Arguments against animal testing

Animal experiments are cruel, unreliable, and even dangerous

The harmful use of animals in experiments is not only cruel but also often ineffective. Animals do not naturally get many of the diseases that humans do, such as major types of heart disease, many types of cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s disease or schizophrenia. Instead, signs of these diseases are artificially induced in animals in laboratories in an attempt to mimic the human disease. Yet, such experiments belittle the complexity of human conditions which are affected by wide-ranging variables such as genetics, socio-economic factors, deeply-rooted psychological issues and different personal experiences.

It is not surprising to find that treatments showing “promise” in animals rarely work in humans.  Not only are time, money and animals’ lives being wasted (with a huge amount of suffering), but effective treatments are being mistakenly discarded and harmful treatments are getting through. The support for animal testing is based largely on anecdote and is not backed up, we believe, by the scientific evidence that is out there.

Despite many decades of studying cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, stroke and AIDS in animals, none of these conditions have reliable and fully effective cures and some don’t even have effective treatments.

The history of cancer research has been the history of curing cancer in the mouse. We have cured mice of cancer for decades and it simply didn’t work in human beings.

Unreliable animal testing

• 92% of drugs fail in human clinical trials despite appearing safe and effective in animal tests, often on safety grounds or because they do not work.
• Urology drugs have the lowest success rate (only 4% are approved after entering clinical trials) followed by heart drugs (5% success rate), cancer drugs (5% success rate) and neurology drugs (6% success rate).
• Our research has shown that using dogs, rats, mice and rabbits to test whether or not a drug will be safe for humans provides statistically little useful insight. Our study also revealed that drug tests on monkeys are just as poor as those using any other species in predicting the effects on humans.
• A recent study found that out of 93 dangerous drug side effects, only 19% could have been predicted by animal tests.
• Another study showed that over 1,000 potential stroke treatments have been “successful” in animal tests, but of the approximately 10% that progressed to human trials, none worked sufficiently well in humans.
• One review of 101 high impact discoveries based on basic animal experiments found that only 5% resulted in approved treatments within 20 years. More recently, we conducted an analysis of 27 key animal-based ‘breakthroughs ’ that had been reported by the UK press 25 years earlier. Mirroring the earlier study, we found only one of the 27 “breakthroughs” had been realised in humans, and that was subject to several caveats.

Dangerous animal testing

• Vioxx, a drug used to treat arthritis, was found to be safe when tested in monkeys (and five other animal species) but has been estimated to have caused around 140,000 heart attacks and strokes and 60,000 deaths worldwide.
• Human volunteers testing a new monoclonal antibody treatment (TGN1412) at Northwick Park Hospital, UK, in 2006 suffered a severe immune reaction and nearly died. Testing on monkeys at 500 times the dose given to the volunteers totally failed to predict the dangerous side effects.
• A drug trial in France resulted in the death of one volunteer and left four others severely brain damaged in 2016. The drug, which was intended to treat a wide range of conditions including anxiety and Parkinson’s disease, was tested in four different species of animals (mice, rats, dogs and monkeys) before being given to humans.
• A clinical trial of Hepatitis B drug fialuridine had to be stopped because it caused severe liver damage in seven patients, five of whom died. It had been tested on animals first.

Animals are different

• Animals do not get many of the diseases we do, such as Parkinson’s disease, major types of heart disease, many types of cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, HIV or schizophrenia.
• An analysis of over 100 mouse cell types found that only 50% of the DNA responsible for regulating genes in mice could be matched with human DNA.
• The most commonly used species of monkey to test drug safety (Cynomolgous macaque monkeys) is resistant to doses of paracetamol (acetaminophen) that would be deadly in humans.
• Chocolate, grapes, raisins, avocados and macadamia nuts are harmless in humans but toxic to dogs.
• Aspirin is toxic to many animals and would not be on our pharmacy shelves if it had been tested according to current animal testing standards.

Animals Testing Essay - Model Answer

Issues related to animal experimentation are frequently discussed these days, particularly in the media. It is often said that animals should not be used in testing because it is cruel and unnecessary. This essay will examine the arguments for and against animal testing. 

On the one hand, the people who support these experiments say that we must do tests on animals. For instance, many famous lifesaving drugs were invented in this way, and animal experiments may help us to find more cures in the future. Indeed, possibly even a cure for cancer and AIDS. Furthermore, the animals which are used are not usually wild but are bred especially for experiments. Therefore, they believe it is not true that animal experiments are responsible for reducing the number of wild animals on the planet. 

On the other hand, others feel that there are good arguments against this. First and foremost, animal experiments are unkind and cause animals a lot of pain. In addition, they feel that many tests are not really important, and in fact animals are not only used to test new medicines but also new cosmetics, which could be tested on humans instead. Another issue is that sometimes an experiment on animals gives us the wrong result because animals’ bodies are not exactly the same as our own. As a consequence, this testing may not be providing the safety that its proponents claim.

In conclusion, I am of the opinion, on balance, that the benefits do not outweigh the disadvantages, and testing on animals should not continue. Although it may improve the lives of humans, it is not fair that animals should suffer in order to achieve this.

This animal testing essay would achieve a high score.

It fully answers all parts of the task - explaining the arguments ' for ' in the first paragraph and the arguments ' against ' in the next. Conclusions are then drawn with the writer giving their opinion in the conclusion.

It is thus very clearly organised, with each body paragraph having a central idea .

Ideas are also extended and supported by the use of reasons and some examples or further clarification. No ideas are left unclear or unexplained.

There is also some good topic related vocabulary in the animal testing essay such as 'life saving drugs ' and 'bred ' and a mix of complex sentences , such as adverbial clauses :

'Although it may improve the lives of humans, it is not fair that animals should suffer in order to achieve this'.

Noun clauses :

'...they feel that many tests are not really important'.

And relative clauses :

'...the animals which are used are not usually wild... '

Transitions are also used effectively to ensure there is good coherence and cohesion . For example, ' On the other hand.. ' indicates a change to discuss the contrasting ideas, and ' Therefore... " and ' As a consequence..' are used to give results.

Is Animal Testing Ever Justified?

The E.P.A. recently said it would move away from requiring the testing of potentially harmful chemicals on animals. Do you support the decision?

On Sept. 10, the Environmental Protection Agency said it would move away from requiring the testing of potentially harmful chemicals on animals, a decision that was hailed by animal rights groups but criticized by environmentalists and researchers who said the practice was necessary to rigorously safeguard human health.

In “ E.P.A. Says It Will Drastically Reduce Animal Testing ,” Mihir Zaveri, Mariel Padilla and Jaclyn Peiser write about the decision:

The E.P.A. Administrator Andrew Wheeler said the agency plans to reduce the amount of studies that involve mammal testing by 30 percent by 2025, and to eliminate the studies entirely by 2035, though some may still be approved on a case-by-case basis. The agency said it would also invest $4.25 million in projects at four universities and a medical center that are developing alternate ways of testing chemicals that do not involve animals. “We can protect human health and the environment by using cutting-edge, ethically sound science in our decision-making that efficiently and cost-effectively evaluates potential effects without animal testing,” Mr. Wheeler said in a memo announcing the changes. The E.P.A. has for decades required testing on a variety of animals — including rats, dogs, birds and fish — to gauge their toxicity before the chemicals can be bought, sold or used in the environment.

An End to Animal Testing Is Within Reach

With public knowledge of what happens inside animal experimentation facilities at an all-time high, the cruel practice may finally be on its way out.

Harmful experiments on animals have taken place in the name of increasing human knowledge for almost as long as scientific thought has existed, yet the practice is now outdated and has to stop. Thankfully, there is overwhelming evidence that animal testing is losing favor in the public eye. Already a number of countries have taken key steps toward reducing and even eliminating the practice. This is largely thanks to the activists and organizations that have worked tirelessly on the issue. Researchers have sought alternative and more effective methods of testing new drugs. Lobbyists have stood up to government officials and held them accountable. Though the outlook is bright, we can’t afford to stop now. We must redouble the pressure by educating our communities and taking positive steps toward ending the suffering of millions of animals. 

Is Animal Testing Going to Stop?  

After years of battles over animal use in research, animal testing is likely on its way out. Internationally, the animal protection movement has risen up to increase public knowledge and kickstart action against animal testing. Already a number of countries have taken key steps to ban or reduce the practice within their borders. 

United States

Already the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has committed to eliminating funding for projects containing mammal testing by 2035. The EPA primarily funds the testing of chemicals that are introduced into the environment such as pesticides and fertilizers. This is one of the largest ever commitments on animal testing from the U.S. government. 

The National Institutes of Health (NIH), the world’s largest biomedical institution, has long been directed by the U.S. Congress to begin the phase-out of animal testing . The NIH, however, has made little progress toward achieving this goal. A recently introduce bill called the Humane Research and Testing Act of 2021 seeks to change that. If signed into law, the bill would create the National Center for Alternatives to Animals in Research and require that the NIH track the number of animals being used for research as well as their efforts to reduce that number. 

Progress toward the elimination of animal testing is also evident at the state level, where eight states including California, Hawai’i, and Virginia have banned cosmetic animal testing. The United States is progressing by leaps and bounds toward a future free of animal testing, though it remains behind a number of other countries. 

Israel has had a ban on animal testing for nonmedicinal cosmetics and household cleaning products since May 2007. In 2013, the country also placed a ban on the import and sale of cosmetics, detergents, and toiletries that had been tested on animals. Though the ban on sale and import does have some exceptions where there is no comparable alternative product, the ban is effective both on items and their ingredients. 

European Union 

Since the early 2000s, the European Union has had a ban on testing cosmetic products on animals. Since its initial passing, the ban has grown to include products with ingredients that have been tested on animals, and the import and sale of products that have been tested on animals. This ban is in place regardless of whether there is an alternative product available or not. 

Global Progress

Bans have been passed or proposed in a number of countries on every continent including Guatemala, Argentina, Australia, and South Korea. It seems that people everywhere are recognizing the unnecessary suffering that animal testing entails. 

What Happens if We Don’t Stop Animal Testing? 

There are numerous downsides associated with animal testing. Not least of these is the suffering of animals. However, the problems don’t stop there: every year millions of dollars are spent pursuing research that will fail in animal trials even though the drug could be highly effective in humans. 

Animal Suffering

Though the exact number of animals that endure testing every year is unknown due to a lack of reporting requirements, estimates suggest the number is in the tens of millions globally. The species that are most commonly used for research are mice, fish, and rats. However, a wide array of other species can also be found in labs including dogs, cats, apes, monkeys, horses, pigs, and sheep—just to name a few. 

Monetary Waste

Animal testing is extremely wasteful . Every year the United States federal government invests about $15 billion into research that involves the use of animals as subjects. Only 10 percent of the drugs being investigated successfully pass the animal testing phase of research and are deemed safe enough to move forward. 

Ineffective Trials

Using animals as models for human drugs is highly ineffective. In fact, a recent industry report found that fewer than 1 in 10 drugs that enter clinical trials in the U.S., which typically include animal testing, will ultimately be approved by the Food and Drug Administration. This is partly because a drug that is effective at treating a disease in mice or another animal will not necessarily treat the same disease in humans. 

Who Is Trying to Stop Animal Testing? 

There are a number of entities attempting to stop animal testing. These range from organizations to politicians and activists. Below is just a sample of individuals and groups working toward this end. 

National Anti-Vivisection Society (NAVS)

The National Anti-Vivisection Society was founded in 1929 to help bring an end to the inhumane and torturous acts that were performed against animals in the name of science. Since then they have continued to advocate for animals in every kind of research from cosmetics and drugs to classrooms. 

White Coat Waste Project

The White Coat Waste Project focuses on stopping animal research by ending access to government funding. Their team is made up of political strategists, scientists, advocates, and doctors that work together to hold government actors accountable for the wasteful nature of animal trials. 

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) 

With more than 175,000 members, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has been advocating for alternatives to animals in medical education and research since its founding in 1985. Their mission is to improve human and animal lives through ethical and effective research and plant-based diets. 

Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT)

The Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing is housed at Johns Hopkins and has an international branch in Germany. It supports the exploration, creation, and use of alternatives to animals in research, product testing, and education. 

Congressional Animal Protection Caucus

The U.S. Congress has the Congressional Animal Protection Caucus . The Caucus is nonpartisan and aims to educate the Members of Congress and their staff on the need for sensible animal protection legislation. Initiatives of the caucus members have included the introduction of legislation aiming to reduce animal testing. 

What Can We Do To Stop Animal Testing?

Consider leaving your body to science.

Perhaps one of the most impactful decisions we can make to aid both science and animals is to donate our bodies to science . Organs and tissues from an actual human body are invaluable for effective scientific research and medical education. Researchers have been able to make major breakthroughs for treating cancer, Alzheimer’s, and numerous other diseases because individuals made this vital decision. Donating our bodies also helps to ensure new medical professionals are ready to treat their patients effectively when they graduate as new doctors. 

Donating our bodies to science also prevents the harmful impacts of burial and cremation on the environment. Burial—which involves introducing toxic chemicals including formaldehyde into the environment and placing the chemical-filled carcass on a slab of concrete—is worse than cremation. However, cremating a body takes a massive amount of fuel. In fact, the average cremation uses the same amount of fuel as two tanks of gas. 

Educate Others

A key part of ending animal testing is making sure that our friends and family are aware of the issue. Having conversations with them helps to increase the number of people that are against animal testing. When people spend less money on products that have been tested on animals, that companies are more likely to stop the practice. An increase in the number of people speaking up about their distaste for animal testing can also translate into policy change at the state or even federal level. 

Donate to Stop Animal Testing 

There are a number of organizations that focus on eradicating or minimizing animal testing. Most of these are nonprofits that depend upon the donations of like-minded individuals to achieve their goals. Consider donating to one of the organizations listed above, or do some research to find a group in your community that shares the goal of ending animal testing. 

Only Buy Cruelty-Free Products

Perhaps one of the most impactful things we can do to end animal testing is to purchase cruelty-free products. This demonstrates to companies that there’s a demand for cosmetics and cleaning supplies that have not been tested on animals, making them more likely to reduce, and eventually eliminate, animal testing on their products. There are a number of online lists of cruelty-free brands and products to help with making the transition. Many cruelty-free products also display a bunny logo that identifies products as not being tested on animals. 

Speak Up About Classroom Dissection 

As concern over animal welfare grows, so does alarm at animal dissection in classrooms. As of 2015, 24 states allowed students to opt out of dissecting animals for their biology classes in favor of more humane methods of learning about anatomy and physiology. Not everyone is aware of this growing trend toward more merciful classrooms, which is why we must advocate for the animals to educators, students, and schools in our communities and ensure that every student has the option to choose compassion. 

The Road Ahead

Together we can end the suffering of animals in labs. The millions of animals that suffer in research labs every year around the world deserve better than to have their bodies used and discarded. The movement to end their needless suffering has been picking up steam over the last several years. Several countries have taken crucial steps toward reducing or eliminating animal testing within their borders. A number of organizations continue to pressure government officials, laboratories, and educators to stop causing so much unnecessary pain to animals. We must keep the pressure on by contributing in whatever way we can to stop animal testing.

Should Animals Be Used for Scientific or Commercial Testing?

Animals are used to develop medical treatments, determine the toxicity of medications, check the safety of products destined for human use, and other  biomedical , commercial, and health care uses. Research on living animals has been practiced since at least 500 BC.

Descriptions of the dissection of live animals have been found in ancient Greek writings from as early as circa 500 BC. Physician-scientists such as  Aristotle ,  Herophilus , and  Erasistratus  performed the experiments to discover the functions of living organisms.  Vivisection  (dissection of a living organism) was practiced on human criminals in ancient Rome and Alexandria, but prohibitions against mutilation of the human body in ancient Greece led to a reliance on animal subjects. Aristotle believed that animals lacked intelligence, and so the notions of justice and injustice did not apply to them.  Theophrastus , a successor to Aristotle, disagreed, objecting to the vivisection of animals on the grounds that, like humans, they can feel pain, and causing pain to animals was an affront to the gods. Pro & Con Arguments

Pro 1 Animal testing contributes to life-saving cures and treatments for humans and animals alike. Nearly every medical breakthrough in the last 100 years has resulted directly from research using animals, according to the California Biomedical Research Association. To name just a few examples, animal research has contributed to major advances in treating conditions including breast cancer, brain injury, childhood leukemia, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, and tuberculosis. Testing on animals was also instrumental in the development of pacemakers, cardiac valve substitutes, and anesthetics. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] [ 11 ] [ 12 ] [ 13 ] Scientists racing to develop a vaccine for coronavirus during the 2020 global pandemic needed to test on genetically modified mice to ensure that the vaccine did not make the virus worse. Nikolai Petrovsky, professor in the College of Medicine and Public Health at Flinders University in Australia, said testing a coronavirus vaccine on animals is “absolutely essential” and skipping that step would be “fraught with difficulty and danger.” [ 119 ] [ 133 ] Researchers have to test extensively to prevent “vaccine enhancement,” a situation in which a vaccine actually makes the disease worse in some people. “The way you reduce that risk is first you show it does not occur in laboratory animals,” explains Peter Hotez, Dean for the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College. [ 119 ] [ 141 ] Further, animals themselves benefit from the results of animal testing. Vaccines tested on animals have saved millions of animals that would otherwise have died from rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, infectious hepatitis virus, tetanus, anthrax, and canine parvo virus. Five Reasons to End Animal Testing

Dr. Thomas Hartung, a well-known toxicologist at Johns Hopkins University and advocate for the development of alternatives to the use of animals, as well as a mentor to a current NAVS/IFER fellowship recipient , recently published an article in ALTEX summarizing the main limitations of experimenting on animals. As Hartung notes, “[Animal experiments] come with shortcomings, and their true contribution is often overrated.”

Following are five reasons why scientists should stop relying so heavily on animal models:

• Animal experiments are not very reproducible . This often stems from lack of bias-reducing measures, poorly planned experiments, inappropriate statistical tests, poor reporting on animal attrition (why animals are dropped from studies) and poor reporting of pain relief in lab animals.
• Animal experiments are expensive and time consuming. Hartung notes that “costs and duration of toxicological studies are clearly prohibitive to satisfy societal safety needs,” in large part because animals are experimented on over a long period of time, during which researchers collect and analyze a lot of data to ensure that they are not missing any harmful effects. Using other approaches, such as cell-based models, could help scientists get results faster and cheaper.
• There are ethical concerns with animal experimentation. What entitles humans to experiment on animals and inflict pain upon them?
• Animal experiments are not even predictive of other animal species, let alone humans. Experiments performed in rats do not predict what happens in mice. Experiments in one strain of mice may not predict what is seen in another strain. Therefore, we shouldn’t assume that animals will be able to accurately predict what happens in humans.
• Animal models do not reflect human diversity . Even if animals could be predictive, to  which humans  would the data be accurately applied, considering the differences among humans?

Some in the scientific community have suggested investing more time and effort to improve the design of animal experiments, or even the animal models themselves, to address some of the issues raised above. But these resources would pay much higher dividends if they were directed to more human-relevant research, including work with human cell lines, stem cells and tissues, computational models, and even humans themselves.

Animal Testing Essay

There is a wide range of topics used in the IELTS writing test and many of them overlap. Today, we are going to look at a question that falls between the topics of animals and ethics and science. It will require you to write an animal testing essay .

In this article, I will analyse the question for you, give you some pointers on useful language, and then show you my own sample band 9 answer.

The Task: Animal Testing

Here is a question that appeared in the IELTS exam several years ago:

Some people claim that it is acceptable to use animals in medical research for the benefit of human beings, while other people argue that it is wrong. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

(Note that questions can be re-used or re-written, so it is possible that you might see this recycled in the future.)

This is a “discuss both views” question , so your task is ultimately to do three things:

• Explain why some people think animal testing is acceptable
• Explain why some people think animal testing is unacceptable
• Give your opinion

Even if you feel really strongly that it is wrong, for example, you still need to explain the opposing view. You don’t need to give a balanced answer , but you do need to acknowledge both sides of the debate. This is important for Task Response.

Planning your Answer

I almost always write a four-paragraph essay for my sample band 9 answers but today I’m going to write five. It could easily have been four paragraphs but I wanted to separate my anti-animal testing arguments into two separate paragraphs for better organisation. (You can read about 4- vs 5-paragraph essay structures here .)

My essay is going to look like this:

When it comes to a task 2 introduction , please make sure that you have a clear outline sentence and also that your opinion (if one is required) is stated clearly.

Body paragraph 1 will act as a sort of concession paragraph , so it will be imperative that I make it clear that this is not my opinion but rather what some other people think. If I fail to do this, then the reader might be confused.

The ideas in body paragraphs 2 and 3 will be separated but could also have been condensed into two paragraphs. However, I felt that for this topic it was a little more effective to split them. It also made my argument slightly more persuasive.

For the conclusion , I will be careful not to repeat myself too much and instead just summarise and reaffirm my stance.

Language for an Animal Testing Essay

The topic of animal testing is obviously controversial and so people will have different ideas. What you say will be largely based upon your own opinions. However, keep in mind that it covers those three topics I mentioned:

You don’t really need to know a lot about each, but it definitely would have some benefit if you knew a little about these areas and had some good vocabulary to use. I wrote about the IELTS topic of animals here , and there is plenty of good vocabulary that you can borrow. You can also search “animals” in the search bar at the top of the page.

I also recommend that you read and listen on issues that are related to IELTS topics like this. I particularly recommend the SYSK podcast episode on animal testing, which I think it is informative and accessible. You may learn some good language and get some inspiration for what you could write in your own animal testing essay. Other sources include this argument against animal testing by PETA and this one in favour of it by Stanford.

Language for Contentious Issues

In my essay, I will use the following phrases, which could be modified and applied to other contentious issues. I will put the specific language in brackets, so that you could swap it out when discussing other topics:

• [animal testing] has been fiercely debated due to the ethical problems inherent in this area of [science]
• The people who believe that [animal testing] is necessary tend to say…
• this is wrong for several reasons
• [animal testing] is not as helpful in [developing medicines] as people think
• There are many other reasons why [experimenting with animals] is wrong
• it is grossly unethical to [subject these creatures to painful and demeaning experiences]
• people may argue that there are benefits that come from [experimenting on animals], but in fact there is no good reason to continue doing this

Language about Animal Testing

The following phrases will also appear in my essay and can be used for talking about animal testing:

• this area of science
• animal testing should be banned
• testing medicines before using them on human beings
• figure out the cures to many serious illnesses
• Medicines that work on animals do not always work on humans
• if scientists give a mouse diabetes and then try various drugs to cure the problem
• subject these creatures to painful and demeaning experiences
• They are sentient beings
• subjected to cruel and often unnecessary experiments
• harmful both to humans and animals

It is also important to avoid repetition and that means finding ways to say “animal testing” without repeating the say words over and over. You could say:

• testing on animals
• experimenting on animals
• subjecting animals to medical experiments
• using animals in experiments

Again, it would be helpful to read articles and listen to podcasts on this topic in order to improve your vocabulary.

Sample Band 9 Answer

Over the past few decades, animal testing has been fiercely debated due to the ethical problems inherent in this area of science. This essay will look at both sides of the debate, before concluding that animal testing should be banned.

The people who believe that animal testing is necessary tend to say that there are serious benefits to humanity, such as testing medicines before using them on human beings. They believe that this will help to figure out the cures to many serious illnesses, which will make the world a better place for humans. However, this is wrong for several reasons.

Firstly, animal testing is not as helpful in developing medicines as people think. Medicines that work on animals do not always work on humans, and vice versa. As such, these trials are not just unnecessary but also profoundly unhelpful. For example, if scientists give a mouse diabetes and then try various drugs to cure the problem, they may find that there are twelve drugs that do not work on the mouse. However, maybe one of those drugs would have worked on a human. As such, animal testing would have caused more problems than it solved.

There are many other reasons why experimenting with animals is wrong. Perhaps most importantly, it is grossly unethical to subject these creatures to painful and demeaning experiences for the benefit of humanity. Animals do not exist for the benefit of people. They are sentient beings that deserve better than to be caged and subjected to cruel and often unnecessary experiments.

In conclusion, people may argue that there are benefits that come from experimenting on animals, but in fact there is no good reason to continue doing this. At best, these experiments are useless and at worst they are unethical and harmful both to humans and animals.

Final Notes

You can see that I have carefully crafted an argument that is strong. You may not agree with it, but it is hard to deny my points, which makes it effective in terms of Task Response. The structure is also solid and the ideas were well connected, making it very good in terms of Coherence and Cohesion . Note the inclusion of realistic and interesting ideas as well as concrete examples. My explanation of testing on mice was particularly effective here. It is better than giving some vague or unexplained idea.
