Offered jointly by the College of Computing and the College of Engineering, the Ph.D. program in Robotics is the first truly multidisciplinary robotics degree of its kind in the world—and only the second robotics doctorate offered in the U.S. The program involves the schools of Interactive Computing, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering.

We educate a new generation of robotics researchers who are prepared to be impactful contributors upon entering the high-tech workforce. The Institute for Robotics & Intelligent Machines (IRIM) serves as the flagship for Tech’s robotics efforts; therefore, IRIM has an integral relationship with the program, and many IRIM faculty members serve as research advisors to students pursuing the degree. The Robotics program supports Tech’s mission to provide instruction in disciplines related to science, technology, and interdisciplinary areas.

Program of Study

The main emphasis of the Ph.D. program is the successful completion of an original and independent research thesis. The degree requirements are designed around this goal.

Minimum Requirements

  • Completion of 36 semester hours of courses with a letter grade
  • Passing a comprehensive qualifying exam with written and oral components.
  • Successfully conducting, documenting, and defending a piece of original research culminating in a doctoral thesis.

Home Unit Teaching Apprenticeship and Extra-curricular Requirements Robotics Ph.D. students are subject to their home unit's teaching apprenticeship requirements (e.g., a certain number of semesters serving as a TA) and other the extra-curricular requirements such as seminar attendance or annual review process. For example, students with home units in BME, IC, and ME are required to do two semesters of teaching practicum or apprenticeship and register for the corresponding courses. Students should contact their home units for details for any departmental requirements that are in addition to the Robotics degree requirements. Students are responsible for ensuring that they understand and satisfy any home unit requirements as well as the Robotics program and Institute requirements.

*A maximum of two classes (6 semester hours) at the 4000 level may be used to satisfy the minor requirements only. No courses used to satisfy any bachelor's degree requirements can be used towards a graduate degree.

How two PhD students overcame the odds to snag tenure-track jobs

Academic careers are meant to follow a set trajectory: PhD student, postdoctoral researcher, tenure-track job. But when we were thinking about what to do after our PhDs, we decided to skip the postdoc stage and go straight for tenure-track jobs owing to visa restrictions (Q.L., an international student at the time) and financial considerations (V.R., who had the looming pressure to pay student loans while supporting a family). Our mentors and peers were sceptical. A faculty member advised one of us (Q.L.) against it. Even we weren’t sure we could do it — but we did. By the end of our PhDs, we had received 15 tenure-track offers between us.

At a professional-development workshop, we were able to tell the discouraging faculty member that we would be starting our laboratories, not working as postdocs. His response — “I guess I was wrong” — was a moment of vindication for us. In proving others wrong, we had also disproved our own doubts of success.

We’ve previously shared our advice for maintaining an organized and successful job hunt . Here, we aim to demystify the interview process, showing that, even when the road seems impossible, there are routes to achieving your goals. We think that, with determination, support and a clear understanding of one’s values and goals, the academic-job market can be navigated successfully, even for those who, like us, choose to forgo the typical postdoc route.

Divas, captains, ghosts, ants and bumble-bees: collaborator attitudes explained

PhD students aspiring to tenure-track positions must recognize that, beyond the standard interview preparation, you should have a good record of research. We were unusual PhD graduates: by the time V.R. applied, she had published about 90 peer-reviewed papers after working full-time as a data analyst before starting her PhD (she also worked part-time during the PhD). In addition, V.R. had received several nationally competitive awards and fellowships. Q.L. had published more than 25 peer-reviewed papers, released 2 software packages (with more than 30,000 downloads), developed 3 web apps for statistical analysis and received prestigious research awards and funding.

Both of us also had master’s degrees in quantitative methods.

We aim to demystify the pre-interview screening and on-campus interviews. Interviewing can be nerve-wracking, and so we provide practical advice and insights on the basis of our personal experiences.

Research the institutions, departments and locations

Before a prescreening interview, do your homework on the institutions and departments. Familiarize yourself with faculty members and their research. Identify centres and institutes that complement your work and early-career programmes that would help you as you launch your career. Also, research the location and be ready to answer questions about why you want to live there. For example, we noticed that interviews were more likely to come from universities in states that we already had ties to — by having studied there or having lived in a nearby state. Personal motivations might make or break an interview; because faculty searches are costly, the search committee might take into consideration the likelihood of you coming to, living in and staying around the area.

People, passion, publishable: an early-career researcher’s checklist for prioritizing projects

Don’t start your job talk from scratch

Job talks are central to the faculty job search. The talk typically summarizes the core themes of your research and discusses your published, ongoing and future work as a cohesive and engaging narrative. At the end of the talk, you should have convinced the department that your work is important and fundable, that you will thrive at their institution, that you would be a great fit as a colleague and that you can teach students. Using materials from previous talks can ensure that you are familiar with the details, help you to feel more at ease and hopefully allow you to discuss your work more confidently. V. R. used some of her slides from talks she gave for her master’s degree, qualifying exams and dissertation proposal. Q.L. made slides from past posters and presentations that had already been refined and rehearsed.

Anticipate common interview questions

Prepare for a range of interview questions, and have a cohesive story ready about your research and why moving to that institution fits with your future research. In first-round online screening interviews, it was common to get questions about our teaching philosophy, future goals and fit with the department as well as why we would want to live in that particular location. We received fewer questions than we expected during in-person interviews; those were more about allowing us to ask questions about the department, culture, institution and what it’s like living in the area. We both had lists of questions that we asked depending on whether we were talking to, students or faculty members (junior, senior, out-of-area or teaching).

Demonstrate enthusiasm and engagement

Show genuine enthusiasm for the position and the opportunity to contribute to the institution’s academic community, both ahead of and during an interview. Engage with the interviewers by asking thoughtful questions about their research, departmental culture, teaching or the resources available. This demonstrates your interest in becoming an active and valued member of the department. Many in-person interviews involved one-on-one discussions with faculty members, as well as group interviews with students. V.R. learnt the hard way that yes, some might even ask inappropriate, and sometimes illegal, questions — on topics such as age, marriage or children. It’s helpful to have prepared answers, or deflections, for such questions.

Prepare for on-campus interviews

If you progress to the on-campus interview stage, prepare extensively by reviewing the itinerary, schedules and departmental expectations. Plan interactive and engaging research and teaching presentations tailored to the specific audience, showcasing your ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. Bring a notebook or tablet to write questions and answers to consider if you get an offer. Have your travel bags ready, because interview offers might come with little notice.

Prepare to be tired

Our interviews generally lasted one or two days. There is talking, walking and eating! Even when you are excited about a particular interview, the process can take a toll on you. If you can, schedule some rest time, and wear professional but comfortable clothes and shoes during interview days.

Negotiate job offers effectively

If you receive job offers, you must negotiate effectively to secure the best possible terms. Look up salary expectations and the cost of living in the area to inform your negotiation. Consider negotiating not only the financial aspects, but also your teaching load, research support, start-up funds and professional-development opportunities. Communicate your needs and expectations while remaining professional and open to a collaborative negotiation process. Be ready to negotiate over the phone or through e-mail.

Leverage multiple offers

If, like we did, you find yourself with multiple job offers, it’s essential to understand that each offer can serve as leverage in negotiations. Sharing — without fully disclosing the names of the places where you have other opportunities — can prompt institutions to improve their offers. Approach this carefully, ensuring that you communicate in a way that is professional and not confrontational. Express enthusiasm for each opportunity while highlighting your desire to make the best decision on the basis of a comprehensive evaluation of all offers. We used these negotiations as opportunities to find the institutions that would best support our research.

Seek guidance and support

Throughout the job-search process, seek guidance and support from mentors, faculty advisers or career consultants. They can provide valuable insights, review your negotiation strategies and offer advice from their own experiences. When considering benefits across multiple institutions, such as health insurance and retirement plans, we consulted financial advisers to determine our best paths.

Overall, we think that, with a strategic, personalized approach, complemented by a willingness to learn from each experience, PhD students can enhance their appeal to hiring committees, turning the daunting journey towards tenure-track positions into a series of informed, strategic steps. Emory’s Class of 2023 graduated last May well equipped to start their careers, landing jobs or graduate school placements around the world.

The annual Career and Professional Development survey conducted six months after Commencement shows that 97% of 2023 graduates were working or continuing their education. Another 1% reported volunteering, leaving just 2% who were seeking their next step.

Those outcomes were slightly higher than outcomes for the Class of 2022, which had about 95% reporting that they were working, studying or volunteering.

This year’s graduating class looks to continue that positive arc and reaffirms the value that employers and graduate schools place on liberal arts skillsets, such as creative problem-solving, appreciation for learning new knowledge, critical thinking and strong communication.

It also reflects how the first year of Emory’s Pathways Center — which integrates multiple programs focused on career discernment and development — helps students visualize ways to translate those skills into professional lives of meaning and consequence.

“We want every Emory student to cultivate curiosity, test out their theories of career identity through experiential learning, and make connections with alumni,” says Branden Grimmett , who leads the Pathways Center as vice provost for career and professional development and Emory College associate dean.

“Career clarity is not achieved simply through thinking about one’s future — it requires action,” Grimmett says. “The Pathways Center has established a robust set of opportunities to help students try various fields and industries within a safe and supportive environment.”

Pathways officials report that last spring’s job market was robust for recent graduates, especially in the health care, finance, government/nonprofit and technology fields.

Asia Waller, the director of recruiting and employer development at Pathways, expects a similar market this year, though Pathways officials encourage seniors and other students to connect with the center’s resources and programs for the latest job openings and opportunities.

“There is a good mix of opportunities out there in different industries, and the market is more robust than last year,” Waller says. “A lot of the opportunities require the transferrable skills Emory students are known for developing.”

Graduate school placements were also exceptional for the Class of 2023.

Surpassing the national average by 9%, the law school acceptance rate for Emory graduates reached an outstanding 78%, with notable admissions to Emory, Georgia State, Georgetown and NYU.  T he medical school acceptance rate for the 2023 application cycle for Emory students was 65%, exceeding the national average by 19%.

Career discernment for liberal arts students

Elizabeth Hsieh is among the 2023 graduates who took full advantage of Pathways programs and other Emory opportunities to find her way.

An English major, Hsieh networked with professors to land an internship building a database of short stories at the literary studio Plympton.

Meeting with Carol Riddock, the associate director of pre-law advising in Career and Professional Development within Pathways, helped Hsieh secure internships at the Carter Center and New American Pathways.

Riddock also supported Hsieh’s undergraduate research work, helping with administrative tasks and qualitative research related to assistant nursing professor Glenna Brewster’s intervention program for the caregivers of people with dementia.

That experience gave Hsieh a sense of how she would handle new tasks and collaborate with a supervisor. She uses those skills daily as a legal analyst with the Dover & Luner law firm in California — which in turn has reinforced that a legal career is her best fit. She plans to apply to law school in the next year.

“Carol made me feel supported in exploring all sorts of options for what felt right and most stimulating for me,” Hsieh says. “I feel like Emory prepared me to take on a job where I would do well by learning new things all the time.” 

Intentional steps toward grad school

Emory’s pre-health advising team helps students whose trajectory calls for building on their skills through graduate school. The opt-in programming provides peer and professional mentors to guide undergraduates interested in health care professions, from dentistry to physical therapy to veterinary medicine.

Emory launched the team 15 years ago to supplement academic advisors on course sequencing and to offer hands-on guidance with test preparation, application advising and social support.

Pre-health advising director Kim Molee explains that engagement has grown every year in the program, particularly now that it is a visible component within the Pathways Center.

“There are a lot of intentional steps, from students’ first years and into gap years, to ensure that they can be competitive for any graduate or health care program they select,” Molee says. “We talk in detail about holistic development and keep it as universal as we can, so they can consider their best path.”

Emory’s resources and ethos also reinforce the idea that the concept of the best path is apt to change throughout students’ experiences.

Peter Cooke experienced that shift as an undergraduate. He didn’t feel certain about his planned path of law school, even after completing an undergraduate research project on urban policy and finishing his political science and sociology double major studies in his junior year.

But something clicked when he began helping with photography and social media coverage for the university’s pre-college summer program .

He found the writing skills and creativity from his majors translated well in the communications role. During his senior year, Cooke further sharpened his marketing skills by continuing to work with the Office of International and Summer Programs and as a social media ambassador for Emory College.

It became clear that law school was no longer the best fit. The day after Commencement, the engineering consultancy Arcadis offered Cooke a yearlong communications internship. He accepted and has used the experience to further develop his project management and content management skills.

He plans to look for a marketing and communications role next — ideally in music or entertainment, due to his background as a trained cellist. Also on Cooke’s to-do list this spring?  Reach out to the Pathways Center about possible alumni mentors or advisers who can aid in his career development.

Survey data from Emory Career and Professional Development show that 98% of 2023 graduates are pursuing chosen opportunities, such as starting careers, graduate school and volunteering, within six months of graduation.

Accelerating Careers: A Visit to SAS for Academic Partners’ Graduate Students and Postdocs

The Accelerate to Industry program continues to bridge the gap between academia and industry, offering invaluable experiences for graduate students and postdocs. Most recently, participants from our academic partner institution network (Clemson University, NC State University, Duke University, NC A&T, Wake Forest University, and UNC Chapel-Hill) had the privilege of visiting SAS , a leading global analytics company, for an enriching site visit. A huge thank you to Clemson University and their team for setting up such a wonderful A2i Connect event for A2i participants.

The visit provided an immersive experience into the world of analytics and business intelligence, showcasing the innovative solutions and technologies that SAS is renowned for. Participants had the opportunity to engage with SAS professionals as well as other industry leaders using analytics (Jump, Eli Lilly, Truist, and ABB), gaining insights into how to prepare themselves for the job search and a career in industry.

Networking played a crucial role during the visit, with participants connecting with various professionals from SAS and other companies, as well as graduate students and postdocs from different universities.

Overall, the site visit to SAS was a resounding success, offering a glimpse into the dynamic world of industry and inspiring participants to consider exciting career paths. The experience was a testament to the ongoing commitment of the Accelerate to Industry program to empower graduate students and postdocs on their journey to industry success.

We look forward to more enriching experiences and collaborations as we continue to accelerate careers and forge meaningful connections between academia and industry.

ASU 2024 spring graduation: When is it, what can I bring and where should I park?

Graduation day is less than a month away for students across Arizona. Arizona State University students will celebrate among thousands of their peers this May at the university’s spring commencement ceremonies.

Many who are set to graduate started their college careers in the midst of a global pandemic.

Last year, ASU celebrated 19,700 graduating students. Of them, 15% were international students, roughly 70% attended in-person and nearly half were Arizona residents. ASU, with campuses in Tempe and Phoenix, is one of the largest universities in the country with more than 140,000 students enrolled in total.

Here’s what to know before celebration day for the Sun Devils.

When is ASU graduation?

This year, spring commencement will be on May 6 for both graduate and undergraduate ASU students. The ceremonies will be at different times of day, allowing guests to attend both. The undergraduate ceremony will last around 90 minutes and no tickets are required for either ceremony.

ASU graduate commencement will be at 9 a.m. at Desert Financial Arena. Doors are set to open at 7:30 a.m.

Undergraduate commencement will be at 7:30 p.m. at Frank Kush Field at Mountain America Stadium. Doors are set to open at 6 p.m.

More than 30 school-specific convocations are scheduled throughout graduation week. For a full list, including locations and times, visit ASU’s site .

What can I bring to ASU's graduation?

Guests for graduation will have to adhere to ASU’s clear bag policy . All clutch bags larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches will need to be transparent, such as a gallon-sized plastic bag. Seat cushions without pockets or zippers are allowed.

Other prohibited items:

  • Outside beverages
  • Tobacco or e-cigarette products
  • Selfie sticks and tripods
  • Full-size strollers
  • Noisemakers
  • All weapons

All guests with non-compliant bags will need to return items to their car.

Where should I park at ASU's graduation?

Agility Robotics lays off some staff amid commercialization focus

Agility Robotics on Thursday confirmed that it has laid off a “small number” of employees. The well-funded Oregon-based firm says the job loss is part of a company-wide focus on commercialization efforts.

“As part of Agility’s ongoing efforts to structure the company for success, we have parted ways with a small number of employees that were not central to core product development and commercialization,” the company wrote in a statement provided to TechCrunch. “At the same time, we are focused on meeting the extraordinary demand for bipedal robots across industrial use cases. That means ramping up production of Digit while continuing to win top-tier global customers, and adding new roles that meet these goals. We believe today’s actions will allow us to focus on the areas that drive productization, commercialization, and production of Digit.”

Agility was ahead of the industrial humanoid curve with its bipedal robot, Digit. The firm was spun out of research conducted at Oregon State University. There’s been no lack of interest in its impressive legged robots over the years. Ford was an early champion, as Agility explored Digit’s last-mile-delivery potential. Ultimately, however, those efforts were placed on the back burner, as the company shifted focus to understaffed warehouses.

There’s been no lack of funding for Agility’s efforts, despite a general slowdown in investments in and adoption of robotic systems, both of which can be seen as corrections following a massive pandemic-fueled boom.

Two years ago this month, the company announced a $150 million Series B. Amazon notably participated in the round by way of its Industrial Innovation Fund. The retail giant subsequently announced that it would pilot Digits as part of its fulfillment center workflow. The pilots have since ended, but neither company has announced next steps.

A number of other humanoid robotics firms have announced their own pilots in recent months, including Figure with BMW and Apptronik with Mercedes . Last month at Modex, Agility showcased updates to Digit’s end effectors designed specifically for automotive manufacturing workflows.

Agility has also made a number of high-profile hires over the past year, including Magic Leap CEO Peggy Johnson joining as chief executive, Fetch CEO Melonee Wise as CTO and former Apple and Ford executive Aindrea Campbell in as COO.

The company’s jobs page currently lists five open roles, largely focused on engineering and manufacturing.

Amazon-backed humanoid firm Agility Robotics laid off a 'small number' of staff

Agility Robotics reduced the size of its workforce on Wednesday.

The company told Business Insider that the job cuts affected a "small number" of employees.

"As part of Agility's ongoing efforts to structure the company for success, we have parted ways with a small number of employees that were not central to core product development and commercialization," a spokesperson said.

Amazon is testing its Agility's Digit robots in a research and development facility near Seattle. The tech giant has previously funded Agility as part of its first round of investments through its $1 billion Amazon Industrial Innovation Fund.

An electrical engineer at the humanoid robotics firm shared in posts on LinkedIn and X that he was "one of the many laid off" at the company.

He added that he was "surprised at the timing" because he'd only just been moved from the support engineering team to the electrical engineering team last year.

Chief people officer Lisa Haugh commented on the LinkedIn post, saying she was "sorry" that he was "a part of the small group impacted" by the layoffs. It's not clear exactly how many employees Agility has or how many jobs were cut.

The job cuts underline the difficulty some robotics firms have with funding their activities even with the backing of tech giants, as Crunchbase has reported .

Agility also told BI that along with cutting jobs, it's also focused on meeting the "extraordinary demand for bipedal robots across industrial use cases."

"That means ramping up production of Digit while continuing to win top-tier global customers, and adding new roles that meet these goals. We believe today's actions will allow us to focus on the areas that drive productization, commercialization, and production of Digit."

The two-legged Digit can lift and move items in warehouses and distribution centers.

The company announced last month that it appointed a new CEO, Peggy Johnson, as it prepares to open a factory in Oregon later this year to start mass-producing robots.

Johnson previously told BI that it will churn out "hundreds" of its Digit robots in 2025 and then "ramp up capacity to thousands" in the years that follow.

It's been touted by the firm as a way to potentially help ease the labor shortage in the manufacturing industry, as data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics projected there will be about one million openings for laborers and material movers over the next decade.
