‘dear vikram’ movie review: a socio-political film that bites off more than it can chew.

In his enthusiasm to deal with a number of burning socio-economic, cultural, non secular and political points within the span of 1 movie, director Nandeesh appears to have misplaced his focus
Even earlier than its launch, Expensive Vikram had fuelled curiosity among the many viewers because of an argument. The Central Board of Movie Certification (CBFC) had objected to the movie’s earlier title Godhra , following which director Nandeesh clarified that the movie is by no means linked to the notorious Godhra riots of Gujarat in 2022 and that he has no intention of injuring anybody’s sentiment. Regardless of the clarification and the altering of the title to Expensive Vikram , the viewers has remained curious, and now, the movie lastly premiered on Voot Choose.
Expensive Vikram
Director : Ok.S. Nandeesh
Solid: Satish Ninasam, Shraddha Srinath, Vasishtha Simha, Sonu Gowda, Achyut Kumar
Length : 124 minutes
Storyline: Vikram, a Maoist revolutionary, is left in a dilemma whereas selecting between love and beliefs
Apart from the truth that streaming platforms supply more room for such socio-political content material, the small, private display makes the problems with the movie’s cinematic language, construction and approach extra obvious. Nandeesh has taken the danger of choosing a hyper-link, multi-narrative construction that connects characters, who’re both victims or beneficiaries of the social local weather in our nation.
He makes use of 4 characters to get his message throughout: Vikram (Satish Ninasam), a gifted Dalit pupil; Nitya (Shraddha Srinath) an upper-caste idealist; Bharat (Vasishta Simha); and Nidhi (Raksha Somashekar). Whereas Vikram represents a revolutionary path, Bharat believes in a robust Hindu Nation. The movie delineates their life and experiences, exposing the futility of romantic idealism that’s believed to be misguiding the youthful era. Expensive Vikram majorly revolves round Vikram, because the title suggests, and Nitya, who as college students talk about altering society and getting married. Each Vikram and Bharat lastly realise that the system exploits their idealistic minds and makes use of them for his or her beneficial properties.
Nandeesh was sincere. As he claimed, Expensive Vikram has no connection to the Godhra communal riots, straight or not directly. It peripherally touches upon the prevailing sectarian ambiance, the place even our minor variations are being weaponised. However, in his enthusiasm to deal with a number of burning socio-economic, cultural, non secular and political points within the span of 1 movie, the director appears to have misplaced his focus. Consequently, Expensive Vikram seems to be overtly preachy, and to attach the lacking dots and for continuity’s sake, the director takes recourse to a narrator.
However the filmmaker additionally makes an attempt to current the present political situation with out making direct references. Within the melee, the viewers might discover the caricatures of a former chief minister, who launched the “Grama Vastavya” programme and takes an oath within the identify of farmers and the slain Maoist Saket Rajan alias Prem. No stones are left unturned. From the farmers’ agitation, the Hindutva agenda, the anti-Feudal Maoist motion, and romantic idealism, to the bonhomie of politicians and the company world and the commercialisation of schooling, it touches upon each concern plaguing India. Had Nandeesh focussed on one concern and weaved different parts round it, his intention would have yielded the consequence. In the meantime, those that anticipate one thing totally different after watching the trailer and controversy over the change of title, may be left disillusioned.
With an ensemble solid of skilled actors equivalent to Satish Ninasam, Shraddha Srinath, Vasishtha Simha, and Achyut Kumar, the director might have created sturdy characters that go away an impression on the minds of the viewers. Nonetheless, all of the actors give it their greatest to carry the characters to life.
In its exhausting narration, solely songs equivalent to Jeevake Jeeva, Beeso Gaali and Yeno Salige handle to offer some aid to the viewers.
Expensive Vikram is at the moment streaming on Voot Choose

Dear Vikram movie review: Sathish Ninasam’s film on activism doesn’t quite pack a punch
The much-delayed film, which was earlier called Godhra, released today on Voot Select
- Prathibha Joy
Last Updated: 01.02 PM, Jun 30, 2022
Story: Vikram (Sathish Ninasam), a young idealist with left-wing leanings, finds an admirer in new classmate Nitya, who is fascinated by his views on governance and what needs to be done to set things right. When she realizes that Vikram actually puts his words ino action, as Naxal Comrade Prem, she gives him an ultimatum – to choose between his activism and his family. He favours the former and walks out on his family. Is there hope on the horizon for the couple or is Vikram too entrenched in his activism?
Review: Debutant director KS Nandeesh’s film Dear Vikram dropped on Voot Select today. Although the film is quite old, having gone on floors way back in 2017, the subject will remain relevant as long as corruption of any form continues in society. Dear Vikram, which was earlier called Godhra, a more apt title for its narrative about violent activism that borders on terrorism, is about Sathish Ninasam’s character Vikram, whose staunch belief in the ideals of his left-wing organization not only has him resort to violence, but prioritise his ‘work’ over family.
Unfortunately for Vikram, the realization that every organization, irrespective of its leanings, comes with its own nefarious agenda, strikes a wee bit too late in the day. The film has not one, but two romantic tracks, one involving Vikram and Nitya, and the other between Bharath (Vasishta N Simha) and Millie (Raksha Somashekar). But these are minor deviations from the main plot that focuses on the nexus between big corporates, politicians, bureaucrats and activists. Although their paths never cross, both Vikram and Bharath become pawns in this corrupt machinery. Is there redemption on the horizon for either of them?
Nandeesh’s film is about the sacrifices that lower-rung cadets of activist groups make with the firm belief that it is for the greater good. Unfortunately, there is no space for lofty ideals in today’s world that is driven by the desire for more. Everyone wants to grease their pockets and it doesn’t matter at what cost. The filmmaker tries to build his story around the land-grabbing of farm land, but this premise also gets abandoned by the roadside. In the end, the problem with the film is that the intention behind this story does not quite come across. Was it meant to be a love story or a hard-hitting political thriller? It is neither here or there or anywhere in between, with a narrative that lacks bite.
Verdict: If a film with a supposedly serious subject does not hold your attention despite a less than two-hour run-time that tells you that there are failings. But even if you were to overlook that, Dear Vikram, unfortunately, does not have anything worthwhile to mention; even the cast looks bored as they sleepwalk through their roles. The film is currently streaming on Voot Select without subtitles or any other audio track. Our verdict - skip it!

Wasted opportunity inspite of good intentions and actors - Achyuth, Satheesh, Shraddha, Sonu and Vasishta. Had the potential. Some parts were ok but song-dance inclusion idea was ridiculous.
Review by Priyatham Akella ½
Shraddha Srinath. Sincere but insufficient. Debut director is the reason why this film felt amateur-ish. No idea of "Show, Don't Tell" What's with all the preachy monologues!!
Review by Akash R Patil ★★★
Plot was good, spoken about real issues but execution was average. 3 stories were running parallel with different context, it is relatable to current scenario in the society. Needed much more intense story telling, songs could hv been avoided. (Watched it on OTT)

‘Dear Vikram’ movie review: A socio-political film that bites off more than it can chew
In his enthusiasm to address multiple burning socio-economic, cultural, religious and political issues in the span of one film, director Nandeesh seems to have lost his focus
Even before its release, Dear Vikram had fuelled curiosity among the audience due to a controversy. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had objected to the film’s previous title Godhra, following which director Nandeesh clarified that the film is in no way connected to the infamous Godhra riots of Gujarat in 2022 and that he has no intention of hurting anyone’s sentiment. Despite the clarification and the changing of the title to Dear Vikram, the audience has remained curious, and now, the film finally premiered on Voot Select.
Other than the fact that streaming platforms offer more space for such socio-political content, the small, personal screen makes the issues with the film’s cinematic language, structure and technique more apparent. Nandeesh has taken the risk of opting for a hyper-link, multi-narrative structure that connects characters, who are either victims or beneficiaries of the social climate in our country.
He uses four characters to get his message across: Vikram (Satish Ninasam), a talented Dalit student; Nitya (Shraddha Srinath) an upper-caste idealist; Bharat (Vasishta Simha); and Nidhi (Raksha Somashekar). While Vikram represents a revolutionary path, Bharat believes in a strong Hindu Nation. The film delineates their life and experiences, exposing the futility of romantic idealism that is believed to be misguiding the younger generation. Dear Vikram majorly revolves around Vikram, as the title suggests, and Nitya, who as students speak about changing society and getting married. Both Vikram and Bharat finally realise that the system exploits their idealistic minds and uses them for their gains.
Nandeesh was honest. As he claimed, Dear Vikram has no connection to the Godhra communal riots, directly or indirectly. It peripherally touches upon the prevailing sectarian atmosphere, where even our minor differences are being weaponised. But, in his enthusiasm to address multiple burning socio-economic, cultural, religious and political issues in the span of one film, the director seems to have lost his focus. As a result, Dear Vikram turns out to be overtly preachy, and to connect the missing dots and for continuity's sake, the director takes recourse to a narrator.
But the filmmaker also attempts to present the current political scenario without making direct references. In the melee, the audience may notice the caricatures of a former chief minister, who launched the “Grama Vastavya” programme and takes an oath in the name of farmers and the slain Maoist Saket Rajan alias Prem. No stones are left unturned. From the farmers’ agitation, the Hindutva agenda, the anti-Feudal Maoist movement, and romantic idealism, to the bonhomie of politicians and the corporate world and the commercialisation of education, it touches upon every issue plaguing India. Had Nandeesh focussed on one issue and weaved other elements around it, his intention would have yielded the result. Meanwhile, those who expect something different after watching the trailer and controversy over the change of title, might be left disappointed.
With an ensemble cast of experienced actors such as Satish Ninasam, Shraddha Srinath, Vasishtha Simha, and Achyut Kumar, the director could have created strong characters that leave an impression on the minds of the audience. However, all the actors give it their best to bring the characters to life.
In its exhausting narration, only songs such as Jeevake Jeeva, Beeso Gaali and Yeno Salige manage to provide some relief to the audience.

18 Movies That Traumatized Our Childhoods
Posted: May 4, 2024 | Last updated: May 4, 2024
Remember those childhood days of watching movies with wide-eyed wonder? Well, not every movie left us with warm and fuzzy feelings. Some films left us shivering under our blankets, clutching our teddy bears for dear life. Below are 18 movies that, for better or worse, became unforgettable parts of our childhoods.
The Dark Crystal
In this fantasy epic, the young Gelfling, Jen, goes on a quest to save his world from the evil Skeksis. These vulture-like creatures, with rasping voices and monstrous appearances, were enough to make any child’s skin crawl. The stunning visuals and fascinating world-building weren’t enough to make us feel good!
This movie follows the story of a man-eating great white shark that terrorizes a small seaside town. It’s hard to forget that iconic dun-dun-dun-dun theme music as the shark lurked beneath the surface. Those moments before each shark attack made us jump out of our seats and think twice about swimming at the beach.
Watership Down
An animated movie about a group of rabbits searching for a new home, Watership Down was anything but cute and cuddly. The violent clashes with other rabbit colonies and the dark and intense atmosphere disturbed us. The scene where one of the rabbits, Fiver, has a vision of a blood-soaked field was enough to haunt our dreams for days.
What started as a cute story about a new pet quickly turned into a terrifying nightmare. The scene where the seemingly cute and innocent Mogwai transformed into monstrous gremlins was shocking and horrifying. Their destructive behavior and scary appearances left us shivering in our seats.
The Fox and the Hound
This heart-wrenching tale of friendship and growing up follows the story of a young fox and a hound who form an unlikely friendship. Despite its heartwarming moments, the story takes a tragic turn when the two friends are forced to become enemies. The heartbreaking scene where Tod, the fox, is abandoned in the woods left us in tears.
The Secret of NIMH
In this animated classic, a brave field mouse named Mrs. Brisby sets out to save her family from a farmer’s plow. Despite the beautiful animation and captivating story, the scenes with the creepy rats of NIMH were terrifying. This doesn’t seem like a kid-friendly film!
My Girl is a poignant coming-of-age drama following the story of a young girl named Vada and her best friend, Thomas J. The movie explores themes of friendship, love, and loss. The scene where Thomas J. dies after being attacked by bees was heart-wrenching and left a lasting impact on anyone who watched it.
Return to Oz
In Return to Oz, we return with Dorothy to the magical land. However, this time around, Oz is a far darker and more sinister place. The creepy characters, like the Wheelers and Princess Mombi with her collection of heads, were enough to give us nightmares.
Fire in the Sky
Based on a true story, Fire in the Sky tells the chilling tale of a man abducted by aliens. There’s a scene where the aliens subject the man to terrifying experiments, which left all viewers horrified. The suspenseful build-up and the eerie atmosphere make it impossible to feel anything but fear.
M. Night Shyamalan’s Signs follows a family as they confront the reality of an alien invasion. The suspenseful atmosphere and the lurking threat of extraterrestrial visitors kept us on the edge of our seats. The scene where the alien hand reaches under the door made us jump out of our skin!
James and the Giant Peach
A whimsical tale of friendship and adventure, James and the Giant Peach follows a young boy as he embarks on a journey with a group of insect friends. The stop-motion animation, although creative, gave the characters a creepy and unsettling appearance. In particular, the opening scene with the eerie rhino cloud was particularly unnerving.
NeverEnding Story
The NeverEnding Story is a beautiful fantasy adventure that follows a young boy named Bastian as he reads a magical book. However, the enchanting world and captivating characters couldn’t save us from Artax’s death scene. The moment when he sinks into the Swamps of Sadness – pure nightmare fuel.
In this heartwarming story of friendship, a young boy named Elliot befriends an extraterrestrial named ET. However, the scenes where ET falls ill and turns a deathly shade of white were terrifying. We cheered for ET to make it back home, but those moments of suspense were enough to leave a lasting impression.
The Brave Little Toaster
This animated movie follows a group of household appliances on a quest to find their owner. But it’s not your regular kids’ movie; plenty of scenes fill you with sorrow, such as the parts with the terrifying junkyard magnet. The threat of being crushed and discarded made our hearts race.
Poltergeist
This horror classic follows a family as they confront the supernatural forces that have taken over their home. The creepy clown doll, the ghostly apparitions, and the spooky TV people were enough to send shivers down our spines. The scene where the young girl, Carol Anne, is sucked into the television was particularly memorable!
Arachnophobia
A horror-comedy that follows a small town’s battle against a deadly species of spiders, Arachnophobia was enough to give us the creeps. The scenes where the spiders crawled out of the drains and showerheads were too horrifying for words. No wonder so many of us have a lifelong fear of spiders!
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
A delightful mix of animation and live-action, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, follows the story of a detective trying to clear the name of a cartoon rabbit accused of murder. However, the scene where the villain, Judge Doom, melts into a puddle of goo seemed quite extreme for a kids’ flick.

‘Baby Reindeer’: What to Know About the True-ish Netflix Hit
The mini-series, based on the star’s experiences, has viewers wondering how much of it is real. Here’s the back story.

Some spoilers follow.
“Baby Reindeer,” Netflix’s absorbing, claustrophobic seven-episode thriller , has been an unexpected global hit — a success made even more surprising given its intense themes . It is far and away the most-watched show on Netflix , according to the streamer’s publicly released numbers, dwarfing every other show on the platform.
The mini-series follows the character of Donny Dunn, a bartender and floundering comedian trying to navigate the fog of trauma and cobble together a sense of self while being mercilessly stalked and tormented by a woman named Martha, with whom he maintains a codependent connection, despite the harassment. The title refers to one of Martha’s many nicknames for Donny.
Here’s what’s real about “Baby Reindeer,” and what viewers seem most curious about.
Yes, That Is the Real Guy
“Baby Reindeer” is the work of Richard Gadd, 34, who plays Donny, a slightly fictionalized version of himself. And if you were wondering how a regular guy could be such a confident, complex actor, it’s because he is a seasoned, award-winning performer who parlayed his autobiographical one-man show, titled “Baby Reindeer,” into the series, for which he wrote every episode.
But once upon a time, he was the self-loathing performer we see depicted. “Baby Reindeer” takes meta storytelling to new levels.
Yes, It Is Based on His Real Experiences
Early in the first episode, a message across the screen reads, “This is a true story.” And it is.
“It’s all emotionally 100 percent true,” Gadd, who was the real-life victim of the stalking, said in a recent interview with Variety . “It’s all borrowed from instances that happened to me and real people that I met.” True with the caveat that “for both legal and artistic reasons,” as he put it, details had to be changed. “You can’t just copy somebody else’s life and name and put it onto television,” he said. “We were very aware that some characters in it are vulnerable people,” he added, “so you don’t want to make their lives more difficult.”
The series is largely punctuated by language from real messages sent by his stalker (played by Jessica Gunning), which we see typed out onscreen. In his one-man show , a 70-minute monologue that premiered at Edinburgh Festival Fringe and would go on to win an Olivier Award (Britain’s equivalent of the Tonys), Gadd played her voice mail messages to the audience, and projections of her emails scrolled across the venue’s ceiling.
According to Gadd, she sent him over 41,000 emails, tweeted at him hundreds of times and left him 350 hours of voice mail over the course of a few years.
For the series, certain timelines were moved around “to make them pay off a little better,” he said. Nonetheless, “it’s a very true story.”
Gadd Has Asked Viewers Not to Dig …
While the saga, at first glance, is one of stalking and obsession, it is equally about the life-shattering effects of sexual assault. In the fourth episode, Gadd’s character is repeatedly drugged, assaulted and raped by a powerful television writer named Darrien O’Connor (played by Tom Goodman-Hill) who’d made false promises to help catapult the comedian’s career. (The sexual assaults were explored in Gadd’s earlier solo show “ Monkey See Monkey Do .”)
“Abuse leaves an imprint,” Gadd recently told GQ magazine . “Especially abuse like this where it’s repeated with promises.”
The depiction of the abuse is graphic and disturbing, and knowing that the characters were based on real people prompted great interest in the identities behind them. But Gadd was quick to urge viewers to stop investigating. “Please don’t speculate on who any of the real-life people could be,” he wrote on Instagram . “That’s not the point of our show.”
… Yet Viewers Keep Digging
As more and more people binge the show, social media platforms have become amateur detective rings, with viewers trying to suss out the identities of the characters. The British writer and director Sean Foley was the subject of online threats when some thought that he was the real-life Darrien character.
“Police have been informed and are investigating all defamatory abusive and threatening posts against me,” Foley said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) in late April.
On Instagram, Gadd defended Foley specifically, writing, “People I love, have worked with, and admire (including Sean Foley) are unfairly getting caught up in speculation.”
In the first episode, Gadd’s character searches Martha’s name online and uncovers a trove of articles about her past stalking — “Serial Stalker Sentenced to Four and Half Years,” reads one headline — which led some online sleuths to try to find the actual versions of those same articles.
The show has become such a phenomenon that The Daily Mail published an interview with a woman purporting to be the “real” Martha, lodging her complaints about the show, though her name was not disclosed.
When GQ asked Gadd what the stalker might make of the show, he said, “I honestly couldn’t speak as to whether she would watch it,” calling her “an idiosyncratic person.”
“We’ve gone to such great lengths to disguise her to the point that I don’t think she would recognize herself,” he said. “What’s been borrowed is an emotional truth, not a fact-by-fact profile of someone.”
