Our Executive Team

Katherine akbar.

President and award-winning writer Katherine Akbar holds a BA in political science with high honors from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University.

She is a contributing author of Seeing the Light: Personal Encounters with the Middle East and Islam and has published academic papers in the Michigan Journal of Political Science and the Michigan State Journal of International Law. She received the Virginia Voss Memorial Award for Excellence in Writing in two categories – Journalism and Academic Writing.

After serving as a U.S. diplomat in Africa and Italy, Katherine worked as a human rights professional in the Middle East, where she won $3M for grant projects she developed and wrote. As executive director of a civil rights non-profit in New York, Katherine did extensive public speaking. Katherine’s nine years’ teaching and tutoring experience and two years’ professional acting experience also enable her to provide mock interview services and coaching.

She ghost wrote the five-star-rated Success: Tales from the Front by Darnell Palmer. Katherine supervises all services and is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management. Newly wed to Michael Akbar, Katherine is planning a family. When not working at YES, Katherine can be seen acting on area stages and screens.

Michael Akbar is a Certified Professional Career Coach, Certified Federal Career Coach, Certified Diagnostic Coach, and Certified Business Advisor. He is also a senior executive with extensive experience working in start-up,

mature, and growth business environments. He has a unique blend of sales, marketing, and operations experience in the IT, manufacturing, services, and federal sectors, as well as nonprofit board of directors experience. In addition to 7 years helping people get their dream job, Michael has spent 14 years as an entrepreneur coaching business owners to break through their barriers to success. Throughout, he has demonstrated strong communications and process skills, offering strategic and tactical leadership during significant transitions. Michael’s CPCC certification is from the same association that provides Certified Professional Resume Writers with Certified Professional Resume Writer (CPRW) certification. efficiency. Now, as a client success manager, Daisy empowers clients in their career journeys. Trust is paramount, and Daisy has earned it through dedication and experience. You can count on her for guidance, support, and a dash of humor to support your career aspirations.

Beyond her professional life, Daisy finds joy in spending time with her son, who has special needs. This relationship has expanded her patience, ability to connect with individuals from diverse backgrounds, and skills in keeping people on track. Once, she proudly brought home a waffle maker with the brand name Tough Mama. Her son cheekily quipped, “But Mom, I don’t need this—I already have a tough mama!”

Over the 8 years before joining YES, Jen wielded her mathematical magic and middle-schooler wrangling skills as a private school teacher. Simultaneously, she embraced the role of faculty assistant, tackling administrative tasks 

to support the College director. She is a proud graduate of the Bachelor of Elementary Education program at Saint Michael's College of Laguna in the Philippines. When not helping YES clients get their edge for success, she ventures into the thrilling realm of dog annoyance with her trusty partner in crime, a Japanese spitz named Cookie. His fiction has appeared on The Other Stories podcast, and his first poetry chapbook—A Mouth Full of Feathers—came out in 2012. When I started my coaching business, I knew I had 20+ years of experience placing candidates in full-time and temporary positions. I had worked with Fortune 100 companies, as well as some of the most well-known start-ups and tech companies still in business today. Even with that, I wanted to be sure that my clients knew that an organization had tested my knowledge and signed off that I know the hiring space. Coaching and résumé writing is a predominately unregulated industry and I wanted to provide assurance to my clients that I was invested in keeping up with trends, best practices, and future changes in the world of work.

I first obtained my Certified Professional Résumé Writer designation in 2018. I also decided to complete the Certified Professional Career Coach designation at that time. In 2021, I went on to obtain the Certified Digital Career Strategist certification. These three certifications from the Professional Association of Résumé Writers and Career Coaches provide reassurance to my clients that my peers have reviewed my strategy and work product and show my commitment to my continuing education in the hiring and coaching space.

I chose to work with the  Professional Association of Résumé Writers and Career Coaches (PARWCC)  for my certifications. The organization has been around since 1990. That’s just a touch longer than I have been in workforce solutions. The organization members have been there through technology innovations, the rise of staffing firms and contract recruiters, the retirement of fax machines for emails, and the advent of online applications.

That may sound irrelevant in light of the technology available to us, but at the end of the day, a person still makes the final hiring decision. All the rest of the process is just the process. Receiving a certification from a body that only focuses on résumés, interviews, hiring, and job placement technology was important to me. As I continue in my practice, I am committed to my continuing education and staying abreast of industry changes and best practices.

I unknowingly started a fully functional virtual career services business at the beginning of the Corona Virus Pandemic to help the culture learn how to transition to the Virtual Age (get a remote job) and stay safe while still employed. So many people were losing their jobs while I had many to choose from. I was trained to be a Professional Resume Writer and Career Coach years before the lockdowns started in March 2020, but I was not providing any of those services to anyone. I would just talk about it because everybody that knew me already knew that I used to do career services. I was not utilizing ANY of my crafts when the virus broke out.

During the beginning of the pandemic, I was working as a teacher.
