All About Me Bag Activity Ideas and Instructions
What is an "All About Me Bag?"
An "All About Me Bag" is basically a structured, back to school show and tell.
Give students an empty lunch sack with instructions (find free printable instructions below). The instructions tell students that their very first homework assignment is to decorate the bag with words and pictures that describe them or are important to them. Then, they choose 3 school appropriate objects that will fit in the bag to share with the class.
When students bring their bags back the next day, they will share their bag with the class.
All About Me Bag - Free Printable Instructions
Use these free All About Me Bag Labels to give as instructions to your 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students.
These instruction tell students to bring 3 objects that:
- Fit in the bag (so that this activity doesn't take up too much space in your classroom)
- Are school appropriate
- Are not very valuable (to prevent problems with parents if things get lost or stolen)
- Reflect something that is important to the student or their life
Use these free All About Me Bag Labels in your own upper elementary classroom.
All About Me Bag Example
Before sending your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade students home with their "All About Me Bags," model sharing your own bag with them so they know what is expected. Bonus: It's a chance for them to get to know you a little better as well.
As my "All About Me Bag" example, I would usually include:
- a picture of my husband and me hiking
- a dog treat
These 3 items gave me a chance to talk about my husband, my dogs, and some of my favorite hobbies - hiking and reading. These 3 items summed up some of the most important parts of my life that I wanted to share with students.
I have found that by providing these 3 examples was enough to get my students' creative juices flowing, but if they need more ideas you could suggest things like:
- a small piece of equipment from a sport they like to play (like a glove or a sock)
- a favorite video game box/container
- pictures of family
- a piece from a favorite board game
- the recipe for a favorite food
- a favorite accessory (necklace, bracelet, etc.)
- a memento from a trip or vacation
Need some no prep figurative language practice? These worksheets include engaging poems with figurative language along with questions, activities, a student reference chart, and more. And as an added bonus, the worksheets walk students through the process of creating their own short poems with figurative language.
This resource is great for Poetry Month!
The Benefits of Using This as an Ice Breaker
Building a positive classroom community is one of the most important things you will do at the beginning of the school year. There are a lot of ways to do this:
- back to school activities and ice breakers
- team building discussion questions
- other All About Me ideas
- team building activities
However, the All About Me Bag activity has an advantage that most other back to school activities don't. It provides students with a low stress opportunity to get in front of the entire class and speak.
It is important for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students to feel comfortable speaking in front of the class. Yet this is terrifying for a lot of students. An activity like this can help students feel more comfortable, because there are no wrong answers - they will be talking about themselves.
You might also like these other back to school activities and ideas.

Are Gift Cards a Good Gift?
Creative gift card presentation ideas.
Gift cards make an excellent gift idea for a number of reasons. Their flexibility is perhaps the biggest draw. They cater to everything from favorite retailers to experience gifts like food tours and cooking classes. They also allow the recipient to be more active in picking out exactly what they would like to spend their funds on, and there's nothing better than getting precisely what you want!
From highly personalized selections to more general gifts such as those for office gift exchanges, gift cards offer a great and easy way to appeal to everyone. They’re also perfect gifts for someone who has everything .
1. With a Small Coordinating Object
A great gift card presentation idea is to pair the card with a small, inexpensive, but related gift item. This can be a foodie gift card attached to a new piece of kitchenware for the budding gourmet, or a coffee shop gift card attractively presented inside a mug or travel cup. While the card allows the recipient to spend the funds on their items and experiences of choice, the related item will forever be a tangible reminder of the gift.
2. Make a Candy Jar
A fun way to give a gift card is to create a candy jar of the recipient's favorite treats. Create an attractive container using a Mason jar filled with sweet treats or snacks. Attach the gift card to the outside or top of the jar, or place it inside against the glass or hidden under treats to make them forage for their gift.
This gift card presentation idea is perfect for people with a sweet tooth or for children. It also works great for any kind of snack and with any size container. Candy jars also make great last-minute gift ideas .
3. Create a Handmade Envelope
Handmade envelopes and paper pouches are another wonderful gift card presentation idea. Create an attractive envelope or slip using new or recycled paper. Retailers like JOANN and Michaels carry a great assortment of fine handmade papers. There are a number of tutorials on how to fold your paper and fasten the corners, including ideas on how to decorate it with collage or embellishments to make it extra special.
4. Give It With a Bottle
Another great gift card presentation idea is to pair it with the recipient’s favorite beverage. Affix the gift card to anything from a wine bottle, a favorite hard liquor or even a bag of their favorite coffee. Sodas, seltzers and other beverages are also perfect options. This is great for grab bags, white elephant gift exchanges at gatherings around the holidays and last-minute Christmas gifts .
5. Create a Puzzle Box
A fun way to give a gift card is to create a handmade puzzle box they must solve to obtain the card. These can be as simple or advanced as you like. Boxes can be constructed out of existing boxes, cardboard or cardstock paper. A puzzle box, whatever the difficulty level, is an engaging way to present a gift card for children or curious, puzzle-loving adults.
6. Pop-Up Card or Booklet
If you're looking for an elaborate and creative way to give a gift card, consider crafting a fun pop-up envelope or booklet to display your gift card front and center. Tutorials online show how to create unique gift card presentations like this, including engaging designs that are as surprising and fun to give as they are to receive. They also evoke an element of surprise and whimsy that will be long remembered by the receiver.
7. Make a Fabric or Knitted Sleeve
An excellent gift card presentation idea, particularly in the winter months, is creating fabric or knitted pockets or sleeves for gift cards. This adds a cozy personal touch that allows you to tailor your gift sleeve’s print and color to the theme of the intended celebration — red and green for Christmas, for example.
Fabric pouches are simple to sew by hand or machine. While knitting or crocheting a pocket or sleeve for your card may require more advanced skills, they’re an excellent short afternoon project for even beginner knitters. If you aren't up to making the pouch yourself, you can always purchase or recycle one and add elements like buttons and trim, or hand stamp a design or message onto the pouch.
8. Make a Memory Book
A thoughtful gift card presentation idea is creating an accordion or handbound book album featuring mementos and photos personal to you and the gift recipient. Fold a long sheet of paper or cardstock into fourths or eighths, creating a system of pockets; one to include your gift card, others to include pieces of ephemera and printed images. These personal touches make the small book a great memory long after the card is gone.
This is a perfect idea for a gift card presentation for both family and friends you’ve known for a long time, and a great way to share experience gift cards .
9. Create a Gift Card Wallet
Another perfect presentation idea for gift cards is to create a wallet from paper or fabric to enclose the gift card. Make it a simple bifold design or add elements like buttons, latches or adhesive to close it. This idea also works perfectly when presenting several gift cards for group gifts. An alternative is to recycle an older wallet and decorate it with a design or image special to you and the recipient.
10. Fold It in Origami
A completely one-of-a-kind gift card presentation idea is to enclose your card in an origami sculpture. Animals, butterflies or other unique folded objects make memorable receptacles for gift cards. While folding the paper and engineering the shape may take a little practice, it’s more than worthwhile. This gift card presentation idea is especially great for children.
11. Attach an Ornament
For the holidays, ornaments make great accompaniments to gift cards. If you’re feeling especially crafty, make a simple fabric or paper ornament to hang on a tree. You could also purchase a special or handmade ornament, which will forever serve as a reminder and point of connection long after the gift card has been spent.
12. Deck of Gift Cards
For holidays or other gatherings, a fun gift card presentation idea is to create a deck of cards with several gift cards secreted inside. Each participant draws a card from the deck as it makes its way around the room. Some are just regular cards, but the lucky will draw the actual gift cards as prizes. This works perfectly for office parties or large family gatherings and is a fun ice breaker activity for people you would like to get to know.
13. Put It in a Snow Globe
Another fun holiday gift card presentation idea is to create a simple snow globe. Place the gift card inside a mason jar and then use small seasonal items and fake snow or glitter to decorate the interior and outside of the jar. Think animal figures, miniature ornaments and small trees. The jar can remain a favorite décor item long after the occasion.
Creating snow globes can also be a fun group or kids’ activity. Children love to create them, so this is an excellent option for having them make holiday gifts for teachers .
14. Include a Toy
A cute gift card presentation idea for kids is to attach the gift card to a small toy or inexpensive stuffed animal. This is particularly cute if you arrange the card so that it looks like the animal or doll is “presenting” the gift card. Stock up on small stuffed toys and dolls at dollar stores and thrift shops to keep them on hand for gift card giving occasions.
15. Gift Card Bouquet
An excellent gift card presentation idea, particularly for group gifts, is a gift card bouquet. These can be created using pipe cleaners and tissue paper to fashion flowers with gift cards at their centers. This unique gift card presentation idea works perfectly for new mom and baby shower gifts, with cards assembled from a number of different places and retailers. It’s also an excellent gift card presentation idea for new homeowners or housewarming parties.
16. Attach It to Art or Classroom Supplies
A fun gift card presentation idea for end-of-year teacher gifts is to create a bouquet of markers or pencils. The card is a personal gift, but you are also providing some badly needed classroom supplies for the next year. Switch out the classroom supplies for paint brushes or professional grade markers or drawing pens, and this becomes a great gift idea for budding artists.
17. Bath and Body Items
A great idea when presenting a personal care gift card is to pair it with a favorite small cosmetic or bath and body item like perfume, bath gel or lotion. This works perfectly for giving a spa day card or a card for the recipient's favorite bath and body or cosmetics store. Retailers often offer small sample sizes of their most popular products that make a perfect accompaniment to a gift card.
18. Create a Custom Gift Pouch or Bag
A cute and recycle-friendly gift card presentation idea is to create a small bag or pouch from recycled paper. Great ideas include leftover gift wrap or the comics section of the newspaper. Magazine pages also create visually interesting packaging. You can always add other small items to the bag with the card, like stickers, toys or sample-sized offerings related to the gift card.
19. Make a Gift Card Wreath
Another fun gift card presentation idea for group settings is a gift card wreath. Place decorative envelopes on a wreath, attach them with clips and then draw names, with each participant choosing one of the cards. Vary the amounts of the cards and make a game of it, allowing players to swap, barter and scheme for their desired cards.

I am headed over to the stair one. A friend of mine did an entire floor with them, and it looks wonderful. I wonder how they would hold up on stairs, though. I’m heading over to look.

Amazing! I am tempted to do the stairway thing, but it’s our back entry that gets a lot of use and I wonder how it would wear? Guess I better hit the link and see what she did! Thanks for the ideas, these are great:>)

I know the floors done in this method hold up very well. I think I saw one where she did it in her bathroom and she said that it’s held up very well there (I guess since you use poly over it would be sealed well)

Lesson Plan# AELP-RDG0011 Submitted by: Cecilia Hoff School or Affiliation: Manassas Park High School, Manassas Park, VA Date: April 1998
Subject(s):
- Language Arts/Reading
Goals and Objectives:
After selecting and reading a book independently, students will create a paper bag book report using an ordinary paper bag. Students should choose five-seven items to place in the bag to represent significant events or characters from the book. For example, Goldilocks and the Three Bears might call for a soupspoon, a thermometer, a piece of dollhouse furniture, an ad for running shoes, etc. Students, after filling and decorating their bags, present them to the class. Each student should explain how the items he or she has chosen relate to the book. This makes for a fun oral presentation which exceeds the traditional book report for both the presenter and the audience.
Lesson Concepts and Materials:
Independent book selection, independent reading, analysis of plot, character and/ or theme, oral presentation.
Paperbags (large to lunch-size).
Procedures:
- Each student chooses and reads a book.
- Students analyze their books’ characters, plots, themes, etc.
- Teacher explains the bag book reports. (A teacher-made sample works great!)
- Students devise written plans for their bag book reports, detailing five to seven items for the inside as well as layouts for each part of the outside. (Teacher may want to require title, author, and publisher on the front; an internal conflict on the left side; an external conflict on the right side; or a favorite scene on the back, for example.)
- Provide time in class for students to complete their book report projects so they can see others working and have guided practice at fulfilling the promise of their written plans.
- Students present their projects, in detail, to the class – first explaining the outside of their bags and then explaining each of the itmes inside. (Questions from the class come naturally.)
- Students can assess each other using a teacher-devised scoring rubric for both the bag and the presentation.
Assessment: Peer assessment of oral presentation; guided self-assessment of bag (inside and out) using a teacher-devised checklist/scoring rubric

20+ Pretty Cookie Packaging Ideas
Part of the fun of handmade gifts are the unique touches that make them special. Packaging is a very important part of the presentation. I’ve put together twenty fun cookie packaging ideas from a variety of resources. I love each and every one of them and there is something for every style and budget. I hope you’ll try a few with your own cookie creations.
I found this beautiful cookie assortment assortment on at The Black Apple . They are packaged in pre-made boxes from the craft store. You can find similar boxes HERE .
$1 Jars from Dollar Tree . I’ve found three different varieties, the flip top version being my favorite for cookie gifts. Dollar Tree seems to only carry these around the holiday season, so keep your eyes open after Thanksgiving and be sure to pick a few up. They are very handy to have around.
I love this cookie favor bunting I found on 100 Layer Cake Blog . I made up the name, but in any case, what a wonderful idea! You can find kraft paper treat bags like the ones above, HERE .
I thought these sewn paper candy pouches from Peppermint Plum would work just as well to package cookies. Just wrap a single cookie in waxed paper before sewing it inside. It would be especially fun to sew around the shape of the cookie inside. I can imagine so many versions of this idea…stamped, hand decorated by my kids…the possibilities are endless!
I also fell in love with these simple cookie envelopes from Martha Stewart . You can find templates for the second version HERE . Of course, it’s Martha, are you surprised? Turns out she has more cookie packaging ideas than I do cookie cutters!
If you want to stay on a budget, try these paper plate baskets from Sarah Hearts . Use pretty washi tape to make them extra special!
If you’re looking for tips on pretty Christmas cookie packaging, head on over to Glorious Treats for tips on perfectly presented cookies like these!
I saw this dressed up jar on Anna and Blue Paperie and I knew it would be perfect filled with Christmas cookies. All you need are cupcake liners, ribbon, and her beautiful printables to create a beautiful jar just like this one.
This idea from The Essential Packaging Store Blog is one of my personal favorites. Use a scrapbooking edger to dress up simple glassine bags .
Here’s another idea from Country Living that uses cupcake liners and ribbon to dress up a simple cookie treat. Attach a card with your favorite recipe {or mine} to make it an EXTRA special treat!
Tea and cookies, one of life’s simplest pleasures was the thought behind this packaging idea from Shopgirl. I am already looking forward to a year of collecting cast off tea cups so I can use this idea myself next year.
I also love the idea of re-using disposable household items. This birch branch is actually a Pringle’s can that Gracie, from Sense and Simplicity , covered with scrapbook paper. For those of you worried about chip residue, wipe the container clean with a damp rag and soapy water, then air dry. Better yet, fill them with compost cookies as my friend Laura suggested and it’s perfectly appropriate for them to end up in a potato chip can.
This idea from Country Living is another that will have me scouring thrift stores and garage sales throughout the year. The only thing better than getting cookies is a fun vintage baking pan to go along with them. Besides that, they make GREAT photo props!
This sweet bag from my friend Mique at 30 Handmade Days comes complete with color palette and thoughtful saying. Just print onto simple kraft bags and tie with twine from The Twinery .
This idea from Martha Stewart may very well be my favorite of all, but I am pretty partial to glassware. Use decorative dishes {old or new} covered with cellophane as packaging for pretty cookie gifts.
These handmade petal boxes from Homespun Threads would be perfect for packaging cookies. Click HERE for a free template. If you need a smaller version you can find one HERE .
I used this tutorial from Adelyn Stone to dress up plain old throwaway jars for my gingerbread playdough. It would also work great for cookies. The things you can do with Mod Podge, right? Perfectly pretty and *almost* free.
I like this idea because the little scrap of yarn reminded me of Mom. I think she would like these. See the how-to and a recipe for “Grammy’s BEAUTIFUL Swedish pastries” at The Purl Bee .
I love the idea of using simple paper bags, like THESE from The Layer Cake Shop to wrap cookies. Simple but beautiful without a lot of fuss.
And another fave…use old tins to package your holiday cookie gifts as suggested by Country Living .
Or better yet…if you can’t find vintage tins, spray paint thrift store finds in fun colors or even with chalkboard paint as suggested by Cynthia Shaffer . You can also use Martha’s doily templates to dress up tired old tins.
That ought to be enough to keep you busy for days, but just in case I have a few more fun links to share…
- Here is a fun DIY cookie box tutorial from Inking Out of the Box
- If you need quality boxes for a GREAT price, check out BRP Box Shop . I buy all my boxes here. They have a great selection, service, free shipping, and will also send samples, so you can try before you buy.
- I’m really loving Paperjack’s Paper Ribbon store on ETSY. It is a simple touch that goes a long way in dressing up cookie packaging.
- If you’re planning on shipping cookies, learn all my best tips HERE .
- If you are still not sure what to wrap up, never fear. Here are 100 of the hottest holiday cookie recipes from myrecipes.com . They had me at chai tea eggnog cookies …
If you have seen any other unforgettable packaging ideas OR recipes, feel free to share. Christmas is right around the corner. Only ten short days to do all of the last minute shopping, baking, and the most important thing, spending time with the ones you love. No pressure or anything!
As for me, I’ll be spending the weekend “in town” {if you aren’t from the boonies that means the closest city will Target, Starbucks and a mall} picking up the last few items that I couldn’t find on Amazon. Wish me luck!
Happy Holidays everyone!

42 Creative Book Report Ideas for Students
Inspire your students to share their love of books.
Responding to what you read is an important literacy skill. Reading about other people’s experiences and perspectives helps kids learn about the world. And although students don’t need to dive deeply into every single book they read, occasionally digging into characters, settings, and themes can help them learn to look beyond the prose. Here are 42 creative book report ideas designed to make reading more meaningful.
1. Concrete Found Poem
This clever activity is basically a shape poem made up of words, phrases, and whole sentences found in the books students read. The words come together to create an image that represents something from the story.
2. Graphic Novel
Have students rewrite the book they are reading, or a chapter of their book, as a graphic novel. Set parameters for the assignment such as including six scenes from the story, three characters, details about the setting, etc. And, of course, include detailed illustrations to accompany the story.
3. Book Snaps
Book Snaps are a way for students to visually show how they are reacting to, processing, and/or connecting with a text. First, students snap a picture of a page in the book they are reading. Then, they add comments, images, highlights, and more.
4. Diary Entry
Have your students place themselves in the shoes of one of the characters from their book and write a first-person diary entry of a critical moment from the story. Ask them to choose a moment in the story where the character has plenty of interaction and emotion to share in a diary entry.
5. Character To-Do List
This fun activity is an off-the-beaten-path way to dive deep into character analysis. Get inside the head of the main character in a book and write a to-do list that they might write. Use actual information from the text, but also make inferences into what that character may wish to accomplish.
6. Mint Tin Book Report
There are so many super-creative, open-ended projects you can use mint tins for. This teacher blogger describes the process of creating book reports using them. There’s even a free template for cards that fit inside.
7. Fictional Yearbook Entries
Ask your students to create a yearbook based on the characters and setting in the book. What do they look like? Cut out magazine pictures to give a good visual image for their school picture. What kind of superlative might they get? Best looking? Class clown? What clubs would they be in or lead? Did they win any awards? It should be obvious from their small yearbooks whether your students dug deep into the characters in their books. They may also learn that who we are as individuals is reflected in what we choose to do with our lives.
8. Book Report Cake
This project would be perfect for a book tasting in your classroom! Each student presents their book report in the shape of food. See the sandwich and pizza options above and check out this blog for more delicious ideas.
9. Current Events Comparison
Have students locate three to five current events articles a character in their book might be interested in. After they’ve found the articles, have them explain why the character would find them interesting and how they relate to the book. Learning about how current events affect time, place, and people is critical to helping develop opinions about what we read and experience in life.
10. Sandwich Book Report
Yum! You’ll notice a lot of our creative book report ideas revolve around food. In this oldie but goodie, each layer of this book report sandwich covers a different element of the book—characters, setting, conflict, etc. A fun adaptation of this project is the book report cheeseburger.
11. Book Alphabet
Choose 15 to 20 alphabet books to help give your students examples of how they work around themes. Then ask your students to create their own Book Alphabet based on the book they read. What artifacts, vocabulary words, and names reflect the important parts of the book? After they find a word to represent each letter, have them write one sentence that explains where the word fits in.
12. Peekaboo Book Report
Using cardboard lap books (or small science report boards), students include details about their book’s main characters, plot, setting, conflict, resolution, etc. Then they draw a head and arms on card stock and attach them to the board from behind to make it look like the main character is peeking over the report.
13. T-Shirt Book Report
Another fun and creative idea: Create a wearable book report with a plain white tee. Come up with your own using Sharpie pens and acrylic paint. Get step-by-step directions .
14. Book Jacket
Have students create a new book jacket for their story. Include an attractive illustrated cover, a summary, a short biography of the author, and a few reviews from readers.
15. Watercolor Rainbow Book Report
This is great for biography research projects. Students cut out a photocopied image of their subject and glue it in the middle. Then, they draw lines from the image to the edges of the paper, like rays of sunshine, and fill in each section with information about the person. As a book report template, the center image could be a copy of the book cover, and each section expands on key information such as character names, theme(s), conflict, resolution, etc.
16. Act the Part
Have students dress up as their favorite character from the book and present an oral book report. If their favorite character is not the main character, retell the story from their point of view.
17. Pizza Box Book Report
If you’re looking for creative book report ideas that use upcycled materials, try this one using a pizza box. It works well for both nonfiction and fiction book reports. The top lid provides a picture of the book cover. Each wedge of the pizza pie tells part of the story.
18. Bookmark
Have students create a custom illustrated bookmark that includes drawings and words from either their favorite chapter or the entire book.
19. Book Reports in a Bag
Looking for book report ideas that really encourage creative thinking? With book reports in a bag, students read a book and write a summary. Then, they decorate a paper grocery bag with a scene from the book, place five items that represent something from the book inside the bag, and present the bag to the class.
20. Reading Lists for Characters
Ask your students to think about a character in their book. What kinds of books might that character like to read? Take them to the library to choose five books the character might have on their to-be-read list. Have them list the books and explain what each book might mean to the character. Post the to-be-read lists for others to see and choose from—there’s nothing like trying out a book character’s style when developing your own identity.
21. File Folder Book Report
Also called a lap book, this easy-to-make book report hits on all the major elements of a book study and gives students a chance to show what they know in a colorful way.
22. Collage
Create a collage using pictures and words that represent different parts of the book. Use old magazines or print pictures from the Internet.
23. Book Report Triorama
Who doesn’t love a multidimensional book report? This image shows a 3D model, but Elisha Ann provides a lesson to show students how to glue four triangles together to make a 4D model.
24. Timeline
Have students create a timeline of the main events from their book. Be sure to include character names and details for each event. Use 8 x 11 sheets of paper taped together or a long portion of bulletin board paper.
25. Clothes Hanger Book Report Mobile
This creative project doesn’t require a fancy or expensive supply list. Students just need an ordinary clothes hanger, strings, and paper. The body of the hanger is used to identify the book, and the cards on the strings dangling below are filled with key elements of the book, like characters, setting, and a summary.
26. Public Service Announcement
If a student has read a book about a cause that affects people, animals, or the environment, teach them about public service announcements . Once they understand what a PSA is, have them research the issue or cause that stood out in the book. Then give them a template for a storyboard so they can create their own PSA. Some students might want to take it a step further and create a video based on their storyboard. Consider sharing their storyboard or video with an organization that supports the cause or issue.
27. Dodecahedron Book Report
Creative book report ideas think outside the box. In this case, it’s a ball! SO much information can be covered on the 12 panels , and it allows students to take a deep dive in a creative way.
28. Character Cards
Make trading cards (like baseball cards) for a few characters from the book. On the front side, draw the character. On the back side, make a list of their character traits and include a quote or two.
29. Book Report Booklets
This clever book report is made from ordinary paper bags. Stack the paper bags on top of each other, fold them in half, and staple the closed-off ends of the bags together. Students can write, draw, and decorate on the paper bag pages. They can also record information on writing or drawing paper and glue the paper onto the pages. The open ends of the bags can be used as pockets to insert photos, cut-outs, postcards, or other flat items that help them tell their story.
30. Letter to the Author
Write a letter to the author of the book. Tell them three things you really liked about the story. Ask three questions about the plot, characters, or anything else you’re curious about.
31. Book Report Charm Bracelet
What a “charming” way to write a book report! Each illustrated bracelet charm captures a character, an event in the plot, setting, or other detail.
32. Fact Sheet
Have students create a list of 10 facts that they learned from reading the book. Have them write the facts in complete sentences, and be sure that each fact is something that they didn’t know before they read the book.
33. Cereal Box TV Book Report
This book report project is a low-tech version of a television made from a cereal box and two paper towel rolls. Students create the viewing screen cut-out at the top, then insert a scroll of paper with writing and illustrations inside the box. When the cardboard roll is rotated, the story unfolds.
34. Be a Character Therapist
Therapists work to uncover their clients’ fears based on their words and actions. When we read books, we must learn to use a character’s actions and dialogue to infer their fears. Many plots revolve around a character’s fear and the work it takes to overcome that fear. Ask students to identify a character’s fear and find 8 to 10 scenes that prove this fear exists. Then have them write about ways the character overcame the fear (or didn’t) in the story. What might the character have done differently?
35. Mind Maps
Mind maps can be a great way to synthesize what students have learned from reading a book. Plus, there are so many ways to approach them. Begin by writing a central idea in the middle of the page. For example, general information, characters, plot, etc. Then branch out from the center with ideas, thoughts, and connections to material from the book.
36. Foldables
From Rainbows Within Reach , this clever idea would be a great introduction to writing book reports. Adapt the flap categories for students at different levels. Adjust the number of categories (or flaps) per the needs of your students.
37. Board games
This is a great project if you want your students to develop a little more insight into what they’re reading. Have them think about the elements of their favorite board games and how they can be adapted to fit this assignment. For more, here are step-by-step directions .
38. Comic strips
If you’re looking for creative book report ideas for students who like graphic novels, try comic strips. Include an illustrated cover with the title and author. The pages of the book should retell the story using dialogue and descriptions of the setting and characters. Of course, no comic book would be complete without copious illustrations and thought bubbles.
39. Timeline
Create a timeline using a long roll of butcher paper, a poster board, or index cards taped together. For each event on the timeline, write a brief description of what happens. Add pictures, clip art, word art, and symbols to make the timeline more lively and colorful.
40. Cereal Box
Recycle a cereal box and create a book report Wheaties-style. Decorate all sides of the box with information about the book’s characters, setting, plot, summary, etc.
41. Wanted Poster
Make a “wanted” poster for one of the book’s main characters. Indicate whether they are wanted dead or alive. Include a picture of the character and a description of what the character is “wanted” for, three examples of the character showing this trait, and a detailed account of where the character was last seen.
42. Movie Version
If the book your students have read has been made into a movie, have them write a report about how the versions are alike and different. If the book has not been made into a movie, have them write a report telling how they would make it into a movie, using specific details from the book.

10 Brown Bag Speech Examples
What is a brown bag speech? A brown bag speech is a presentation that is given to a group of people who are eating their lunch. This type of presentation is informal, and it gives the speaker an opportunity to share their ideas with others in a relaxed setting.
If you have never given a brown bag speech before, don’t worry! We will provide you with all the information you need to write and deliver your own brown bag speech. Plus, we will also provide ten examples of brown bag speeches that you can use as inspiration.
What is a Brown Bag Speech?
A “brown bag speech” is a short, informal presentation given to a group of people, typically during lunchtime. The name comes from the fact that audiences are usually encouraged to bring their own lunch to the event.
Brown bag speeches are typically used to introduce new topics or ideas , or to provide updates on ongoing projects. If you’ve been asked to give a brown bag speech, don’t worry – it’s not as formal as it sounds.
How to Write a Brown Bag Speech
Brown bag speeches are a great way to inform your colleagues about something you’re passionate about in a quick, informal way. The goal is to deliver a short, informative speech that will leave your audience wanting to learn more.
Here are a few tips to help you get started:
- Choose a topic that you’re knowledgeable about and enthusiastic about. This will make it easier to stay within the time limit and keep your audience engaged.
- Keep it concise. Brown bag speeches are typically only 5-10 minutes long, so focus on one main point that you want to get across.
- Be prepared. Write out your speech in advance and practice delivery until you’re comfortable with the material. This will help you stay on track and avoid filler words like “um” and “like.”
- Engage with your audience. Make eye contact and use gestures to add interest to your presentation. And don’t forget to leave time for questions at the end!
Brown Bag Speech Examples
Now that we’ve covered the basics of brown bag speeches, let’s take a look at several examples:
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Overcoming Adversity
My name is _______ and I’m here to talk about overcoming adversity. We all face challenges in life, but it’s how we deal with those challenges that defines us.
I was born with a heart condition that required me to have open-heart surgery when I was just a baby. The doctors told my parents that I might not live to see my first birthday. But I beat the odds and celebrated my first birthday – and many more birthdays after that.
The adversity I faced early on in life taught me two important things: to never give up, and to appreciate every day. These are lessons that I carry with me to this day, and they’ve helped me through some tough times.
If you’re facing adversity right now, I want you to remember two things: you’re not alone, and it’s never too late to turn your life around.
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Making a Difference
My name is _______ and I want to talk to you about making a difference. We all have the power to make a positive impact on the world, no matter who we are or where we come from. We all have the power to make a positive impact on the world, no matter how big or small. Every act of kindness makes a difference.
I remember when I was a kid, there was this one day that changed my life. I was walking to school and I saw a homeless man on the side of the road. He was asking for change, but nobody would stop to help him.
That’s when I realized that I wanted to make a difference in the world. I wanted to be the one to help people who were struggling. I didn’t have much, but I could afford to buy him a meal. So, I did.
It might not seem like much, but that act of kindness made a difference in his life. It showed him that a perfect stranger cared about his wellbeing. And it also made a difference in mine. It taught me the importance of compassion and empathy .
If you’re looking for ways to make a difference, start with the people around you. Do something nice for somebody today, and you’ll be surprised by how good it makes you feel.
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Learning From Failure
My name is _______ and today I want to talk about failure. We’ve all experienced failure at one point or another, but it’s what we do after we fail that defines us.
I remember when I was in high school, I applied to my dream college and didn’t get in. It was a huge blow, and I felt like giving up but I didn’t. I used that experience as motivation to work harder, and I ended up getting into my second choice college.
Now, looking back, I’m glad that things worked out the way they did. If I had gotten into my first choice college, I might not have met my best friend or had the experiences that shaped me into the person I am today.
So if you’re feeling down after a failure, just remember that it’s not the end of the world. Use it as an opportunity to learn and grow, and you’ll be surprised at what you can achieve.
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Change
My name is _______ and today I want to talk about change – specifically, the change we want to see in the world. Too often, we wait for someone else to make the change we want to see. But the truth is, we have the power to create the change we want to see in our lives and in the world.
We can start by identifying the change we want to see. This can be something as small as making a commitment to recycling at home or something as big as starting a new business. Once we know what change we want to make, we need to take action. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but if we take small steps each day, eventually we will reach our goal.
I challenge each of you to make one change in your life this week. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is. Just take that first step and see what happens. You may be surprised at the difference you can make. Thank you for listening.
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Pursuing Your Dreams
I’m _______ and today I want to talk about following your dreams. It’s not always easy to pursue our dreams, but it’s important that we don’t give up on them. Our dreams are what make us unique and special. They are what make us who we are.
When we were children, we were encouraged to dream big. But as we get older, sometimes our dreams become more realistic and attainable. Pursuing our dreams can be scary , but it’s important to remember that anything is possible if we set our minds to it.
I encourage each of you to think about your dream and what you need to do to achieve it. Then take that first step – even if it’s a small one. Remember, you are capable of anything you set your mind to. Thank you for listening.
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Overcoming Obstacles
Hi, my name is _______ and I want to talk about overcoming obstacles. We all face challenges in our lives, but it’s how we deal with these challenges that defines us. It’s easy to give up when things get tough, but it’s important to remember that we are strong and capable of overcoming any obstacle.
The first step to overcoming an obstacle is acknowledging that it exists. Once we do this, we can begin to develop a plan to overcome it. This may involve seeking help from others or doing some research. Whatever the case may be, taking action will help us move closer to our goal.
The next time you’re facing a challenge, remember that you are not alone. There are people and resources available to help you. You are strong and capable of overcoming any obstacle. Thank you for listening.
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Taking Risks
My name is _______ and I’m here to talk about taking risks. In life, there’s no such thing as a sure thing. Every decision we make comes with some risk. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Taking risks can lead to new opportunities and experiences.
Of course, not all risks are equal. Some come with higher stakes than others. But no matter how big or small the risk may be, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons before making a decision. Once we’ve done this, we can decide if taking the risk is worth it.
When I was in my 20s, I had the opportunity to travel to Europe for a year. It was a big decision, as I had to make some tough choices and sacrifices, but I decided to go for it. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I gained so much from the experience and it’s something I would never have been able to do if I hadn’t taken that risk.
Sometimes taking a risk is scary, but it can also be exciting. It’s up to us to decide if the potential rewards are worth the risks involved. Thank you for listening.
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Being Yourself
Hi, my name is _______ and I want to talk about being yourself. In a world full of 8 billion people, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. We all have our own unique talents and qualities that make us who we are. It’s important to remember that we don’t have to be like everyone else to be successful. We can be our own selves and still achieve great things.
The pressure to conform can be strong, but it’s important to resist it. One of the most important things we can do in life is be true to ourselves. This means accepting who we are – both the good and the bad. It also means being honest with ourselves about our goals and aspirations.
When we are able to do this, we can begin to live our lives more authentically. When we’re true to ourselves, we’re happier and more fulfilled. We can also be a role model for others who may be struggling with the same issue.
So next time you’re feeling pressure to conform, remember that you are unique and special. You have your own talents and qualities that make you you. We all have something special to offer the world. So be proud of who you are and never apologize for being yourself. Thank you for listening.
An Example Brown Bag Speech About Staying Motivated
Hi, my name is _______ and I want to talk about staying motivated. We all have goals and dreams that we want to achieve. But sometimes it’s hard to stay motivated when things get tough. Life can be full of setbacks and roadblocks, but it’s important to remember that we can overcome anything if we just stay focused on our goals.
One way to stay motivated is by setting small goals. When we break our larger goals down into smaller pieces, they seem more manageable and less daunting. Another way to stay motivated is by finding a role model or someone who has already achieved what we’re striving for. Seeing someone else achieve our goal can show us that it’s possible for us to do the same thing.
Staying motivated can be a challenge, but it’s important to remember that we can achieve anything we set our minds to. If we stay focused on our goals and don’t give up, we will eventually reach them. Thank you for listening.
Hi, my name is _______ and I’m here to talk about change. Change is something that happens to all of us. It can be big or small, positive or negative. But one thing is for sure – change is always happening. Sometimes change can be hard to deal with, but it’s also an opportunity for growth and new experiences.
One way to deal with change is to embrace it. Instead of resisting it, try to see it as a chance to learn and grow. Another way to deal with change is to take it one step at a time. Don’t try to do too much at once. Break the changes down into smaller pieces so that they’re more manageable.
Change can be difficult, but it’s also a natural part of life. Embracing change and taking it one step at a time can help us deal with it in a positive way. Thank you for listening.
If you’re still feeling stuck, try thinking about a topic that you’re passionate about or that you know a lot about. Once you have a topic in mind , start by writing out your main point. Then, flesh out your speech with supporting points and examples.
Once you have a draft of your speech, practice delivery until you’re comfortable with the material. And don’t forget to leave time for questions at the end! Brown bag speeches are a great opportunity to engage with your colleagues and learn more about what they’re interested in.
We hope these brown bag speech examples have inspired you to write your own! Remember, the key is to focus on one main point and make it engaging. And don’t forget to leave time for questions at the end. Good luck!

Brown Bag Sessions: Yes, your team should have them
Sometimes the best way to get results and draw out new insights involves a formal event: an off-site retreat, a catered lunch, a half-day seminar, you get the idea.
But there are plenty of times when that sort of thing just isn’t possible. You might not have the budget for it, or your team might be scattered across hundreds of miles and multiple time zones.
That’s where the brown bag session comes in.
If you’re looking for an informal meeting strategy that’s versatile enough to accommodate numerous objectives (including building a positive team culture and strengthening that culture over time ), then the brown bag session meeting concept is worth exploring.
The 4 types of brown bag meetings
Once you determine a reason for conducting a brown bag meeting, you’ll need to define and communicate what type of meeting you’re conducting. Brown bag sessions can have different functions, and attendees will need to prepare differently for each.
Below are the four types. Be sure to communicate these expectations to all attendees so no one feels pressured or put on the spot — that would defeat the purpose of these informal meetings!
1. Seminar meeting
A seminar meeting involves a single speaker or presenter sharing knowledge with the group. It’s the least collaborative style, though a Q&A at the end is common.
Seminar meetings are a great way to introduce a new topic or technology or to train a group in something everyone can use (such as building a healthier developer culture ). Seminar meetings can also cover topics unrelated to job roles, from hobby groups to retirement planning.
2. Small group meeting
A small group meeting involves a small amount of prep work. Attendees will answer questions in front of each other, which usually works best when people know the questions ahead of time. These are great moments for problem-solving, team building, and sharing perspectives. Expect a healthy discussion of people’s answers.
3. Combination meeting
A combination brown bag session combines the first two types. During these meetings, an expert or leader presents solo, after which individuals contribute their answers to one or more predefined questions.
4. Social meeting
Icebreakers , team-building activities , and just plain social lunches all have a place in building the camaraderie that teams need to succeed and trust one another.
A social brown bag meeting could look like a department lunch in the courtyard (or over Zoom) or a team lunch where work discussions are off-limits. These can be a great way for team members to learn about each other as people, not just producers and performers.
How do you run a brown bag session?
Running an informal meeting with no real prep sounds simple enough, but it’s certainly possible for lunch and learns to go poorly. Stick with these tips to make your next brown bagger successful.
Keep it informal
If you’re like most businesses, you have plenty of formal meetings. And if you’re in leadership, you probably run quite a few of them. It’s easy to fall into default mode and try to control the brown bag session.
Avoid this temptation. When you keep it informal, you encourage more open participation and may draw out ideas and opinions that would’ve otherwise stayed hidden.
2. Avoid a formal agenda
Much like the previous point, setting a formal agenda is a surefire way to inject formality into these meetings, which are supposed to be pretty informal.
3. Create a comfortable space for open communication
Part of the reason for keeping brown bag sessions informal is that you want to draw out ideas from people who might otherwise stay silent. Doing this requires making people comfortable enough to open up.
Be open to new ideas, even if that means hearing about someone’s random hobby for a little longer than you’d like. Because if you shut down the hobby conversation, you probably shut down the work one, too.
Benefits of brown bag sessions
So, what are the benefits of these sessions (beyond learning what everyone likes to bring for lunch)? It turns out there are quite a few benefits of brown bag meetings.
Promotes 2-way communication
Many organizations hear complaints about needing better communication. It’s often hard to parse what exactly people want, though. Often, it’s just as much about being heard as it is about hearing more from the top leadership.
Informal sessions are one way to promote this kind of two-way communication. Even more than usual, leaders should listen during these events and resist the urge to talk or direct.
2. Increases team morale
One of the perks of holding a brown bag seminar is building team morale. When you help employees through informal training during the lunch break, one of the takeaways is that you care about your company culture . Knowing this can add a boost of morale to any workday.
3. Inspires creativity
Formal meetings over video or in the conference room aren’t always the most inspiring things and can even put a damper on creativity. But when people are engaging casually (and enjoying their own food!), it’s much easier for the creative juices to flow.
4. Strengthens team relationships
Social brown bag lunch meetings can do so much for team relationships. Knowing even a little bit about teammates outside their job context helps humanize team members to one another and may even lead to workplace friendships.
Brown bag session topics
Looking for inspiration to help you launch new (or better) brown bag sessions? Here are a few to get you started:
- Informal lunch-and-learn seminars on health and wellness topics (keep Human Resources in the loop for compliance and propriety)
- Informative seminars about retirement plans or optional insurance coverages
- Industry change discourse with an expert guest speaker
- Time management strategies or efficiency “hacks”
If your remote or hybrid team is already feeling “Zoom fatigue,” try these research-backed strategies before adding more informal video meetings to the mix.

⚡️start fast with a range meeting template, brown bag session faqs, what is a brown bag session.
A brown bag session is a meeting that typically occurs over or during lunch and uses an informal and often collaborative approach.
It’s not a formal, catered affair: Attendees are expected to bring their own lunch (hence the “brown bag”) if they plan to eat during the meetup. Brown bag sessions tend to have a smaller, more social and intimate feel than the typical department or team meeting, which often helps to open up freer conversations and idea sharing.
If you’ve not come across the term before, don’t worry: The brown bag session goes by several other names. Some people call it a Lunch and Learn or even a Power Hour — just to name a few.
Whatever you call it, the basic concept is the same: These are informal gatherings, usually around lunchtime, often with team building, training and education, or socialization goals.
When should you have a brown bag session?
You can hold brown bag sessions anytime, but if you want people to have a chance at understanding the name, around lunch is your best bet. (An even better bet: call it something else!)
Beyond the time of day, you should consider a brown bag session for any scenario where an informal meeting could help.
Getting teams more comfortable with one another, presenting professional development information, and offering information or training that is useful outside the workplace are a few examples.
