The 12 Most Credible Review Platforms for Customer Feedback

The 12 Most Credible Review Platforms for Customer Feedback

In this day and age, next to nobody makes a decision without consulting the internet first. Think about it – what do you normally do if you need the answer to a question? Or if there’s a fact that you’d like to know? You Google it, right?

So, what do you think your potential customers do when they’re considering a new product or trying out a new business? They’re going to Google it too. And they’re going to want to find out other people’s experience by looking at review platforms.

Did you know that   90% of consumers   read online review sites before visiting or buying from a business? Reviews can not only build your reputation but also support your company’s marketing efforts, influence your campaigns and play a huge role in your overall success.

We will cover…

What is a review platform?

How do get customer reviews?

The benefits of customer reviews

The most popular review platforms, the best review platforms for b2b companies, trustradius, the best review platforms for b2b and b2c companies, angie’s list, the best review platforms for seo, google my business, bing places.

  •  TripAdvisor

Review platforms are places where customers can leave feedback about products or services for others to read.

The wider the word spreads about how good your company is, the more people you’ll attract, so ideally you want these reviews to be as honest and as positive as possible. Whilst the reviews themselves are the attraction to new customers, displaying them in the ideal place is an important step in the right direction for your business. Hence, including reviews on your website and social media accounts is a good idea.

How do you get customer reviews?

The best way to encourage customer reviews is simply to ask. Quite often, customers are more than happy to give you feedback about their experiences with your products or services, especially if those experiences are positive.

Here are a few ways you could go about this:

  • Put up signs, stickers, or badges in your business, or on your website,  for online review sites. This not only encourages customers to write reviews but prompts people to read those reviews too, potentially attracting new customers. Plus, badges instantly instill faith in the customer.
  • Include a CTA (call-to-action) on the back of a menu, receipt, invoice, or coupon code asking the customer to leave a review.
  • Automate an email campaign that is triggered once a customer shops at your business or uses your services. This way you can ensure that only the customers who experienced your brand are prompted to leave a review.   See how to do this with Zapier .
  • Or, the simplest way of all, is just to verbally ask the customer. After you make a sale, give a customer a good meal or provide a great service, ask them what they thought and if they would be willing to leave a review. If you don’t ask, you don’t get!

What makes customer reviews so impactful?

Higher search ranking

Firstly, reviews help your business rank higher on search engines like Google or Bing. The more your customers trust you, the more Google will trust you and consequently, you’ll attract even more customers. A   study by Moz   revealed that reviews contribute over 15% of a website’s ranking factor. For local businesses this can really make a difference.

Better click-through rate

Not only will you rank higher on result pages, if you have glowing reviews and you add the star ratings to your website, Google will show them on the results page. Look at the example on the screenshot below. Which listing would you click on? The one with the stars, right?

SEARP Google Search Result Page

Those stars are called Google Seller Ratings and can have an incredible impact on your CTR (click-through rate).   Here’s how to get them working .

Help the purchasing decision

Even more importantly, reviews are beneficial because they influence your customers’ decisions. Reviews build trust, promote confidence in your business and a couple of good reviews could be the tipping point for whether a customer sticks with you or decides to go elsewhere.

Now that you know the benefits of customer reviews, here are some of the best online review platforms for your business. Depending on your niche, you have plenty of options to gather reviews with these review platforms.

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of which online review sites fit a specific niche best, let’s take a look at the ones that are the surefire ways to get started.

Facebook Ratings and Reviews

More than just a place to catch up with friends and giggle at cat videos, Facebook can work wonders as a review platform. With more than   2.7 billion monthly visitors , it is the largest social network in the world, and it’s also in the   top 10 highest used websites   for global internet engagement. Straight off the bat, Facebook reviews will give you a huge advantage.

Having a Facebook page for your business also gives you the highest range of options of any of the online review sites listed in this article. Not only can your customers leave reviews and read the reviews of others, but they can like and comment on other people’s feedback and ask questions.

Yelp   is certainly old school, yet still used by millions. Originally focusing on restaurants, it built quite a strong reputation before branching out into almost every other industry. If you’re on Yelp, make sure to claim your business profile quickly so that you can keep track of what is being said about your brand.

yelp

Like many review platforms, you can’t edit the reviews on Yelp, but you can respond to them, so try to keep things friendly and helpful. Furthermore, Yelp helps train small businesses how to take control of their customer reviews and how to hold social events for Yelpers (a.k.a. Yelp reviewers).

Are you catering to other business owners? If you are a bookkeeper, business supplier, software company, or other business-to-business company, the following review websites will help you spread the word.

A favorite among SaaS (Software As A Service) companies, if your business sells software, you’ll want to make sure you have a presence on   G2 . As the leading B2B software review platform, they’ve collected over 1,000,000 reviews for different products and have over   4 million monthly visitors .

With a nifty LinkedIn authenticator, reviewers can post reviews or easily share their thoughts on a particular software preference with their entire LinkedIn network. This both adds another layer of trust to the readers and is an easy way to reach a potentially large, relevant audience.

10to8-g2

G2 allows you to compare businesses with hundreds of similar services by 5-star rating, price, ease of use, quality of support, set up speed, and much more. Visitors can also upvote or downvote reviews based on their own experiences. Business owners can easily read competitors’ reviews to get a better understanding of what consumers are looking for.

Perfect for eCommerce, marketing, and other online businesses,   Reviews.io   gathers honest feedback for your business using an invite-only option. This means that customers can only leave reviews if a company requests it, via a simple email invitation.

Businesses can ask their customers to leave reviews on specific services, products, or the business as a whole. This gives companies a lot more control over who leaves feedback. As a verified Google review partner, all feedback gathered by Review.io is optimized for search results, which will further aid your SEO game. Plus, the platform has a well-designed UI, making it easy to navigate and use.

Similar to G2,   TrustRadius   focuses on software and service-based B2B companies.  Reviewers are also authenticated through LinkedIn, so setting up an account is nice and simple. Visitors can review a company alone, or in comparison with another by looking at a series of stats including 5-star rating, pricing, and in-product pictures.

TrustRadius is a particularly good tool for gathering feedback and understanding the customers’ issues and pain points. What’s more, as TrustRadius doesn’t offer a sponsored option, it’s definitely one of the most honest online review platforms out there.

If your business sells to the general public, you’ll likely do better with a review platform that is more suited to consumers. The following are great online review sites for both business-to-business and business-to-customer companies.

Another favorite with SaaS (Software As A Service) companies,   Capterra   features nearly a million reviews and an engaged and active community. Users can easily search for software based on industry, software type, or a particular product. That search is divided into almost 700 different categories – that’s a lot of data to help you find the perfect fit!

10to8-capterra

Visitors can directly compare up to four businesses side by side using the ‘compare to’ feature. Plus, another point for Capterra: the webpages for different categories consistently rank high on Google, so if you’re looking to better your SEO, then using this review platform will most certainly help. They are also backing their organic ranking with paid efforts so they basically take care of advertising for you.

Originally started as a review platform for small businesses,   Angie’s List   has developed into a high-end, reputable site. It is a paid platform, but it’s all the better for it as you don’t get the usual ramblings and nonsense that you sometimes do with free sites. Instead, reviews are a lot more thought out and, resultantly, more valuable.

The reviews are divided into categories, then they are given an A-F rating. They can’t be anonymous either, which further helps with preventing spam and fake responses. Angie’s list also acts as an intermediary between conflicts, which ultimately means that they could end up siding with you over an unfair customer. It’s free to set up a page for your company, but they also offer two paid plans for more options.

Better Business Bureau

An online review site built on trust, the   BBB   is a non-profit consumer advocacy group. They evaluate all types of businesses against a set of standards, providing the facts and letting the customer reviews speak for themselves.

Another premium review platform, the BBB charges companies to join it and, although they don’t actually force you, it’s recommended to follow the   BBB’s code of conduct . If you decide to get your business profile on the Better Business Bureau, then you’ll be able to display a badge on your site which shows customers how trustworthy you are.

When it comes to elevating your business, unless you’re a one-man-band, a lot of that hard work and effort will be undertaken by your staff. And as your business grows, so will your team. That’s where   GlassDoor , the workplace review platform, comes in.

With reviews of over 540,000 companies, you can bet that a lot of potential job candidates will want to check out other people’s experiences before they accept a job offer or even apply for a position.

Employees can rate a company on everything from the employment process itself, to everyday working life. If you get lots of positive reviews from lots of happy staff, GlassDoor has the power to radically improve your employment brand. This will help you scout out the best talent for future employment and gather feedback about what you could work on from within your business.

If the main reason you’re looking for customer reviews is to increase your credibility to search engines, we recommend using these….

The most obvious review platform to support your SEO,   Google My Business   is a free tool to help businesses manage their presence online. You simply need a verified business account on Google and your website, business name, contact information, opening hours, and location will all be neatly tied to your search listing.

Anyone searching for your business will automatically see all of these details as well. The best part? They will also see all of your reviews, giving them an instant reason to click on your site link or dial your phone number.

Bing Places   provides much the same service but, of course, for Bing users instead. But before you decide to label Bing as a lesser Google, whilst it may not be the big boy, Microsoft’s search engine still has the   second highest   search engine market share online. So, it’s more than likely, that you’ll end up with a few extra clicks and customers by adding your business to Bing.

TripAdvisor

Did you know that customer reviews for businesses   occur highest in the travel sector ?

TripAdvisor   has seriously evolved from where it started back in 2000. These days, not only are they covering hotels, holiday rentals, restaurants, and tour companies, they also feature customer reviews for spas, coffee shops, cafes, and other entertainment businesses.

tripadvisor

Whilst a substantial portion of searches are still travel-related, people are also browsing TripAdvisor reviews before choosing a new restaurant to dine at or a new place to take the kids at the weekend. With Google searches like ‘restaurants near me’ bringing TripAdvisor a tonne of monthly traffic, it’d be well worth your time to add your business to their results.

It’s a wrap

There you have it: a nice, comprehensive list of the best review platforms broken into categories waiting for you to cherry-pick your favorites! But then what?

Then you can learn how to utilize the glowing feedback that you gathered on these platforms. Check out our article on   the power of reviews – and how to use them !

32 Customer Review Sites for Collecting Business & Product Reviews

Lindsay Kolowich Cox

Published: July 10, 2023

We (and the rest of the internet for the past decade) have already spent some time convincing you of the importance of acquiring online customer reviews for your business. (Did you know that in a recent HubSpot Research survey, 1/3 of respondents said review sites played an important role in their purchasing decision-making process?)

Benefits of Customer Reviews

There are two major reasons why customer reviews are important.

1. Customer reviews are a learning opportunity for your business.

Negative or neutral reviews provide your company with an opportunity to learn and develop. You can see exactly where your business is failing to meet customer needs and remove common roadblocks in the customer journey .

For particularly poor reviews, reps can follow up with these customers and prevent potential churn. They can highlight specific pain points and craft personalized responses geared to specific problems. This makes your customer service team appear more invested in your customers' goals, which results in fewer negative reviews and increased customer retention.

2. Customer reviews are marketing and sales tools for your business.

The other major reason for obtaining reviews is the opportunity to share them with potential customers. Positive reviews can be used as customer testimonials during lead acquisition and can help you add more contacts to your CRM . In fact, 91% of consumers read at least one review before purchasing a product. So, don't just pat yourself on the back the next time you get a five-star review; Make sure everyone knows how good a job your company is doing.

With that in mind, it's not safe to assume we all know where to track down those positive customer reviews. I mean, we might all be able to rattle off one or two sites ("Yelp! And I think you can get them to show up in Google Maps, too?"), but we don't exactly have a laundry list of options at our disposal

Check out our list of the best product review websites for B2B and B2C companies. Keep in mind that every industry has niche sites, too. For instance, those in the restaurant industry may want to be on UrbanSpoon or OpenTable. This blog post won't get into sites that are specific to one industry, but it will provide review sites that apply to businesses in almost any industry.

1. Amazon Customer Reviews

Amazon was one of the first online stores to allow consumers to post reviews of products in 1995 , and it remains one of the most important resources for consumers looking to make informed purchase decisions. Even if people can and do buy a product elsewhere, if it's sold on Amazon.com — unless it's gasoline or drug paraphernalia , that is — then many people will look up its Amazon review before they decide to buy.

What's going to separate your product from one that looks just like it? Those shiny gold stars and good customer reviews. Products are rated on a five-star rating scale, which is broken down by the percentage of reviews per star, followed by most helpful customer reviews and most recent customer reviews.

Benefits of Amazon Customer Reviews:

  • Amazon has over 300 million users who can see your review.
  • Amazon's rating system is straightforward and easy to understand.
  • Amazon offers a product ranking feature that rates your product's popularity.
  • Amazon users are loyal — 22% won't look at competitors if they discovered the product on Amazon.

2. Wirecutter

Part of the New York Times, Wirecutter is an excellent resource for customers looking for honest, independent product reviews. All products go through rigorous testing by the Wirecutter team so readers can rest assured that their recommendations are legit.

From a business perspective, there isn't much you can do to influence ratings on this site, but it should encourage your brand to make its products the best they can be.

Benefits of Wirecutter:

  • Reviews on Wirecutter are in-depth and highly researched.
  • Although Wirecutter earns commission through affiliate links, they do not earn if readers return a product they recommended that they are dissatisfied with — keeping reviewers honest.
  • Wirecutter gets about 12 million readers per month and serves as excellent promotion should your brand get chosen as one of its top picks.

3. Angi (Formerly Angie's List)

Geared toward U.S.-based service businesses, Angi is a "higher-end" review site, because users actually have to pay for membership. But you get what you pay for. The reviews, given on an A–F scale, are typically very well-thought-out — not a lot of that ranting and raving that's more common on free review sites. The reviews can't be anonymous, which helps cut down on fake or misrepresentative reviews, and companies are allowed to respond to the reviews posted about them, too.

It's free to set up a page for your company. Once you have yours, encourage your customers who are on Angie's List to leave reviews there — members are the only ones allowed to do it!

Benefits of Angie's List:

  • Reviews on Angi are typically of high-quality since users need to pay to use the site and can't post anonymously.
  • Even though this is a paid subscription service, it's free to list your company on Angi.
  • If a customer has a bad experience with a recommended provider, Angi will work with both the customer and the company to resolve the issue.

  • Since Choice evaluates products and services independently, its reviews are unbiased.
  • Choice has a "Choice Picks" page where you can see the best products that it recommends.

5. Trustpilot

Trustpilot is a fast-growing, community-driven consumer review platform based in Denmark, although it has expanded out of Europe into 65 countries, including the U.S. The platform for businesses helps companies from all over the world proactively collect customer reviews. It's the customers who write both product and seller reviews, keeping it third-party verified.

While there is a basic version for free (this lets you create a profile page and collect customer reviews), the paid versions let you create customizable review invitations, share ratings and reviews on social media, and link review data to your internal business systems.

Benefits of Trustpilot:

Which? is an independent consumer review organization that tests and reviews products and then writes about them. Unlike Angie's List, it's the folks at Which? who write the reviews — not the customers. They don't accept submissions for product testing or survey inclusion, but they do encourage people to let them know about their products and services by emailing [email protected] .

While this leaves less room for you to influence whether your products end up on their site, it's still worth knowing about and checking in on this popular site, especially if you have customers in the U.K. The website has product reviews for everything from dishwashers and tablets to cars and credit cards. It tests and reviews all these products, and then writes about both its methodologies and results. It also surveys customers for things like the best and worst firms for customer service .

A lot of its content is free, but customers can become members for £10.75 per month to get access to a "Best Buys" and "Don't Buy" list, the latest reviews of products from its test labs, and access to its consumer legal advice service.

Benefits of Which?:

  • Which? offers more than 8,000 free reviews.
  • Which? tests and reviews more than 3,600 new products every year.
  • To prove that it's impartial, Which? provides a video that shows users how it tests and reviews each product.
  • Which? is 100% independent. It doesn't accept freebies from product manufactures or retailers so its reviews remain unbiased.
  • Which? offers a "Safety Alert" feature that notifies users when a product is deemed unsafe. There's also a "Brand Alert" feature that lets you know if a brand has a history of creating unsafe products.

8. Consumer Reports

A nonprofit organization, Consumer Reports is an independent product-testing organization that runs unbiased tests to rate and recommend products. It has reviewed over 7.7 million products, accept no advertising, and pay for all products that it tests. (Fun fact: The company buys and tests 80 cars each year! ) This is about as legitimate as it gets. As such, there's not much you can do here "except" if you sell a product, make sure it's really, really good.

Consumer report customer review site

If nothing else, you could take this website as a lesson in excellent content creation. For each product it reviews, it provides the review criteria, product overviews, a buying guide, and social sharing buttons. It's all quite comprehensive and, well, helpful. Pretty much the key to great content, am I right?

  • Consumer Reports has spent over $30 million on testing and rating products.
  • The company plans to test more than 8,500 new products in 2021.
  • There are over eight product categories to choose from — each having several subcategories within them.

9. Consumer Affairs

Consumer Affairs is a for-profit organization that reviews companies using an “overall satisfaction rating." This average is scored on a one to five-star scale that's updated every time a new review is submitted. Each company's page provides a list of all its reviews, which includes the consumer's star rating as well as a short explanation for its score.

Consumer Affairs also allows users to submit review recordings, which are two-minute videos where people talk about their experience with a brand. This makes the review much more compelling because you can actually see the person talk and express their genuine feelings about the company.

Benefits of Consumer Affairs:

  • Consumer Affairs offers a "trending" section where you can view its lastest and most popular reviews.
  • Consumer Affairs provides a demo for brands looking to buy a subscription to its service.

  • Consumer Affairs has a "Video Review" option where customers can record themselves giving a review.

10. TripAdvisor

If you're in the travel, hotel, airline, entertainment, or restaurant industries, you'll want to check out the reviews on the popular website, TripAdvisor. As the largest travel site in the world, it has over 225 million reviews, opinions, and photos taken by travelers. It also has some awesome content on low airfares, travel guides, rental listings, and advice forums for pretty much every location in the world you could possibly imagine. A lot of people look there before booking a trip.

The key to a successful profile on TripAdvisor is making it as close to the top of the popularity index as possible, so that people searching for information in a specific place see your listing. According to TripAdvisor , the popularity ranking algorithm is based on three key components: quantity, quality, and recency of reviews. Here's an excerpt of the advice they give businesses looking to improve their ranking:

"Quantity : Ask your guests to write reviews, and use our management center tools to remind them after they check out. Offering incentives for reviews is against the rules, though — take a look at our policy to make sure you understand what is and isn't okay.

Quality : Guests who enjoyed first class hospitality and a memorable experience are more likely to write positive reviews. Monitor what previous reviewers have written to see what worked and did not work best for your property so you can maintain and improve your service.

Recency : Recent reviews factor more strongly on your popularity rankings and older reviews have less impact on a hotel's ranking over time. Once again, encourage guests to write reviews to keep fresh content rolling in."

Benefits of TripAdvisor:

  • TripAdvisor has collected over 887 million reviews for eight million companies.
  • TripAdvisor Plus gives you access to discount hotel pricing for over 100,000 locations.
  • The average TripAdvisor Plus member saves about $350 the first time they use their membership.
  • TripAdvisor Business Advantage showcases your company's best reviews so customers see them first when reviewing your profile.

Yelp is a free review site that lets consumers rate businesses on a five-star scale. Any business can set up a profile on Yelp for free, and users can set up their own free profiles to review a business. You're free to respond to reviewers, too, but we recommend taking a balanced and polite approach to any negative reviews you receive, as Yelpers are in a pretty tight-knit community.

Yelp has also come under fire over the past few years for some slightly shady practices, like incentivizing businesses to advertise with them in exchange for gaming the search results for their business ("Pay us money and we'll push bad reviews down!"). Savvier consumers have learned to look at Yelp reviews as a whole and with the reviewer's clout in mind, instead of getting turned off by a business because of one bad listing.

That being said, it's still to your benefit to get a constant stream of positive online reviews coming to your business' Yelp account so happy customers are always at the top of your review feed — especially if you're a location-based business. Yelp profile information contains things like store hours and location information, so your profile will often turn up when people Google your business.

Benefits of Yelp:

  • Yelp has roughly 184 million monthly users worldwide.
  • Anyone can sign up for Yelp and it's fairly easy for customers to leave a review — making it a good source of customer feedback.
  • Yelp users are a tight-knit community. Active users will provide a lot of detailed feedback for your business.
  • Research shows an increase of one star in your Yelp rating can increase revenue by 5-9%.

12. Google My Business

You know those reviews that show up when you search Google for a business? Yeah, those things are on this list in a big way.

Google's Pigeon algorithm update uses distance and location ranking parameters to deliver improved local search results. So, in order for your business' website to be properly optimized for search, you'll want to set up verified accounts with local directories — especially Google's, called "Google My Business." Getting reviews, comments, pictures, and so on, especially on Google, can give you a boost in search. Only verified local Google+ pages can respond to reviews.

An added bonus? Google Maps pulls that information and those reviews into the app, so having a lot of content in there will make your business look more reputable.

Benefits of Google My Business:

  • Google is the world's largest search engine and controls over 90% of the search engine marketshare.
  • Google can localize your review search, meaning it will only show results for businesses located in the area that you searched.
  • It's free to create and customize your Google Business Profile. Setting up only takes a few minutes.
  • Nearly 10% of Google's search algorithm is influenced by Google Reviews. The more positive reviews that you have, the higher your business will rank on SERPs.

customer review website: glassdoor

Employees can share what it's like to interview and work at their companies, and the site shows visitors which companies are rated highest by their employees. Many employers use it to build their employment brand so they can target and recruit candidates, but you can also use the reviews to share ideas internally for improvement among your management team.

Creating an employer account is free, and it's easy to track and respond to reviews. For example, you can set up alerts so you get an email each time a new review is posted so you can acknowledge and respond to each one.

  • Employers can view discussions in real-time from verified employees.
  • Get authentic, anonymous, and unfiltered reviews.
  • Over 7 million users across 300,000 companies.

Manta is a marketing agency that also functions as a customer review site primarily features small- to medium-sized businesses. Manta is different than most review sites because it focuses more on connecting people than it does on reviewing products and services. To find customer reviews, you need to select a business, go to their individual listing page, and scroll past their features and products before seeing a review. That way, customers use the reviews as one of the final selling points for purchasing a product or service.

On Manta, the goal is to rank your business as high as possible for each relevant keyword that users can search. So long as your company is in the top search results, you'll have a higher chance of connecting with leads using this site.

  • Manta has data on 35 million businesses spanning across 149 countries.
  • Every month, Manta adds 14,000 new listings to its website.

27. Facebook Ratings & Reviews

Did you know there's a place on Facebook for fans to leave ratings and reviews of your business? There sure is ... it's named, aptly, Facebook Ratings & Reviews. It appears on the left-hand side of your Facebook Page, and you can't move or remove it like you can other parts of your Page.

Facebook customer review site

28. Twitter

The ridiculously fast-paced nature of Twitter makes it seem like a weird place to try to accumulate reviews. But while users might not always search for reviews directly on Twitter (unless you started some kind of review hashtag, perhaps), tweets are still indexed in search results. That means a user's tweet, whether complimentary or less-than, could pop up in the SERPs when someone's searching for reviews on your business.

Not only that — there are things you can actively do with the positive tweets coming at you. For instance, we tested the element of social proof on conversions here at HubSpot, attaching three tweets that gave positive reviews on an ebook we were promoting at the time. Guess what happened? The CTA with the three tweets converted better than the CTA with no tweets. If you start to "Favorite" tweets that could serve as positive reviews in the future, it'll be easier to find them when you want to use them in your marketing.

Benefits of Twitter:

  • There are over 300 million daily active users on Twitter.
  • Twitter lets you communicate both publicly and privately with users. This means you can respond to customers on your feed, but also move the conversation to direct messaging if needed.
  • Feedback on Twitter is very immediate. When customers want to voice an opinion about your business, they can do it almost instantly on Twitter.
  • Twitter reviews are qualitative. You don't have to worry about an overall rating or satisfaction score when customers leave reviews.

foursquare-customer-review-sites

32. Your Own Website

Finally, the one place where you have total and utter control: your website. It's an excellent place to publicize reviews you receive (perhaps embed some of those tweets you favorited?).

You could carve out a section of your website dedicated just to reviews and testimonials , and even include a form so happy customers can submit their unsolicited reviews.

But if you're actively campaigning for positive online reviews and you encounter happy customers who want to leave you a positive review but don't have accounts on sites like Yelp, Angie's List, or Google, it's handy to have a place on your website to publish their kind words. Consider adding testimonials to landing pages and product pages, too.

Benefits of your own website:

  • You have complete control over the format and rating system for your reviews.
  • You can dictate which reviews you want to publish on your website.
  • Having reviews on your website is timely. People browsing your site can read your positive reviews as they're shopping for your products.

Which customer review site is best?

The easy answer is all of them. The right answer is a little more subjective.

The best customer review site for your business will be whichever one(s) your customers are using most. The more reviews you obtain, the more you'll learn about your business and how customers feel about you.

We Buy Our Own Products

Unlike most websites, we do not get our review units directly from the manufacturers. Instead, we buy everything ourselves, like a normal customer. It means our units aren't cherry-picked by the manufacturers, but actually represent what you would buy.

Comparing product results

Comparable Results

We put all the products we review under the same test bench, so they are easily comparable. Even our pictures are taken in a systematic way. We spend a lot of time comparing the products side-by-side to validate our results. Our test methodology is also on our website so you can confirm the results yourself.

Testing a tv

Continuous, Perceptual Testing

We keep the products that we review until they are discontinued, so we can go back and compare them to ensure our reviews are still accurate. All our ratings are automatically calculated based on our test measurements, which are designed to match what really matters to a customer.

When a product is discontinued or no longer popular, we sell the purchased products locally. You can see what products we currently have for sale here .

Founding Consumers Reports

Striking workers formed Consumers Union, now known as Consumer Reports. CR was created as an independent, nonprofit organization, using testing, reporting, and advocacy to counter marketplace misinformation and advance consumer protections

Guiding Consumers in Wartime

When the U.S. went to war in 1941, manufacturers focused on war production. Many consumers had to ration to make ends meet. To help people make smart decisions with limited funds, CR published a weekly newsletter, “Bread & Butter.”

Exposing Nuclear Fallout in Food

CR launched the first large-scale investigation of consumer exposure to fallout from nuclear weapons testing in food, analyzing the amount of Strontium-90 in milk. As a result, the federal government expanded its monitoring of nuclear fallout.

Surgeon General’s Landmark Report on Smoking

For a decade, CR conducted independent testing and research to highlight the dangers of cigarettes. The Surgeon General’s Advisory Committee on Smoking and Health used CR’s work to draft its landmark report.

U.S. Government Mandates Seat Belts

CR’s tests showed two-thirds of seat belts failed basic safety and durability tests, leading CR to call for better belts and for federal standards that incorporated crash testing. The government later mandated them.

Fighting for Safer Drinking Water

CR published a landmark three-part series on the safety of the United States water supply, which played a key role in encouraging Congress to pass the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Setting New Standards for Child Safety Seats

When CR first crash-tested car seats, 12 out of 15 were rated Not Acceptable. After CR published its findings, the government required manufacturers to certify that their seats would pass a similar test.

Exposing the Dangers of Pesticides

In a study of U.S. Department of Agriculture data, CR found pesticide levels in some fruits and vegetables were too high. Shortly after, one of the pesticides was banned for use on food crops commonly consumed by children.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Created

CR helped to mobilize support in Congress to create the CFPB, an independent agency responsible for overseeing the financial industry with powers to police abusive practices and to enact new consumer protections.

Bisphenol-A Banned in Baby Products

CR was one of the first groups to test food packaging for BPA. After working to pass bans in several states, the FDA finally announced a federal ban on BPA in baby bottles and sippy cups (2012) and infant formula packaging (2013).

A Win on Backup Cameras

After years of CR’s advocating for standards to address the problem of blind zones behind cars and trucks, the Department of Transportation finally required backup cameras in all vehicles less than 10,000 pounds by 2018.

Advancing Laws to Protect Consumer Privacy

The California Consumer Privacy Act provided key individual privacy rights, such as the right to stop the sale of personal info. CR fought efforts to weaken the legislation, mobilizing CR members to call on legislators to enact privacy protections.

Advancing and Protecting Digital Consumer Rights

CR launched the Digital Lab—a bold initiative to advance and protect consumer rights in the digital era by focusing on testing connected products and platforms for hackability, digital privacy, and how responsibly our data is handled.

Fighting Hidden Cable Fees

CR testified before Congress about cable TV fees, following years of advocacy and research. Thousands of CR members contacted lawmakers, and Congress passed a law requiring providers to disclose the total price of service before a consumer signs up.

Protecting Kids & Infants From Dangerous Products

CR’s investigation into the safety of infant inclined sleepers linked to dozens of deaths led to the recall of over 5 million sleepers. Following CR’s outreach, several retailers and online marketplaces said they would stop selling the sleepers.

Navigating the Pandemic

Millions turned to CR for free articles about staying safe and avoiding misinformation as COVID-19 spread. CR advocated for relief measures in Congress to help people stay in their homes, stay online, and avoid surprise medical bills.

Helping Student Borrowers, Stopping Scams

California approved a landmark law championed by CR to provide student loan borrowers the nation’s strongest protections against loan-servicing abuses. The state also created a watchdog to crack down on financial fraud and predatory lending.

Raising Standards for Infant Safety

CR helped pass a landmark national rule to establish strong minimum safety standards for infant sleep products for the very first time.

Making the Green Choice

CR launched the Green Choice rating to help people identify the most environmentally friendly cars, washers, and other products. CR also helped get new greenhouse gas rules for vehicles to reduce emissions and help consumers save money on fuel.

STURDY Act Takes Effect

A landmark law championed by CR requires dressers to meet stability standards to prevent deadly furniture tip-overs.

Tired of Yelp? 14 Alternative Business Review Websites

author image

Table of Contents

The modern consumer thrives on information. Before making a buying decision, customers have long sought out the opinions and experiences of others to find out whether or not a company is credible.

Today, this process is quick, easy, and accessible to anyone with a computer or smartphone and an internet connection. There are few better sources of information for consumers than business review websites.

Yelp is considered the top review site for marketing local businesses . However, it is far from the only reputable business review site. Others may even prove more beneficial for niche products or services.

These 14 review websites are worth looking into if you need honest feedback or ways to improve your business.

What are business review websites?

Business review websites collect customer reviews about the companies they do business with. These aren’t professional reviews, and they aren’t paid – they are from actual customers sharing their honest feedback.

For instance, say you recently hired a local company to install a fence in your backyard. After the service is completed, you can review that company on a business review website.

When you leave a review, you’ll often choose a letter or number rating. You’ll usually have the option to summarize your thoughts about the service you received.

By sharing your positive or negative experience, you help other potential customers decide whether or not to use that company in the future.

Another way for businesses to solicit honest consumer feedback is by conducting business surveys .

How can business review websites benefit your company?

Many businesses feel nervous at the thought of customers leaving them a review, but customer reviews can be a powerful tool for your company. Here are some of the ways business review websites can benefit you:

  • They create social proof. If a customer is on the fence about purchasing from your business, they’re more likely to move forward if they receive a positive recommendation from a friend or family member. Positive reviews create social proof and help new customers feel comfortable doing business with you.
  • They improve SEO. If you run a local business, you can’t afford to ignore business review websites. For example, receiving and responding to Google Business reviews will improve your business’s search engine visibility and increase the odds that local customers will find you.
  • They help you provide better customer service. Nobody wants to receive a negative review from a customer, but it isn’t always a bad thing. If you respond to negative reviews and take steps to remedy the mistake, you could build more customer loyalty over the long run. And you learn valuable information about how to improve your business in the future.

Responding to online reviews , both positive and negative, boosts engagement and helps you steer the narrative surrounding your business.

1. Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business)

Google Business Profile , formerly called Google My Business, allows you to list your business on Google Maps and show up in local search results. It’s free to list your business and information like your business location , hours, and phone number.

You can also invite your customers to leave you a review on Google.` Collecting Google reviews and responding to them shows that you care about customer feedback; more reviews will help you rank higher in Google searches.

To get started, set up and personalize your Business Profile on Google .

2. Facebook Page reviews

If you use Facebook ads for your business, you probably already have a Facebook Business Page set up. Your Facebook Business Page is a great place to stay in touch with your customers and share helpful information about your business.

It’s also an excellent place to collect customer reviews. Take advantage of this feature by turning on the ratings and reviews setting in your Facebook Page settings. From there, invite customers to leave reviews sharing their experiences with your company.

Other unexpected ways Facebook benefits businesses include helping you build an online brand, create professional bonds with competitors, and find top job candidates.

3. Angi (formerly Angie’s List)

Angi is a major name in business reviews. As a platform for accurate information about local businesses from vetted users, Angi guarantees that its reviews are legitimate.

Users pay a membership fee to access the site and write reviews, which come in the form of a letter grade. Businesses that sign up for Angi can interact with members, establish a profile, and respond to reviews about their company. The highest-rated businesses can also earn advertising for deals and discounts.

4. Better Business Bureau

The Better Business Bureau is one of the most trusted names in business ratings and reviews. The BBB grades businesses from A+ to F based on several factors, including reviews, complaints, and business responses to reviews and complaints.

As the BBB is a trusted organization, its ratings could significantly impact a small business. The accreditation process ensures that a business makes a good-faith effort to resolve customer complaints and respond to inquiries.

This effort makes a business more trustworthy in consumers’ eyes. With accreditation (and its fee), a business can receive increased exposure online, access to workshops and webinars, and much more.

5. ConsumerAffairs

Collecting reviews for a business is just one service ConsumerAffairs for Brands offers. When a business signs up, it receives access to all kinds of resources.

This includes articles on how reviews and a strong reputation can increase revenue, how to find brand ambassadors , and how to convert negative customer experiences into positive ones.

If you’re concerned about your brand’s online reputation, the guide to choosing a reputation management service can manage your social media, perform online monitoring and reporting, and more.

6. Foursquare

While Foursquare is best known for its check-in feature, businesses that claim their listings also give customers the ability to leave ratings and tips (reviews) for other customers.

If you sign up for Foursquare for Business, you’ll be able to access user analytics, add your own tips, and offer customer rewards.

7. Glassdoor

The unique thing about Glassdoor is that it provides a way for current and past employees to rate the companies they work for. It is a vital tool for job searching, letting job seekers learn as much about a company as possible.

With Glassdoor for Employers, you can read reviews of your company as a workplace and find quality candidates for a position.

8. HomeAdvisor

This site is similar to Angi, helping customers find and review professionals for home improvement projects. All reviews are verified and go through an extensive screening process.

If you are a professional offering home improvement services, HomeAdvisor Pro allows you to connect with other HomeAdviser users in your area in search of a specific service.

9. Judy’s Book

While it’s not free to add or claim your business on this site, the perks of Judy’s Book for Business are worth it. It’s free for customers to review your business directly on the site, but if you receive other testimonials through social media, email,  letters or other sources, Judy’s Book allows you to post them on your business page at no extra charge.

With a membership, business owners also get a free mobile listing, competitor tracking, a higher search engine ranking and much more.

Expand your social media marketing efforts beyond reviews by using social media marketing solutions to streamline your campaigns and manage your posts and accounts.

Manta is a small business directory that helps local American businesses connect with consumers and each other. While customer reviews are not the site’s primary function, they are one of the site’s features.

11. MerchantCircle

MerchantCircle aims to connect customers with deals, advice and price quotes from local small businesses. Its search functions are structured primarily by city and business category. By default, it ranks the listings from highest-rated and most frequently reviewed, working its way down.

The MerchantCircle Help Center has various links to articles to help new businesses get set up.

12. OpenTable

Although OpenTable was once just for making restaurant reservations, customers can now leave reviews and star ratings. When you search for restaurants, a list based on your search criteria pops up.

One of the first things you’ll notice is the star rating under the restaurant name, the number of reviews, and the percentage of reviewers who recommend the restaurant.

If you are starting a restaurant or want to get an established restaurant on OpenTable, sign up on the OpenTable for Restaurants page to start collecting reviews and increasing your reservations.

13. PlanetRate

Unlike most other review sites, PlanetRate isn’t tied to a specific category or service. So, whether your business is a restaurant, hotel, boutique or anything else, you can register it and begin collecting reviews.

This site also allows users to write in-depth reviews specific to your business’s category, making it easier for potential customers to find the review and, therefore, your business.

VendOp’s goal is to connect people with vendors that best match their needs. A potential customer can search for vendors based on their needs and be presented only with vendors that provide those services, streamlining the search process.

The site also offers a community of real customers who share their experiences with vendors, so potential customers can gain a better understanding of who they’re working with while helping other vendors improve their services.

Jamie Johnson and Jennifer Post contributed to the writing and research in this article.

Today’s time is e-commerce time and in such time it is hard to choose a quality product. So review sites are the best to check which product is best. Thanks for the list you have provided here.

' data-srcset=

We only have one remaining, impartial product review site left in Australia – Productreview.com.au. Other review sites are set up by/for businesses to increase sales. For example, many businesses “steal” good reviews from them to put at the bottom of their own web pages.

i think you are missing a major review site… trustedreviews.com this is my current go to.

No, trustedreviews.com is a site set up by businesses to increase sales and profit.

' data-srcset=

Amazon is the worst place to go for reviews. Many of the reviews are paid for, Amazon allows sellers to combine reviews for different products so if there is a product with, say, 4000+ reviews, and 4 Star average, you can just about guarantee the reviews are a mish-mash of multiple products and you may even be buying an item based off reviews for an entirely different item than what you are purchasing. There are a long list of problems with Amazon Reviews, they should not be trusted for accuracy at any level.

Blog CTA_September 2023_v3

1. Consumer Reports

For unbiased, data-driven information, Consumer Reports is a fail-safe option for product ratings and reviews. As a non-profit organization, Consumer Reports has been an unbiased source of information for consumers since 1936 (before online reviews were even popular!). Consumer Reports gathers data from surveys, tests, and consumer reviews, and compiles recommendations for the best products with the goal of providing trustworthy information for consumers.

You can search the over 7.7 million products that Consumer Reports has reviewed to get an assessment of the top competing products in a specific category, a score for each product that was tested or reviewed, and other valuable insights to help you make the most informed decision possible. By searching for things like "Consumer Reports mattresses" or "Consumer Reports dishwashers", you can get tons of great product reviews.

2. Wirecutter

Now owned and operated by the New York Times, Wirecutter is another trusted source for unbiased product reviews. With Wirecutter, you’ll find recommendations and reviews based on months of research, analysis, and input from experts and consumers alike. The Wirecutter deals and Wirecutter gift guides are also very popular around the holidays, providing recommendations by gift recipients and product category.

Although Wirecutter requires a paid subscription for unlimited access, you'll still find plenty of valuable insights for free. Wirecutter can help you avoid splurging on products that don’t live up to the hype, have features you don’t need, or don't hold up to normal wear and tear .

This is also why extended warranties  are a cost-effective way to extend the life of your products. Shopping with the Mulberry extension and taking advantage of online resources to do you research can help you save money initially and down the road.

3. Good Housekeeping

Good Housekeeping offers more than just food and lifestyle information. While many people might be more familiar with the Good Housekeeping magazine, the Good Housekeeping Institute test thousands of home, beauty, tech, clothing, food and health products to find the best products for you and your family. You'll find product reviews on everything from appliances to mattresses to outdoor living spaces.

Good Housekeeping is based in New York City and takes the art of product reviews very seriously. With staff members from dozens of different disciplines including engineering, culinary, biology, and chemistry experts (and many others), the Good Housekeeping Institute spends each day thoroughly testing thousands of products in order to give you thorough, unbiased review.

4. Popular Mechanics

Popular Mechanics magazine is a publication that has been around for over 100 years, and along with its website has become a trusted source for countless consumers when it comes to product reviews. From technology to tools , you’ll find reliable, extensively-tested reviews that you can trust (as other consumers have since 1902!).

They also cover a wide range of products like fitness equipment , storage solutions, office furniture and kitchen appliances . There's even a Popular Mechanics for kids subscription, which provides lots of fun activities and games for children. If you choose to get a Popular Mechanics subscription, you’ll also enjoy a print copy of their publication, which they send out 6 times per year.

5. TechRadar

If you're looking for advice specifically on tech gear and equipment, that's what you'll find from TechRadar . This resource focuses on everything technology-related, with the goal of being your go-to source for tech-buying advice and everything else you need to buy and enjoy the tech you love.

They have a rigorous review-testing process, looking at long-term value as well. They update and maintain their reviews regularly so you can be sure you're getting up-to-date info, regardless of when a device was released. They say if you can still buy it, it's on their radar. Though they state that they may earn commission if you purchase products through their site, they are also clear that they do not accept payment for product reviews.

6. Honest Product Reviews

Although there’s a bold claim in the name itself, many consumers agree that Honest Product Reviews lives up to its name. From pet-related items to beauty products to electronics , Honest Product Reviews offers unbiased reviews, side-by-side comparisons, and a consumer-friendly format with minimal ads to make your research process a little less painful.

One important detail to note is that Honest Product Reviews does accept compensation from retailers whose products appear on their site. This means that if you choose to click on an Amazon link on their site, chances are they’ll get some kind of commission or receive a benefit in one way or another. While they still provide quality reviews, it is something to keep in the back of your mind.

Bonus resource: Fakespot

While Fakespot doesn't have a content-based website like the other six resources, it will alert you to the quality of a review as you're shopping on retailer websites like Amazon , Walmart , Sephora, eBay, and Best Buy .

When you install the Fakespot Chrome extension, it will provide you with an analysis of existing reviews on the retailer website, giving them an overall grade of A through F based on trustworthiness. You can also choose to further analyze the reviews for a specific product with the Fakespot analyzer.

Protect your purchases with Mulberry Unlimited

Although navigating the world of product reviews can be daunting, there are resources like these to make it less confusing, and more straightforward when it comes to product research.

Additionally, you can subscribe to Mulberry Unlimited to extend the life of your products and ensure that once you do find a quality product, you'll get the maximum value out of it with product protection .

Nobody likes to spend money on a new book only to face that overwhelming feeling of disappointment when it doesn't live up to your expectations. The solution is to check out a few book review sites before you hit the shops. The greater the diversity of opinions you can gather, the more confidence you can have that you'll enjoy the title.

Which book review and book rating sites are worth considering? Here are the best ones.

1. Goodreads

Goodreads is arguably the leading online community for book lovers. If you want some inspiration for which novel or biography to read next, this is the book review site to visit.

You can participate in the community by adding your own rankings to books you've read and leaving reviews for other people to check out. Occasionally, there are even bonus events like question and answer sessions with authors.

2. LibraryThing

LibraryThing is the self-proclaimed largest book club in the world. It has more than 2.3 million members and is one of the best social networking platforms for book lovers .

With a free account, you can add up to 200 books to your library and share them with other users. But it's in the other areas where LibraryThing can claim to be one of the best book review sites.

Naturally, there are ratings, user reviews, and tags. But be sure to click on the Zeitgeist tab at the top of the page. It contains masses of information, including the top books by rating, by the number of reviews, by authors, and loads more.

3. Book Riot

Book Riot is a blog. It publishes listicles on dozens of different topics, many of which review the best books in a certain genre. To give you an idea, some recent articles include Keeping Hoping Alive: 11 Thrilling YA Survival Stories and The Best Historical Fiction Books You’ve Never Heard Of .

Of course, there's also plenty of non-reading list content. If you have a general affinity for literature, Book Riot is definitely worth adding to the list of websites you browse every day.

Bookish is a site that all members of book clubs should know about. It helps you prep for your next meeting with discussion guides, book quizzes, and book games. There are even food and drink suggestions, as well as playlist recommendations.

But the site is more than just book club meetings. It also offers lots of editorial content. That comes in the form of author interviews, opinion essays, book reviews and recommendations, reading challenges, and giveaways.

Be sure to look at the Must-Reads section of the site regularly to get the latest book reviews. Also, it goes without saying that the people behind Bookish are book lovers, too. To get a glimpse of what they’re reading, check out their Staff Reads articles.

5. Booklist

6. Fantasy Book Review

Fantasy Book Review should be high on the list for anyone who is a fan of fantasy works. The book review site publishes reviews for both children's books and adults' books.

It has a section on the top fantasy books of all time and a continually updated list of must-read books for each year. You can also search through the recommended books by sub-genres such as Sword and Sorcery, Parallel Worlds, and Epic Fantasy.

7. LoveReading

LoveReading is one of the most popular book review sites in the UK, but American audiences will find it to be equally useful.

The site is divided into fiction and non-fiction works. In each area, it publishes weekly staff picks, books of the month, debuts of the month, ebooks of the month, audiobooks of the month, and the nationwide bestsellers. Each book on every list has a full review that you can read for free.

Make sure you also check out their Highlights tab to get book reviews for selected titles of the month. In Collections , you'll also find themed reading lists such as World War One Literature and Green Reads .

Kirkus has been involved in producing book reviews since the 1930s. This book review site looks at the week's bestselling books, and provides lengthy critiques for each one.

As you'd expect, you'll also find dozens of "best of" lists and individual book reviews across many categories and genres.

And while you're on the site, make sure you click on the Kirkus Prize section. You can look at all the past winners and finalists, complete with the accompanying reviews of their books.

Although Reddit is a social media site, you can use it to get book reviews of famous books, or almost any other book for that matter! Reddit has a Subreddit, r/books, that is dedicated to book reviews and reading lists.

The subreddit has weekly scheduled threads about a particular topic or genre. Anyone can then chip in with their opinions about which books are recommendable. Several new threads are published every day, with people discussing their latest discovery with an accompanying book rating or review.

You'll also discover a weekly recommendation thread. Recent threads have included subjects such as Favorite Books About Climate Science , Literature of Indigenous Peoples , and Books Set in the Desert . There’s also a weekly What are you Reading? discussion and frequent AMAs.

For more social media-like platforms, check out these must-have apps for book lovers .

10. YouTube

YouTube is not the type of place that immediately springs to mind when you think of the best book review sites online.

Nonetheless, there are several engaging YouTube channels that frequently offer opinions on books they've read. You’ll easily find book reviews of famous books here.

Some of the most notable book review YouTube channels include Better Than Food: Book Reviews , Little Book Owl , PolandBananasBooks , and Rincey Reads .

Amazon is probably one of your go-to site when you want to buy something. If you don’t mind used copies, it’s also one of the best websites to buy second-hand books .

Now, to get book reviews, just search and click on a title, then scroll down to see the ratings and what others who have bought the book are saying. It’s a quick way to have an overview of the book’s rating. If you spot the words Look Inside above the book cover, it means you get to preview the first few pages of the book, too!

Regardless of the praises or criticisms you have heard from other book review sites, reading a sample is the most direct way to help you gauge the content’s potential and see whether the author’s writing style suits your tastes.

12. StoryGraph

StoryGraph is another good book review site that's worth checking out. The book rating is determined by the site's large community of readers. Key in the title of a book you're interested in and click on it in StoryGraph's search results to have an overall view of its rating.

Each book review provides information on the moods and pacing of the story. It also indicates whether the tale is plot or character-driven, what readers feel about the extent of character development, how lovable the characters generally are, and the diversity of the cast.

13. London Review of Books

The London Review of Books is a magazine that covers a range of subjects such as culture, literature, and philosophy. Part of its content includes amazingly detailed book reviews. If you feel that most modern book reviews are too brief for your liking, the London Review of Books should suit you best.

You'll gain insight into the flow and themes of the story, as well as a more thorough picture of the events taking place in the book.

Read Book Reviews Before You Buy

The book review sites we've discussed will appeal to different types of readers. Some people will be more comfortable with the easy-to-interpret book rating systems; others will prefer extensive reviews written by experienced professionals.

Although it’s easy to be tempted by a gorgeous book cover, it’s always best to have a quick look at the book reviews before actually buying a copy. This way, you can save your money and spend it on the books that you’ll be proud to display on your shelves for a long time. And check out recommendations, as well, to help you find what's worth reading.

This team knows their SFF niches inside out, so their verdicts are very credible. Still, their reviews are quite friendly and personal — they discuss other related books and share their reading experiences to help you make your own reading choices.

7. Bookpage

best site for reviews websites

Bookpage features all kinds of genres: from children’s books to nonfiction, from the works of household names to debut authors, and so much more. They specialize in connecting authors who are publishing to readers who’d like to preview and put in their two cents. Readers can benefit most from NetGalley via their book recommendation site, Bookish , where the staff reviewers update you with their recent reads and in-depth thoughts on those reads. Along with that, Bookish also has book club kits, equipped with comprehension questions and discussion points, to help readers explore stories mindfully.

10. BookBub

While it’s very similar to Goodreads, BookBub focuses more on connecting readers to books that might suit them specifically — which is partly why you’ll see plenty of bargains and deals promoted on the site.

Because of this promotional value, BookBub has quite a strong author community. Diana Gabaldon and Gillian Flynn , for instance, are constantly recommending books on their accounts. So if you’d like to tag along with your favorite author, this is an excellent website to visit. The only drawback of BookBub is that they only have community reviews from users based in the US, and you have to sign up in order to read them.

Best Website Builder for 2024: Reviewed by Our Experts

Whether you're a small business owner, writer or consultant, artist, photographer, a website builder is out there for you to establish your online presence.

best site for reviews websites

If you have a business in this day and age, you need a website. That used to mean needing a professional coder to create one for you, but now the process has been simplified. You can build a professional website on your own with the help of services like Squarespace ,  Wix  and  Weebly . These companies can help you build a sleek site that can either just have the basic features, or even add some more features like email marketing and e-commerce.

Choosing the best website builder depends on your specific needs. There are many options, so it can be a lot of work to comb through all the free providers for a simple website and all of the e-commerce website builders if you want a more sophisticated business website. The complexity and growth of the website building industry means you have more choices than ever before and you can easily find the best website builder tailored to your wants and needs.

A few favorites have indeed emerged, and those are usually a good place to start, but even the front-runners aren't ideally suited for every scenario. To simplify it, we've laid out all the information you need to make a good decision on the best website builder so that you can get to the fun part of designing your own professional website for yourself or your small business. We considered whether the builder offers a solid customization option, e-commerce tools, marketing tools and an SEO tool. We also looked at the company's customer support quality and e-commerce functionality.

Best website builders compared

*The starting price doesn't include cheaper plans if they are ad-supported. Some vendors offer free domain hosting for the first year on some plans as well.

To compile this list, we researched the plans, prices and features of over 12 different website builders and scoured reviews from several sites (including PCMag , Wirecutter , SiteBuilderReport , WebsiteToolTester , WPBeginner and more) to see where there might be any consensus. We also surveyed the CNET staff and ultimately spent time building some test sites using the tools below (if we weren't already members). We paid particular attention to the categories that not only differentiate one site from another, but that actually matter to business owners, artists and creators such as SEO features, creative cloud, mobile-friendly website builders, available plugins, live chat options, e-commerce features, pricing plan and customer support.

If you're still not sure which direction to go with your web builder by the end of this list, we've included a guide at the bottom, including key questions you should be asking yourself as you start your online venture. Finally, if you already have a basic website and just need a host or you're interested in building a self-hosted WordPress site, check out our list of best web hosting services and our list of the best WordPress hosting services .

Best website builders of 2024

best site for reviews websites

Best website builder overall

Wix is the clear front-runner in the race for website builder dominance. It's the biggest player with over 8 million live websites according to Built With . This popular website builder also boasts the greatest quantity of tools, capabilities, and freedom.

Wix covers the full ease-of-use spectrum by offering an AI-fueled automatic website creator on one end ("Wix ADI") that requires minimal effort from the user, all the way to Velo by Wix, an open development platform for advanced applications like Javascript, databases and data-driven dynamic pages. To maximize the experience, we do recommend choosing one lane (e.g., Wix ADI, specific templates or design-from-scratch), since it can be difficult to maintain consistency across your landing page & website design if, for example, you start with a template but then decide you want to totally customize it.

Like many competitors in this space, Wix offers a basic free website builder plan that lets website owners create a free website starter site with ads. If you like what you see with the free website builder, you can spend up for a premium, ad-free site. Pricing falls within industry standards with a  $17 per month  "Light" plan that covers most needs for a personal website. If you need an e-commerce website builder for your store, Wix offers a  $36 per month  "Business" e-commerce website plan for your online store. Those prices only include a free domain for one year, so you'll need to account for that  separately beyond the first year. If you're interested in stats and analytics, Wix has limited analytics tools available for all plans above the light plan. If you only need the basic plan, you can always get a Google Analytics paid plan in addition to your Wix site.

Despite being the clear favorite among most reviewers, Wix does have a few drawbacks. Wix was one of the few builders that has data limitations for each of its plan tiers, so if you want to upload endless photos and videos, or expect a large amount of monthly visitors to your site, make sure you do the math before choosing a plan. It's also worth noting that if you choose to use Wix for free there will be a banner at the top of your site promoting Wix.

Also, the editor's freedom and range of options can be overwhelming for folks who don't have the time or inclination to make lots of little decisions and the web design flexibility means you'll need to be more hands-on with the format and layout, as opposed to more structured or limited editors where you can't draw too far outside the lines.

Squarespace

Best prepackaged design.

Squarespace strikes us as being the cool kid in high school: flashy and hip on the surface but lacking substance underneath. We found it to be in between Wix and Weebly in terms of ease of use, although it did get consistently positive marks from reviewers for the quality of the design options. Where we think it really might shine is for small- to medium-sized businesses who want a nicely designed page and room for e-commerce growth with lower transaction fees.

The Squarespace editor isn't as intuitive as Wix and Weebly, requiring a little bit of work until you get the hang of it. It has a fair amount of add-ons, website templates and tools, and the universal style editor and strong photo editing are helpful. The responsive website editor means that your site will always look good on a mobile device, but you can only make mobile-specific edits on areas of your page that use their Fluid Engine feature. We also found consistently high marks for helpful and responsive customer support, which should put business owners' minds at ease.

Squarespace starts off with a $25-a-month Personal plan , which includes unlimited storage, bandwidth and one year of a free domain if you pay annually ($16/month), and offers a $36 Business website plan that includes unlimited contributors, one year of a free Google Workspace account, and e-commerce store builder capabilities. If you go for a "Commerce" plan, you can choose between a $40-a-month basic or $72-a-month advanced plan ($28 or $52/month with annual pay). The advanced plan includes a few final touches like abandoned shopping cart recovery and subscription products. It's important to note that the basic commerce plan , while maybe slightly above the market rate for an e-commerce site, comes with no transaction fees. Depending on your sales volume on a given month, those savings for our online store could really add up.

Overall, Squarespace's website is a good analog for what you get with its products: clean, professional and inviting design, but without the layers of design power or freedom you get from other builders.

best site for reviews websites

Easiest to use

Weebly flies under the radar relative to Wix with over 800,000 live websites , but offers some excellent options depending on your needs. If you want a simple and easy-to-use do-it-yourself website editor, plus a large site (more than 25 to 30 pages), unlimited storage, site portability feature and affordable (yet powerful) online store capabilities, Weebly may be a good fit.

The editor is one of the easiest website builder options to use and the low learning curve still nets great-looking sites. That ease of use means the editor is more limited in terms of add-ons and design flexibility and it doesn't have the range of options or mobile customization that a builder like Wix has. Still, in our testing, we never came to a point where we found those constraints to be limiting. For a high-octane web designer, it could come up.

Weebly's prices are similar to competitors like Wix or Squarespace, but its free plan option is one of the most generous among free website builders and for just $10 a month you can get up and running with your own domain name (albeit with Weebly ads). Its $12 per month plan will give you an ad-free site with analytics and commerce capabilities, while the $26 plan gets you more store tools, like PayPal payment, item reviews, and abandoned cart emails.

Weebly is a good option for those who may be more limited in terms of their time investment and its commerce options outshine competitors like Wix and Squarespace. For those who are wary of committing to a website builder knowing that you won't be able to pick up and leave later on, Weebly also offers the ability to download site files so you can move to another host, a rarity in the site builder landscape.

Best for building a customized experience

Duda is a smaller player compared to the other builders above with around 900,000 live websites and it focuses on a specific market segment: designers and design agencies. It caters to individuals and groups that make up a lot of sites, but with a powerful and easy-to-use builder and many differentiated offerings, it's emerged as a good option for anyone looking to develop an online presence.

Duda's builder boasts several features that set it apart, including detailed data analytics (e.g. advanced metrics like form submissions, time on page and bounce rate) and user personalization so you can easily display specific messages or offers to users based on the time of day, their location or their browsing history. It's also known for its multilanguage support and a free e-commerce add-on that allows you to sell up to 10 products.

Duda's pricing is fairly close to its main competitors, Wix and Weebly, starting at $19 per month for the Basic plan. At $29 , you can add up to three additional team members to your site (instead of only one with Basic), add dynamic pages, access client management tools, plus get AI assistance for content and SEO. Its "Agency" plan at $52 per month is geared toward web designers who are building pages for multiple clients and includes four websites and the ability to download site files for portability. With "White Label" at $149 per month you can make your sites completely using their White Label website builder . This comes with a custom domain, branding options and access to the white-labeled support portal. If none of these fit what you're looking for, there's also the option to contact them for a custom plan.

Duda is a little expensive, but it fills some of the voids that the main players have like analytics, multilingual capabilities, and better personalization.

best site for reviews websites

Best for basic, no-frills websites

GoDaddy is best known for its custom domain names and web hosting services, so it makes sense that it also offers website builder software. The name is a mouthful -- "Websites + Marketing" -- but it's a similar templatized experience like the other options on this list, designed to get a basic site up and running in under an hour.

The free tier includes such niceties as email and social media marketing, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Square and Stripe payments and an SSL certificate. The  $11 monthly plan is straight-up basic; the $15 premium plan tacks on extended support for appointments and social ad support and its  $21 per month commerce plan is for online store capabilities, including some impressive product listing and shipping options for your store. These prices reflect the standard monthly costs, but new users can save a bit each month by opting for an annual term.

Even though GoDaddy is better known as a domain seller, a domain isn't included in those prices -- you'll need to add that separately. All in all, GoDaddy's current website creator is a nice start. If you choose to start with the free tier, there's no timer on your experience, so you can take your time kicking the tires to see if GoDaddy is right for you.

Best for writers and bloggers

When most people talk about WordPress, they're usually referring to the free open-source software available through WordPress.org. That's very powerful, but it takes some time to learn and still requires that you find a website host and domain name. If you're interested in going the advanced route of WordPress.org, we recommend you check out a tutorial or guide such as those you can find on WPBeginner or ToolTester to learn how it works.

The WordPress.com website builder is something else. It's similar to the other builders listed above and is primarily geared toward bloggers and writers. The WordPress website editor is fairly limited compared to other services but is easy to set up and has everything you need for blogging. We should also note that it's not an intuitive drag-and-drop website builder like Wix or Weebly and to use drag-and-drop you will need to get a plugin that adds it.

While there is a free option , it's a pretty bare-bones package offering only 1GB of storage. For  $25 or $45 per month , the "Creator" and "Entrepreneur" plans respectively bump storage up to 50GB of storage. They also give you access to a slew of helpful features including over 50,000 plug-ins like forms and calendars, safety features like one-click restores and real-time backup, expert support and the ability to sell products with WooCommerce.

Between these levels are the "Starter" and "Explorer" plans. The $4 a month "Starter" plan removes ads and adds SSL. You also get email support for your site. With "Explorer" you pay $8 per month and it adds 4K videos and automatic social media shares, and you can see your data with advanced stats and the activity log for your page. Your support options are also improved with live chat availability. Personalization comes into play at this level to with unlimited premium themes and style customization.

Overall, WordPress caters to bloggers who don't want or need to spend a lot of time on website design, but it feels very limited for most other use cases. That said, anyone who's looking for more robust off-the-shelf CMS (content management systems) options should consider Joomla and Drupal . Both are arguably less user-friendly than WordPress but offer more customization options. At least one CNET editor also felt that Drupal and Joomla also offered faster page loading speeds.

best site for reviews websites

Best for basic e-commerce

If Wix is the clear favorite for most website-building needs, Shopify fills that role for an e-commerce store. The platform offers an easy and user-friendly way to get an e-commerce website store up and running online, and it supports business owners throughout the process with their e-commerce tools. Shopify is a safe place to start for most "e-tailers," although similar to Wix, that doesn't mean it's perfect for every scenario.

Like most other commerce-focused builders, Shopify's platform is geared toward your product and sales details. For those without a ton of experience setting up a retail operation, Shopify's process ensures you won't miss an important step as it guides you through inventory, customer information and tax and shipping rates. If you still have a question, Shopify offers 24-7 phone and chat support and an active online community forum . There is an AI bot to help track down the appropriate resources for your problem, and if they aren't the right match, then it will provide support options.

Given that its user base is fairly defined, Shopify doesn't offer a plethora of plan options, and its prices come in above the market average. The "Basic" plan is $39 a month and covers most of the basic needs for an online store, while the $105 a month "Shopify" plan offers more staff accounts as well as shipping discounts and insurance. From our perspective, it was hard to rationalize the $66 jump from basic to Shopify, but if you factor in the reduced transaction fees and shipping discounts, it might make sense. If you're running a bigger operation, they also offer a $ 399-a-month  plan.

The main drawback of Shopify is probably its pricing model. If you want the support, guidance and a builder that will take care of most of the technical details, the extra costs are worth it. The many apps available are enticing, but can also add up if you're using those custom apps that cost extra. If after considering the different e-commerce features you're still on the fence, we recommend you calculate the total cost of additional add-ons and transaction fees based on your sales, and then compare with competitors like BigCommerce , which offers more product variants and combinations and lower fees.

best site for reviews websites

BigCommerce

Best for bigger stores.

BigCommerce lives up to its name -- it's best for medium- to large-scale online stores that can cash in on the lack of added transaction fees and unlimited product variants. The store site builder might not be quite as easy to use as Shopify's, but the amount of time you spend getting used to it could save you a lot of money down the road.

The editor has a lot of features and flexibility when you're getting set up, but similar to Wix, that can be too much for newcomers. If you have a little experience, those features and tools -- like product variants and tax rates -- will probably come in handy as you grow or if you're already at scale.

BigCommerce's price tiers are identical to Shopify's at $39 (Standard) , $105 (Plus) and $399 (Pro) , but what you get at each level differs. Even the lowest BigCommerce plan gives its clients unlimited users, unlimited bandwidth and storage, unlimited products and no added transaction fees . You can even link your e-commerce site to eBay, Amazon, and Walmart. Where the pricing gets a little tricky is with the sales thresholds: The Standard plan only supports annual sales of less than $50,000, while Plus supports up to $180,000 and Pro up to $400,000. Basically, you save a lot of money on transaction fees the more sales you rack up, but if you have enough sales, you have to upgrade to the next plan tier.

As with all the online store builders, it'll be worth it to do a little math based on your product inventory and expected sales. No transaction fees strike us as a major deal-maker depending on your size, so if you're a bigger operation, take advantage of the 15-day trial and give BigCommerce a shot.

How to choose the best website builder

wix-website-price-plans.jpg

Given the wealth of options and the fact that many website builders don't allow you to pick up and move later on, it's important to enter the fray with a clear idea of what you need. By first establishing your priorities and direction, it will be easier to find a match for the best website builder and avoid buyer's remorse down the road.

In terms of pricing, most builders offer two to four different price tiers, each with a different set of features. This can make comparing services difficult since they don't make it easy to evaluate side-by-side, but that's a big reason why we've created this handy guide.

Generally speaking, you can get a good individual website built for around $10 to $20 a month with an annual subscription. Most e-commerce plans range between $25 to $35 per month and if you need an enterprise-style plan with multiple editors and VIP-level support, prices can go up to $400 per month for a premium plan.

Storage and bandwidth are usually unlimited, but there are exceptions like Wix, which scales its storage capacity according to the plan tier. Even its lowest tier plan has a decent amount (2GB of storage and unlimited bandwidth).

After the big questions like price and storage, finding the best website builder all comes down to what you're looking for. Below are some guiding questions to help ensure you're ready to shop like an expert and find the best website builder for your needs.

What is the purpose of your site?

screen-shot-2019-05-14-at-3-10-23-pm

Your first step should be to determine the primary goal of your web presence. Do you want to sell a product? Attract potential customers for your services? Build a portfolio page?

By first establishing your raison d'etre, you'll be able to prioritize the tools, plugins and capabilities you want in your builder and not get pulled off track by a fancy add-on that isn't actually helping you achieve your goal. If you're primarily interested in racking up sales, start by looking at e-commerce specialists, like Shopify and BigCommerce. If you're a photographer or web designer who wants a beautiful website or portfolio website, Wix and Squarespace are good places to start. Wix might edge Squarespace if you want more control over the design, while Squarespace might be better if you just want a stylish frame for your work.

If you just want something easy to use, Weebly and GoDaddy both offer intuitive builders, with Weebly offering more features and design finesse, while GoDaddy is much simpler and more limited. If you're setting up a site or store and you want to present a customized experience to users, or if you have something specific in mind for the mobile version of your site, Duda offers the most customization capabilities. If you need both website building and hosting from one provider, then Webflow is the best and no coding knowledge is required for web design. If you're a wordsmith who can't be bothered by design decisions and fancy editors, WordPress can help you get your blog up and offers good ways to reach your readers.

How much time do you want to invest in building your website?

This obviously will vary depending on a number of factors, not the least of which is how clear of a design vision you have and whether you have experience building a website. That being said, each site builder has pros and cons when it comes to the level of usability or ease of use based on the features, flexibility and intuitive design of the editing interface. On one end of the spectrum, you have a builder like Wix, which is very easy to use but also comprehensive -- the sheer number of options and tools makes it hard to whip up a site quickly. On the other end, you have a builder like WordPress or GoDaddy, each of which doesn't provide you with a ton of options when building your pages.

Most people will want to devote enough time to their site that it serves its purpose of representing you online in a good light, so we generally recommend you take the time to learn your editor and take advantage of the many options available.

How much design control do you want?

screen-shot-2019-05-14-at-3-11-53-pm

Wix offers a pretty comprehensive suite of site editing tools.

This goes hand-in-hand with time investment, since the more control you have, the more choices you have to make. There are builders like Squarespace that have a fairly rigid design structure, but still let you customize fonts, colors and content. On the other end of the spectrum, you have a site like Wix, which lets you place objects anywhere on your site (at your own risk!), or Duda, which allows you to create custom user experiences based on browsing history.

How big is your site?

Certain editors are more geared toward large site structures (40-plus pages) than others, so it's important to know whether you will have a ton of pages and sections, or whether it's more in the realm of a glamorized digital business card or fancy work portfolio.

The number of navigation levels, for example (which you can think of like file folders (or Inception): a page within a directory within another directory would represent three levels of navigation), can be an important consideration. Most pages probably use two levels -- sections and the pages within each section, but online stores and other types of sites might need more. Weebly and BigCommerce are probably the best examples of builders that support large site structures, while Squarespace and Wix limit you to two levels of navigation.

How important is e-commerce?

screen-shot-2019-05-14-at-3-35-11-pm

Every builder we researched has an e-commerce option available, but that doesn't mean that they're all up to the task. A site like WordPress isn't really what you want if your plan is to sell products online, while a site like Shopify or BigCommerce is expressly focused on online sales and has lots of e-commerce features. If you really just want to have a clean and easy-to-use online storefront, one of the dedicated e-commerce builders makes the most sense, but if it's more of an ancillary service or simply nice to have, you can go with the builder that feels the best and sign up for its e-commerce option. There are even builders like Duda, which allow you to sell up to 10 products for free using another plan.

How big is your sales operation?

screen-shot-2019-05-14-at-3-38-32-pm

Many website builders support Square's payment solutions.

Transaction fees: While we're not small business owners, we do like math and this variable struck us as particularly important. If you sell $10,000 of products in a month with a 3% vendor processing fee, you're spending an extra $300 every month. If you're paying your website host an extra 1% to 3%, that's another $100 to $300. Those numbers greatly eclipse the monthly rate you're paying and add up even more if you're selling significantly more. Before you choose a builder, make sure you read the fine print about transaction fees.

Many builders don't charge on top of the Square or PayPal rate (usually 3%), but some do. Shopify charges extra if you don't use Shopify Payments, but if you do use its services, you can get a rate below 3%. Then there are sites like BigCommerce, which doesn't charge extra but has sales limits for each plan.

We know you're a smart and savvy business owner who pays close attention to the books, but we thought it would still help to remind you to do the math before signing up.

How flexible do you want to be with the host?

As we mentioned at the top, many builders lock you into their hosting service, but not all. If you're afraid of commitment or think you might want to switch as your business or services evolve, go with a service like Weebly or Duda that allows you to download your website files for easy use on another host.

The other big factor here is the free trial period. The industry standard is around 14 days, but some go up to a month. Others don't have a trial period but will give you your money back within 30 days if you're not happy.

10 Best Free Website Hosting Services to Consider in 2024

John Hughes

Is free website hosting any good? Well, “free” is always good but not always worth it in the long run. Let me explain:

It is fine for temporary projects or hobbies. However, for more serious, long-term websites, affordable or premium web hosting services are recommended. These services often provide better reliability, security, and support, making them a worthy investment for your online presence.

For example, Bluehost is our recommended self-hosted website server. If you check them out through our link , you’ll unlock a special discounted price of $2.75 / month vs the $3.75 standard entry-level price. You also get a free domain name bundled in.

Alternatively, if what you want is not just free hosting on its own, but a whole free website, then consider an all-in-one solution like Wix . It offers both hosting and a website builder in one place. Though a free plan is available, you can also test their premium plans risk-free with a 14-day money-back guarantee.

Want the full story? Read on for a detailed comparison of the best free website hosting options on the market. We present the pros and cons of each one, plus show you in which scenarios going with free website hosting might be a good idea.

As you may already know, Wix is not a free website hosting platform per se. However, we’re featuring it here for those of you who are not really looking for free hosting on its own, but rather for a possibility to launch a whole website from scratch for free. This is where Wix really delivers.

Wix is an all-in-one solution for building a website. It covers everything from hosting, domain, to the website platform itself all within a single dashboard that’s also easy to use. In other words, you don’t need to be familiar with coding to create your own site on Wix.

Wix does indeed come with a free plan, which means that you can launch a simple site as a test and experiment with some of Wix’s features. Then if you want to, you have the option to upgrade to one of their premium tiers. On that free plan, you get:

  • Wix.com subdomain
  • Beautiful templates
  • 500 MB disk space
  • 500 MB bandwidth
  • Global content delivery network
  • Free SSL and security monitoring
  • Knowledge base and customer support
  • Decent load times

Just like most of the free web hosting providers, Wix places their own ads on free plan sites. You can only connect a Wix subdomain and would have to move to a paid plan for connecting a custom domain.

Note; the eCommerce functionality is not available in the free version. However, you can still set up things like bookings, events, and forums , and fill in your site with SEO-friendly content with just a few clicks.

10. FreeWebHostingArea

FreeWebHostingArea homepage

FreeWebHostingArea is a volunteer-maintained free hosting service. It offers:

  • 1.5 GB disk space
  • Unmetered traffic
  • MySQL databases
  • Free email support

To use FreeWebHostingArea, your free site must have at least one visitor per month. It can be deleted due to inactivity if you drop below this metric. This service also prohibits private projects, APIs, and password-protected websites.

FreeWebHostingArea provides backups for all hosting accounts, although it’s recommended you create your own as well. You can bring a domain or purchase one through the provider’s own service.

While your free web hosting platform might not be perfect, it can be a viable option in some scenarios. However, finding a quality provider that delivers on its promises is no easy task.

In this article, we shared our opinions on the best free website hosting options available in 2024. You have nothing to lose by giving one a try. Our top pick in the category of best free web hosting is 000WebHost for its live chat support and easy WordPress installation.

The best u.s. airlines in 2024—according to a new report.

The Best airlines in the U.S. is Alaska, according to a new study.

When you’re looking for flights, you’re probably most loyal to the airline that you have status with or that has a hub in your city—most often, they’re one and the same. Or, you’re looking for the best flight deals, which should be a little bit easier to come by this spring as flight costs are down 7% year-over-year. But safety, comfort and other factors are also top of mind when it comes to booking flights, and a new study from WalletHub, a personal finance company, took those considerations and other metrics into consideration to determine the best U.S. airlines of 2024 .

Alaska Airlines is the top U.S. airline, according to the report, which used 13 metrics to evaluate the nine largest carriers in the country, plus a regional carrier.

This year’s list is a shakeup from the previous two years, as Alaska has dethroned Delta as the top airline. Delta was WalletHub’s top airline in 2022 and 2023. But Alaska has been previously ranked as the best airline, taking the top spot on WalletHub’s list from 2017 to 2019 and again in 2021.

For its new ranking, WalletHub examined data from 2023. In January 2024, a door plug blew out mid-flight on a Boeing 737 Max, forcing Alaska Airlines to ground a flight. While no one was seriously physically injured, the incident did prompt serious safety concerns over Boeing’s manufacturing processes and the schedule of airlines safety checks.

Boeing paid Alaska Airlines $160 million , the airline announced this month, to compensate for revenue lost from the incident. The Federal Aviation Administration also launched an investigation into Boeing’s safety practices.

Last week, a software issue prompted the FAA to issue a ground stop on Alaska Airlines flights, though that issue has been resolved.

Trump ally warned ex-president about keeping classified docs—over a year before indictment, fbi filing says, disney faces backlash over theme park disability access changes.

Alaska Airlines is ranked the No. 1 airline in the U.S. by WalletHub.

A budget carrier, Spirit Airlines, cracked the top 3 and was also named the safest airline. Meanwhile, Delta led in categories like reliability and comfort.

How Was The Best U.S. Airline Determined?

For its rankings, WalletHub considered factors like reliability, comfort, affordability, and safety. That’s to say the analysts considered which airlines had the lowest rates of delays and cancellations, which airlines offer the most leg room and in-flight perks like free wifi, the price of flights, and safety incidents per 100,000 flights.

The analysts used data from the U.S. Department of Transportation. When it comes to things like flight cancellations and delays, the team collected information about each airline, but then tossed out any disruptions that were caused by weather, security, or National Aviation System-related cancellations as they’re not specific to any one carrier.

Categories were also weighted differently, with baggage and departures accounting for 50 points, safety counting for 35 points, and in-flight comfort counting for 15 points. Within each category, points were assigned — i.e. in the comfort category, leg room got a max score of 2 points.

Ahead, we dive into the ratings from WalletHub, which includes best overall, most comfortable , safest, and the most budget-friendly.

‘Cabaret’ Review: What Good Is Screaming Alone in Your Room?

Eddie Redmayne and Gayle Rankin star in a buzzy Broadway revival that rips the skin off the 1966 musical.

  • Share full article

In a scene from the production, revelers are grouped together and dancing.

By Jesse Green

Just east of its marquee, the August Wilson Theater abuts an alley you probably didn’t notice when last you were there, perhaps to see “Funny Girl,” its previous tenant. Why would you? Where the trash goes is not usually part of the Broadway experience.

But it is for the latest revival of “Cabaret,” which opened at the Wilson on Sunday. Audience members are herded into that alley, past the garbage, down some halls, up some stairs and through a fringed curtain to a dimly lit lounge. (There’s a separate entrance for those with mobility issues.) Along the way, greeters offer free shots of cherry schnapps that taste, I’m reliably told, like cough syrup cut with paint thinner.

Too often I thought the same of the show itself.

But the show comes later. First, starting 75 minutes beforehand, you can experience the ambience of the various bars that constitute the so-called Kit Kat Club, branded in honor of the fictional Berlin cabaret where much of the musical takes place. Also meant to get you in the mood for a story set mostly in 1930, on the edge of economic and spiritual disaster, are some moody George Grosz-like paintings commissioned from Jonathan Lyndon Chase . (One is called “Dancing, Holiday Before Doom.”) The $9 thimbleful of potato chips is presumably a nod to the period’s hyperinflation.

This all seemed like throat clearing to me, as did the complete reconfiguration of the auditorium itself, which is now arranged like a large supper club or a small stadium. (The scenic, costume and theater design are the jaw-dropping work of Tom Scutt.) The only relevant purpose I can see for this conceptual doodling, however well carried out, is to give the fifth Broadway incarnation of the 1966 show a distinctive profile. It certainly does that.

The problem for me is that “Cabaret” has a distinctive profile already. The extreme one offered here frequently defaces it.

Let me quickly add that Rebecca Frecknall’s production , first seen in London , has many fine and entertaining moments. Some feature its West End star Eddie Redmayne, as the macabre emcee of the Kit Kat Club (and quite likely your nightmares). Some come from its new New York cast, including Gayle Rankin (as the decadent would-be chanteuse Sally Bowles) and Bebe Neuwirth and Steven Skybell (dignified and wrenching as an older couple). Others arise from Frecknall’s staging itself, which is spectacular when in additive mode, illuminating the classic score by John Kander and Fred Ebb, and the amazingly sturdy book by Joe Masteroff.

But too often a misguided attempt to resuscitate the show breaks its ribs.

The conception of Sally is especially alarming. As written — and as introduced in the play and stories the musical is based on — she is a creature of blithe insouciance if not talent, an English good-time gal flitting from brute to brute in Berlin while hoping to become a star. Her first number, “Don’t Tell Mama,” is a lively Charleston with winking lyrics (“You can tell my brother, that ain’t grim/Cause if he squeals on me I’ll squeal on him”) that make the Kit Kat Club audience, and the Broadway one too, complicit in her naughtiness.

Instead, Frecknall gives us a Sally made up to look like she’s recently been assaulted or released from an asylum, who dances like a wounded bird, stretches each syllable to the breaking point and shrieks the song instead of singing it. (Goodbye, Charleston; hello, dirge.) If Rankin doesn’t sound good in the number, nor later in “Mein Herr,” interpolated from the 1972 film, she’s not trying to. Like the cough syrup-paint thinner concoction, she’s meant to be taken medicinally and poisonously in this production, projecting instead of concealing Sally’s turmoil.

That’s inside-out. The point of Sally, and of “Cabaret” more generally, is to dramatize the danger of disengagement from reality, not to fetishize it.

The guts-first problem also distorts Redmayne’s Emcee, but at least that character was always intended as allegorical. He is the host to anything, the amoral shape-shifter, becoming whatever he must to get by. Here, he begins as a kind of marionette in a leather skirt and tiny party hat, hiccupping his way through “Willkommen.” Later he effectively incarnates himself as a creepy clown, an undead skeleton, Sally’s twin and a glossy Nazi.

Having seen Frecknall’s riveting production of “Sanctuary City,” a play about undocumented immigrants by Martyna Majok , I’m not surprised that her “Cabaret” finds a surer footing in the “book” scenes. These are the ones that take place in the real Berlin, not the metaphorical one of the Kit Kat Club. She is extraordinarily good when she starts with the naturalistic surface of behavior, letting the mise en scène and the lighting (excellent, by Isabella Byrd) suggest the rest.

And naturalism is what you find at the boardinghouse run by Fräulein Schneider (Neuwirth), a woman who has learned to keep her nose down to keep safe. Her tenants include a Jewish fruiterer, Herr Schultz (Skybell); a prostitute, Fräulein Kost (Natascia Diaz); and Clifford Bradshaw (Ato Blankson-Wood), an American writer come to Berlin in search of inspiration. Soon Sally shows up to provide it, having talked her way into Cliff’s life and bed despite being little more than a stranger. Also, despite Cliff’s romantic ambivalence; over the years, the character has had his sexuality revamped more times than a clownfish.

The Schneider-Shultz romance is sweet and sad; neither character is called upon to shriek. And Rankin excels in Sally’s scenes with Cliff, her wry, frank and hopeful personality back in place. The songs that emerge from the boardinghouse dramas are not ransacked as psychiatric case studies but are rather given room to let comment proceed naturally from real entertainment. Rankin’s “Maybe This Time,” with no slathered-on histrionics, is riveting. It turns out she can properly sing.

The interface between the naturalism and the expressionism does make for some weird moments: Herr Schultz, courtly in a topcoat, must hug Sally goodbye in her bra. But letting the styles mix also brings out the production’s most haunting imagery. The intrusion of the Nazi threat into the story is especially well handled: first a gorgeously sung and thus chilling version of “Tomorrow Belongs to Me,” then the swastika and then — well, I don’t want to give away how Frecknall stages the scene in which Schultz’s fruit shop is vandalized.

That so many of these moments arise from faithful attention to the original material should be no surprise. “Cabaret” hasn’t lasted this long for nothing. Created at the tail end of Broadway’s Golden Age, it benefited from the tradition of meticulous craftsmanship that preceded it while anticipating the era of conceptual stagings that followed.

All this is baked into the book, and especially the score, which I trust I admire not merely because I worked on a Kander and Ebb show 40 years ago. That the lyrics rhyme perfectly is a given with Ebb; more important, they are always the right words to rhyme. (Listen, in the title song, for the widely spaced triplet of “room,” “broom” and, uh-oh, “tomb.”) And Kander’s music, remixing period jazz, Kurt Weill and Broadway exuberance, never oversteps the milieu or outpaces the characters even as it pushes them toward their full and sometimes manic expression.

When this new “Cabaret” follows that template, it achieves more than the buzz of chic architecture and louche dancing. (The choreography is by Julia Cheng.) Seducing us and then repelling us — in that order — it dramatizes why we flock to such things in the first place, whether at the Kit Kat Club or the August Wilson Theater. We hope, at our risk, to forget that, outside, “life is disappointing,” as the Emcee tells us. We want to unsee the trash.

Cabaret At the August Wilson Theater, Manhattan; kitkat.club . Running time: 2 hours 45 minutes, with an optional preshow.
