Lily cole, actress, social campaigner and national geographic uk guest editor, reveals how modern technology can help us build a better future and why putting down her smart phone remains one of her biggest challenges..

Not long ago, Lily Cole received a hand-written letter in the post. These days, that’s curious enough. Even more curious was the message it contained. It was from a friend of hers called Mark Boyle, informing her he had decided to abandon technology in all its forms. Boyle now lives off the grid in an old house in County Galway, in the west of Ireland.

Boyle had previously lived for three years without money and it was that legacy which first connected him to Cole, when she co-founded Impossible.com as an online gift economy to connect strangers in cities.

In preparation for her guest editorship of this issue of National Geographic, she wrote back to Boyle, quizzing him about his eschewal of technology, and the effect on his life. (Telephone calls or email were obviously impossible.) At the time of this interview, the delays of the international postal system meant she still hadn’t received a reply.

Pros and Cons of Modern Technology

Like all of us (except for the Mark Boyles of this world), Cole appreciates the pros and cons of modern technology. But this actress and social campaigner admits there’s always a love-hate relationship at play. She uses her mobile phone as an example.

“I’m potentially addicted to it,” she says. “Of course, there are enormous benefits to mobile phones but it’s crucial we all stop to question the role of digital technology in our lives and how it impacts our brains and our lifestyles.”

On the rare days she kicks the habit and turns her phone off, Cole finds herself thinking about unread messages, or emails she should send. At the same time, however, she notices an improvement in her mental state. “If I’m on holiday and I haven’t had reception for a few days, I feel much calmer. Is there one particular part of the brain we use when we’re on our phones or computers? If so, I worry we’re over-using that part of our brains.”

Cole compares digital technology temptation to the lure of food. “Imagine if food had been invented only 28 years ago, when the internet was invented. Yes, food is important and you need it to survive, but you wouldn’t consume all day long, as we do our mobile phones. Perhaps–as Mark Boyle puts it–we are technologically obese.”

Renewable Technology

Impossible has since diversified its tech offering, and one project they have collaborated on is a smartphone called the Fairphone, which is built from ethically-sourced materials, easily repaired and with replaceable modules.

Fairphone is careful to only use conflict free minerals in their supply chain, and its modular proposition means that you don’t have to upgrade and replace the phone every year or two. But, crucially, Impossible designed a feature that reminds owners how long it is since they last used it. “It encourages people to cut back on their usage time.”

Cole is excited by the possibilities technology might offer for smart cities–where digital technology enables the city’s infrastructure to operate more efficiently. She reels off potential benefits such as automatically staggering energy use in domestic homes to avoid energy surges; or self-driving electric cars and car-sharing services.

Cole believes it’s not too unrealistic to imagine that, in the coming years, we’ll see autonomous flying cars in the cities’ skies. “They’ll be part of mainstream public transport,” she predicts, aware that right now it sounds like the backdrop to a sci-fi movie.

Simple life

“Don’t get me wrong, I would love for everyone to do a Mark Boyle: move to the wilderness to live a simpler life closer to nature, but as our global population continues to grow at a rate of 240,000 additional people a day, cities will inevitably get denser and we need to make adaptations for that. The sky maybe the only place with any space left.”

A few days after this interview Cole received a letter back from Boyle; hand-written, in pencil, of course. It turns out he has been living without technology for over a year now. “Language, an axe, smartphones, sex robots, even this pencil I write with could all be considered technologies,” he writes.

“I no longer wish to use industrial-scale technology–things that I couldn't possibly make from the landscape I’m trying to live as part of; things that discourage me from developing a direct and immediate relationship with the life–human and non-human–that surrounds me.”

So Boyle has abandoned electricity, gas, oil, solar power and running water. He has no car, no phone, no internet access, no fridge, no freezer. His reasons for such a drastic change in lifestyle?

Impact of Industrialism

“The political ideology of industrialism is driving the mass extinction of species, wiping out tribal peoples–and their languages, cultures, ways, perspectives–while creating a toxic biosphere,” he adds.

“Whether you use your smart phone or laptop once a day, or fifty times, its initial production requires oil rigs, quarries, mines, factories, armies to enforce international contracts, deforestation, bottom-trawling, transport networks and everything else required to feed and support the industrial economy required for their production.”

“Technology also separates us from the natural world and our immediate community. I hear many people spend more time in bed touching and playing with their smart phones, than their lovers,” he concludes.

Life values

It’s a notion Cole has much sympathy for. She appreciates “all the amazing positive things that technology can do”, but warns “we have to be mindful that there can be as many negative effects”.

“We shouldn't blindly, naively carry on with life as normal, assuming that technology will save us,” she adds. “Perhaps we need to prioritise making changes to our values and behaviour patterns whilst developing all this fancy technology.”

What makes technology good or bad for us, how technology affects our well-being partly depends on whether it strengthens our relationships..

Everyone’s worried about smartphones. Headlines like “ Have smartphones destroyed a generation? ” and “ Smartphone addiction could be changing your brain ” paint a bleak picture of our smartphone addiction and its long-term consequences. This isn’t a new lament—public opinion at the advent of the newspaper worried that people would forego the stimulating pleasures of early-morning conversation in favor of reading the daily .

Is the story of technology really that bad? Certainly there’s some reason to worry. Smartphone use has been linked to serious issues, such as dwindling attention spans , crippling depression , and even increased incidence of brain cancer . Ultimately, though, the same concern comes up again and again: Smartphones can’t be good for us, because they’re replacing the real human connection of the good old days.

Everyone’s heard how today’s teens just sit together in a room, texting, instead of actually talking to each other. But could those teenagers actually be getting something meaningful and real out of all that texting?

The science of connection

A quick glance at the research on technology-mediated interaction reveals an ambivalent literature. Some studies show that time spent socializing online can decrease loneliness , increase well-being , and help the socially anxious learn how to connect to others. Other studies suggest that time spent socializing online can cause loneliness , decrease well-being , and foster a crippling dependence on technology-mediated interaction to the point that users prefer it to face-to-face conversation.

It’s tempting to say that some of these studies must be right and others wrong, but the body of evidence on both sides is a little too robust to be swept under the rug. Instead, the impact of social technology is more complicated. Sometimes, superficially similar behaviors have fundamentally different consequences. Sometimes online socialization is good for you, sometimes it’s bad, and the devil is entirely in the details.

This isn’t a novel proposition; after all, conflicting results started appearing within the first few studies into the internet’s social implications, back in the 1990s. Many people have suggested that to understand the consequences of online socialization, we need to dig deeper into situational factors and circumstances. But what we still have to do is move beyond recognition of the problem to provide an answer: When, how, and why are some online interactions great, while others are dangerous?

The interpersonal connection behaviors framework

As a scientist of close relationships, I can’t help but see online interactions differently from thinkers in other fields. People build relationships by demonstrating their understanding of each other’s needs and perspectives, a cyclical process that brings them closer together. If I tell you my secrets, and you respond supportively, I’m much more likely to confide in you again—and you, in turn, are much more likely to confide in me.

This means that every time two people talk to each other, an opportunity for relationship growth is unfolding. Many times, that opportunity isn’t taken; we aren’t about to have an in-depth conversation with the barista who asks for our order. But connection is always theoretically possible, and that’s true whether we’re interacting online or face-to-face.

Close relationships are the bread and butter of happiness—and even health. Being socially isolated is a stronger predictor of mortality than is smoking multiple cigarettes a day . If we want to understand the role technology plays in our well-being, we need to start with the role it plays in our relationships.

And it turns out that the kind of technology-mediated interactions that lead to positive outcomes are exactly those that are likely to build stronger relationships. Spending your time online by scheduling interactions with people you see day in and day out seems to pay dividends in increased social integration . Using the internet to compensate for being lonely just makes you lonelier; using the internet to actively seek out connection has the opposite effect .

On the other hand, technology-mediated interactions that don’t really address our close relationships don’t seem to do us any good—and might, in fact, do us harm. Passively scrolling through your Facebook feed without interacting with people has been linked to decreased well-being and increased depression post-Facebook use.

That kind of passive usage is a good example of “ social snacking .” Like eating junk food, social snacking can temporarily satisfy you, but it’s lacking in nutritional content. Looking at your friends’ posts without ever responding might make you feel more connected to them, but it doesn’t build intimacy.

Passive engagement has a second downside, as well: social comparison . When we compare our messy lived experiences to others’ curated self-presentations, we are likely to suffer from lowered self-esteem , happiness, and well-being. This effect is only exacerbated when we consume people’s digital lives without interacting with them, making it all too easy to miss the less photogenic moments of their lives.

Moving forward

The interpersonal connection behaviors framework doesn’t explain everything that might influence our well-being after spending time on social media. The internet poses plenty of other dangers—for two examples, the sense of wasting time or emotional contagion from negative news. However, a focus on meaningful social interaction can help explain decades of contradictory findings. And even if the framework itself is challenged by future work, its central concept is bound to be upheld: We have to study the details of how people are spending their time online if we want to understand its likely effects.

In the meantime, this framework has some practical implications for those worried about their own online time. If you make sure you’re using social media for genuinely social purposes, with conscious thought about how it can improve your life and your relationships, you’ll be far more likely to enjoy your digital existence.

Modern technology has multiple advantages. Some of them are:

1. Modern technology has helped cut costs and time

One of the major goals of modern technology is to decrease costs. Technological advancements have made it possible to cut hiring costs, as powerful machines can easily handle the work that required lots of workers and that too, way more efficiently. This allows a company to hire fewer workers, cutting costs.

As production costs decrease, products are becoming available in the market at a much cheaper price. And, as a result, more people are becoming capable of buying things that they always wanted.

Besides costs, it also aids in achieving tasks at a much faster rate, therefore, cutting time too. Time is precious. Advanced machines have made performing complex tasks easier. Along with that, automation has proved to be handy as well.

Because of automation, individuals don’t have to perform various difficult, time-consuming tasks manually anymore. All this has contributed to saving time and allowing us to focus on things that have more significance.

2. Modern technology has made it easier to access information

As technology progresses, accessing a world of information is becoming more and more effortless. The invention of the internet is a massive boon to mankind. With the help of the internet, we can get our hands on any kind of knowledge.

All information is available online. Search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc., act as gateways to this world of information. All we have to do is to type what we want to know about and within seconds, search results will appear.

From tutorials to study materials to peer-reviewed journals – the internet has it all. What took laborious searching in relevant books and library visits is now available on your handheld device. From online magazines to portals to blogs – gathering news about the world from the comforts of your home has become a cakewalk. Isn’t it crazy?

3. Modern technology has improved the banking experience

The rapid progress of technology has had a positive influence on the banking sector too. This influence becomes as clear as day if we take a look at how banks operated a few decades ago and how they operate today.

One of the key reasons behind the modernization of technology is to make complex and difficult work easier for the masses. And, needless to say, it has made banking an easy and hassle-free experience for people.

For example, net banking has empowered individuals to make transactions, apply for a new checkbook, enquire about their balance, and do various other things from home. They don’t have to visit their nearest branch anymore.

Also, think about ATM s. The introduction of the ATM facility has enabled us to withdraw or deposit cash from dedicated machines without visiting the bank. Besides, we can change our PIN, check our balance, or even transfer funds to a recipient right from an ATM.

All this has made banking increasingly effortless and has eliminated the need to stand in long, tiring queues for the most trivial of matters. Plus, credit and debit cards let you buy something or withdraw cash from anywhere. Hence, there is no need to carry cash in your pocket all the time.

4. Modern technology has enriched communication

Technology has facilitated communication to a great extent. In the modern world, communicating with others has become a cakewalk, thanks to the rapid development and unimaginable innovations of technology.

Even some fifty years ago, people used to write letters or went to STD booths to connect with their loved ones. But today, we have smartphones, laptops, social media, etc. These inventions have revolutionized ways of communication and made it possible to connect with our near ones no matter where they are. We can even video call them and see their faces even when we are far away. And that too, in seconds.

Besides personal communication, modern technology has made business/corporate communication easier as well. From attending client calls to remote workers taking part in video conferences – everything is becoming simpler as technology keeps reaching new heights.

5. Modern technology has revolutionized the health sector

The health industry has undoubtedly benefitted from rapid technological development and has been able to save more lives than it ever did before. Hospitals have started utilizing modern machines and devices to detect diseases at a faster rate.

Doctors have also become capable of monitoring their patients much more easily. Even in cases of surgeries, the addition of modern machines has made the surgical procedure way more precise. And where lives are at stake, fast and precise treatment is crucial.

Besides hospitals, technology has proved to be a blessing for maintaining personal health too. Think about fitness bands for a second. These tiny yet powerful devices help us keep track of our overall health without any hassle.

Disadvantages

Now that we have explained the advantages, let us list out the disadvantages of modern technology:

1. Modern technology contaminates the environment

With the progress of technology, the environment and biodiversity are facing a catastrophe. Harmful elements of various products are destroying both the well-being of living beings as well as the planet.

E-waste, plastic bottles, smartphone parts, chemical waste, deadly gases released from factories and vehicles, etc., harm our environment in unimaginable ways. And the worst part? Some of these damages are irreparable.

2. Modern technology causes distraction

Today, almost every person has a smartphone in their hands. People are becoming more focused on gadgets, mobile phones, television, etc., than their work or study.

Children are playing video games on their phones all day instead of studying, playing with their friends, or doing something productive.

Adults are immersed in social media and getting isolated from their friends, family, and society. They don’t want to go out, meet anyone, or socialize. And as a result, people are becoming more and more distracted with each passing day.

Although modern technology has benefitted society a lot, it has also proved to be dangerous when in the hands of people with crooked intentions. Cybercrimes are one such example. Using technology, hackers are causing harm to people through computers and networks.

As technology advances, crimes like email fraud, crypto-jacking, data theft, ransomware attacks, cyber espionage, and more are becoming rampant. People are not safe anymore, even within their four walls.

4. Modern technology brings about unemployment

An increase in unemployment is a big concern in today’s world. And the modernization of technology has only worsened that issue. More people are losing their jobs because of the massive automation in various sectors.

A single machine is achieving what required many workers in the past. So, as a means to cut costs and time, employers are not willing to hire human workers. That means the scope of getting jobs is shrinking day by day, and more people are becoming unemployed.

5. Technology negatively impacts people’s creativity

When human beings try to do something unique from scratch, it stimulates their creativity. Using their creative powers, people can create something remarkable, extraordinary, and out of the box. However, technological advancements have made everything so easy that people are reluctant to employ their deep thinking and creative skills anymore. Take AI, for instance.

Before the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI), creating something fresh and exceptional took a lot of creativity from the creator. But with the help of AI, it is possible to produce eye-catching artwork from only a text prompt. While this has reduced time and energy consumption, it has also taken a toll on people’s inventiveness. With AI at their disposal, even individuals with absolutely zero talent can create something mind-blowing.

Instead of relying on their own capacities and skills, human beings are becoming increasingly dependent on modern technological inventions and gadgets. This dangerous tendency is gradually messing up the ingenuity of individuals and hindering their creative development even though they are unaware of it.
