Professional Writing Skills

What is the Creative writing

Creative writing is any writing that goes outside the bounds of normal professional , journalistic , academic , or technical forms of literature, typically identified by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics . Due to the looseness of the definition, it is possible for writing such as feature stories to be considered creative writing, even though they fall under journalism, because the content of features is specifically focused on narrative and character development. Both fictional and non-fictional works fall into this category, including such forms as novels , biographies , short stories , and poems . In the academic setting, creative writing is typically separated into fiction and poetry classes, with a focus on writing in an original style, as opposed to imitating pre-existing genres such as crime or horror . Writing for the screen and stage— screenwriting and playwriting —are often taught separately, but fit under the creative writing category as well.

Creative writing can technically be considered any writing of original composition . In this sense, creative writing is a more contemporary and process-oriented name for what has been traditionally called literature , including the variety of its genres . In her work, Foundations of Creativity , Mary Lee Marksberry references Paul Witty and Lou LaBrant's Teaching the People's Language to define creative writing. Marksberry notes:

Creative and Professional in UAEU

Technical and Professional Writing is part of our effort to collapse the better and more relevant aspects of the Writing Minor into the Language Minor (see proposed amendments to the Minor below). The idea is to help springboard students into professional life in ways that enhance verbal and text-based literacies and prepare them for the kinds of discursive and communicative acts they will likely encounter in their professions. The requirement of two 400-level courses in a Minor was, we felt, off-putting to potential Minors. 450 and 452 will stand as options to each other in the Minor—while both include elements of both textual and verbal literacy, each has its own focus, which allows students to choose this vital 400-level requirement according to their interests or strengths.

Program Objectives

  • Develop fiction/non-fiction writing and publication skills.
  • Develop language editing skills to a professional standard.
  • Apply electronic publishing skills.
  • Apply effective group management skills

List of best creative writing courses in Dubai

What Is Creative Writing?

Creative writing is a form of writing where imagination and out-of-the-box thinking play a key role. This form of writing can generally be seen in short stories, poems, novels, etc. where the emphasis is to engage the reader. These are generally fictional in nature, which means unlike professional writing, journalism, and technical form of writing which communicate about real-life situations and matter, creative writing works on narratives and characters that require imagination and out-of-the-box thinking.

The job of a creative writer is to paint a picture for its readers, an image of a new different world where possibilities are unlimited. A creative writer can be compared to a window that shows the vibrance of life.

Types Of Creative Writing

Creative writing is an umbrella of a variety of writing styles that vary from poems to full-fledged novels.  Though all the forms are way different from one another they have a common factor of creativity in them. There are no strict rules per se but some fact-checking and research are required to make your story more credible. Imagination is crucial but it also requires certain skills that can be learnt easily via creative writing courses in Dubai.  These forms of writing come in a variety of genres and specializations to choose from. Let’s take a look at them.

Poetry – It is the simplest and oldest form of style of writing. This diverse set of writing can vary from simple nursery rhymes to advanced-level poetry such as The Odyssey. It is a great starting point for freshers. It sharpens observatory skills and has a single point of view. It has the capability to bring out the deepest of emotions using simple language.

Novels – This is the most commonly used style of writing. When we talk about creative writing, this style of writing is the foremost style that comes to mind. Simply put, novels are collections of words used to portray a detailed image. It is a form of writing that elaborates scene by scene each emotion, character, and narrative, so much so that one can picturise the entire scene vividly. There is an entire range of genres to choose from romantic, thriller, and horror. One can choose a genre as per interest and expertise.

Short Fiction – Short fiction can be a great starting point for those writers who initially find it difficult to paint a vivid and detailed picture to express their stories. These are simple in narration yet emotionally evolved story writing patterns. Short stories or short fiction are often a starting point for readers as well. The word count for short fiction ranges between 1000 to 10,000 words.

Plays and Screen Plays – This form of writing is most useful for those who plan to establish a career in theatre, drama, or movies. Plays have been written centuries ago and are still popular these days. They are great ways to bring life into a simple story. In order to write a compelling screenplay, the writer must think out of the box and emphasize character development and dialogues.

Song Lyrics – If you love poetry, it is likely that you will eventually fall for song lyrics as well. This form of writing is used in movies, series, or albums. These simple words synced with music can create wonders. However, the task of synchronizing words to music can become a challenge. While writing the lyrics, the writer needs to match his thoughts to the emotions of the targeted audience as well.

Journal and Diaries – A journal or a diary is a written account of life from your own perspective. Young writers are often advised to write dairies as they act as a great way of expressing emotions and creating an account of events in life. Maintaining a journal improves the observation skills, vocabulary skills, and narrative of a writer. It is often said that journal writing solves a lot of problems as it offers creative solutions. It is up to an individual whether to make the account private or publish it. One of the most famous journals ever published is The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, which portrays the events in a Jewish girl’s life during World War II.

Personal Essays – Personal essays or more commonly known as autobiographies are a form of creative writing where the objective is to share one’s life story with a message in mind. However, the key note here is that this form of storytelling is purely non-fiction.

Letters – Letters and Journals are similar in many ways except that letters dig deeper into the personal accounts and conversations between two individuals. This is a non-fiction form of writing which is highly focused on its targeted audience. One of the great examples is Letters From a Father to His Daughter by Jawaharlal Nehru, which accounts for a series of letters written by J.L. Nehru for his daughter Indira Gandhi. This book covers an array of topics ranging from education to life lessons to memories.

Illustrated Narratives – Illustrated Narratives or comics are a form of creative writing where a lot of graphical images are involved. It is like a drama written in the form of dialogue. The emphasis here is mostly on dialogue delivery and pictures. This type of visual storytelling can be easily found on newspaper clippings itself (though in a very concise manner). These are entertaining and effective ways of conveying a message and storytelling. Examples include Garfield and Calvin and Hobbes from newspapers and Superman, and Batman in detailed books.

Elements Of Creative Writing

We have just learned about the major forms of creative writing, now we will discuss the common elements of creative writing forms. These are the basics of creative writing which are taught in detail in various creative writing courses in Dubai. A strong narrative, character development, and an underlying message or theme are the three core elements of the art of creative writing .

Narrative – Narrative means the basic plot of the story. A strong plot enables character formation in the story. A writer must attempt to create a strong plot that is unique. The storyline does not have to be too dramatic or too strong but it must be able to connect with readers.

Character Development – Character development revolves around introducing your character and evolving it over the course as per the requirement of the narrative. Detailed character development helps the reader to connect with the character and the narrative. Deeper the connection, stimulating the storyline.

Underlying message / Theme – The underlying message or theme of the creative piece is the ultimate message which the writer/author is trying to express via the story. Some individuals are of the viewpoint that the writer has a theme decided from the very beginning of the writing process but many feel that the process is writing is a creative process that evolves as we move along, hence the theme or underlying message could not be predefined.

Scope Of Creative Writing

The use of metaphor and imagery can enhance the engagement chances drastically.

Research – Research is the first and most important task for a creative writer. In order to present information to our readers, it is necessary to do some deep research on the subject matter. The facts need to be checked and verified to ensure credibility at our end. Thorough research skills include checking the source of the information and verifying the credibility of the source.

Editing – Once the writing process is over, it is important to revisit the content critically in order to identify the errors (grammatical and spelling). One shall also attempt to identify the tone and effectiveness of the content. This is the time to match the expectation and the result. A thorough scrutiny of the piece ensures quality content and self-confidence.

Motivation – Creative writing is a process that comes in its own time. Sometimes an idea may strike immediately while other times it may become difficult to get a direction. Hence, motivation and self-sufficiency are key soft skills that every creative writer must have in order to survive in the profession in the long run.

Punctuality – Though punctuality is less of a skill and more of a lifestyle choice, it is crucial for the long-run survival and growth of a writer. He/she must be aware of the given timelines for the article and must adhere to them as well. It is vital to divide your time on an hourly basis for various activities which include brainstorming, research, writing, editing, proofreading, and submission.

Dubai International Program for Writing, launched in October 2013, is one of the most innovative approaches that contributes to enriching the intellectual and literary movement in the UAE and worldwide.

The program aims to empower and encourage young talents who have displayed a flair for writing in various fields of knowledge from science and research to literature, novel and poetry and help them reach the world.

Presently, the program includes four categories for young talents: Writing, Exchange of writers, My Story (Qesaty) Competition, Translation), and there are plans to include more categories.

First Category: Writing

A panel of writing and publishing experts assesses the work and written samples submitted by youngsters interested in joining the program, according to specific criteria based on talent and language skills. Talented writers who pass the evaluation stage join specialized training programs in each field of writing (fiction, literature, short story, children’s books, science, research, history, studies and feature articles) under the supervision of the finest Arab and international trainers. After the completion of the required training courses, MBRF will publish the works of the candidates in cooperation with established publishing houses inside and outside the UAE.

Second Category: Exchange of Writers

“Exchange of Writers” is an idea based on partnership agreements between the MBRF and international institutions. It includes a competition between young writers in the UAE and other countries, whereby each team stays in the country of the other team for a whole month to experience a different lifestyle and project it on the reality where they grew up. This would enhance their awareness of diverse cultures and civilizations, as they convey their deeper experiences and insights about their stay to the readers, through their literary works that reflect the reality of these experiences.

This cooperation will lead to the publication of books in Arabic and English and in the language of the participants from other countries, confirming the value of knowledge, cooperation and the unity of humans. Two stages of writers’ exchangewere organized with Japan and Germany, and several talents were trained under the supervision of many instructors. Additionally, two stages of book exchange were also organized with Japan and Germany.

Third (Emerging) category: My Story (Qesaty)

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, has launched the short story contest “Qesaty” to promote Arabic language and arts among prep and secondary school students, as well as faculty members and administrators in the UAE. This aims to draw attention to the building of the folk tale, the dissemination of cultural values among the members of society, the preservation of oral cultural heritage, and the consolidation of the popular heritage in the hearts of the people of the state.

Fourth Category: Translation

Aims to qualify and train a generation of young professionals in the field of translating various books and publications. The workshop seeks to attract young talents who will be selected based on their previous experience in the field of translation and will be placed in a five-month intensive course, delivered by a group of instructors specialized in translating literary works, as well as business and and management books. At the end of the workshop, the Foundation issues a collection of books translated by the participants.

‘The book was like a bomb dropping’ … Natasha Jayetileke and Dee Ahluwalia rehearse The Buddha of Suburbia.

‘Although I’m tetraplegic, I’ve started to feel normal’: Hanif Kureishi on staging The Buddha of Suburbia

As his coming-of-age rollercoaster hits the stage, the novelist talks about the boredom of hospitals, how Britain has changed since Buddha – and why shouting at his kids is a great way to write blogs

I t’s been an unfathomably difficult 18 months for Hanif Kureishi . In 2022, the esteemed British writer went to Rome with his wife for Christmas, where he fainted and fell. When he woke up in a pool of blood he had lost the use of his hands, arms and legs. For more than a year, he was confined to hospital beds, questioned and prodded by doctors and nurses. He couldn’t sit, he couldn’t walk, and he couldn’t pick up a pen to write.

So I’m struck by the optimism and humour of the man speaking to me over Zoom this morning. When I join the call, Kureishi is sitting erectly in his kitchen and joking with theatre director Emma Rice about their new stage adaptation of his novel The Buddha of Suburbia, which opens at the RSC’s Swan theatre this week. It turns out the long months of convalescence – Kureishi has spent time in five hospitals, undergone spinal surgery, and only returned to his home last December – haven’t dampened his creative spirit.

“I’ve had a lot of time to think,” he says. “Particularly when I was in hospital and it was so boring. Hours and hours of the day would go by with literally nothing for me to do. I can’t use my hands. I can’t play with my phone. I can’t play music. I can’t send emails to people. I’m just sitting staring at the wall. But staring at the wall is a very good way of generating creativity.”

Kureishi now uses a motorised wheelchair and has a carer, meaning he has only made it to three rehearsals, yet the project has renewed his sense of purpose. “It’s really cheered me up that Emma is doing this play,” the 69-year-old says in his typically wry and concise manner. “It makes me very happy that my work is still alive after I nearly died. It also seems amazing that this book has survived for so long, that the story, the politics, the social background and culture are still of interest to people.”

‘It makes me very happy that my work is still alive after I nearly died’ … Kureishi, with his son Kier.

Published in 1990, Kureishi’s debut novel was a sensation, praised by readers for its relatability and by critics for its satirical humour and social commentary. The semi-autobiographical story follows Karim Amir, a mixed-race teenager desperate to escape Bromley for a more exciting life in a less suburban part of London. Over the course of five years, Karim navigates his relationships with friends and family – including his father, a comical guru-like figure who teaches his neighbours about Buddhist discipline – while experiencing a range of sexual and social awakenings.

“It’s rather like what The Catcher in the Rye was for young people in the US,” Kureishi muses. “There’s something about Karim’s voice , his naivety, his vulnerability, and the idea of this kid emerging from a suburban house into a world of ambition and politics and sexuality that is very seductive. Everyone can identify with it.”

Karim faces hurdles in the book that mirror Kureishi’s own – like having to juggle two worlds and cultures, the Indian and English. Kureishi’s father came from a wealthy Indian background, moved to Pakistan after partition and then to London, where he met Kureishi’s English mother. Kureishi was the only child of colour in his school in the 1960s and endured racism and xenophobia. He was 14 when Enoch Powell made his “terrifying” rivers of blood speech .

In response, the youngster turned to books, music and fashion as a means of escape, which in turn equipped him with an ability to capture the cultural and social environment around him. For his efforts, Buddha won the Whitbread award for best first novel and was made into a BBC series soundtracked by fellow Bromley boy David Bowie . “There was one copy going round our school like contraband,” Zadie Smith once recalled.

“It’s one of the best modern stories there is,” says Rice, who was artistic director of Shakespeare’s Globe from 2016 to 2018 , before she founded the Wise Children theatre company. “It’s like a modern-day Hamlet. I read it when I was 23 and it blew my mind. It was like a bomb dropping culturally. It’s so funny, so political and so tender.”

‘After my first draft, Hanif told me I’d got it entirely wrong’ … director Emma Rice.

The pair’s collaboration should be distinctive. Kureishi, whose other notable works include the 1985 film My Beautiful Laundrette (earning him an Oscar nomination for the screenplay) and the 1998 novel Intimacy, which saw him described by the New York Times as a “postcolonial Philip Roth”. Meanwhile Rice, whose directorial credits include The Red Shoes and Wuthering Heights , has been called the “Wes Anderson of the theatre world” for her idiosyncrasies.

During our hour-long conversation, they discuss the difficulty and joy of trying to distill a novel into a theatre experience. “After my first draft, Hanif told me I’d got it entirely wrong,” Rice says. “He’s consistently said the story’s got to be political and funny.”

Rereading the book, I am struck by how relevant it still feels, despite ending on the brink of Thatcher’s victory. There are numerous parallels between today’s society and the Britain of the 1970s, when inflation was high, workers were striking, and people took to the streets in protest against a government that ignored them. Kureishi acknowledges this but is quick to highlight some major differences.

“Everyone’s much more pessimistic now,” he says. “I think people in the 70s really believed in the future and were quite optimistic about it, certainly with regards to music, fashion, the media and photography. Karim and his friend Charlie really believe they can make it, that they can be pop stars. But I don’t think my kids are optimistic like that about Britain and the future at all.”

Soundtracked by Bowie … Naveen Andrews, Roshan Seth and Susan Fleetwood in the 1993 BBC adaptation.

The world, Kureishi says, “is more likely to make you crazy” now. “People are aware that the issues facing us are so overwhelming, like climate change.” He lists other problems to do with the lack of social mobility, the failure of the NHS and the lack of housebuilding. “One of the things you notice about the young people in Buddha is they never talk about money. They don’t want to be rich, they want to lead fulfilling lives. But that’s changed. My kids and their friends talk about money all the time.”

Though he calls the increased likelihood of a change in government “a shard of light”, he doubts “anybody is wildly optimistic about a Labour government”. The left, he says, “was much more active and coherent then. We don’t really have an organised left anymore.”

Rice also reflects on modern society’s sense of hopelessness. “I feel that we’ve been let down by everybody – by the church, by our politicians, by our TV presenters,” she says. “It’s hard to feel like anything we do at the moment can create change.”

What lights both Rice and Kureishi up, however, is the progress that’s been made in terms of identity and sexuality. When Buddha came out, it was still scandalous for Karim to want to “sleep with boys as well as girls”. “Now, it’s very liberating to see that there are so many new forms of sexuality; that the binary story just doesn’t provide enough opportunity,” Kureishi says. “It’s very creative and innovative. People are thinking and talking about gender, they’re exploring their own bodies and cultures.”

“Also, I don’t think people are pressured into having sex to the same extent that we were then, when it was considered to be almost revolutionary. When you think about what you do all day, you spend so little time actually having sex.” He smiles. “It only takes about five minutes.”

“I feel very optimistic watching my stepkids grow up,” adds Rice, “not labelling themselves in the way we did.”

And what of racism today? As Kureishi has noted, there aren’t gangs of skinheads pushing excrement through people’s doors any more. But some discourse remains familiar – the government is still tying itself in knots over asylum-seekers and immigration figures. It’s something the writer has been reflecting on in hospital.

“I could see that the NHS is entirely run by immigrants,” he says. “Most of the nurses doing the all-night and weekend shifts – and all the care workers – are recently arrived immigrants. If you cut that off, then you’re going to have an ageing population that isn’t going to be taken care of.” He calls this “a real dilemma” at the heart of Britain. “You can’t fill those institutions with indigenous people. It doesn’t work, everybody knows that. And sending a few people to Rwanda isn’t going to address the problem.”

How will they be invoking all of this in a stage play? “The sound design is really key. We’re using archive political footage,” Rice says. “I’ve also used a construct to make a bridge between the 70s and now: Karim speaks into a mic a bit like the early standup comedians, really telling the audience where the conflict was.”

Kureishi before his fall.

But for Kureishi, sound – and music in particular – has been a source of pain recently. When he guest-edited BBC Radio 4’s Today programme last year, he said he couldn’t bear to listen to music any more because “it would be too moving”. But with music being so interwoven into Karim’s story, did he find a way to cope? “I’ve gone back to music now,” he says gladly. “I just couldn’t listen to all the stuff I loved in that horrible, depressing atmosphere with nurses and doctors. But I’m back at home now, and I’ve got my kids, my friends and my world around me. I’m trying to resume my working life again.”

Kureishi has been working hard on physio and has gained some strength in his arms and legs, although he has been told by doctors that movement in the hands is the last thing to return. Still, he remains optimistic about his current situation. “Although I’m tetraplegic, I’ve started to feel like a normal person. Writing gives me a sense of self-esteem and dignity. That I’m not just a broken body. I still have health issues; every day is a lucky day for me. Working really keeps me believing in something worthwhile in my life.”

One of the things he’s working on is his forthcoming memoir Shattered , which is based on his writings on X and on his Substack, The Kureishi Chronicles . The posts began several days after the accident, when Kureishi was still in ICU and trying to make sense of what he calls his “Kafkaesque metamorphosis”. He began dictating his thoughts to his son Carlo, who duly transcribed them. Since then, the dispatches have attracted thousands of global subscribers – many of whom write to Kureishi about their own tragic experiences. His X following has quadrupled.

Just as he did when he was younger, Kureishi says he finds himself writing “to communicate with a wider world, with other people who will be sympathetic”.

‘There’s an immediacy to theatre’ … Deven Modha, Natasha Jayetileke and Tommy Belshaw as the rehearsals heat up.

“I really needed to do the blog,” he continues. “It’s a new way of writing for me because I have to dictate it to a member of my family – one of my sons or my partner Isabella. My kids call me The Great Dictator because I shout at them and they write it down. It’s like a spontaneous bop chain of words. You kick off and off you go – you don’t know what you’re going to say, and you make sense of it by the end. I’ve started to really enjoy writing in this way. I write much quicker. The other day I wrote for two hours, dictating, and I did 3,000 words, which is a shitload for me.”

The Buddha of Suburbia follows on the tail of a stage adaptation of My Beautiful Laundrette, which was revived at Leicester’s Curve theatre . I wonder what makes theatre the right medium to tell these stories? “Buddha is a love letter to theatre,” Rice says. “That’s what drew me to it. And there’s an immediacy and a humanity to theatre. You’re going to feel close to an orgy, close to a racist beating. You’ll feel the heat coming off the actors when they dance. Unlike TV, theatre also brings imagination and suggestion – the audience can go anywhere.”

“Writing, theatre, acting and music are really what we’re good at in this country,” concludes Kureishi. “That’s our reason to be optimistic.”

'Cloud seeding did not cause Dubai floods', expert says

17 April 2024

Expert comment from the University of Reading

Professor Maarten Ambaum, a meteorologist at the University of Reading who has studied rainfall patterns in the Gulf region , said: “This was an extremely heavy rainfall event which dumped a year’s worth of rain across a wide area in a single day. This part of the world is characterised by long periods without rain and then irregular, heavy rainfall, but even so, this was a very rare rainfall event. “These storms appear to be the result of a mesoscale convective system – a series of medium-sized thunderstorms caused by massive thunderclouds, formed as heat draws moisture up into the atmosphere. These can create large amounts of rain, and when they occur over a wide area and one after another, can lead to seriously heavy downpours. They can rapidly lead to surface water floods, as we have seen in places such as Dubai airport. “These types of intense rainfall events can be made more extreme due to climate change, as a warmer atmosphere will hold more water vapour. Climate scientists have been warning for many years that such extreme events will become more likely in a warmer climate and, indeed, we see this happening around us now. “The UAE does have an operational cloud seeding programme to enhance the rainfall in this arid part of the world, however, there is no technology in existence that can create or even severely modify this kind of rainfall event. Furthermore, no cloud seeding operations have taken place in this area recently. "Cloud seeding, as its name suggests, generally involves spreading fine particles into existing clouds into which conditions of wind, moisture and dust are insufficient to lead to rain. In this particular case, there would have been no benefit to seed these clouds as they were predicted to produce substantial rain anyway. “It’s also worth noting that forecasters, including the Global Flood Awareness System (Glofas) which is run by the European Commission as part of the Copernicus programme, were very accurately forecasting a high risk of floods across a wide area of the region a full week ago. Forecasting systems such as this use detailed observations of conditions in the sea, air and land, and combine them in forecast models to predict future flood events. If these models were predicting that floods were highly likely a week ago, it’s unlikely that humans could do much about it, other than prepare themselves to get out of the way.”

Professor Giles Harrison, Professor of Atmospheric Physics  at the University of Reading, said: "The UAE does do operational cloud seeding, but there is huge difference between what this can achieve – targeting individual, developing clouds with seeding material released from an aircraft – and the Dubai rainfall, which was associated with a large weather system advancing across the region.  "There is such a fundamental mismatch of scale in the processes involved that I can’t see how the rainfall and cloud seeding could be related. And there would also be no reason to attempt cloud seeding in these circumstances, given the advance forecast of heavy rain. "An increase in atmospheric moisture with a warmer climate has long been expected to lead to more extreme rainfall events."

Professor Suzanne Gray, Professor of Meteorology at the University of Reading , said:  “Satellite imagery suggests the flooding and rainstorms Dubai were caused by something called a mesoscale convective system.

“Mesoscale convective systems (MCSs) are what we get when lots of individual thunderstorms amalgamate to form a single large high-level cloud shield, typically hundreds of kilometres across, together with a large region of heavy rainfall.

“They are not rare events for the Middle East. A recent published study analysed 95 events that occurred over the southern Arabian Peninsula from 2000-2020 and found that they most often occur in March and April. A previous event in March 2016 caused more than 240 mm of rain in Dubai in just a few hours, similar to the totals being reported for this event. This study also found that these MCSs have increased in longevity over the UAE over this 21-year period.

“MCSs do occur in the UK, but typically just a couple of times a year during the warmer months when they are usually associated with a plume of warm air coming from Spain.”

Professor Hannah Cloke, Professor of Hydrology at the University of Reading, said:  " The pictures of the floods covering downtown Dubai are quite extraordinary. While massive floods like this have occurred in the past, the huge scale and intensity of the rainfall that caused it are exactly what we are seeing more of in our warmer world. If we don't rapidly curb warming by phasing out fossil fuels fast, we can expect to suffer more of these extreme floods in more parts of the world, more often.

"This is an extreme flash flood. Modern infrastructure in the developed Gulf states is built to withstand these types of events and drain standing surface water away. But with so much rain falling all at once, even carefully designed drainage systems will struggle to cope.

"Looking at the data from GloFAS, the Global Flood Awareness System, which is part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service of the European Commission, there was very good early warning of widespread floods up to a week ago. This shows just how important it is for early warning systems to be in place in all parts of the world, and for governments, businesses and individuals to know what to do in response to early warnings. Natural hazards like floods only become disasters when people are in the wrong place and the wrong time. Any loss of life due to flooding is tragic, but is very often avoidable if working systems are put in place to keep people safe."

For those who want exotic and modern dining experiences, they can eat in many exotic ways, such as eating inside a huge fish tank while the fish move from the bottom and the top. Which makes it a special and unique experience that children and adults enjoy a lot.

It is also possible to walk in it only and see the city shining with amazing lights that are there to break records only.

And if you look under your feet, you will find that the floor is made of glass, and you can see buildings and roads under your feet.

Therefore, Dubai represents a very wonderful source for tourism, entertainment or residence and trade.

My Favourite place Dubai essay

My favorite place in Dubai is Legoland. I love spending time in it and enjoying modern and exciting games. I had a lot of fun as soon as I walked in and saw the dinosaur in the foreground. I also enjoy water games a lot, I spend a lot of time in it.

I also love touring in the Bollywood Parks Dubai area. I really like the Indian atmosphere everywhere and the performances offered. I always prefer to go to this place because they always offer new dances.

The most beautiful thing about this place is that it is dedicated to many

activities, such as if you are a fan of walking and want to see a distinctive architectural character, you can tour Riverland Dubai and enjoy watching the lake and the architecture on both sides.

It is great that there are many different restaurants to suit everyone. I like to try a different and new restaurant every time.

I also love to ride the famous death train and other games that make me enjoy a lot and make me feel energetic and free. Indeed this is my favorite place that I hope to be in always.

Sydney Dance Company artistic director Rafael Bonachela talks to Virginia Trioli on Creative Types

Virginia Trioli and Rafael Bonachela, a 50-something, bald Spanish Australian man, lean against a ballet barre.

The puckish dancer and artistic director of the Sydney Dance Company, Rafael Bonachela, runs his hand over the top of his smooth head and laughs at the photo in front of us.

It's a youthful image of himself; all curls and coifs, there is hair just about everywhere. I look back at the shining pate of the current-day Bonachela: "Rafa, what happened to all your lovely hair?"

"That's what my mama would say! She would say, 'You had such beautiful hair.' I'm like, 'Yeah, it left me,'" he says with a smile.

"Rafa", as he's always been known back in Spain, is quick to laugh, quick to deflect and to find reasons to be grateful. A poor boy from a small town near Barcelona who scaled the heights of international contemporary dance, he knows what good fortune looks like.

I spend several days in the sunny company of Bonachela and his team, telling the story of how the Sydney-based but international company he leads has become one of the most revered in the dance community. He has taken a dedicated company of young Australian dancers onto some of the most important stages in the world, including Paris, New York and Moscow, and each year the company sells out its Sydney performances.

Virginia Trioli and Rafael Bonachela smile brightly, arms around each other, standing on a wharf.

"I've had 15 years in Australia. Fifteen years at the head of an incredible company with an incredible group of dancers that I knew I could take with me on this journey … and I never looked back," Bonachela says.

"I always lived off dancing and I'm still having an incredible time."

But there's a catch in his laughter. In the time I spend with this limber, always-smiling man, he tells a deeply painful story, one he shares with many other artistic young people who do not conform to the societal expectations of their time.

Bonachela says he was born to dance, and from a young age could not be deterred. But his father did not understand at that time, and, according to Rafa's brother Ivan, he never came to accept his son's passion.

Rafael Bonachela, a young Spanish Australian man, in a dance studio, his arms raised above his head.

"Father never supported him. He didn't believe in dance, in him, or in these dancing abilities. He was very sexist and he was very hard with Rafa," Ivan says.

Bonachela was driven from childhood to tell stories through human movement. There was no dance school in his town of La Garriga, and as the eldest of four boys, no older sister to lead the way to recitals and dance practice.

He begged his mum to buy him rainbow leg warmers and yellow tracksuits so he could lug his boom box into the streets and make up dances for local kids. His mother obliged, but his father was bewildered.

In the way of optimistic people who do not want to admit to the hurt they've experienced, Bonachela speaks mildly and lightly about his early years in La Garriga. Yes, there was teasing and even bullying; yes, some of the kids threw stones at him when he made his dances in the streets.

"But it was nothing that needed any trauma counselling," he says.

But the tension between Bonachela and his father was profound. His mother had to secretly take him to his dance classes and, in time, the pressure on the talented young dancer started to show.

"There was a lot of stress deciding I was going to become a dancer with what was expected of me," Bonachela recalls.

"My father was like, "I'm proud of you, but I cannot tell you and I'm going to make your life difficult.' And I was this 17-year-old who was starting to lose their hair."

The only way through it, Bonachela thought, was to leave Spain.

"I left. I went to London and I remember writing letters to my mother and my brothers, because everything was so difficult with Dad, saying, "Now that I'm not there, you can be a family,'" Bonachela says.

Bonachela made a family of his own, joining the famed Rambert Dance Company and finding community among other dancers. He was later chosen by Kylie Minogue to choreograph her iconic performance at the 2002 Brit Awards . She made Bonachela part of her family too, as her choreographer for the Fever tour.

"What we did for the Brits together — how would you not want more of that? He hadn't done anything like a tour for an artist; I hadn't had a choreographer like him. So it made perfect sense," Minogue recalls from London.

"I've been able to see some of what he's done in recent years and he's just telling more and more stories with his voice through dance."

Kylie Minogue and Rafael Bonachela are smiling brightly with their arms around one another. They both have blue make-up on.

Bonachela went on to work for artists including Tina Turner and Primal Scream, and designers including Hugo Boss and Jaguar. In 2009, he was offered the role of artistic director at Sydney Dance Company, effectively defining contemporary dance in Australia.

"I'm so lucky. They are not just incredibly highly trained individuals, but also dancers that have open minds. I call it open minds and intelligent bodies. I want them to thrive in collaborating," Bonachela says.

His most recent work re-embraces his history and culture in a way he never thought he'd be ready for. Somos, a series of intimate solos, duets and trios, is directly influenced by Spanish music and dance. It powerfully echoes elements of flamenco and incorporates Latin singers and music, and it represents a significant artistic shift for the choreographer.

On stage, Liam Green, shirtless, with bleached hair, dips Emily Seymour. She has one leg extended into the air.

"When I left Spain I didn't want anything to do with it … I had to close off that chapter and I had to remember the best that I could of that time. You need to let go of it to be able to have a full life. I don't want those things from childhood to stop me from being a good and full person," Bonachela says.

Bonachela didn't speak to his father for many years, seeing him only once just before he died. Somos, he says, is a kind of reconciliation, and a homecoming.

"I've allowed myself to be Spanish again," he says.

Hillary Clinton and Malala Yousafzai producing. An election coming. ‘Suffs’ has timing on its side

After a successful run at the Public Theater, “Suffs” makes the move to Broadway. At a recent preview of the show, cast members Nikki M. James and Jenn Colella talked about Shaina Taub’s buzzy musical, and the show’s high-profile producers. (April 17)

NEW YORK (AP) — Shaina Taub was in the audience at “Suffs,” her buzzy and timely new musical about women’s suffrage, when she spied something that delighted her.

It was intermission, and Taub, both creator and star, had been watching her understudy perform at a matinee preview last week. Suddenly, she saw audience members searching the Wikipedia pages of key figures portrayed in the show: women like Ida B. Wells, Inez Milholland and Alice Paul, who not only spearheaded the suffrage fight but also wrote the Equal Rights Amendment ( still not law, but that’s a whole other story).

“I was like, that’s my goal, exactly that!” Taub, who plays Paul, said from her dressing room later. “Do everything I can to make you fall in love with these women, root for them, care about them. So that was a really satisfying moment to witness.”

Satisfying but sobering, too. Fact is, few audience members know much about the American suffrage movement. So the all-female creative team behind “Suffs,” which had a high-profile off-Broadway run and opens Thursday on Broadway with extensive revisions, knows they’re starting from zero.

It’s an opportunity, says Taub, who studied social movements — but not suffrage — at New York University. But it’s also a huge challenge: How do you educate but also entertain?

This cover image released by Alfred A. Knopf shows “Citizen: My Life After the White House” by former President Bill Clinton. (Alfred A. Knopf via AP)

One member of the “Suffs” team has an especially poignant connection to the material. That would be producer Hillary Clinton.

She was, of course, the first woman to win the U.S. presidential nomination of a major party, and the first to win the popular vote. But Clinton says she never studied the suffrage movement in school, even at Wellesley. Only later in life did she fill in the gap, including a visit as first lady to Seneca Falls, home to the first American women’s rights convention some 70 years before the 19th Amendment gave women the vote.

“I became very interested in women’s history through my own work, and writing and reading,” Clinton told The Associated Press. And so, seeing “Suffs” off-Broadway, “I was thrilled because it just helps to fill a big gap in our awareness of the long, many-decades struggle for suffrage.”

It was Taub who wrote Clinton, asking her to come on board. “I thought about it for a nanosecond,” Clinton says, “and decided absolutely, I wanted to help lift up this production.” A known theater lover, Clinton describes traveling often to New York as a college student and angling for discounts, often seeing only the second act, when she could get in for free. “For years, I’d only seen the second act of ‘Hair,’” she quips.

Clinton then reached out to Malala Yousafzai, whom Taub also hoped to engage as a producer. As secretary of state, Clinton had gotten to know the Pakistani education activist who was shot by a Taliban gunman at age 15. Clinton wanted Yousafzai to know she was involved and hoped the Nobel Peace Prize winner would be, too.

“I’m thrilled,” Clinton says of Yousafzai’s involvement, “because yes, this is an American story, but the pushback against women’s rights going on at this moment in history is global.”

Yousafzai had also seen the show, directed by Leigh Silverman, and loved it. She, too, has been a longtime fan of musicals, though she notes her own acting career began and ended with a school skit in Pakistan, playing a not-very-nice male boss. Her own education about suffrage was limited to “one or two pages in a history book that talked about the suffrage movement in the U.K.,” where she’d moved for medical treatment.

“I still had no idea about the U.S. side of the story,” Yousafzai told the AP. It was a struggle among conflicting personalities, and a clash over priorities between older and younger activists but also between white suffragists and those of color — something the show addresses with the searing “Wait My Turn,” sung by Nikki M. James as Wells, the Black activist and journalist.

“This musical has really helped me see activism from a different lens,” says Yousafzai. “I was able to take a deep breath and realize that yes, we’re all humans and it requires resilience and determination, conversation, open-mindedness … and along the way you need to show you’re listening to the right perspectives and including everyone in your activism.”

When asked for feedback by the “Suffs” team, Yousafzai says she replied that she loved the show just as it was. (She recently paid a visit to the cast, and toured backstage.) Clinton, who has attended rehearsals, quips: “I sent notes, because I was told that’s what producers do.”

Clinton adds: “I love the changes. It takes a lot of work to get the storytelling right — to decide what should be sung versus spoken, how to make sure it’s not just telling a piece of history, but is entertaining.”

Indeed, the off-Broadway version was criticized by some as feeling too much like a history lesson. The new version feels faster and lighter, with a greater emphasis on humor — even in a show that details hunger strikes and forced feedings.

One moment where the humor shines through: a new song titled “Great American Bitch” that begins with a suffragist noting a man had called her, well, a bitch. The song reclaims the word with joy and laughter. Taub says this moment — and another where an effigy of President Woodrow Wilson (played by Grace McLean, in a cast that’s all female or nonbinary) is burned — has been a hit with audiences.

“As much as the show has changed,” she says, “the spine of it is the same. A lot of what I got rid of was just like clearing brush.”

Most of the original cast has returned. Jenn Colella plays Carrie Chapman Catt, an old-guard suffragist who clashed with the younger Paul over tactics and timing. James returns as Wells, while Milholland, played by Phillipa Soo off-Broadway, is now played by Hannah Cruz.

Given its parallels to a certain Lin-Manuel Miranda blockbuster about the Founding Fathers, it’s perhaps not a surprise that the show has been dubbed “Hermilton” by some.

“I have to say,” Clinton says of Taub, “I think she’s doing for this part of American history what Lin did for our founders — making it alive, approachable, understandable. I’m hoping ‘Suffs’ has the same impact ‘Hamilton’ had.”

That may seem a tall order, but producers have been buoyed by audience reaction. “They’re laughing even more than we thought they would at the parts we think are funny, and cheering at other parts,” Clinton says. A particular cheer comes at the end, when Paul proposes the ERA. “A cast member said, ‘Who’d have ever thought the Equal Rights Amendment would get cheers in a Broadway theater?’” Clinton recalls.

One clear advantage the show surely has: timeliness. During the off-Broadway run, news emerged the Supreme Court was preparing to overturn Roe vs. Wade, fueling a palpable sense of urgency in the audience. The Broadway run begins as abortion rights are again in the news — and a key issue in the presidential election only months away.

Taub takes the long view. She’s been working on the show for a decade, and says something’s always happening to make it timely.

“I think,” she muses, “it just shows the time is always right to learn about women’s history.”
