The X1’s cabin is fine for a nonluxury SUV, but it's made with a number of hard plastics and cheap materials that are a bit disappointing for a luxury vehicle.

X1 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Using BMW’s iDrive infotainment system is straightforward. The touch screen is responsive, and there are well-placed physical controls. While Apple CarPlay is supported, Android Auto is not.

How Many People Does the X1 Seat?

Up to five people can sit in this BMW. Both rows have comfortable seats. For a small SUV, there’s a decent amount of space, and two average-sized adults can fit comfortably in the rear. Still, there are better options for carrying passengers, such as the Mercedes-Benz GLA .

X1 and Child Car Seats

There are two complete sets of LATCH connectors for the rear outboard seats and a tether anchor for the rear middle seat. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for its ease of use, as the lower anchors can be hard to maneuver around.

Powering this vehicle is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that puts out 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The engine has plenty of pep, helping the BMW launch from a stop and quickly get up to speed. It’s suitable for both city and highway driving.

BMW makes the 2022 X1 in two trim levels: sDrive28i and xDrive28i. Technically, they’re one trim (28i) with the main difference being the drivetrain: The sDrive model has front-wheel drive, and xDrive has all-wheel drive. Features and options are identical between the two.

BMW X1 sDrive28i

The entry-level sDrive28i has a starting MSRP of $35,400. Standard equipment includes an 8.8-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, a USB port, satellite radio, a seven-speaker stereo, SensaTec synthetic leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a power liftgate, automatic climate control, alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, and BMW’s Active Driving Assistant with a pre-collision warning and braking system and lane departure warning.

Several options and packages are available. A $4,350 M Sport package adds an M Sport steering wheel and shadowline exterior trim, and a $2,250 Convenience package comes with a hands-free liftgate, proximity keyless entry, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a panoramic moonroof. Leather seats cost $1,450.

The $4,250 Premium package includes the contents of the Convenience package, as well as a navigation system, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, adaptive headlights, and a head-up display. Wireless device charging and a Wi-Fi hot spot cost $500, and a 12-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound system is available for $875. Other options include sliding and reclining rear seats for $300, adaptive cruise control for $1,000, and park assist for $200.

BMW X1 xDrive28i

The top-of-the-line xDrive28i retails for $37,400. Outside of BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, it has the same features and options as the base trim.

The BMW X1 is a well-rounded luxury subcompact SUV . Not only is it more fun to drive than many of its classmates thanks to its robust engine, good gas mileage, and sporty handling, but it also impresses with its abundance of cargo room and user-friendly infotainment system. Weak Sales: The X1 is currently in the bottom two sellers of the luxury subcompact SUV sales race, leading only its stablemate, the X2 . BMW dealerships have moved 44.5 percent fewer models so far this year than during the same time frame in 2021. Relative to its rivals, the X1 closely trails the Mercedes-Benz GLA , but is behind the Audi Q3 by over 2 to 1.

So you're a young exec with a kid on the way, and you've given up on the thought of piloting a Porsche Boxster to work every day. Don't worry, the BMW X1 is here to remind you that you can have a premium interior, lots of cargo space, and relatively lively performance all packaged in a neat subcompact luxury crossover SUV body suitable for families. The 2022 X1 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-pot delivering 228 horsepower and sends its power to the front or all fours via an eight-speed automatic transmission. The zero to sixty sprint time takes only 6.3 seconds in xDrive guise, and it rides well enough to appease the wife and kids. The BMW X1 will cost you at least $35,400, and competes with the likes of the Audi Q3 . We like its strong performance and ample cargo space, but is that enough to make it a class leader? Let's find out.

What's the Price of the 2022 BMW X1 SUV?

The new BMW X1 is available in two configurations, FWD and AWD, with the sDrive28i set as the entry-spec model with the former drivetrain, and the xDrive28i as the latter. The base model sDrive28i goes for an MSRP of $35,400 in the USA and excludes tax, registration, and a destination fee of $995. Going for the xDrive28i model will cost $37,400. These prices are unchanged from last year. The Audi Q3 is slightly more expensive to begin with, at a base price of $35,900. Fully loaded, the BMW X1 price will top out at just over $50,000 including destination, if you layer on all the extras.

Handling and Driving Impressions

The X1 was never designed to be a sports car. Instead, BMW has aimed to provide a refined ride that, combined with a dose of composure, should leave the driver feeling confident and relaxed. The relaxed nature of the drivetrain, especially the refinement of that transmission, adds greatly to the overall driving experience. On the road, a test drive will reveal that the X1's ride is on the firmer side, but not to the extent that it becomes a serious issue, although low-speed road imperfections can get a bit jarring, especially when fitted with the M sport suspension package. The X1 behaves more like a dynamic sedan than an SUV in this sense. Unfortunately, the electrically assisted power steering in the X1 is overly coddled and phases out most road feedback, which makes it feel less like a BMW and more like an average small SUV. That being said, the X1 still feels stable and planted around corners, and will happily follow steering inputs with quick responses from the nose, while body roll is kept to a minimum. The brakes work well and inspire confidence, especially when pushing on.

Verdict: Is the 2022 BMW X1 A Good SUV?

The X1 will be a wise choice for those who need the extra space of an SUV but don't want an overly bulky vehicle that will feel big and cumbersome. The X1 manages to offer a lot of interior space while at the same time delivering almost sedan-like driving characteristics. We'd go as far as to say it feels practically sporty in the way it operates, too. The ride might be a bit stiff when driving at lower speeds, but it always feels composed and eager to please. The engine is a gem, too - it pulls hard in any gear and offers more than enough go. The interior has a few hard plastic bits, but in general, it feels as premium as any other BMW product, and we appreciate the levels of standard features it comes equipped with. The infotainment system can feel laggy and Android Auto is missing, but the overall experience is decent. There's enough safety equipment and technology to make the X1 one of the safer cars in its class. We'd highly recommend looking at the X1 if you're in the market for a small luxury SUV.

What BMW X1 Model Should I Buy?

While there's only one trim level on offer, new buyers still get to choose between FWD and AWD models. The options list is also available to make your X1 more unique. If we had the money for one, we'd opt for the xDrive28i variant for the added traction benefits and we'd spec it with the optional moonroof and LED headlights. The interior would see the addition of the Premium Package, which adds goodies such as a universal garage door opener and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Other options we would include are the Harman Kardon sound system, wireless charging, as well as heated front seats.

The BMW X3 is a compact luxury crossover SUV that blends luxury and practicality in a rather beautiful package. As the name suggests, the X3 is the larger brother here. Power is provided by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque in either 30i sDrive and 30i xDrive spec. Power is sent to the rear or all four wheels via an eight-speed auto transmission. Power in the X3 isn't significantly more (unless you opt for the much more expensive M40i), and carrying more weight doesn't help either, but the X3 will still beat the X1 in a straight line. The fuel economy on the RWD X3 is 23/29/25 mpg city/highway/combined. The interior of the X3 is slightly more upscale and lacks the obvious hard plastics that can be found in the X1. The cargo area is more significant at 28.7 cubic feet, and there's more interior space as well. Standard features are in the X3's favor, with added goodies like a larger 10.25-inch touchscreen, three-zone climate control, and LED headlights. But, with a higher starting price of $43,700, we would recommend sticking with the capable X1 unless you really need the extra space and luxury which the X3 provides.

As the name suggests, the BMW X2 is one step up from the X1 in the BMW chain of command. The X2 is arguably a more sporty crossover; it will appeal to those who don't need as much cargo space and who will appreciate the sporty dynamics closer to that of a traditional sedan. The X2 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that delivers 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. That's precisely what you get in the X1, although there is a 301-hp version of the X2 on offer for those who really want to go fast. The base model offers the same level of performance as the X1 and a best fuel consumption figure of 24/32/27 mpg city/highway/combined. The interior of the X1 and X2 are comparable, but with the X2 offering slightly less space, especially in the back. Cargo space is also down at 21.6 cubic feet. The interior of the X2 is similar to the X1 in terms of quality and features, with the X2 feeling slightly more sports-orientated. If you're after a more sporty driving experience and don't need the extra space, then go for the X2 - it only costs $1,200 more in base form.

The five-seat BMW X1 is a good fit for shoppers who want good cabin space and ample cargo room in a small SUV that’s easy to maneuver. The X1’s sole engine is a 228-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front- and all-wheel-drive versions are offered, and competitors include the Audi Q3 , Volvo XC40 and Cadillac XT4 .

this is my first bmw, being a toyota and honda guy previously. this is a honda plus, meaning the refinements you wished your honda had, this has. powerful, comfortable and a bit more luxury. not quite the gas mileage of my crv but a super automobile. so if your looking at this you must be contemplating a purchase. do it you won't be sorry.

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold 2022 hands-on: A better foldable-screen laptop

The new thinkpad x1 fold is a leap forward for foldable screen laptops, but it's still extremely expensive.

Early Verdict

The new ThinkPad X1 Fold 2022 delivers a much bigger 16.3-inch display, a more powerful 12th gen processor, comfier keyboard and slimmer bezels, improving on the original X1 Fold in almost every way. But $2,499 is still a lot to spend on a foldable screen laptop, and the accessories cost extra.

The new ThinkPad X1 Fold 2022 improves upon its innovative but underwhelming predecessor in many ways. For one, the screen has grown tremendously from 12.9 inches on the ThinkPad X1 Fold 2020 to 16.3 inches — an increase of 25%. This makes a huge difference, whether you're propping the device up on a stand to review documents or folding it in half to use as a 12-inch clamshell laptop.

Speaking of which, the optional keyboard for this foldable laptop is now full size, so you don't feel like you're typing on Tic Tacs. The specs are beefed up, too, as the new ThinkPad X1 Fold comes with 12th gen Core i5 or Core i7 U series processors, up to 32GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. 

Lenovo has also trimmed the bezels and made the overall design thinner while maximizing durability for a device that supports five different modes. However, with a starting price of $2,499 this is a very pricey slice of the future, and that doesn't include the keyboard or pen.

So has Lenovo done enough to push this nascent category forward and create one of the best laptops ? I had a chance to go hands on with the ThinkPad X1 Fold 2022, and it's definitely a step in the right direction.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold will be released in November with a starting price of $2,499. However, if you want to make the most of this foldable you'll want to get the even pricier $2,999 configuration. Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold design and durability

The new ThinkPad X1 Fold is big and small at the same time. Unfolded, it's a large 16.3-inch tablet. And in clamshell mode it's a 12-inch mini laptop. Fold it all up and you have a device that's just 2.8 pounds and 0.68 inches thick. It's not portable enough to put in your front pocket like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 , but the X1 Fold is remarkably compact given how much real estate you get when this thing is open. 

One welcome improvement is the new bell-shaped system hinge, which enables the larger OLED panel to be folded flat. The result is a thinner design overall. Make no mistake; this is a beefy convertible, but it feels solid and durable despite having over two hundred moving parts.

Don't expect much in the way of ports. There's two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a USB-C 3.2 Gen port and that's it. There's also a Nano-SIM card tray if you want to add 5G connectivity. 

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is designed to meet MIL-STD-810H standards for durability, including shock, vibration, high temperatures and more. We'll have to see how tough this device is in everyday use, but the point is that it meets the same standards as other ThinkPads.

The ThinkPad X1 Fold features a beautiful 16.3-inch OLED display that's rated for 600 nits of brightness and it supports Dolby Vision for supported content. Up close, this panel looks vibrant and colorful, and we appreciate the slimmer bezels on the new X1 Fold, even though they're still noticeable.

The crease on the ThinkPad X1 Fold is noticeable when it's in your hands, but it fades into the background when using the system in docked mode. if you want a really big screen vertically, portrait mode comes in handy for reading long documents, surfing the web and scrolling on social media sites.

With a device this versatile, it's good to know the many ways that the ThinkPad X1 Fold can be used. With the display open, you can use the 16-inch panel in landscape mode with the keyboard attached, which basically turns this foldable into a mini desktop. You can also rotate into portrait mode for when you need more vertical real estate.

The mode I'm most interested in trying on the go is laptop mode, which gives you a 12-inch clamshell. If you don't want to type on the touchscreen, you can attach the optional keyboard, complete with TrackPoint.

Other modes include book mode for reading (with the screen partially folded) and tablet mode, which puts this big screen in your hands and is best for when you want to use the optional pen.

Other than the larger display, the biggest change for the ThinkPad X1 Fold is that it packs a 12th gen Intel Core i5 or Core i7 chip. This is not the same watered down Lakefield chip that powered the previous X1 Fold.

So you should expect the same U-series level of performance that you'd get from other premium ultraportable laptops. You also get 8GB of RAM to start and 256GB of storage, though you can upgrade to up to 32GB of RAM and 1TB of PCIe SSD storage.

We'll have to see how well the X1 Fold performs in our testing, but it definitely has the potential to be your only PC. And it should be at this price.

When it's time for video calls, the ThinkPad X1 Fold features a 5MP RGB+IR camera. Plus there's an Intel Visual Sensing Controller option, which is an AI chip that can automatically recognize the user and to wake up the system and log you in without even touching the device.

Other features include onlooker detection, which notifies you if someone is looking over your shoulder, and walk-away lock for preventing unwanted access to your data. 

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold battery and charging

The ThinkPad X1 Fold comes with a 48 Whr battery standard, which is smaller than the previous model's 50 Whr battery. But you can gain another 16 Whr if you spring for the optional additional battery, though this will make for a heavier device.

The first X1 Fold lasted just over 6 hours on our web surfing battery test, so we would definitely look into the second battery for the new X1 Fold. 

Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold outlook

The ThinkPad X1 Fold is improved in almost every way, but I'm still having a hard time figuring out who this device is for. It's a bit too small as a clamshell laptop at 12 inches and it's not big enough when it's back at your desk at 16 inches. So you have to be someone who really wants a foldable screen laptop and the versatility that brings with it.

All the enhancements here look good, including the full-size keyboard, the faster processor and the thinner bezels. And I definitely want to try this foldable screen laptop for myself. But at $2,499 — and $3,000 for the keyboard and pen — this seems like a tough sell even for brave early adopters.

Performance cars are nice and all, but crossovers bring home the bacon. BMW knows that better than anyone considering its vast X lineup, which is about to grow furthermore with the range-topping XM coming late this year. At the other end of the spectrum, the X1 just switched to the third generation, bringing with it the first-ever iX1 electric variant.

We’ve extensively covered the new compact crossover (codenamed U11), but who is more qualified to do it if not BMW? The latest episode of its new “ All you need to know ” series on YouTube puts the spotlight on the gasoline-fueled xDrive23i, the plug-in hybrid xDrive30, and the zero-emissions iX1 xDrive30.

The entry point into the X family has all the ingredients to become a huge seller, especially since it eschews the polarizing look of other recent models. Of course, it’s also the cheapest BMW crossover money can buy, and can be configured in a multitude of ways. The official video shows one of the new colors – and already a personal favorite – debuting with the X1, Utah Orange.

Yes, the kidney grille is on the large side, but we all know it could’ve been even bigger. BMW has played it safe with the headlight design by retaining the one-piece clusters without separating the daytime running lights. For the first time on the X1 , customers can order the crossover with 20-inch wheels to further accentuate its more mature appearance.

Traditionalists would argue the interior shouldn’t have been changed so drastically as incorporating the climate controls into the touchscreen won’t be appreciated by everyone. Still, we have to admit the minimalist dashboard looks sleek, even though the side-by-side screens of the iDrive 8 do stick out quite a bit. With automakers obsessed to go digital, don’t expect physical buttons and knobs to come back in the foreseeable future, if ever. Lest we forget it’s also cheaper for a car manufacturer to delete those controls and put them into the infotainment.

BMW will have the 2023 X1 on sale this October, with US pricing  for the sole xDrive28i model kicking off at $38,600 (plus $995 destination).
