When I imagine my ideal classroom environment, the autonomy and independence of my students is a major feature.  Even though my school is quite small and the teacher/student ratios tend to average around 10:1, I have found that I still have the tendency (as do my colleagues) to talk at my students rather than talk to them.  I often become very invested in my curriculum, to the exclusion of other learning opportunities.  This problem extends to the relationship that my students’ parents have with our school environment.  I will tell my students that their parents should become more involved in our classroom activities without really considering what that means.  In a sense, I’m merely playing lip service to the notion of parent involvement.  This is especially easy to do at my school because the majority of our parents are busy, affluent professionals who only get involved in the school environment when something is wrong.

I would like to create an atmosphere in which parents are involved in the classroom when their children are doing things ‘right’, but it’s difficult to figure out a way to accomplish this in a productive way.  While there aren’t a lot of cultural barriers (that I’m aware of) to impede parental involvement, I find that the biggest obstacle to getting parents invested in the literacy (and other) goals of their children lies in the way parents view the parent/teacher/student relationship.  Most of my students are high-performing and I have few discipline problems in the classroom.  When students have academic difficulties, their parents are more likely to hire a tutor than come into school to speak to me about how they can best help their children.  While I don’t mean to judge or complain about my students’ parents, they seem to come from a place where they are used to delegating tasks and are very focused on concrete learning goals rather than the overall learning experience.  For example, we get a high level of parental involvement when we hold college application information night, but much less of a turnout when we had a literacy fair last year.  The general attitude (with the exception of a few core parents who are deeply involved in the school) seems to be:  don’t bother me unless my kid is in danger of flunking out/not getting into a good college.

This sends a terrible message to my students, I think.  In trying to come up with a classroom action plan to strengthen family involvement, I asked some of my senior English students how they thought their parents could be encouraged to take a more active role in the classroom.  Overwhelmingly, they responded with apathy, and several of them stated that they didn’t think their parents cared very much about the day-to-day aspects of their school experience.  I am really baffled as to how I can develop a better relationship with my students’ parents so as to demonstrate to them that they can play a pivotal role in their children’s literacy and overall scholastic achievement.  The best I’ve been able to come up with so far is to remain very concrete and goal oriented (which they seem to prefer), perhaps using statistics to show them that students with involved parents do better on their SATs and college applications and are therefore better able to get into good colleges and find good jobs post-college.  These are the types of things that seem to motivate the majority of my students’ parents, so I may have to tailor my approach to meet their interests.

Community-Centered –School structures and practices that work to create a community of learners within the school that will support the learning of all students.

Emotionally Safe Classrooms –A classroom environment in which the teacher has created a supportive and responsive culture which encourages independent thinking and intellectual risk-taking because students know that they won’t be punished for speaking their minds.

Learning Communities –Classroom or school environments in which students work together using group projects or collaborative activities to build both their knowledge and their sense of how to apply this knowledge in real-world settings.

Overlearning –The practice of studying and practicing material after it has already been mastered.

Prejudice Reduction –Interventions employed by the teacher or school to assist students in developing positive values and attitudes towards race.

Zone of Proximal Development –Information or skills that are considered the ‘next step’ for students based on their development and the tasks that they have already mastered.  This type of education is intended to give students tasks that challenge them while not being so difficult as to discourage them from attempting or completing the task.

What is Your Ideal Classroom?

Back to School is here and there is no stopping it, even as we negotiate masks and vaccinations. Not to fear! We are educators, and we can do hard things! If you will be returning to a brick & mortar classroom, this blog provides some fresh ideas.  

The beginning of a new school year is the perfect opportunity to redefine how your classroom looks and operates ensuring the space is effective and efficient. In previous eras, classrooms were designed around “chalk and talk,” or the “sage on the stage,” teaching. But, over time, teaching and learning have evolved. Best pedagogical practices and research inform us that students learn best when teachers are a “guide on the side,” or “teach between the desks.”  

Here are suggestions for creating a classroom that flows with efficiency! 

1. Keep materials ready and abundant- including books so students can engage in casual reading whenever they have time.

2. Create a place where students can meet and feel secure. Students learn from each other and need a consistent environment where face-to-face interactions happen organically. Most of our communication is through body language, so providing students with opportunities to work together improves students’ EQ (Emotional Quotient).

3. Classroom technology should be nimble and easy to access.

4. For students who are tech-savvy, consider a mentor-mentee model with those who have more experience offering support to those who have less.

5. Think through placing your teacher desk at the back of the room to reinforce your role as a guide and encourager.

2. Ask students to draw pictures of how they would like their classroom organized.

Throughout the school year, the four walls of a classroom encapsulate life-changing interactions between the teacher and their students. A classroom typically takes on the  personality of the teacher . Though similarities are prevalent in every classroom, no two classrooms are exactly the same.

35 Components of an Ideal Classroom

Every teacher will have a slightly different version of the ideal classroom, but common elements do exist. It is in these commonalities that you often find a true representation of characteristics found in the ideal classroom.

• The ideal classroom ……….is student-centered meaning that the teacher is the facilitator of learning built on student interests and abilities. The teacher rarely lectures or uses worksheets, but instead provides students with engaging, authentic learning opportunities.
• The ideal classroom ……….is a display center for student made learning posters, artwork, and other exemplary work.
• The ideal classroom ……….is well organized so that teachers and students can utilize the resources in the room quickly and efficiently.
• The ideal classroom ……….provides students with a safe zone where they feel comfortable and can temporarily escape any problems they are dealing with at home.
• The ideal classroom ………. has structure or a specified set of procedures and expectations that everyone follows.
• The ideal classroom ……….has a teacher who always addresses their students in a positive manner. They treat their students fairly and maintain the dignity of the student when addressing discipline issues.
• The ideal classroom ……….has an open door policy where parents and community members are encouraged to participate actively in daily activities and lessons.
• The ideal classroom ……….. embraces technology and regularly integrates aspects of technology into lessons.
• The ideal classroom ……….provides regular authentic learning opportunities where active, hands-on learning is a standard classroom practice.
• The ideal classroom ……….is one where teachable moments are embraced. The teacher realizes that value learning opportunities exist beyond simple rote learning and takes advantage of those opportunities.
• The ideal classroom ……….embraces modeling and independent practice as a critical learning tool. The teacher models new skills and then allows students to practice these newly acquired skills independently.
• The ideal classroom ……….allows students to work cooperatively on learning projects. Students are taught to create a plan, assign tasks, and then to bring everything together to complete the project.
• The ideal classroom ……….has a teacher who is not afraid to experiment. They are continuously searching for ideas to boost learning and regularly tweaks previously used lessons to meet the needs of their current students.
• The ideal classroom ……….incorporates a variety of proven instructional strategies throughout the school year. The teacher exposes students to a wide range of strategies so that multiple learning styles are addressed on a regular basis.
• The ideal classroom ……….is one where respect is a core value . Teachers and students understand that respect is a two-way street. Everyone is respectful of others thoughts and feelings.
• The ideal classroom ……….is amicable. Students and teachers may disagree from time to time, but they respect each other’s opinions and listen to the other side without passing judgment.
• The ideal classroom ……….embraces accountability. Students are taught self-discipline and hold each other accountable when they make a mistake.
• The ideal classroom ……….embraces individual diversity and differences. Students are not only taught to value differences but that all individuals bring real value to the classroom because they are different.
• The ideal classroom ……….is not limited to the four walls of the classroom. The same principles applied in the classroom are extended to all areas of the school as well as all school activities.
• The ideal classroom ……….encourages all students to participate actively in every learning activity. Each student brings value to the learning process and thus are expected to pull their weight in each and every activity.
• The ideal classroom ……….is content driven meaning that students are minimally taught the concepts and requirements per grade level and subject area.
• The ideal classroom ……….is data-driven. The teacher pulls data from multiple sources to paint an accurate portrait of individual student needs. The teacher then creates individualized learning opportunities to meet the specific needs of each student in their class.
• The ideal classroom ……….provides sequential learning opportunities allowing students to connect new learning experiences to prior learning experiences. It also allows students to begin to look forward to learning that is on the horizon.
• The ideal classroom ……….allows students to tap into individual talents and creativity. Students are encouraged to individualize learning projects by putting their own unique or creative spin on them.
• The ideal classroom ............is built on high expectations.  No one is allowed just to get by. The teacher and students expect maximum effort and participation in every class activity.
• The ideal classroom ……….is one that students look forward to going to. They anticipate new learning opportunities and look forward to seeing the adventure that each day brings.
• The ideal classroom ……….is made up of fewer than eighteen students, but more than ten students.
• The ideal classroom ……….teaches students more than what is required. Students are taught valuable life lessons and skills. They are encouraged to begin to establish a plan for their future.
• The ideal classroom ……….provides students with clear and concise directions in both verbal and written form. Students are given an opportunity to ask questions before, during, and after a task for clarification.
• The ideal classroom ………..has an ongoing, collaborative and engaging dialog where students share their expertise and experiences on the topic at hand. Teachers are facilitators who guide the discussion, but who ensure students are engaged throughout the discussion.
• The ideal classroom ……….has plenty of educational resources including up-to-date textbooks , supplemental learning tools, technology, and a comprehensive classroom library.
• The ideal classroom ……….provides every student with one-on-one instruction on a daily basis to meet individualized learning needs.
• The ideal classroom ……….has a teacher who makes adjustments as needed. The teacher takes the time to re-teach concepts when necessary and recognizes when individual students are struggling and provides them with extra assistance when needed.
• The ideal classroom ……….is full of students focused on learning. They are goal oriented and refuse to be a distraction for their classmates. They love learning and realize that a good education is a means to an end.
• The ideal classroom ………..prepares students for the future. Students not only advance to the next grade level but do so with the tools and abilities to be successful.

An ideal classroom environment has three individual aspects that work together to make the student succeed: the instructor, the classroom, and the students. The instructor is key in creating a positive learning environment. A classroom with a good layout facilitates learning and success. Lastly, it is essential that students are ready and willing to learn and participate in class. These are the building blocks of an ideal classroom environment.

First, the instructor needs to be knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. If the instructor lacks passion it is impossible to get the students to be passionate about learning the subject. A professor with passion about the subject will capture the student’s attention. Additionally, the instructor needs to care about student learning. When I have a professor who genuinely cares about my education, I am more likely to visit the professor in office hours to get help or ask questions during class. These are the professors who push their students to do the best work they can, but they also readily adapt their instruction to meet the needs of their students. These professors recognize when the class is struggling on a certain concept and take the time to make it clearer. They will provide students with multiple resources to promote mastering the subject. They are approachable and never degrade a student who does not understand. These qualities allow students to be successful in the classroom.

Secondly, the layout of the classroom is important. For example, a large lecture hall with hundreds of seats is not ideal. It is easy to get distracted because you know the professor cannot see you rows back playing on your phone. For me, it is ideal to be in a classroom with less than forty people. This allows a more personal approach to education. With less people, I am more likely to pay attention and there is a greater chance of my professor getting to know me on a personal level. In addition, I think that a classroom layout that easily allows group work is important. Working in groups allows me to learn not only from the professor, but also from other students.

Lastly, the ideal classroom needs to have students who are willing to actively participate in class. When other students genuinely care about the class, it is motivation for me to care too. Often other students will ask questions that I had not thought of before. When a professor lectures all hour without student participation the class can get boring quickly. However, other students who care about succeeding help me succeed in my education too.

A passionate, caring instructor, a classroom layout that minimizes distractions, and student participation are essential in creating my ideal classroom environment. Each of these aspects helps me succeed in my education.

A classroom is a learning place where we learn academic and social skills. The classroom plays an essential role in the overall development of an individual. The school teachings help us develop into good human beings both for educational and social purposes.

My classroom is situated opposite the principal's room. There is a big garden in between them. In our free time, we see the children playing basketball, Kho-kho, badminton etc. In my classroom, there is a notice board which is decorated by us. We have decorated the board with motivational quotes, names of students of the class and their birthdays. My classroom is considered one of the beautiful classrooms of the school.

My classroom is situated near the school library on the ground floor. So, whenever there is a free period, we go to the library and read our favourite books and newspapers. Also, there is a big garden in front of my classroom. The mango tree near the classroom window provides summer shade and cool air. We can hear the chirping of birds in the classroom. Thus, my classroom is in a beautiful location that provides a natural feeling.

My Classroom - An Enjoyable place

My classroom has two enormous windows and a big door, and it is pretty enjoyable, roomy, airy, and ventilated due to the presence of many trees. A large whiteboard and four ceiling fans are present. We write a quote on the whiteboard daily which motivates us to do best in our lives. My classroom has several artworks that are well-decorated on the walls. We decorated the walls with maps, charts, and images of flowers, trees, and the solar system. The decent environment of my classroom motivates me to go there daily.

Another reason I enjoy my class is the teacher, who is always so kind and encourages us to participate in various activities. She always motivates us to participate in competitions with the management of studies. She inspires us to be perfect both in academic as well as extracurricular activities.

My classroom is different from the whole school. This is because various students in my classroom are best in various fields. The sports students always bring medals in state and national level tournaments. Every year, the school, as well as state toppers, come from my classroom.

My Classroom Experience

I like enjoying nature and love to spend time in nature. The natural environment of my classroom gives me the same feeling as many beautiful flowers and trees are in front of my classroom. I have also grown some of them.

I love to decorate the classroom walls with beautiful crafts and academic charts. Also, there is a knowledge wall where I paste important current affairs newspaper cuttings daily. During the festive seasons, I also give my contribution to class decoration. I decorate the classroom with rangoli, light diyas and candles on Diwali. I also participate in quizzes and essay competitions. Thus, the classroom is a precious memory for me.

A classroom is the soul of every student. We will always remember this place as being unforgettably memorable. What we become in real life is shaped by school. It had a fantastic effect on students for the rest of their lives. All of us enjoy ourselves a lot in school. The relevance of the classroom for students and youngsters is beyond words. Essay on my ideal classroom set up for elementary school children. My ideal classroom is not entirely, but almost based on fun. My main objective is to have kids come into my class room and feeling that Ms. English’s classroom is a whole lot of fun. Not only do I want my classroom to be fun, but I also want it to be a special place for all of my children. My ideal classroom would have all of the services for all of my children to learn, grow, and thrive. At the same time, I want my classroom to be simple and not too busy. I feel a busy classroom tends to make children feel overwhelmed and more easily distracted.

As far as seating arrangements go I would have to be with my class for at least a full week to figure out the configurations of the classroom. I would most likely situate the children in a group format so that they can socialize and interact with each other. I would form this group configuration based on my observations on who works well together and where the distractions originate from etc. My desk would be situated where I could see all of my students. If I were to get a Kindergarten classroom I would probably situate the seats in a group setting or large tables. If I had a third grade classroom I would definitely have a big group meeting mat where everyone can gather around during class meetings. I would also make sure to have comfortable chairs and a big couch for children to grab books and read. I want my students to have a comfortable place where they can read and relax. This furniture would be situated right next to my library area. I would have a huge library for my students. The bigger the library, the more books and you can never have enough books in a classroom.

Next to the computer station I would love to have a science center where children can work directly with their hands. I want a “hands-on” center where children can try new things and learn about animals and plants etc. I think it would be fun for my students to learn and at the same time just “fool” around with all the neat science “stuff.” A “quiet” area is another part of my ideal classroom. I think a quiet area would be very beneficial for my students. I would try and enclose a couple of desks off in a corner with bookshelves for any children who need some alone or work time.

My classroom would also have many visuals. I want every part of my classroom to be learning aides. The children should learn from what I put on the walls. I would have many signs up for the different centers and put up the alphabet (in Murray format of course), drawings, pictures, colors, numbers, shapes, basically everything to cater to the grade level that I teach. I would also make sure that I cater to any of the special needs students that I probably will have.

This write up of my ideal classroom is obviously not perfect; however, I feel that it is an adequate sketch of how I would visualize my own classroom. I think being in the actual environment, and getting to know your students, along with learning from experience on what works and what doesn’t is what will help me set up my classroom.

Get tech out of the classroom before it’s too late.

Jaime Lewis noticed that her eighth-grade son’s grades were slipping several months ago. She suspected it was because he was watching YouTube during class on his school-issued laptop, and her suspicions were validated. “I heard this from two of his teachers and confirmed with my son: Yes, he watches YouTube during class, and no, he doesn’t think he can stop. In fact, he opted out of retaking a math test he’d failed, just so he could watch YouTube,” she said.

She decided to do something about it. Lewis told me that she got together with other parents who were concerned about the unfettered use of school-sanctioned technology in San Luis Coastal Unified School District, their district in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Because they knew that it wasn’t realistic to ask for the removal of the laptops entirely, they went for what they saw as an achievable win: blocking YouTube from students’ devices. A few weeks ago, they had a meeting with the district superintendent and several other administrators, including the tech director.

To bolster their case, Lewis and her allies put together a video compilation of clips that elementary and middle school children had gotten past the district’s content filters.

Their video opens on images of nooses being fitted around the necks of the terrified women in the TV adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” It ends with the notoriously violent “Singin’ in the Rain” sequence from “A Clockwork Orange.” (Several versions of this scene are available on YouTube. The one she pointed me to included “rape scene” in the title.) Their video was part of a PowerPoint presentation filled with statements from other parents and school staff members, including one from a middle school assistant principal, who said, “I don’t know how often teachers are using YouTube in their curriculum.”

That acknowledgment gets to the heart of the problem with screens in schools. I heard from many parents who said that even when they asked district leaders how much time kids were spending on their screens, they couldn’t get straight answers; no one seemed to know, and no one seemed to be keeping track.

Eric Prater, the superintendent of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District, told me that he didn’t realize how much was getting through the schools’ content filters until Lewis and her fellow parents raised concerns. “Our tech department, as I found out from the meeting, spends quite a lot of time blocking certain websites,” he said. “It’s a quite time-consuming situation that I personally was not aware of.” He added that he’s grateful this was brought to his attention.

I don’t think educators are the bad guys here. Neither does Lewis. In general, educators want the best for students. The bad guys, as I see it, are tech companies.

One way or another, we’ve allowed Big Tech’s tentacles into absolutely every aspect of our children’s education, with very little oversight and no real proof that their devices or programs improve educational outcomes. Last year Collin Binkley at The Associated Press analyzed public records and found that “many of the largest school systems spent tens of millions of dollars in pandemic money on software and services from tech companies, including licenses for apps, games and tutoring websites.” However, he continued, schools “have little or no evidence the programs helped students.”

It’s not just waste, very likely, of taxpayer money that’s at issue. After reading many of the over 900 responses from parents and educators to my questionnaire about tech in schools and from the many conversations I had over the past few weeks with readers, I’m convinced that the downsides of tech in schools far outweigh the benefits.

Though tech’s incursion into America’s public schools — particularly our overreliance on devices — hyperaccelerated in 2020, it started well before the Covid-19 pandemic. Google, which provides the operating system for lower-cost Chromebooks and is owned by the same parent company as YouTube, is a big player in the school laptop space, though I also heard from many parents and teachers whose schools supply students with other types and brands of devices.

As my newsroom colleague Natasha Singer reported in 2017 (by which point “half the nation’s primary- and secondary-school students” were, according to Google, using its education apps), “Google makes $30 per device by selling management services for the millions of Chromebooks that ship to schools. But by habituating students to its offerings at a young age, Google obtains something much more valuable”: potential lifetime customers.

The issue goes beyond access to age-inappropriate clips or general distraction during school hours. Several parents related stories of even kindergartners reading almost exclusively on iPads because their school districts had phased out hard-copy books and writing materials after shifting to digital-only curriculums. There’s evidence that this is harmful: A 2019 analysis of the literature concluded that “readers may be more efficient and aware of their performance when reading from paper compared to screens.”

“It seems to be a constant battle between fighting for the students’ active attention (because their brains are now hard-wired for the instant gratification of TikTok and YouTube videos) and making sure they aren’t going to sites outside of the dozens they should be,” Nicole Post, who teaches at a public elementary school in Missouri, wrote to me. “It took months for students to listen to me tell a story or engage in a read-aloud. I’m distressed at the level of technology we’ve socialized them to believe is normal. I would give anything for a math or social studies textbook.”

I’ve heard about kids disregarding teachers who tried to limit tech use, fine motor skills atrophying because students rarely used pencils and children whose learning was ultimately stymied by the tech that initially helped them — for example, students learning English as a second language becoming too reliant on translation apps rather than becoming fluent.

Some teachers said they have programs that block certain sites and games, but those programs can be cumbersome. Some said they have software, like GoGuardian, that allows them to see the screens of all the students in their classes at once. But classroom time is zero sum: Teachers are either teaching or acting like prison wardens; they can’t do both at the same time.

Resources are finite. Software costs money . Replacing defunct or outdated laptops costs money . When it comes to I.T., many schools are understaffed . More of the money being spent on tech and the maintenance and training around the use of that tech could be spent on other things, like actual books. And badly monitored and used tech has the most potential for harm.

I’ve considered the counterarguments: Kids who’d be distracted by tech would find something else to distract them; K-12 students need to gain familiarity with tech to instill some vague work force readiness.

But on the first point, I think other forms of distraction — like talking to friends, doodling and daydreaming — are better than playing video games or watching YouTube because they at least involve children engaging with other children or their own minds. And there’s research that suggests laptops are uniquely distracting . One 2013 study found that even being next to a student who is multitasking on a computer can hurt a student’s test scores.

On the second point, you can have designated classes to teach children how to keyboard, code or use software that don’t require them to have laptops in their hands throughout the school day. And considering that various tech companies are developing artificial intelligence that, we’re meant to understand, will upend work as we know it , whatever tech skills we’re currently teaching will probably be obsolete by the time students enter the work force anyway. By then, it’ll be too late to claw back the brain space of our nation’s children that we’ve already ceded. And for what? So today’s grade schoolers can be really, really good at making PowerPoint presentations like the ones they might one day make as white-collar adults?

That’s the part that I can’t shake: We’ve let tech companies and their products set the terms of the argument about what education should be, and too many people, myself included, didn’t initially realize it. Companies never had to prove that devices or software, broadly speaking, helped students learn before those devices had wormed their way into America’s public schools. And now the onus is on parents to marshal arguments about the detriments of tech in schools.

Holly Coleman, a parent of two who lives in Kansas and is a substitute teacher in her district, describes what students are losing:

They can type quickly but struggle to write legibly. They can find info about any topic on the internet but can’t discuss that topic using recall, creativity or critical thinking. They can make a beautiful PowerPoint or Keynote in 20 minutes but can’t write a three-page paper or hand-make a poster board. Their textbooks are all online, which is great for the seams on their backpack, but tangible pages under your fingers literally connect you to the material you’re reading and learning. These kids do not know how to move through their day without a device in their hand and under their fingertips. They never even get the chance to disconnect from their tech and reconnect with one another through eye contact and conversation.

Jonathan Haidt’s new book, “The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illness,” prescribes phone-free schools as a way to remedy some of the challenges facing America’s children. I agree that there’s no place for smartphones on a K-12 campus. But if you take away the phones and the kids still have near-constant internet connectivity on devices they have with them in every class, the problem won’t go away.

When Covid hit and screens became the only way for millions of kids to “attend” school, not having a personal device became an equity issue. But we’re getting to a point where the opposite may be true. According to the responses to my questionnaire, during the remote-school era, private schools seemed to rely far less on screens than public schools, and many educators said that they deliberately chose lower-tech school environments for their own children — much the same way that some tech workers intentionally send their kids to screen-free schools.

We need to reframe the entire conversation around tech in schools because it’s far from clear that we’re getting the results we want as a society and because parents are in a defensive crouch, afraid to appear anti-progress or unwilling to prepare the next generation for the future. “I feel like a baby boomer attacking like this,” said Lewis.

But the drawbacks of constant screen time in schools go beyond data privacy, job security and whether a specific app increases math performance by a standard deviation. As Lewis put it, using tech in the classroom makes students “so passive, and it requires so little agency and initiative.” She added, “I’m very concerned about the species’ ability to survive and the ability to think critically and the importance of critical thinking outside of getting a job.”

If we don’t hit pause now and try to roll back some of the excesses, we’ll be doing our children — and society — a profound disservice.

The good news is that sometimes when the stakes become clear, educators respond: In May, Dr. Prater said, “we’re going to remove access to YouTube from our district devices for students.” He added that teachers will still be able to get access to YouTube if they want to show instructional videos. The district is also rethinking its phone policy to cut down on personal device use in the classroom. “For me,” he said, “it’s all about how do you find the common-sense approach, going forward, and match that up with good old-fashioned hands-on learning?” He knows technology can cause “a great deal of harm if we’re not careful.”
