Where to Find Help Writing Your Resume

Where to Find Resume Writing Help

Free online resume resources, american job centers, careeronestop resume guide, state resources for resume writing help, college career offices, public libraries, professional resume services, family, personal, and professional contacts.

If you're job hunting, few things are more important than a properly formatted, well-thought-out resume. Writing a resume can be a daunting task because you need to make sure you include all necessary information while keeping the document to a manageable size.

If you haven’t written a resume before, or haven’t updated yours in quite a while, getting started can be a challenge, but there are resources available that will assist you in writing an interview-winning resume for your job search.

Even if you've worked hard to write your resume, it’s helpful to have it reviewed by an objective and experienced professional.

There are numerous options available for getting help with your resume to ensure that the final draft will be looked at by prospective employers. You may be excellent at your job with the credentials to prove it, but if your resume doesn't shine, you may not be considered for the job.

Here’s a variety of resources you can use when you need help creating or updating your resume, so it’s comprehensive and competitive.

You may be able to write your resume yourself, using free online resources. At the least, you can create a draft that will help you get the process started. Our step-by-step guide for  how to write a resume  will walk you through the process, including choosing a type of resume, what to include, what to leave off, fonts, formatting, and templates and examples.

Many leading job sites have free online resume builders. Here’s a selection to try:

  • CakeResume: The Resume to Land Your Dream Job
  • Indeed: Easy and Free Online Resume Builder
  • Jobscan: Free Resume Builder ATS-Approved
  • Resume.com: Build a Professional Resume for Free

There are many other sites with online resume builders , but not all are actually free to use. Some resume sites charge for premium access, templates, downloads, and other resources.

Before you use an online resume builder, read the fine print to be sure you can actually save and download the resume you created for free. Some sites let you create a resume, but then charge you to access it.

American Job Centers offer in-person and virtual job search assistance at locations around the country. Use CareerOneStop’s  American Job Center Finder  to find local assistance.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s CareerOneStop site has a  Resume Guide  that includes a guide for what to include in your resume, templates and samples, and tips for writing and formatting your resume.

Most state department of labor websites offers free resume writing services for employees, the unemployed, those returning to the workplace, and military veterans. Local government websites will likely also offer sample resumes, sample cover letters, interview tips, and other pertinent information helpful for your job search.

Some department of labor offices offer virtual workshops you can attend to get help with writing your resume and with your job search. Check with your  state labor department  to see what’s available in your location.

If you're a college student (or alumnus) the career services office at your school or alma mater may be able to help you write your resume or provide you with useful feedback. The staff in a career office has a lot of experience helping professionals, as well as recent graduates, and they know how to polish a resume to make it stand out.

They are also familiar with hiring managers, how managers scan resumes, and the resume software used by employers. These career counselors can also provide guidance regarding the best way to format your resume and the best keywords to use to set you apart from the competition.

Many libraries offer programs and workshops for job seekers, as well as resume writing help and computer access. Check your local library to learn about what assistance is available in your location.

Use  CareerOneStop’s Library Finder  to find libraries and contact information so you can check on available services.

It may not seem worth it to spend money on a resume service, especially if you are unemployed and on a tight budget, but your resume is your first impression before you even get the interview. For a fee,  professional resume writing services  will either write your resume for you or edit the one you have.

Compose a draft of your resume and seek feedback from family members, friends, college alumni, and other professionals who have experience screening job candidates.

An added benefit of this strategy is that your contacts might develop an appreciation of your assets as a prospective employee and refer you for jobs.

Need Help with Your Resume? Here’s What to Do!

Writing a professional resume is the first step to landing a good job. Check out a list of available resume help options at your disposal!

Steven L.

Your resume is a representation of your professional skills, knowledge, and experience.

Writing a professional resume is often the first step to landing a good job, so you must do it carefully and with skill.

But you already knew that.

The real reason you’re here is that you need help writing your resume. Perhaps you’re aiming for a new job, or looking to score a promotion?

Whatever the reason, this article will show you what kind of resume help you can get to write a successful resume.

If you want to build a winning resume, there are five options available to you:

  • Create it yourself
  • Use a resume review website
  • Use an online resume builder
  • Pay a resume writing coach
  • Hire a professional resume writer

The option you go with is up to you, of course, but this article will assist you in making the best decision for your work situation and particular career goals.

You’ll learn more details about each resume writing option, including how it works and its pros and cons.

1. Go It Alone

There are many reasons why someone might choose to write their own resume.

If you’re on a tight budget, you may want to test your resume writing skills before spending any money on your job search.

Recent grads and entry-level professionals often fall into this category.

On the other hand, you may already have strong writing skills and resume know-how that makes you confident enough to create your own resume from scratch.

However, if you’re opting to create a resume by yourself, you must ensure that your writing meets the standards of a professional resume. To do this, you can seek guidance from career blogs on resume writing and even use samples or free templates you find online.

Writing your resume by yourself has a couple of benefits. For one, your work experience is written by someone with firsthand experience: you. What’s more, it’s free!

If you write your resume yourself, you might get “just so so” results at best. Also, it’s likely to take a considerable amount of your time, which means time away from your job search efforts.

2. Use a Resume Review Site

As its name implies, a resume review site is a website that helps you assess your resume and can even give you tips on how to improve it.

Note that there are two types of resume review sites. There are the free ones, and there are those that charge you for their resume review service.

The process usually involves uploading your resume to a website, then receiving feedback in the form of scores or narratives. Feedback can be instant (which usually means it’s automated) or received within a few days.

You can then take the suggestions to improve your resume.

We suggest looking for a service with a review provided by a human. In other words, you don’t want one that provides an automated (and often generic) machine-generated review.

One benefit of using resume review sites is that most, if not all of them, have online reviews available for you to check before using them. In addition, the cost of getting your resume reviewed is usually inexpensive or even free.

You will be making the changes to the resume on your own. And often, free resume reviews are a sales tactic for the website. After using their site, you’re on their email list, and they begin their relentless attempts to sell you a resume.

3. Use an Online Resume Builder

Another viable option for creating a resume is to use an online resume builder.

An online resume builder is a software program used by job seekers to design and create resumes.

They provide professional resume design templates that will help you take care of the formatting and styling of your resume.

Using a resume format that is already created for you allows you to focus on the content of the resume instead of designing something on your own.

Although using an online resume builder can cost you some money, it is much better than using a Word doc to create your resume from scratch. The templates in Word are fairly basic and are used by many job seekers.

You will also find free online resume builders out there. In fact, there are quite a few of them! The hitch about using the free ones is that you will get limited resume customization options.

Also, be aware of builders that look like a free service, but ask for payment right before you download your resume.

You don’t have to spend time designing an eye-catching resume. Additionally, online resume builders are often free. But when they’re not, they usually don’t cost much money. Also, there are tons of resume builders available on the Internet.

You will need to fill in the templates completely in your own words, which takes some time. Some services look free upfront but then charge a fee. And if you go with this option, it is best if you have a keen eye at evaluating professional resume formats.

4. Pay a Resume Writing Coach

There are times when writing a resume for a job can be more daunting than usual. Even when you use a resume review site or an online resume builder, you still may not be able to figure it out.

More complicated job searches, such as those involving a career change or industry change, an employment gap, or relocation from one city or state to another may require a higher level of assistance.

Figuring out the over-and under-qualification equation to target your resume for a particular job can also be challenging. In such situations, a resume writing coach can prove very helpful.

A resume coach is a skilled specialist with in-depth knowledge and expertise in documenting your qualifications, work history, career objectives, and talents in a way that appeals to a recruiter.

You can meet with the coach (sometimes online or via a call) to discuss your resume and make the changes together on your resume.

They help create an engaging narrative that aligns your experience with the requirements of any given job opportunity.

Another option is to learn the art of resume writing from them so that you can implement the changes on your own.

Professional resume writing coaches stay updated with the latest hiring processes and can research and identify keywords and phrases related to several job postings. You will work with a “real, live” human one-on-one to create your resume together, giving you the opportunity to learn some resume tips and tricks.

Despite going through the trouble of looking for a good coach and even possibly spending some money, a resume coach won’t do all the work for you. You may have to make some personalized changes by yourself. Also, resume writing coaches can be hard to find.

5. Hire a Professional Resume Writer

In addition to paying a resume writing coach and using an online resume builder or a resume review site, hiring a professional resume writer is yet another way to build a resume.

In fact, it is the most viable resume writing option of the bunch.

Resume writers help you prepare your resume in its entirety.

They take care of everything…from guiding the structure to targeting the unique job post, from crafting summaries of your qualifications to turning all your disparate experience and skills into a compelling resume that grabs attention quickly.

In essence, they don’t just write a resume for you; they make your resume valuable and successful.

As professionals, resume writers are adept at asking the right questions to collect valuable information from you. They know how to demonstrate what recruiters are looking for and how to deliver information in a way that works for you.

Quality professional resume writers do not merely write your resume; they partner with you to do it. So, you can rest assured that your resume will represent your career journey in a captivating and effective manner.

The best part is that you don’t have to spend hours brainstorming how to approach resume writing. Just partner up and cooperate with an excellent professional resume writer, and you’re set.

The only downside to working with professional resume writers is that they’re the most expensive resume writing option you’ll find. But keep in mind that it’d be worth it.

You may need resume help if any of the following apply to you:

  • You’ve submitted many job applications, but you’re not getting any interviews.
  • You want to make a career change but are unsure how to position your knowledge, skills, and experience in the best light.
  • You’re generally not good at recognizing and highlighting your achievements.
  • You’re not a confident writer.
  • You don’t know how to get past applicant tracking system filters.
  • You don’t know how to impress a hiring manager or recruiter.
  • You don’t have the time to create or edit your resume.
  • You have some money to invest in resume writing help.

Pro Tip: Even if none of the above items resonate with you, getting an extra pair of eyes on your resume is still a good idea. That way, mistakes can get spotted and corrected before you start using it to apply for jobs.

Let’s dive into the eight best places to get resume help:

A resume writing service is a done-for-you option where a professional resume writer edits your existing resume or creates one from scratch. A resume writing service may be the right fit for you if you don't:

  • have confidence in your writing skills
  • know how to showcase your accomplishments
  • have the time to do it yourself

You’ll also need to have the budget to pay for the service. However, we have found that resume writing services are very reasonably priced!

Join The Break Community

We’ve written extensively about the best resume writing service . Our top pick is TopStack Resume.

TopStack Resume goes beyond creating a job-landing resume. Service providers can also give your LinkedIn™ profile an overhaul and provide personalized career guidance. Additionally, you don't have to pay for your resume until you are satisfied!

A resume builder is a tool that helps you put together your resume by following the system’s prompts. A resume builder may be right for you if you:

  • need help formatting your document or making it past a company’s applicant tracking system filters
  • want general suggestions for what to include within the document
  • need a cheaper alternative to a resume writing service

We researched these tools to discover the best resume builders and found that Resume.io is the top option.

Resume.io takes the number one spot on our list because it’s an easy solution to create a custom resume for every job application you submit. The platform lets you track all of your submissions so you know exactly where you stand in your job search.

A university career center can be your one-stop shop for professional guidance if you’re a current student or an alum of the institution. The center can assist you with the following:

  • Assessing your strengths and interests to choose a career path
  • Landing an internship
  • Preparing for job interviews
  • Writing effective resumes and cover letters

University career centers have knowledgeable staff on hand to help you prepare for your next (or first) professional role. However, they are typically underutilized. Remember: you paid for the service with your tuition dollars, so take full advantage!

Your local job center can help you with everything related to your job search — including revamping your resume. Once your resume gets polished, a center representative will upload it into a searchable database so employers can find you when they need someone with your skillset.

Sometimes known as American job centers, these career-related hubs are free to use by anyone authorized to work in the United States. There are almost 2,400 locations nationwide, so chances are good you can find a center near you .

Like the idea of getting free resume help? We thought so! Here are a few more things you can do:

  • Contact a recruiter or staffing agency. They may even be able to place you in your next role!
  • Surf the internet. Websites like CareerCloud are chock-full of great information and inspiration.
  • Visit your local library or continuing education center. They may have reference materials available or put on career-related events.
  • Ask someone in your professional network to review your document — especially if they have hiring experience.

Caution: In a pinch, having your friend or family member look over your resume for typos and clarity is better than not having a secondary review. However, depending on their professional background and comfort level with assessing or writing resumes, they may not be the best person to ask.

When it’s time to make a career move, it may be wise to seek professional resume help. Hopefully, you now know where to go to get that guidance. Once you’re satisfied with the document, set up an account with ZipRecruiter and start your job search!

It's OK to Ask for Resume Help

4 min read · Updated on December 14, 2021

Lauren Settembrino

I get by with a little help from my friends.

I bet you never thought that The Beatles could relate to writing your resume. However, I think we can all agree that John Lennon and Paul McCartney's “With a Little Help From My Friends” can apply to just about anything.

With the resume being such a personal document, it can feel uncomfortable to call for reinforcements. You're putting yourself out there on paper, sharing the story of you and your career over and over, and you may not want to admit that you're not quite sure what you're doing. Here's the thing though: It's OK to ask for help. If you don't believe us, at least believe John and Paul.

The rules of resume writing can seem amorphous and confusing; you know there are certain expectations, but you can't quite figure out how to meet them. Meanwhile, the stakes are high in the job search, and you don't want to gamble with your future. That's exactly why professional resume-writing services like TopResume exist ‒‒ so that you can finally find success with a resume that catches eyes for the right reason.

So, if you sang out of tune, would we stand up and walk out on you? Not at all. We're here to help, and it's OK to let us.

Resume writing is its own skill

Has anyone ever sat you down for a lesson in resume writing? Do you know about applicant tracking systems, the difference between “doers” and “achievers,” and action verbs on a resume ? If you're like most people, that answer is a hard “no,” and your ignorance may be costing you career opportunities.

Writing resumes is its own skill. It requires a thorough understanding of what goes on behind the closed doors of hiring managers' offices and a proficiency with writing styles that don't appear anywhere else. There's a reason there are professionals out there who do this for a living. In the same way you're an expert in your field, professional resume writers are experts in theirs, and that's why they can take your document to the next, job-winning level.

Time is a valuable resource

Searching for a job is a massive time commitment. In addition to your regular life responsibilities, you suddenly have to undertake hours of research, writing cover letters, tailoring resumes, interview preparation, and more. If you're conducting your job search while still employed, it's even more difficult to find the time for all of this activity. You're only human after all, and there are only so many hours in a day.

Fortunately, this is a problem that many people have been working to solve. From grocery delivery to sending out your laundry, nowadays, there are a number of services that can help you maximize your time by taking on some of the more painful chores for you. So ditch staying up until two a.m. and let someone else handle your resume. You'll be able to spend more time on other aspects of your job search: networking, browsing job boards for opportunities, and sending out stronger applications more quickly.

Go ahead, sing us a song

And if you sing out of key, that's fine with us. As the world's largest resume-writing service, our goal is to arm job seekers with resumes that bring them closer to their dream jobs. When you work with a professional writer, you'll feel empowered knowing that your resume is poised to impress because it's received the thumbs up from the people who know what's what. In the end, calling in the cavalry will result in a stronger, more polished document, as well as give you more time to strengthen other job-search elements, helping you become the total package. When you have the right friends, asking for help can be the difference between a longer job search and your next career milestone.

TopResume is ready to help you get by. Click here to learn more about our professional resume-writing services .

Where Can I Get Resume Help? 14 Free and Affordable Options

college advisor giving student support

Your resume is your introduction to a potential employer. A weak or ineffective resume will make the wrong first impression and will likely prevent you from getting a job.

It’s not something that you can just quickly throw together or copy off of Google. Developing a strong resume takes time, as it’s unique to you and your experiences.

That’s why it’s essential to get help with your resume, especially if you’ve been looking for a job for a while.

The good news is there are plenty of free and affordable ways you can get resume help.

DIY Free Resume Help

Making an effective resume can feel complex, but it doesn’t have to be.

This is particularly true if you are updating your current resume, when you’re applying for student jobs or entry-level-type jobs, or have a straightforward work history.

If you’re comfortable with the more “do-it-yourself” approach and are looking for a bit of help, here are a few of your options:

Your Friends and Family

At a minimum, you should have another person review your resume. They can help you catch typos and other grammatical mistakes, even if they know nothing about writing resumes or the industry you’re applying for.

Sometimes not knowing much about your chosen field is a good thing. The person reviewing your resume can pinpoint any time you use industry jargon or acronyms which may be unclear. Someone in the HR department may not be familiar with these terms, either.

You should be using keywords from the job posting or job description to help avoid any confusion.

Your friends and family can also tell you whether or not your resume passes the 6-second glance test . If they can’t tell you within a few seconds what type of job you’re trying to get, your resume isn’t doing its job and needs fixing.

Your Colleagues

Asking a trusted colleague or co-worker for help with your resume is smart because they know more about the industry and job responsibilities. This is particularly true for specialized and technical roles.

You do need to be careful, though. Unless you are applying for a promotion or internal transfer, you might not want your coworkers to know that you are applying for jobs elsewhere. This information could get back to your manager, and you probably don’t want that to happen.

You could reach out to a former colleague or someone from your network instead.

Grammarly is a free program that is essentially an elevated spell-checker and grammar-checker. It will catch the common writing mistakes for you and offer suggestions to make your sentences more concise. The clearer and easier your resume is, the better.

You can use Grammarly with the browser extension, copy and paste your text into their website editor, in Google Docs, or install the Microsoft Word and Outlook add-in. It even works on your text messages and social media updates if you download the app on your phone!

If you do a lot of writing, the paid premium version is absolutely worth it, in my opinion. I use Grammarly every day on every article, email, and resume I write at my day job and for this blog.

Reddit Resumes

Yes, strangers in the Reddit Resumes community will help you with your resume. With over 285,000 members, you can “Post your résumé for critique, critique someone else’s, or look for examples of résumés in your field.”

And I have to say, as a long-time lurker and occasional commenter, I have been really impressed with the advice people in this community give.

You can upload a version of your resume (with your personal details removed), and people will offer their advice and suggestions.

If you’re not comfortable posting your own resume, browsing through the threads is also incredibly helpful, especially if you can find people applying to similar jobs.

Career Blogs

Career blogs offer tons of advice and resources, usually for free. You can browse through the articles for resume tips or sign up for their email lists and job-related resources.

Some resources and services may come at a cost, but signing up to an email list is usually all you need to get access.

You can access my free career resource library without signing up!

Resume & ATS Scanning Websites

There are plenty of free (or free trial) sites that will review your resume and compare it to the specific job posting you’re applying for. The algorithms will tell you exactly what needs work, as well as what keywords you’re missing.

Most employers use scanning software (Applicant Tracking Systems or ATS) to initially screen applications. While these scanners won’t catch spelling mistakes or other errors, they will tell you if you are using the right keywords for the job. And you need those keywords to make it to the next step in the hiring process.

Sites like ResumeWorded.com , Jobscan.co , and ResyMatch.io are my personal favorite and are easy to use. (You will need to create a free account, but they don’t ask for a credit card or any payment info.)

Assisted Free Resume Help

You don’t have to search for a job alone. There are many different ways you can get assisted, professional help with your resume and job hunting for free.

Employment Centers

Employment centers, unemployment centers, career centers, American Job Centers , employment agencies, employment assessment centers, training centers, skill development centers, workforce development…

No matter what they’re called, these organizations are government-funded and free for everyone to use.

The specific services offered at each location will vary, but generally speaking, you can expect to find:

  • Access to computers, photocopiers, printers, fax machines, and telephones
  • Local job postings and online job banks
  • Resources and templates for creating a resume and cover letter
  • Resume samples
  • Interview preparation tips
  • Information on the labor market
  • Workshops on various job-related topics
  • Referrals to other agencies and support services
  • Career assessment tests
  • Skills training and identification
  • Staff available to answer your questions and assist you

Employment counseling may also be available, but there might be eligibility criteria (such as being unemployed, working part-time, or within a specific age group).

And as a bonus, if your local center also works with hiring managers and employers, you can get access to job opportunities in the hidden job market .

Social Service Organizations

If you belong to a specific demographic, many social service organizations provide career and job search support. These groups include:

  • Immigrants, refugees, and newcomers
  • People with disabilities
  • People with mental health illnesses
  • People with criminal records
  • Youth (typically ages 15-25, but can go up to age 29)
  • People of Aboriginal descent
  • Homeless people or those living in shelters
  • People with barriers to employment

In North America, you can call “211” and be connected with the right help, or visit www.211.org (US) or www.211.ca (Canada).

The Library

Most libraries offer training workshops on various topics, including filing your taxes and writing resumes. Unlike the do-it-yourself approach, attending workshops gives you the chance to ask questions and get the specific answers you need.

Libraries usually provide job-related information, resume examples, and helpful links on their website. They also have books and other resources to help with your career development beyond the hiring process.

You should also ask or check out what other free training courses they offer or can refer you to. Learning new job skills will make your resume stronger!

Adult Education Centers & Literacy Centers

Continuing education centers and community centers run various workshops, including job readiness, soft skill development, resume and cover letter assistance, and job searching tips. Depending on the center, they may also provide free career coaching.

If your local adult education or literacy groups don’t offer these services, they can tell where you can go to get free resume help.

The employment center I work at has a close partnership with all education, upgrading, and training service providers in our region and will often run workshops for their participants.

College Career Services

If you are a student, soon-to-be grad, recent grad, or alumni, see what career services your college or university provides.

A benefit of working with your school’s career center is that they will be more familiar with the degree or diploma program you took and can provide more targeted assistance.

Staffing Agencies

Also known as temp agencies, staffing agencies are designed to match job seekers with employers who are hiring.

As a job seeker, you can meet with a recruiter (for free) who will ask about your skills and experience. They will do a resume critique and provide feedback on how to make your resume stronger, as well as what types of jobs you’re best suited for.

If there is a match between your qualifications and an open vacancy, you may not even need to worry about fixing your resume. You could be hired directly for the role!

Resume Builders

EMSI Skills is a free skills-based resume builder and optimizer with over 30,000+ skills in its library. Their tools make it easy to add your in-demand and related skills to your resume.

The other resume builders I recommend are not free, but they are super affordable starting at only $3.

Resume Companion , My Perfect Resume , and Zety are very similar, and I like them all a lot. They will walk you through building your resume and cover letter and provide helpful tips and examples that you can click to add. The sites also let you quickly change your template with the click of a button.

A 14-day trial (which may be all you need) is only $3, or pay $96 per year.

My Perfect Resume also has a Chrome extension that works with the major job sites (including Indeed, ZipRecruiter , Monster, Snagajob, and more) that will auto-fill your applications. That alone is worth a few bucks a month, isn’t it?

Resumonk is another good option. It has a simple interface that provides resume writing tips, and you can import your LinkedIn profile to make the process even faster. There is a limited free option, but otherwise, it costs $29 per year or $99 for lifetime access.

Professional Resume Writers

If you really just want your resume written for you, getting a professional resume writer might be worth the investment (especially if it means you get hired). Depending on what level you are at and what is included, expect to pay anywhere from $100 – $500.

You can get a free resume review through the Job Sauce that includes a phone consultation with a real person and resume expert (US only). They also offer professional resume writing starting at $250 but have mixed reviews.

According to the Balance Careers , the best resume writing services available online include Let’s Eat, Grandma , Monster.com , and The Muse .

Resume Writers has been around since 1999 and is also considered one of the top resume writing services. They charge $170 – $300 for a resume and cover letter that will be delivered to you within 72 hours.

If you prefer to work with someone who knows more about your local economy, search online for “professional resume writers near me” and read through the reviews.

Unfortunately, anyone can call themselves a professional resume writer, even if they don’t have the qualifications. So if you decide to go this way, asking for a personal recommendation is your best bet, if you know anyone who has hired a resume writer before.

How to Use AI in Your Job Search

  • Digital Management and Leadership

Written by Clodagh O’Brien

When it comes to the job sector, artificial intelligence can get a bad rap. Many media outlets have made a lot out of robots replacing people’s jobs across industries.

Marketers are already learning that AI is something that you can use to be more effective and productive in your role - 68% of our members said that it will help automate routine tasks followed by improving customer experience (46%). Not just that, AI can also boost your career by helping in your job search.

If you’re not embracing AI already, you should be. There are loads of great AI tools out there that can take over automated tasks and even help get creative juices flowing. But how can you use AI to boost your chances of landing the job of your dreams?

Toolkit - Assess Your Career

In this blog we’re going to explore seven different ways that AI can be used in your job search:

  • Help market yourself
  • Write and improve your resume and cover letter
  • Find a job that matches your skills
  • Communicate with recruiters or hiring managers
  • Prepare for interview questions
  • Role play for interviews
  • Evaluate your career

How is AI impacting the job market?

There’s no doubt that AI is having an impact on the job market. Companies always want to be more productive and efficient, and technology like generative AI offers the opportunity to streamline tasks and optimize processes.

According to a New York Times article, the most popular job in the corporate world right now is an AI executive, while the Mayo Clinic in Arizona created a first-of-its-kind job at the hospital system: Chief AI Officer.

This shows how much the job market is changing. Roles are now being posted with ‘ ChatGPT ’ in the job description or ‘AI skills’. The fact is that AI is not a fad or something that will fade away.

Marketers have been using AI for years in email automation and copywriting (just think about Grammarly), so it’s not something new. It’s a technology that’s evolved and can have an impact on departments across a company (but it’s also something that MIT believes will be adopted more gradually than people think).

A recent LinkedIn poll we ran asked members about their concerns for AI and their jobs. The results show that people are worried about the ethical impact of AI and also the need for new skills.

“If you're not already experimenting with AI and everyday tasks, you're going to be left behind.” Morgan Cummins

Recruiters have used AI for years to wade through resumes and screen candidates. Now it’s the turn of candidates as with easier access to AI, the technology can be used to bolster a job search in these key ways.

1) Help market yourself

How you present yourself can go a long way to landing an interview. It’s about communicating your experience, skills and achievements while adding some personality at the same time. Ultimately it’s about building a personal brand .

AI tools can be really helpful in helping you do this. For example, you can use AI to help optimize your LinkedIn profile based on a specific job description that you’re applying for.

A great tool for this is the AI career co-pilot, Careerflow.ai. It can help optimize your LinkedIn profile, generate cover letters, automate your job search by auto-filling applications, and has a dashboard to track all job seeking activity.

ChatGPT is another useful tool as it can help you create a great LinkedIn headline, generate LinkedIn messages, or spice up your existing copy to be more engaging but more importantly, more relevant to the role you’re looking for.

If you have a website, blog or portfolio use AI tools to help refine the content. Use a website builder or no-code portfolio site or build a website using ChatGPT to write the code . Make sure to have an ‘About Me’ section on the site to sell yourself and your skills.

Top tip: Never forget the golden rule of AI prompting : the better the input, the better the output. Carefully craft your prompts so that they’ll meet your specific needs. Don’t rely on generic prompts and make sure to check the facts and tweak it to sound more human.

2) Write and improve your resume and cover letter

You should still write a specific CV for every job you apply for. This can be a time-consuming task but with the power of AI, you have no excuse for not customizing your CV for whatever role you’re applying for!

There are some great resume-building tools out there such as Kickresume, Teal, and Rezi. You can also use ChatGPT by submitting specific prompts. You can also ask follow-up questions to get more details or clarify something. Getting experience in prompting can go a long way to helping here.

To double-check, use a tool like Jobscan to analyze the likelihood that your resume will be approved by an algorithm and get put in the “yes” pile.

Keep in mind the AI outputs might not be perfect, so proofread… and then proofread again.

Remember that not everybody is using AI yet to further their careers. If you’re already getting skilled at boosting your profile with AI, you’ve just nudged yourself a little further ahead of the pack.

“70% of people who used ChatGPT to write their resume or cover letter saw a higher response rate on their applications and 59% were hired” ResumeBuilder

3) Find a job that matches your skills

Finding the right roles can eat up a lot of your time even when using job sites. Even when you find a role that seems to be attractive, you need to comb through the job description to see if it matches your skillset and knowledge.

Luckily there are some great AI job-matching tools out there to do some of the work:

  • LinkedIn uses AI to enable personalized job recommendations based on skills, preferences, and profile information. This reduces the time and effort spent on manual searches. It also uses ChatGPT to analyze profiles and see if they are suited for a specific role.
  • On Fortay you can take a quiz that looks at what workplace culture might suit you. This will then produce a list of companies you may like to work for.
  • One for remote workers and freelancers, Pyjama Jobs uses an AI algorithm to match you with relevant jobs based on your expectations such as salary or job type and the details in your resume.
  • Sonara claims to be the first AI-powered job search automation platform that finds and applies to relevant job openings until you're hired.
  • Autojob collects new job postings daily and searches for jobs in your desired locations. It then applies on your behalf (based on preferences and any restrictions such as companies to exclude).
  • Talentprise is a job marketplace where you can do an assessment that ranks you based on education, expertise, experience, capabilities, and skills. Based on this data, the platform uses AI to match you with jobs.

4) Communicate with recruiters or hiring managers

Throughout the job application process, there’s a likelihood that you will need to reach out or respond to the HR department or a recruiter. AI can help with that too!

In 2023, LinkedIn started using generative AI to help premium subscribers draft personalized messages when messaging on the platform with hiring managers.

“Using generative AI with information from your profile, the hiring manager’s profile, the job description, and the company of interest, we create a highly personalized draft message to get a conversation started,” said Ora Levit, Senior Director, Product Management, Head of Core Growth + Premium at LinkedIn.

If you’re applying to a lot of roles, use a product like Zapier to connect with Gmail to automate emails. By labeling an email, the automation pulls that information and uses it to generate a prompt for GPT and then uses the response to create an email draft.

You can also create follow-up and thank you emails to keep front of mind and demonstrate professionalism.

Top tip: Consider using Google’s GPT for Sheets browser extension to generate personalized outreach messages at scale in Google Sheets.

5) Prepare for interview questions

Did you know you can use AI tools to help you prepare for likely (or even tricky) interview questions?

For example, you could feed the job description into ChatGPT and ask it to generate some likely interview questions based on that job description.

For example, by typing in ‘Pretend you're a marketing manager looking to interview me for an SEO role. Ask me questions and provide feedback’, you can find yourself getting a very meaty response from ChatGPT:

A great way to cover all bases for any job is to use ChatGPT to generate interview questions for each bullet point in the job description and analyze the job description for the top 10 keywords. This will help you show how suited you are to the role and give examples that can match.

By using AI, you can prepare for the dreaded competency-based questions and appear more confident no matter what question is thrown at you!

6) Role play for interviews

Another great way to use AI when hoping to boost your career is to use it to “role play” in preparation for an interview.

Having used AI to predict what questions you’re likely to be asked, you can then have a natural language conversation with it based on these questions. And you can even ask AI to assess your answers.

Join for FREE to access this video

There’s a great free Google tool called Interview warmup that helps you practice key questions and get insights about your answers. You’re asked questions and then your answers are transcribed. The AI tool then gives you insights about your answers to help you improve.

Standout is a tool that’s used in universities to prepare students for interviews. Once you select an interview the company’s Intelligent Mirror™ technology records your response which you can then play back and get personalized AI feedback to reflect on performance.

Prepper has an AI interview coach that invites you to enter details for any role to generate questions. You can then choose a level - easy, hard or pirate - depending on the seniority of the role.

“By 2024, four in ten companies would use AI to “talk with” candidates in interviews and 15% said hiring decisions would be made with no input from a human at all” Survey Builder

7) Evaluate Your Career

It can be useful to assess your career from time to time to see if you’re on the right track and also to see how you compare to your peers.

A new platform called NAV provides AI-driven analysis and human coaching. Once you complete an online evaluation NAV assesses the value of a current job or the potential value of a future position. The idea is to give you a score or a JVI (job value index)

Each evaluation includes actionable tips and the ability to access career experts offering customized advice and assistance. It also gives feedback on your current or future job opportunities, evaluating against industry benchmarks and your career goals and expectations.

Top tip: If you decide your current job isn’t right for you, Rezi has an AI-powered resignation letter builder. Just enter key details and it will generate the email for you!
