In my thesis, I explored the work of the artist Kanye West as a rejected voice of Generation Y. Why was he rejected? Could he, in fact, be the voice? By examining readings of several of his songs and music videos over the span of his career as well as his public interactions, I attempt to properly place West in American culture. As a result of my research, I found West to be an extremely influential artist and an intriguing representation of the 2000s.

Revisiting Kanye’s ‘Runaway’ and how it resonates today

With his feature-length 2010 visual, the rapper established some of the themes he’d explore over the coming years – six years later, it feels more relevant than ever.

For  Kanye West , the realities of fame – and the pressure and scrutiny that comes with it – came to light this year in a very public way. After his hospitalisation for exhaustion following the cancellation of his Saint Pablo tour, one of his first public acts was to visit Donald Trump at Trump Tower . That was the cap on a very turbulent year that saw him release and constantly update his album The Life of Pablo , debut a new Yeezy Season show  to a mixed reception, get into a public feud with friend and partner Jay Z, incur the wrath of Taylor Swift’s mass fanbase, and, most shockingly, learn his wife was robbed at armed gunpoint.

However, Kanye has always been one to wear his emotions and his private life on his sleeve. As his popularity has grown, he’s primarily explored the superficial bubble that fame creates around individuals, with the themes of celebrity isolation and mental health referred to most prominently throughout The Life of Pablo . In 2010, he dropped My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy , an album more refined in sound and with a clearer artistic direction than anything he’d done before. The album’s themes vary from his post break-up woes with his ex-partner,  Amber Rose , to the perils of fame and the stress mounted on his shoulders as a result.

Runaway , the film he released to accompany the album, encompasses both of these themes, acting as both a catharsis and swansong for Yeezy’s past relationships. Six years since its release, the message he delivers resonates even more strongly.

We took a look back through the film – the genesis of Kanye’s belief that he could break out the restrictions that had been thrust upon him – and how it rings true with the man he is now.

THE LINE BETWEEN SELF-ESTEEM AND MATERIALISM

kanye_west_runaway_slice

Kanye recently described his former self as a “ backpack n***a with luxury taste buds ” in his ferocious “No More Parties in LA”, and the contrast between his indie/underground background and ‘luxury’ tastes has been a major theme throughout his work. The beginning of Runaway shows Kanye’s celebrity bravado, driving through the woods in his Lamborghini Murciélago, wearing shades and jewellery while “ Dark Fantasy ” plays, the lyrics ringing through: “ Fantasised about this back in Chicago / Mercy, mercy me, that Murcielago / That’s me, the first year that I blow.”

On Kanye’s early records, materialism and self-esteem are inextricably linked. “ The people highest up got the lowest self-esteem / The prettiest people do the ugliest things / For the road to riches and diamond rings, ” he raps on early cut “ Self Conscious ” (the lyrics were later reworked for “All Falls Down”), while on “ Through the Wire ” and “ Good Life ” he talks of how he’s deserving of fame and fortune. Kanye is in a constant battle with his authenticity as an artist and his desire for status. Vince Staples recently mirrored this concept in his track “Lift Me Up”, where he raps: “ Fight between my conscious and the skin that’s on my body / See I need to fight the power but I need that new Ferrari. ” Kanye feels he is owed a luxurious lifestyle for his work, but is aware also of the superficiality that comes with this.

During the scene he crashes the car, coming across the film’s other primary character: the bird. The bird acts as Kanye’s love interest; she’s beautiful and graceful in her appearance, and has birdlike wings and clawlike jewellery. The bird is Kanye’s opposite, fragile and scared of the world she has found herself in. When the bird is watching the news at ’Ye’s house, he tells her not to trust the media: “First rule in this world, baby, don’t pay attention to anything you see in the news.” In an interview with MTV , he described writing this line with director, screenwriter and collaborator Hype Williams. “Every day on the news there’s some new bullshit about me or about everything going on,” he said, “Once you’re on this side of the camera you’re like, ‘Aw man, none of this stuff is actually real.’” Kanye is giving us a taste of the lifestyle he leads while telling the bird to ignore the negative side of his celebrity.

CONCERN OVER RACIAL REPRESSION

In the film, Kanye takes the bird to what looks like a parade with a huge Michael Jackson  cast being wheeled through amidst fireworks and the effigies of a black and white angel. The scene is soundtracked by “ All of the Lights ”, a bass-driven banger that includes a mention of Jackson within its lyrics. While the parade seems like an homage to one of Kanye’s favourite musicians, Runaway was released only a year after Jackson died, revealing a dark undertone when men dressed in KKK hoods are shown to be leading the parade. The parade represents the power of white supremacy within culture, with Jackson wheeled along in mourning by the very people that opposed him and exploited him for his entertainment. Kanye and the bird don’t pay attention to this, too busy wrapped in the stardust or ‘lights’ of the event.

Kanye - runaway still

Kanye also uses the scene to explore the idea of ‘mental jails’. At the beginning of the scene a child runs through holding a torch which, according to Kanye speaking to MTV , “represents his thoughts and ideas”. By the end of the scene, the child has been cultivated in a Klansman hood, walking slowly holding the torch. West explained this, stating, “It’s the way society has set people up to be able to control them: slave mentalities.” The scene presents a theme Kanye has regularly spoken about with dissatisfaction  – the repression of his creativity and the restriction of his ideas by the media. Kanye is frequently described in the press as ‘crazy’ for both his ideas and his opinions, and it’s often followed up by the word ‘genius’ (a problematic concept in itself). To combat his ‘mental jail’ he often embraces this idea, as he announces with gusto on The Life of Pablo ’s “Feedback”: “ I can’t let these people play me / Name one genius that ain’t crazy. ” By breaking free of these mental jails, we’re able to tap into true creativity and create something revolutionary.

kanye west runaway film

The dinner party is all-white-themed, with the table and guests dressed up in their finest white clothing and the ballerina performers wearing black. The inspiration from this scene came from Vanessa Beecroft , an Italian artist and regular collaborator with Kanye, who later worked on his Yeezy Season shows. Her piece VB65  features a table of 20 African immigrants in suits eating chicken and drinking water without platters or silverware, in a scene parodying the last supper. Projecting this on to Kanye’s piece, the guests at the table are all black, while the entertainment and servants are white, with Kanye at the centre of the table. Kanye is attempting to shine a light on the contradiction of black wealth (seen later in his work with “ New Slaves ”: “ You see it’s broke n***a racism, that’s that ‘Don’t touch anything in the store’ / And this rich n***a racism, that’s that ‘Come in, please buy more ”).

THE STRUGGLE OF BEING IN THE PUBLIC EYE

Kanye and the bird enter the dinner party while “ Devil in a New Dress ” plays. It’s a braggadocious moment, Kanye showing off his girlfriend while decked out in the finest jewellery and clothing. All eyes turn to her as they enter. They begin eating and all is normal until Kanye is spoken to by another guest. “Your girlfriend is really beautiful… Do you know she’s a bird?” The guest tells him, “I mean, like, leave the monkey in the zoo.” Kanye is in love with someone who doesn’t belong in his circle of celebrity. This line evokes the overall message of the film – that the element of fame is what removes individuals of their character and morality. Kanye is too involved in his own situation to remove himself from it, and so rather than defending his love interest or leaving the party, he proceeds to perform the title track “ Runaway ”, a song riddled with the torment of loving someone while knowing you’re no good for them. In the film, Kanye refuses to break decorum for the sake of his girlfriend – but by this year’s “Freestyle 4” he’s drunkenly losing his inhibitions, talking about having sex in the middle of a “V ogue party ”, asking, “ Would we be the life of the whole party? ”

kan

The turning point for the bird comes when the main course arrives at the table. A bird is brought out to the table on a platter to eat. Kanye’s partner is horrified by the sight, unfolding her wings and screaming as the other guests flee. Kanye is left sitting at the table hanging his head. The bird brought out to the table is a metaphor for the consumption of women and the greed of the entertainment industry. The character of the bird is beneath these people and deemed good enough only to be consumed. The woman is depicted as a bird to highlight her hyper-femininity and her vulnerability within a male-dominated culture. Kanye has continued to invoke animal imagery when addressing the crippling nature of the media: in “ Wolves ”, for example, he speaks protectively of his daughter coming into a dangerous world for women in the entertainment industry (“ Cover Nori in lamb’s wool, we surrounded by the fuckin’ wolves ”).

kanye_west_runaway_wallpaper_3_by_lilthraven-d31ut

During a scenic moment towards the end of the film, the bird asks Kanye where he thinks statues come from. She claims they’re phoenixes turned to stone: “Do you know what I hate most about your world? Anything that is different you try to change. You try to tear it down. You rip the wings off the phoenix and they turn to stone. And if I don’t burn, I will turn to stone. If I don’t burn, I can’t go back to my world”.

These lines speak volumes of the world of celebrity Kanye has found himself in. The bird uses the analogy of a statue to represent the downfall of a person’s character after fame. To be famous is to be stripped of your freedom and individuality under a demand of decorum and carefully maintained appearances. A person’s character is torn down and ‘turned to stone’. To burn like a phoenix is to be born again and to be free. The bird is an innocent and free-thinking individual, but Kanye feels he can never be free like the phoenix. Kanye wakes up to find the bird gone, while “ Lost in the World ” plays as Kanye runs to find the bird flying away.

Both Runaway and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy marked an introspective turning point in Kanye’s career, where his attentions turned more towards his own catharsis. The project’s message of instability and pressure is definitely one that resonates today, with The Life of Pablo  tracks such as “FML” and “Real Friends” all alluding to the mental health issues brought on by fame. When an artist such as Yeezy reaches godly status in mainstream media, there are expectations placed on them to be unbreakable. This is the sum of the project’s message: after all the glitz, glamour and excess, how much of a person is lost and how much of their character stays intact?

I recently saw Kanye West’s film , Runaway .  It is a film about a phoenix falling to earth right in front of a driver and Kanye West taking her into his home. When he takes the phoenix in, he shows her a couple of things considered to be human, television, music, and drinking out of a cup. After a couple explosions, it cuts to a lunch party, where the phoenix sticks out dramatically and Kanye West breaks into song, and ballerinas come out and perform for the diners. The lunch is not going very well and it takes a turn for the worse when lunch is served and a turkey is brought out which resembles the phoenix and the phoenix breaks down and screams until the lunch party all leaves.

The film itself is very aesthetically pleasing, vivid colors, scenery and images capture one’s attention and keep them entertained throughout the film. There are frequent explosions which make the film somewhat beautiful, but unnecessary.

Although I enjoy Kanye West’s music, I would not consider myself a fan; this is why I feel as if I am able to write objectively on the subject. I feel as if Kanye West is trying to tell the audience that he has evolved. He has evolved from a rapper to an artist and an artist that will do what they feel they must do to be themselves. While the film was simply created to promote his newest album, it also promotes the message that the album is sending. The message that he is rising from the ashes to do what he wants to do, and if it is not accepted then he must runaway. It is an appeal to our ethos, because he is trying to appeal to our emotions to make us believe that he is back and better like a phoenix.

While the film is filled with many songs, there are only three different times when dialogue is present. The first, “first rule in this world baby, don’t pay attention to anything you see in the news.” This I feel is a clear opinion of his and is an attempt to tell his audience that not everything they hear about him is true and to not take everything they hear and believe it a hundred percent. The second time dialogue is present, Kanye West and the phoenix were at a lunch party and the person next to him turns and says “your girlfriend is very beautiful…did you know she’s a bird…keep the monkey in the zoo” I feel like this is an attempt to tell his audience that you will not always be accepted and you must not let it phase you. The third time dialogue is seen; the phoenix tells Kanye West “do you know what I hate most about your world? Anything that is different you try to change. You try to tear it down.” This is the most obvious metaphor in the film. This represents Kanye West’s belief that the world is trying to change him. The phoenix goes on “you rip the wings off the phoenix and they turn to stone, and if I don’t burn, I will turn to stone, if I don’t burn I can’t go back to my world.” By saying this, Kanye West is saying that if you take away his “feathers” he is just a stone statue, unable to do anything. He must “burn” or express himself, and that if society does not let him “burn” and express himself, he must return to his world and perhaps stop making music.

The whole metaphor of Kanye West as a phoenix is a bit of a turn off, since he is comparing himself to a mythical creature, it can be seen as cocky and in bad taste. Personally I like to be able to relate to my favorite artists, and when Kanye West represents himself as a phoenix I feel like I could never relate, and therefore would not listen to his music or buy his album. This could be seen as a whole in Kanye’s logos.

Kanye West’s purpose for this video was to show how he has evolved from a rapper to an artist. If Kanye West’s purpose was to tell the world that he is not changing and he is coming back, than the metaphor was extremely successful and obvious without being cliché. However, if Kanye West’s purpose was to become a director it was not successful. Lack of dialogue, and minor unclear metaphor and excessive explosions weakened the film and metaphor. Most likely Kanye West’s purpose was to sell records and recruit fans, it is unclear whether this worked because people are likely to react differently to this video because it has never really been done before.

Kanye West and Jay-Z Finally Reunite On a New Song

By Clayton Purdom

Kanye West at his DONDA listening event at MercedesBenz Stadium on July 22 2021 in Atlanta Georgia.

Kanye West has always spoken through his guest verses, whether it was the Chicago dues-paying of College Dropout 's features, Pusha T's thesis statement on "Runaway," or the clout-flexing Malice verse on Jesus Is King . But few verses have ever spoken louder than the benediction delivered by Jay-Z at the close of West's new album Donda , which he premiered at a live listening event in Atlanta's Mercedes Benz Stadium last night (although at press time, the album is still nowhere to be found on streaming services). Apparently recorded at 4 p.m. yesterday , the brief verse, well, sorta sounds like it was recorded at 4 p.m. yesterday. While Kanye does his best Phil Collins, Hov raps in broad strokes, taking a few bars to play to the album's dark-night-of-the-soul themes of redemption and exile, before pricking the ears of exhausted news writers internet-wide:

"Donda, I'm with your baby when I touch back road Told'em stop all of that red cap, we goin' home Not me with all of these sins, casting stones This might be the return of The Throne"

He spends the rest of the verse reiterating the duo's recoupling, folding in a few references to songs throughout Kanye's catalog. West previously teased a Throne reunion back in 2018, but that was filed by most listeners alongside the Drake collaborative LP in the encyclopedia of abandoned Kanye projects. Coming from Jay, and in this setting, though, it felt different. At the Donda premiere event, Kanye stood stock-still at the center of his endless pale stage, fist up in the sky, knowing that if any verse could solidify the album’s redemption narrative it was this one: his big brother, (BIG's brother) putting an arm around him after years of beef. (In that way, the verse feels similar to Jay’s appearance on the “Power” remix —the one where he says “In search of the truth even if it goes through Taylor Swift”. It’s less about bars and wordplay, more a show of public support during a tough time.)

It was twenty years ago this fall when Kanye first emerged with a quartet of productions on Jay-Z's instant-classic Blueprint . The soulfulness of Ye's beats on that LP helped inspire what was then Jay's most introspective album, and the two have propelled each other creatively since. Ye’s production has popped up on pretty much every Jay album this millennium, while Jay regularly puts soul-bearing verses to wax for Kanye records, like his chest-thumping "Love / I don't get enough of it" verse on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy . In 2008, Kanye ended Graduation with a full-track ode to Jay. (West’s fealty extends to the whole family: It was, you will recall, in Beyoncé’s name that Kanye interrupted Taylor Swift in 2009.) By the time the two recorded a collaborative LP in 2011 , they had a decade of creative production behind them.

That all seemed to change in fall 2016, as Kanye aired grievances against Jay during the abortive Saint Pablo tour, criticizing Hov's response to Kim Kardashian’s robbery: "You wanna know how I'm feeling? Come by the house. Bring the kids by the house, like we're brothers. Let's sit down." At a later show , West got even more pointed: "Jay-Z—call me, bruh … Jay-Z, I know you got killers. Please don’t send them at my head.” It was on one of these runs, shortly before the tour was halted due to Kanye's hospitalization for exhaustion, that the emcee first declared his support for Donald Trump.

A few months after the Saint Pablo monologues, Jay released 4:44 , which wasted no time addressing their falling out in the album intro, and featured more pointed references throughout. In an interview with Rap Radar to promote the album , Jay assured he and Kanye just needed to have a real conversation to straighten their family business out. But the two continued to speak to each other through interviews and bars instead. Kanye claimed that the rift began when Jay and Beyoncé skipped his 2014 wedding—cut to Jay-Z rapping, on a song with Beyoncé , that he “ain’t going to nobody’s nothin if me and my wife beefin,” acknowledging that Kanye and Kim’s wedding came during the fallout of their infamous elevator video.

Kanye West and JayZ attend Sean Combs 50th Birthday Bash on December 14 2019 in Los Angeles California.

The two have made a few nods toward each other in recent years: Jay wagged a finger at media and fans pitting them against each other (then uncharacteristically went out of his way on Twitter to clarify that his bar was not a diss) and has continued to refer to Kanye as his “little brother.” Kanye, for his part, posted an Instagram of the Carters captioned “famleeeeee” and they all appeared to reunite for the first time, publicly at least, at Diddy’s 50th birthday party in 2019.

But all that history is why Jay's slight verse carries so much weight after Kanye's (let's say) volatile back half of the '10s. Donda 's a heavy tenth LP, in that it's only meaningful to the listener in relation to how much Kanye’s previous nine LPs meant something to them. The rough-hewn collage of collaborators reflects an artist who, at least on record, is dropping the ugly rhetoric and didactic sermonizing of recent years to ruminate once again on his titanic strengths — and weaknesses. Nobody is better equipped to speak to those on record than Jay-Z.

Just, uh, do not expect Watch The Throne 2 anytime soon. Kanye operates according to his own timeline.

Paper instructions: Write a 3-4 page essay that provides a semiotic analysis

Select a musical artist or group (KANYE WEST)

Although this might seem like an easy topic to write about, beware that this must not end up being just a biography of the artist or group. Don’t just state what songs the artists have sung and how their careers have progressed. Instead, you must discuss what values the artists are promoting (whether consciously or not) within their music. How do their images, lyrics, songs, performances, etc. serve as signs of these values? * To think critically about the signs that entertainment media uses and to provide a semiotic analysis of how those signs somehow reflect or try to subvert the culture in which the text is produced. * To utilize other writers’ theories to help support and/or to articulate your own opinions and disagreements with those writers. * To provide a central thesis statement and to support that thesis statement with evidence from your analysis.

In recent years, Kanye West turned off some of his fans and peers with his controversial statements and actions . Ye’s longtime associate, Pusha T, spoke about why the polarizing rapper still manages to collaborate with big stars.

Kanye West angered some African Americans by suggesting chattel slavery was a choice and promoting “White Lives Matter” shirts. He also caught heat from members of the Jewish community. West threatened to go “death con 3 on Jewish people” and praised Adolf Hitler.

“I believe that there’s a level of visibility that comes along with being next to somebody like Ye. At the end of the day, it’s a level of musicality and genius-level production that comes along with being next to him,” Pusha T told Complex .

In addition, the My Name Is My Name album creator said, “So you get a lot of things that I think artists are looking for these days in being next to him. I mean, you get that. You get a lot.”

Kanye West recently partnered with R&B singer Ty Dolla $ign to release their Vultures 1 collaborative studio LP. The album features Nipsey Hussle, Quavo, Playboi Carti, Travis Scott, Lil Durk, Rich The Kid, Chris Brown, and more.

Pusha T has worked extensively with Kanye West throughout his music career. The Clipse member signed to West’s G.O.O.D. Music, and he eventually became president of the label. Push and Ye also appeared together on songs such as “Runaway” and “New God Flow.”

“It’s all about the music for me and just making music at a certain level,” Pusha stated in his interview. “I’ve been in this game a long time, so it’s about a certain type of hip-hop that I want to make. And truthfully, Ye definitely knows what I like to make, and I only want to be a part of things that I want to do.”

Bianca Censori wears sheer tights as a top for another Cheesecake Factory date with Kanye West

Making the Cheesecake Factory their runway.

Bianca Censori stepped out in yet another scandalous look Wednesday while on a lunch date with husband Kanye West at the popular eaterie for the second time this week.

The couple walked arm-in-arm as they made their way inside the West Hollywood location, with the “Heartless” rapper flashing his titanium teeth as they erupted in laughter.

Bianca Censori and Kanye West.

Despite dining at the family-friendly restaurant, the former Yeezy architect left little to the imagination, using a pair of completely sheer nude tights as a top.

Censori, who went braless underneath the low-cut garb, completed her look with micro gray Prada shorts ($825), white pointed-toe heels and a black purse.

The 29-year-old kept her short tresses slicked back and added a pop of color to her outfit with a swipe of blue eyeshadow.

The 46-year-old rapper, for his part, donned his typical baggy, all-black outfit and a pair of dark sunglasses.

Bianca Censori

Just two days prior, the pair visited the same Cheesecake Factory location inside The Grove in equally eyebrow-raising outfits.

Censori — for once — used a pair of tights for their actual purpose, wearing ultra-low-rise green leggings on her bottom half and a barely-there tan bandeau across her chest.

The fluorescent tights were pulled down low enough to see the top of the Australian beauty’s backside. West was even seen constantly readjusting the leggings, pulling them even lower as the two waited for an elevator.

West has been dressing his wife in varying X-rated looks since they tied the knot in December 2022. However, Censori’s family is reportedly fuming over the change in her wardrobe.

Earlier this month, the Daily Mail reported that Bianca’s father, Leo Censori, wanted to confront the controversial rapper over his daughter’s new “trashy” style.

Kanye West and Bianca Censori.

“Bianca’s father, Leo, wants to have a proper sit down with Kanye and ask him what the hell he is thinking when he parades Bianca around like a trashy naked trophy pony,” a source close to Bianca told the outlet.

Leo reportedly wanted to flip the tables on West and ask how the father of four would feel if his daughters — North, 10, and Chicago, 6 — “were seen in public half-naked in outfits encouraged by their husbands.”

“He knows that there is no way in hell that Kanye would allow this for his daughters so it makes no sense why he would encourage this for his own wife,” they added.

Kanye West and Bianca Censori

West, who shares his children with ex Kim Kardashian, has a long history of dressing the women he dates. However, Censori has noticeably been dressed in less clothing than the others.

“No man should ever encourage the woman that he loves to walk out in public and present herself like this. That isn’t love. That is control.”

Despite her family’s concern, Censori has continued stepping out in provocative clothing , from butt-baring metallic mini nanoskirts to completely sheer catsuits with nothing underneath.

Former Employee Files Legal Suit Against Kanye West Alleging Racial Discrimination

R apper and fashion mogul Kanye West finds himself on the receiving end of a lawsuit with allegations of racial discrimination. A past security guard has brought the suit forward with serious claims.

Recent legal action has been taken against the 46-year-old artist by Benjamin Deshon Provo , who was previously employed at West’s Donda Academy and on additional gigs. The case was initiated on Friday (April 26) in Los Angeles.

Benjamin is voicing several grievances regarding his employment period with Kanye .

Click to read more about the allegations…

It has come to light through court papers, as reported by People , that Kanye habitually mistreated and yelled at Black workers. The claimant, Benjamin , has described his experience as one filled with “severe discrimination, harassment.”

He asserts that there was a notable discrepancy in how Kanye dealt with him and other Black employees, including payment at a reduced rate without just cause.

Upon raising issues about unequal pay, Benjamin claims he saw a “decrease” in his earnings. He was advised that budget constraints meant that they “can’t afford security at the moment.”

His termination, he asserts, came as a result of his choice not to cut off his dreadlocks, which holds significance for him in practicing his Muslim faith.

Earlier within the month, reports surfaced claiming Kanye may be implicated in a battery incident in Los Angeles, after allegedly striking a man. His representatives noted that his actions were a response to an assault against his spouse Bianca Censori . Their full statement is on the record.

It’s noteworthy that just over the last year, Kanye has encountered a lawsuit from past educators at his Donda Academy. Additionally, in June 2023, a photographer weighed legal action against him following an incident where their phone was purportedly thrown by the artist.

New Lawsuit Accuses Ye of Unfair Treatment Toward Black Employees and Ultimatum to Remove Locs

Kanye West - Instagram screenshot

*The hip-hop mogul Ye , known to many as Kanye West , finds himself enmeshed in another legal battle, this time initiated by Benjamin Deshon Provo , a former guard at Ye’s Donda Academy. Disturbing allegations of discriminatory treatment hover ominously over Ye, as Provo levels accusations of unfair dismissal rooted in his refusal to sever his (dread) locs.

In a distillation of the grievances, as reported by Page Six, the legal filings portray a disconcerting environment—painting a narrative of disparity with the words, “Kanye and members of his management team subjected Provo and other black employees to less favorable treatment than their white counterparts.”

With an employment journey at Donda Academy starting in August 2021, Provo’s experience soured, escalating to “emotional distress” purportedly resulting from Ye’s insistence on changing his physical appearance. Commanding, “Alright y’all, it is time for you to shave your heads. I am not messing around,” Ye’s words reportedly carried an ultimatum of conformity or dismissal.

Defiant in the face of a directive that clashed with his Muslim beliefs, Provo recounts a particularly stark ultimatum passed down from Ye, “Kanye said, ‘Tell the one with the dreads to shave his head or he is fired.’” Allegedly, Provo was pressured to choose between his identity and livelihood, as per the statements within the filed complaint.

The narrative takes a deeper plunge into the accusations as The Root claims a revelation of a racial pay gap surfaced, along with Ye’s censorship of Black history literature at his academy, a troubling echo from Cecilia Hailey’s similar claims in another lawsuit.

The distressing allegations further entwine Ye with sentiments of negativity aimed at Black historical champions, one more thread in the growing tapestry of claims against him.

This is not an isolated narrative; the artist is previously noted for being at the legal crosshairs over similar grievances. Trevor Phillips’ lawsuit earlier in the month mirrors this tale, augmenting it with allegations of more harsh treatment towards Black staff, alongside sharing of anti-semitic and homophobic comments.

Asserting the principle that fame does not equate to immunity, Carney R. Shegerian, spokesperson for the pursuing legal team of Shegerian & Associates, states:

“No matter how famous one is, no one is above the law. We look forward to holding Mr. West accountable for the discrimination alleged in the complaint.”

Beyond the charged atmosphere of discrimination, Provo describes an additional layer of turmoil, contending with aggressive clashes with paparazzi amid his duties. The lawsuit casts a wide net, with Provo seeking redress for the myriad of injustices, from a hostile workplace to labor violations, aiming to hold Ye accountable for what unfolded during his tenure at Donda Academy.
