Basic Information
Research Scholarships for RWTH Graduate Students
The International Office awards RWTH Ambassador Scholarships for research stays in the key partner countries USA and Canada and for partner universities in Australia. As part of the program, scholarships are awarded to master’s students and doctoral candidates enrolled at RWTH. The program is aimed highly-qualified and motivated students and doctoral candidates who will take part in a research internship at a renowned university or research institution in the above named countries and who would like to act as an ambassador for RWTH Aachen during their stay. The intended internship can be credited as a student research project or internship or can be carried out independently of the regular curriculum. In the former case, the student must get the approval of the respective Examination Board.
Program Objective
Students who are accepted as RWTH Ambassadors should be eager to take on their new role in the host country. During the time as ambassador, students will be asked to represent RWTH Aachen University at selected events or conferences and thereby support RWTH Aachen’s promotional activities. Research Ambassadors also seek to cultivate and strengthen the relationship between the host institution and RWTH.
Monthly Stipend
The scholarship will guarantee a monthly allowance of 500 euros and will be awarded for up to six months. The award of the grant will be decided based on the quality of the application documents. Application is also open to candidates who are currently completing a research internship abroad.
Application
Application Requirements
- Enrolled as a master's student or doctoral candidate at RWTH
- In very good academic standing
- Confirmation of your stay abroad from the host institution
- Be motivated to represent RWTH Aachen University and be actively involved in the RWTH Ambassador Program
Application Materials
Please submit the following English-language documents by email (scan the original documents and attach them as a PDF file):
- Planned research project/activity
- Reasons for wanting to act as an RWTH Ambassador
- Ideas for your activities as an RWTH Ambassador
- Planned duration of your stay, including start and end date
- Academic transcript for your current or your last completed degree
- Confirmation of project placement
- Letter of recommendation
Those who wish to apply for the first deadline in the year must submit their complete application between January 1 and February 1.
Those wishing to apply for the second deadline in the year must submit their complete application between July 1 and August 1.
The selection committee meetings are held approximately six weeks after each deadline.
Please note
It is the responsibility of the student to find a suitable research internship. If students would like to receive academic recognition for the research internship within their faculty at RWTH (e.g. credits or as an obligatory internship), they should contact the respective examination board in their department before the departure.

The costs and how to finance them are certainly a decisive factor when deciding on where to study abroad. Universities in most countries charge quite high fees. Students from Germany are only exempted from such fees if they are taking part in a student exchange program.
Of course, when students from Germany go abroad to study, they also have to consider living costs (renting somewhere to live, food, clothing, health insurance, transport). In many countries, these costs are a lot higher than they are in Germany. This means that studying abroad is often going to be a lot more expensive than studying in Germany. Students should also consider - particularly if they are going to study in a country outside of Europe - the costs involved in travelling to that country (plane tickets). You will find some information about this on the webpages on the respective countries or in the reports written by previous exchange students. Students should also realize that they might decide to visit various locations in the country of their choice, or even visit nearby countries. This would entail travelling costs that should not be underestimated.
Students might also fund their period of study abroad by their own means or, under certain conditions, they might apply for financial support (e.g. via DAAD, ERASMUS, BAFöG etc.)

Slides for the information event in the context of the international week of the RWTH on 24.10.2023 "Going abroad with AVT"
Comment: We have adapted our application process for ERASMUS (except Cambridge) to that of the faculty. Please note the changes!
FAQ Thesis Abroad AVT
Which language certificate is required for a study abroad with the avt.
Usually, a language certificate is only necessary, if you are nominated by us and you subsequently have to apply to the partner university. For your application for the nomination for the AVT no formal language certificate is required, as long as your application does not give rise to serious doubt in this regard. As we are not directly concerned with the language certificate for the partner universities, we cannot name specific language certificates. Generally, there is a variety of possibilites to proof your English skills – an „Englisch-Leistungskurs“ is only one of them. If needed, an appropriate test (e.g. TOEFL or IELTS) can also be delivered later.
Which documents are required for the application for a bachelor’s or master’s thesis with the AVT abroad?
For the application for a thesis abroad with the AVT, we ask for your CV (in English), GPA of academic performances (all), high school graduation diploma and a letter of motivation (in English). If you are applying for multiple exchange programs at different universities abroad, please consider to write a separate letter of motivation for each of them. All necessary documents for your application to one university should be aggregated to a single .pdf-file and send directly to our email address .
What is the scope of the letter of motivation?
All MoveOn applications are subject to the general conditions of the MoveOn portal. These include a text stating the subject motivation (max.2000 characters), one on the non-subject motivation (max.1500 characters), one describing own extracurricular qualifications (max.750 characters), as well as one explaining why one considers oneself a suitable representative of RWTH (max.750 characters). All these texts are to be submitted in English for the AVT exchange programs.
Deviating from this, if an application is made via e-mail, a separate letter of motivation of 1-2 pages should be submitted. This must also be written in English (exception: the cover letter for the CMU - this must be written in German and has a maximum length of one page).
According to which criteria will my application be examined? Which role does my GPA play?
The selection criteria of the AVT strongly comply with the criteria of the faculty (consult Kriterien der Fakultät ). The individual criteria are:
- Grade of preliminary studies resp. GPA of academic performances so far (Bachelor) resp. GPA of Bachelor Diploma (Master) as well as duration until graduation
- Your application (above all motivation, preparation, preoccupation with the university’s offers, optical impression, …)
- Extracurricular commitment
Consider, that you will be representing the AVT abroad; therefore a very good to good academic performance is implied.
How many applications do the AVT Erasmus programs receive each year?
The number of applicants varies reasonably. A reliable statement can therefore not be made concretely. Generally, we can always encourage you to apply.
Progress report
You can receive progress reports, once you have been nominated for an AVT exchange program. We expect every participant in one of our programs to share her/his experiences in a progress report (2-3 pages, gladly more) after returning, so future students can benefit from your experiences. Since the faculty expects a progress report as well, the same report can be submitted for the AVT exchange programms.
Do I have to send my application to the partner universities?
The application proceeds in two steps. First, you will apply to us for a nomination. For this purpose, you need to send in the documents specified on the AVT website. In the next step, if you are chosen, your nomination is reported to the partner university. After that, you will have to apply directly to the university abroad as well. Depending on the university, there are different specifications and deadlines for this application; therefore, you will have to consult the website of the according university. This step will only be relevant after a potential nomination.
What about Brexit?
Negotiations between the EU and the UK regarding Brexit have not yet been finalized at the present time (January 2022). Nevertheless, student exchange with universities in the UK is possible in the academic year 2022/23. No tuition fees will be charged and financial support is also possible during this period. For a short stay of up to six months, no visa is required; for six months or more, you will need a visa.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) has set up a website showing the latest developments.
If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us (ideally in English) via email . (This this email address is valid for all programs with the exception of Carnegie Mellon University )
