Call for Applications: CARTA PhD Fellowships 2025

The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) invites applications for its prestigious PhD Fellowships for the year 2025. CARTA is a collaborative initiative involving eight African universities, four African research institutes, and eight non-African partners. Our mission is to bolster the capacity of African institutions to conduct globally competitive research, with a particular focus on addressing health and development challenges in the region.

CARTA PhD Fellowship

As part of its innovations, CARTA offers a collaborative doctoral training program in public and population health. This program has been developed in response to the great challenges faced by Africa’s institutions of higher education in addressing the training and retention of the next generation of academics in the region. Specifically, CARTA seeks to fund candidates who will be future leaders in their institutions. That is, young, capable, and committed individuals who, in time, will ensure that their universities will be the institutions of choice for future generations of academics and university administrators wishing to make a positive impact on public and population health in Africa.

The multi-disciplinary CARTA PhD fellowship is open to staff members of participating institutions who are interested in conducting their PhD research on topics relevant to the broad fields of public and population health. We welcome applications from any discipline, such as public health, demography, anthropology, communication, and economics, among others, as long as the research question aims to contribute to public and population health issues in Africa. CARTA is committed to gender equity in access to the training programs and governance structure and implements a series of interventions to support the progress of women in academia (see CARTA’s gender position ). Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. 

Successful applicants will attend CARTA’s innovative series of Joint Advanced Seminars (JASES) for cohorts of doctoral students admitted and registered in the participating African universities. Both the development and delivery of these courses are jointly led by regional and international experts. The seminars include didactic sessions, discussions, demonstrations, and practice labs. These activities collectively serve to: 

• Expose students to key theories and concepts, seminal readings, and research methods of disciplines relevant to public and population health; 
• Train students in critical research skills; and 
• Build and maintain a network of researchers for scientific collaborations, professional support, and mutually beneficial exchange of scientific resources.

JASes are offered once annually for four years to each cohort and build skills and conceptual depth from year to year. Each JAS runs for 3 to 4 weeks. Specific topics covered in each JAS include the following: 

• JAS-1 (March 2025) builds critical thinking, technical skills, and other core research competencies, and introduces  students to the essential concepts and seminal articles of the disciplines brought together under CARTA 
• JAS-2   (November 2025)  focuses on data management and analysis. Fellows learn to use software packages for qualitative and quantitative data management and analyses. Practice sessions use real research data and current software packages for hands-on training 
• JAS-3   (August 2027)  focuses on data presentation, the doctoral dissertation, and scientific writing and communication skills to facilitate results dissemination and policy engagement 
• JAS-4   (March 2028)  addresses professional development including skills necessary to manage and teach large class sizes, raise and manage research funds, grant writing, and research management.

In 2025, the CARTA program plans to offer up to 15 PhD fellowships and two additional fellowships reserved for staff members of the Somali National University (SNU), Somalia, who will be mentored by one of the CARTA partners, Makerere University, Uganda. The fellowships, which are tenable at the CARTA African universities, include the following benefits:

• The cost of the fellow’s participation in the advanced seminars; 
• A modest monthly stipend; moderate support for research activities; 
• A laptop loaded with relevant software;
• Funds to attend one international conference; and 
• Support to participate in training programs of choice. 

Note : The CARTA fellowships run for a maximum of four years. Fellowships will only cover tuition fees, medical insurance, and travel support for fellows registered at a partner institution different from their own.

Respective African partner institutions need to commit to continue paying fellows’ salaries (or equivalent) as faculty members and to modify their workloads for the fellows, to enable them to fully participate in CARTA-organized activities pertaining to their PhD program and also to concentrate on their PhD studies. The partner institutions will also need to commit to waive the fellows’ fees if they are registered at the institution where they are employed. Fellows are encouraged to seek supplemental funding to cover additional costs of their doctoral program.

Eligibility

• A Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Prior admission into a PhD program is not required for application but awards are contingent on such admission being obtained at one of the participating African universities.
• Applicants for this program  must be full-time teaching or research staff at one of the participating African institutions  and should be committed to contributing towards building capacity at their institutions.
• Applicant’s PhD research proposal must be related to public and population health.
• Fellowships are only open to individuals who have not yet registered for a PhD or are in the very early stages (first year) of the PhD program and are yet to define their research proposal. Fellows seeking support to complete a PhD or secure an additional PhD are not eligible to apply.
• Applicants must commit to participation in all four annual residential Joint Advanced Seminars (JASes), and to engage in inter-seminar activities designed to keep fellows actively engaged and in continual communication with peers and mentors.
• Male applicants must be under the age of 40 years and female applicants under the age 45 years.

• Contact the CARTA focal person at your institution to discuss your interest and obtain application materials. Application forms may also be downloaded below .
• At this point, applicants are expected to submit their application forms and reference letters by April 15, 2024, to the Focal Persons at partner institutions WITH A COPY TO THE SECRETARIAT ( [email protected] ) . You can access the application here.  
• CARTA partner institutions will nominate candidates who will be invited for the full application process. The institutional selection will take place between April 15 and May 15, 2024 . Institutions must submit a completed University CARTA PhD Fellowships Applications Screening Form by May 15, 2024 .
• Only those who are nominated by their institutions will be invited to submit a full application between June 1 and July 15, 2024 .

• A full research proposal
• Letter of support from their institution committing to modify the workloads for the fellows, to enable them to fully participate in CARTA-organized activities pertaining to their PhD program and to waive the fellows’ fees if they are registered at the institution where they are employed.

• Understanding plagiarism course 
• Basic Health Research Ethics course 

b. Applications will be accepted ONLY through the official portal. Nominated candidates need to make sure to receive an official ID to log in and submit within the time stipulated by the system. No late or incomplete application will be considered under any circumstance.

5. Final fellowship decision, which is independent of the university nomination, will be communicated by the CARTA Secretariat by  November 1, 2024 .

HELB awards partial scholarships to Kenyans pursuing postgraduate programmes (Masters or PHD) in local Public or Private Universities recognized by the Commission for University Education [CUE]. The value of the scholarship award is Kshs. 200,000 and Kshs. 450,000 for Masters and PhD programmes respectively, tenable for 2 years in respect of the Master’s Programme and 3 years for the PhD.

Eligibility:

• Letter of Admission into a full or part time Postgraduate university program.
• Minimum undergraduate qualification of Second-Class Honors, Upper Division.
• Reporting for First year of study.
• Preference will be given to applicants undertaking Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Innovation and Fisheries [STEM IF] and those courses which will directly contribute to the “Big Four Agenda.”
• If the applicant is a previous or current HELB loan beneficiary, the applicant MUST be repaying his/her loan or has cleared the loan.

How to Apply:

• The applicant should register, access and duly complete the Postgraduate Scholarship Application (PGSA). The application is accessible through the  Student Portal .
• After filling the required application details, click and submit the duly completed application then download and print the PGSA.
• Proceed to have the PGSA duly signed and stamped by the relevant authorities and attach all the necessary documents as indicated in the checklist.
• Scan the filled PGSA and all the attachments in PDF format as one document.
• Send the scanned PDF copy to [email protected].
• Geographical distribution and gender are considered during the Scholarship Award.
• Applicants from marginalized regions are highly encouraged to apply.

1. DAAD in-country and in-region PHD program

These DAAD PhD scholarships are offered at the Regional Centre for Drought Adaptation (CERAAS) located in Senegal. CERAAS seeks to curb the challenges that result to low agricultural productions in drought stricken areas. It does this by providing technical solutions to mitigate the vice and assure quality food supply that results in improved standards of living for many.

Applicants should be from sub-Saharan countries, of which Kenya is part. DAAD, a German Academic Exchange Service, promotes academic exchanges at an international level, and co-operation to enhance education opportunities with developing countries by providing funding and opportunities for scholarships for interested students.

Details of the program:

• It includes both in-country scholarships, where students can pursue the PHD course in their own country, and in-region scholarships where students can pursue the same scholarship in another sub-Saharan country.
• The scholarship offers programs that are relevant to national development include Genetics, Genomics, Physiology, Agronomy, Plant Breeding, Agroforestry, and Plant Health.
• It offers two in-region and one in-country scholarship.
• The scholarship covers tuition fees, study and research allowance, a final allowance, a monthly scholarship which involves food and accommodation, and a travel allowance for those studying in-region.
• Scholarship holders are also highly encouraged to apply for an additional benefit which includes a 2 to 3 months research grant in Germany. This will come with scholarship payment for living costs, health/personal/accident liability insurance, and a flat-rate allowance for travel expenses. • The program does not discriminate and encourages female applicants, as well as those from less privileged regions and groups.

To apply for the DAAD scholarship, you should:

• Have a two-year university Master’s degree, having attained a second class upper grade or better.
• Prove to have a strong commitment to pursue the objectives of the course, and be a motivated individual.

• Have proof of being a national or be a permanent resident in any of the sub-Saharan countries (in this case, Kenya.)

3. Research Grants for Africans by Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA)

This program is aimed at supporting innovative projects and research, for those pursuing postdoctoral and PhD studies. The heart and stroke foundation aims at curbing disabilities and premature deaths in South Africa.

• Grants are awarded in the two broad focus areas of :
• Basic and applied biomedical and clinical research projects in relation to cardiovascular diseases (CVD).
• HSFSAs and health risk assessment project evaluation.
• Research focus areas include: cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease, HIV-linked CVD onset, risk factor modification and secondary prevention of CVD,
• Access to and quality of care for CVD in the public sector.

• Africans studying or working in South Africa under the supervision of an eligible personal instructor are eligible to apply.
• A research that is diverse and inclusive of females will be given a higher advantage.
• Masters level students can apply as long as they have a co-applicant researcher for the project.
• A one-page summary of the proposed study together with a brief budget should be submitted by the September deadline, and will be ranked. The highly ranked ones will be requested to submit a full proposal and detailed budget by the second deadline.
• The proposals undergo a full pee-review and the final grantees will be announced.

4. NRF/SA SKA MSc and PhD scholarships in South Africa

This is a project of the department of the national research foundation and the science and technology with a view of hosting the Square Kilometer Array Radio Telescope (SKA) and the design and construction of the Karoo Array Telescope (Meer KAT). It is meant to last up to the year 2025. The program is focused on supporting engineering and science students as well as postdoctoral fellows.

5. Agricultural PhDs for applicants in Africa, funded by AusAid, Australia

This scholarship is provided by the Australian government, with the scholarships being undertaken in Australia and the research in African countries. The Scholarships cover airfares, tuition fees, living allowance, medical cover, return airfare to Africa to carry out research, research costs contribution and yearly reunion airfares.

Application Requirements:

• A successful applicant is issued with a visa by the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). Applicants undergo a full medical examination.
• Must meet the minimum eligibility criteria for Australian Development Scholarships and tertiary institutions entry requirements such as an Australian recognized Masters degree.
• Demonstrate the ability to undertake independent research.
• Must be 50 years and below during application date.
• Females and disabled people are encouraged to apply.

6. DAAD-NAPRECA fellowship for post-graduate students in Kenya

The above is a 3 year PhD program (and 2 years for MSc) program is offered each year, and seeks to provide support to universities and research institutions in terms of development of staff. Those selected for the program pursue postgraduate studies to acquire PhD degrees in Chemistry, Biology, and related fields.

Eligibility requirements:

• Should be demonstrators or teaching assistants in universities or research institutions in NAPRECA member countries, apart from their home country.
• Have an MSc degree from a recognized university.
• Last degree must have been completed less than 6 years ago.
• Provide proof of admission to the desired degree course or have an official letter assuring admission.
• Must be as staff member of a private or public university or one considered for teaching or research staff recruitment.

This scholarship is provided each year to develop effective scholars and leaders and prepare them for employment.

About the scholarship

• Scholarships are offered for development related studies.
• Students’ tuition fees and living expenses are catered for. The cost of travel is excluded.
• Funding is provided for the first two years of study and afterwards, the students should find alternative sources of income to continue with their studies.
• Applicants should make every effort to obtain funding from alternative sources, so that the amount requested from ISP is at a minimum. ISP should be considered a lender of last resort. Priority is given to students with alternative sourcing.

9. ILRI graduate fellowship in Kenya

The International Livestock Research Institute supports the development of risk maps for anthrax, and identifies drivers for the disease in Kenya. It is based in Nairobi, Kenya. A fellowship award is given in the field of Spatial Analysis of Anthrax Occurrence Patterns.

The scholarship includes a stipend covering expenses at the location of the project, and supervision will be done by the university or academic supervisor and an ILRI scientist.

Ecology of native and introduced natural enemies of Parthenium hysterophorus in East Africa

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology ( icipe ) is offering one PhD research project working on ‘ Ecology of native and introduced natural enemies of Parthenium hysterophorus in East Africa’ in the African Regional Postgraduate Programme in Insect Sciences (ARPPIS).

The PhD study is part of the project “Accelerating One Health interventions for tackling pandemics at source (ACCELERATE-ONE HEALTH)” granted to the International Centre of Insect Physiology Ecology ( icipe ) and funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).

Summary of the project

Parthenium hysterophorus , often known as the famine weed, is considered to be one of the most noxious land-based weeds with worldwide and One Health implications (Holm et al., 1997; Kaur et al., 2014; Strathie et al., 2021. It exhibits vigorous colonization in cultivated fields, pastures, roadsides, wastelands, and water courses. Parthenium semiochemicals, such as parthenin, hysterin, hymenin, and ambrosin, have potent allelopathic properties on many plants. These compounds are recognized as inhibitors of germination and radicle formation in both dicot and monocot plants, resulting in a considerable reduction in crop output. Uncontrolled invasion of Parthenium weed in Ethiopia has been found to cause significant yield losses of 40-97% in sorghum grain. Parthenium weed is very hazardous to animals, leading to many health issues such as dermatitis, anorexia, pruritis, alopecia, diarrhoea, eye irritation, and contaminated milk. In fact, if cattle consume a feed containing a large quantity (10-15%) of this weed, it might result in their death. Parthenium pollen grains, dried plant parts, and roots in the air can cause a range of allergies in people, such as dermatitis, hay fever, asthma, and bronchitis. Researchers from icipe discovered that mosquitoes utilize Parthenium weed as a source of sugar for eating and store a significant amount of energy when they feed on this plant (Nyasembe et al., 2015). Further research has demonstrated that the larvicidal activity against mosquitoes can be enhanced by introducing hydroxyl groups to parthenin through structural modification (Milugo et al., 2021).

Traditionally, manual weeding and application of herbicides have been used for its management. However, these approaches are neither effective nor sustainable as it is beyond the reach of many farmers. Furthermore, each plant produces 10,000 – 25,000 seeds in its lifetime which remain viable in the soil, as seed banks up to 10 years, making management a daunting venture. The use of natural enemies has been demonstrated as the most effective, environmentally friendly, and self-sustaining, in the management of this weed in its native and invaded ranges. For example, in South Africa, Parthenium is being effectively controlled through the introduction of three insect natural enemies from Mexico: the stem-boring weevil, Listronotus setosipennis , the leaf-feeding beetle Zygogramma bicolorata , and the seed-feeding weevil Smircronyx lutulentus (Strathie et al., 2020). Despite the socioeconomic and health implications of this weed in East Africa, its classical biological control, still lags. In this regard, the proposed study seeks to document local natural enemies of Parthenium, introduce these natural enemies, evaluate their performance against Parthenium , study their bio- and chemo ecological interactions and subsequently undertake mass releases and monitor their impact.

Eligibility criteria

• Should be a national of an African country.
• Candidates should hold a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as agriculture/Entomology /Environmental Conservation.
• M.Sc. in Entomology/Agriculture.
• Previous experience in classical biological control, invasive weed management and molecular biology research will be an added advantage.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to articulate research findings, prepare detailed reports.
• Willingness to commit full-time to his/her PhD training programme.
• The Master’s degree must have been completed less than six years ago at the time of application.
• Candidates who are staff members of a public university, or considered for university teaching or research staff recruitment, are encouraged to apply.
• Qualified female candidates and candidates from less privileged regions or groups as well as candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.

The scholarship is fully funded for 3 years, during which the student will conduct fieldwork in Kenya.  

PhD project duration, supervision, and costs

• The duration of the Ph.D. project is for (3) years.
•   The students will be jointly supervised by the university professors and icipe scientists.
• The fellowship includes a stipend of US$700 per month, university fees, visa costs, office costs, and research costs.

The project focuses on Chemistry, Biology and Information Technology, with emphasis on conversion of organic waste to valuable bioproducts for transitioning into environmental sustainable and socially inclusive economies.

Scholarship Period

INTERACT-Africa is offering 28 postgraduate scholarships for the degree seeking mobility. 5 scholarships for the PhD and 23 for Masters programmes.

• For PhD students, the maximum duration of a scholarship is 36 months.
• For MSc students, the maximum duration of a scholarship is 24 months.

Eligibility criteria

• The candidate must meet minimum requirement for admission into Masters and PhD programmes as stipulated by the host University Senate/regulating body.
• Provide proof that the candidate is a national of and residence of an eligible country.
• Student beneficiaries must be of African nationality and residing in Africa at the time of application.
• All interested candidates must submit a research concept paper in the intended area of study (1 page, Times New Roman, single spacing).
• Applicants will not be allowed to participate in the mobility without an admission letter from the host university.
• Applicants to declare not to have already benefited from a previous student scholarship under the projects selected in the framework of the Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme 2022-2027.
• Applicants to commit not to benefit from another EU funded scholarship scheme to implement the same activity during their Intra-Africa mobility period.
• Provide motivation letter reflecting innovative technologies in climate change and mitigation.
• Recommendation letters and/ reference letters (two). One from an academic advisor or professor/lecturer.
• Applicant must be willing to study not in his/her country but within the eligible countries

Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to talented individuals with the potential to make a positive impact on the global stage.

As part of the UK’s ongoing commitment to the Commonwealth, each year around 700 students are given the chance to undertake postgraduate degrees with UK universities.

If you are from a Commonwealth country and believe you could make a difference to the world but you can’t afford to fund your UK studies on your own, then you could be the ideal candidate for a Commonwealth Scholarship.

What is the Commonwealth Scholarship? 

Commonwealth Scholarships are aimed at students from across the Commonwealth who would not otherwise be able to afford to study in the UK. By funding postgraduate studies in a range of different study formats, the scheme helps to support future innovators and leaders.

This historic award is the UK’s primary scholarship scheme focused on contributing to the UK’s international development aims. It is designed to attract outstanding talent to UK universities whilst supporting sustainable development overseas.

Who can apply?

To apply for a Commonwealth Scholarship, you must be a citizen or permanent resident of a Commonwealth country. You will still be eligible if you are a refugee or British protected person.

You need to have an undergraduate honours degree of at least upper second class (2:1). If you wish to study a PhD, you will need an appropriate master’s degree too.

Finally, you must be unable to afford to study in the UK without the scholarship.

Saint Michael’s celebrates three Fulbright winners

Three students from Saint Michael’s were selected as Fulbright winners for the 2024-25 academic year and will all depart in January 2025 for their selected countries. All three will be working as English Teaching Assistants.

Abdimalik Hashi M’24, who is graduating from Saint Michael’s MATESOL program, will be in Kenya; Carson O’Neil ’23 will be in Costa Rica; and Willow Schaefer ’24 will be in South Korea.

Last year, Saint Michael’s was recognized by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for being one of the colleges and universities with the highest number of students selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program. This was the second time Saint Michael’s was recognized as a Fulbright Top Producing Institution.

Patricia Siplon, Professor of Political Science and International Relations, Director of Public Health, and Director for undergraduate and post-graduate fellowships at Saint Michael’s, supports applicants to the Fulbright program at Saint Michael’s and said each of this year’s three winners has a unique story to tell. Siplon said she is “looking forward to continuing the work to propel our campus into having a thriving and full-scale Fulbright culture.”

Abdimalik Hashi M’24, Kenya

Abdimalik Hashi M’24 is graduating from Saint Michael’s MATESOL program and won a Fulbright scholarship to travel to Kenya. Last year, he was president of the MLK Jr. Society at Saint Michael’s. He is also a logistics officer in the U.S. Army and drives for Uber for fun. He said he loves learning from others.

“In my own journey, I had a lot of great teachers,” Hashi said. “When we think about English and teaching, it’s usually the biggest gap that stops people from going to college.”

Hashi said Siplon encouraged him to apply for a Fulbright scholarship during an International Coffee Hour meetup. He only had a couple of weeks to complete his application.

Hashi was born in Kenya and moved to the United States when he was eight with his mom and two sisters. He grew up in Greeley, Colorado, and went to college in Minnesota where his family later moved.

“My mom always wanted to transition into another country where we would have more opportunities,” Hashi said.

Hashi said he hasn’t been back to Kenya since 2006, but his mom has since retired in Kenya. He’s looking forward to seeing his mom and additional family members when he has time off from his English Teaching Assistant position.

He credits Saint Michael’s Center for Student Diversity, Empowerment, and Community (DEC), its Director Sarah Childs and Assistant Director Choeden Lama, for helping him win a Fulbright, as well as the MATESOL Department, the Edmundites, and Siplon.

“There is a significant amount of people in specific departments that go the extra mile for so many students and I feel tremendously grateful for them,” Hashi said.

He moved to Vermont in summer 2021 and joined the Vermont National Guard.

“I find a sense of meaning in having a leadership role, listening to people, and doing the fundamental things that leaders are supposed to do, which is solve problems so that others can thrive at what they do,” he said.

Through his MATESOL program at Saint Michael’s, Hashi has had the opportunity to visit schools in Burlington to observe different grade levels.

“For me, I really want to be an educator here in Vermont,” Hashi said. “One of the things I’ve noticed is diversity is a priority, but recruitment is not at its peak.”

Hashi said he would like to return to Vermont after his Fulbright to teach at Winooski or Burlington High School and has his sights set on becoming a principal one day.

“My main drive is to be in a classroom and be the person that students can see themselves in, regardless of their background, and give them the tools they need and reinforce it in their head that anything they want to achieve, they can,” Hashi said.

Hashi said he had a middle school teacher and two high school teachers who were that person for him. They fundamentally changed his life. In college, at Saint John’s University in Minnesota, he had a professor from Brazil.

“That was the first time I saw myself thinking about more education when I saw someone like him,” Hashi said. “Most of my professors were white. There’s nothing wrong with that, but there’s this feeling you get when they tell you, ‘Abdi, you have so much potential.’ It doesn’t feel like they can understand the obstacles or the things that naturally come with the Black experience in America. But when [my college professor] told me, and he told me about his experience, there are a lot of things that resonated. That’s what really drew me to education. It was not only representation but making sure that everyone has it in their ear that their goals can be achieved and showing them that its possible.”

He thinks Saint Michael’s would benefit from offering an anonymous survey to all students to rate every single facet of the College, beyond the classroom rating of their professors, to give a broader picture of the climate on campus and help implement change. This is the type of foundation Hashi says he is building on as an educator himself. As a teacher, Hashi said he wants to focus on Black joy, Black future, and bringing more diverse excellence to his community.

Carson O’Neil ’23, Costa Rica

Carson O’Neil ’23 won a Fulbright scholarship to Costa Rica where he will be an English Teaching Assistant in 2025. He plans to pursue conservation work in his off-time and create a travel vlog while there. O’Neil grew up in Keene, New Hampshire, and was a double major at Saint Michael’s in Public Health and French and a triple minor in Business Administration, Health Equity and Global Health.

“In Costa Rica, the sense of community is so strong,” O’Neil said. He recalled the constant stream of horns beeping from locals saying “hi” to each other.

Each night at the sea turtle nursery, O’Neil’s group walked the beaches looking for turtle nests. On two occasions, he watched a female sea turtle walk from the ocean shore to lay her eggs in the beach brush. He vividly recalled watching in awe as the turtle used her back legs to dig a huge hole in the sand to lay her eggs. O’Neil and the other volunteers quickly caught the eggs and brought them back to the nursery.

In the nursery, the volunteers would dig a hole in the sand to replicate the nest. There, the eggs were protected from predators and poachers and could safely hatch. Once hatched, O’Neil helped release the sea turtles back into the ocean.

“It was the most incredible experience,” O’Neil recalled.

O’Neil said that life-changing experience motivated him to apply for a Fulbright scholarship in Costa Rica.

It was the second time he’d applied. The year before, he’d applied for a Fulbright scholarship in Argentina. O’Neil wasn’t selected but two of his friends were Fulbright winners. Natalia “Aisha” Navarrete ’23 and Alexyah Dethvongsa ’22, are currently abroad on Fulbright scholarships in Mexico and Thailand, respectively.

“I’ve been watching them in these two countries, and they are both having incredible times,” O’Neil said. “I wanted to apply again.”

O’Neil graduated from Saint Michael’s last year and immediately accepted a position in the College’s Office of Institutional Advancement as a Stewardship and Donor Relations Officer. He said his college experience working as a Saint Michael’s tour guide all four years prepared him well.

While completing his undergrad degree, he said he tried to take advantage of Saint Michael’s Center for Global Engagement. He was selected for a Freeman Foundation International Internship in South Korea the summer before his senior year, during which he worked in an after-school program geared towards first-generation Korean students. He also participated in a two-week trip to Japan through Saint Michael’s, and he served as co-president of the French Club, through which he helped plan trips each semester to Quebec.

“As a student [at Saint Michael’s] it’s almost difficult not to take a part of some type of global opportunity. There’s so many that they offer,” O’Neil said.

O’Neil’s idea to create vlogs during his Fulbright experience mirrors how he documented his experience as a student intern in South Korea by creating weekly YouTube vlogs .  He learned he had won the Fulbright scholarship while visiting a friend from St. Mike’s in Hawaii this spring.

“Honestly, I’m still in shock,” O’Neil said. “I’m beyond grateful for St. Mike’s. They have given me more opportunities than I could have imagined.”

Willow Schaefer ’24, South Korea

Willow Schaefer ’24 is a double major in Secondary Education and English and a minor in TESOL. Schaefer won a Fulbright Scholarship to be an English Teaching Assistant in South Korea beginning in January 2025. Schaefer grew up in Groton, Vermont, and said her love for South Korea traces back to age nine, when she started practicing the Korean Martial Art, Taekwondo.

Schaefer formed a close bond with her two Taekwondo instructors. They promised to accompany her to Korea to attend the World Taekwondo Federation Building. Unfortunately, both instructors passed away within a year of each other before the trio got to go.

“It was definitely one of the hardest moments of my life” Schaefer said. “They had become like father figures to me. They were two of the most important people in my life.”

From that point on, Schaefer said she promised herself that one day she would travel to South Korea to train at the World Taekwondo Federation Building in Kukkiwon.

Fast-forward more than a decade. Schaefer decided to apply for a Freeman Foundation Internship at the same time that she applied to study abroad in South Korea. She received both. In the summer of 2022, Schaefer traveled to South Korea as a TESOL intern, working as an English tutor at an elementary bilingual academy. The experience helped her learn the Korean language. Schaefer said she loved the experience working with children and, it turns out, the feelings were mutual.

“I was the most requested tutor by the end of my internship,” Schaefer said.

Schaefer had also been accepted to study abroad for spring semester at Korea University during her junior year. Most of her classes were taught in Korean, helping to strengthen her linguistics further. While she was there, she started a language exchange club called KULL (Korean University Language Learners) that continues today. Schaefer said the club’s Instagram and group chat each have more than 2,000 followers and the meetings draw hundreds of participants.

Schaefer said Siplon convinced her to apply for a Fulbright Scholarship when she returned from studying abroad. Schaefer said she made a plan for if she won the Fulbright Scholarship and another plan for if she didn’t, which included staying at Saint Michael’s to pursue a Master’s degree in TESOL. Schaefer will start her MATESOL this fall before heading to South Korea in January. After her Fulbright experience, she will return to campus to complete her degree.

As part of her Fulbright community impact goals, she hopes to bring a similar language exchange club to her new community in South Korea. She also wants to start a pen-pal program between her South Korean students and Vermont schools.

Schaefer said she was student-teaching when she received the news she had won the Fulbright Scholarship.

“I cried. I cried so much,” Schaefer said. “There were so many overwhelming feelings. It was so joyous.”

Schaefer said she immediately emailed Siplon, Professor Benjamin White who is the Director of MATESOL, and Mahmoud Arani, who is Professor of Applied Linguistics and the TESOL Minor Coordinator.

“I owe a lot of this to them,” Schaefer said. “I honestly still can’t believe it.”
