How did April Fools' Day start and what are some famous pranks?
By Aliza Chasan
April 1, 2024 / 6:00 AM EDT / CBS News
Historians aren't pulling your leg when they say no one is quite sure about the origins of April Fools' Day.
April 1, the annual day of shenanigans, pranks, tricks and hoaxes, falls on Monday this year. While historians are unsure of the exact source of the tradition, they do know the custom goes back centuries, at least back to Renaissance Europe and possibly back to Roman times. Here's a look at what the experts say.
Theories, both real and false, tie April Fools' Day to Roman times
Some believe April Fools' Day dates back to Hilaria festivals celebrated during classical Roman times. The festival was held on March 25 which, in Roman terms, was called the "eighth of the Calends of April," according to the Library of Congress.
One theory tying the source of April Fools' Day to Roman times is a hoax. In 1983, an Associated Press reporter reached out to Joseph Boskin, a historian at Boston University, to discuss the origins of April Fools' Day. Boskin spun a tall tale to the reporter, assuming it would be fact-checked and revealed as fake.
It wasn't.
According to the story Boskin made up, a group of jesters convinced Emperor Constantine to make one of them king for a day. The appointed jester, named Kugel, declared it would be a day of levity.
"I got an immediate phone call from an editor there, who was furious, saying that I had ruined the career of a young reporter," Boskin said in a Boston University post. "He said I told a lie. 'A lie?' I asked, 'I was telling an April Fools' Day story.'"
Middle Ages
Some historians believe France is responsible for the humorous tradition, tying it to a calendar change in 1582, according to the History Channel . That year, France implemented the Gregorian calendar, shifting the start of the New Year from the spring equinox, which usually falls around April 1, to January 1.
After the change, people who wrongly celebrated the new year in late March and early April were called "April fools."
The first clear reference to April Fools' Day is a 1561 Flemish poem by Eduard De Dene, which tells the story of a servant being sent on "fool's errands" because it's April 1, according to the Library of Congress.
What are some famous April Fools' Day pranks?
In 1957, the BBC ran a broadcast on the Italian spaghetti harvest that pretended the pasta was being harvested from trees.
The BBC also ran an April Fools' report on flying penguins in 2008.
In Los Angeles, airline passengers were greeted with a banner saying "Welcome to Chicago" after landing on April 1, 1992, CBS Sunday Morning previously reported.
Taco Bell in 1996 advertised that it had bought the Liberty Bell and renamed it the "Taco Liberty Bell," according to the company.
As part of a 1997 April Fools' Day joke, Alex Trebek, host of "Jeopardy," swapped places with "Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak, according to jeopardy.com .
On April 1, 2015, streaming giant Netflix shared faux public service announcements to remind viewers to "Binge Responsibly."

What is a text summarizer?
A text summarizer is an online tool that uses AI and complex algorithms to condense a text from its long, detailed version to one that is short and comprehensible. A summarizer tool carries all of the key points in a text over to the condensed version. The content you receive contains a complete overview of the text. For example, pasting 2000 words worth of content into the summarizer can result in a more digestible 200-word version, eliminating nearly ¾ of the text.

How does the summarizer tool work?
Our text summarizer uses AI algorithms to “read” the full content, understand its meaning, and break it down into a more condensed version. The algorithm recognizes key topics and perspectives to note the levels of importance for each word, sentence, phrase, and paragraph. In this way, the filler text can be removed without harming the value of the content. Thus, you are provided with a summary of the text you’ve pasted without compromise. Popular websites have provided summaries of textbook chapters, short stories, novels, and more for years. The Website and Text Summarizer by Smodin improve the utility of CliffsNotes by utilizing AI to summarize any text, not just popular books, with the click of a button.
What types of content does this text summarizing tool work on?
Our text summarizer works on all types of text, even full websites. You can either copy and paste the individual text into the summarizer or you can paste the link to a website at the bottom of the tool. A comprehensive list of what can be summarized is located directly underneath the tool if you are curious about exactly what pieces of content work best with the tool.
Why would you use a summarizer?
Compressing the content of any lengthy text like a research paper, essay, report, or book is beneficial to the reader in a variety of ways. Most likely, the number one reason a person would use a summarizing tool is to avoid reading the actual text. The summary that appears contains all of the main points of interest that can be read in a fraction of the time it would take someone to read the full text. Reasons for this include not having enough time, having no interest in the topic, meeting a closely approaching deadline, and more. Another reason why someone would use a text summarizer is to better understand a text they have read. Because the tool provides a condensed version of the content provided, a reader can verify their comprehension of the main topics, themes, and points of interest. In this way, a summarizing tool can be considered as a strong study guide. The purpose may be different for summarizing websites. Of course, you can paste the link to an individual blog post, article, or news piece and receive a summary as mentioned above. However, some websites are difficult to understand differently. The purpose of a product, brand, or service may not be clear when scanning the full website. Pasting the link to that website will provide a summary of the major points on that site, which means you get a better view of what that company or product does.
Who uses text summary tools?
A wide variety of people use summary tools for different reasons. Students use tools of this kind because it’s generally required that a student must read a large quantity of text. Simply put, there’s not enough time to cover all texts required in rigorous study courses. Therefore, a text summary tool can help students to complete assignments on time while ensuring they understand the content. Students also use these tools to ensure their written content covers the necessary topic. Teachers also have a lot of content to read, whether it’s for grading papers and reviewing student assignments, or creating lesson plans. A summarizer can quickly create an overview of any text, allowing teachers to avoid reviewing content that’s unrelated to the topic or focusing on assignments that need more attention than others. Journalists and editors use tools of this kind to condense information into bite-sized pieces. This improves the legibility of headlines and introductory paragraphs. Journalists also need to quote many sources or summarize an entire speech into a single paragraph. Using a summarizer tool makes it entirely possible without making an article excruciatingly long or misinterpreting what someone says. Editors, as well, can use this tool to avoid the time-consuming nature of reviewing lengthy articles. They can paste the content in the summarizer and receive a reduced text that displays the theme of the content. Copywriters (as well as students and other types of writers) can use this tool to create a closing paragraph or statement. It can be difficult to encapsulate an entire work into a single paragraph, especially after spending so much time writing the body of the story. Many writers struggle to leave out the parts they’ve become attached to or even just find the right words to finish their piece of content. With a text summarizer, writers can simply paste the reduced version of their content as the conclusion without sacrificing the intent of the article, itself.
The Difference Between Summarizing and Paraphrasing
Please note that our Text and Website Summarizer Tool is not paraphrasing. So, what is paraphrasing, and what’s the difference between summarizing and paraphrasing? Paraphrasing is changing the text at hand into your own, unique version while keeping the meaning of the original content. Usually when paraphrasing, the content becomes shorter but is not used as a summary. Rather, paraphrasing takes the information you deem most important and converts it into your own words. Summarizing is simply converting a long piece of text into a much shorter version by only keeping the major points of interest. It is not rewritten, rather it removes the unnecessary pieces of information to provide you with a short piece that explains an entire passage. Summarizers are not plagiarism-proof, meaning if you copy and paste a generated summary, you might be flagged for plagiarism. AT&T says a data breach leaked millions of customers’ information online. Were you affected?
FILE - The sign in front of an AT&T retail store is seen in Miami, July 18, 2019. The theft of sensitive information belonging to millions of AT&T’s current and former customers has been recently discovered online, the telecommunications giant said Saturday, March 30, 2024. In an announcement addressing the data breach, AT&T said that a dataset found on the dark web contains information including some Social Security numbers and passcodes for about 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders. NEW YORK (AP) — The theft of sensitive information belonging to millions of AT&T’s current and former customers has been recently discovered online, the telecommunications giant said this weekend.
In a Saturday announcement addressing the data breach, AT&T said that a dataset found on the “dark web” contains information including some Social Security numbers and passcodes for about 7.6 million current account holders and 65.4 million former account holders.
Whether the data “originated from AT&T or one of its vendors” is still unknown, the Dallas-based company noted — adding that it had launched an investigation into the incident. AT&T has also begun notifying customers whose personal information was compromised.
Here’s what you need to know.
WHAT INFORMATION WAS COMPROMISED IN THIS BREACH?
Although varying by each customer and account, AT&T says that information involved in this breach included Social Security numbers and passcodes — which, unlike passwords, are numerical PINS that are typically four digits long.
Full names, email addresses, mailing address, phone numbers, dates of birth and AT&T account numbers may have also been compromised. The impacted data is from 2019 or earlier and does not appear to include financial information or call history, the company said.
HOW DO I KNOW IF I WAS AFFECTED?
Consumers impacted by this breach should be receiving an email or letter directly from AT&T about the incident. The email notices began going out on Saturday, an AT&T spokesperson confirmed to The Associated Press.
WHAT ACTION HAS AT&T TAKEN?
Beyond these notifications, AT&T said that it had already reset the passcodes of current users. The company added that it would pay for credit monitoring services where applicable.
AT&T also said that it “launched a robust investigation” with internal and external cybersecurity experts to investigate the situation further.
HAS AT&T SEEN DATA BREACHES LIKE THIS BEFORE?
AT&T has seen several data breaches that range in size and impact over the years .
While the company says the data in this latest breach surfaced on a hacking forum nearly two weeks ago, it closely resembles a similar breach that surfaced in 2021 but which AT&T never acknowledged, cybersecurity researcher Troy Hunt told the AP Saturday.
“If they assess this and they made the wrong call on it, and we’ve had a course of years pass without them being able to notify impacted customers,” then it’s likely the company will soon face class action lawsuits, said Hunt, founder of an Australia-based website that warns people when their personal information has been exposed.
A spokesperson for AT&T declined to comment further when asked about these similarities Sunday.
HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF GOING FORWARD?
Avoiding data breaches entirely can be tricky in our ever-digitized world, but consumers can take some steps to help protect themselves going forward.
The basics include creating hard-to-guess passwords and using multifactor authentication when possible. If you receive a notice about a breach, it’s good idea to change your password and monitor account activity for any suspicious transactions. You’ll also want to visit a company’s official website for reliable contact information — as scammers sometimes try to take advantage of news like data breaches to gain your trust through look-alike phishing emails or phone calls.
In addition, the Federal Trade Commission notes that nationwide credit bureaus — such as Equifax, Experian and TransUnion — offer free credit freezes and fraud alerts that consumers can set up to help protect themselves from identity theft and other malicious activity.

NC State’s DJ Burns Had Definitive One-Word Answer About His Chances of Playing in NFL
- Author: Madison Williams
In this story:
NC State forward DJ Burns Jr. has quickly become one of college basketball's biggest stars during the Wolfpack's Final Four run in this year's NCAA tournament.
Burns's performances on the court have been impressive, but he's also stood out because of his size—he stands at 6'9" and weighs 275 pounds. He isn't built like a stereotypical college basketball player, even one that plays down in the post.
This has led sports fans to wonder if Burns has ever had interest in playing football, potentially even in the NFL. Burns was asked about this speculation on Thursday ahead of Saturday's matchup against Purdue, and he was quick to give a simple one-word response.
"Zero," Burns said when asked about the chances of him playing in the NFL.

Various NFL scouts spoke with The 33rd Team 's Ari Meirov about Burns's NFL prospects, and the consensus was that teams possibly would be interested in Burns at the end of the draft to make the 90-man roster just to see what talent Burns has on the football field.
Either way, Burns appears completely focused on his basketball career, and, more importantly, on taking NC State to a national title game.

Did you know?
Cite , Sight , and Site
As homophones —words that sound alike but are distinct— cite , sight , and site are easily confused, but they have different meanings, uses, and origins.
Cite is most often encountered in the sense of "to name in a citation "—that is, a line or short section taken from a piece of writing or a speech; it may also mean "to mention as an example" or "to order to appear in a court of law." Cite is from the Latin citare , "to rouse, call on, summon," source too of citation and recite .
Most of the senses of sight are concerned with seeing. A wonderful spectacle might be described as a sight , as might the general capacity to see anything ("my sight is not as good as it once was"). Sight is also used in a number of fixed phrases, such as "out of sight, out of mind," "sight unseen," and "set one's sights on." Sight comes from Old English gesiht , meaning "the faculty or act of sight, thing seen."
Site is most often concerned with location; it is related to situate , "to locate," and situation , "relative position or combination of circumstances at a particular moment." A building site is the place where a building is, or will be, located. In contemporary English, site is frequently used as a shortened form of website , to refer to the location of a group of web pages. Site comes from Latin situs , meaning "place, position, site."
Associating citation with cite , eyesight with sight , and situate with site may be helpful in applying these correctly.

Strands answers and hints below
Looking for Saturday’s Strands hints, spangram and answers? You can find them here.
It’s Sunday, a week after Easter, so no theme puzzles this time around. Rather, we have a new Strands letter jumble to sort through, and this one is on the harder side I would say, if we’re measuring them in one big pile. Here are some hints and answers, but first...
How To Play Strands
The New York Times’ Strands puzzle is a play on the classic word search. It’s in beta for now, which means it’ll only stick around if enough people play it every day.
There’s a new game of Strands to play every day. The game will present you with a six by eight grid of letters. The aim is to find a group of words that have something in common, and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you find a theme word, it will remain highlighted in blue.
You’ll also need to find a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram links two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a proper name, the spangram can be a proper name. When you find the spangram, it will remain highlighted in yellow.
Every letter is used once in one of the theme words and spangram. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally, and it’s possible to switch directions in the middle of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.
The Best Gaming Mouse That’ll Improve Your Aim
If you find three valid words of at least four letters that are not part of the theme, you’ll unlock the Hint button. Clicking this will highlight the letters that make up one of the theme words.
Be warned: You’ll need to be on your toes. Sometimes you’ll need to fill the missing word(s) in a phrase. On other days, the game may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The difficulty will vary from day to day, and the puzzle creators will try to surprise you sometimes.
What Is Today’s Strands Hint?
You may want to start scrolling slowly. This is where hints and answers start, so if you took a wrong turn and ended up here, you may want to head back where you came from.

My own personal hint today is going to be:

What Are Today’s Strands Answers?
Now are getting into full spoiler territory with the spangram and answers to the puzzle itself. First we’ll start with the spangram and if that’s not enough for you, we can move to the full answers. The spangram is:
LIGHTWEIGHT
That’s a rare one that goes top to bottom instead of across, and here’s how that’s going to sit on the page:
Now we have the full list of answers below:
So, these are all things that are A) lightweight and B) tend to get blown away, which is a pretty random category that I had a really hard time nailing down. Ironically, while you can spell LIGHTWEIGHT for the spangram, you can also connect FEATHER to spell FEATHERWEIGHT instead, which really confused me that it wasn’t one of the words. Figured it out eventually, I suppose.
The rest were still pretty hard and I used a lot of hints. I was not going to spot EYELASH on my own, for instance. BUBBLE and BALLOON were pretty easy, though all the double letters, including triple Bs, were confusing at first. I am not sure how they think of categories like this as it’s so random. I wonder if they’re asking AI for ideas these days.
So yeah, I would put this on the harder side of puzzles I’ve done, just because of the obscure category. Hopefully the hints and answers helped, see you next time.
