“Brian’s work is extremely skilled and rigorous, he is always on time and he has the capacity to comprehend my ideas and reword them in the right manner without any major changes to the meaning. His corrections are accurate and his eye sharp enough to spot mistakes that the writer, after several editions, cannot simply spot anymore.”

“As a student of English Literature, issues with my grammar and essay structure were really preventing me from achieving the grade I desired. Brian’s help has meant that my essays have been pushed the extra inch from a 2:1 to a 1:1. He was always available when I had any queries, and very accommodating when I was working towards deadlines. “

“I needed Scribo in my final year of undergraduate studies because my essay-writing ability wasn’t on par with my course knowledge. Brian helped me to bridge the gap between them and effectively portray my hard work onto paper to achieve the 2.1 I deserved.”

Dissertations or Theses

planning

A dissertation or thesis is a research project that asks a question(s) and sets out to answer that question(s) through research and inquiry. It is completed in an structured, critical and academically rigorous fashion ( GradCoach , 2021).

This eight step guide is designed to help you get started when undertaking an undergraduate or masters dissertation or thesis. It also includes a wealth of links to other resources where further help can be found.

Eight Step Dissertation or Thesis Guide

  1. make a plan.

planning

Breaking down a large task, such as a dissertation, will make your project seem more manageable and allow you to better take control of your time. Make a list of all the task you have to do from beginning to submission. Working backwards can sometimes help with this. Then, order these by date for when they should be completed. Print out the planning template in the 'Further Reading' section below to make a start.

Print out your dissertation action plan and put it somewhere prominent so you can actively check your progress and make any changes necessary. Regularly spend time tracking your process and thinking ahead. In your action plan, you do not need to do each section of the dissertation in sequence. Different parts such as methodology, results, literature review can be worked on and drafted at the same time to get a head start on the writing process. These can then be revised and completed for their deadline.

Begin to set up a filling system for research you have found, your notes, sections of your thesis, course materials. This filing system should be for both print and online materials. Review this throughout your project. Make back-ups of your thesis/dissertation and all necessary files as you go and save to the cloud or somewhere else safe. Accidents can happen, so this can avoid unnecessary pain.

  2. Pick a Topic

planning

Read, read, and read more. Choosing a topic will require dedicated reading time. As you read, create a list of possible topics that you can narrow down.  Your research will need to advance the research knowledge in some way. This maybe small, such as applying a new theory or looking at a slightly different population.

Chose an area that will interest you for the duration of the dissertation or even beyond. Review lectures and previous assignments from every year of your course. Review current journals from the Library in your area. Go to UCD Connect  and select eJournals. Try to identify a gap in the literature. This will require dedicated reading time to become familiar with the area.

Look at the research interests of your possible supervisors. Go to UCD Research to do this. Review any previous dissertations available from your school. Note the Library does not hold undergraduate or masters dissertations. Include choosing a topic in the first draft of your project plan, otherwise you may spend too long on this part.

Questions to ask of potential topics

  • Life experience – do you have any personal connection or life experience with the topic, to make it interesting and easy to relate to?
  • Can this topic be researched in the allowed timeframe?
  • Is there adequate research literature to draw on? Spend some time on OneSearch and Library Databases for your subject area.
  • Will the supervisor for that topic be someone you can work with?
  • Do you have the adequate skills and resources to carry out research in this area?
  • Scope of topic - is the topic too broad? Make sure it is focused clearly so that you can frame a specific research question or thesis statement. Alternatively, if it is too narrow, there may not be enough literature for you to draw from. Think Goldilocks and her perfect bowl of porridge.
  • Ethics approval – will this topic require ethics approval? This can take time and may make the dissertation unmanageable in the time frame. Discuss this with your supervisor before any choice on such a topic.

Research Question, Thesis Statement, Hypothesis

Depending on the guidelines provided by your school you will need to go on to develop a research question, a thesis statement and perhaps a hypothesis.

A research question (s) needs to clearly capture what gap in the research you want to answer. It needs to be broad enough to sustain your dissertation and specific enough that you can answer it clearly and within the timeframe. Once decided, you may find our "Approaching your Research Question" of use.

A thesis statement serves as the main argument that drives your paper forward. It shows the emphasis of your argument and indicates its methodology. It focuses your ideas into one or two sentences. It should present the topic of your paper and also make a comment about your position in relation to the topic. Your thesis statement should tell your reader what the paper is about and also help guide your writing and keep your argument focused ( UCD Writing Centre , 2021).

The hypothesis is formulated before you start. It states what you expect to happen. Your research then tests this hypothesis to see if there is evidence to support it or not ( Cottrell , 2019, p.355).

  3. Structure

planning

Each discipline and perhaps topic will have a particular structure. Ensure you check your dissertation or thesis guidelines for this. If not present, discuss with your supervisor. It is very important to get advice on this before you start. Some headings that appear in many disciplines would be the following

  • Literature Review
  • Themed Chapters
  • Methodology
  • References and Bibliography

For detailed examples of dissertation structures in different disciplines go to the University of Leeds ' Final Chapter '.

  4. Literature Review

planning

A literature review is an overview of the research relating to your research topic. It allows you to demonstrate what has been written on the topic and where your research fits in to that area. You can use it to acquaint yourself fully with the research area, theories, methodologies, key researchers, and anything else of note. It will provide a framework for your research and the evidence needed to support your research question and methodology.

  • Use UCD Library’s OneSearch and Databases from UCD Connect  to search the literature. Consult the Library’s Subject Guides  for Databases in your subject area.
  • Make an appointment for help searching the literature with your liaison librarian .
  • Use the Library’s video tutorials on how best to search library resources.
  • Collect your references as you search (see below). This is essential.
  • Begin by searching and reading abstracts to identify a set of articles of interest. Gather a number of these, then identify which ones you want to read in detail.
  • Follow up on any citations or references in those articles to track the beginnings of the research idea.
  • Read literature review articles in your subject area to see the writing style and to find out who the main researchers are on your topic.
  • Read actively and critically . Take organized and attractive notes you can easily consult.
  • Use your notes for the basis of your literature review. As you take notes, practice capturing the content of the researcher’s work or themes of interest in two or three lines, that could be included in your literature review. Make sure that you are not simply describing or summarising the literature; you should analyse, compare, synthesise, and critically evaluate what you read. Avoid just highlighting text in articles or books, as this is not memorable after the first reading. Date every set of notes you make, and file for easy retrieval.
  • Visit UCD Writing Centre for help. They can work with you to get the best out of your writing.

UCD Writing Centre has an excellent video on writing a Literature Review. UCD Library also has a guide dedicated to Literature Review .

  5. Referencing and Citation

planning

Begin your Reference List or Bibliography as soon as you begin your research.

If you do this using EndNote or another reference management software, this is easy and can be done as you search. See our EndNote guide for details.

If you are manually creating your references, create a References Master List as you begin searching. Copy full reference details of each source, formatted in the required reference style. Use the Academic Integrity Guide for different style formats such as Harvard, APA, MLA etc.

In your notes, ensure you cite each source you are referring to with an author and page number. This will save an enormous amount of time and agony at the end of your dissertation. See our guide on Note Taking .

  6. Writing Up

planning

  • Have a clear naming system for versions of your thesis so that you do not over-write any work. For example ‘Methodology Draft 1’ or ‘Methodology 210201’.
  • Start multiple sections at the same time. This will allow flexibility in your work in case of writers block, and better distribute your writing time across sections.
  • Try to avoid perfectionism. Do not spend a long time perfecting one element, such as the literature review, at the expense of other elements such as your results, discussion or conclusion.
  • Getting parts of sections down on paper in some form is good writing practice. You can start with headings and fill in notes underneath. It is better to have written multiple drafts of your thesis to give you time to formulate your ideas and stand back from your writing while not against a deadline.
  • Date every piece of writing you draft, whether notes or thesis content. Never delete something you have written, just file it for possible re-use.
  • If you are carrying out quantitative or qualitative research, write up the results as you get them. Write up the methodology also, while it is fresh in your mind. This can be redrafted and polished off at a later stage. Remember to include all necessary references and citations.
  • Write the introduction last. This ensures you have covered everything in the body of your dissertation that has been set out in the introduction.
  • Leave enough time for the conclusion so that you are not under time pressure, and cannot give your dissertation the finish it deserves. You can even start drafting this before you have all your results, just to get a format created that can be worked on.
  • Keep reading. Do not stop reading once your literature review is completed. Continue to look for new articles on your subject area, that you might need to acknowledge in your dissertation.
  • Talk to other students, friends and family members about your thesis. Explain the ideas and methodology. This will help you clarify the content and address weaknesses.

UCD Writing Centre offers one-to-one sessions, workshops, and resources to help with writing. Use this excellent service as much as you can.

  7. Editing and Proofing

planning

Ensure you have included editing and proofing in your dissertation action plan. Taking a break of a day or two from your piece can be helpful to allow you see it with fresh eyes.

Ask fellow students, friends and family to review your work for spelling, grammar or other mistakes. Return the favour if possible. Asking anyone else to write your work is not acceptable and would be plagiarism. See our advice on avoiding plagiarism .

Do not just work on screen. If you can, print out draft versions rather than working onscreen completely. This can really help with editing.

Read your work out loud. This has been proven as one of the best methods in editing - for spotting lack of punctuation, overly long sentences, grammatical mistakes, repetitive words, and much more.

  8. Submission

planning

Before submission, return to the requirements for the dissertation provided by your programme or school. Check off every aspect of the requirements to ensure you have included all elements requested. Double check the submission date.

If you are required to submit a printed and bound version of your dissertation or thesis, ensure you have left adequate time to get this completed.

Thesis FAQ's

Thesis printing page count.

Readsdirect.ie use a high quality 100gsm paper semi gloss paper, this means that the maximum number of sheets in each thesis is 270 sheets. This is for a thesis printed on one side or 470 pages if printed on both sides of the page. We suggest you check with the regulations from your college but the above page count would be sufficient for most colleges. Larger page count: If the page count is above the readsdirect.ie maximum we would suggest 2 volumes. If you have any questions contact us at [email protected] to discuss your options and find a resolution.

Correct way to submit my thesis

You must save the file correctly in PDF format only – not word, excel, powerpoint, jpg or any other file. In submitting your file in PDF it will insure there is no variance from what you see on your screen or print out. If you have a lot of text boxes , images imported, graphs and so on please check that they have saved correctly. We suggest try print on a home printer a few selected pages you would be worried about to verify if all is correct. If done on word on a mac definitely save to pdf and try flatten any graphics on pages.

1. Click FILE then SAVE AS 2. Name your file correctly i.e. JasonJamesBondBourne.pdf 3. Alter the file type to PDF 4. Determine where you wish to save your pdf file i.e in a Folder called thesis or on your desktop called thesis 5. Then press SAVE 6. We suggest you open the saved pdf and check all is ok. 7. Remember if re-saving the file call it a different name or jasonjamesbondbourne.pdf

1. Click FILE then SAVE AS 2. Name your file correctly I.E JasonJamesBondBourne.pdf 3. Alter the file type to PDF 4. Determine where you wish to save your pdf file i.e in a Folder called thesis or on your desktop called thesis 5. Then press SAVE 6. We suggest you open the saved pdf and check all is ok. 7. Please click here and follow the instructions to download your access to pdf

I’m using the Pages App on iOS:

1. Go to Tools [the spanner icon at the top right] 2. Select ‘Share and Print’ 3. The select ‘Send a Copy’ or ‘Open in Another App’ 4. You will be given both PDF and Word as options!

Tips and rules to follow before finally submitting for print

1. Make sure you proof read the file again and check that any changes you made were saved and that the correct file name is saved. 2. The cost of colour and black and white – try ascertain the amount of colour pages you have and black and white to gauge a final cost for printing – the binding for hardback is already at an incredibly low €25 softbinding from €3. 3. Quotes and urls can be in colour in your final pdf – this will class as a colour page so if you do not need them in colour change to grayscale when saving pdf. 4. Again check all as the final submitted file is non negotiable once printed and paid for.• Minimum margins: • All pages should have a 2.5cm (1”) minimum margin around all sides so we can print the thesis and bind it correctly.• ReadsDirect.ie will only print your thesis single-sided only on high quality 100 gsm white paper.• If you need double sided you must state this clearly or notify print department.

Printed copies of my thesis!

ReadsDirect.ie recommend that a minimum of 2 hardback and 1 soft back copy is produced, but this is entirely your choice. 1 copy for yourself as a souvenir and to show off to everyone ! 1 copy for your lecturer and 1 soft copy for maybe someone else to read and advise.

My thesis hardbind cover layout ?

Normally in gold foil – if silver foil please advise at the time. • Your full title of your work / thesis• State your full name as author • The title of your course /award • The year of submission- check with your college/university for exact requirements here if you are unsure your Course Code doing this will allow any library staff to reference your work at a later date. • The spine of your thesis is in gold foil with the below information • The year of submission- check with your college/university for exact requirements here if you are unsure • Your full title of your work / thesis• Course code • State your full name as author

We suggest you check with your college/university for exact requirements and regulations if you are unsure on what goes on the cover or the spine of your thesis The information printed by us in gold or silver foil on the cover of your thesis will be exactly in accordance with the Preview you see online. ALL INFORMATION WE ARE SUPPLIED WILL BE PRINTED IN GOLD FOIL OR SILVER FOIL AS PER THE PREVIEW YOU SEE ONLINE. The information printed in gold or silver foil by us on the cover and spine of your thesis is specified by you, so we encourage you to read and carefully enter the information your college or university requires in our Order Form.Again the information we print is supplied by you so we re iterate to double check all text on covers and spines and check in with what the college or university regulations are – maybe get advise off a fellow student on your course or if in a whats app group share your info and pictures of finished files .

Single sided print or double sided!

We can print either option for you – check with your college to see what the specific regulations are also allow for this when you are typing up your thesis regularly check the word counts and page counts.Test them by saving in pdf to see page count – so you can either add or subtract to reach min or max page count. Some colleges and courses will want double sided or single sided – so please check first before you start the thesis. If single sided specify this on the order form as its very easy to follow .If you require double sided printing make sure you check the page numbering is correctly positioned like centre so it runs coherently throughout your thesis

Colour printing costs!

To save the best possible money on your thesis remember that colour pages should only be colour where necessary. Again check your file for the colour pages to make sure you are happy with the final page count. We are only 25c per colour page and 0.05 cent per black and white page.As we are the lowest prices for thesis printing you will save money.

Thesis paper quality!

100 gsm semi gloss paper excellent for thesis printing and allowing great colour exposure. The black and white looks excellent on the paper also – do not save the pages in black and white as a gradi-ent or grayscale as this will not come out black when printed. All hyperlinks / URLs / web or e-mail addresses / headers and footers must be converted from colour and greyscale. Reason is often they can default to this, so make sure they are saved into black and white. Congratulations on completing your thesis now enjoy the reproduction from readsdirect.ie and save money

Please complete all sections that apply to your order. For any queries about the form, just give us a call on (01) 293 9983 or send an email to [email protected] You can also drop in any of our stores to submit your order.

Tesla shareholders braced for worst results in seven years

Investors want to know whether electric-car maker is in the midst of a major change in direction.

thesis services dublin

Tesla has already reported an 8 per cent fall in car sales in the first three months of the year.

Tesla shareholders are bracing themselves for the carmaker’s worst performance in seven years in quarterly results this week, as it wrestles with slowing demand and a brutal price war.

But they also want to know whether Elon Musk’s company is in the midst of a major change in direction, after reports that it was slowing plans for a cheaper $25,000 electric car — known unofficially as the Model 2 — in favour of focusing on self-driving “robotaxis”.

Musk has denied there has been any change in plan on the Model 2, but has also said that focusing on autonomy was “a blindingly obvious move” and last week announced that a Tesla robotaxi would launch on August 8.

Investors, who are already digesting a steadily falling share price, disappointing sales figures, and a contentious plan to move company headquarters from Delaware to Texas, face another conundrum: whether Tesla will become a large-scale manufacturer, or a smaller provider of autonomous technology.

“It’s always been a margin versus volume debate for them, and this is the latest twist,” said James Anderson, a managing partner at Lingotto Investment Management, which holds Tesla shares.

“Whether it is a good twist depends vitally and decisively on what the shift to autonomous brings,” he told the Financial Times.

The public unveiling of the robotaxi in August “may well be make-or-break time for [Tesla’s] long-promised” self-driving technology, he added.

Tom Slater from Baillie Gifford, a top-15 Tesla shareholder, said this year would be “quieter” for Tesla sales, but added that investors were enthusiastic about the potential of its self-driving cars. “If you look at all the reviews of the latest version of their full self-driving software, it’s a massive leap forward,” he said during a recent presentation.

Tesla’s “full self-driving” mode — which customers can access for $99 a month — allows the car to steer, brake and accelerate without human intervention. But it is not fully autonomous because it still requires the driver to pay attention.

Tesla investor Christopher Tsai from Tsai Capital said that while he expected competition for electric vehicles would intensify and that Tesla would lose market share, “we also believe the company will increase production and deliveries substantially in the years to come and further its lead in autonomous driving”.

Gary Black, managing partner of The Future Fund, another shareholder, said many investors were asking him what the company would do this week. “Much depends on how [Musk] frames timing of the $25,000″ car, he said, adding that he still expected production to start in 2026 “despite robotaxi prioritisation”.

However, Barclays analyst Dan Levy said investors seeking clarity about Tesla’s strategy were likely to be disappointed. “Plans for Model 2 will likely get most attention but don’t expect a satisfying answer,” Levy said.

The company’s quarterly results are also expected to be underwhelming. Analysts are predicting they will show the lowest gross margin since early 2017, when it had just begun manufacturing its first mass-market car, the Model 3.

Levy said he expected “modestly negative” free cash flow, which would be the first quarter of negative cash since the start of 2020.

Tesla has already reported an 8 per cent fall in car sales in the first three months of the year compared with the same period in 2023.

The downbeat news and questions about direction may even prompt a change of heart among some diehard fans.

“We view Tesla’s shift as thesis-changing, and worry the stock will need to undergo a potentially painful transition in ownership base,” said Deutsche Bank analyst Emmanuel Rosner, who downgraded the stock from buy to hold.

“Investors previously focused on Tesla’s EV volume and cost advantage will potentially throw in the towel and eventually be replaced by AI/tech investors with longer time horizons.”

He added: “There is considerable risk from going [all in] for autonomy.” – Copyright The Financial Times Limited 2024

Stardust survivor Antoinette Keegan says families want a public apology for Ireland’s worst ever fire disaster.

The deaths of 48 people in the worst fire in the history of Ireland have been ruled by a jury as unlawful killing.

A jury at Dublin District Coroner's Court delivered majority verdicts on the victims of the 1981 Stardust nightclub fire in the city on Thursday.

The venue in Artane, north Dublin, was packed with around 800 people when the fire broke out in the early hours of Valentine's Day.

The Stardust fire - Dublin, Ireland in the early hours of 14 February 1981. Some 800 people had attended a disco there, of whom 48 died and 214 were injured as a result of the fire.

More than 200 people were injured in the disaster.

Fresh inquests into the deaths, the longest held in Ireland, were ordered by the country's attorney general in 2019, but only began last year.

A jury, made up of seven women and five men, delivered the verdict on Thursday after 11 days of deliberation.

Some family members of the victims jumped to their feet and clapped at the verdict, while others were moved to tears as they remained in their seat.

The jury also established that the fire started as a result of an electrical fault in an airing cupboard.

In the ballroom, foam in the seating, the height of the ceiling in an alcove, and carpet tiles on the wall all contributed to the spread of the fire, the jurors found.

Several factors, including lack of visibility because of black smoke, the toxicity of the smoke and/or gases, the heat of the fire, the speed of the fire's spread, lack of staff preparedness and the failure of the emergency lighting system were all factors that impeded the victims in escaping the building.

The jury was unable to determine when the blaze started but said it was first seen outside the building between 1.20am and 1.40am.

It said the fire was first seen inside the ballroom between 1.35am and 1.40am.

After the verdict, Maurice Frazer, whose sister Thelma died in the fire, spoke about "the unbearable pain of losing parents, siblings and cherished friends even decades later".

"For those decades, our hearts and minds have been shattered, and the mental toll has been overwhelming and exhausting, persisting day after weary day.

"In 2009, the finding of the Stardust Tribunal 1981 - probable arson - was finally removed. That's 28 years of our loved ones' names smeared with the label of arson - one of the most despicable crimes imaginable."

The family member demanded "a meaningful public apology from the Irish state".

"While today brings a glimmer of relief, we now know deep down that it can never erase the void left by our loved ones' absence.

"Yet amidst the sorrow, there's a flicker of hope. Today marks a turning point, a step towards closure. Healing towards a future where justice prevails."

Antoinette Keegan, whose two sisters Mary and Martina died in the blaze, said it was an "overwhelming day".

Ms Keegan, who survived the fire, said: "This day is for the 48."

Bridget McDermott, who lost three children in the fire - William, Marcella and George, was in court for the verdicts.

Her daughter Louise paid tribute to her mother afterwards.

"Our mother is here, and we don't know how she's still with us, but she is and she was here today to get the unlawful killing (verdicts) of her three children," she said.

"It was a very emotional day for all the families here, all of us. For 43 years we had to fight and we shouldn't have had to have done. None of us. We shouldn't be here now, this should have been sorted and done long ago."

The timeline of the Stardust families 40-year campaign

13/14 February 1981 - Hundreds of revellers try to escape through fire exits when a blaze breaks out the Stardust nightclub in Artane, north Dublin, in the early hours of Valentine's Day. Several of the exits are chained closed, while some windows are blocked by iron bars. Many people are crushed in the rush to get out, others die from inhaling poisonous gases.

November 1981 - After 122 days, a tribunal of inquiry under Mr Justice Ronan Keane concludes the fire was probably caused by arson rather than accident, a finding contested by relatives ever since. Stardust manager Eamon Butterly is allowed to claim IR£581,000 compensation for "malicious damage" from the state.

May 1985 - John Keegan, whose daughters Martina and Mary died in the blaze, sets up the Stardust Victims' Committee.

December 1986 - Mr Keegan dies the same day as he loses a Supreme Court case for personal injuries following the deaths of his daughters. The group campaigns for a new inquiry for the next two decades.

November 2003 - An independent report, written by a researcher for the Stardust families, is given to the Department of Justice. They maintain it contains expert evidence which disputes the original tribunal's findings.

February 2006 - More than 200 relatives and friends of the Stardust victims begin a 13-week protest at the site of the fire over plans by Mr Butterly to open a pub at the site on the 25th anniversary.

December 2006 - Former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern announces an external independent examination of all evidence relating to the fire. The bodies of five victims, buried in a communal plot in St Fintan's Cemetery in Sutton, would be exhumed for identification.

March 2008 - Stardust families withdraw support from a government-organised review of new information, claiming chair John Gallagher SC has represented police at inquests into the deaths. Barrister Paul Coffey takes over the review.

January 2009 - Families express relief as the report rules there is no evidence to prove the cause of the fire was arson.

February 2014 - Irish police launch a criminal investigation into concerns over evidence from a number of witnesses at the 1981 tribunal.

January 2016 - Ireland's director of public prosecutions will not order prosecutions of witnesses who allegedly committed perjury during the 1981 tribunal.

November 2017 - A judge rules that no new independent inquiry is warranted and criticises the evidence presented to him. The families criticise the report as "rude and aggressive".

September 2019 - The then attorney general of Ireland directs that fresh inquests should be held into the deaths after a 37-page submission is filed on behalf of Antoinette Keegan and relatives of 42 of the 48 people who died in the fire. The families say they have discovered new evidence, through a Freedom of Information request as well as previously unheard witness testimony.

November 2022 - Former Stardust manager Eamon Butterly fails in a High Court challenge that the inquest could not make findings of unlawful killing.

April 2023 - The Stardust fire inquests commence.

April 2024 - A verdict of unlawful killing is returned by the jury in the Stardust fire inquests for all 48 people who died in the disaster.

Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane paid tribute to the "persistence and commitment" of the families who had campaigned for fresh inquests.

"To the families, I acknowledge the deaths of these 48 young people is a source of ongoing grief to those who loved them and it remains the defining loss of their lives," she said.

"The fact that these inquests have been held at all is in no small part due to the persistence and commitment of families over the years.

"And, finally, we remember those 48 young people who lost their lives on that fateful night. It is their lives that we've sought to vindicate by way of these inquests."

A tribunal of inquiry set up soon after the fire found arson was the "probable" cause, something the families rejected as it appeared to blame those attending the disco and absolved the club's owners.

The Stardust fire - Dublin, Ireland in the early hours of 14 February 1981. Some 800 people had attended a disco there, of whom 48 died and 214 were injured as a result of the fire.

This is despite evidence that exits in the ballroom were locked, chained or otherwise obstructed, which the jury confirmed this afternoon.

The original inquests in 1982 lasted five days and were confined to recording the medical cause of the deaths and did not examine the circumstances of the fire.

They were themselves awarded IR£581,000 compensation by a Dublin court in 1983.

But victims' relatives kept pushing for a new investigation and, eventually, new inquests were announced, only for legal arguments and wrangling over juror pay to delay proceedings by a further four years.

Ireland's prime minister, Simon Harris, described the Stardust tragedy as "one of the darkest moments in our history".

"A heartbreaking tragedy because of the lives that were lost, the families that were changed forever, and the long, drawn-out struggle for justice that followed," he said.

Mr Harris remembered those who lost their lives and paid tribute to their families for pursuing truth and justice "to ensure that such a disaster never happens again".

He said the Irish government will consider the verdict in full, and the recommendations of the jury.

"48 young people never came home that night, but as Taoiseach I want to say this to their families; You never gave up on justice for them, you never let Ireland forget about them. They were never alone, and our country owes you a great debt for that."

Irish president Michael D Higgins said: "Today's findings have at last brought a conclusion as to the circumstances of their death: to the cause of the fire, to the factors which contributed to its spread, to the factors which impeded those who died in their ability to escape and to access and exit through emergency exits, by its ultimate verdict of unlawful killing," he said.

"Findings which again have come about thanks to the tireless campaigning and work of those who cared most for the loss and appropriate memory of each of those who died.

"I am very conscious that today will be a day of the deepest emotions for the loved ones of those who died. A day of vindication and of honour, but also a day of the deepest sadness and regret. I think in particular of those whose passing means this conclusion comes too late for them.
