Introduction.
Lined paper, ruled paper or writing paper (whatever you call it) is a type of paper that features horizontal lines printed on it. The lines are aimed at separating the lines of your hand-written text in order to make it easy for you to write and then read the text. In comparison with the traditional blank piece of paper or dot grid paper, lined templates make your hand-writing look smooth and ordered.
These templates are often used for calligraphy, noting music, and writing. The simple reason why ruled templates are so useful and popular is that a lot of people aren't good enough at writing in a straight line without a guide. And it's no wonder why. Most of us are so used to typing the text with the keyboards that we totally forget how to write in the longhand.

If you are looking for free printable lined papers, this is the right place for you. I have here, free printable lined paper templates of straight lines and dotted lines in different row heights and colors for you to print and use, as many as you like.
These free printable lined paper templates (also often called ruled papers) can be put to a whole lot of good use. You can use them for school projects, as academic papers, to practice handwriting (for creative writing process), for writing out your grocery list or your to-do list. You can also print a stack of these templates and staple them together to make lined notebook.
Each free printable lined paper template comes in PDF format (can be opened with an Adobe reader). All you need to do is click on the printer icon on each template to open the print menu. If you choose the colored line pages, choose color option on your printer settings or menu. Otherwise, you can leave it black and white. Click on the print button to print your free pdf file templates.
What is Lined Paper?
Lined paper (also known as ruled paper) is simply a piece of paper with evenly spaced horizontal lines printed or drawn on it. As simple as it may sound, you can find a wide variety of lined paper in the market.
Most common lined papers or ruled papers come in the form of white paper with fine horizontal lines. The lines are mostly black or blue lines, but you can also find some in other different colors and in dotted line. Some even come with a red vertical line on the side.
Lined paper is often used in schools, colleges, kindergartens and also by professionals for formal write-ups. The lines serve as a guide to write and are perfect to practice handwriting among elementary school children. Lined papers are also great for practicing cursive writing.
Here are the factors you need to consider in choosing the free printables (paper templates):
Different line heights
- The wider the space between each line , the lesser lines you will get on your paper and the narrower the lines, the more lines you will get, which means you can write more on a single piece of paper.
- Wide ruled or lined papers are best for children who tend to write in bigger font sizes as compared to college students and adults. Having said that, wide lined papers are also suitable for people with generally large handwriting, vice versa.
Paper sizes
- The free printable paper templates I have on this page are for standard A4 sized sheets of paper.
Color of the lines and style
- Most of the templates on this page come with black lines. I also have some templates in blue lines.
- Some templates come in fine solid lines, while others are drawn in dotted lines and a combination of both.
Types of Lined Paper
Wide lined paper ( wide-ruled paper or legal paper) - these are templates with lines that are 8.7mm apart. In a typical A4 sized paper, you will get approximately 28 lines on a each sheet of paper.
Medium lined paper (medium-ruled paper or College paper) - these are templates with lines that are approximately 7.1mm wide. In a typical A4 sized paper, you will get 37 number of lines on each sheet of paper.
Narrow lined paper (narrow-ruled paper) - these are templates with the most number of horizontal lines. Each line is 6.35mm apart and there are a total of 53 lines on each sheet of paper.
Manuscript paper - There are 2 different types of manuscript paper. The first type is a writing template with groups of 3 lines known as penmanship paper. In this type of manuscript paper, the middle line of each of the group of 3 lines is in dotted form while the remaining top and bottom lines are in straight lines. This paper is perfect for children to practice handwriting. The other type of manuscript paper comes in groups of 5 lines . Also known as music paper , this type of manuscript paper is typically used to draw or write musical notes.
How to choose the free paper printables

In choosing the templates for printing, make sure you choose the type of template with the correct line height. Lined paper (or ruled paper) is writing paper composed of horizontal lines that separate lines of hand-written text. Additionally, this kind of paper may provide margins in the form of vertical lines. It is a good alternative for blank paper when it comes to writing, calligraphy, noting music or drawing graphs. For various reasons many people can not write in straight lines without it. Evenly spaced straight guides make for both easier writing and reading. In other words - they keep your writing straight. The type of ruling depands on the purpose of the paper or the style of handwriting. All types share the same layout that consists of equally spaced horizontal lines with optional vertical lines drawn to indicate margins or sections. The most common example is notebook paper that comes in many sizes and formats but it always has the same structure. It is of course easy to buy lined paper. But you may also easily generate your own printable lined paper. One of the reasons for doing that is flexibility. When you create it from scratch, you can control every aspect of it. If you need a specific margin size or spacing the paper that you need is only a few clicks away.
Ruled paper is something that we are all familiar with. In many cultures it is essential for learning to write by hand. Children in preschool, kindergarten and early elementary learn and practice handwriting using writing paper. It uses additional dotted line between two horizontal lines to help children position and scale characters properly. More sophisticated writing papers also provide a character spacer line that each numeral or letter is written within. As the students improve their skills they start using regular ruled paper with only two lined that separate lines of hand-written text. Later on vertical lines may be introduced to provide margins or to act as tab stops.
Music paper (also known as Manuscript paper o r staff paper ) may be seen as a special example of lined paper. It is paper preprinted with staves ready and is used when handwriting music. The most basic page is composed of a series of five-line staves, each spanning the width of the page.

Understanding Types of Lined Paper (Including 5 Lined Paper Printables)
Lined paper is definitely something we take for granted these days; it’s hard to believe there was a time when every lined piece of paper was ruled by hand. Do you know what type of lined paper you prefer? This post is all about lined paper. We’ll discuss the different types of ruled paper available and what each is used for. We’ll also share a number of downloadable lined paper printables.

Let’s make sure we don’t have our lines crossed and begin with a little lined paper history. 😅
What is Lined Paper?
Lined paper, also known as ruled paper, is paper printed with evenly-spaced horizontal lines in order for people to keep their handwriting linear and organized. The lines are usually blue and thin. Lined paper also often comes with two vertical lines on either side of the page, usually pink, to provide margins and tab stops.
Additional vertical lines may be used to create a grid for plotting data, such as graph paper, which is divided into squares by several evenly spaced vertical and horizontal lines.
Before paper was printed like this, the lines had to be drawn by hand. People either ruled their paper with a “hard point” or a “metal point.” A “hard point” was a sharp tool that left embossed lines on the paper without any ink or color. A “metal point” was a tool that left colored line marks on the paper, which looked similar to graphite, but other metals were used as well.
This went on for several centuries until 1770, when a man named John Tetlow received a patent for a line-drawing machine, which he called the “Tetlow,” named after himself. The British government described the device as a “ machine for ruling paper for music and other purposes. ”
Lined paper has evolved considerably since the 1770s and now comes in a wide variety of forms and types. Let’s discuss the different types of lined paper available and what each type is used for.
Types of Lined Paper
College Lined Paper
College lined paper, also known as college ruled paper, has 7.1 mm (9/32 inches) between its horizontal lines, and the vertical margin is 32 mm (1 ¼ inches) from the left-hand edge of the page. This is a very common form of lined paper. The lines are closer together to allow for more words on a single page.
It’s referred to as college lined paper to signify the writer’s maturity; they have ‘graduated’ from using wide lined paper and their handwriting is now smaller and more precise, so they don’t require the larger spacing provided by wide lined paper.

Narrow Lined Paper
Narrow lined paper has lines that are—you guessed it—closer together than other forms of lined paper. The lines on narrow lined paper are 6.4 mm (¼ inches) apart. It’s designed for people with very small handwriting and allows for more words on a single page.
It’s perfect for writing out all the ways you love your dog! Because that couldn’t possibly fit on a regular page!
Wide Lined Paper
Wide lined paper, also known as legal ruled paper, has wider lines than other forms of lined paper. Wide lined paper has 8.7 mm (11/32 inches) between its horizontal lines, and the vertical margin is 32 mm (1 ¼ inches) from the left-hand edge of the page. It’s often used by young students in elementary school to give them extra space as they learn to write numbers and letters, as well as by people who like to keep their handwriting big and bold.

Gregg Ruled Paper
Gregg ruled paper, developed by The Gregg Group , is specialized for stenography and shorthand writing. Shorthand writing is an abbreviated symbolic writing method designed to increase the speed and brevity of writing compared to longhand, which is the regular way we write. Many forms of shorthand exist, each with unique symbols and abbreviations of words and phrases that allow the writer to write as quickly as people speak.
Gregg ruled is three lines to the inch (11/32 inches), with a line down the center to divide the page into two columns—you write down the left side first and then switch to the right side. In courtrooms, stenographers used to have more columns on the page to denote when a new person started speaking.
While the use of shorthand in business, legal, and journalism recording has waned in recent years due to advancements in technology, it is still used as a personal tool.
Graph Paper
Graph paper, also known as grid paper, is paper that’s printed with vertical and horizontal criss crossing fine lines that make up a grid. These lines are most commonly used as guides for plotting graphs of functions or experimental data as well as for drawing curves. It’s commonly found in laboratory notebooks and engineering and mathematics education settings.
There are many different forms of graph paper, including quad paper, which is the most common form, featuring a grid printed in light blue or gray that extends right to the edge of the page.
Another form of graph paper is dot grid paper, which uses dots as intersections instead of grid lines. Dot grid paper has recently become popular for creating unique spreads in bullet journals.

Manuscript Paper
You may remember manuscript ruled paper from your childhood (if you can remember back that far 😅).
Manuscript paper, also known as handwriting paper, is designed to teach small children how to handwrite. The paper contains three lines in each set, and the middle line of each set is dotted. The space between these lines depends on the age of the group of children being taught. Lowercase letters (or, for example, the bottom part of the letter ‘d’) are written between the bottom line and the above dotted line. Uppercase letters occupy the entire space.

NPR in Turmoil After It Is Accused of Liberal Bias
An essay from an editor at the broadcaster has generated a firestorm of criticism about the network on social media, especially among conservatives.

NPR is facing both internal tumult and a fusillade of attacks by prominent conservatives this week after a senior editor publicly claimed the broadcaster had allowed liberal bias to affect its coverage, risking its trust with audiences.
Uri Berliner, a senior business editor who has worked at NPR for 25 years, wrote in an essay published Tuesday by The Free Press, a popular Substack publication, that “people at every level of NPR have comfortably coalesced around the progressive worldview.”
Mr. Berliner, a Peabody Award-winning journalist, castigated NPR for what he said was a litany of journalistic missteps around coverage of several major news events, including the origins of Covid-19 and the war in Gaza. He also said the internal culture at NPR had placed race and identity as “paramount in nearly every aspect of the workplace.”
Mr. Berliner’s essay has ignited a firestorm of criticism of NPR on social media, especially among conservatives who have long accused the network of political bias in its reporting. Former President Donald J. Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to argue that NPR’s government funding should be rescinded, an argument he has made in the past.
NPR has forcefully pushed back on Mr. Berliner’s accusations and the criticism.
“We’re proud to stand behind the exceptional work that our desks and shows do to cover a wide range of challenging stories,” Edith Chapin, the organization’s editor in chief, said in an email to staff on Tuesday. “We believe that inclusion — among our staff, with our sourcing, and in our overall coverage — is critical to telling the nuanced stories of this country and our world.” Some other NPR journalists also criticized the essay publicly, including Eric Deggans, its TV critic, who faulted Mr. Berliner for not giving NPR an opportunity to comment on the piece.
In an interview on Thursday, Mr. Berliner expressed no regrets about publishing the essay, saying he loved NPR and hoped to make it better by airing criticisms that have gone unheeded by leaders for years. He called NPR a “national trust” that people rely on for fair reporting and superb storytelling.
“I decided to go out and publish it in hopes that something would change, and that we get a broader conversation going about how the news is covered,” Mr. Berliner said.
He said he had not been disciplined by managers, though he said he had received a note from his supervisor reminding him that NPR requires employees to clear speaking appearances and media requests with standards and media relations. He said he didn’t run his remarks to The New York Times by network spokespeople.
When the hosts of NPR’s biggest shows, including “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered,” convened on Wednesday afternoon for a long-scheduled meet-and-greet with the network’s new chief executive, Katherine Maher , conversation soon turned to Mr. Berliner’s essay, according to two people with knowledge of the meeting. During the lunch, Ms. Chapin told the hosts that she didn’t want Mr. Berliner to become a “martyr,” the people said.
Mr. Berliner’s essay also sent critical Slack messages whizzing through some of the same employee affinity groups focused on racial and sexual identity that he cited in his essay. In one group, several staff members disputed Mr. Berliner’s points about a lack of ideological diversity and said efforts to recruit more people of color would make NPR’s journalism better.
On Wednesday, staff members from “Morning Edition” convened to discuss the fallout from Mr. Berliner’s essay. During the meeting, an NPR producer took issue with Mr. Berliner’s argument for why NPR’s listenership has fallen off, describing a variety of factors that have contributed to the change.
Mr. Berliner’s remarks prompted vehement pushback from several news executives. Tony Cavin, NPR’s managing editor of standards and practices, said in an interview that he rejected all of Mr. Berliner’s claims of unfairness, adding that his remarks would probably make it harder for NPR journalists to do their jobs.
“The next time one of our people calls up a Republican congressman or something and tries to get an answer from them, they may well say, ‘Oh, I read these stories, you guys aren’t fair, so I’m not going to talk to you,’” Mr. Cavin said.
Some journalists have defended Mr. Berliner’s essay. Jeffrey A. Dvorkin, NPR’s former ombudsman, said Mr. Berliner was “not wrong” on social media. Chuck Holmes, a former managing editor at NPR, called Mr. Berliner’s essay “brave” on Facebook.
Mr. Berliner’s criticism was the latest salvo within NPR, which is no stranger to internal division. In October, Mr. Berliner took part in a lengthy debate over whether NPR should defer to language proposed by the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association while covering the conflict in Gaza.
“We don’t need to rely on an advocacy group’s guidance,” Mr. Berliner wrote, according to a copy of the email exchange viewed by The Times. “Our job is to seek out the facts and report them.” The debate didn’t change NPR’s language guidance, which is made by editors who weren’t part of the discussion. And in a statement on Thursday, the Arab and Middle Eastern Journalists Association said it is a professional association for journalists, not a political advocacy group.
Mr. Berliner’s public criticism has highlighted broader concerns within NPR about the public broadcaster’s mission amid continued financial struggles. Last year, NPR cut 10 percent of its staff and canceled four podcasts, including the popular “Invisibilia,” as it tried to make up for a $30 million budget shortfall. Listeners have drifted away from traditional radio to podcasts, and the advertising market has been unsteady.
In his essay, Mr. Berliner laid some of the blame at the feet of NPR’s former chief executive, John Lansing, who said he was retiring at the end of last year after four years in the role. He was replaced by Ms. Maher, who started on March 25.
During a meeting with employees in her first week, Ms. Maher was asked what she thought about decisions to give a platform to political figures like Ronna McDaniel, the former Republican Party chair whose position as a political analyst at NBC News became untenable after an on-air revolt from hosts who criticized her efforts to undermine the 2020 election.
“I think that this conversation has been one that does not have an easy answer,” Ms. Maher responded.

Essay Contest: Nappert Prize in International Arbitration 2024

Thanks to the generosity of Sophie Nappert (BCL’86, LLB’86), the Nappert Prize in International Arbitration is celebrating 10 years since its inauguration in 2014. The prize will be awarded by McGill University for the sixth time in 2024.
Eligibility Requirements:
The competition is open to law students, junior scholars and junior practitioners from around the world. To be eligible for the prize, the authors must:
- be either currently enrolled in a B.C.L, LL.B., J.D., LL.M., D.C.L., or Ph.D. program (or their local equivalents), or
- have taken their most recent law degree within the last three years; or
- have been admitted to the practice of law for no more than three years.
Co-authored submissions are permissible, but each author must meet the eligibility criteria. (Kindly note that only one author will be flown to Montreal for the symposium.)
Previous winners of the Nappert Prize (2020 and 2022) are not eligible to submit their essays for this edition.
- First place: CAN $4,000
- Second place: CAN $2,000
- Third place: CAN $1,000
Winners of all three awards will be required to present their essays at a symposium to be held at McGill University’s Faculty of Law in Autumn 2024 (the expenses of the winners for attending the symposium will be covered).
The best oralist will receive an award of CAN $1,000.
The precise date of the symposium will be announced in the coming months.

All essays must be submitted by 30 th April 2024 11:59PM Eastern Time. Essays can be submitted using this form .
Submission Requirements:
Essays for the prize can be submitted in English, French or Spanish.
Please make sure that your essay:
- must relate to commercial or investment arbitration;
- must be unpublished (not yet submitted for publication) as of April 30 th ;
- must be a maximum of 15,000 words (including footnotes);
- must be formatted to Times New Roman Size 12 with 1.5 line spacing.
- should use OSCOLA or any other well-established legal citation guide (e.g. McGill Red Book; Bluebook);
- should be in MS Word format;
- should not contain your name or other information about your identity.
Submitted essays should not contain any text generated through advanced automated tools (artificial intelligence or machine learning tools such as ChatGPT), unless specifically required because of the subject matter of the essay and cited as mentioned below. Use of AI-generated text will be considered plagiarism, and any essay containing such text will be disqualified.
If the subject matter of the essay necessitates it, any AI-generated text in the submission should be properly cited. For example, text generated using ChatGPT-3 should include a citation such as:
Chat-GPT-3. (YYYY, Month DD of query). “Text of your query.” Generated using OpenAI. https://chat.openai.com/
Material generated using other tools should follow a similar citation format.

About 1 in 5 U.S. teens who’ve heard of ChatGPT have used it for schoolwork
Roughly one-in-five teenagers who have heard of ChatGPT say they have used it to help them do their schoolwork, according to a new Pew Research Center survey of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17. With a majority of teens having heard of ChatGPT, that amounts to 13% of all U.S. teens who have used the generative artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot in their schoolwork.
Teens in higher grade levels are particularly likely to have used the chatbot to help them with schoolwork. About one-quarter of 11th and 12th graders who have heard of ChatGPT say they have done this. This share drops to 17% among 9th and 10th graders and 12% among 7th and 8th graders.
There is no significant difference between teen boys and girls who have used ChatGPT in this way.
The introduction of ChatGPT last year has led to much discussion about its role in schools , especially whether schools should integrate the new technology into the classroom or ban it .
Pew Research Center conducted this analysis to understand American teens’ use and understanding of ChatGPT in the school setting.
The Center conducted an online survey of 1,453 U.S. teens from Sept. 26 to Oct. 23, 2023, via Ipsos. Ipsos recruited the teens via their parents, who were part of its KnowledgePanel . The KnowledgePanel is a probability-based web panel recruited primarily through national, random sampling of residential addresses. The survey was weighted to be representative of U.S. teens ages 13 to 17 who live with their parents by age, gender, race and ethnicity, household income, and other categories.
This research was reviewed and approved by an external institutional review board (IRB), Advarra, an independent committee of experts specializing in helping to protect the rights of research participants.

Teens’ awareness of ChatGPT
Overall, two-thirds of U.S. teens say they have heard of ChatGPT, including 23% who have heard a lot about it. But awareness varies by race and ethnicity, as well as by household income:
- 72% of White teens say they’ve heard at least a little about ChatGPT, compared with 63% of Hispanic teens and 56% of Black teens.
- 75% of teens living in households that make $75,000 or more annually have heard of ChatGPT. Much smaller shares in households with incomes between $30,000 and $74,999 (58%) and less than $30,000 (41%) say the same.
Teens who are more aware of ChatGPT are more likely to use it for schoolwork. Roughly a third of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT (36%) have used it for schoolwork, far higher than the 10% among those who have heard a little about it.
When do teens think it’s OK for students to use ChatGPT?
For teens, whether it is – or is not – acceptable for students to use ChatGPT depends on what it is being used for.
There is a fair amount of support for using the chatbot to explore a topic. Roughly seven-in-ten teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use when they are researching something new, while 13% say it is not acceptable.
However, there is much less support for using ChatGPT to do the work itself. Just one-in-five teens who have heard of ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to write essays, while 57% say it is not acceptable. And 39% say it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT to solve math problems, while a similar share of teens (36%) say it’s not acceptable.
Some teens are uncertain about whether it’s acceptable to use ChatGPT for these tasks. Between 18% and 24% say they aren’t sure whether these are acceptable use cases for ChatGPT.
Those who have heard a lot about ChatGPT are more likely than those who have only heard a little about it to say it’s acceptable to use the chatbot to research topics, solve math problems and write essays. For instance, 54% of teens who have heard a lot about ChatGPT say it’s acceptable to use it to solve math problems, compared with 32% among those who have heard a little about it.
