda , Heartland , and Hell's Kitchen. YouTube has free movies, too, such as Gone in 60 Seconds and Legally Blond e.

Anime streaming services are another subset of free video streaming services. Crunchyroll offers a robust free tier, while RetroCrush is totally free.

Media server applications, such as Plex and Kodi , are free and enable you to stream your own content from a personal or shared server. Plex now includes an on-demand streaming library of movies and shows that you don't need to host (largely because it integrates Crackle's whole library), too.

Of course, you can always fill your time by watching videos on Vimeo , YouTube, and Facebook Watch, as well. And who could forget about video game live streaming services , such as Twitch ?

Is Free Video Streaming Actually Free?

Nothing in life is truly free. Although free video streaming services may not cost money, you are almost certainly paying with the personal data that the services collect. In the case of most free video streaming services, your ad views are what matter. Kanopy is an exception; it doesn't show ads.

The specifics of ad behavior vary across services. For instance, Amazon Freevee, Crackle, and Xumo include markers on the playback interface to show you exactly where to expect ads to play. It's a safe bet that you'll sit through ads about every 10 minutes or so, at least for on-demand content. CW Seed has a particularly bad ad experience; in testing, we had to sit through five ads (each between 15 and 30 seconds long) when streaming a 43-minute episode. Plex does not insert ads into streams, though Crunchyroll, RetroCrush, and Tubi all include ads.

In our experience, it's sometimes possible to get around ads on the services' web versions by using a combination of ad-blocking and privacy-enhancing extensions. However, we've had less luck blocking commercials when using Hulu's ad-supported base tiers. To get rid of ads, you need to pay for a higher tier. Services that don't include ads at all are becoming increasingly rare. Disney+ , Max, Netflix, and Prime Video all now have ad-supported tiers.

Some of the services in this roundup are offered only at the free level, with no option to pay for an upgraded experience. Among those are CW Seed, Crackle, Pluto TV, RetroCrush, The Roku Channel, Tubi, and Xumo. You can still set up an account with those services (except for with CW Seed and Xumo), but doing so does not grant you extra content or remove ads. Instead, accounts generally let you track what you watch and customize other aspects of the experience.

Other free services are more like free samples that lock their full library and features behind a paywall. Crunchyroll and PBS Video offer paid plans that unlock ad-free streams, premium content, and other perks. Plex, too, has a premium tier option, called Plex Pass. This upgraded plan gives you extra library management features but doesn't expand the available on-demand content.

Common Limitations of Free Video Streaming

Don't expect free services to include all the top features that you'd associate with paid services. The most apparent limitation may be the maximum streaming resolution available, with few services supporting full-HD streams. Crunchyroll and Kanopy are the only services that support 1080p streaming at their free tiers. Most other on-demand content on the other services is capped at 720p or lower. For example, many of the popular movies on Tubi are available to stream at about 540p, which is disappointing. That said, the base Netflix plan caps the streaming resolution to SD quality, so subscribers to that plan will see an improvement with free services. Still, most paid services generally provide a better viewing experience. Apple TV+ , for example, supports high-end Dolby audio and video standards, plus 4K streaming.

Most free on-demand services don't support offline downloads on mobile devices, though the paid options of some anime streaming services have this capability. You can sync media offline from your Plex server, with a Plex Pass, but if you already own that media, you can skip Plex altogether and transfer files to your device's local storage.

Kanopy has a limitation that no other streaming service does: It caps the number of titles you can watch each month. Every other streaming service offers unlimited access. Kanopy's restriction at least does not apply to its kid-friendly content.

Free live TV options don't include DVR recording capabilities or storage. You don't have to pay much for these features. Inexpensive options, such as Philo and Sling TV , have DVR and storage capabilities.

Video Streaming Parental Control and Accessibility

A few of the free services include parental control options, though most are extremely limited in terms of functionality. Tubi is unique in that it lets you specify what is allowed by content rating. Others use a simple on or off toggle, or in the case of many anime streaming services, provide an option to filter mature or explicit content. Kanopy includes a dedicated section for kid-friendly content. However, most free services have an implementation problem; there's nothing to prevent your kid from signing up for the service on their own or not using an account at all.

All the free services we've reviewed include Closed Caption (CC) options for most of their content. Amazon Freevee, CW Seed, Crackle, Kanopy, PBS Video, Tubi, The Roku Channel, and Xumo let you customize their subtitles' appearances. We won't get into the heated anime sub vs dub argument here, but after acquiring Funimation's dubbed content Crunchyroll is now the best of all worlds. Amazon Freevee provides limited support for audio descriptions and is the only free service we reviewed that offers this accessibility feature.

Should You Use a Free Streaming Video Service?

If there's something on any of these services that you want to watch, you should take advantage of the fact that they are free. The limited resolution options and ads may diminish the experience a bit, but if you weren't going to pay for the content anyway, that's a fine compromise. You won't find any of the latest releases, either, so it's likely not important to ensure you have the best possible viewing experience.

If you are seeking new shows to binge-watch, you won't find many worthwhile series. As mentioned, originals and popular classic shows are unlikely to leave their content holders' services. As with most things in life, you get what you pay for, or rather don't pay for in this case.

The cord-cutting audience won't likely find a suitable replacement in the free category either, as the majority of actual live content on the free options is from a handful of news networks. Still, if cable's appeal was just to have something on in the background as an audial or visual distraction, then these might fit the bill. For live cable channels and sports, you need to pay up.

Free vs. Paid Video Streaming

You don't have to exclusively use paid or free services. Nor do you have to use the same services every month. You may find that you can get by just fine with one or two paid options, and a free live TV option to fill the void left by cable. Even if you pay for a full-fledged, live TV streaming service (which likely includes a significant amount of on-demand content), you may find that free offerings fill an occasional gap.

Where to watch free films and TV online

Martin Lane Photo

Watching films and TV shows online can be cheap and convenient, but you could be breaking the law if you use dodgy websites. Here's where you can watch TV and films for free.

young-couple-watching-tv

Can you watch free films and TV online?

Yes , hundreds of sites let you download or stream your favourite programmes for little or no charge, so you have plenty of options.

However, many of these sites could be breaking intellectual property laws that protect the media industry from people distributing their work without permission.

Stream a film from an illegal source and you could receive a warning letter from your service provider, and even face your internet speed being clipped or blocked completely.

Is watching free movies or TV online legal?

Films are only protected by copyright for a certain period of time, depending on when and where it was originally published and the country in which you live:

Under  UK copyright law , a film is protected for 70 years from the death of the last surviving director, screenwriter or original musical composer.

Once this period has expired, the film is considered as being in the 'public domain' and can be distributed freely.

As a result, most of the films that can be legally streamed online for free tend to be 'classic movies' that are no longer protected by copyright laws.

If a film or TV show is still protected by copyright, then the website must have permission to distribute it.

GOV.UK's guide to UK copyright law

Where can you stream video online?

If you're struggling to find the movie or TV programme you want to watch online, you can search for it using a search engine like  FindAnyFilm.com , which lists the cheapest places to watch films and TV shows online legally.

This means you can quickly find if there is a free stream available, or if you will have to pay to watch your film online.

The Industry Trust website also includes links to legitimate streaming websites

Other sites to try

There are several legal websites that let you stream series and films for free:

The British Film Institute  offers classic and contemporary global cinema and documentaries, including free films.

YouTube  offers free TV episodes and films, although you'll have to put up with adverts.

Viewster  offers a wide range of free series and films from around the world.

Snag Films  offers a range of free independent films and documentaries.

Internet Archive  offers black and white classic films, and Westerns.

Here are the best ways to watch TV and films for less

TV on demand

One of the best and easiest ways to watch TV and films online for free is to use the on demand services run by the major UK TV channels.

Each allows you to stream copyright protected content for free without breaking the law.

However, the main catch with TV on demand services is that movies and shows are only available for a limited time after their original broadcast.

BBC iPlayer

The most well known catch up TV service,  BBC iPlayer  allows you to catch up on a variety of TV shows and films previously broadcast on any of the freeview BBC channels.

It also has a series catch up feature, which means you can watch all the previous episodes of some TV shows online for free.

BBC iPlayer is funded through the TV licence, so you will need a valid licence to stream shows or films.

ITV Player, 4OD & Demand Five

ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 all operate catch up TV services which can be viewed for free online.

The main difference between the other TV on demand services and BBC iPlayer is that they are partially funded by advertisements, embedded in the programmes just like the TV channels themselves.

Channel 4's On Demand service

Channel 5's Demand 5 service

Pay for sites

If you cannot find the film or TV show you want to watch or would like to choose from a more extensive list, then you may need to pay to view it online.

Many pay to view sites also offer free trials or welcome credits, so you may be able to watch for free and then cancel before having to pay a subscription fee.

Amazon Instant Video

Amazon's Instant Video  service allows you to pay to rent or buy thousands of TV shows and films online.

Alternatively, an Amazon Prime membership includes more than 15,000 TV episodes and movies as part of the annual subscription.

  • Is Amazon Prime worth it?

Netflix  also offers a wide range of films and television programmes available to stream if you pay a monthly subscription.

NOW TV  offers thousands of movies and TV shows that you can stream on your laptop, TV, tablet, phone or console.

You can pay a monthly subscription to watch sports, movies or entertainment.

Watching free movies online is a convenient and frugal way to see the films you love right from the comfort of your own home. Yes, there are plenty of sites where you can get movies "for free" but I've taken the time to confirm that the ones listed below, although ad-supported, are clean from viruses and, importantly, 100% legal to use .

Our Top Picks

Best Overall: Tubi

Tubi has thousands of free movies and shows, including big titles and a kid-friendly area.

Best for User Feedback: YouTube

Among the millions of videos on YouTube are free movies with ads, curated by YouTube staff.

Best for Popular Titles: Freevee

Amazon's free movie streaming service includes tons of well-known films.

Best for a TV Experience: Pluto TV

It's like cable TV, but totally free. Watch on-demand movies and TV, plus live videos 24/7.

Best for High-Quality Movies: Fandango at Home

Fandango at Home's high-def movies are organized into unique sections like Blast From the Past, Hidden Gems, and Big Time Movie Stars.

Best for a Variety of Movies: Popcornflix

Jump right into watching free movies on your TV, phone, or computer without even setting up an account.

Best for Finding Movies Around the Web: Yidio

Yidio doesn't host any content, but it has a robust search feature that finds where you can watch films and shows for free online.

There's a huge variety of freely available movies on these sites, from comedies and dramas to horror and action films. There are movies from big-name studios, but also many older and independent movies that you'll love to watch over and over again. Just be sure you have the best TV you can to ensure a great viewing experience.

I spend some time each month looking for the best free movie sites on the internet. This list was last updated in April to confirm that they still work, are still free, and are still worth your time.

Most of these sites have a mobile app for watching their movies. Take a look at our list of the best free apps for streaming movies so you can take the films with you wherever you go.

High quality, popular movies.

Lots of categories.

Subtitles can be enabled for most movies.

Has a section just for kids.

You don't need to log in to start watching.

Genre categories don't separate movies from shows.

You don't want to miss the thousands of free movies and TV shows you can stream right now at Tubi.

I like to visit the Leaving Soon page to catch freebies before they start to cost somewhere else, but my favorite part of this website for inspiration is Trending Now — I often have no clue what I'm in the mood for, so to see what everyone else is watching right now is awesome.

For example, a few of the more popular titles people have been streaming over the last month include Van Wilder, Never Back Down, The Tuche Family, Black Mountain Side, Barbecue, and The New Adventures of Aladdin.

There are dozens of other genres and collections to pick from, too, like exclusives in Only Free on Tubi , and Black Cinema, Foreign Films, Based on a Book, Highly Rated on Rotten Tomatoes, and Cult Classics. There's also a Spanish section and live TV.

Tubi Kids is a section of this site perfect for streaming just kid-related films. It's available from the top of the website and has categories just for preschoolers and other kids, including Toon TV, LEGO, Animé, and Friendly Monsters films. There are also parental controls you can set through the normal website.

You don't even need a user account to watch this stuff. Just follow this link below, click something you're interested in, and enjoy!

Movies are rated by real viewers.

You can leave comments.

Single, easy-to-scroll-through list.

Most movies have subtitles.

No ads for Premium subscribers.

Many aren't in HD.

Relatively few genres.

No easy search tool for just the free movies.

I was shocked the first time I found out YouTube has free movies . And no, these aren't poorly filmed videos without subtitles that were uploaded by someone random. I mean proper, full-length, totally legal movies, uploaded and managed by YouTube.

Recently, I was able to watch Proximity and Twilight ; both included captions and were available in 1080p. Here are some other examples of free films I saw listed on YouTube this past month: The Godfather, Tremors, The Rookie, Ava, and 17 Again.

Something you can't get with YouTube, but that is supported by most of these movie sites, is the ability to search through just the free titles. However, here's a trick that has saved me loads of time: Open the full list of movies and use your browser's Find function to search by year, genre, or title.

YouTube's curated list (the link below) is the best way to find all their new and popular free movies. Some companies, like Cineverse , list movies in their own profile.

Great collection of newer free films and shows.

Browsing for movies is easy.

Includes original videos.

Locate movies with subtitles in your language.

Uncluttered video player.

User account required.

Most in-video ads are long.

Unhelpful search tool.

For US users only.

Freevee (formerly IMDb TV) is Amazon's collection of free movies. I use this a lot from my TV, but it's just as easily accessible from their website or mobile app. Everything I watch here is easy to find and seems to be high-quality.

Something I like about this site is how the genres and movie collections are organized. For example, if I'm looking through the most popular movies or recently added lists, I can filter by genre and/or subtitle language to make sure I find a movie that's a good fit for me.

The video player lets you turn on subtitles, adjust the way the captions show up on the screen, change the video quality, and go into full-screen mode.

Here are some of the most popular movies you can watch at Freevee: Fantastic Journey to Oz, All Saints, Space Explorers, Air Force 2, A Nanny's Revenge , and Emma.

Has the same feel as a TV's channel guide.

Includes thousands of on-demand movies.

Streams TV shows, news, music, and more.

No user account necessary.

Has only a dozen or so channels for just movies.

Live-streamed movies can't be watched again on demand.

There's always a video playing; you can mute, but not stop it.

Pluto TV is the closest thing I've found to free cable TV. It's owned by Paramount and fully supported by ads, so there's no worry that you might accidentally buy something.

My biggest joy about using this service is that I can just turn it on and let it play. There are hundreds of live channels, so some of them feature news, reality TV, or game shows, but there are also some with full-length movies.

Not everything is live, though, which is good. If I'm in the mood for something specific, I can look through thousands of movies and TV shows that are available on demand.

The unique categories for their on-demand films are a huge plus because most movie sites just stick to the traditional few genres. Examples include Hollywood Icons, Goofus and Goofus, Black Cinema, '90s Throwback , and Cult Films.

These are some of the most-watched movies on Pluto TV this last month: Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, Norbit, The Quiet Man, Tommy Boy, She's the Man, Crawl, and The Truman Show.

In my experience, running Pluto TV through a TV makes it easier to use because the always-on video player gets in the way on smaller screens. But, there is a mobile app and a desktop player if you'd rather go that route.

Fandango at Home

Lots of high quality movies.

Several useful ways to find just the free movies.

Most are popular and well known, and include subtitles.

Films can be filtered and sorted in a number of ways.

Also supports buying and renting movies.

Some movies here cost.

You must log in (it's free).

There are thousands of movies on Fandango at Home (formerly Vudu) that you can watch right now. All you have to do is put up with a few commercials.

It's a great movie site whether you do or don't have an idea about what you want to watch. Films can be filtered by genre, and you can browse by most-watched or release date. All the basic genres are available: action, comedy, crime, romance, and a few others.

While it's true that the genres aren't interesting, Fandango at Home makes up for it with their curated lists. Check these out: Big Time Movie Stars , Critically Acclaimed , Hidden Gems , and Most Watched Movies . There are a few hundred videos in each section.

Something unique about this site is that not only does it let you look through the newest releases, but you can do so on a single page for every genre. Some examples of 2024 titles include Offworld: Alien Planet, Calber Island, Much Ado, Live Hard, Lola, Me & Will , and Mary Mary .

One great thing about Fandango at Home's movies is that some of them are in 1080p, so you don't have to sacrifice quality just to watch some free movies.

Once you settle on something to watch, you might be given the option to buy or rent it, but so long as you find it through one of the free pages, there will be a button you can use to stream the movie without paying. You can even watch movies still in theaters .

Popcornflix

Includes subtitles.

Has a one-page list of every movie available.

'Continue watching' section.

Can't sort by date or popularity.

Strange site navigation.

Popcornflix is another great place to watch free movies online. Their constant flow of new titles from Screen Media Ventures means they have lots of movies being added all the time.

Right off the bat, I appreciate that I don't need an account to use it. I also like that resume playback is supported so I can pause and watch the rest of the movie later.

However, there are a few things I don't like. While the website is definitely very modern-looking, it's not super user-friendly. Along that same line, I would love to have sorting options within each genre list because it's way more fun to see which documentaries, for example, were added recently so I'm not scrolling over all the same movies I always see.

There are several hundred movies here that include comedy, drama, horror, action, romance, family, documentary movies, and foreign films. They also feature web and film school originals and list some titles by a common theme. I've seen Disaster Movie Madness, Edgy Comedies, Behind Bars, Space Invaders, Pulse-Pounding Thrills , and Fear Factory .

Makes it easy to find free movies around the web.

Lots of unique filtering options.

Sort by popularity and date added.

Can be helpful for renting and buying, too.

Films are streamed through other sites.

Incorrectly labels some paid movies as free.

Shows the wrong synopsis and photo for some films.

I'm so happy I stumbled on Yidio years ago! It's like a search engine for all these other movie sites. It's incredibly handy because it shows where on the internet a movie is available for free.

A search box would be enough, but Yidio goes above and beyond with lots of other sorting and filtering options. These include MPAA rating, decade, genre, IMDb score, and others. Just fill out any of that information to get a list you can comb through, with links to free movie sites.

For example, I asked Yidio to find me free animation movies released since 2020 and to sort the list by IMDb rating. The top several results provided links to watch those films on Tubi, Roku, Pluto TV, and other free streaming sites.

This isn't a perfect service, but it works great nearly every time I use it.

Most if not all movies have subtitles.

Doesn't require a user account.

Several ways to browse the films.

Create a queue for easy passive watching.

Mostly uninteresting genres.

Lists shows alongside the movies.

Huge lists of videos that can't be sorted.

Plex is an interesting service because it's actually a much bigger package than it might seem at first. In addition to its massive collection of free full-length movies and TV shows, Plex also has live TV and associated software that serves as a really cool at-home media server .

Currently, there are tens of thousands of free movies and shows here. They're sectioned off in traditional genres like action and crime, but you can also browse by actor or channel. Plex has its own unique collections, too, including Based On a True Story, Til Death Do Us Part, Oh-My-Godzilla, Cheap Thrills, Midnight Movies, and Most Woof-listed .

On a movie's watch page are similar titles and additional details that help build a total picture of the film, like the full cast list, reviews, and trailers. I love this because it makes it easy to find other movies on Plex with the same stars.

See which movies on Plex are leaving soon to catch them before they go! Plex's Most Popular page lists these titles and more: Lord of War, Movie 43, The Impossible, To Kill a Mockingbird, and Knowing.

If you can't find what you want on Plex, the title you're interested in might still show up in the results, and you'll be given links to places you can buy/rent it (sort of like Yidio, listed above).

You don't need a user account.

Also has TV shows.

Save movies to a 'Watch Later' list.

Includes movie trailers.

The ads help fund the project and filmmakers.

Can't sort or filter any genre list.

Really distracting ads.

No age verification for NC-17 films.

Filmzie is built for streaming movies from independent filmmakers and both small and large studios. The site and app are well-designed, and there are plenty of great titles to stream.

Here are some collections I've seen here that are rare to find on a movie site: Directed by Women, Asia's Top Cinema, Cuddle-Up Comedies , and Independent Cinema .

Of course, over 20 traditional genres, like drama and thriller, are also available. Trending, new, and most-watched movies each have their own section as well.

Filmzie does a great job organizing its movies. This is the main reason I use it. That, and there are so many videos here that I have never even heard of, so it's the perfect place to find something brand new.

Some of this site's most-watched movies are The Wonderpill, The Hard Ride, and The Maid. Some trending titles over this last month include 5 Shells, In Tranzit , and Lady Chatterley's Lover.

I've used the website and the mobile app, and both work more or less the same as these other movie sites.

The Roku Channel

Provides high quality movies.

Includes newer films.

Works on computers, mobile devices, and TVs.

Offers customizable captions.

No user account needed.

Can't filter or sort any genre list.

Doesn't separate movies from shows in category lists.

Lists paid videos next to free ones.

You might already know about Roku's free movies if you have a Roku TV or streaming player. But even if you don't, you can still watch all the same free movies, TV shows, and live TV from a computer, phone, or tablet.

There are some ads in these movies, but the trade-off is high-quality videos and well-known movies.

On the home page are handy categories I have yet to find on another free movie site. They often change, but some that I've seen include Fools in Love, UFO Phenomenon, Teen Dramas, Reality Romance, Undercover Agents, Environment, and Mexican Action.

While there are also typical genre lists you can browse through, none of them let you sort by popularity or filter by rating or year. This is by far my biggest issue with the service. That, and both TV shows and movies are mixed into the same lists and said lists must be browsed horizontally in a carousel-like menu. It's just not super user-friendly.

However, I do like that you can search for actors and directors to find movies they're associated with. I also appreciate the Continue watching section.

Big selection, including recent films.

Good video quality.

Really great mobile app.

Can't sort films by popularity.

Available only in the US and its territories.

Crackle is a no-brainer for this list. I always come back to it to watch free movies online because of its list of hundreds of full-length films and original programming. These are big-name movies with stars I'm sure you know.

Although you have to sit through commercials, I find them to be relatively short, with only a few breaks during a movie.

Another reason I choose Crackle is because of its unique categories like Foreign Language, Stand-Up, British, Variety/Talk/Games, and Unidentified/Unexplained . It's fun to look through interesting genres like this.

A closed captioning toggle is available directly from the video player for all users but, if you sign up for an account (it's free), you can also enable parental controls (options are kids mode, teen mode, and grown-up mode).

Here are some examples of the most popular movies on Crackle: Rabbit, Ninja: Shadow Of A Tear, Red Line, Losin' It, Swift, and Dune Warriors.

Supports 'resume watching.'

Clearly shows which titles are leaving soon.

Genre lists can't be sorted.

Few unique genres.

Redbox is known for its DVD rental kiosks, but they also have free movie streams available through their website and mobile app. No matter where you use it, the user interface is quite bland, and you can't sort any of the lists. Still, I'll end up here from time to time if I can't find something good through these other services.

Like most movie sites, Redbox's collection can be browsed by genre to help you find dramas, kid movies, romance films, comedies, etc. Faith-Based is one category I haven't seen elsewhere.

Redbox also makes it super simple to see which movies are the most popular and which ones will be leaving the site soon. Some of the latest movies added to their streaming collection include Autumn Road, Repeat, Night Night, Megan , and Infinitum: Subject Unknown .

Includes thousands of free videos.

Adds new movies often.

No ads display within the movies.

Loads of genres to pick from.

Unique movies.

Must have a supported library card or school account.

The Kanopy movie streaming site is different from these other choices because you need a valid library card or university login before you can watch anything. However, there are zero commercials in the movies, and new films are added every month.

Use the Kanopy signup page to search for your library, whether it's a public library or one attached to a school. You can start watching movies after you've been approved.

Kanopy does a great job providing useful categories to look through. There's Short Film, History - Ancient, LGBTQ Cinema, War & Action, Sociology, Performing Arts, Human Rights, Everyday Health, and K-12 Lessons .

A few of the more popular movies here include Memento, The Girl on the Train, and Maurice.

There's also an entirely separate section for Kanopy kids movies . My son's old enough now to watch non-kid movies, but if he weren't, I'd be thrilled with this. There are subsections like Story Time and Read-Along Storybooks . You can also set up parental controls to force only age-appropriate content.

The Best Free Movie Websites in February 2024

In the list below, you’ll find the best free movie streaming sites that are active right now.

1. Crackle: Features free movies from Sony Pictures

Homepage screenshot of Crackle

What We Liked

  • No illegal content
  • A varied library with lots of categories
  • Low ad intrusion

What We Didn't Like

  • No subscription plan
  • Outdated interface

Crackle is our number one pick among the best free movie sites. It’s also sometimes referred to as “ Sony Crackle ” (since Sony bought it in 2006). Crackle is one of those relatively unknown free movie websites with great content. This is a shame because it’s completely legit and has a varied library , which is why we have included it at the very top of our best free movie streaming sites list.

Crackle is perfect for watching movies online. It features free movies and TV series from popular studios like Lionsgate , MGM , Sony Pictures , and DreamWorks .

As far as free streaming sites go, Sony Crackle looks great, and we found it easy to navigate. Compared to other free movie websites, which are normally operated on a shoestring budget, the difference is clear.

We found a huge list of fan favorites, like The Office . Crackle also has shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine , so while you won’t find the latest releases, it’s not just limited to decades-old content.

Crackle doesn’t have a subscription model , but the ads on the platform aren’t too bad. You can enjoy Sony Pictures movies , from classics to newer releases, completely for free.

2. Peacock TV: The best overall free movie streaming website

Homepage screenshot of Peacock TV with Logo to watch movies free online

  • Legitimate streaming platform
  • Decent pricing for paid subscriptions
  • Impressive library of movies and TV shows
  • Perfect for watching new movies free online
  • Unavailable outside the US

Peacock is a platform we’ve written about a lot, because it is an amazing place to watch new movies for free online. There are ways to access Peacock wherever you may be on the planet, and it’s one of the few sites where you can watch free movies without breaking any laws .

There is a small caveat, however, that made Peacock land a second place instead of a first one: Peacock has an impressive library of free movies and TV series that is now only available for people who already have a free account. Those users can watch for free, as long as they’re fine with viewing advertisements .

New users, however, can no longer sign up for this free subscription. They will be forced to subscribe to Peacock TV instead.

Keep in mind that Peacock is only available in the US and limited other countries. People located in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Italy can access the service as part of a paid TV subscription with Sky or NOW TV .

If you want to access Peacock abroad, you’ll need to change your IP with a VPN. This way, the streaming provider will believe you’re accessing it from the United States. NordVPN is the best option for unlocking free streaming sites in the US and masking your true location, therefore keeping you hidden.

3. Tubi: A legitimate streaming experience with minimal ads

Homepage screenshot of Tubi with Logo

  • Distribution rights
  • Access to content from Fox Corporation
  • Decent library
  • More ads than its competitors

Tubi comes in third on our list of best free movie streaming sites, since it owns broadcasting rights for all its content. You can watch free movies on Tubi without breaking the law . This platform is owned by Fox Corporation and has been around since 2014 . It features media from big names in the entertainment industry , like Paramount, MGM, and Warner Bros.

Just like Peacock, however, Tubi is only available in the US , so you’ll need to use a VPN to change your IP to a US IP address if you want to access this free movie website. You can use NordVPN to access thousands of free movies and TV shows on Tubi.

Unlike Peacock, you can’t subscribe to a premium account and get rid of the ads on Tubi. If you use Tubi, you’ll have to view the ads.

4. SolarMovie: Free movie website with the best personalization options

Homepage screenshot of Solar Movie with Logo

  • Strong personalization options
  • Good categorization
  • Features the latest releases
  • The interface can be overwhelming at times
  • A lot of ads
  • Doesn't have distribution rights for content

Like Cineb, SolarMovie is a new player in the scene of free streaming sites, but it’s gaining a lot of popularity thanks to its personalization options. Users will appreciate just how easy it is to sort media based on genre , country, and launch date, with several categories to choose from, including anime, fantasy, mythological, and sci-fi.

But this can sometimes be a double-edged sword. The strong personalization and categorization of free movies and TV shows mean that SolarMovie’s interface seems a bit overwhelming in the beginning . Not to mention, ads on the platform can get annoying. Even so, it’s a decent website for anyone interested in free streaming .

Right from the offset, we found the homepage to be packed with the latest releases , including Scream VI and even Avatar: The Way of Water ! Both launched and streamed in a high-resolution mode without trouble, though we did have to close three pop-up adverts just to get started.

Already a fan of SolarMovie but looking for something different? Make sure to check out our list of the best SolarMovie alternatives for more streaming options.

5. IMDb TV: Reliable movie website with good titles

Screenshot of IMDbTV website page with logo added

  • Legitimate platform
  • Quick-loading media player
  • Contains lots of information about motion pictures
  • Not a huge collection of movies and TV shows
  • Unavailable outside the US without a VPN

If you’ve ever googled a movie, TV show, director, or actor, you’ve probably already heard of IMDb . It’s a directory of information about any motion picture that can help you find good movies to watch.

IMDb TV is the service’s free streaming platform – yes, we were shocked to discover its existence, too! Like Peacock or Tubi, it allows users to watch movies online for free in a completely legal manner. Since its acquisition by Amazon, IMDbTV is not on its own site anymore, but users can still enjoy its library on Amazon .

Just because IMDb TV is owned by Amazon doesn’t mean that the content variety is as large as you’ll find on Amazon Prime. It has a considerably smaller collection of movies and TV shows, allowing it to be available for free.

However, IMDb TV is only available in the US, so you’ll need a VPN like NordVPN if you want to access it anywhere else. NordVPN has over a thousand servers in the US , so you should have no problem finding one that will give you a smooth streaming experience and fast speeds.

6. Vudu: An up-and-coming legitimate free movie streaming platform

Homepage screenshot of VUDU free movie website with Logo

  • Legitimate and free streaming site
  • Buy and rent content
  • Stylish site that could pass for a premium streaming service
  • Small library
  • Not a lot of recent releases

Vudu is a good, legitimate alternative to MovieStars, which recently went offline. Unfortunately, while testing the site, we found that it doesn’t have a vast library , and you probably won’t be able to find the latest releases here as soon as they hit other streaming platforms . Even so, it’s still one of the best free movie streaming sites that only show openly available content.

It’s a great way to watch free movies online without constant interruption from ads. Not all content on Vudu is free to watch, but you can use Vudu to buy or rent individual movies and TV shows for very low prices.

7. AZMovies: Popular website with an extensive collection of free movies

Homepage screenshot of AZ Movies with Logo

  • Popular platform with a large library of movies
  • Relatively low ad intrusion
  • No TV shows
  • Blocks a number of VPNs

AZMovies is one of the most popular free movie sites out there, and it’s been around for quite a while. It features thousands of movies and has a huge following of people tuning in every month. Unfortunately, it features no TV shows.

We recently revisited this website to assess how it has changed. Ads on the site used to get pretty annoying , but AZMovies has made changes. There are now far fewer adverts. We selected a movie, hit play, and it started streaming without a single pop-up.

However, many of the VPNs we used were blocked . AZMovies didn’t allow us to access movies with Proton VPN. Free VPNs weren’t the only problem, as the site also blocked Intego Privacy Protection, for example. We were able to bypass these blocks using the browser extension for NordVPN .

We don’t recommend accessing free movie websites without a VPN, as that can be unsafe. If you do want to check out AZMovies, use NordVPN with its browser extension, as it will encrypt your traffic. We advise using this VPN with Google Chrome for the best experience.

8. MyBundle.TV: Your directory for free movies online

Homepage screenshot of MyBundle with Logo

  • Big directory of movies and TV shows
  • Easy to find HQ streams
  • Quick overviews of streaming options
  • No content available on the platform
  • Not all sources are free

MyBundle.TV is a very different streaming platform compared to what we’re used to. It doesn’t host its own videos. Instead, it’s one of the free streaming sites that help you find a platform where you can enjoy particular TV shows and movies. It’s like a directory or listing site for free movie streaming .

People use this service to find the best source for the content they’re looking for. Essentially, it’ll tell you where to watch movies free online and how to access them. With a huge directory like MyBundle.TV, visitors are guaranteed to find the motion picture they’re looking for in 4K!

We put MyBundle.TV to the test, searching for a range of movies stretching from the 1980s to the present day. Whether it was Back to the Future or Black Adam , the website had recommendations for everything we could think of . We were impressed!

Just keep in mind that not all movie sources displayed on the site are free . For example, if you search for “Black Widow,” it’ll only display Disney+ as an option, which is not a free streaming site . On the flip side, it’ll tell you exactly how much you can expect to pay if you want to watch a movie or TV show.

9. FlixTor: Updated library with several free movies in HD

Homepage screenshot of FlixTor free streaming site with Logo

  • High-quality files
  • A huge library
  • Ads can appear malicious

FlixTor is one of the best free movie websites to find the latest movies for free. We’ve actually written about it before in our piece on how FlixTor works and whether it’s illegal (it is in most jurisdictions!).

FlixTor has a smooth interface. It has an immense library of high-quality movies and TV shows. If you search for any title on FlixTor, you’re almost guaranteed to find it in high definition.

The ads aren’t too intrusive either, though you’ll want to watch out for any adverts that claim your device is infected: don’t click on those! Also, we found that FlixTor often offers to install an app version on your device . We advise you to remain on your browser . Don’t install software recommended by free movie websites.

Screenshot of browser address bar, install Flixtor

Contrary to popular belief, FlixTor isn’t a legitimate streaming platform . Watching your favorite piece of media on it can be considered piracy , so we recommend using one of the legitimate alternatives on this list instead.

10. StreamM4u: One of the few movie sites that offers a completely ad-free experience

Homepage screenshot of Stream 4 You with Logo

  • No pop-up ads whatsoever
  • Clunky interface
  • R-rated adverts

StreamM4u lands a spot on our list of the best free movie websites thanks to its ad-free library . It doesn’t have the biggest selection of free movies, it’s not the prettiest, and not all files are high quality. Suffice it to say, it’s not anyone’s first option when looking for free streaming sites . But it’s free, so people still use it.

The homepage offers a global search that lets you find specific movies. There are also tabs for recommended movies, new movies, and new TV shows. Unfortunately, navigation between these sections isn’t seamless. In our experience, the tabs disappear when choosing one.

While there aren’t too many adverts and no pop-ups, the ones we did find were quite explicit. We saw a lot of adult content in the banner and sidebar adverts . Don’t want to deal with those ads? NordVPN offers a useful ad blocker that will make StreamM4u a lot more bearable!

11. Music HQ: Great search functionality to help you discover the best movies

Homepage screenshot of Music HQ with Logo

  • Filter by country and genre
  • No pop-up ads
  • Strong search engine
  • Still features banner ads

Despite what the name might suggest, Music HQ is not a music streaming site. It’s a free movie and TV show streaming site with a very good search engine and a Night Mode option.

The best part is that it doesn’t have any pop-up ads , just the occasional banner. When you add it all up, Music HQ stands out among free streaming sites thanks to its great user experience.

We found the filters on this website to be quite useful. We filtered by country, allowing us to find niche titles from more than 35 different countries . You can also search by genre.

12. YouTube: Most popular streaming platform in the world with a great collection of old titles

Homepage screenshot of YouTube with Logo

  • The largest video streaming platform on the internet
  • A great selection of older titles
  • Exclusive content from indie developers
  • Quite pushy with their ads
  • No new releases

We’d be very surprised if you haven’t heard of YouTube before. It’s the most popular video streaming platform on the Internet. You might not expect to find movies for free on YouTube. However, we found that the website often features full-length movies and TV shows , which makes it a great contender in our list of the best free movie streaming sites.

You’ll have more luck looking for older, more obscure titles on the platform. That’s because streaming rights for these shows have largely expired, making them fair game. Shows like The FBI Files have entire seasons available in various playlists on YouTube . We also found a lot of exclusive content from indie developers, like the Fool’s Day short.

Pro tip: Remember to manage your privacy settings on YouTube , as the service provider will use your personal information to push ads on you.

13. YesMovies: A great overall free movie streaming website

Homepage screenshot of YESmovies with Logo to watch free movies online

  • Great navigation
  • Enormous library
  • Options for personalization
  • Riddled with ads

If YesMovies was a legitimate movie website, it’d be a treat. During our testing, we found that it has a friendly interface, good navigation, and an enormous library with thousands of free movies and TV series. It’s a popular free movie website for streaming, and it even has personalization features , like a favorite list.

Apart from that, it’s relatively easy to search for titles. There’s a search bar to type what you’re looking for. Compared to the market standard — a page loaded with various titles — this is refreshing to see. We recommend using the Filter button to switch between TV shows and movies . The interface seems to prioritize TV shows, and we found it difficult to locate movies without filtering first.

The only downside is that YesMovies is extremely intrusive with its ads . We were closing pop-ups left and right before you could enjoy our favorite show or movie on it. One wrong click, and you might be downloading a computer virus onto your device.

If you want to protect yourself from potential malware on free movie streaming sites, you can use NordVPN’s Threat Protection. This is a free tool included in Nord’s VPN subscription, which is now running a special deal.

14. Internet Archive: The best site to watch classics

Homepage screenshot of Internet Archive with Logo

  • A special library of classic movies, likely unavailable anywhere else
  • Completely legal
  • No releases outside the public domain

Are you passionate about golden-age media productions? Then the Internet Archive is one of the free streaming sites for you. All content on the site is authorized, featuring classic movies that are in the public domain , so no distribution rights are needed.

If you’re looking for the latest summer blockbuster, there’s nothing on the Internet Archive for you. On the other hand, if you love classic movies, give it a shot. Need more convincing? Keep in mind that the Internet Archive is also one of the few free movie websites that have no ads , and it’s completely free to access for everyone.

The Internet Archive contains much more than just movies. On it, you’ll find millions of multimedia productions with historical value, plus books, audio recordings, news, and much more!

15. Afdah: Large collection of high-definition movies with few ads

Homepage screenshot of Afdah with Logo

  • A substantial library
  • Cluttered user interface

Note : This free movie website is now called Afdah 2, but the content is still very much the same.

Keeping the low ad intrusion trend going, Afdah is one of the best free online movie streaming sites and is very popular among streamers. It has a substantial library, offering high-definition quality for all of its movies and TV shows, and only features the occasional pop-up ad. While the name might be harder to remember, the experience on the platform isn’t lackluster .

Across the top of the page, we could filter by genre . Down the right-hand side, we could also filter by year of release . Oddly, Afdah duplicates the genre filters here, making the interface feel a bit cluttered.

When accessing free movie streaming sites, it is best to ensure that your personal data is encrypted to keep it away from prying eyes . Afdah, generally, can be a safe site to use for streaming, but taking precautions is also important.

Therefore, consider using NordVPN to watch free movies online on Afdah, as it has excellent security features and top-notch encryption to keep your data hidden.

16. Pluto TV: The best option to watch movies and shows from the Viacom network

Homepage screenshot of Pluto TV with Logo

  • Great library of content from popular distributors
  • Legally operated
  • Ad timing is bad (in the middle of your content)
  • No paid subscription options

Pluto TV is another platform owned and operated legally by a major broadcaster. It’s part of the ViacomCBS family and lets you watch the best movies and TV series from companies like MTV, Nickelodeon, and Comedy Central, which is why we have included it in our list of best free movie streaming sites.

It doesn’t have a subscription model, so you can only enjoy Pluto TV for free. The good thing is that it has very few ads . You will need to suffer the occasional break during your content, but there are no pop-ups and no banners.

At first, we couldn’t access the site from the Netherlands. That’s because it’s geo-locked for viewers outside of the US. If you’re not from the US, you’ll need a VPN like NordVPN to access Pluto TV. NordVPN is an unblocking powerhouse that will help you bypass online restrictions on Pluto TV within minutes.

17. Yify TV: The best bet to find obscure movie titles

Homepage screenshot of YIFY TV free movie site with Logo

  • A large library
  • Intuitive navigation
  • Dedicated subtitles available
  • Horrendous ad intrusion
  • Majority of ads are adult-themed

Yify TV is one of the free movie websites that has a substantial library and a very simple interface. It also has subtitles available, which makes it a good entry on our best free movie sites list . Other than that, however, it’s an ad-filled mess.

When we opened Yify TV, we were met with banners and pop-up ads. The pop-up ads reappeared after being closed when we loaded a stream. Then, we faced embedded ads within the video feed. We also found the majority of ads to be pornographic or related to gambling.

People usually steer towards Yify when the title they’re looking for isn’t available on other free streaming sites. Given the high ad intrusion, we can understand why. Besides exclusive movies or free TV shows, there’s little incentive to choose Yify TV over an alternative .

18. Xumo Play: Watch live TV in addition to free movies

Image shows a screenshot of the Xumo Play free movie website homepage

  • Operated legally
  • Shows live content as well as on-demand
  • Available on multiple devices
  • Confusing interface at times

Xumo Play is another legal, free movie site . It used to be known as Xumo TV but was rebranded in 2022 after Comcast created a new joint venture with Charter Communications.

This streaming platform offers both VODs and live content. While testing Xumo TV, we noticed that you can choose from an array of free movies and TV shows. Just don’t expect much in terms of content variety .

Xumo Play is available on a suite of devices that is not so common for free movie websites. First-time users may find its interface pretty confusing . It automatically displays the live content streaming at the moment when you visit its site.

Unfortunately, Xumo is one of the free streaming sites that is only available in the US . If you want to access it from outside the States, you’ll need to use a VPN to get a US IP address. We recommend NordVPN for this.

19. Bounce TV: A free streaming website that focuses on Afro-American content

Homepage screenshot of Bounce TV with Logo

  • Focused on a specific niche
  • High definition available
  • Only available in the US

Bounce TV is a US-based free movie website targeting the African-American community. It features shows and movies with a diverse cast and has a very specific niche .

It’s free to access, has high-definition media quality , and the ads are not really annoying, which is why it is very deserving of a spot on our list of the best free movie streaming sites.

Not in the US at the moment? No problem. You can easily access Bounce TV by connecting to an American NordVPN server. Enjoy your movies!

20. Yidio: A streaming platform aggregator

Homepage screenshot of Yidio free streaming site with Logo

  • Large directory of media sources
  • No content available on the site itself
  • Not all options are free

Yidio is not your average free movie site . Much like MyBundle.TV it’s a directory where you can find the sources for any movie or TV show.

Although Yidio doesn’t host content on its servers, it still made our list of the best free websites. The sources for media can sometimes offer movies for free, and Yidio itself is always free.

The only difference between Yidio and MyBundle.TV is that Yidio’s interface is a bit outdated . Other than that, both sites feature pretty much the same links to content on free streaming platforms.

21. Popcornflix: User-friendly website that works across devices

Homepage screenshot of PopcornFlix with Logo

  • Library with many TV shows
  • Small movie collection

Popcornflix is a free movie streaming site that’s easy to navigate . It’s also extremely easy to use on a variety of devices, which is rare for free streaming sites. As the name suggests, it is also one of the most popular Popcorn Time alternatives out there.

This free movie website focuses mostly on TV shows, so movie buffs won’t be blown away by it. When we tested Popcornflix, we couldn’t find any of the latest blockbuster releases .

However, it’s still not riddled with ads, so it’s a pleasant choice for people who want to catch the latest episodes of their favorite show, especially if you want to enjoy them on the go.

22. VexMovies: A great option to watch movies without any ads

Screenshot of VexMovies PW website homepage

  • Decent library size
  • Lots of HD titles
  • Potentially malicious ads

VexMovies is a free movie website that provides free access to a lot of HD titles, both movies and TV shows. It has a collection of new and old content. VexMovies has no ads and a pretty massive library, so it’s still a good pick for the best free movie streaming sites list .

However, it wouldn’t be our first choice to watch free movies online. While some ads can be annoying, others are just downright dangerous. When we visited VexMovies, a potentially malicious advert opened in a new tab. It encouraged us to download an “antivirus.”

Screenshot of an example of malicious ad asking you to install browser extension

Never download these kinds of files , especially when prompted to do so by an unverified website or advert. Also, it is always wise to use the best antivirus software when visiting any streaming site. In reality, that pop-up ad on VexMovies will almost certainly install malware .

If you want to have peace of mind when accessing content on VexMovies, it is best to get NordVPN for your device . With its Threat Protection feature, you don’t have to worry even if you accidentally click on something you shouldn’t have, as it safeguards you against malware like keyloggers that record your keystrokes and then pass on this information to hackers.

23. TinyZone: A YouTube clone for free movies and TV shows

Screenshot of TinyZone website homepage

  • Great loading time
  • An extensive collection
  • Easy to navigate
  • Tries to enable spammy desktop notifications

While it’s clearly ripping off YouTube’s interface, TinyZone is a free movie streaming site . It’s easy to navigate , not too intrusive with its ads, and it boasts an extensive collection of both movies and TV shows.

Add to that the fast loading time and little to no buffering , even on slow connections, and you can see why we chose to include TinyZone among the best free movie sites . This website also allowed us to create a favorites list, and we appreciated that the quality of each title is clearly listed under the stream.

Some ISPs may block access to free movie websites, including TinyZone, as was the case when we tested this website. You can unblock TinyZone with a VPN like NordVPN to gain unrestricted access.

24. Movies Found Online: Good variety of free movies and TV show streams

Screenshot of MoviesFoundOnline website with logo in the corner

  • Good content quality
  • Variety of free movies
  • User-friendly
  • Public domain movies
  • Tons of ads

The next free movie streaming site on our list of free movie platforms is Movies Found Online . We found that it has a decent library of free movies ranging from old cult classics to newer independent films. The site even offers animated shorts and films, documentaries, stand-up comedy, and TV series.

Because of the range of content it offers, we thought it would make a great addition as one of the best free movie streaming sites. It’s not higher on our list because ads on free movie sites aren’t just a small annoyance . When they’re so abundant, it’s difficult to enjoy even the best movie, TV show, or standup comedy act. It also exposes users to adware and other malware.

If you want to watch Movies Found Online without fearing for ads and viruses, make sure to use NordVPN! This VPN includes an adblocker and Threat Protection to keep you safe while streaming.

25. Kanopy: Excellent choice for users with a library membership

Homepage screenshot of Kanopy with Logo

  • Completely legitimate ad-free platform
  • A great option for users with library memberships
  • Allows simultaneous streaming
  • The content library is fairly limited

Kanopy is one of the more interesting options to watch free movies online. For starters, you’ll need a library card to access the movies on this website . This can be a library card from your university or even a public library. Once you sign up using the card, you get free access to some of the latest movie titles.

The best part about Kanopy is that it’s totally legit and completely ad-free . It also works beyond the US, so you’ll be able to use it as long as the platform accepts your library or university card.

Keep in mind, though, that this is one of the free movie websites where the overall selection of movies is pretty limited, which is typical of ad-free free movie sites.

26. FMovies: Free movie streams in 4K and 1080p

Homepage screenshot of FMovies with Logo

  • Large and updated content library
  • Clean and simple interface
  • High-quality streams are available
  • Search results aren't well-prioritized

FMovies is also among the best free movie streaming sites out there. It attracts more than a million users every month and owes its popularity to its vast and updated collection of movies. The titles on the site are available in 1080p HD , and some even in 4K .

There are, however, a couple of drawbacks to using FMovies. The first is that we had to navigate through several ads before getting our movie stream. The second is that the search doesn’t prioritize movies well . For example, when we searched for The Avengers , we had to scroll through several rows of releases to find the latest movies in the Marvel series.

Moreover, FMovies is blocked by some search engines. If you find that this is the case, there are plenty of FMovies alternatives out there, including lots of sites on our list.

A VPN will add an extra layer of protection when streaming content with FMovies, especially since there are lots of ads on the site that may include some carrying malicious software. Along with its Threat Protection function, NordVPN has a special feature called a kill switch, which will disconnect you from the internet if the VPN malfunctions. Therefore, you will always be protected if you use NordVPN when using FMovies .

27. MoviesJoy: A streaming platform with Google-like simplistic movie search functionality

Homepage screenshot of MoviesJoy free movie streaming site with Logo

  • User-friendly Google-like interface
  • HD streams for most movies
  • Ads are not intrusive
  • Aggressively pushes a premium plan

If you’re looking for a simple free movie website with better search functionality than FMovies, then MoviesJoy is the best option for you. The free streaming site has a minimalist design with a powerful search tool . You can find the latest blockbusters as well as older classics on the website. Movie streams are also available in HD.

While you will see ads on MoviesJoy, they’re not too intrusive . Moreover, the site doesn’t feature pop-ups .

However, the biggest drawback we found was that MoviesJoy tried to push a premium plan. When we tried to stream Black Panther: Wakanda Forever , we were served a 60-second ad for their premium subscription. We couldn’t start streaming until the ad had disappeared.

28. StreamLord: Quick and easy access to high-quality streams

Homepage screenshot of StreamLord with Logo

  • Very few ads
  • Easy-to-use website
  • No login or sign-up required

StreamLord is another great free movie website. It features high-quality streams of some of the latest flicks and TV shows. When testing the website, we found it easy to use, though it didn’t sort movies by genre or year of release.

StreamLord’s biggest plus point is that it’s virtually ad-free . We didn’t encounter a single ad while using it despite not having created a free account. You should be able to watch the movie of your choice within a few clicks of landing on StreamLord.

If you do come across an advert on Streamlord, however, you should be careful . These can be malicious, as is the case on other free movie websites, including VexMovies. An ad might open in a new tab and offer to install an antivirus, for example. Never click on these!

29. The Roku Channel: The best legal site to watch free content across devices

Homepage screenshot of The Roku Channel with Logo

  • Legitimate ad-supported platform
  • High-resolution videos
  • Provides free live TV streams
  • Site layout makes it difficult to discover new titles and shows
  • The library is limited in comparison to other free streaming websites

The Roku Channel is an ad-supported movie streaming platform that allows you to watch Roku originals, movies, and TV shows for free . You can access the website from your web browser or even add The Roku Channel to your streaming device.

The streams are high-quality and buffer really quickly. You can also use The Roku Channel to watch free TV. The content library of this free movie website is limited compared to others. Also, the site doesn’t sort movies into any categories , which can make exploring new films and shows a challenge.

30. PrimeWire: Simple streaming website with an extensive library of free movies

Homepage screenshot of PrimeWire with Logo to watch many movies free online

  • Large repository of high-quality free movies
  • Basic but effective and efficient interface
  • Mirrors change frequently
  • Lots of ads

PrimeWire is one of the original free movie websites. It’s been around for a while and continues to be one of the best free movie streaming sites for users due to its up-to-date and extensive collection of movies .

The site design is pretty basic, but you can easily find the movies you want without difficulties. Most streams that we tried were available in HD , but some of the latest releases were CAM-rips.

Much like Putlocker and other free streaming sites, PrimeWire also functions through copies and mirrors . To avoid getting your device infected with unwanted malware , it’s probably a good idea to learn how to use PrimeWire safely .

31. CONtv: The best streaming site for Comic-Con fans

Homepage screenshot of ConTV with Logo

  • Completely legal website
  • No sign-up or sign-in required to watch most movies
  • Perfect for watching Comic Con-related content
  • Site can be a little buggy
  • Available only in the US

CONtv is a unique movie streaming site that appeals to fans of Comic Con. It’s dedicated entirely to movies, TV series, and other content that is popular among Comic Con fans . This includes anime, cult films, and classic martial arts films.

The site is completely free to use , and you don’t even need to create an account to start watching your favorite movies. However, we found that the CONtv website isn’t the easiest to use and can be a little buggy. But hey, it is a free service !

CONtv is available only in the United States . So, if you’re trying to access it from elsewhere, you’ll probably need to use a VPN . We recommend using NordVPN to watch CONtv from abroad as it has almost two thousand US servers, making it easier and faster to stream your content.

32. Crunchyroll: The best site for anime content

Homepage screenshot of Crunchyroll with Logo

  • Extensive library of anime content
  • Legal and free
  • Works on several devices
  • Ad-based free movie site
  • Some content is only available with a subscription

Anime is one of the most popular genres among the younger generation today, and Crunchyroll is by far the best free movie streaming site for anime films and TV shows online . It features classic titles, such as Naruto Shippuden, in addition to mangas, news, and even games.

While streaming on the website is free, you will encounter ads. If you want to get rid of these ads entirely, you can opt for a premium subscription to access the Crunchyroll website . The premium subscription also lets you watch the latest shows and movies a day after their release in Japan.

33. Vumoo: Ideal for changing playback resolution

Homepage screenshot of Vumoo free streaming site with Logo

  • Offers different resolutions for each movie
  • The site is quick and responsive
  • User-friendly platform
  • Potentially malicious adverts

Vumoo is one of the best free movie websites , because it allows users to pick from multiple different resolutions to watch free movies online. This free streaming site is pretty clean and runs smoothly as well. You can watch countless popular TV shows on Vumoo.

Again, watch out for potentially malicious adverts on this website. You may see pop-out adverts in a new tab that offer antivirus or other cybersecurity software. Installing software from ads like these can infect your device with malware , so make sure to turn on NordVPN’s Threat Protection!

34. Plex: Smooth playback with media player features

Screenshot of PlexTV homepage with added logo in the corner

  • Built-in media player features
  • Good compatibility with a range of devices
  • A really clean, feature-rich interface
  • Supported by advertisements
  • Limited content compared to other sites with free movies

Plex Media Server allows you to stream movies for free . You can also watch several TV shows , and you’ve even got access to live TV. Plus, you don’t need to create an account, either.

This service works with a VPN, and while you’ll have to withstand the usual advertisements , the interface and media server playback are really good for a free movie website .

However, content on this platform is limited compared to the other platforms on our list of best free movie sites .

35. MyFlixer: Varying resolution with numerous categories to choose from

Screenshot of MyFlixer homepage with added logo in the corner

  • You can stream in high-definition
  • A good, clean UI, despite the ads
  • More content than some free movie sites
  • A lot of adverts

MyFlixer doesn’t just give you movies for free; you can also choose your preferred resolution on this free movie site, and the user interface is pretty slick .

Aside from free movies, it also has a ton of TV shows to choose from, and this is one of the main reasons it has made it to our list of the best free movie streaming sites. You can select the Top IMDb category to get the best-rated movies, in case you’re not sure what to watch.

We did have to click away quite a lot of adverts before we could start streaming. But otherwise, we could add movies and shows to our favorites and “turn off the lights” for a better, dimmed experience.

36. WatchFree: Watch the latest releases in high-definition

Image shows the WatchFree movie website homepage

  • Has the latest Hollywood releases
  • Very slick and simple user interface
  • Loads of pop–up ads that open in new tabs

The first thing that struck us when testing WatchFree is that it’s pretty ad-heavy . We saw two ads pop out in new tabs when trying to click the search bar. We got another when clicking on an Insidious: The Red Door stream and a fourth when we tried to play the movie. After that, it was smooth sailing – and the movie was perfect quality.

Navigation is simple. There are different categories, like “Trending Movies,” and each entry has handy tags that help you choose a stream. We could see, at a glance, the movie’s runtime, quality, year of release, and a star rating.

Really, save for the ads, it’s a very user-friendly platform. You can take care of those annoying ads with an ad blocker. NordVPN’s built-in ad blocker is perfect because you’ll get the protection of the best premium VPN at the same time!

37. SFlix: A new free movie site that lacks filters

Image of the SFlix website homepage

  • Simple user interface that just works
  • Numerous servers to choose from
  • A lack of filters can make searching difficult
  • Supported by adverts

SFlix is pretty new to the scene, but its interface is highly familiar. The website follows the tried-and-tested method of displaying horizontal reels of movie posters, making it easy to find what you’re looking for – provided it’s a new release. There’s a serious lack of filtering options, though you can view movies by genre.

Adverts can get annoying on SFlix. When we tested the site, every other click on a menu or movie launched an ad within a new tab. We recommend using one of the best ad blockers to avoid frustration.

These teething issues aside, SFlix is a solid new addition to the free movie streaming scene, in our opinion. Clicking a movie gives you more information on the title and a choice of server to stream the movie , reducing the chance of dud links.

38. HiMovies: A free movie streaming site with Chromecast support

Screenshot of HiMovies, homepage

  • Supports Chromecast – watch on your TV!
  • Up-to-date content library
  • Very few, small pop-up adverts
  • Some streams didn't load

HiMovies is one of the more recent additions to the free movie streaming scene, and it’s a new entry on our list. While testing the site, we had a smooth experience. We were able to load an HD movie quickly after accessing the site, and we only saw two adverts .

That said, and perhaps it’s because the site is newer, we saw some broken links . Some streams and adverts simply displayed a message that the image could not be loaded.

One of the best things about HiMovies is that it is one of the free movie websites that supports Chromecast . So, you can stream HD content directly on your TV if you own a Chromecast device. Check out our guide to using a VPN on Chromecast to stream content with the protection of a VPN.

We confidently recommend NordVPN for Chromecast because of its vast server network , fast streaming speeds , and effective unblocking features .

39. 1HD: An impressive new entry with an even more impressive UI

An image of the 1HD free movie streaming website

  • Minimal advertising
  • Crisp, slick UI that rivals major streamers
  • You can download content
  • "Latest movies" feed makes finding new content harder

You’d be forgiven for thinking that 1HD is a fully licensed streaming platform. It’s not – but with minimal adverts and a super–slick user interface, we were surprised to come across this new entry to the free movie scene, so we thought to include it in our best free movie streaming sites list.

As huge horror buffs, we tested a Nun II stream. It was a CAM–quality link, but we knew what we were getting into, thanks to the resolution labels . There’s plenty of other information about each movie, too, once you select a stream.

Our only complaint was that the “Latest Movies” feed includes any recently added titles. It quickly becomes cluttered with older movies that have just been added , making it harder to find newer flicks. But that does make for a very broad content library that’ll give you heaps of options!

40. LosMovies: Broad variety of big–name movies and family content

Image shows the LosMovies website homepage

  • Minimal adverts
  • Broad variety of content
  • Numerous server mirrors prevent dud links
  • Russian–hosted website

LosMovies is a pretty great movie information resource, besides being a good free movie streaming site. Each entry includes details like movie ratings, cast, genre, directors, and so on. The library features everything from Hollywood blockbusters to kids’ movies .

LosMovies offers numerous servers for most of the content it hosts. When we tested an Oppenheimer stream, the website gave us four server options to make sure we weren’t impacted by dud links. The stream launched in high definition, too, with zero adverts .

Make sure you use a VPN if you’re going to visit LosMovies. You should always connect to a VPN on free movie streaming websites, but particularly, given world events, when you’re visiting a Russian–hosted website. Get NordVPN for complete protection.

41. Freevee: Amazon’s free movie streaming site

Screenshot of the Freevee free movie website homepage

  • Safe, secure website (Amazon-owned)
  • Watch free movies legally
  • Snazzy user interface
  • Lacking content compared to other free movie sites

Freevee is a place to watch free movies online as long as you’re willing to put up with adverts . Since this free streaming belongs to Amazon, you don’t have to worry about watching illegal content. Also, the website is safe and secure for movie streaming, which makes it one of the best free movie websites.

The only drawback is that there’s not much content on Freevee compared to other free movie sites.

42. SBS On Demand: Free movies from Australia

Screenshot of SBS On Demand Australian free movie website

  • Free movie on-demand service
  • New content is added regularly
  • Official, legal website
  • Content only scales to 720p
  • Must create a (free) account
  • Requires an Australian VPN

Much like Freevee, SBS On Demand is an official website that operates within the law. It belongs to SBS, an Australian broadcaster. That means that you’ll need to use an Australian VPN server to change your IP address to an Australian one and watch free movies.

SBS On Demand is regularly updated, so there’s always a good library of content to choose from . And while it doesn’t have an extensive list of free movies as on other sites, you might find some hidden gems that aren’t seen elsewhere.

The downside here is that all content on SBS On Demand is capped at 720p , which isn’t full HD. Still, you won’t have to worry about breaking the law when you watch free movies here!

Looking for a good VPN with servers in Australia so you can try SBS On Demand for yourself? NordVPN offers the perfect solution and has a big discount sale running!

43. FilmRise: A place to catch classic movies

Screenshot of FilmRise website homepage

  • Both free and legal to use
  • A good place to catch classic movies
  • May be blocked in some countries – use a VPN
  • Lacks the latest blockbuster titles

FilmRise is a breath of fresh air in that the website hosts free content while remaining legal , and it doesn’t sacrifice usability, so we thought it was worth mentioning in our list of the best free movie streaming sites. There are tens of thousands of titles to find, with a whole range of movies from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s.

Navigating the FilmRise platform is easy. We could choose to catch a film or watch the latest TV shows from the homepage. Each of these menus breaks down into submenus with categories, allowing you to quickly find your favorite content. We did see some ads , but they’re not intrusive .

We were surprised to find that FilmRise is one of the free streaming sites that offer an app, too . Right now, you can choose to download FilmRise to your iPhone or Android smartphone. You can also install FilmRise on a Roku, Firestick, Android TV, and more.

44. Filmzie: Support lesser-known filmmakers

Screenshot of Filmzie website homepage

  • Works great on mobile, plus other devices
  • Entirely free but still legal
  • Support budding filmmakers in the industry
  • Requires you to create an account
  • VPN needed to access Filmzie in some countries

Filmzie is a free streaming site (like FilmRise) that offers ad-supported movies and TV shows. And, like FilmRise, it also offers an app that’s compatible with a whole host of devices. We tested Filmzie on our iPhone , and everything felt really easy to use. Categories are filtered into easy scroll bars, a little like Netflix.

Screenshot of Filmzie website homepage, mobile

While Filmzie is one of the free movie websites that offer some mainstream content, it’s a good platform for aspiring filmmakers. You can find movies here that you won’t find anywhere else . This does, of course, mean that you might find some content that isn’t up to the same production quality as Hollywood flicks. But it’s also a good way to find hidden gems!

45. Rakuten Viki: A treasure trove of Asian movies and TV shows

Screenshot of Rakuten VIKI website homepage

  • Fast and responsive navigation
  • Unique shows not seen elsewhere
  • No cluttering from adverts
  • Some content requires a subscription
  • No Western movie or TV show content

Rakuten Viki is one the best free movie websites if you’re interested in focusing on Asian TV shows and movies . We found a whole range of content directly from countries such as China, Korea, and Japan. While you can use the website for free, some content is paywalled at $4.99 per month .

The website is well-designed and easy to use. Rakuten Viki uses the side-scrolling categories layout that’s become popular with big platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix. This made it very simple for us to see what kinds of genres were available and dive straight into fresh content that we’ve not seen anywhere else!

While you do have to pay to access some content on this free streaming site, that was all clearly labeled, too. Look for the “ Watch Free ” tag to find the content you can access on the free streaming service. Anything that requires payment is tagged as “ Standard .”

To access this platform, you’ll need to get a US IP address. You can do this by signing up with NordVPN.

Are There Any Risks to Using Free Movie Sites?

Pirated content icon

The existence of free streaming sites is not illegal , and visiting these free movie websites is also legal. Many of the best free movie websites listed here are legitimate streaming platforms that own the distribution rights for the content they share.

Others operate in a shadier area, offering a place to watch movies free online, even though they don’t have the relevant permissions. These sites might contain pirated content . Most anti-piracy authorities focus on the owners of pirate sites , not users. Still, there’s a risk.

There are other dangers involved in watching free movies online, too. Here’s a quick rundown:

  • Free streaming websites can infect your device with malware if hijacked by a malicious third party.
  • Adverts on free movie sites are prolific – and malicious ads can also target your device with malicious software.
  • In some countries, your ISP may try to terminate your internet connection if you engage in piracy .
  • You may be contacted by a third party with a cease and desist . While uncommon, this can result in serious fines .

The legal consequences can depend on where you live. Eastern Europe, for example, is infamous for a lack of action against piracy. However, consuming copyrighted content is still illegal in many countries , and we urge you to avoid it.

At the very least, you should always be using a VPN on free movie sites. A VPN will protect you from cyber threats when accessing potentially unsecured websites. It’ll also stop your ISP from seeing and logging your browsing history. NordVPN offers robust protection against data snooping and malware attacks. Don’t visit a free movie site without it.

Why You Need a VPN to Watch Free Movies Online

We’ve already touched on how a VPN can protect you from free movie sites and the potential risks of using them. But there’s another benefit of VPNs . Some free streaming sites are geo-blocked, meaning you can’t use them from every country, but a virtual private network can help you bypass these restrictions.

To summarize, in using a VPN to visit free movie websites, your location is protected , your activity is hidden , and you’re safer from malware attacks . You will also be able to access blocked sites from anywhere.

Why use a VPN software infographic

If you’re new to the VPN scene, we’ll give you a helping hand in getting started. We tested every free movie site on this list with NordVPN – the absolute frontrunner in online security and unblocking.

Streaming movies and TV shows online for free is fun, but it can also be tiring to find the best site. If you want straightforward answers to questions about the best free movie sites, check our FAQ section below.

Crackle tops our list of the best free movie streaming sites. It has one of the most varied, legitimate libraries for movie and TV show buffs out there. It’s all free, provided you can sit through their ads.

Streaming movies and TV shows for free online can be legal, depending on a few factors. If the platform streaming said content has distribution rights for it, then yes, it’s legal. The best free streaming sites in this category include Pluto, Vudu, and Crackle.

However, if the platform streams content without distribution rights, then that content could be illegal, and it might be considered piracy depending on your location. Famous sites in this category include FlixTor and AZMovies.

Whether you get in trouble for watching free movies online will depend on where you live. While this is illegal in most parts of the globe, copyright laws are not uniformly enforced.

In a worst-case scenario, you can be throttled by your ISP, receive a fine, or be sent a cease and desist letter for illegally watching movies while accessing free movie streaming sites.

Yes, you need a VPN  when accessing free online movie streaming sites for two reasons:

  • Some sites, like Vudu and Peacock TV, are available only in select locations. You’ll need a VPN to overcome these restrictions.
  • Sites like Putlocker and PrimeWire are illegal in many countries as they host pirated content. It’s best to use a VPN to change your IP address when accessing these sites to avoid potential legal scrutiny.

You'll be able to access the site anyway! You can follow this guide if you need some help setting that up. Happy watching!

What do you think about Movies.do site?

Hi Marijane, Thank you for your question. By having a first look at the site, we noticed that it is immediately asking you to sign up for an account. In our experience, this is one of the ways sites can collect your data and potentially target your email to send you ads. Therefore, it is better to opt for a site we recommend in this article.

Need vpn :( to assess most of them and so many ads

Yes, most of these websites will use ads to make money, since the content on them is free. But using a (free) VPN (like the free versions of PrivadoVPN or ProtonVPN) and an adblocker will already make the sites much more usable! You can have a look at our best adblocker article for some (free) suggestions!

Prime Wire has been busted now it is just a trailer page

It seems to work fine for us! Have you tried the link listed in this article? That will lead you straight to the right page.

Fmovies does *NOT* stream anything in 4k, and as of today they've disabled the site for anyone using any type of ad block and it is completely unusable. You can't click on any movie of show because of all the overlay ads. Site is dead unless they stop blocking ad blockers.

Best Free Movie Streaming Sites 2024

best free movie streaming site in uk

We’ve all done it: Thought of a film to watch, only to find that out of all our streaming subscriptions, it’s nowhere to be found . Amazon, Disney+ and Netflix all fight for our attention, but really we just want to watch that one film. Well, if this trusty trio hasn’t got what you want, I’m sharing the best movie streaming sites that you can access for free.

Enjoy unlimited streaming and torrenting, anywhere in the world and protect your privacy online. With this exclusive offer, you can use ExpressVPN 30 days, risk-free!

Table of Contents

The Top 10 Best Movie Streaming Sites

Below are my top 10 best free movie streaming sites with no sign up required. All have pros and cons, but you’re guaranteed to find something to watch whatever genre you fancy.

YouTube has a huge number of free movies available as well as paid-for films. They’re not very easy to find, but due to the high quality of content on the platform, YouTube has earned itself a place on this list of the best free movie streaming sites with no sign up required.

free movie streaming sites

Tubi is one of the best movie streaming sites around. Some films can be rented for a small fee, but most are entirely free. Ads are shown throughout the movie, but if you’re stuck for something to watch, you can head to the ‘not on Netflix’ category to find something new . (Tubi isn’t currently available in Europe, but I’ll show you a trick to get access below!)

the best free movie streaming sites

3. PopcornFlix

This is one of my favourite websites to watch free movies, and commonly tops the list of the best movie streaming sites for fellow streamers. As it’s pretty interactive. You can make GIFs from scenes in the movies , and also leave comments pinned to certain points.

free movie streaming sites no sign up

You might not realise, but IMDb has its own platform where those in the US can watch movies online free. It’s easy to browse through films, and you don’t need an account to access them. The downside is that there are several in-video ads, which can get annoying.

free movie streaming sites imdbtv

If you can put up with a few ads, Vudu is a great place to stream movies online free. Films are usually uploaded in high definition , and there are plenty of popular movies to choose from. Free movies feature ads, and you must have an account to watch things.

free movie streaming sites vudu

6. Peacock TV

Owned by NBCUniversal, this US-based platform allows you to watch free movies online free. There are hours of TV and movies, as well as some originals you can only find on the platform. In order to access the free movie site, you will need to create an account first. From there, however, it’s easy to see which movies are free to watch, and which aren’t.

how to access free movie streaming sites

Yidio is another of the top free online movie streaming sites that has a wide selection to choose from. Not all of the films are streamed directly on the platform, so you might be taken to a different site for your screening.

8. YesMovies

YesMovies is often seen as one of the best free movie streaming sites with no sign up required. It does have ads, but it makes up for it in the massive content library available.

9. Nungsub.com

You might not have heard of this one! Nungsub.com is actually one of the best free movie streaming sites with no sign up required . Based in Thailand, this hidden gem has plenty of movies to get your teeth into.

10. FlixTor

Another one of the best free movie streaming sites with no sign up needed is FlixTor. It has low ad annoyance and an easy to use interface.

The Problem With the Best Movie Streaming Sites

So, while these are the best movie streaming sites, there are potential problems that can arise when using the best free movie streaming sites with no sign up required. The first, of course is ads .

While the platform might be free to use, the site owner still needs to make money somehow – and they do this through ad sales. Obviously, it’s not ideal to have your screening broken up by ads, but as you’re getting the content for free, it’s nice to give back to the owner by simply watching the ad before proceeding. However, if you really can’t cope with the interruptions, you can always try an ad blocker .

The second issue, in regards to sites like Peacock TV and Nungsub.com, is that they are only really available in certain countries . Even sites that are based in the UK can sometimes redirect you to a stream on another which which is based elsewhere. As such, you might find that some films aren’t available for you to watch.

Another issue is data throttling . When your internet provider sees that you’re trying to stream TV shows and films online, they have been known to reduce bandwidth. This is so there’s enough to go around. But with less bandwidth, you’re more likely to experience buffering. Again, hardly ideal when in the middle of a film.

But as my site isn’t just about highlighting issues, I do have a solution that will let you use the best free movie streaming sites no matter where you are in the world, buffer-free.

And for that you’ll need a VPN.

Try a VPN For Free

VPN stands for virtual private network, and essentially allows you to emulate your location . That means, if you choose one of the best free movie streaming sites with no sign up required from the list above – like Nungsub.com – you can pretend to be in Thailand and access all their content. To do so, you just need to connect to a server in that country and you’re done!

So wherever you find yourself, if you’re in the mood for a movie, and want to browse the best movie streaming sites, you can do so with a VPN.

What’s more, when you’re connected to a server, all your online traffic will travel through an encrypted tunnel , meaning nobody can see what you’re up to. Including your internet provider. And if they can’t see you searching for ‘best free movie streaming sites with no sign up’, they can’t reduce your speed. So, how do you get a VPN?

Well, I first want to give a word of warning: I don’t recommend free VPNs . Usually they’re not worth the hassle as they very rarely actually work. But they can also be a threat to your safety online. Free VPN providers have been known to sell their users’ data on to the highest bidder, meaning you could find yourself a victim of fraud.

But again, I don’t like to be the bearer of bad news, which is why I also have a trick up my sleeve to get you a free VPN.

ExpressVPN – my favourite brand – offers a 30-day money-back guarantee with no strings attached. No matter what type of subscription you sign up for, you’ll be able to enjoy the service for 30 days, and if you’re not satisfied, get a full refund. That means if you’re off on holiday, or desperately want to see the latest films that are released earlier in other countries, you’ll have plenty of time to do it. Then, when you’re done, you can cancel your subscription and get a refund.

How to access the best movie streaming sites with a VPN

If you’re watching movies on your laptop, the process is simple:

  • Sign up to a VPN of your choice (I’ve created a list below of the best VPNs that work with the best free movie streaming sites)
  • Download the software
  • Sign in, and click the power button
  • Select a server from anywhere in the world (for Nungsub.com, you’ll need a Thailand server. For Peacock, you’ll need a US server, etc)
  • Click connect
  • Head on over to Google to search for ‘best free movie streaming sites no sign up’, or click one of the links above
  • Find your favourite film and grab the popcorn

If you want to watch your movie on the big screen, you can’t either use a HDMI from your laptop, or create a virtual router in your Wi-Fi settings. (You can find out more about that, here )

The best VPNs for the best movie streaming sites

As I like my readers to always have the best of the best , I’ve created the list below of the best VPNs, that work with the best movie streaming sites above. All links work at the time of writing, and I do try to keep this list up to date if VPNs stop working, or a new option arrives on the scene.

I’ve ranked the VPNs based on their ease of use (because everyone should be able to watch movies online), their value for money and their speed of connection.

ExpressVPN | Review and cost 2024

So with your VPN in tow, you should now be able to access any of the best free movie streaming sites with no sign up required. Even if signing up is required, you’ll still be able to watch all your favourite shows and new movies with the help of a trusty VPN. A VPN will let you watch anything that takes your fancy , no matter where you are in the world, and with the help of encryption, it’ll also keep buffering at bay. I also recommend an ad blocker for anyone who doesn’t want to be interrupted by ads during their viewing.

If you’re struggling to connect your VPN, or want any other recommendations, don’t hesitate to ask!

[Updated: 4/3/24] Apps and sites like Crackle, Freevee, Peacock, Pluto TV, Tubi, Vudu and YouTube all have free movies online for you to stream. The only catch: You have to watch ads. On the plus side, while there are commercial interruptions, the movies are not edited for content like they are on broadcast channels. Which means you can still watch uncut movies and with fewer total interruptions than television airings.

And did we mention the movies were free ?

Which movies should you watch, though, now that you know where to find them? Rotten Tomatoes did some digging and sorted through the free movie catalogs of Peacock, Fandango At Home, Tubi, Freevee, YouTube, and Crackle to find the 100 best movies available to watch for free right now. These films, all Fresh on the Tomatometer, include Oscar winners, blockbusters, comedy classics, informative documentaries, and family favorites — all available to watch for free.

Check out our list of the Freshest movies to watch free online to find something new without paying rental or subscription fees.

Critics Consensus: Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure brings Paul Reubens’ famous character to the big screen intact, along with enough inspired silliness to dazzle children of all ages.

Critics Consensus: A riveting crime thriller full of emotional tension.

' sborder=

The Virgin Suicides (1999)

Watch Free Movies Online

What all these movies have in common is that they are available for viewing online free of charge. They might be part of the free movie catalog on a free movie site that also offers pay to stream films, such as Hulu. They might be available on an all free site such as Crackle or Snagfilms. Watching these free movies online does not require a subscription, a rental fee or a purchase of any kind. They're an easy answer to the question of how to watch movies for free online.

Free Online Movie Streaming Sites

You won't need to sign up for anything in order to watch free movies online. You don't need to have a subscription or an account with these sites in order to watch these movies. But the sites don't know who you are. They may require that you enter your birth date to verify that you're old enough to watch movies intended for mature audiences. All the movies should be able to stream without download, and you often can watch in HD movie quality. Use Yidio to sort by IMDB Score or Rotten Tomatoes.

Sometimes, streaming platforms will use free content to entice viewers to explore other content on the platform. Some TV networks, for example, will offer a limited number of episodes of the current season of TV series for free. These episodes are free to watch for a limited time. But if you want to watch entire seasons or older episodes, you'll often have to pay extra or sign up for a paid subscription.

Netflix, too, is increasingly offering access to some of its series and original movies to non-subscribers. This content is free for anyone to watch without a Netflix subscription. But the streamer hopes that you'll be so entertained by the free content when you watch movies online free. Then you'll be willing to pay for a subscription to the service.

Thousands of Free Online Movies

The catalogs of free content on these platforms can be extensive. Tubi offers thousands of free movies and TV shows, all of it available for free, no subscription or credit card required. Vudu has a library of more than 150,000 movies. Many of these movies are available for purchase or rental. But many of them, as well as many complete TV series seasons, are available at no charge.

Peacock, a new service from NBCUniversal, offers hundreds of movies and thousands of TV episodes from the media giant's catalog. And it's all free to stream on the platform's website. Crackle offers an impressive catalog of theatrical movies. And it also offers a library of original series and movies you can only watch on the Crackle platform. The Roku Channel offers hundreds of movie, live news and TV series. Some have complete seasons. All this is free to viewers who use Roku streaming devices.

Free Movies on Streaming Websites

The no-charge content on these platforms is a little different from the free trials offered by many subscription streaming services. The content on Crackle or Peacock, for example, is available without the need to set up an account on the platform. You also don't have to provide any payment information. Free-trial services work a little differently. Many premium streaming platforms, such as Disney+ and Apple TV+, offer free trial periods during which you can watch their content without paying. The same is true of many network streaming platforms such as STARZ or Showtime. The difference is that you'll need to sign up for an account on the platform and provide payment information. You won't be charged a subscription fee during the free-trial period. But if you don't cancel by the time the trial period ends, your account will automatically convert to a paid subscription. You'll be charged the subscription fee.

Keeping Free Movies Online

Of course, there's often a trade-off involved when it comes to watching movies for free. Sites often subsidize their free streaming movies offerings by including advertising along with the films. Movies may be prefaced with an ad or two. Sometimes there will be periodic commercial breaks throughout the movie. The ads are generally as unobtrusive as ads can be. And in the case of TV series, the experience is much like watching an episode on traditional broadcast TV. The ads allow the streaming platform to make money without charging the viewer a subscription fee. They're crucial to keeping the content free of charge. Many viewers find that it's worth a few commercials to avoid paying a subscription or rental fee.

Tesla has recalled more than 3,800 of its Cybertruck models following complaints that the accelerator pedal is at risk of getting stuck, US regulators have announced.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) had contacted the carmaker, founded and run by Elon Musk, about the issue earlier in the week.

That was after a video came to light, on the billionaire entrepreneur's X platform and TikTok, showing how a rubber cover attached to the accelerator could come loose, pinning the pedal down.

It has since been watched millions of times on both platforms.

Meta's AI has told a Facebook user it has a disabled child that was part of a New York gifted and talented programme.

An anonymous parent posted in a private parenting group, asking for advice on which New York education programme would suit their child.

They described the child as '2e' which stands for twice-exceptional and means they have exceptional ability and also a disability.

"Does anyone here have experience with a '2e' child in any of the NYC G&T [Gifted & Talented] programs?" the user asked.

"Would love to hear your experience, good or bad or anything in between."

Instead of getting a response from another parent, Meta's AI replied.

"I have a child who is also 2e and has been part of the NYC G&T program," it began.

People who are fit to work but do not accept job offers will have their benefits taken away after 12 months, the prime minister has pledged.

Outlining his plans to reform the welfare system if the Conservatives win the next general election, Rishi Sunak said "unemployment support should be a safety net, never a choice" as he promised to "make sure that hard work is always rewarded".

Mr Sunak said his government would be "more ambitious about helping people back to work and more honest about the risk of over-medicalising the everyday challenges and worries of life" by introducing a raft of measures in the next parliament.

Building society reforms - backed by MPs - could help people trying to get on to the property ladder.

The Building Societies Act 1986 (Amendment) Bill is closer to becoming law after its third reading was unopposed in the Commons.

The idea is to expand societies' lending capacity via modernisation.

Tory MP Peter Gibson the bill would help with "cutting red tape" and removing "outdated bureaucratic governance systems not faced by the big banks".

It follows a government consultation which looked at how to allow building societies to "compete on a more level playing field with banks".

The bill is government-backed and Labour is behind it too, saying the changes will support "more working people to become homeowners".

Labour's Julie Elliott, the bill's sponsor, said: "It is important to acknowledge that whilst the housing sector has recovered significantly since the record low mortgage approvals during the COVID pandemic, approvals currently are still below that which we saw before the pandemic.

"That is why I think a bill like this, which gives more choice to the building society sector to operate in the interests of its members, is a good thing."

Treasury minister Gareth Davies offered the government's support and said the bill would help ensure the "future growth and success" of the building society sector.

Labour's shadow Treasury minister Darren Jones said building societies "direct a significant proportion of their lending to first-time buyers" and the bill "could unlock significant additional lending capacity".

The bill will undergo further scrutiny in the House of Lords.

There was a worse than expected performance for retail sales last month, defying predictions of a consumer-led pick up from recession for the UK economy.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported sales volumes were flat in March, following an upwardly revised figure of 0.1% for the previous month.

It said sales at non-food stores helped offset declines at supermarkets.

Sales of fuel rose by 3.2%.

ONS senior statistician Heather Bovill said of the overall picture: "Retail sales registered no growth in March.

"Hardware stores, furniture shops, petrol stations and clothing stores all reported a rise in sales.

"However, these gains were offset by falling food sales and in department stores where retailers say higher prices hit trading.

"Looking at the longer-term picture, across the latest three months retail sales increased after a poor Christmas."

While the performance will not damage the  expected exit from recession  during the first quarter of the year, it suggests that consumers are still carefully managing their spending.

While the  cost of living crisis  - exacerbated by the  Bank of England's interest rate rises  to push  inflation  down - has severely damaged budgets, wage growth has been rising at a faster pace than prices since last summer.

Separate ONS data this week has shown the annual rate of inflation at 3.2% - with wages growing at a rate of 6% when the effects of bonuses are stripped out.

Economists widely believe consumer spending power will win through as the year progresses, despite borrowing costs remaining at elevated levels.

"Misleading" labelling in some supermarkets means shoppers may not know where their food comes from, Which? has said.

Loose cauliflowers, red cabbage, courgettes and onions at Sainsbury's, peppers, melons and mangoes at Asda, and spring onions at Aldi had no visible origin labelling on the shelf or the products themselves, the consumer organisation found during research.

Only 51% of people find origin information on groceries helpful, a survey found.

Two thirds (64%) said they would be more likely to buy a product labelled "British" than one that was not.

Almost three quarters (72%) said it was important to know where fresh meat comes from, while 51% said they wanted to know where processed and tinned meat comes from.

Under current rules, meat, fish, fresh fruit and vegetables, honey and wine should be labelled with the country or place of origin.

"Research has uncovered a surprising amount of inconsistent and misleading food labelling, suggesting that - even when the rules are properly adhered to - consumers aren't getting all the information they want about their food's origin," said Which? retail editor Ele Clark.

"Supermarkets should particularly focus on labelling loose fruit and vegetables more clearly."

An Aldi spokeswoman said: "We understand that our shoppers want to know where the food they buy comes from, and we work hard to ensure that all our labelling complies with the rules.

"When it comes to fresh fruit and veg, we are proud to support British farmers and aim to stock British produce whenever it's available. Customers understand that at this time of year that isn't always possible, but we remain firmly committed to supporting the British farming community."

Asda said: "We have stringent processes in place to ensure country of origin is clearly displayed at the shelf edge and on products themselves where applicable, at all our stores.

"We have reminded our colleagues at this particular store of these processes so that customers are able to clearly see the country of origin."

A spokesman for Iceland said: "At Iceland our products are great quality and value for customers and we follow UK government guidance on food labelling, including country of origin."

A Sainsbury's spokeswoman said: "We have processes in place to make sure country of origin information is clearly displayed on the product or shelf and we carry out regular checks working closely with our regulator, the Animal and Plant Health Agency."

Barclays has been criticised for making the "ludicrous" decision to limit how much cash its customers can deposit in a year.

Ron Delnevo from the Payment Choice Alliance said the move was a "disgrace" and accused the bank of trying to force businesses to stop accepting cash.

From July, the change will mean Barclays customers can only deposit up to £20,000 per calendar year into their personal accounts.

The limit will reset every January.

It comes after Natwest made a similar decision last year, capping deposits to £3,000 a day, or £24,000 in any 12-month period.

"The decision by Barclays is ludicrous. This is plainly an anti-cash move," Mr Delnevo told Sky News.

"It is trying to take free choice from people. It's like it is saying, 'if you are using cash, then we think you are a criminal'.

"It's a disgrace quite frankly and there is no excuse for it. It's just wrong."

Asked if he was concerned other banks could follow suit, he said: "Definitely."

He gave the example of someone selling a car for cash. "How would you deposit the money into your account?" he asked.

Barclays said the change was being made to help it identify "suspicious activity".

"We take financial crime and our responsibility to prevent money laundering seriously," a spokesperson said.

"We have contacted customers to let them know that from July we are making some changes to the amount of cash customers can deposit into their Barclays accounts.

"We have set the limit at an amount that will allow us to better identify suspicious activity, while still ensuring our customers have access to cash."

The UK's estimated 23 million pet owners are at risk of a new kind of scam, one that took nearly £240m in the first six months of last year.

Scammers are now targeting the most vulnerable owners – those who’ve lost their pets.

Fraudsters are turning to lost pet forums and websites to claim they've found missing pets, demanding a ransom payment for their return.

Figures from UK Finance reveal this type of fraud – known as Authorised Push Payment (APP), when a victim is tricked into sending money directly to a criminal’s account - cost British consumers £239.3m in the first six months of 2023.

James Jones, head of consumer affairs at Experian, has some tips on how to avoid the scam...

  • Never pay the ransom – If someone is demanding a large sum of money in exchange for your pet's safe return, call the police immediately. Never pay the money upfront, as it will most likely be a scam. Be sure to take a step back and analyse the situation.
  • Examine the photos - is it a fake? – In an era where the use of artificial intelligence to fabricate photos is becoming increasingly commonplace, spotting a fake is becoming more challenging. But if you do receive a suspicious photo, make sure to take a closer look to determine whether it is in fact your pet. To do this, check if the photo has been taken from your social media profile and reframed to pass as a recent photo. You should also check for any signs of photoshopping. This could be the way the image has been cut, or the lack of shadows. It is also always helpful to get a second opinion – what you might miss, another person could spot.
  • Spotting fabricated stories – Scammers may share specific personality traits you recognise about your pet to convince you they legitimately have it in their possession. However, they may be getting this information from adverts you’ve shared on missing pet websites, or even details shared about your pet on your social media profiles. Be extra cautious and question their authenticity.
  • Be careful not to overshare on social media – While sharing information of pets on social media channels is commonplace, this can make them a goldmine for fraudsters. Always be careful about posting personal details, such as your address, pet’s name, or your location in real time. This is all information a fraudster could use to their benefit. Even if you have a private account, you still need to be cautious, as fraudsters have sophisticated methods for obtaining personal information.
  • Avoid using your pet’s name as your password – The easiest password to remember is your pet’s name, but unfortunately fraudsters know this too. Of course, you need to be able to remember your passwords, but it’s vital not to make them too simple. The ideal password should contain a minimum of 10 characters using a mix of letters, numbers and symbols. As a rule of thumb, it’s also best to ensure you are using muti-factor authentication, when possible.

The British public donated some £13.9bn to charity last year, but higher earners who give to their chosen causes could be missing out on a tax break.

"Many may be missing out on the tax perks of giving to charity, which can help to reduce their tax bill and save them from tax traps," Charlene Young, pensions and savings expert at AJ Bell, said.

There is some £500m of unclaimed Gift Aid rebates - which you could be eligible for - according to data seen by AJ Bell.

In order to get to the bottom of this, we need an understanding of Gift Aid.

"Gift Aid is a tax incentive that gives a top up on donations from UK taxpayers to a UK registered charity or community amateur sports clubs (CASC)," Charlene explains.

Within the scheme, the government tops up the charity donation by 25% - turning a £100 donation into £125 for the charity or CASC.

"But there’s a tax break on offer for higher and additional rate taxpayers too - they can claim up to 20% or 25% on their donations," Charlene adds.

Not only does the scheme mean charities can access more money at no extra cost - higher band taxpayers can claim some cash back.

This table shows how much you can claim back...

"Claims are usually made via a self-assessment tax return, but you can ask HMRC for a P810 form to fill in if you don’t normally file a return. You can also backdate claims for up to four years, so it is worth looking into this as soon as possible," Charlene says.

Although 94% of higher earners donating to charity have heard about Gift Aid, only 52% are aware they could claim a tax rebate on their donations, according to HMRC data.

That leaves expected unclaimed rebates at around £500m.

Geoff, a higher rate UK taxpayer, pays £780 in charitable donations over the course of a year.

Gift aid tops this up to £975.

Geoff is eligible to claim back £195 (20% of £975) in tax relief from HMRC via self-assessment, or by contacting HMRC directly.

In total, this means the charity has received £975 - but it has only cost Geoff £585.

Avoiding tax traps

"If you're caught by tax traps, gift aid could help you lower your tax bill and put money towards good causes," Charlene says.

"You might be a parent who has gone over the £50,000 high income child benefit charge, meaning you'd start to lose child benefit [HICBC].

"Or if your earnings have breached £100,000 you start to lose your tax-free Personal Allowance at a rate of £1 for every £2, a whopping effective rate of tax of 60% on earnings between £100,000 and £125,140.

"Making a charity donation and claiming Gift Aid means the full value of the donation [what you pay plus the government top up] is deducted from the income that would otherwise count towards the £100,000 limit [or £50,000 for HICBC]."

The market reaction to Israel's attack on Iran is muted so far.

While Brent crude oil rose by 2% in response initially, it is currently just over 1% up on the day at $88 a barrel.

That is below where it started the week after Iran had launched its drone and missile strikes on Israel.

The future direction will probably depend on how Iran chooses to respond to events overnight.

Stock markets are also feeling some strain and, being Friday, we could see a rush to protect positions over the weekend later in the day.

Japan's Nikkei was 2.6% down though the Hang Seng was just 0.9% lower.

In Europe, the reaction was similar to that seen in Hong Kong.

The FTSE 100 fell 0.4% at the open - with small gains in energy stocks offsetting some of the wider hit to sentiment from events in the Middle East.

Travel-related stocks were seeing some of the worst pain due to the threat of disruption.

British Airways owner IAG shed 3.5% while easyJet was 2.3% off and Ryanair not far behind that figure.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without emptying your wallet.

In this series every Friday, we're trying to find the cheapest ways to identify the healthiest options in the supermarket.

We've asked  Sunna Van Kampen,  founder of  Tonic Health ,  who went viral on social media for reviewing supermarket products in the search of healthier choices, for his input.

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, but to help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

Today we're looking at ketchup - which contains a surprising amount of sugar.

What's the worry with sugar?

"Reducing added sugars in your diet can lead to significant health benefits, including weight loss and decreased risk of heart disease," Sunna says.

"But fear not, ketchup connoisseurs: there's a way to enjoy your sauce and look after your health too."

How much sugar?

The average bottle of ketchup has around 4g of sugar per tablespoon.

If you're having a generous dollop of ketchup three times a week, you're adding more than 600g of sugar to your diet each year from one condiment.

"That's a whole lot of sweet for something that's supposed to be savoury," Sunna says.

"Another way to look at it is that you're having a teaspoon of sugar drizzled over your French fries - it feels wrong, doesn't it?"

The good news is there's plenty of options.

Avoiding premium ketchups can save your wallet and your sugar intake - they tend to up sugar content by 35% to more than 30g per 100g.

A standard bottle of Heinz contains 22.8g of sugar per 100g.

"Without getting into the taste debate, Heinz's rival Hellman's comes up trumps for your health by lowering the sugar content to 18g per 100g," Sunna says.

Heinz has created two lower-sugar versions: a 50% less sugar option (at 11g per 100g) and Heinz's No Added Sugar & Salt (4.4g of sugar per 100g).

"But watch out here," Sunna says, "as they do add artificial sweeteners in their place (sucralose)".

In his view, there are two newer challenger brands that deserve a mention as they cut sugar without the artificial additives.

"Dr Wills Ketchup using dates instead of sugar (15g per 100g) and Hunter & Gather keep the sweet stuff out entirely (6g per 100g).

So, he says, there is "plenty to choose from to suite your taste buds and health needs".

What does that look like over time?

Making small changes for your health can build up to a big impact over the long term.

"Going from standard Heinz to the brand's no sugar option will save you more than 500g of sugar a year in your diet," Sunna says.

What's the cost?

"Surprisingly, opting for a healthier ketchup doesn't mean squeezing your wallet dry," Sunna says.

A bottle of Heinz No Added Sugar & Salt costs around £0.80 per 100g and is the most expensive.

The 50% less sugar version is cheaper at £0.54 per 100g.

That's only 4% more than the standard, more sugary version, which costs £0.52 per 100g.

"This way you'll save 32% on the price of your ketchup (compared with no sugar) and 50% of the sugar content for your health - that's a win-win," Sunna says.

"In the grand scheme of dietary changes, switching ketchup varieties might seem small. But it's these little tweaks that can add up to a big difference in your health."

The nutritionist's view -  from  Dr Laura Brown , senior lecturer in nutrition, food and health sciences at Teesside University

"I would say that yes, they are correct in that the focus should be health over money and the reduced sugar version does not make too much of a difference.

"Also, there is the option of making your own ketchup too, in which you could manipulate the ingredients to add more natural flavours that will reduce the need for the added sugar - provided it is consumed within a shorter space of time."

This week, we've been speaking to some of Britain's struggling unpaid carers, hearing at times heart-breaking accounts of their physical, emotional and financial struggles.

In our final instalment in the series, a woman who cares for her daughter, son and husband says it is a "lonely job" and you often feel "looked down on" as she urges the government to "look at the bigger picture" when it came to help.

"I care for three people but I'm allowed to get Carer's Allowance once. The allowance is deducted from my Universal Credit so in effect I do not get paid for caring at all." Suzanne Buckner, unpaid carer

Suzanne's daughter Charlotte, or Lottie as her mother and father Mark call her, was three when she was diagnosed with a neuroblastoma, a rare cancer that affects children and develops in early nerve cells, in 2010.

Her gruelling treatment left her with a number of healthcare problems, including the development of three benign tumours in her liver, non-autoimmune type 1, type 2 and type 3 diabetes and asplenia.

Charlotte, now 17, is also deaf and has severe back problems due to discs growing into her vertebrae.

"My daughter was told by her oncologist in December they didn't actually expect her to survive," Suzanne, 56, says.

Suzanne is also a carer for her son, 23, who has multiple complex conditions and her husband, 62, who has mental health conditions.

"It's an eclectic collection - one minute I'm a mental health nurse, then I'm dealing with behavioural problems and then it's just classic nurse," she says.

Suzanne receives universal credit of around £972 a month after her carer's allowance is deducted.

She says the carer's allowance earnings limit, set at £139 a week, means carers like her are "caught in this trap" where they can't earn above the limit for fear of losing their benefit money.

"I care for three people but I'm allowed to get carer's allowance once. The allowance is deducted from my universal credit so in effect I do not get paid for caring at all," she says.

"It's ridiculous because if I handed my family over to the state, can you imagine how much money it would cost?

"I sometimes think central government does not have the ability to calculate or look at the bigger picture."

Recently, Suzanne got "quite poorly" and was told to go to A&E after she was unable to get an appointment with her GP.

"I thought 'I can't go to A&E I've got to look after my family'. I think that's another area that's not looked at - the health and wellbeing of carers. It's a lonely job," she says.

"Even though I was sick, I was making sure Lottie was having her injections and medicines. You can't afford to feel.

"Emotionally it is hard because sometimes you can't fix the problem. There isn't a magic solution and you can't make a phone call.

"It doesn't matter to a degree how much money you've got, it  isn't going to go away. If someone is poorly, they are poorly."

Suzanne used to run several companies, including an advertising agency, before becoming a carer for her family and now does telecoms regulation consultancy work when she can.

Holding down a 9-5 job is "not possible for most carers".

"Lottie getting cancer taught me so much about life - do not plan," she says.

"If she had to go to hospital today that means I have to change all the tutors she's having and it can happen overnight.

"Having a child with cancer is even more of a lonely thing because it's quite a rare thing. If she gets sick, life just turns upside down."

After undergoing chemotherapy, Lottie was left with a low blood temperature and therefore keeping the house warm is important, Suzanne says, which increases heating costs.

The costs can go up further if Charlotte needs to go to hospital as this means trips "all over the country" to hospitals in Birmingham, the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, increasing fuel and food costs.

'Less of a citizen'

Suzanne says there is "absolutely" a pressure on her finances and if it were not for the inheritance her mother left her, she "wouldn't be living".

"Both my husband's parents are dead and my parents are dead. I don't have siblings that live close by so I don't have any support," she says.

"I think the problem is, unless you've walked in somebody's shoes, you really don't understand."

Suzanne says there are some things central and local government could do to help, such as giving personal budgets through direct payments, which would allow carers to choose the support and help they needed.

"Personally I feel you get looked down on. People think you're only a carer, you get benefits, you're less of a citizen - that really annoys me," she says.

"I think the benefits system doesn't work. I'm not suggesting that all carers in the UK should be paid a certain amount, but they should be paid equitably so that people don't get to the point mentally where they say 'I can't do this anymore'.

"There need to be some serious, high-level debates and they need to involve carers in those debates.

"The government need to look at how much money they are wasting in the care system by doing the wrong things."

Speaking of her daughter's battles, Suzanne adds: " I don't know how she copes - I think she's an inspiration.

"She has to be pulled and tugged by doctors and have test after test, and she tolerates it all. Sometimes when I'm watching her have these tests I think to myself 'I don't know how she does it'".

Charity calls for review

Helen Walker, chief executive at Carers UK, says it is in the state's interest to support unpaid carers because "if a carer goes down then the state has to look after two people".

If you have to give up work to care, she says, "you are going to find yourself spiralling into poverty".

"Carer's allowance hasn't had a fundamental review for years so we would like a review looking at who is eligible for it, how it works and an increase to the amount," she adds.

"And also there needs to be an increase to the amount of hours you can work while caring.

"Social care is underfunded so it needs some real investment in order for unpaid carers to be able to care safely and well.

"What many carers will say is they need a break. It's not that they don't want to care, it's that they are exhausted. They are at breaking point."

A government spokesperson said: "Unpaid carers play a vital role in the lives of their family and friends, which is why from April we're boosting carer's allowance meaning carers receive an extra £1,500 a year compared to 2010.

"Those in low income households may also be eligible for additional financial support such as universal credit."

‘Civil War’ Review: We Have Met the Enemy and It Is Us. Again.

In Alex Garland’s tough new movie, a group of journalists led by Kirsten Dunst, as a photographer, travels a United States at war with itself.

‘Civil War’ | Anatomy of a Scene

The writer and director alex garland narrates a sequence from his film..

“My name is Alex Garland and I’m the writer director of ‘Civil War’. So this particular clip is roughly around the halfway point of the movie and it’s these four journalists and they’re trying to get, in a very circuitous route, from New York to DC, and encountering various obstacles on the way. And this is one of those obstacles. What they find themselves stuck in is a battle between two snipers. And they are close to one of the snipers and the other sniper is somewhere unseen, but presumably in a large house that sits over a field and a hill. It’s a surrealist exchange and it’s surrounded by some very surrealist imagery, which is they’re, in broad daylight in broad sunshine, there’s no indication that we’re anywhere near winter in the filming. In fact, you can kind of tell it’s summer. But they’re surrounded by Christmas decorations. And in some ways, the Christmas decorations speak of a country, which is in disrepair, however silly it sounds. If you haven’t put away your Christmas decorations, clearly something isn’t going right.” “What’s going on?” “Someone in that house, they’re stuck. We’re stuck.” “And there’s a bit of imagery. It felt like it hit the right note. But the interesting thing about that imagery was that it was not production designed. We didn’t create it. We actually literally found it. We were driving along and we saw all of these Christmas decorations, basically exactly as they are in the film. They were about 100 yards away, just piled up by the side of the road. And it turned out, it was a guy who’d put on a winter wonderland festival. People had not dug his winter wonderland festival, and he’d gone bankrupt. And he had decided just to leave everything just strewn around on a farmer’s field, who was then absolutely furious. So in a way, there’s a loose parallel, which is the same implication that exists within the film exists within real life.” “You don’t understand a word I say. Yo. What’s over there in that house?” “Someone shooting.” “It’s to do with the fact that when things get extreme, the reasons why things got extreme no longer become relevant and the knife edge of the problem is all that really remains relevant. So it doesn’t actually matter, as it were, in this context, what side they’re fighting for or what the other person’s fighting for. It’s just reduced to a survival.”

A blunt, gut-twisting work of speculative fiction, “Civil War” opens with the United States at war with itself — literally, not just rhetorically. In Washington, D.C., the president is holed up in the White House; in a spookily depopulated New York, desperate people wait for water rations. It’s the near-future, and rooftop snipers, suicide bombers and wild-eyed randos are in the fight while an opposition faction with a two-star flag called the Western Forces, comprising Texas and California — as I said, this is speculative fiction — is leading the charge against what remains of the federal government. If you’re feeling triggered, you aren’t alone.

It’s mourning again in America, and it’s mesmerizingly, horribly gripping. Filled with bullets, consuming fires and terrific actors like Kirsten Dunst running for cover, the movie is a what-if nightmare stoked by memories of Jan. 6. As in what if the visions of some rioters had been realized, what if the nation was again broken by Civil War, what if the democratic experiment called America had come undone? If that sounds harrowing, you’re right. It’s one thing when a movie taps into childish fears with monsters under the bed; you’re eager to see what happens because you know how it will end (until the sequel). Adult fears are another matter.

In “Civil War,” the British filmmaker Alex Garland explores the unbearable if not the unthinkable, something he likes to do. A pop cultural savant, he made a splashy zeitgeist-ready debut with his 1996 best seller “The Beach,” a novel about a paradise that proves deadly, an evergreen metaphor for life and the basis for a silly film . That things in the world are not what they seem, and are often far worse, is a theme that Garland has continued pursuing in other dark fantasies, first as a screenwriter (“ 28 Days Later ”), and then as a writer-director (“ Ex Machina ”). His résumé is populated with zombies, clones and aliens, though reliably it is his outwardly ordinary characters you need to keep a closer watch on.

By the time “Civil War” opens, the fight has been raging for an undisclosed period yet long enough to have hollowed out cities and people’s faces alike. It’s unclear as to why the war started or who fired the first shot. Garland does scatter some hints; in one ugly scene, a militia type played by a jolting, scarily effective Jesse Plemons asks captives “what kind of American” they are. Yet whatever divisions preceded the conflict are left to your imagination, at least partly because Garland assumes you’ve been paying attention to recent events. Instead, he presents an outwardly and largely post-ideological landscape in which debates over policies, politics and American exceptionalism have been rendered moot by war.

‘Civil War’ Is Designed to Disturb You

A woman with a bulletproof vest that says “Press” stands in a smoky city street.

One thing that remains familiar amid these ruins is the movie’s old-fashioned faith in journalism. Dunst, who’s sensational, plays Lee, a war photographer who works for Reuters alongside her friend, a reporter, Joel (the charismatic Wagner Moura). They’re in New York when you meet them, milling through a crowd anxiously waiting for water rations next to a protected tanker. It’s a fraught scene; the restless crowd is edging into mob panic, and Lee, camera in hand, is on high alert. As Garland’s own camera and Joel skitter about, Lee carves a path through the chaos, as if she knows exactly where she needs to be — and then a bomb goes off. By the time it does, an aspiring photojournalist, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), is also in the mix.

The streamlined, insistently intimate story takes shape once Lee, Joel, Jessie and a veteran reporter, Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), pile into a van and head to Washington. Joel and Lee are hoping to interview the president (Nick Offerman), and Sammy and Jessie are riding along largely so that Garland can make the trip more interesting. Sammy serves as a stabilizing force (Henderson fills the van with humanizing warmth), while Jessie plays the eager upstart Lee takes under her resentful wing. It’s a tidily balanced sampling that the actors, with Garland’s banter and via some cozy downtime, turn into flesh-and-blood personalities, people whose vulnerability feeds the escalating tension with each mile.

As the miles and hours pass, Garland adds diversions and hurdles, including a pair of playful colleagues, Tony and Bohai (Nelson Lee and Evan Lai), and some spooky dudes guarding a gas station. Garland shrewdly exploits the tense emptiness of the land, turning strangers into potential threats and pretty country roads into ominously ambiguous byways. Smartly, he also recurrently focuses on Lee’s face, a heartbreakingly hard mask that Dunst lets slip brilliantly. As the journey continues, Garland further sketches in the bigger picture — the dollar is near-worthless, the F.B.I. is gone — but for the most part, he focuses on his travelers and the engulfing violence, the smoke and the tracer fire that they often don’t notice until they do.

Despite some much-needed lulls (for you, for the narrative rhythm), “Civil War” is unremittingly brutal or at least it feels that way. Many contemporary thrillers are far more overtly gruesome than this one, partly because violence is one way unimaginative directors can put a distinctive spin on otherwise interchangeable material: Cue the artful fountains of arterial spray. Part of what makes the carnage here feel incessant and palpably realistic is that Garland, whose visual approach is generally unfussy, doesn’t embellish the violence, turning it into an ornament of his virtuosity. Instead, the violence is direct, at times shockingly casual and unsettling, so much so that its unpleasantness almost comes as a surprise.

If the violence feels more intense than in a typical genre shoot ’em up, it’s also because, I think, with “Civil War,” Garland has made the movie that’s long been workshopped in American political discourse and in mass culture, and which entered wider circulation on Jan. 6. The raw power of Garland’s vision unquestionably owes much to the vivid scenes that beamed across the world that day when rioters, some wearing T-shirts emblazoned with “ MAGA civil war ,” swarmed the Capitol. Even so, watching this movie, I also flashed on other times in which Americans have relitigated the Civil War directly and not, on the screen and in the streets.

Movies have played a role in that relitigation for more than a century, at times grotesquely. Two of the most famous films in history — D.W. Griffith’s 1915 racist epic “The Birth of a Nation” (which became a Ku Klux Klan recruitment tool) and the romantic 1939 melodrama “Gone With the Wind” — are monuments to white supremacy and the myth of the Southern Lost Cause. Both were critical and popular hits. In the decades since, filmmakers have returned to the Civil War era to tell other stories in films like “Glory,” “Lincoln” and “Django Unchained” that in addressing the American past inevitably engage with its present.

There are no lofty or reassuring speeches in “Civil War,” and the movie doesn’t speak to the better angels of our nature the way so many films try to. Hollywood’s longstanding, deeply American imperative for happy endings maintains an iron grip on movies, even in ostensibly independent productions. There’s no such possibility for that in “Civil War.” The very premise of Garland’s movie means that — no matter what happens when or if Lee and the rest reach Washington — a happy ending is impossible, which makes this very tough going. Rarely have I seen a movie that made me so acutely uncomfortable or watched an actor’s face that, like Dunst’s, expressed a nation’s soul-sickness so vividly that it felt like an X-ray.

Civil War Rated R for war violence and mass death. Running time: 1 hour 49 minutes. In theaters.

An earlier version of this review misidentified an organization in the Civil War in the movie. It is the Western Forces, not the Western Front.
