Just this year, I have come up on the 10-year milestone of living with chronic pain. What one might immediately assume is all the misery that I endure daily living with pain. I am here to say that is the furthest thing from the truth. I am 24 years old, and by the way I live my life, nobody would take a wild guess in a million years that pain is a part of my life or has ever been a part of my life ( AKA my life is normal! ). However, it wasn’t always like that.

Here are six positive ways pain has changed my life, and lessons I have learned over the past decade:

1. Pain has taught me GRATITUDE:

Growing up, I always heard from family and friends to be grateful, and say things out loud that you were appreciative of. It wasn’t until pain came into my life, and I recovered from pain, that I knew how to p ractice gratitude daily.

I have learned to be grateful for the little things, like the ability to take a walk spontaneously and not feel anything but refreshed and rejuvenated, going to new and different workout classes, and doing cardio and weight training almost daily. When you are nearly couch-ridden for years and every activity had a consequence, spontaneously being active is a true gift.

I also have immense amounts of gratitude for the people in my life who have supported me every step of the way, physicians, psychologists, PT, OT, family, and friends. When the days get tough, I can simply remind myself of just a few things I am grateful for.

2. Pain has taught me to use my voice for positive change

For the first three years of living with pain, I firmly believed this was my life, that this was my fate. A few years after I went to a pain rehabilitation program, my curiosity was piqued on how I can use my story for positive change. Since my pain rehabilitation experience, I have spoken many times at both the program I went to and other programs around the country, developed a podcast with The Comfort Ability Peer Advisory Board , lead numerous monthly groups for kids with pain, and recently became a representative for a national psychology organization. Sharing my story with kids and parents alike that there is a light at the end of a tunnel, and where you may be in your pain journey is not where you will always have created a deeper meaning and purpose in my life.

3. Pain has brought me a new career

My entire life I wanted to be a doctor, specifically when I was in high school, I was certain I would be a pediatric neurologist. It took a pain journey to introduce me to some of the most influential people in my life that have seemingly the most rewarding careers on the planet. I am proud to say that I am a current PhD student in Clinical Psychology studying to eventually become a pediatric pain psychologist.

4. Pain has taught me resourcefulness and resilience

I vividly remember at the beginning of my pain journey, being told over and over that this was only the beginning and that there was no chance of ever getting better. I then took it upon myself to contact other young adults who went to pain rehabilitation, speak to them live, come up with alternative options to get back to living, and learn to NEVER give up on the hope of resuming a normal life . The tenacity it took to jump feet-first into pain rehabilitation was easily the scariest risk I have ever taken. It was a leap of faith and my last resort at the time. I knew deep down that this would work and every time I got knocked down during my time in pain rehabilitation, I stood up and stood up stronger ( figuratively and literally! ). I take this same resilience through my everyday life now as a doctoral student.

5. Pain has taught me the value of self-care

One of the core principles that is virtually universal no matter where you are is the importance of taking care of yourself. I have learned that self-care takes many shapes and sizes . I have tried on almost every type of self-care activity and have built up a toolkit of self-care strategies that I can use no matter the setting or time. More than ever, I have learned to practice what I preach and incorporate several self-care exercises into my everyday routine. Taking a few extra minutes for myself before my workday to meditate and ensuring I get both cardio and strength training has paid dividends in maintaining my mental and physical health.

6. Pain has Taught me to Ask for Help

One of the hardest truths that has come out of living with pain has been knowing when to say “no” and ask for help. When some days my best is not where it was the day before, or I need a little extra time on an assignment, pain has taught me to give myself grace , or simply need to take some time for myself. Learning to hit the pause button or take a brief break has been invaluable.

Throughout these past 10 years of living with pain, I have learned some tough, life lessons. But rather than thinking of my pain journey as something that has held me back from chasing my dreams, I have used my experience to shape my worldview positively and create a new path forward.

About the Author

Brooke Greenberg is a second year Clinical Psychology PhD student at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Brooke aspires to be a pediatric psychologist with a focus in chronic pain and work in a multidisciplinary pain rehabilitation program. She has had full body chronic pain for nearly a decade, with the most impactful experience attending a multidisciplinary pain rehabilitation program which included physical therapy, occupational therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy, which transformed her life.

Since I am a high school student, somebody might say I have my entire life ahead of me, with all of its beautiful experiences. But despite being so young, I already have a personal breathtaking experience, which I am sure I will carry with me until my last days: my first hike to the mountains.

The Most Memorable Experience in My Life

Though traveling is not a big deal for me today, before my trip to the mountains, I used to be a homebody. I had friends to hang out with, several hobbies, and I felt completely comfortable spending weeks or even months in my hometown—or sometimes even on my block—without going anywhere. All my demands of novelty were satisfied by the Discovery and National Geographic channels, and I seriously thought there was no difference between seeing something on the TV or with one’s own eyes.

The situation changed when one day David, my best pal who always has a couple of colorful bugs in his head (or, in other words, was always carrying out several crazy plans at once) tumbled into my room and proclaimed his disgust for civilization. I will not describe how he managed to persuade me to join him on his journey to the Rocky Mountains; all I will say is we departed in five days. This was my first time in the mountains, so I was turning my head in all directions. Unfortunately, the weather was foggy most the time, and the higher we got into the mountains, the worse the visibility was.

Even despite this fact, I still enjoyed the hike—I felt like I was Bear Grylls , whose show I used to watch with excitement: in the wild, with food and water in my backpack, carrying a flashlight and a knife. On the first day, we were making our way along the foothills; but the next day, we started to climb on one of the peaks. Though it was not that steep and high, I was still excited. I regularly hastened, and because of that, I ran out of energy long before we got to the top; David, on the other hand was more well-paced.

When we finally got to the top, nothing had changed. The same fog was covering the surroundings, and even though I was teeming with positive emotions, I felt disappointed, because I counted on seeing the view from above and perhaps being able to take some photos. We spent a couple of hours on the top, and decided to turn back, when the wind suddenly dispersed the clouds, and the plateau we were standing on became illuminated with the sun. I saw a fantastic panorama in front of me, and for some moments, I couldn’t believe my eyes .

Seeing all those mountain ridges, cliffs, and edges on my own, not on TV, was like a revelation for me. The strong wind blew right into my face, and I stood there and watched shreds of fog gliding over the ground far beneath me. At that moment, I realized that I won’t be able to live a life without visiting the mountains at least a few times a year. The next day we returned—my legs started to hurt so bad that I could hardly walk. But every time as my face wrinkled because of an ache, I remembered the feeling of being high above, with my head touching the skies and the clouds swimming below.

The 6 Most Common Regrets People Experience

Have you ever made a decision that you later regretted? You’re not alone. Most people are familiar with that feeling of emptiness mixed with a hint of anger . Your mind speeds through alternative timelines in which you did something different and things turned out better.

Although many regrets are small and quickly forgotten—such as the stupid comment you made on social media —there are some regrets that endure. They become salient “sliding door” moments for which you can easily envision a better storyline for your life.

Reflecting on the most enduring regrets is important because they usually link back to big life decisions. Each of us is are in control of these decisions—so we can potentially avoid the worst regrets by having a plan. But what are the decisions we’re most likely to regret, and why?

What Do We Regret?

One way that we can learn about life’s biggest regrets is to directly ask people.

A nationally representative study, which asked 270 Americans to describe a significant life regret, found the most commonly reported regrets involved romance (19.3%), family (16.9%), education (14.0%), career (13.8%), finance (9.9%), and parenting (9.0%) (Morrison & Roese, 2011).

Another way that we can learn about life’s biggest regrets is to listen to those who care for the dying. These carers, who spend much of their time in discussion with those in their last act, have a unique perspective.

Perhaps the most well-known example is Bronnie Ware, an Australian palliative carer who wrote a book called The Top Five Regrets of the Dying . In it, she describes the five most common wishes she heard from her soon-to-depart clients.

  • I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. Stringently adhering to cultural norms at the expense of your own passions will result in disappointment and bitterness.
  • I wish I hadn’t worked so hard . Time is non-refundable so if you spend it working, then you can’t spend it doing more meaningful things.
  • I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings . It is only by being open and honest about your thoughts and feelings can you form genuine bonds with other people.
  • I wish I’d stayed in touch with my friends . It is dispiriting to be disconnected from those who truly understand you and accept you as you are.
  • I wish I had let myself be happier . The expectations and opinions of others should not prevent you from being happy with who you are. Moreover, happiness can be found in the journey, not just the destination, which you often never reach.

What Leads to Regret?

A number of features increase the likelihood that a decision will lead to regret.

Feelings of regret in the long-term are more likely for decisions involving inaction; that is, choosing not to do something (Gilovich & Medvec, 1994)—for example, that overseas job you never took or that person you never had the courage to ask out. This kind of regret is enhanced by our imagination , which compares the real world with visions of the best alternative world. You can never know how things would have turned out but your mind can easily paint a rosy picture.

Decisions resulting in poor outcomes produce greater regret when it is harder to justify those decisions in retrospect (Connolly & Zeelenberg, 2002). Some decisions are made quickly, without consulting others or thinking through the options and their possible consequences. When these decisions turn out poorly, you are more likely to lament how easily you could have done something differently.

Regrets often result from decisions that move you further from the ideal version of yourself (Davidai & Gilovich, 2018). The person you want to be is grounded by your values, which reflect the things that are important to you. Some value power, others conformity , others security. Whatever it is, decisions that compromise your values expose you to the risk of regret.

There are a few important take-homes from this discussion. First, the most enduring regrets relate to social relationships. Humans have a biological need to belong and decisions that threaten this sense of belonging are particularly fraught with risk. Nurture your relationships.

Second, the most intense regrets are for decisions that are hard to justify in retrospect. To avoid regrets, it is important to make decisions that are consistent with your personal life rules and values. Even if things turn out poorly, you will know why the decision made sense for you at the time.

Third, the biggest regrets tend to relate to the things you didn’t do, perhaps because you were scared or were too busy working. It’s easier to course correct after taking action than time travel and pursue opportunities you left behind. Give things a go.

Personal Essay Example:  The Most Influential and Impactful People in My Life

Typically, high school students have a best friend that is relatively the same age as them. Well, my best friend is a middle-aged man. My best friend is my dad. When I think of someone who has impacted my life, my mind immediately goes to him. I think about all the things I have told him that can only come from a certain amount of trust. When you share a decent amount of trust with someone, a bond seems to form, one unlike any other. A bond that makes a person your best friend. My dad is and always will be my best friend. 

For as long as I can remember, basketball has been one of my dad’s favorite things. He would always talk about his teams, who they were going to play, and how well the competition would be. My dad has coached girls basketball for eleven years, ranging from coaching seventh grade to ninth grade. I have always admired how connected my dad was with his teams. When I would go to his games, I could see how much trust he had in his players and how much trust they had in him. While playing a school sport, it is guaranteed that there will be some amount of drama. Players would try to tear the team apart by fomenting drama or parents will be insatiable with their child’s playing time. I heard about all of this at home. I would hear about how frustrated my dad was getting because he heard a parent complaining to another parent about his coaching skills. It has always been hard seeing him get frustrated with these sorts of things because he doesn’t normally let the words of parents get under his skin. He rarely brings up what they say and he barely ever shows that he is paying attention to what they are saying. 

My dad has always been the kind of guy to push me to be my absolute best. He’s not the kind of guy to let me get away with putting half of my effort into anything. At work, my dad is a manager. Well, the manager of his department. He comes home all the time talking about how his coworkers will make him so mad because they seem like they don’t even want to be there. My dad has always told me, “If you’re going to do anything, always leave it all out there.” My dad and I both get very frustrated with ourselves when something is not going the way we want it to. My dad has managed to find something he calls the Reset Button. When he presses the Reset Button, he moves on from whatever is bothering and upsetting him. This magical button has never helped me. Brief exchanges of looks between me and my dad have always seemed to be my Reset Button. When I am frustrated and I make eye contact with my dad, it is almost like an entire conversation happens in thirty seconds. I don’t know if my dad means for that to happen, but it does. The words he says by saying nothing always seemed conducive to me. Like I know that no matter what happens, he is always going to be proud of me. 

I have always been a gullible person. You say something to me and I will believe it. I have a hard time with confrontation; therefore, I always believe the best in people and put all my trust in them. My dad; however, people have to earn his trust. When we have conversations about my gullibility, the conversation almost always ends with me in tears. My dad always tells me that if I continue to believe the best in people, they will always run me over. I have never really comprehended what he meant. I would hear what he said, and I’ve heard it multiple times, but I continue to put all my trust and believe the best in everyone. My dad has never told me why he continuously asks me to stop being so gullible. Maybe it was because he got hurt in the past believing people too much and he doesn’t want me to go through that same pain; however, I have never been able to ask him why. 

Collecting sports cards has become an obsession of my dads. Taking up an entire room in our house to be exact. To spend time with my dad, I went to a card show with him. As we rode in the car, I realized I had no idea what to expect going into the building; however, the excitement on my dad’s face made the uneasiness disappear. As we walked up to the exposition center and through the halls, I could see the excitement flowing from him. If you were to compare my dad and a kid in a candy shop at that exact moment, I truly believe you wouldn’t be able to tell a difference. When we finally got to the part of the building that was holding the card show, the countless tables full of objects ranging from cards to signed shoes astounded me. My father; however, was tremendously comfortable with the crowded environment. He made his way through the tables speaking the card addict lingo and by the time we were walking out the door, he was leaving with exactly what he had gone in looking for.

Car rides are always my favorite when I am with my dad. The things we talk about are all over the place. When you get in the car, you never really know what is going to happen. We could talk about sports, college, drama, or even the things that go on at home. My dad has always been the parent I feel more comfortable going up and talking to. When in the car with my dad, I feel safe. I feel like I can say anything and know that he is going to listen. Most of the time, when I am stressed about school, I always find myself talking to him about it in the car. At times, it feels like I am just talking to myself, but when that happens, I know my dad is listening to every word I say. I would say my dad is a very observant person. He always wants you to say everything and have your full stance before he chimes in with another component. 

While my dad can be straightforward, he is also one of the most humorous people I know. My dad will always try to make us laugh and it always brings a smile to the whole family. When my dad busts out his dance moves from back in the day, the amount of laughter that fills the room is astronomical. Or when he unleashes his vocals, that’s a household favorite. If one of us kids has a bad day at school, my dad will tell us a funny story from work. I wouldn’t say my dad is a people pleaser, but I think that when he truly wants to make someone’s day, he will find a way to make them smile. The amount of joy that my dad has in him seems to surprise some people. Some people will say that my dad is scary. When really, once you get to know him, he is a pretty exceptional guy. 

My dad has always told me and my siblings that no matter what we decide to do in life, he will support us no matter what. The belief in knowing that my dad has my back has always been so reassuring to me. When I decided to no longer take part in a sport that I had been participating in for what seems like forever, I truly thought my dad was going to be frustrated with me. I didn’t want him to believe I was just giving up. When he wasn’t upset, it took me by surprise. It had made me feel like the love my dad had for me had overridden his love for the sport and that he just wanted me to be happy. My whole life, having my dad’s approval on everything has been so important to me. One of my biggest goals ever since I was little has been to make my dad proud. My dad has been understanding of every decision I have made. When I decided on my career path, I could see how proud I was making him. The approval of my parents when choosing where I want to go to college and what I want to do after has always been important to me. I know no matter what I choose to do, my dad will be there and be my biggest supporter and scream my name the loudest at either my accomplishments or at my failure. I know he will be proud I tried and he will always be there to pick me up if I fall. 

Dad, you have been one of the most influential and impactful people in my life. You have made me see things from a different perspective. You have helped me get through things that I wouldn’t have been able to get through on my own. You have had conversations with me about things that are incredibly important to consider regarding my future. You are someone I feel like I can always go to, no matter the reason. You have made me laugh harder and more uncontrollably than anyone else. You have made me feel safe, and you have made me feel loved. Dad, I am so grateful for everything you have done for me. You are my forever best friend.
