What you need to know about the 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccine recommendations

A new, updated coronavirus vaccine is on the way.

This week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved and granted emergency use authorization for updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccines. The vaccines come from makers such as Pfizer and Moderna. The new 2024-25 formula includes a monovalent (single) component designed to prevent severe illness from the recent Omicron variant KP.2 strain of SARS-CoV-2.

We talked to two experts at UC Davis Health: Stuart Cohen , the chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases, and Dean Blumberg , the chief of Pediatric Infectious Diseases. They answered common questions about the new COVID-19 vaccine, including when it will be available, who should get the vaccine and why.

How soon will the new shots be available?

Cohen: The FDA just approved the new formula and is debating when exactly to allow the release of the vaccines. The expectation is that they will be available within the next several weeks. This includes both the mRNA vaccines, like Pfizer and Moderna, and a bit later the more traditional protein vaccine (Novavax).

How is this COVID vaccine different than the one we had last year?

Cohen: SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID, continues to mutate. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the variant called KP.3.1.1 is the predominant strain of virus circulating now. It’s a strain related those known as the “FLiRT” variants .

So, the new vaccines will be targeting a different strain of the virus than last year’s vaccine. The mRNA vaccines will target the KP.2 strain, which was dominant in the spring. The protein vaccine (Novavax) will target the JN.1 strain. All three vaccines will be active against the current variants.

Blumberg: These new strains are as different from [the original] Omicron as Omicron was from the ancestral strain. They’re pretty far apart evolutionarily. The updated vaccine is a much better match for the currently circulating variant. That match is about 80 percent. We expect it to be much more effective.

What are the CDC recommendations for who should get the 2024 COVID vaccine?

Cohen: The CDC recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older receive an updated 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccine. The new vaccine will help protect against the potentially serious outcomes of COVID-19 this fall and winter. This is regardless of whether they have ever previously been vaccinated with a COVID-19 vaccine.

It is important to understand that even though the disease has become less severe, people who receive vaccines have a milder illness and a lower risk for long COVID than those who have not been vaccinated.

If someone previously had COVID, do they still need to get the vaccine?

Cohen: Yes, immunity wanes over time and the virus mutates. That is the reason the CDC made its recent recommendation.

Blumberg: If you’ve had COVID in the past three months, you’re likely protected. But the immunity seems to wear off after about three months. I do recommend waiting those three months before getting the vaccine, because that will prolong your time that you’re protected. For example, if you got COVID in August, then why not wait until November to get your updated vaccine? Then you’re protected for another four to six months through the winter.

Flu season will be here in a few months. Why should someone get the flu or COVID vaccine?

Cohen: There are several reasons to get the vaccines. Both COVID and influenza can be serious diseases, leading to hospitalization, long term symptoms and even death. Even though these vaccines do not fully prevent people from getting infected, they do decrease the risk that those infections will cause severe outcomes.

Data from the CDC continue to show the importance of vaccination to protect against severe outcomes of COVID-19 and flu, including hospitalization and death. In 2023, more than 916,300 people were hospitalized due to COVID-19 and more than 75,500 people died from COVID-19. During the 2023-24 flu season, more than 44,900 people are estimated to have died from flu complications.

Can someone get the COVID and flu vaccine on the same day?

Blumberg: You can get the influenza vaccine and COVID vaccine at the same time. You can get them simultaneously.

You can also get your COVID vaccine at the same time as you’re getting your vaccine for RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). Remember that RSV vaccines are recommended for those who are older and certain younger groups who are at more risk of severe disease.

Is the new vaccine safe?

Blumberg: The U.S. has a robust vaccine safety system. There is no question the benefits of vaccination far outweigh any adverse effects.

Kids often have mild symptoms. Do they still need a COVID vaccine?

Cohen: While illness is usually mild in children, it can be more severe on occasion. Children are also a chain in the transmission of SARs-CoV-2. The risk of the vaccine is less than the risk of the disease.

Is there any recommendation for which vaccine to get this year? Does it matter which one you had before — Pfizer or Moderna or Novavax?

Cohen: There is no clear preference. Most people have taken the mRNA vaccines, and they will be available sooner. But for the people who do not want an mRNA vaccine, waiting for Novavax is an option.

The fear from catching COVID and its impact seems to have subsided. As an infectious diseases expert, what would you like people to keep in mind?

Cohen: People continue to be hospitalized from COVID, and there were approximately 75,000 deaths last year. Everyone has COVID fatigue, but being smart about taking the right precautions will help determine whether someone will get severe disease. The vaccines have been proven safe and effective. When case numbers are high, use of a mask could be protective. The vaccine just furthers the protection by decreasing disease severity, if one does get infected.

Facility for Rare Isotope Beams

At michigan state university, user community focuses on the future of the field and fostering a diverse and equitable workforce.

The 2024 Low Energy Community Meeting (LECM) took place 7-9 August on the campus of the University of Tennessee Knoxville. LECM brings together members of the worldwide low-energy nuclear physics community to interact and discuss future plans, initiatives, and instruments. Over the course of the three days, 250 participants attended the meeting from 65 institutions and eight countries.

The LECM organizing committee includes representatives from FRIB, Argonne National Laboratory (ANL), the Association for Research at University Nuclear Accelerators (ARUNA), the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS), the Center for Nuclear Astrophysics across Messengers (CeNAM), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), the FRIB Theory Alliance (FRIB-TA), and the FRIB Users Organization Executive Committee. FRIB hosted the meeting last year, and ORNL hosted this year. Texas A&M University will host next year.

LECM included plenary sessions, four working group sessions, and four workshops: Modular Neutron Array (MoNA) collaboration, Fission studies with rare isotope beams, early careers, and public engagement. 

The LECM plenary sessions featured presentations from the FRIB Achievement Awards for Early Career Researchers; a presentation on diversity and inclusion; Kairos Power’s Hermes demonstration reactor; and comments from representatives from the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. The meeting highlighted the status at major user facilities—FRIB, ATLAS, and ARUNA.

The 2024 LECM affirmation and resolutions stated:

Affirmation: Our community affirms in the strongest possible terms its commitment to foster a diverse and equitable workforce and to support and respect diversity in all its forms. Individually and collectively we commit to ensuring an inclusive and accessible environment for all and taking action if these values are not being upheld.

Resolution 1: The highest priority for low-energy nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics research is to maintain U.S. world leadership in nuclear science by capitalizing on recent investments. To this end, we strongly support: 

• Robust theoretical and experimental research programs and the development and retention of a diverse and equitable workforce; 
• The optimal operation of the FRIB and ATLAS national user facilities;
• Investments in the ARUNA facilities, and key national laboratory facilities; 
• The FRIB Theory Alliance and all its initiatives.

All are critical to fully realize the scientific potential of the field and foster future breakthroughs.

Resolution 2: The science case for an energy upgrade of FRIB to 400 MeV/u is compelling. FRIB400 greatly expands the opportunities in the field. We strongly endorse starting the upgrade during the upcoming Long Range Plan period to harness its significant discovery potential. We support instrument developments, including the FDS and ISLA, now that GRETA and HRS are underway. These community devices are important to realize the full scope of scientific opportunities

Resolution 3: Computing is essential to advance all fields of nuclear science. We strongly support enhancing opportunities in computational nuclear science to accelerate discoveries and maintain U.S. leadership by: 

• Strengthening programs and partnerships to ensure the efficient utilization of new high-performance computing (HPC) hardware and new capabilities and approaches offered by artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) and quantum computing (QC); 
• Establishing programs that support the education, training of, and professional pathways for a diverse and multidisciplinary workforce with cross-disciplinary collaborations in HPC, AI/ML, and QC; 
• Expanding access to dedicated hardware and resources for HPC and new emerging computational technologies, as well as capacity computing essential for many research efforts.

Resolution 4: Research centers are important for low-energy nuclear science. They facilitate strong national and international communications and collaborations across disciplines and across theory and experiment. Interdisciplinary centers are particularly essential for nuclear astrophysics to seize new scientific opportunities in this area. We strongly endorse a nuclear astrophysics center that builds on the success of JINA, fulfills this vital role, and propels innovation in the multi-messenger era.

Resolution 5: Nuclear data play an essential role in all facets of nuclear science. Access to reliable, complete and up-to-date nuclear structure and reaction data is crucial for the fundamental nuclear physics research enterprise, as well as for the successes of applied missions in the areas of defense and security, nuclear energy, space exploration, isotope production, and medical applications. It is thus imperative to maintain an effective US role in the stewardship of nuclear data. 

• We endorse support for the compilation, evaluation, dissemination and preservation of nuclear data and efforts to build a diverse, equitable and inclusive workforce that maintains reliable and up-to-date nuclear databases through national and international partnerships. 
• We recommend prioritizing opportunities that enhance the prompt availability and quality of nuclear data and its utility for propelling scientific progress in nuclear structure, reactions and astrophysics and other fundamental physics research programs.
• We endorse identifying interagency-supported crosscutting opportunities for nuclear data with other programs, that enrich the utility of nuclear data in both science and society.

The community also presented a statement on isotopes and applications:

Applied Nuclear Science offers many tangible benefits to the United States and to the world. The Low Energy Nuclear Physics Community recognizes the societal importance of applied research, and strongly encourages support for this exciting and growing field with funding and beam time allocations that enable critical discovery science that will improve our lives and make us all safer.

Rare isotopes are necessary for research and innovation and must be available.

Unlike a PowerPoint presentation however, the term “multimedia presentation” is more commonly used in the business or corporate setting. Companies will use them in trade show displays, explainer videos that demonstrate how their product or services is best suited for their customer. All multimedia presentations however start off in the same manner as a PowerPoint does, a blank canvas or document that outlines what content (text, photos, ideas)  must be presented by the time the presentation has finished.

If you already have a Powerpoint presentation, congrats! You’ve saved yourself some time as the content is already there. The most important aspect at the beginning is determining which headlines are to be paired with which text, everything else is secondary. 

PowerPoint and other presentation software creators can give you many ideas for the flow of the video presentation but they lack the custom animations and “pop” that a multimedia presentation can benefit from.

Take for example, the series of presentation images above. These look great from a layout-perspective but typically what these “out-of-the-box” software options will do is only enable you to click and the image will appear (sure, maybe it’s a dissolve or flash animation but remember, everyone else is doing this as well).

If you or someone you know has access to the Adobe Creative Suite, I  highly recommend using this first and foremost. If not, Adobe After Effects will be powerful enough to get you up and running with animations, unique backgrounds and the best part is you can import all your own images. 

While this is not a tutorial on how to use After Effects, some of the nifty things you can do is animate your logo as the intro. This is one component of presentations that I often find people overlook. Having a solid intro (5-10 seconds max) can give your video presentation that “branded feel.” Attached here is one I created for REMAX Brokerage.

In a multimedia presentation, several components work together to convey the main topic and points. To help the end user better consume the message, components that are frequently found in a multimedia presentation are:

Even if you opt to present a multimedia presentation vs. a written report, it is beneficial to include at least some text. There can’t be any presentation whether simple or multimedia which doesn’t contain text, simply because audience members benefit from a diverse set of data inputs (i.e. audio, visual, kinetic). That is why the text is a basic component of multimedia presentation. However, text can take several forms in multimedia presentations such as headlines, features list, and more. It does not have to be paragraphs that can be daunting to read.

Images and Photos:

Images (whether your own or stock photos) can be a great benefit to the overall presentation. I believe the saying goes “a picture tells 1000 words…” while this is certainly true, keep in mind that all components of a multimedia or video presentation should be used to support the other elements. Too much of a good thing can be just that…too much.

Choosing images and videos for your multimedia presentation is only half the battle. You also need to make sure that these visuals are of high enough quality for your audience to be able to enjoy them. Image resolution is an important factor in multimedia presentations – using images or videos with low resolution can make them look blurry and low-quality, which can ruin the overall effect of your presentation.

Background music and vocal narration are two other elements that can help bring a presentation to life. Music can not only help an audience pay more attention to the overall presentation but give it a bit more “pop.”

Animated Icons within multimedia presentations typically render as video or GIF format . If you’re using a popular presentation software such as PowerPoint, dragging and dropping (or uploading) is one of the easiest ways to quickly add some dynamic movement. The most important aspect of a multimedia presentation is the message it’s trying to convey. It’s all too easy to get caught up in picking visuals and planning out slides, but without a clear message, your presentation won’t be effective.

Step #4: Add multimedia content.

At this stage, your presentation probably looks good-looking, but static. Let’s make it interactive by adding unique multimedia presentation tools.

Start adding multimedia content to the slides that need it. Follow your outline and visualization idea notes.

You don’t need to add a different type of media on each slide — that’s overwhelming. Aim for two or three types of media spread throughout the presentation to keep a balance.

• A narration can cover all the slides and it should flow seamlessly.
• Interactive slides with links to the main slide or other sections need to be well-organized and easy to navigate.
• Videos shouldn’t be on every slide. There needs to be breathing space between videos so it's not overwhelming.

• Embed content on any slide and make it fit visually with the rest of the content.

Step #5: Review, download and share.

How to Use Multimedia in PowerPoint PPT Presentations

Multimedia is helpful in presentations to keep your audience's attention. Here's how to add multimedia to your presentation:

Let's get started with a multimedia presentation example:

1. Images in PowerPoint: Stills & Animated

The first thing we want to do is add images to the PowerPoint template. This section explains how to add still and animated images:

How to Insert Images into PowerPoint

The simplest way to add an image to PowerPoint is to simply copy and paste. You can copy an image to your clipboard in practically any app like a web browser or image editor, and then right-click to paste it into PowerPoint.

A better way to insert images is to save them to your computer, then insert them using the  Insert  menu. Go to the  Insert > Pictures  menu to browse to an image to insert.

On the pop-up menu, browse to where your images are stored and click on them to add them to the presentation. 

Hold the  Control  button on your keyboard and click on multiple images before you press  Insert  to add them all to a slide.

Resize and Reposition Images

Once an image is on the slide, you can click and drag it to move it around on the slide. If the image is larger or smaller than you want, you can click and drag on the corner to resize it. 

PowerPoint Picture Tools

PowerPoint also includes a set of tools to edit images from within the app. You don't always have to open up Photoshop or another editor to make basic changes to your images. 

When you select an image, you'll see a new option on the PowerPoint ribbon. Click on the  Picture Tools > Format  to open up image editing tools.

Here are the key Picture Tools to try out:

• Cropping . Select the part of the image that you want to keep (and remove) to trim an image inside PowerPoint
• Remove background . If you've got a logo with a white or black background, use this wizard to isolate the logo.

2. Audio in PowerPoint

Once you've added your images to PowerPoint, it's time to add sound. This section explains how to use audio files in your multimedia presentation:

Add an Audio File to PowerPoint

Audio is another multimedia type you can work with in PowerPoint. 

If you've got an audio track on your computer like an MP3 or WAV file, you can easily add them to your presentation. Choose the  Insert > Audio > Audio on My PC  option to browse for and choose an audio file.

After you choose the audio file, you'll see a small speaker icon on your PowerPoint slide. You can hover over it and press the play button to play it while presenting.

If you don't already have your audio recorded in a file, you can actually capture it right inside of PowerPoint.

To record audio for the presentation, go to the  Insert > Audio > Record Audio  option.

Now, you'll see the  Record Sound  option pop up. Press the red Record button, and PowerPoint will start grabbing audio. When you're finished press the  Stop  button (black square) to add your audio to PowerPoint.

Working With PowerPoint's Audio Tools

PowerPoint lets you make minor edits and adjustments to audio files without having to open another app. With the audio file selected, the most useful options are found on the  Audio Tools > Playback menu.

Here are some of the most useful options:

• Trim Audio . Open this option to reduce your audio file to play only a selection of the original file.
• Start . Change from On Click  to  Automatically  to play the audio without clicking the speaker icon.

3. Video in PowerPoint

Video is a powerful multimedia type you can use. PowerPoint supports adding video from your computer or online. Let's look at how to insert and change them: 

Add a Clip From Your Computer

If you've got a video clip on your computer, you can quickly drop it into your presentation by using the Insert  menu. Go to  Insert > Video > This Device to browse to your video file.

Once the video is on your slide, you can drag the corners to resize it and control how much of the slide it covers.

PowerPoint has good support for most of the major video file types, like MP4, QuickTime, and Windows Media files.

Add a Video Clip from Online

Finding an inspiring or insightful YouTube video can help make drive your point to reach an audience. Instead of finding a workaround to download and convert a YouTube video, PowerPoint can link to and insert them directly.

To add a YouTube (or other online) video, go to  Insert > Video > Online Video  to launch the menu.

Now, PowerPoint shows a new window to search for or add an online video. If you want to add a YouTube video, you can drop in the URL for a video, or search directly inside this box for a relevant clip.

Other sites might give you embed codes on their site. On sites like Vimeo or TED, try out the Embed code and dropping the HTML into the bottom box.

Adding a YouTube video is a great way to include a video without increasing your PowerPoint file size. Instead of embedding the video inside the file, the link plays a YouTube video, right inside the presentation. For more detail, read through this quick tutorial: 

PowerPoint Video Playback Options

Just as PowerPoint has built-in tools to adjust images, the  Playback Options  are great to adjust how a video plays inside the presentation.

With the video selected, click on the Video Format tab.

Here are several key options to try out to change how the video plays:

• Start . Change this option from On Click to Automatically to start playing the video as soon as the slide appears.
• Play Full Screen . With this option turned on, playing the video will cut to a full-screen mode with the rest of the slide hidden.
• Trim Video . Open this option to select which parts of the video to reduce the video to the parts you want to show.
