PhD in History

The PhD in History offers you the opportunity to study history at an advanced level through independent research.

The PhD is our principal research degree. The size of Edinburgh’s history department, and the breadth of expertise available from our staff, means that we can offer supervision for research projects in a wide array of fields. We have strong research concentrations in Scottish history, American history, global and transnational history, Irish history, intellectual history, and medieval history, and colleagues who can supervise topics spanning two millennia and five continents. Members of the history department have strong links with colleagues elsewhere in the University with research expertise in related disciplines, from Classics, Archaeology and History of Art to Politics and Economics.

The breadth of research expertise in the School and in the wider University makes it possible for us to supervise a very wide range of topics. Each student is allocated at least two supervisors, allowing us to combine thematic, chronological and, if appropriate, disciplinary expertise in the supervisory team. We also have close links with external organisations, such as the National Museums of Scotland, and may be able to include external partners in supervisory teams.

Details of PhD projects currently being undertaken in the School can be found on our list of research student web profiles .

Programme structure

The PhD is a substantial piece of independent research which makes a contribution to the state of existing knowledge in the field. The PhD programme is designed to take three years full-time or six years part time. The PhD is examined by submission of a thesis of up to 100,000 words and by oral examination.

PhD students work closely with their supervisors, who are recognised experts in the field of study. All PhD students pursue an individually tailored programme of research training agreed with their supervisors. The PhD programmes in History provide core training in the research skills necessary to flourish at doctoral level and beyond, through a core course in semester one, Professional Skills for Historians , and a day-long annual conference for PhD students in semester two.  All PhD students in the School also benefit from School and University-wide training in research and professional skills.

PhD students are encouraged to share their research with other postgraduate students through workshops and seminars, and to take an active part in the research life of the history subject area, the School and the University through our research groups and centres and through student-led workshops and seminars. Current research groups include Digital Humanities ; Intellectual History ; Material Culture; Global and Transnational History; History of Science, Medicine and Technology; Economic and Social History; Political History ; Irish History ; and Late Antique and Byzantine Studies . We also have three research centres: The Centre for the Study of Modern and Contemporary History ;  Medieval and Renaissance Studies ; and the Edinburgh Centre for Global History .

You must  contact a potential supervisor  to discuss your research project before making a formal application.

If you have any questions about the programme, please contact the Programme Director.

Keio Vice-President Tsuchiya Participates in RENKEI Health Workshop

April 5, 2024

From March 18 to 20, the University of Southampton, which is located in the U.K., hosted a health workshop by the Japan-UK Research and Education Network for Knowledge Economy Initiative (RENKEI). Keio Vice-President Motohiro Tsuchiya and Rita Chuang, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Media and Governance, attended the workshop.

Over the course of the three-day workshop, researchers in various fields from RENKEI member universities in the U.K. and Japan were divided into groups where they presented their research which mainly focused on the issue of aging populations. Researchers from both countries were highly engaged in discussions about how they could collaborate to tackle challenges they face in trying to prolong healthy life expectancy and build healthy societies.

Vice-President Tsuchiya also attended the RENKEI Steering Committee Meeting held on March 20.

A similar workshop is scheduled to be hosted by Keio University at the Tsuruoka Town Campus of Keio (TTCK) in the 2024 academic year.

RENKEI is a Japan-UK university partnership program. In addition to Keio University, other member universities from Japan include Kyushu University, Tohoku University, Ritsumeikan University, and Osaka University. Member universities from the U.K. include the University of Edinburgh, the University of Southampton, Durham University, Newcastle University, the University of Leeds, and the University of Liverpool.

Apr 15, 2024: Guy Lloyd Jones (Edinburgh) - Kharasch Lecture

Cats and Dogma - Kharasch Lectures 2024 The presentation, the first of three on the general theme of in situ mechanistic analysis, will illustrate the application of isotopes and kinetics in the elucidation of structure, reactivity, selectivity, and antagonism in reactions where speculation has become accepted mechanism through citation-reinforcement. The processes that will be presented proceed at rates that are generally amenable to direct analysis by NMR methods under the conditions of application of the reaction in synthesis, i.e. at normal temperatures and concentrations. They all also offer the possibility to independently prepare observed reaction intermediates and then analyze their structure and reactivity at leisure in solution, in the absence of one or more of the components required for the normal reaction. The tools applied include NMR, X-ray crystallography, neutron scattering, and mass-spectrometry. These ‘ex situ’ measurements not only offer unique insight into the processes of interest, but also present a risk of misinterpretation. The reactions discussed will include stereochemical induction and ablation in palladium-allyl chemistry, azole-mediated acyl transfer, and nickel / zinc-mediated aryl halide homocoupling. The presentation will draw on past, present, and unpublished work to highlight selected points.

Two University of Pittsburgh faculty members in the Kenneth P. Dietrich School of Arts and Sciences received American Counsel of Learned Societies (ACLS) Fellowships to conduct a full-time research project over the 2024-25 academic year.

Because of the disproportionate effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had on emerging, independent and untenured scholars, all of this year’s 60 fellows have earned their PhD in the past eight years and are scholars without faculty appointments or those off the tenure track.

Dela Kuma, assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology, will use the fellowship year to complete her project, “Africanized Tastes and Consumer Power,” an ethnoarchaeological history of how local tastes and consumer practices have impacted regional and global trade networks in West Africa over the last 200 years. A specialist in the archaeology of global encounters in Atlantic-era West Africa, she has also worked on archaeological projects in Nigeria, Portugal, Italy, Israel and Russia.

Kaliane Ung is a visiting assistant professor of French. Her project, “Wounded Writings: Disability in France,” focuses on first-person accounts of disability across literary genres. She studied at the University of Edinburgh and University of Paris before earning her PhD in French literature at New York University.
