I was appointed as a Clinical Lecturer in paediatric oncology at UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health (GOS-ICH) in 1998 after completing my PhD in cancer biology, undertaken as a clinical research fellow at the Institute of Cancer Research (1995-1998). My initial 4 year appointment (1998-2002) at GOS-ICH was funded by a donation to ICH from the Great Ormond Street Hospital Special Trustees. In 2001 I was awarded a Cancer Research UK (then the Cancer Research Campaign) Clinician Scientist Fellowship (2002-2007). Since 2007, I have received HEFCE and Great Ormond Street Biomedical Research Centre core funding. In 2005 I gained Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in Paediatrics and Paediatric Oncology and was appointed as Honorary Consultant Oncologist at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Research within the Cancer Institute is varied and entails various disciplines such as molecular and cellular biology, cancer genetics, immunology, genetic engineering, cancer therapeutics and bioinformatics. There are five research departments within the Cancer Institute: Cancer Biology; Haematology; Oncology; Pathology; Clinical Trials Centre;

Graduates go on to further medical training or clinical posts, or academic posts at institutions including universities around the world. They have also found employment in laboratory management, research, industry, clinical trials co-ordination, scientific writing and editing, sales and consulting.

New funding awarded to the Cancer Research UK City of London Centre – a partnership between UCL, Queen Mary University London, King’s College London and the Francis Crick Institute – will enable more doctors to conduct cancer research alongside their clinical practice.

UCL shares in £10.5 million award to train cancer clinician scientists

The City of London Centre provides a globally unique training environment for clinicians looking to conduct research. Along with healthcare partners and PhD students, the Centre offers opportunities to undertake world class collaborative projects.

Clinician scientists play an essential role in bridging the gap between scientific discovery research and clinical research involving patients, and make vital contributions to new knowledge and its translation to clinical practice.

The new funding award will allow the Centre to continue training the next generation of clinician scientists, enhance the diversity of their research teams and help to accelerate development of novel biological therapies.

Professor Tariq Enver, Director of the CRUK City of London Centre from UCL Cancer Institute, said: “Cancer Research UK’s continued commitment to our clinical training programme enables us to equip the next generation of clinical academics with the multidisciplinary skills they will need to develop the cancer treatments of the future.”

Cancer Research UK’s Clinical Academic Training Programme (CATP) Award was established in 2019 with a five-year, £50.7 million investment spread across its research centres, including the City of London Centre. The new round of awards will continue to transform clinical research training at nine of CRUK’s research centres over the next five years.

Michelle Mitchell, Cancer Research UK’s Chief Executive, said: “Clinician scientists have a very important role to play by bringing their knowledge and experience of treating people with cancer to scientific research.

“We need all our doctors and scientists to be able to reach their full potential, no matter their background. That’s why we are continuing to provide flexible training options for early-career clinician scientists. After the success of the first five years of this programme, we want to encourage even more clinicians to get involved in cancer research to help us get closer to a world where everybody lives longer, better lives free from the fear of cancer.”

Becoming a clinician scientist usually involves doctors taking time out during their medical degree or training to undertake a PhD, before returning to train in their chosen specialisation. However, many clinicians don’t come back to research after qualifying as consultants, for various reasons.

Nearly three quarters of clinical research staff surveyed by Cancer Research UK in 2023 said that it has become harder to deliver research in a timely manner in the last 18 months, with 78% of respondents describing wider pressures on the health service as a substantial or extreme barrier. In addition, data from the Medical Schools Council Clinical Academic Survey reports a decline in the number of clinical academic positions between 2011–2020.

To address these issues and support clinician scientist training, the Cancer Research UK CATP award scheme provides funding for flexible training options, alongside mentorship and networking, to better support clinicians who want to get involved and stay in cancer research. The funding will allow the centre to offer PhD opportunities as part of a medical degree and to early career clinicians carrying out their medical training prior to specialisation.

The new City of London Centre Clinical Academic Training Programme bid was led by Professors Gerhardt Attard and Tariq Enver from UCL Cancer Institute, supported by a team of new clinical academic leads from all four partner institutions: Professor Veronica Kinsler (Francis Crick Institute), Professor Jessica Okosun (Queen Mary University London), Dr Debashis Sarker (King’s College London,) Professor Shibani Nicum (UCL), and Dr Sally Leevers, Training Lead (Francis Crick Institute).

Cancer Biology PhD Program

Cancer Biology PhD Program

Established in 1978, the interdisciplinary Cancer Biology PhD Program is designed to provide graduate and medical students with the education and training they need to make significant contributions to the field of cancer biology. The program is led by Laura Attardi, PhD, and Julien Sage, PhD, and currently has over 60 participating faculty members representing a variety of specialties.

Coursework during the first year equips students with a broad understanding of the molecular, genetic, cellular biological and pathobiological aspects of cancer. By the beginning of the second year, students have chosen a research advisor and begun work on their dissertation projects. An annual program conference provides students with an opportunity to present their research findings, receive feedback and forge collaborations with faculty and fellow students. 

The Cancer Biology program also sponsors a postdoctoral scholar track in which accepted MD and PhD scholars pursue research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

What you'll study

This MSc gives you a detailed and thorough understanding of the molecular and cellular basis of cancer and its treatments. You’ll also develop a deep knowledge of cancer biology, pathology, pharmacology and drug development.

You’ll study research methods and techniques, enabling you to make the most of the three-month laboratory project that forms a central component of the programme.

During your laboratory project, you’ll be fully integrated into one of the Institute’s six research centres , gaining valuable scientific and transferable skills. You’ll also gain experience of the research process – including preparation of a thesis – so you’ll have a solid foundation for a future career in scientific research.

Compulsory/Core modules

Cancer biology.

This module covers cell and molecular biology relevant to cancer, including: - The processes of carcinogenesis and DNA damage - The key cellular and molecular processes affected in tumour development - Key proteins and pathways regulating cell proliferation and cell death - A broader concept of malignancy and its nvironment - Processes involved in invasion and metastasis.

Cancer Pharmacology

This module will provide teaching in pharmacology relevant to the treatment of malignant disease, including: The basic concepts of cancer chemotherapy; Practical and theoretical aspects of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics; The basic clinical and molecular pharmacology of the major classes of anti-cancer agents; Novel cancer therapies using small molecules.

Drug Development

On completion of this module you will have detailed knowledge on the principles and practice of drug development at all stages of the development process, including: Ethical and good practice issues; What a therapeutic target is; How novel therapeutic targets are identified; How therapeutic targets are validated; Early clinical trials methodology.

Biological Therapies

This module will provide an understanding of the science behind the biological therapies of cancer, and an up-to-date review of the current status of preclinical and clinical trials. The module will also provide an insight into the ways that laboratory research is translated into clinical trials. By the end of the module you will be able to: Understand the basis of biological therapy of cancer; Understand the role of non-malignant cells and mediators in cancer growth and progression

Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics

To provide an understanding of the principles band practice of molecular diagnosis in the detection and management of disease - To provide an understanding of quality assurance issues in the diagnostic setting - To give examples of the use of current molecular techniques in the management of disease - To provide practical experience of molecular techniques.

Dissertation

This module provides an opportunity to further develop and apply skills learned during the taught modules by undertaking an independent, critical study and evaluation of an approved and relevant topic, typically within an active research group either within the Institute or at a partner organisation. The specific nature of each dissertation will be determined through discussions between the student, the course director and the project supervisor but will involve applying analytical, investigative and communication skills and utilizing a range of research methods and tools.

Research Methods

The module covers the techniques and knowledge needed to critically appraise published research, and carry out a piece of original research. Topics include: - How to review and interpret published research - How to structure and write a research paper or lab write up - Learn and use a range of statistical methodology - The ethical and legislative framework in which research is undertaken - Training in data preparation and presentation

Research Lab Skills

The module gives the students hands-on experience of key lab techniques and the principles of how to interpret the findings. Techniques include: Skills in measuring accurately using pipetttes, weighing scales Mathematical laboratory skills Immunochemistry Tissue Culture RNA1 extraction and analysis RT-PCR DNA purification, analysis and cloning Flow cytometry

Lab Project

The project is a core component of the Masters courses. It is a substantial piece of full-time independent work which occupies the final three months of the course, running approximately from end of April/beginning of May to end of July. A 5,000 word project describing the work must be submitted by a deadline at the end of July, and an oral presentation (12 minutes + 8 minutes questions) is assessed by at least two members of BCI faculty. Students can start some preparation work earlier; May is the latest it can start. The project is undertaken by the student; it is not done by the supervisor on the student¿s behalf. Projects are demanding and involve spending all your hours on the subject, however students learn a huge amount in the process and it really gives them a very good idea about the process of research. Very successful students have in the past stayed on to do higher degrees (PhD) and more. Supervisors and students are also given guidance as to the expectation of their role.

Genomic Approaches to Cancer

This module will provide detailed teaching on the principles and interpretation of large scale genomic and proteomic approaches to cancer, including: - The application of genomic technology - The working principles of expression array and genotype array technology - The principles of bio-statistical analysis of genomic data - The advantages and limitations of the various genomic approaches described - The use of proteomic approaches in studying cancers.

Elective modules

Paediatric and adolescent oncology.

The module will provide an intense and comprehensive overview of Paediatric and Adolescent Oncology, from disease aetiology to novel treatments, and aims to equip the student with a fundamental understanding of the subject area. Topics covered include: - The aetiology of paediatric leukaemia and selected paediatric solid tumours - The molecular aspects of selected paediatric cancers, and how understanding the genetic basis of such cancers has improved molecular diagnostic techniques - The principles of paediatric cancer therapy, from past to present, including novel targeted therapies - The treatment of cancer in adolescent patients.

Pathology of Cancer and Imaging

This module will introduce the student to the terminology of pathology and histology, and describe the pathological processes of tumour development. It will also introduce students to the vital role that imaging plays in all aspects of the management of patients with cancer, including different imaging technologies, their application, and risks to the patient. Teaching will be delivered as lectures, microscopy sessions and powerpoint presentation of images.

Assessment will be based on written assignments and posters and oral presentations. Examinations will be in the form of online assessments which may consist of timed essay questions, short answer questions or case studies

There will also be a full laboratory project write-up.

Research project

You will also be assessed on a supervised laboratory project. Recent projects include:

  • The role of RAS signalling in the contracility of cancer associated fibroblasts
  • Investigating molecular mechanisms of docetaxel resistance in prostate cancer
  • Identification of DNA methylation signature for the early diagnosis of breast cancer (BC) in women with a significant familial history of BC

The laboratory project involves 10.5 weeks of full-time work in one of the Institute’s research centres. You will also complete a 5,000-word write-up. 

If you’re a part-time student, there may be some flexibility to arrange part-time projects.

I really enjoyed studying at the BCI. The MSc programme offers you taught modules in a broad range of cancer research related subjects, as well as hands-on research experience through your lab project. Both form a good basis for your scientific career, for example if you want to do a PhD. On top of that the people were very nice and supportive. You’ll be taught through a variety of teaching methods including: seminars, laboratory practice sessions, self-directed learning, one-to-one tutorials, case presentations, and reading lists of books and journal papers. You’ll be assigned an Academic Mentor, who will guide you in both academic and pastoral matters throughout your time at Queen Mary. The School of Cancer and Pharmaceutical Sciences comprises of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre (CCC), Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (IPS) and recently incorporated Analytical, Environmental & Forensic Sciences Department.

Within the Comprehensive Cancer Centre there are thirteen research programmes and 20 research groups.

We collaborate extensively with scientists and clinicians across KCL and within King’s Health Partners (KHP ).

The overarching objective of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre is to combine research excellence with innovations in clinical practice to improve cancer patient care and therefore our research goes from basic biological research through to translational cancer research to clinical trials. We have a particular focus on tumour microenvironment, imaging and immunotherapy, which are the themes of our Cancer Research UK King's Health Partners' Cancer Centre'.

Each of the three themes within IPS includes clusters of research activity, some of which have evolved during the past decade ( e.g., drug delivery, chemical biology, pharmaceutical biophysics, pharmacology), and some of which have joined KCL more recently such as enhanced activity in anticancer and anti-infective drug discovery, nanomedicines, substance abuse, health psychology, and clinical pharmacy. Researchers within and across the three themes interact both informally and via joint initiatives to promote cross-disciplinary research.

  • Cancer Biology Research Project

You’ll take all of these core modules.

The Molecular Basis of Cancer

Learn the cellular and molecular basis of cancer processes and hallmarks, together with clinical and pathological aspects of carcinogenesis and treatment.

Develop advanced skills in biological experimental design, the critical analysis of scientific literature, and biological data interpretation.

Conduct an innovative 10-month research project, with wet-lab/dry lab projects undertaken primarily at Imperial College London.

Some opportunities will be available for projects that collaborate with industry and at other organisations such as the Bart’s Cancer Institute, the Francis Crick Institute, GlaxoSmithKline, the Institute of Cancer Research, and the Medical Research Council.

You'll be expected to produce a persuasive and logical experimental study proposal based upon contemporary research.

You can submit one application form per year of entry. You can choose up to two courses.

Application deadlines – The current round closes on Friday 31 May 2024

Application rounds

We consider applications to this course in four batches. Applications received before each deadline are considered in those batches, and applicants are then required to attend an online interview.

If you wish for your application to be considered in a particular batch, please apply at least five working days before the deadline to ensure your application is included in that round of decision making.

The application deadlines are:

  • 26 November 2023: online interviews 15-18 December 2023
  • 31 January 2024: online interviews 19-23 February 2024
  • 24 March 2024: online interviews 15-19 April 2024
  • 31 May 2024: online interviews 17-21 June 2024

Competition for places on this programme are high with 70% of all offers being made following the January submission deadline. Whilst we do continue to make offers March to June, less than 5% of our remaining offers are made following the May submission deadline.

Application fee

There is no application fee for MRes courses, Postgraduate Certificates, Postgraduate Diplomas, or courses such as PhDs and EngDs.

If you are applying for a taught Master’s course, you will need to pay an application fee before submitting your application.

The fee applies per application and not per course.

  • £80 for all taught Master's applications, excluding those to the Imperial College Business School.
  • £100 for all MSc applications to the Imperial College Business School.
  • £150 for all MBA applications to the Imperial College Business School.

Tuition fees

Overseas fee, inflationary increases.

You should expect and budget for your fees to increase each year.

Your fee is based on the year you enter the College, not your year of study. This means that if you repeat a year or resume your studies after an interruption, your fees will only increase by the amount linked to inflation.

Postgraduate Master's Loan

If you're a UK national, or EU national with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, you may be able to apply for a  Postgraduate Master’s Loan  from the UK government, if you meet certain criteria.

The government has not yet published the loan amount for students starting courses in Autumn 2024. As a guide, the maximum value of the loan was £12,167 for courses starting on or after 1 August 2023. 

The loan is not means-tested and you can choose whether to put it towards your tuition fees or living costs.

The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics is a vibrant hub of scientific inquiry and education. Our research spans a wide spectrum, encompassing fundamental, applied, and pathogenic microbiology.
