COVID-19 hit the travel industry hard. Business travel, one of the industry’s primary sources of revenue, came to an abrupt halt. On the leisure travel side, vacations and special events were put on hold, damaging the tourism sector as well.

While the travel and tourism industries are slowly starting to recover, the emergence of the Delta variant has slowed growth and created uncertainty around when business and leisure travel will return to pre-pandemic levels. Here’s what businesses need to know to make informed decisions about traveling for their employees and customers amid this changing landscape.

Business travel during COVID-19

After a challenging year and a half, there is cause for optimism in the business travel industry, with companies indicating a willingness to return their employees to the road—or air as the case may be. According to a recent report from The Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), over half of travel buyers and procurement professionals reported that their company’s travel spending increased “somewhat” to “a lot.” Additionally, participants reported a slight increase from the previous month in restarting domestic and international travel for business.

Despite the relative safety of air travel, companies are still being cautious. The survey found that only 40% of companies planned to restart domestic trips within the next one to three months, while a mere 18% of companies planned to restart international trips. Their caution is owed to concerns over the presence of COVID-19 variants. Among survey participants, 78% were “concerned” or “very concerned” about the effects of the delta variant, as well as the possibility of further variants, on the safety of business travel.

The economic impact of pandemic travel restrictions

Amid the pandemic, both domestic and international destinations have placed varying restrictions on travel. In addition to public health concerns, logistical factors like required COVID-19 testing and quarantine periods have significantly reduced where and how often people are traveling. Moreover, many airports and other transportation hubs have been operating with fewer staff, limiting both the efficiency of traveling and options for doing so. The reduction in both business travel and leisure travel cost the airline industry more than $100 billion in lost revenue in 2020, and estimates project a further loss of nearly $50 billion this year.

The loss in air travel has also negatively impacted the tourism sector. Reduced demand for travel has similarly reduced demand for hotels, restaurants and food service, local retail, entertainment, and events. In 2020, international tourism and its related sectors saw a loss of $2.4 trillion due to the effects of the pandemic.

Recovery in travel and tourism will largely depend on global vaccine distribution and the suppression of COVID-19 variants. According to the GBTA survey, approximately 1 in 5 participants reported their company required employees to be vaccinated before traveling domestically. With different countries and even states having their own set of restrictions and vaccination status guidelines, organizations may hold off on business travel until these requirements can be streamlined or more easily understood.

The impact of vaccine inequity on the tourism sector

While most developed countries have seen a successful vaccine rollout, many developing nations are still struggling with limited vaccine access and administration. Depending on the country, vaccination rates range from less than 1% to more than 60%.

As developing countries work to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 without the support of widespread vaccines, they continue to experience greater losses in the tourism sector. This is especially critical, as many less-developed countries are heavily reliant on tourism for jobs and economic growth.

Countries with higher vaccination rates, such as the United States and the United Kingdom, have experienced less severe losses in tourism and are likely to have a more swift recovery. Still, the U.S. tourism industry has taken a hit, with many businesses struggling to find enough workers to keep them open during seasonal tourist peaks.

The long-term outlook for travel and tourism

The “new normal” of a post-pandemic world is expected to have long-term impacts on the travel and tourism industries.

With respect to corporate travel, many businesses have capitalized on new technologies to conduct remote meetings and large-scale conferences. With this, the frequency of business travel is likely to decrease, though it is unlikely to be replaced by virtual meetings altogether.

On the leisure travel side, people will likely continue to explore their own backyards more frequently than pre-pandemic. The summer of 2020 saw an uptick in road trips across America, with people choosing destinations within driving distance and further away from crowded metropolitan cities.

Contactless technology has seen a rise in recent years, but it has become more widespread than ever amid the pandemic. According to a survey by the U.S. Travel Association , 41% of global transactions are currently carried out through contact-free means, and 74% of Americans plan to continue using touch-free tech even post-pandemic. Apps that allow for contactless check-ins, direct payments, and even mobile hotel keys are expected to increase in popularity over the next several years.

As countries look toward fiscal and public health recovery, business travel and leisure travel are also beginning to recover. However, it is unlikely that things will return to the way they were before COVID-19. Rather, businesses must adjust to the “new normal” of travel to stay competitive and best support their employees and customers.

Conduct a marketing review of what worked, what did not, what could be improved and what scope you have for new initiatives. You’ll most likely be amazed at how much you did accomplish in 2022!

Also, use your history to work out your numbers – month on month income, room occupancy, new vs returning – whatever figures are important to your unique tourism business. These figures will become a driving factor in what defines the success of your marketing in 2023.

Use this review to create in-house benchmark figures for crucial elements such as customer attraction, satisfaction and loyalty – whatever results you’d like to exceed.

  • What is the name of your product?

  • How will a small increase or decrease in price affect bookings and sales?
  • Are your customers price sensitive?
  • Can you undercut your competition without hurting your bottom line?
  • What discounts can you offer? Can you offer extra value that will allow you to charge more for the product?
  • Where do people look for products such as yours?
  • Who offers products similar to yours?
  • What distribution channels do you need, and how can you access them?
  • Do you need a sales force or intermediaries to help you sell?
  • Where are your competitors selling their products?
  • Can you reach your customers through traditional advertising channels such as TV, radio, press or outdoor advertising?
  • How can you promote your business to consumers online & using social media?
  • Are there certain times of the year when your customers are more likely to buy?
  • How do your competitors promote their products?
  • What ideas of your competitors can you use?
  • How can you promote your products differently than your competitors?

TIP: You can use the above questions to help you define your 4 P’s. Your answers in turn, will help you determine which direction to take in terms of marketing strategy and tactics.

Step 8 – Set your SMART Goals

Your marketing goals need to be tied into your overall business goals.

Examples might include:

  • Increase brand advocacy and awareness – growing the number of people who know about your tourism business.
  • Enhance market penetration – selling more to existing customers.
  • Increase lead acquisition – capturing details so you can remarket.
  • Market development – selling to new target markets.

However, you need to then go one step further and turn them into tourism SMART goals .

S – Specific M – Measurable A – Achievable R – Relevant T – Time-bound

Step 9 – Outline Your Strategies & Tactics

Now that your SMART goals for your tourism business are set, you can then create the strategies and tactics you will use to reach these goals.

Put simply, the strategy is HOW you will achieve your goal, and the tactic is the WHAT.

This forms the actionable steps of your marketing plan and the timing to put them into place.

Your strategies could be achieved by using any or all of the following:

  • Printed marketing collateral
  • Online & digital marketing
  • Social media
  • PPC advertising
  • Traditional media (press, radio, TV, outdoor)
  • Trade shows and events
  • Public relations
  • Email marketing
  • Referral campaigns and word-of-mouth
  • Lead generation

You may find it easiest to list your tourism SMART goals and then make bullet points of what strategies can support each goal, as well as what target audience you’ll reach.

From this, you can then expand into each tactic and explain the actions needed – for example, this could include your social media calendar or your content marketing plan.

Let’s take the first SMART goal in Step 8 – to achieve this, you may need to create regular content and post on social media. You may also wish to create a PPC campaign.

TIP: When creating your action plan for executing your strategies and tactics, make sure you include what metrics you will use to measure your success! If you don’t analyse your campaigns, you’re wasting your precious dollars.

Step 10 – Set Your Budget

In your business plan, you detailed the entire financial side of your business.

But in your marketing plan, stay focused strictly on marketing related activities.

How much do you plan to spend on marketing and promotion throughout the next year, and how much will the action items you listed above cost you?

And where will this money come from?

So, you’ve got an idea and you want to start a business —great! Before you do anything else, like seek funding or build out a team, you'll need to know how to write a business plan. This plan will serve as the foundation of your company while also giving investors and future employees a clear idea of your purpose.

Below, Lauren Cobello, Founder and CEO of Leverage with Media PR , gives her best advice on how to make a business plan for your company.

What is a business plan, and when do you need one?

According to Cobello, a business plan is a document that contains the mission of the business and a brief overview of it, as well as the objectives, strategies, and financial plans of the founder. A business plan comes into play very early on in the process of starting a company—more or less before you do anything else.

“You should start a company with a business plan in mind—especially if you plan to get funding for the company,” Cobello says. “You’re going to need it.”

Whether that funding comes from a loan, an investor, or crowdsourcing, a business plan is imperative to secure the capital, says the U.S. Small Business Administration . Anyone who’s considering giving you money is going to want to review your business plan before doing so. That means before you head into any meeting, make sure you have physical copies of your business plan to share.

Different types of business plans

The four main types of business plans are:

Startup Business Plans

Internal business plans, strategic business plans, one-page business plans.

Let's break down each one:

If you're wondering how to write a business plan for a startup, Cobello has advice for you. Startup business plans are the most common type, she says, and they are a critical tool for new business ventures that want funding. A startup is defined as a company that’s in its first stages of operations, founded by an entrepreneur who has a product or service idea.

Most startups begin with very little money, so they need a strong business plan to convince family, friends, banks, and/or venture capitalists to invest in the new company.

Internal business plans “are for internal use only,” says Cobello. This kind of document is not public-facing, only company-facing, and it contains an outline of the company’s business strategy, financial goals and budgets, and performance data.

Internal business plans aren’t used to secure funding, but rather to set goals and get everyone working there tracking towards them.

As the name implies, strategic business plans are geared more towards strategy and they include an assessment of the current business landscape, notes Jérôme Côté, a Business Advisor at BDC Advisory Services .

Unlike a traditional business plan, Cobello adds, strategic plans include a SWOT analysis (which stands for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) and an in-depth action plan for the next six to 12 months. Strategic plans are action-based and take into account the state of the company and the industry in which it exists.

Although a typical business plan falls between 15 to 30 pages, some companies opt for the much shorter One-Page Business Plan. A one-page business plan is a simplified version of the larger business plan, and it focuses on the problem your product or service is solving, the solution (your product), and your business model (how you’ll make money).

A one-page plan is hyper-direct and easy to read, making it an effective tool for businesses of all sizes, at any stage.

How to create a business plan in 7 steps

Every business plan is different, and the steps you take to complete yours will depend on what type and format you choose. That said, if you need a place to start and appreciate a roadmap, here’s what Cobello recommends:

1. Conduct your research

Before writing your business plan, you’ll want to do a thorough investigation of what’s out there. Who will be the competitors for your product or service? Who is included in the target market? What industry trends are you capitalizing on, or rebuking? You want to figure out where you sit in the market and what your company’s value propositions are. What makes you different—and better?

2. Define your purpose for the business plan

The purpose of your business plan will determine which kind of plan you choose to create. Are you trying to drum up funding, or get the company employees focused on specific goals? (For the former, you’d want a startup business plan, while an internal plan would satisfy the latter.) Also, consider your audience. An investment firm that sees hundreds of potential business plans a day may prefer to see a one-pager upfront and, if they’re interested, a longer plan later.

3. Write your company description

Every business plan needs a company description—aka a summary of the company’s purpose, what they do/offer, and what makes it unique. Company descriptions should be clear and concise, avoiding the use of jargon, Cobello says. Ideally, descriptions should be a few paragraphs at most.

4. Explain and show how the company will make money

A business plan should be centered around the company’s goals, and it should clearly explain how the company will generate revenue. To do this, Cobello recommends using actual numbers and details, as opposed to just projections.

For instance, if the company is already making money, show how much and at what cost (e.g. what was the net profit). If it hasn’t generated revenue yet, outline the plan for how it will—including what the product/service will cost to produce and how much it will cost the consumer.

5. Outline your marketing strategy

How will you promote the business? Through what channels will you be promoting it? How are you going to reach and appeal to your target market? The more specific and thorough you can be with your plans here, the better, Cobello says.

6. Explain how you’ll spend your funding

What will you do with the money you raise? What are the first steps you plan to take? As a founder, you want to instill confidence in your investors and show them that the instant you receive their money, you’ll be taking smart actions that grow the company.

7. Include supporting documents

Creating a business plan is in some ways akin to building a legal case, but for your business. “You want to tell a story, and to be as thorough as possible, while keeping your plan succinct, clear, interesting, and visually appealing,” Cobello says. “Supporting documents could include financial projects, a competitive analysis of the market you’re entering into, and even any licenses, patents, or permits you’ve secured.”

A business plan is an individualized document—it’s ultimately up to you what information to include and what story you tell. But above all, Cobello says, your business plan should have a clear focus and goal in mind, because everything else will build off this cornerstone.

“Many people don’t realize how important business plans are for the health of their company,” she says. “Set aside time to make this a priority for your business, and make sure to keep it updated as you grow.”

As academics specializing in the travel, tourism and hospitality (TTH) industry, we have trained and advised dozens of companies in their journey towards sustainable businesses. There is so much more to sustainable travel & tourism than the generic statements you see on brand websites - which are invarably an attempt to greenwash.

TTH firms are accountable and must take the changes taking place seriously, from Greta Thunberg's movement to new priorities in the World Economic Forum´s agenda or the ever-growing list of world moguls taking on a leading role in the fight against climate change. For that reason, we have identified 10 sustainable tourism trends that will influence business strategies right now and the best practices that can be implemented.

Each trend is an opportunity for TTH firms to provide servi ces that align with consumer values, the Sustainability Development Goals agreed by the Member States of the United Nations as part of the Agenda for Sustainable Development in 2030, and the triple-bottom line accounting framework to evaluate business value in a broader perspective that includes social, environmental and financial outcomes.

What is Sustainable Travel & Tourism?

The definition provided by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), depicts sustainable travel and tourism as follows:

“Tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities.”

Sustainable travel entails embracing practices that aim to minimize the adverse impacts and maximize the positive effects of tourism, promoting responsible and eco-conscious exploration.

10 Sustainable Tourism Practices

So let's take a look at 10 practices and trends that hospitality and tourim businesses can start to implement today in order to take care of the planet.

#1 - The time for isolated green initiatives is over

Green-washing is ever less acceptable . Current challenges demand a comprehensive sustainable business model—one which places sustainability at the core of your corporate strategy, business practices and operations.

The bottom line: Come out with a new way of doing business, one that cares and walks the talk.

Building a sustainable business strategy won’t be quick or easy—but waiting is not an option.

#2 - Carbon emission compliance is no longer an option

TTH firms need to have a greenhouse gas inventory for their companies. Still today not many companies have one.

The bottom line: Compete for being better on the environment and talk about it –because it is the big trend (and will change social norms).

#3 - Implementing an ambitious emission plan pays off

Companies are accountable for reducing their emissions. Some can try a modest carbon-neutral way. A better objective is to reduce overall emissions by 5% each year.

Leading TTH companies should go all the way down the road just like Microsoft did in 2020 , when it stated that by 2030 “Microsoft will be carbon negative, and by 2050 Microsoft will remove from the environment all the carbon the company has emitted either directly or by electrical consumption since it was founded in 1975.”

The bottom line: Which TTH company will take up the torch and be the first carbon negative company

Offsetting, which has now become the preferred get-out clause, especially for the aviation sector, is no longer an option. It's cheap and focuses on forests, which are not a secure, long-term storage of carbon (see California or Australia). What we really need are sustainable fuels to power aviation in the future, this will never happen if everybody is just buying cheap offsets.

#4 - Data for action, not just analysis

The old saying you can´t manage what you can’t measure has never been more true. But how so

First, assess emissions and formulate a strategy to reduce footprint.

Second, set up a dashboard with key sustainability indicators.

Finally, be certain about your sustainability strengths when making prospective decisions: Can you foresee the impact of your next hotel opening ? Is your next merge with a travel operator sustainable, i.e., positive in long-term economic standards?

The bottom line: Measuring processes and managerial decisions is the way to solve the sustainability challenge and, by doing so, to keep stakeholders informed about it.

Scorecards are critical in sustainability assessment, implementation and forecasting. Just like the newest Bloomberg Green´s Data Dash Better data will lead the way to a sustainable future.

#5 - Less bottom-line operational mindset, circular economy and sustainable resource management

From theory to harsh reality . TTH firms are increasingly aware of the importance of managing world´s limited resources. It is time to reduce wasteful consumption of resources as much as possible by reusing all available resources and minimizing waste.

The bottom line: Actively promote the development of multi-stakeholder systems with suppliers, local community and customers.

Sustainable resource management means reduction, better planning and management of resources: single use plastic, green energy, electricity, water; textile, chemicals, raw materials to name just a few.

#6 - Food waste is not an option (if it ever was)

One resource that requires special attention is food. Food has cultural, social, symbolic and heritage significance. As research shows, the food waste challenge can and must be solved with management practices and innovations.

The bottom line: Food waste says it all: a shame for humankind and the planet.

Our latest research on food waste suggests that the introduction of different management innovations provides financial benefits in terms of cost savings, cost avoidance and revenue growth. Yet, professionals lack systematic implementation of waste reduction strategies.

#7 - Speed up business action by aligning with Sustainability Development Goals

Sustainability is not just climate change. Pay close attention to other UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and pledge to them. Several SDGs fall squarely into TTH companys’ core business principle: people service. For example, SDG8: decent work and economic growth.

Bottom line: TTH companies must pay attention to skilled labor shortage, exploitation of labor, irregular working hours, fight slavery and trafficking .

#8 - Be proactive with global environmental policy

Until recently, firms were compliant with local government regulations and policies. The road to sustainability has provided legitimacy to global players, such the UN Agenda 2030. TTH firms must get actively involved with these regulatory bodies and the new international global development agendas.

The bottom line: Collaborate with global players as they bet on more ambitious sustainability goals than local institutions.

Compliance was yesterday. Since ordinary politics has done such a poor job in proactively tackling sustainably, companies need to do whatever they can and more.

#9 - Put Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in your corporate agenda

Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria are the three central factors taken into account when measuring the sustainability and societal impact of investment in a company or business. All the largest private equity investment funds have pledged to the Sustainability Standards and Policies laid out by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation .

The bottom line: Hedge funds and private equity will prioritize investments in those companies that incorporate ESG provisions proactively.

#10 - Green-washing is never an option

It is time to answer those hard hitting, inconvenient questions: Inasmuch as airlines say otherwise, there is no sustainable cheap travel. Likewise, to this date, luxury accommodation and transportation are not sustainable businesses.

The bottom line: Customers are more educated than ever and are increasingly making wise decisions. The reputational damage of misleading customers will have serious implications for the future of TTH companies. Go back to trend #1 and step up your sustainability efforts in response!

Nearly 4.1 million Illinois residents are traveling over the Fourth of July holiday, AAA says.

Travelers can expect congested roads, crowded airports and extended travel times heading into Thursday’s Fourth of July holiday.


AAA projects travelers will set a record, with more than 4.1 million Illinoisans and nearly 70.9 million people nationwide expected to travel 50 miles or more between June 29, the start of the holiday travel period, and Sunday.

AAA also predicts that 60.6 million will drive, 5.7 million will fly and 4.6 million will use other means of travel.

O’Hare and Midway airports are expected to handle more than 1.75 million passengers between Wednesday, and Monday based on airline predictions. O’Hare is expected to see 1.43 million passengers and Midway up to 320,000 travelers — a 10.4% increase over last year.

“As one of the nation’s busiest airport systems, O’Hare and Midway International Airports are ready to welcome the many passengers coming to our City for the Fourth of July weekend,” said Jamie L. Rhee, who heads the Chicago Aviation Department. “The great employees at both airports, along with everyone at the [Aviation Department], will work tirelessly to ensure a safe, efficient and enjoyable holiday travel experience for our passengers.”

For those traveling by car, gas prices have risen slightly throughout the state. The new motor fuel tax that went into effect Monday increases the levy to 47 cents per gallon from 45 cents.

As of Tuesday, the average price of a gallon of regular unleaded gas in Illinois is $3.83, according to AAA’s gas prices tracker.

Traffic congestion will be a major concern for motorists traveling on the holiday, said Molly Hart, spokeswoman for the AAA-Auto Club Group.

“ We recommend that people leave extra early as congestion is likely to be heavy in the afternoon and evening hours,” Hart told the Sun-Times. “We want everyone to get to their destination safely, so be sure to have seatbelts on, no distracted driving and know where you’re going.

“If using a navigation system, program the destination before driving. Also, we urge all motorists to avoid driving while impaired by alcohol, marijuana or any other drug, choose a designated driver.”

INRIX, a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car on or before July 4 are between 2 and 7 p.m.

To beat the peak traffic, INRIX recommends that drivers begin their journey in the morning and, for travelers returning home Sunday to avoid rush-hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

Street closures are expected to start Thursday at 9 p.m. and Friday at 12:01 a.m. and continue into the weekend for the NASCAR Chicago Street Race .

What is the time zone?

Atlantic Standard Time. During the spring and summer months, we are on the same time as the U.S. East Coast. When the clocks fall back in the autumn and winter, USVI remains an hour ahead.

How can I stay in touch with news, work, and friends and family back home?

Radio stations, network affiliates, cable TV, satellite TV and internet providers keep you connected with the rest of the world. Internet cafes are conveniently located around the islands where you can socialize and check your inbox. If you travel with your cellphone, most carriers do have signals in the USVI. Remember your earpiece — it’s illegal to drive while speaking on your cellphone.

Do I need to bring an adapter for my electronics?

Standard 120-volt current is used in the U.S. Virgin Islands. No adapters are required.

Can I travel with my pet?

The islands are very pet friendly. However, only a few hotels allow pets, so check with your hotel beforehand. There are no quarantine regulations, but airlines do require a health certificate from your veterinarian (certifying that shots are up to date). Most certificates are issued for a 30-day period. If your travel will extend beyond a 30-day period, you should visit one of our local veterinary offices for recertification prior to departure.

Wave of summer travel expected over July Fourth holiday as hot inflation loosens grip

NEW YORK (AP) — Travel activity is expected to heat up to record levels around the Independence Day holiday as consumers take advantage of cooler prices for airfares, gasoline and hotels.

AAA expects a record number of people to hit roads and airports during the week between Saturday June 29 through Sunday, July 7. The motor club forecasts that roughly 70.9 million people are planning to travel, the most since before the pandemic.

The hot travel forecast comes amid broader worries that consumers are becoming more cautious on spending outside of necessities, which is a key factor to a cooling economy. Inflation has eased significantly from its peak in 2022, notably on costs for travel and vacations.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel.

The forecast, along with encouraging financial updates from cruise lines, bodes well for a sector that would typically suffer if consumers start cutting back on discretionary items and services.

Airports are seeing record numbers of travelers this summer. The Transportation Security Administration screened nearly 3 million people at U.S. airports June 23, an all-time high. The agency expects the number of air travelers to surpass 3 million at some point over the July 4 holiday week.

Consumers continue to face pressure from inflation on a wide range of goods, but travel-related items including airline tickets and hotel costs have eased significantly from a year ago. Hotel room prices were 1.2% lower in May compared with a year ago, according to recent government inflation data. Those costs have been trending lower since the beginning of the year.

Gasoline prices, which can have an outsized impact on consumer budgets, have generally eased from a year ago. Regular gasoline prices currently average $3.51 per gallon nationally, down 2 cents from a year ago, according to AAA.

Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Marriott, and Hilton will likely be the biggest beneficiaries of consumer demand for travel this summer, according to Morgan Stanley. Still, the “rising tide of demand should continue to lift all boats,” the report said.

Cruise lines are also poised to benefit. Carnival recently raised its profit forecast for the year and said bookings for 2024 are the best on record in terms of both price and occupancy. It said total customer deposits reached an all-time high of $8.3 billion during its fiscal second quarter and it expects capacity to grow 4.8% in 2024. Competitor Royal Caribbean has also raised its forecasts for the year.

Don't visit Oslo. That's what the city's new tongue-in-cheek marketing campaign declares.

VisitOSLO, the official marketing agency for Norway's capitol, debuted the ad last week. The video follows a 31-year-old resident named Halfdan, played by Bendik Aunan, who doesn't understand why anyone would want to visit Oslo.

"I mean, is it even a city?" he asks.

Halfdan takes audiences on a tour of Oslo while remaining thoroughly unimpressed by the city's walkability, quality of service, accessibility, and gorgeous landscapes.

Despite Halfdan's lukewarm feelings about his hometown, the ad has quickly amassed millions of views and sent Oslo to the top of travelers' bucket lists. Some people have praised the ad's dry and somewhat self-deprecating humor on social media.

Anne-Signe Fagereng, the agency's marketing manager, said in a press release that they knew using "typical Norwegian self-irony" would be risky, especially in a global market.

"Oslo has in recent years emerged as a truly exciting destination but is probably still a well-kept secret for many," she said.

She added: "The inspiration for the ad is Oslo's position as an underdog as far as city break destinations go – both in Europe and in the Nordics. However, Oslo has been through an incredibly positive transformation over the last few decades, so it's time our confidence in our capital catches up with reality."

VisitOslo's risk is exactly why it's resonating with audiences

Richie Karaburun , a clinical associate professor at NYU's Center of Hospitality and Tourism , said the ad's success lies in its authenticity and storytelling.

Unlike other tourism ads that show sun-kissed beaches and flashy attractions, VisitOslo's video prioritized the city's understated local charms with witty humor. Instead of unnamed glossy models, audiences meet Halfdan and his reluctant attitude.

"You need to create an emotional connection between your visitors and your destination. That resonates," he said.

Karaburun, who visited Oslo with his family last summer, added that travelers are craving that emotional connection when they book vacations. Some travelers have begun shunning traditional tourist traps for smaller, less crowded destinations that offer a glimpse into local communities.

Oslo could thrive with this type of traveler. The ad suggested so when Halfdan compares Oslo to Paris, Istanbul, and New York City.

"I think it is going to have a huge impact on Oslo's branding," Karaburun said of the ad. "Hopefully, it will impact the numbers because, at the end, it's all about the increased visitation numbers."

Karaburun said that if Oslo continues to attract travelers with unique ads, the city could emerge as a coveted destination.

"If they keep on doing these very creative destination marketing ads, I think they're on the right path to being well known like Istanbul, Paris, and New York."

High fuel costs and the threat of a hurricane are not expected to dampen Americans’ desire to hit the road, with vacationers preparing for record travel to kick off Fourth of July holiday festivities.

Motorist group AAA expects a record of almost 71 million people to travel around the United States Independence Day holiday, growth similar to a pre-pandemic trajectory.

Some 60 million people will drive with nearly 6 million flying to their destinations, while approximately 4.6 million people will take buses, trains or cruises during the holiday period, according to AAA’s forecast.

“We’ve never seen numbers like this,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said, “2024’s travel seems to be what 2020 would have been, had it not been for the pandemic.”

Travel during the summer months in the US will be closely watched from multiple fronts this year, as it could offer central bank officials and policymakers an important measure of consumer sentiment in an election year.

Inflation was unchanged in May even as consumer spending rose, boosting hopes that the US Federal Reserve might be able to control inflation while avoiding a recession.

Petrol prices have eased over the past few months, with the national average price for a gallon of motor fuel at $3.50 ($0.92 a litre) on Tuesday, a three-cent decline from last year. Domestic airfare is 2 percent cheaper than last year, with an average domestic round trip costing $800, according to AAA booking data.

‘Wanting to travel’

Despite recent declines, fuel prices remain well above historical levels. The average price for a gallon of petrol was $2.74 ($0.72 a litre) during the July Fourth week in 2019, and the weekly average price from 2015 through 2019 was less than $2.50 a gallon (0.66 a litre), according to US Energy Information Administration data.

Still, vacationers’ travel plans are largely unaffected by higher prices this year, according to a  survey of more than 1,000 people  by auto retail group American Trucks.

Four-week average US petrol demand hit a one-year high of 9.2 million barrels per day (bpd) last week as retailers stockpiled before the holiday, EIA data showed on Wednesday. Four-week average jet fuel demand was at 1.7 million bpd, identical to a seven-month high hit earlier in June.

“What we have noticed is that it’s more about the rate of change than the price itself that affects the psyche of consumers,” said John LaForge, head of real asset strategy at Wells Fargo Investment Institute.

Since the price of petrol has not moved dramatically higher or lower in the past six months, consumer psyche is largely unaffected by it, LaForge said.

For now, US vacation travel is unlikely to be affected by Hurricane Beryl, which has brought devastation to some Caribbean Islands since Monday, but is expected to weaken considerably as it reaches Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula by Thursday night.

US fuel inventories are also better stocked than they have been in recent years, providing motorists a buffer from sudden price shocks in case the hurricane disrupts refining operations.

“Americans are optimistic and wanting to travel, there’s no denying it,” GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan said.
