I remember my school days being jovial and fun while learning many lessons about life. My school days usually began by running off to the classroom before the first bell, and I would fight with my friends to sit in the first row of the class.

I was an average student during my school days, and I had great fun studying as well as participating in many events and activities at the school. While I enjoyed sports day, annual day and literary fests, I also liked studying in labs as I was able to perform many experiments and projects. School Life is the best time of our life as we make new friends, learn new things and build our career there. School time is the only time which we enjoy most, and when we enter college, we always miss our school life. School life teaches us lots of new things and prepares us to face all the challenges of life. I love my school life and really enjoy it. I have lots of friends, and all my teachers love me. I love my school and enjoy going there every day to meet my friends and learn new things. 

Everyone keeps on saying that school life is the best time of your life. When listening to these phrases from their elders, the school students think about what is good about this life. All we do in the entire day is to attend the classes and to do the homework. But once school life gets over, the students realise that school life was the best time of their life.

Apart from learning great things in school, you make new friends, play different sports and create memories for the rest of your life. The students also learn many life skills like teamwork, good manners, etc., and understand what they want to become in their life.

About My School and School Life

I study in the reputed private school in my city, and I am glad to be a student of this school. My school is one of the most renowned schools in my town. It is very beautiful and huge. My school has all the facilities for sports, study and other activities. Built-in a three-storey building, it is a Co-Ed and Senior Secondary School having Science, Arts and Commerce stream. The atmosphere at my school is delightful. We have a huge playing ground where we all students play different games like Badminton, Basketball, Cricket, etc. We have a separate Basketball and Tennis court, as well as a small and beautiful garden for kids.

The students practice these sports every day. The school also has a big swimming pool and sports area for indoor games. In this area, the students can play Table Tennis and Chess. There is also a big skating rink. Different physical training teachers train us for all these sports. These sports not only keep us fit but also increase our stamina and coordination.

School life is not just limited to studies and sports. There are also other activity rooms such as the music room, art room, and dance room. The Art room is a big hall with lots of colourful charts and various types of paints. The students can portray their imagination and can create beautiful art here. Dance and music are also very important in school life as they help the students express themselves in a new manner. The different movements in dance help the students in unwinding themselves.

My school has a big library where we all read different kinds of books, novels and comics. Apart from the library, my school has well-equipped scientific labs where we all practise various experiments of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. I have learned a lot of things in these labs. My school also has a big computer lab with trained technical staff that help us to learn everything about computers. I love playing on the computer and learning new things in the computer lab. In the computer lab, the students learn about using MS Word and PowerPoint. The computer lab is also called the ICT lab. The ICT teacher teaches the students about the internet and how to use it safely.

All the staff at my school are very polite, educated and experienced. Our teachers not only teach us but also prepare us for various competitions, and every year, my school wins many prizes in various competitions. I have even represented my school in a hockey championship and scored the second position.

The classrooms are big and decorated beautifully with different artwork done by the students. Various projects and models are kept in the classroom for the students to keep on revising their concepts. The teachers use smartboards, and every day a new word is taught to enhance the students’ vocabulary. Every day one student presents the ‘Thought for the Day’. These positive thoughts keep us motivated.

All the teachers at my school are very dedicated and punctual. They always teach us discipline and ask us to come to school on time. Our teachers love us, and they teach us in a very simple and easy way. Whenever we fail to understand anything, they try to make us understand it again without shouting at us. They give equal attention to all the students, and that is why my school has an excellent academic record. 

The teachers are well qualified. They use different techniques to teach us the concepts. The atmosphere in the school is fun-filled and fruitful at the same time. The school’s entire staff, from the security guard to the teachers, is very helpful and polite.

We learn many life skills also in school. Discipline, hard work, and punctuality are some of them. During sports classes, we learn teamwork and work together to win.

The best part of my school is its auditorium where all the school events and competitions take place. Our school auditorium is one of the best auditoriums in the town with a great sound and light facility. It is fully air-conditioned with lots of seats. Every year, my school organises an annual cultural festival which lasts for two days. Many cultural events take place within these two days like singing, dancing, debate competition, etc. I love to participate in a poem writing competition every year, and many times I have won prizes as well. Every year, the toppers of our school get awarded on this annual cultural day and we all students love to participate in various events of the annual cultural day.

We also have school assemblies in our Auditorium. Sometimes the students from other schools come and participate in the different competitions organised in our schools. These events are called inter-school competitions. These events are very good as we get to learn new things from other students and make many new friends.

Apart from the annual cultural day, my school is famous for organising one of the biggest annual sports meets. I love this annual sports meet because sports are my favourite. In this annual sports meet, various sports competitions are organised, and almost 50 schools participate in these competitions and win multiple titles. Me, my friends, and our seniors also participate in these competitions and make our school proud by winning in them. My school has great teachers, excellent faculty and all the facilities that one student needs to excel in his/her life.

The biggest reason behind the success and fame of my school is our Principal Sir. He is 50 years old, yet very active and disciplined. He has an attractive personality, and his knowledge is commendable. He loves all the students and always spare some time from his busy schedule to monitor the progress of all the students. I admire his personality and principles. He always encourages us to take part in various extracurricular activities, and it is the result of his support & dedication that the students of my school always perform better in all the competitions. We all are fortunate to have him as our Principal.

Principal sir awards the students who participate and win in different cultural and sports events. He has a good memory and remembers the name of every child. The students feel proud when Principal sir calls them by their names.

After each term, assessments are also being conducted in the school. The teachers prepare us for these assessments, and the results are also shared with the parents. The assessment is a good system as students understand the learning gaps and can work on them. The teachers are very helpful as they assist the students wherever it is required.

I love my school and my school life. Every day I learn new things here and enjoy it with my friends. All my teachers love me and always support me. I have learned discipline and punctuality from my teachers, and it will help me a lot in my future. I am proud to be a student at this school, and I will always miss my school after leaving it. My school life has taught me many things and given me some best friends who will be my friends forever. I wish all the success to my school and love everything about my school life. 

The different experiences which the students get in school life help them to become better human beings. When they leave school, they are not just taking the memories with them, but they take many friends, a career and good manners for life. It is the first place where the students come out of their family circles and create a new one with their teachers and friends.

School life is one of the most memorable times in an individual’s life. School life is filled with dreams for the future and mysteries to solve. I had a wonderful school life. My school life centered around my friends, gossip, and play. With no real responsibilities, I lived some of the best days of my life in my school life. Although I had several good friends, John and Sara were my best friends. They made my school days even more precious. We were not too brilliant or geniuses. But we were respectful and hardworking. All the teachers adored us.

 In my school days, all I wanted was to grow up and get out into the real world. However, now all I wish is for the good old days to come back. The best memory from my school life was the sharing of our lunches. We used to sit in a big circle in our lunch breaks and place all our lunch boxes inside the circle.  And then what followed was a half-hour full of talking and good food. 

Another precious memory from my school life was all of us playing silly games. We used to play truth and dare right in the middle of our classroom. It used to annoy our class teacher, Miss Priya, a lot. But as long as we were not harming anyone, she was fine with it. We used to find joy in the smallest of things. I remember one day a friend of mine brought mini cupcakes to class one day. That was the best day of my life. Life could not have been any better.

These are some of the dearest memories of my school life. I will cherish these memories for all times to come. I hope everyone’s school days are as joyful and beautiful as mine were.

I clearly remember the first day at my school. I was so scared and full of uncertainty. I joined school quite late in my life due to health problems. I felt like an outsider. I was afraid that my classmates would not approve of me. However, all the students and teachers went out of there to prove me wrong. I can still remember how everyone clapped when our headmaster introduced me to the rest of the class. At that particular moment, I should have understood that this was the start of some of the best years of my life.

I was groomed under the company of some of the greatest teachers in the world. They did not just teach me to excel in my academics. But they worked tirelessly to ensure that I build a strong moral character and a good attitude. I can say for a fact that my teachers have played the biggest part in my upbringing after my parents. They taught me the value of honesty, loyalty, and respect for others.

My class teacher, Mr. John, was the greatest man in the world. He treated all of us with love and equal respect. He did not believe in punishments at all. Instead, he used to make us do charity work or help around the local community center as a form of detention. I wish that every student would get the chance to come across a kind and loving teacher like Mr. John.

I was not perfect at all. I committed a lot of mistakes and blunders in my school life. Fortunately, my friends and teachers were always there to rescue me. My school life makes me realize how important it is to enjoy it like there is no tomorrow. School days are the best days of one’s life. They are filled with excitement, happiness, and dreams for the future. I believe that everything which I learned in my school life has molded me into the person I am today. If it was not for my teachers and friends at school, I would have been a completely different person.

Introduction.

School life is one of the most important character-building phases in one’s life. It prepares us for the challenges ahead. Once we are out into the real world, the bubble that surrounded us in our school life bursts open. We are exposed to real-life challenges and situations. Everything that we have learned in our school days, including the fundamental principles of life will help us stand strong against whatever life throws at us.

Not only is school life a very important character builder, but it is also the happiest time of one’s life for most of us. With no real responsibilities, school life is all about fun and living the best days of your life. Most of us will agree with the fact that the mere reminder of our school days fills us with nostalgic memories of the happier days gone by.

My School Life

I studied in a local Catholic School. Our classes would begin at sharp 9:00 in the morning. The classes used to extend till 2:00 with an hour in between lunch break. We used to have about 4 to 5 classes a day depending on the time each class lasted. Our school put a huge focus on extracurricular activities. They made sure that all of us participated in one way or the other. It used to host debate competitions, spelling bees, cultural shows, and sports tournaments. Simply put, our school gave as much importance to extracurricular activities as it gave to studies.

I was a very bright and hardworking student. I used to participate in all sorts of tournaments and competitions that my school held. I was the captain of our soccer team. I also lead my team into the inter-school soccer tournament. I loved being a part of everything. And it paid a lot in the long run. Not only did it make my school life awesome, but it also paved the way for an Ivy League scholarship.

My school used to celebrate all the important days that came along. Be it Parent’s day, Teacher’s day, or Founder’s Day, we celebrated all of them joyously. This offered a great opportunity to instill the importance of these particular days in the student’s minds. To date, I celebrate all these individual days with my friends and family. Therefore, my school played a huge role in developing my character.

Coming to academics, my school gave it the utmost importance. Along with regular classes, my school held monthly tests and quarterly quizzes to ensure that we excelled in our final exams. If any of the students fared badly, extra classes were held for them. My school did not believe in punishing the students who fared badly in academics. The motto of my school was to teach with love. Anything that was taught with love is always remembered.

The hallmarks of my school were discipline, honesty, and respect. My school put a lot of emphasis on building the individual character of the students along with giving them a quality education. I can proudly say that I still abide by all the values which my school instilled in me. I learned to live my life abiding by the basic values of humankind. The basic values included respect for the elders, punctuality, discipline, good manners, and honesty.

The friends that one makes in his school days last forever. I made some of the greatest friendships in my school days. Full of loyalty, sincerity, and love, my school life friends have stood by my side for the rest of my life. I can honestly say that my school days were the best days of my life.

George Orwell's schooldays

T here are two St Cyprians. One is a martyr of the early church – a third-century bishop of Carthage who was put to death in AD258 by a proconsul of the emperor Valerian after refusing to pay obeisance to the pagan gods. The other, now regarded by scholars as a mythological figure and expunged from the Vatican's martyrology, was Saint Cyprian of Antioch. According to legend, he was a pagan sorcerer who converted to Christianity but secretly carried on with his magical practices. He is regarded as the patron saint of necromancers.

We can safely assume that it was the first Saint Cyprian – patron saint of North Africa, by the way – after whom the Eastbourne prep school the young Eric Blair attended was named. But from his account of his time there before and during the first world war – published many years later when he was better known as George Orwell – you'd be forgiven for imagining that it was the second saint.

The title of the long essay " Such, Such Were the Joys " – taken from Blake's rhapsodic Song of Innocence "On the Echoing Green" – is bitterly ironic. Orwell hated his time at prep school – or, at least, seemed to have decided that he hated it by the time he came to recall it in print. "Whoever writes about his childhood," he says, "must beware of exaggeration and self-pity. I do not claim that I was a martyr, or that St Cyprian's was a sort of Dotheboys Hall ." Disclaimer issued, he does exactly that, in a performance of grotesque literary effectiveness.

To think of his schooldays is, he says, "to breathe in a whiff of something cold and evil-smelling – a sort of compound of sweaty stockings, dirty towels, faecal smells blowing along corridors, forks with old food between the prongs, neck-of-mutton stew, and the banging doors of the lavatories and the echoing chamber-pots in the dormitories".

St Cyprian's, Orwell writes, was "an expensive and snobbish school which was in process of becoming more snobbish, and, I imagine, more expensive". Its horrible headmaster Mr Wilkes and his still more horrible wife – they were nicknamed "Sambo" and "Flip" – presided over the school like cruel gods, fawning over the richer children and constantly reminding Orwell (a scholarship boy) of his second-class standing and the relative poverty of his parents.

It was a place of arbitrary and humiliating punishment, of extreme (and, he concedes, effective) physical cruelty: a dim boy is described as being flogged towards a scholarship exam "as one might do with a foundered horse", and of comical disgustingness. Under the overhanging rims of the porridge bowls, he writes, "were accumulations of sour porridge, which could be flaked off in long strips. The porridge itself, too, contained more lumps, hairs and unexplained black things than one would have thought possible, unless someone were putting them there on purpose."

The plunge-bath was "slimy", the towels "always-damp 
 with their cheesy smell" and on a rare winter visit to the local baths he sees in the "murky seawater" there is "floating a human turd". He writes of remembering a "pretty, mother's darling of a new boy" about whom the first thing he noticed was the "beautiful pearly whiteness of his teeth": "By the end of that term his teeth were an extraordinary shade of green."

More than physical disgust, Orwell is at pains to evoke a world of profound moral unease. "Such, Such" opens with a description of the seven-year-old narrator being beaten with a riding crop for wetting the bed, and then – because he was overheard telling another boy afterwards that "It didn't hurt" – being beaten again with such savagery that the riding crop broke: "The bone handle went flying across the room. 'Look what you've made me do!' the teacher "said furiously, holding up the broken crop".

The tears Orwell shed then, he writes, were not of anger or grief but of shame – "a conviction of sin and folly and weakness such as I do not remember to have felt before": "I can still recall my feeling as I saw the handle lying on the carpet – the feeling of having done an ill-bred clumsy thing, and ruined an expensive object. I had broken it: so Sambo told me, and so I believed. This acceptance of guilt lay unnoticed in my memory for 20 or 30 years."

Above all, then, Orwell zeroes in on the idea that here was a regime (the term seems apt) whose assumptions about the order of the universe are contradictory and unjust – yet at the same time unquestioningly internalised by its subjects. He hated Flip and Sambo and yet knew them to be his benefactors. He had no control over his bedwetting – though he prayed fervently for it to stop – yet was conscious of it as sin: "This was the great, abiding lesson of my boyhood: that I was in a world where it was not possible for me to be good."

"Such, Such" was never published in Orwell's lifetime. He himself said he thought it probably too libellous to print, and lawyers agreed: Secker & Warburg's libel report red-flagged more than 30 paragraphs of its 15,000-odd words. When Malcolm Muggeridge visited Secker & Warburg in early 1950, and talk turned to the possible inclusion of "Such, Such" in a collection of posthumous essays, publisher Roger Senhouse dismissed it as "full of self-pity". Muggeridge conceded the point, but likened it to a "dehydrated" version of David Copperfield . It only saw unexpurgated publication in the UK in 1968, after Mrs Wilkes was safely in her grave.

It is a very odd piece of writing. As a literary performance it takes its place alongside works such as Alec Waugh's The Loom of Youth and Cyril Connolly's Enemies of Promise – to which Orwell likely intended it as a sort of reply or companion piece. It is powerfully evocative, nakedly tendentious, and – as Senhouse noted – absolutely sodden with self-pity. What is perhaps oddest is that while you might expect it to show Orwell in analytical mode – a meditation on the way in which the private school system internalises expectations to do with class and hierarchy – you find none of that detachment. It hints at those themes but it is agonisingly personal, a howl of grievance when it is not a yelp of derisive laughter.

"There is this feeling at the bottom of it," says Orwell's biographer DJ Taylor , "and Orwell makes this point himself about Dickens writing about the blacking factory in David Copperfield , that deep at the heart of this is not so much a complaint that small boys are made to endure all this, but that I, George Orwell, or I, Charles Dickens, was made to endure all this."

The personal nature of the essay, then, should sound a note of caution. With as many Old Etonians in David Cameron's cabinet as were in Asquith's when Orwell went to St Cyprian's, and with Michael Gove bringing the squeak of chalk on blackboard back to the classroom, it is tempting to make claims for the contemporaneity of "Such, Such". Those parallels should be somewhat resisted.

In the first place, the sort of school that Orwell's essay describes – the single-sex boarding prep school staffed by sadists and reeking of gym socks, boiled cabbage and pederasty – is now distinctly on the wane. Few, even among the traditional upper classes, now dispatch their children to boarding school at the age of six or seven.

And there is a good deal of evidence to suggest that Orwell's account of his prep-school days was – how to put this? – a load of utter bollocks. Orwell's childhood friend Jacintha Buddicom said that the "I" of "Such, Such", "just was not Eric at all". She remembered him as a happy child, and such railing against St Cyprian's as she recalled was warmly humorous rather than bitter or aggrieved. Among several who left records of their time there, none strikes the same note. The golfer and sports writer Henry Longhurst said that Orwell's hated Mrs Wilkes was "the outstanding woman of my life", and when a dinner in her honour was given in 1951, 250 former pupils turned out.

"Unquestionably, Orwell intended it to be taken as literally true, which equally unquestionably, it is not," Taylor writes in his biography. He adds now: "It's a very literary performance. It's not reportage. It's very considered writing – looking back in time 25 years and very structurally coherent."

So what was going on? Did Orwell fabricate a miserable childhood? Or – in the trowelling on of improbably damning detail – was there a more general literary project in hand? Taylor points to the bizarre paranoia of one episode – in which the young Orwell, having sneaked out to buy chocolate from a sweet shop a mile or more from the school, emerged and took fright at a "small sharp-faced man who seemed to be staring very hard at my school cap".

"There could be no doubt who the man was," Orwell writes. "He was a spy placed there by Sambo! I turned away unconcernedly and then, as though my legs were doing it of their own accord, broke into a clumsy run. But when I got round the next corner I forced myself to walk again, for to run was a sign of guilt, and obviously there would be other spies posted here and there about the town."

A society in which one could be guilty without doing anything deliberate, in which surveillance was assumed to be total, and in which shame and fear and humiliation were profoundly internalised – it is, as Taylor suggests, more than plausible that "Such, Such" evinces a cross-contamination with Orwell's most famous novel.

"It is a fascinating piece," says Taylor, "because of the connections between it and Nineteen Eighty-Four . If you go back and read the descriptions of O'Brien, he is described as being first like a priest and then like a schoolmaster. It's almost like Winston Smith is the boy he is trying to reform. And I'm interested by all the totalitarian language in "Such, Such". Which piece came first – you can argue either way. In some ways the chronology isn't even important."

He adds: "The other point I'd make about it is how very alone the writer is – this tremendous sense of isolation. This is what Orwell does with his novels: he creates this almost entirely alone and friendless character at the mercy of vast and unappeasable forces that he or she has no way of comprehending or dealing with – and then the walls close in. That's the plot of all the five novels – I'm not counting Animal Farm – reaching its climax in Nineteen Eighty-Four . And exactly the same trick is played here ."

"Such, Such" may be a distorting mirror, but it is a mirror nonetheless. Many of us will still recognise aspects of it – whether in the structures and assumptions Orwell describes, or simply in the childhood sense of being powerless in an alien institution. And, certainly, it is almost a truism that the sort of school, of which Orwell's St Cyprian's was an example – and the public schools which they fed – were and are instruments of social indoctrination. Here are little microcosms of the sort of authoritarian and hierarchical society that their products were expected to go on and govern. The cliche that the battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton nods at this.

I didn't attend a boarding prep school, but I did go to Eton. I am younger than David Cameron and wasn't in his house (or "hice", as we Etonians like to pronounce it) so have no memories of our future leader. I do remember Damian Lewis as Wackford Squeers in a school production of Nicholas Nickleby , though – with Smike affectingly played by Rory Stewart , now MP for Penrith and the Border. The Eton I attended didn't ostensibly resemble Orwell's St Cyprian's, however, any more than it resembled Dickens's Dotheboys Hall.

That said, its forms and hierarchies were easily internalised. I attribute to my education not only an uncountable number of advantages and privileges, but some of the characteristics I find least attractive in myself. I have a craven teacher-pleasing tendency: a deference to authority and a desire to excel within parameters established by others rather than to challenge those parameters. I am a more conventional – sometimes timid – thinker than I would like.

One aspect of that school's setup – the prefect system – still seems to me a stroke of ideological genius: an object lesson in co-option. There, as in St Cyprian's and any comparable institution, "virtue consisted in winning": the strong and beautiful attracted hero-worship. So the apex prefect body, "Pop", is self-elective: the most popular boys – ie those most in a position to lead others astray – are also the most thoroughly bought and sold.

Their special privilege is to peacock about in coloured waistcoats – and for this, they will dutifully and without pay perform tedious prison-trusty duties such as spending hours in the rain on Windsor bridge preventing younger boys sneaking to the pub. What is cleverest is that they wear the price at which they've been bought – shiny buttons and a swatch of brightly coloured cloth – on their chests.

We can certainly see about us those – need we mention names? – to whom politics seems to be the continuation of private school by other means. For those for ever striving to regain the intoxication of having been a gilded god at 18, a cabinet post shines as the equivalent of election to Pop, and the prime ministerial job as the ultimate combination of head boy and victor ludorum .

At the same time there is a strong tradition of public schools acting on certain temperaments to produce absolutely the opposite: rebels whose anti-establishment zeal seems to have been fired by exposure to the rituals of that establishment at an early age. From Shelley (Eton) to Paul Foot (Shrewsbury), Tam Dalyell (Eton) to  Tony Benn (Westminster), many prominent figures on the left have been public schoolboys.

"A school could be conducive to that, if you have a certain kind of mind, because it is a sort of oppressive dictatorship in miniature," says Karl Marx's biographer and Private Eye stalwart Francis Wheen . "Some of us found it so oppressive that we rebelled against it. I hated Harrow so much that I ran away when I was 16 and left a note for my parents saying: 'I've gone to join the Alternative Society' and scampered off to London and lived in a squat. It's fair to say in my case that my politics was formed in reaction to Harrow."

Talking about the current schisms in the Socialist Workers party, Wheen points out that the party's leader Alex Callinicos , grandson of the 2nd Lord Acton, was educated at a top private school and another senior leader, Charlie Kimber, is the Old Etonian son of a baronet. Also prominent in the brouhaha has been Dave Renton, an Old Etonian barrister related to a former Tory chief whip: "It sometimes reads like a conversation between Old Rugbeians and Old Etonians about the main British Trotskyist party. It's quite bizarre."

There is a popular school of thought, indeed, that holds that the treachery of the Cambridge spy ring was a reaction against their public school educations – an idea explored psychologically in (Old Wykehamist) Julian Mitchell's fine 1981 play Another Country . Lindsay Anderson's film If 
 , meanwhile, dramatised the idea of the public school rebel as a sort of violent dream.

Yet for all "Such, Such" might suggest this conclusion, Orwell himself – who had no complaint about his time at Eton – can't, on its evidence, be planted straightforwardly in the tradition of the public-school lefty. "No, no," says Taylor. "He's always much too idiosyncratic for that kind of thing. The thing about Orwell, which has become almost a cliche, is that he was a conservative in everything except for politics 
 It's very easy with Orwell to make it all teleological and work back – but in some ways he was very conventional. I don't think he was at all radicalised until the 1930s."

"Such, Such Were the Joys", then, remains a riddling and fascinating document. Rather than describing the formative experience for Orwell's vision of totalitarianism it may, instead, have been a description itself formed by that vision. To repurpose Eliot's line: "We had the experience but missed the meaning, / And approach to the meaning restores the experience." It is a black magic of which the mythical St Cyprian might have approved.

  • A school child can’t be entirely free to make own choice. Children depend on adults – their parents or caregivers, teachers – who often make decisions for them. There are even those who say to their children, “Once you’ll become an adult, at age 18, you’ll be able to make your own decisions. Until then, listen to me!” How unfair it sounds! What about the demand for freedom in our society to which an individual could make a contribution? An influential philosopher, psychologist, and educational thinker, John Dewey, reasoned about this issue in his book, ‘ Democracy and Education: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Education ’. Some report the feeling of instability in life, which derives from dependence and inability to fully take care of oneself financially, for example. Besides, kids do not usually choose their school environment: they have to adapt to it over the course of studies. Unlike them, young adults are free to choose their college and their first job where they face less direct pressure to fit in.
  • A school child is surrounded by individuals. There is a common problem of fitting in that many school students face. When at school, a child has to become a part of the social environment members of which may have various types of characters, behaviors. Their views and habits may vary as well. In high school, there is confusion because of growing up. It is a period when it is important to accept oneself and one’s own new changing body and mind. Acceptance from others is important as well, and many young people seek it desperately.

Saying that “school is the best time of life” to a child is like saying that it cannot and will not be better after school. While being uninspiring and pessimistic, it is untrue, especially when there are problems that big an adjustment, acceptance, or the threat of bullying. The memories of my school days are very sweet. I often remember the sweet memories of my school days. In our class, there were sixty students . We all loved one another. There was a good academic atmosphere in our school. We attended our classes regularly. As a result, we were never afraid of examinations. Tutorial examinations were held every month half-yearly, 2nd terminal and Annual Examinations were held in our school. There were good facilities for games and sports in our school. We played football, cricket, and volleyball in our school. There were also facilities for indoor games. All the students of the class were very cooperative and friendly. We often arranged debates and went on picnics . The teachers were very helpful to us. They helped us both inside and outside the classroom . The headmaster was really an experienced teacher . My Childhood Memories:   I was the youngest son of my parents. So, all the members of our family loved me very dearly. They bought me nice toys. My grandmother was very fond of me. She told me many interesting stories.

My Days in the Village: I was born in a village . The Padma flows by it. I swam in the river with other boys.

The whole village was my playground. I wandered in the village and played with my friends. The days of summer were the happiest days to us. We plucked mangoes and blackberries from tree to tree and ate them to our heat’s content. I had a great fascination for picking green mangoes during storm.

Introduction: Childhood days are very special to every person. A human child is born in a very helpless and weak form. Parents raise the child with utmost care and unconditional love. Sometimes I made mistakes and when my parents were about to punish me, my grandparents always saved me. My grandparents died when I was seven years old. It was a matter of great shock to us. I still miss them.

Friends and Playmates: I had a few friends. They were our neighbors. At that time television was very costly and very few families had it. There was a color television in one of my friends’ houses. Sometimes I went to his house to watch TV. The programs on TV fascinated me. The number of my friends increased when I got admitted to the school.

The School: I was admitted to school at the age of five. The school was a very short distance from our house. I clearly remember my first day at school. I got up early in the morning, put on a white shirt and blue pants, and went to school with my father. In school, I met my teachers and classmates. My classmates were friendly and nice to me. My teachers also loved me very much.

Market and Park: Sometimes my parents took me to the market. At the market, they bought me dresses, chocolates, toys, balls, and other necessary items. They also took me to parks. We had a merry-go-round and other kinds of rides in the parks.

The Fairs: I also went to fairs with my parents. There is a big fair held annually in Chittagong. It is called ‘Jabbarer Bali Khela’. Many attractive toys and household items are found at that fair. My parents took me to that fair and bought me toys and sweetmeats. We also went to other fairs held on the occasion of Bengali New Year’s Day, Victory Day, Language Day, etc. We also went to different book fairs where my parents bought me books suitable for children.

Conclusion: A happy feeling engulfs me when I think of my childhood days. Then I lost myself in reverie and feel a strong nostalgia and longing for those days. That period has essentially made me the man I am now.

The saying school years are golden years is a true proverb for me . My school days were my best days. I enjoyed them a lot. I reflect on those days as the defining moment of my life. It shaped me as the person I am today. I owe my life’s successes to my school days.

From nursery to high school graduation day, my school days are a vivid recollection in my memory. Whenever a friend from school reaches out to me I am taken back to those happy days of my life.

My school days were a culmination of experiences that taught me many valuable lessons. I learned to read, write, think and communicate there. I gained knowledge which would help me in life. I can go on and on about my school days.

Why My School Days Were Golden:

My School days were golden for a number of reasons:

  • They gave me good experiences

My school days were a treasure chest of valuable lessons and experiences. I made many good friends at my school. I experienced social skills first-hand. I was taught to read, write and think critically. To develop my thoughts in coherent expressions. I learned valuable skills there. I learned to debate, paint, play sports and exercise to maintain physique.

My teachers and my classmates mentored me. My teachers taught me much of what I know about life. They shared their experiences and guided me. They were my models of success which I aspired to imitate. They aided me in discovering my life’s path. They supported, encouraged and motivated me a lot. My friends were an immense blessing as well.

Though we have as many or more instructional hours put into a school year than most countries, the amount of days our students spend at school is quite low compared to competing nations. This method seems like a formula for failure, as the countries with more school days but less instructional hours do better on test scores (Drehle, David Von). Though there has been a proposal in the U.S. called “Extended school time,” so far, it has only been implemented in some states, showing excellent results (“Raise Achievement”). This demonstrates that since individual states are achieving better test results, then the entire nation would benefit from such an initiative.

Besides great improvement on test scores, more days of study in public education can better reflect the working schedule of parents and guardians. Catherine Brown, Vice President of Education Policy at the Center for American Progress, says that, “Schools make it really hard for working parents—and particularly, working moms—to fulfill all their responsibilities. Better aligning school and work schedules ought to be a core component of a progressive agenda to help working families” (“A 9 To 5 School Day: Are Longer Hours Better for Students and Educators?”). And another note: many families are single-parent units that have trouble keeping their children’s lives organized and adapting their schedules to their children’s school times.

There is also the fact of adapting to other interests. Many subjects are simply not covered because of a lack of time and a strong focus on receiving good test scores in mandatory subjects. According to the Seattle PI , “A longer school day would allow schools to spend more time on art, music, social studies, science and physical education. These subjects have been cut back through the years to focus on English and math in the hopes of boosting test scores. Yet test scores have remained stagnant, and students have missed out on a more well-rounded education” (Bean-Mellinger, Barbara). A more comprehensive education commonly develops mandatory classwork. Children who are better at music, art, and other creative activities have been shown to increase their intelligence and diligence.

Unfortunately, the United States stands only about average in world rankings for mathematics reading, and science testing, despite it being an economic and political superpower. This means that our standard education needs to be changed. It seems that the main issue is that students do not spend enough days at school, as countries that spend more days at school as compared to the U.S. generally outperform in terms of test scores. Adding more days to the public educational calendar would increase test scores, make it easier for parents to align their schedules with their children, and also allow the school system to focus on more creative and neglected studies that are essential for a growing child. Thus, we should make this initiative a nationwide phenomenon.

School Days is a fascinating, comic and sometimes even sarcastic narrative about Patrick Chamoiseau 's childhood in Fort-de-France, Martinique, one of the French colonies. We see all the events that take place in the book through eyes and perception of the little boy Chamoiseau. He tells us about his brothers and sisters who every day go to some mysterious place called “school” and back home happy and tired. The little boy doesn’t know why the Big Kids should go there every day and he feels so lonely, staying at home with his mother, who is always busy.

He paints the walls with the chalk; he took his brother’s bag to study what mysteries are hidden in it because he longed to go to school like they do. So he asks mother to go there with them, but she sends him to a nursery school where he was one of the best students and he did his best to get the praise. He liked to study there because he got a success there, but then he finds out that he doesn’t go to a real school and his world was completely ruined. And his mother decides to send him to the real school and the little boy was happy. But this happiness wasn’t destined to last for long.

From the first day at school, he finds out that the Teacher talks only French and he can barely understand it. Moreover, it was banned to talk the Creole language and it was hard for him to understand why his native language is barbarian and primitive and why the French language is superior. The Teacher had his favorite students, his pets because their parents were rich and they knew French, so the class was divided into “the smarties, the numbskulls, and the hopeless duds”. The teacher also had his arm which he used if a child pronounce some sound wrong or didn’t pronounce it at all, or his answer was incorrect or there were no answer at all, or the Teacher just had a bad humor that day – the reasons were enormous.

The Director of the school was a quite unpleasant person for the little boy; he was rude, never talked to children, except for sending into his office for punishment, and when he went by everything died, everybody stayed motionless being afraid to be kicked or humiliated. But in spite of all those terrific things there were also so quite pleasant school memories, one of them is milk days, when all students were sent to the school yard to enjoy the warm and delicious drink, but when someone told that there was a lizard in the milk children stop drink it and the milk days wasn’t a holiday for them anymore.

But there were afterschool games and the little boy always waited for them with a great impatience, and although his mother didn’t allow him to come home late and there were so called “baowufers” who often destroyed their games, the little boy never missed the opportunity to have fun with other children. He even began to lie his mother and found out the bottom line: the story is a lie only if you tell it badly and the stories, he create for his mother to believe him, grew better every day, he was quite talented in this area.

The little boy also liked to read; it was the Teacher who awakened in him the love of reading and of books and he is grateful him for that. He took the book, imitated the Teacher’s manner to read, his gestures, voice and intonation. In every book there were kept secrets, his imagination couldn’t take up for, so he started to rewrote the books according to the pictures, creating his own stories. He was just imitating reading but later, bit by bit, “the homey little Creole in his head was joined by scraps of French words, phrases
 There was no looking back”. Although his handwriting wasn’t perfect and the Teacher always punished him for the disaster area around his inkwell, the little boy was happy, the magic of writing opened for him, he wrote not to please the Teacher but for his own pleasure. The little boy, without realizing it, was tracing the ink lifeline of survival.

Myths and misinformation run rampant on the internet all the time these days, but never more reliably than on April 1.

People have celebrated April Fools' Day for centuries with all sorts of jokes and pranks, and while old-school traditions (hello, rubber snakes) remain plenty popular, gags have grown considerably more high tech over the years.

And fake news and announcements — whether by a major company, public figure, a random social media user or your childhood best friend — can take off quickly and morph wildly, thanks to social media.

It can be tough to tell whether something online is real, especially with artificial intelligence making it increasingly easy for anyone to create fake images, video, audio and text.

It took Sam Gregory, for example, under a minute to write the text prompt needed to create a fake image of the Easter Bunny for his kids last year, as he told NPR. He's well-acquainted with the challenges of combating deepfakes as the executive director of WITNESS , a human rights nonprofit whose work involves helping people recognize and respond to deceptive AI.

"We're in this moment where it's much easier to make both personalized and individualized, realistic images and audio and increasingly video, and in the hands of many more people," Gregory said. "And then the flip side of that is that the tools are not easily available on the technical side to spot them."

There are some resources out there — from news literacy nonprofits to trusted media sources — that can help sort fact from fiction. But much of that responsibility falls to internet users themselves.

Part of that involves understanding the moments where myths tend to spread, like in the immediate aftermath of a breaking news event or on April Fools' Day, says Dan Evon, the senior manager of education design at the News Literacy Project and a former Snopes fact-checker.

He says April Fools' Day, with its trend of advertisements masked as jokes, is a perfect time for people to get in the mindset of anticipating and investigating misinformation.

"April Fools' Day jokes in general don't try to persuade your politics or make you angry or target the negative emotions that are dangerous online," he told NPR. "And a lot of the things that you find are humorous. So from a news literacy perspective, it's kind of fun to encourage people to practice your skills."

Plus, he notes, some of the rumors that originate on April Fools' Day could have staying power or resurface much later, like the fake image of an elephant carrying a lion cub that circulated years after it was first posted as a prank.

Here are some steps you can take to reduce your chances of getting fooled online, on Monday and beyond.

The biggest piece of advice that Evon tells people is to simply slow down.

"Social media is really fast, and there is so much information that comes at us at once," he says. "You don't have to go through this stuff so quickly, you can take some time — just a few extra seconds — to examine these posts."

Gregory similarly says to stop when you see something that's "too good to be true, or too crazy to be believable, or too-anger inducing."

He cites the SIFT methodology for evaluating information, developed by researcher Mike Caulfield . It stands for: Stop, investigate the source, find better coverage and trace claims, quotes and media to the original context.

Once a piece of media gives you pause, he says, consider who shared it. Are they friend, foe or stranger?

"Is it your friend who's sharing it, or someone you know? And is it something they made themselves?" Gregory adds. "Or is it online and it's just a random X account that is trying to explain to you that the King of England has just died, but they seem to generally tweet gossip, and they're based in California?"

In other words: Are they a credible source for the context in which you're encountering the information?

This step is a little trickier on April Fools' Day, Evon adds, because a lot of the jokes are likely to be coming from verified official accounts. That's why it's especially important to consider the context.

"If you're going to encounter an AI image, you don't just see the AI image," he says. "You see where it's been posted, you see the comments that are attached to it, you see the caption that's presented — on April Fools' Day, you see the date. And maybe that makes you a little skeptical of whether or not it's real."

See what others are saying

The next step is to do what experts call "lateral reading," which is basically seeing what else is out there.

"If your only source of information is the one post that you're seeing, there's good reason to be skeptical of that," Evon says.

For instance, he says, if a major tech company is actually announcing a new initiative, there's likely to be news coverage of it from at least some credible sources.

This isn't a foolproof test. Just because people are talking about something online doesn't make it reliable — take all the amateur forensic experts analyzing Kate Middleton's controversial family photo , Gregory notes.

But seeing what — and how much — people have to say in the comments section of an X post or TikTok video can be a helpful clue, both experts agree.

"I think it's often worth looking at the comments not because the comments tell you the truth, but the comments tell you if there's a debate around this that merits further investigation," Gregory says.

Look for the original

Another tactic is to try to track down the original image, something Gregory says is easier to do with "shallow fakes," or photos manipulated with basic editing software.

Oftentimes people will take an existing image or video and just say it's from another time or place. Doing a reverse image search can help you challenge or back up that claim.

That basically involves "taking a screenshot and plugging into a search engine and then seeing what pops up," according to Evon. He recommends using sites like Google Images, TinEye and Bing.

Making sense of those results requires some more critical thinking, Gregory explains.

"It's going to pop up and say, 'Wait a second, someone told you this image was from yesterday, but we have an earlier version that's from last year,' " he says. "Now, it doesn't mean the image is from last year, but it certainly tells you it's not from yesterday."

When it comes to AI deep fakes, Gregory says there are plenty of clues that people have been told to look for to try to spot manipulated photos and videos — from hands that don't look quite right, to garbled writing in an image, to eyes that don't properly blink.

The problem, he adds, is that most of those glitches are going away as companies get better at AI.

"If we had talked a year ago, it would have been more reliable to say, look at the hands. The hands have got better," he says. "If we talked a year ago it'd been more reliable to say, look at the writing. But then companies have introduced ways to write more accurately."

Amplify responsibly

Internet trickery doesn't mean you can never retweet a funny post or play a harmless prank again. But experts urge caution when amplifying information, no matter the date on the calendar.

"There are going to be jokes that people are going to circulate, in a lot of instances these are going to be funny," acknowledges Evon. "I don't think it's ever good to intentionally lie to someone or mislead someone, so if you do share something, maybe comment and remind people that it's fake."

He offers this broader rule of thumb: If you're skeptical of something, don't help it go viral. And if you do encounter accurate information — like a fact-check or correction — help amplify that instead.

When it comes to reposting, Gregory recommends pausing "in proportion to your emotional reaction." So if you're about to share something inflammatory, defamatory or that reinforces a worldview in a "highly emotional way," he says stop first to consider your motivations for sharing it — and whether that post is the best way to achieve them.

Consider patterns

April Fools' Day may be a unique day in many ways, but it also reflects broader trends in misinformation.

It's not the only day of the year where people should be bracing for falsehoods online, Evon says, noting that people tend to exploit major breaking news stories (like the collapse of the Baltimore bridge ) to promote misinformation.

"What we really want people to do is, we want to learn the patterns that these things follow, so that they can better recognize them in the future," he explains.

This year, Gregory is most expecting to see the proliferation of AI images — because they're so easy to make — and audio, because it's already being seen in so many other contexts, from phone scammers using voice clones to an election-related robocall purported to be from President Biden.

"I bet we're going to see many, ho-ho-ho April Fools' jokes with audio clones, some of which you and I will never hear because it'll just be me making one for my friend and sending it to them," he says. "And of course if you go on TikTok you're gonna see fake AI audio everywhere. And it cuts across that whole spectrum, from humorous and prank to financial scam to political upheaval."

He also notes that the uncertainty created by AI hasn't only made it easier for people to falsify things, but for people to try to dismiss real footage as fake. That's just another reason, he says, to pay close attention.

How did April Fools' Day start and what are some famous pranks?

Historians aren't pulling your leg when they say no one is quite sure about the origins of April Fools' Day. 

April 1, the annual day of shenanigans, pranks, tricks and hoaxes, falls on Monday this year. While historians are unsure of the exact source of the tradition, they do know the custom goes back centuries, at least back to Renaissance Europe and possibly back to Roman times. Here's a look at what the experts say.

Theories, both real and false, tie April Fools' Day to Roman times 

Some believe April Fools' Day dates back to Hilaria festivals celebrated during classical Roman times. The festival was held on March 25 which, in Roman terms, was called the "eighth of the Calends of April," according to the Library of Congress. 

One theory tying the source of April Fools' Day to Roman times is a hoax. In 1983, an Associated Press reporter reached out to Joseph Boskin, a historian at Boston University, to discuss the origins of April Fools' Day. Boskin spun a tall tale to the reporter, assuming it would be fact-checked and revealed as fake. 

It wasn't. 

According to the story Boskin made up, a group of jesters convinced Emperor Constantine to make one of them king for a day. The appointed jester, named Kugel, declared it would be a day of levity. 

"I got an immediate phone call from an editor there, who was furious, saying that I had ruined the career of a young reporter," Boskin said in a Boston University post. "He said I told a lie. 'A lie?' I asked, 'I was telling an April Fools' Day story.'"

Middle Ages 

Some historians believe France is responsible for the humorous tradition, tying it to a calendar change in 1582, according to the History Channel . That year, France implemented the Gregorian calendar, shifting the start of the New Year from the spring equinox, which usually falls around April 1, to January 1. 

After the change, people who wrongly celebrated the new year in late March and early April were called "April fools."

The first clear reference to April Fools' Day is a 1561 Flemish poem by Eduard De Dene, which tells the story of a servant being sent on "fool's errands" because it's April 1, according to the Library of Congress. 

What are some famous April Fools' Day pranks?

In 1957, the BBC ran a broadcast on the Italian spaghetti harvest  that pretended the pasta was being harvested from trees. 

The BBC also ran an April Fools' report on flying penguins in 2008.

In Los Angeles, airline passengers were greeted with a banner saying "Welcome to Chicago" after landing on April 1, 1992, CBS Sunday Morning previously reported.

Taco Bell in 1996 advertised that it had bought the Liberty Bell and renamed it the "Taco Liberty Bell," according to the company.

As part of a 1997 April Fools' Day joke, Alex Trebek, host of "Jeopardy," swapped places with "Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak, according to jeopardy.com .

On April 1, 2015, streaming giant Netflix shared faux public service announcements to remind viewers to "Binge Responsibly."
