New Alachua County Student School Enrollment

Enrolling in school  .

Click the link above for more information about enrollment and the link to the online enrollment application.

The Office of Student Assignment assigns school to property parcels based on geographic location within the county.  Each parcel is assigned to an elementary, middle and high school.  These are referred to as zoned schools.  Students residing on a given property must attend the school to which the property is assigned.

Parents may apply to have their students attend schools other than their zoned schools.  This is managed through the school choice/controlled open enrollment process, offered each spring for the following school year. Any school choice applications received after the deadline are placed at the bottom of the waiting list and processed only as time permits.

Parents who miss the school choice window or experience unforeseen circumstances may apply for a zoning exception based on specific hardship criteria.  Requests not based on hardship reasons are to be treated as a request for school choice/controlled open enrollment.  Zoning exceptions are granted for a single school year and must be renewed annually.  Exceptions can be revoked at any time for student disciplinary problems, excessive absences or tardiness.

New residents or families with questions about what school your child is zoned to attend - please contact the District's Office of Student Assignment/Zoning Office at [email protected] or (352) 955-7700 to verify school attendance zone information.

If approved for school attendance in the District, the student will be assigned to the requested school, provided the school has available space and it is in the best interest of the educational program at the school.  Parents are responsible for safely transporting their child to and from the assigned school in a timely manner. Students granted a Special Attendance Permit may remain at the assigned school through the highest grade. There is no longer a requirement to re-apply annually.

Please note:

*  A student on suspension or who has been expelled cannot be approved for transfer to the District.

*  No student residing in the district may be displaced by a student from another district.

 Additionally, the following preferential treatment will be provided through the Special Assignment Request and Special Attendance Permit processes;

  • dependent children of active-duty military personnel whose movement resulted from military orders;
  • students who have been relocated due to a foster care placement into another school zone;
  • students who move to another school zone due to a court-ordered change in custody due to separation or divorce, or the serious illness or death of a custodial parent.

  • A parent’s sworn affidavit accompanied by a certificate of examination

School records -- Items such as withdrawal forms, standardized test scores and recent report cards will help the school place your child appropriately. If you don’t have these items, you can provide the school with the name of your child’s previous school so the records can be requested.

If your child has had any educational psychological testing, an IEP or 504, or a gifted education plan, please provide the documentation to the school when enrolling so the staff can make appropriate plans for your child’s coursework and special services.

Social Security Card – In keeping with Florida law, we request that you bring your child’s Social Security Card to the school. However, the card is NOT required for enrollment. Information about the state requirements on Social Security Cards is available here .

My child is already enrolled in the district, but we’ve moved to a new school zone. Do I need to do anything?

The process for current ACPS students who’ve moved within the county is much simpler than it is for new students/families. You just need to bring two proofs of your new residence and a copy of your photo ID to your new school to re-register your child.

How do I find out which school my child will attend?

When you submit your address in the New Student Online Enrollment application, the system will let you know what school your child is zoned to attend. You can also contact the Office of Student Assignment/Zoning at [email protected] or (352) 955-7700, provide your address and your child’s grade, and the staff will let you know the name and address of the zoned school.

When can I enroll my child?

You can enroll your child at any time when the school office is open. You are encouraged to contact your child’s school to request their office hours. A list of schools and their phone numbers is available here .

We strongly encourage families to enroll their children during the summer, well before the start of school (school calendars are available here ) so that the schools can plan for the appropriate number of staff and any special services your child may need. Registering during the summer also limits your wait time and guarantees that your child and family will have a smooth start to the school year.

Schools are open Mondays through Thursdays most weeks during the summer. The only exceptions are federal/state holidays (Juneteenth and July 4 th ).

What if I want my child to attend a school other than their zoned school?

You can request what’s called a zoning exception. Information and an application are available at www.sbac.edu/zoning . Zoning exceptions are granted based on specific criteria, typically some sort of hardship. They must be renewed annually and can be revoked at any time due to student disciplinary issues or excessive absences/tardies. Transportation to school is not provided for students on zoning exceptions.

Each spring during a specific time window, the district accepts applications for school choice/controlled open enrollment, meaning a family can request a different school for the next school year. If accepted, a student may remain at the new school until completing the final grade offered at that school. Transportation is not provided.

Who can I call for help or more information?

First contact your child’s zoned school for help or additional information about enrollment. A list of schools/centers and their addresses and phone numbers are available here .

If for some reason your child’s school can’t help you, you can contact the Office of Student Assignment at [email protected] or (352) 955-7700.

Boundary and Student Assignment Study 2023

Final report.

The Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education (DME) conducted a comprehensive review of District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) boundaries and feeder patterns and public school student assignment policies in 2023 in accordance with the Attendance Zone Boundaries Act of 2013. This review focused on solving current and anticipated future challenges relating to clear rights, adequate capacity, and equitable access to public schools for the next 10 years.

The 2023 Boundary and Student Assignment Study presents final recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Student Assignment and Boundaries ("Advisory Committee"), chaired by the Deputy Mayor for Education and whose membership included a diverse group of education stakeholders from across all eight wards. The Advisory Committee met from March 2023 through March 2024 to identify the study’s guiding principles, discuss challenges, propose solutions, and develop system-level and school-specific recommendations informed by data and community feedback.

Within the robust system of school choice and an evolving education landscape, these recommendations seek to both strengthen the District’s public school system consisting of by right DCPS schools complemented by citywide DCPS and public charter schools for the future. See below for the Advisory Committee’s final recommendations to the Mayor.

Read the report with final recommendations.

Learn how the DCPS school boundary recommendations could impact your school assignments by reviewing your address in the Interactive Boundary Explorer .

Explore supporting data and information shared with the Advisory Committee and the public throughout the duration of the study .

Information about DCPS’s and other agencies' implementation plans for the accepted recommendations, which include the major milestones, timelines, and phase-in policies, will be linked here in the coming months. Changes from adopted recommendations would take effect no sooner than SY2025-26, starting in August of 2025. New policies will be clear in advance of the common lottery process that begins in December 2024.

You can give students grades and feedback, set up grading categories and alternate grading schemes, and see how your students' grades are changing over time. You can also ask for revisions on students' work when you give them feedback.

Find out more about how to grade, return, reassign, and excuse students from assignments below!

How to grade an assignment in Microsoft Teams

1. Open a class team .

2. Navigate to Assignments .

3. Choose an assignment that students have turned in.

4. Select a student's status in the Status column to open their work.

turned in

5. Review work and add comments on the document itself, where relevant. If the student submitted more than one file, you may select other files on the right to view.

Note:  Can't see a file in Teams? You might have to open files created in other apps on their own. Older Microsoft Office files with .doc, .xls, and .ppt file extensions need to be edited in the desktop versions of those apps.

6.  Add feedback by typing in the Feedback textbox. Attach a file by selecting Attach file or + New .

7. If you designated points for this assignment, add points in the box below the Feedback textbox.

8. If you are ready to return work to the student, select Return , or choose  Return > Return for revision .

9. Use the arrows on either side of the student's name on the right to navigate from student to student.

Note:  To work with less distraction, you can choose Hide pane in the bottom right corner of the grading pane. This will hide the pane, but you can still use arrows to move to other students' work and return the work by selecting Return .

Handshake activation.

Handshake is the University’s comprehensive job board for part-time jobs, internships, and full-time positions. Require students to activate their Handshake profile. Require students to find three jobs of interest and analyze what parts of the position or organization appeal to them. Students tell us they want to connect their majors to careers, and this is a concrete way for them to see the types of positions available to them upon graduation.

Career Fairs and Networking Events

Encourage students to attend career events. The OCPD and Handshake host career fairs, networking events, career panels, information sessions, and other workshops designed to help students explore career interests, meet alumni and employers, and gain access to opportunities. We encourage you to ask students to reflect on the experience by sharing what they learned at the event. The OCPD can provide a list of attendees so that you may verify students’ participation in the event.

FOCUS Assessment

The FOCUS 2 is an online resource that students can access for free to learn about their interests, skills, values, and personality through self-assessments, and to see how those aspects of self might correlate to various professions. The assessment also provides majors currently offered at Georgia Southern that translate to working in those career fields. Students receive their results automatically but may also schedule an appointment with an OCPD or Major and Career Exploration Center staff member to learn more about their results.

FOCUS Career Readiness Assessment

Students may take the “Am I Career Ready” self-assessment within FOCUS to learn more about the NACE career competencies.  Through the assessment, they may rate their development of each competency and then receive suggestions on how to further improve their skills.  Faculty may opt to add a discussion post or reflection paper assignment for students to summarize what they learned from the assessment and steps that they plan to take to further develop their career competencies.

Meet with an OCPD Staff Member

Students can schedule appointments with Career and Internship Advisors to discuss majors and career exploration, résumé assistance, cover letter and other professional correspondence support, job, internship and co-op search, practice interviews, and graduate school exploration. Appointments are available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. with advanced notice and are scheduled via Handshake. With a class roster, the OCPD can verify student appointments that are completed.

Mock Interview – In-Person or Virtual Appointment

Students will meet with the appropriate staff member and must bring a résumé to the meeting. Attire may or may not be requested to be professional in nature. Students will be interviewed and will receive feedback from an OCPD staff member.

Mock Interview – Video

Faculty will work with office staff to create a video-based interview using the current AI-based system (Big Interview). Faculty will choose questions, set expectations for students’ attire, and will manage the dissemination of the information to students. Depending on how the assignment is set up, students may receive feedback instantly via artificial intelligence or at a later date from an OCPD staff member.

Résumé Review – In-Person or Virtual Appointment

Students must bring a résumé to the meeting with the staff member who has committed to the appointment. A review will take place during the appointment, with suggestions for improvement or changes, if appropriate.

Résumé Review – Submission through Handshake

Students will upload their document(s) through their Handshake account. A critique will take place by assigned staff and a response may include Changes Suggested (not approved for use) or a Complete Review (approved) comment. Students will receive an email from the staff regarding the status of their document(s). Documents marked Changes Suggested will be returned through the students’ Georgia Southern email with comments embedded for the student to address.
