Why do your homework when a chatbot can do it for you? A new artificial intelligence tool called ChatGPT has thrilled the Internet with its superhuman abilities to solve math problems, churn out college essays and write research papers.

After the developer OpenAI released the text-based system to the public last month, some educators have been sounding the alarm about the potential that such AI systems have to transform academia, for better and worse.

"AI has basically ruined homework," said Ethan Mollick, a professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business, on Twitter.

The tool has been an instant hit among many of his students, he told NPR in an interview on Morning Edition , with its most immediately obvious use being a way to cheat by plagiarizing the AI-written work, he said.

Academic fraud aside, Mollick also sees its benefits as a learning companion.

He's used it as his own teacher's assistant, for help with crafting a syllabus, lecture, an assignment and a grading rubric for MBA students.

"You can paste in entire academic papers and ask it to summarize it. You can ask it to find an error in your code and correct it and tell you why you got it wrong," he said. "It's this multiplier of ability, that I think we are not quite getting our heads around, that is absolutely stunning," he said.

A convincing — yet untrustworthy — bot

But the superhuman virtual assistant — like any emerging AI tech — has its limitations. ChatGPT was created by humans, after all. OpenAI has trained the tool using a large dataset of real human conversations.

"The best way to think about this is you are chatting with an omniscient, eager-to-please intern who sometimes lies to you," Mollick said.

It lies with confidence, too. Despite its authoritative tone, there have been instances in which ChatGPT won't tell you when it doesn't have the answer.

That's what Teresa Kubacka, a data scientist based in Zurich, Switzerland, found when she experimented with the language model. Kubacka, who studied physics for her Ph.D., tested the tool by asking it about a made-up physical phenomenon.

"I deliberately asked it about something that I thought that I know doesn't exist so that they can judge whether it actually also has the notion of what exists and what doesn't exist," she said.

ChatGPT produced an answer so specific and plausible sounding, backed with citations, she said, that she had to investigate whether the fake phenomenon, "a cycloidal inverted electromagnon," was actually real.

When she looked closer, the alleged source material was also bogus, she said. There were names of well-known physics experts listed – the titles of the publications they supposedly authored, however, were non-existent, she said.

"This is where it becomes kind of dangerous," Kubacka said. "The moment that you cannot trust the references, it also kind of erodes the trust in citing science whatsoever," she said.

Scientists call these fake generations "hallucinations."

"There are still many cases where you ask it a question and it'll give you a very impressive-sounding answer that's just dead wrong," said Oren Etzioni, the founding CEO of the Allen Institute for AI , who ran the research nonprofit until recently. "And, of course, that's a problem if you don't carefully verify or corroborate its facts."

Sam Altman, OpenAI's CEO, said earlier this month it would be a mistake to rely on the tool for anything "important" in its current iteration. "It's a preview of progress," he tweeted .

The failings of another AI language model unveiled by Meta last month led to its shutdown. The company withdrew its demo for Galactica, a tool designed to help scientists, just three days after it encouraged the public to test it out, following criticism that it spewed biased and nonsensical text.

Similarly, Etzioni says ChatGPT doesn't produce good science. For all its flaws, though, he sees ChatGPT's public debut as a positive. He sees this as a moment for peer review.

"ChatGPT is just a few days old, I like to say," said Etzioni, who remains at the AI institute as a board member and advisor. It's "giving us a chance to understand what he can and cannot do and to begin in earnest the conversation of 'What are we going to do about it?' "

The alternative, which he describes as "security by obscurity," won't help improve fallible AI, he said. "What if we hide the problems? Will that be a recipe for solving them? Typically — not in the world of software — that has not worked out."

Toyota's Robots Are Learning to Do Housework—By Copying Humans

As someone who quite enjoys the Zen of tidying up, I was only too happy to grab a dustpan and brush and sweep up some beans spilled on a tabletop while visiting the Toyota Research Lab in Cambridge, Massachusetts last year. The chore was more challenging than usual because I had to do it using a teleoperated pair of robotic arms with two-fingered pincers for hands.

As I sat before the table, using a pair of controllers like bike handles with extra buttons and levers, I could feel the sensation of grabbing solid items, and also sense their heft as I lifted them, but it still took some getting used to.

After several minutes tidying, I continued my tour of the lab and forgot about my brief stint as a teacher of robots. A few days later, Toyota sent me a video of the robot I’d operated sweeping up a similar mess on its own, using what it had learned from my demonstrations combined with a few more demos and several more hours of practice sweeping inside a simulated world.

Most robots—and especially those doing valuable labor in warehouses or factories—can only follow preprogrammed routines that require technical expertise to plan out. This makes them very precise and reliable but wholly unsuited to handling work that requires adaptation, improvisation, and flexibility—like sweeping or most other chores in the home. Having robots learn to do things for themselves has proven challenging because of the complexity and variability of the physical world and human environments, and the difficulty of obtaining enough training data to teach them to cope with all eventualities.

There are signs that this could be changing. The dramatic improvements we’ve seen in AI chatbots over the past year or so have prompted many roboticists to wonder if similar leaps might be attainable in their own field. The algorithms that have given us impressive chatbots and image generators are also already helping robots learn more efficiently.

The sweeping robot I trained uses a machine-learning system called a diffusion policy, similar to the ones that power some AI image generators , to come up with the right action to take next in a fraction of a second, based on the many possibilities and multiple sources of data. The technique was developed by Toyota in collaboration with researchers led by Shuran Song , a professor at Columbia University who now leads a robot lab at Stanford.

Toyota is trying to combine that approach with the kind of language models that underpin ChatGPT and its rivals. The goal is to make it possible to have robots learn how to perform tasks by watching videos, potentially turning resources like YouTube into powerful robot training resources. Presumably they will be shown clips of people doing sensible things, not the dubious or dangerous stunts often found on social media.

“If you've never touched anything in the real world, it's hard to get that understanding from just watching YouTube videos,” Russ Tedrake, vice president of Robotics Research at Toyota Research Institute and a professor at MIT, says. The hope, Tedrake says, is that some basic understanding of the physical world combined with data generated in simulation, will enable robots to learn physical actions from watching YouTube clips. The diffusion approach “is able to absorb the data in a much more scalable way,” he says.

Toyota announced its Cambridge robotics institute back in 2015 along with a second institute and headquarters in Palo Alto, California. In its home country of Japan—as in the US and other rich nations—the population is aging fast. The company hopes to build robots that can help people continue living independent lives as they age.

The lab in Cambridge has dozens of robots working away on chores including peeling vegetables, using hand mixers, preparing snacks, and flipping pancakes. Language models are proving helpful because they contain information about the physical world, helping the robots make sense of the objects in front of them and how they can be used.

It’s important to note that despite many demos slick enough to impress a casual visitor, the robots still make lots of errors. Like earlier versions of the model behind ChatGPT, they can veer between seeming humanlike and making strange errors. I saw one robot effortlessly operating a manual hand mixer and another struggling to grasp a bottletop.

Toyota is not the only big tech company hoping to use language models to advance robotics research. Last week, for example, a team at Google DeepMind recently revealed Auto-R , software that uses a large language model to help robots determine the tasks that they could realistically—and safely—do in the real world.

Progress is also being made on the hardware needed to advance robot learning. Last week a group at Stanford University led by Chelsea Finn posted videos of a low-cost mobile teleoperated robotics system called ALOHA. They say the fact that it is mobile allows the robot to tackle a wider range of tasks, giving it a wider range of experiences to learn from than a system locked in one place.

And while it’s easy to be dazzled by robot demo videos, the ALOHA team was good enough to post a highlight reel of failure modes showing the robot fumbling, breaking, and spilling things. Hopefully another robot will learn how to clean up after it.

As teachers, we have all seen the impact that technology can have on the classroom. From smartphones and tablets to educational software and online resources, there are countless tools that can help our students learn and grow. However, there is also a dark side to technology in education, and it is something that we need to be aware of and address.

One of the biggest concerns is the use of AI bots to do students’ homework for them. With the rise of artificial intelligence and the increasing availability of AI-powered tools, it is becoming easier and easier for students to use these bots to complete their assignments without actually learning the material.

We need to make it clear that cheating is unacceptable

On the surface, this may seem like a harmless way for students to save time and effort, but it is actually a serious problem for several reasons. First and foremost, using AI bots to do homework undermines the entire purpose of education. The goal of homework is to reinforce the concepts that students are learning in class, not to simply churn out answers without understanding them. By using AI bots to do their homework, students are cheating themselves out of a valuable learning opportunity.

Furthermore, using AI bots to do homework sets a dangerous precedent. It teaches students that they can take shortcuts and cheat their way through school, rather than putting in the hard work and effort that are necessary for success. Robots are meant to automate repetitive tasks, leaving humans free for more creative and rewarding endeavors. And what is more repetitive than having to copy text from a book several times?

The writing robot that can copy texts for students

Enter a very enterprising young Chinese teen. She used the money she received over Chinese New Year to buy a so-called copying robot to do her homework for her. In all fairness, the homework, in this case, was to copy passages from a textbook. Chinese teachers give this kind of homework, even during the Lunar Year holidays, so students can practice the thousands of Chinese characters that make up Mandarin Chinese.

The device, a metal frame, and pen comes with the marketing message that it could “imitate all sorts of handwriting”. In her case, the device performed perfectly, finishing all her homework in record time and in her handwriting. The incident was reported , including the destruction of the device by the girl’s mother. Far from being criticized for her dishonesty, the girl was praised by netizens for her initiative and the company that manufactures the writing robot has been inundated with inquiries ever since.

In an investigation, the South China Morning Post found several entries for a so-called “copying robot” on the e-commerce platform Taobao. It seems like a good idea to let a robot do something for you that is boring and repetitive, but you have to ask yourself if that’s a sensible thing to do. Surely you miss out on a learning opportunity if you let a robot do your work for you.

That doesn’t mean that robots cannot be useful when it comes to school homework. Rather than doing the work for you, your robot can help you to do the work and master the concepts in the curriculum. 

The robot that can do math homework

For kids who might feel burdened by too much homework, the future holds much promise. Christopher Yan and Derek He have come up with a concept of a homework-solving robot. Their prototype can solve math homework. What’s more, when it’s completed, the robot will be able to write the answers according to the user’s handwriting, so a teacher won’t suspect that the work was not done by the student. Their project known as Homework Help , picked up the top honors at this year’s PennApps, one of the largest student hackathons in the world, held at University of Pennsylvania.

It seems there is a need for robots that can help students with their homework. Scientists have noticed that children form close emotional bonds with social robots. Using robots to assist teachers and improve student learning

What role could robots have in supporting teachers in their work with students? Researchers have looked into how they could be brought into the classroom to assist teachers and positively impact student learning. They say the effective use of robots holds substantial promise in the field of education and could prove useful in allowing for more one-to-one teaching in the classroom.

The research, Teaching robots social autonomy from in situ human guidance , evaluated an innovative approach in robotics known as SPARC (Supervised Progressively Autonomous Robot Competencies). This was done through a field study and set out to see if a robot could effectively acquire appropriate independent behaviour from human demonstrations. In this case, the human demonstrations were coming from an adult, and the appropriate independent behaviour was assisting children to complete an educational game.

The lead author, post doctorate research associate at University of Wisconsin-Madison in the United States, Emmanuel Senft, says the findings from their research are twofold.

‘Not only did the robot learn to interact [in the classroom] autonomously,' he tells Teacher , ‘but it could do so in a way that was helping the children.'

Using robots to improve student learning

A total of 75 children between the ages of eight and 10-years-old attending schools in Plymouth in the United Kingdom were involved in this study. They were given an educational game developed by the researchers to complete on a touch screen device. When the students were playing the game, a robot was present.

Senft says the SPARC approach has two goals: allowing people with limited technical expertise to teach a robot to interact, and enabling this teaching and learning relationship to occur in a real environment.

Three conditions for the robot behaviour were compared to assess the SPARC approach. The first condition was the passive condition where the robot was not doing anything during the game. The next is the supervised condition where a psychology student taught the robot to interact; and an autonomous condition where the robot was re-enacting the policy it learned from the psychology student teaching it.

The role of the robot in the supervised and autonomous conditions was to guide the children through completing the game by providing them advice on what steps to take. They also gave social prompts (for example, words of encouragement) to the student. Robots were able to assist the children because they had been exposed to human demonstrations – which, in this case, was a psychology student (as this person would provide an unbiased perspective).

‘We showed that compared to a passive robot, a supervised robot could help children to perform better at the game (with improvements up to 10 or 30 per cent depending on the metrics) and that a robot could replicate this effect autonomously,' Senft explains. These findings also mean that the robot managed to successfully learn from the human who taught it – from the actions it needed to execute, to when it was appropriate to execute them.

Because of this result, Senft says, ‘in the context of education, SPARC would allow teachers to create robots' policy tailored to their specific needs'.

Relieving teacher workload

Looking further ahead, Senft says that a major implication for educators could be a change of classroom dynamics from one teacher and 20 children to one teacher, six robots and 20 children.

‘When faced with a suggestion from the robot, the human supervisor (or teacher) can either let the action be executed after a short delay, if correct, or can cancel it and select another one instead if the suggestion is incorrect,' he explains. ‘Overall, the robot is learning from this feedback, and can progressively build an autonomous behaviour. As the robot's learned behaviour improves, the requirement for the human supervisor to correct the robot decreases as well as their workload.'

It's this classroom dynamic that would allow more time for one-to-one teaching from human educators, as robots could supplement the teacher to offer additional individualised support when appropriate.

‘There is no desire to remove teachers from the classroom,' Senft says. ‘…But adding these robots could help teachers to focus on what matters the most.'

Emmanuel Senft says a possible implication of these research findings is a change to classroom dynamics.

As a school leader, consider the classroom dynamic of one teacher, six robots and 20 children. What would be some possible positive and negative implications for staff, students and parents/carers?

A household robot can learn how to do almost any chore in about 20 minutes when taught by a human using an iPhone camera and a litter picker.

Robots tend to perform well only on specific tasks that they have been trained for, like sorting rubbish or picking up laundry , and can quickly run into difficulty when encountering a task in unfamiliar environments, such as in homes.

Now, Mahi Shafiullah at New York University and his colleagues have created a way to teach robots that involves a litter grabber equipped with an iPhone, a system called the Stick.

Sometimes mowing the lawn when it's scorching hot outside is an activity best avoided, and that's where this home robot comes in. Able to cover 0.4 acres and cut grass that's up to 3.6" tall, this robotic mower is perfect for small to mid-sized gardens and yards. But if you have a larger backyard, you can always opt for the feature-rich and smart home-friendly Husqvarna Automower 430X . In our tests, Chief Technologist and Head Engineer, Rachel Rothman , found that this robot lawnmower, which hails from a reliable brand, worked very well and is a worthy investment.

To get started with the automower, you'll need to install guide and boundary wires, but then you're free to sit back and relax. When it comes to battery life, this lawnmower is a lot like a robot vacuum and will head back to its recharging station when it needs more juice. Rothman says, "the app is surprisingly intuitive and easy once all set up, but it does mean that the mower is running for far longer than a traditional lawnmower would have to."

Want a dog but can't handle all that fur or a rigorous walking schedule? Enter aibo, the robotic pup that doesn't shed and certainly doesn't need to go out for walks (but you can still train it to do tricks, go potty and eat virtual food)! Though it's not a replacement for a real pet, aibo has a wide range of sensors built in to help respond and react accordingly to humans, though it does require a cloud plan to store data, grow and evolve. "Its expressions were impressively life-like. Though aibo doesn't look like a real pet by any means, we were impressed with the detail and natural movements," says Rothman.

Though our engineers haven't tested this tool out yet in the Lab, suction technology is used to stick the robot to your windows and you can then manually control it through an app to get even the hardest to reach corners. The microfiber pads, which scrub the windows gently, are washable for future use.

If you think of the jobs robots could never do, you would probably put doctors and teachers at the top of the list. It's easy to imagine robot cleaners and factory workers, but some jobs need human connection and creativity. But are we underestimating what robots can do? In some cases, they already perform better than doctors at diagnosing illness. Also, some patients might feel more comfortable sharing personal information with a machine than a person. Could there be a place for robots in education after all?

British education expert Anthony Seldon thinks so. And he even has a date for the robot takeover of the classroom: 2027. He predicts robots will do the main job of transferring information and teachers will be like assistants. Intelligent robots will read students' faces, movements and maybe even brain signals. Then they will adapt the information to each student. It's not a popular opinion and it's unlikely robots will ever have empathy and the ability to really connect with humans like another human can.

One thing is certain, though. A robot teacher is better than no teacher at all. In some parts of the world, there aren't enough teachers and 9–16 per cent of children under the age of 14 don't go to school. That problem could be partly solved by robots because they can teach anywhere and won't get stressed, or tired, or move somewhere for an easier, higher-paid job.

Those negative aspects of teaching are something everyone agrees on. Teachers all over the world are leaving because it is a difficult job and they feel overworked. Perhaps the question is not 'Will robots replace teachers?' but 'How can robots help teachers?' Office workers can use software to do things like organise and answer emails, arrange meetings and update calendars. Teachers waste a lot of time doing non-teaching work, including more than 11 hours a week marking homework. If robots could cut the time teachers spend marking homework and writing reports, teachers would have more time and energy for the parts of the job humans do best.

I think I would like to have teachers more than robots because robots don't understand emotions and feelings

Having a robot as a teacher it may have some pros and contras.One benefit is that the classes would be arranged in a better organized system and they couldn't have problems with the topics. But one of the biggest weakness is the lack of human perception that a machine has, it's impossible to replace a professor with a machine because a machine would have never had the same connection with a student. A professor is an equal human beign who has passed by the same problems in the education system as a common student and the most important aspect is that the teacher will teach you with passion and their experience in life.

I am totally sure that robots instead of teachers is a bad idea. Robots can assist with self-learning but on the classes they cannot replace the empathy of teachers. In this case the individual approach to the student is lost.

From wiping up spills to serving up food, robots are being taught to carry out increasingly complicated household tasks. Many such home-bot trainees are learning through imitation; they are programmed to copy the motions that a human physically guides them through.

It turns out that robots are excellent mimics. But unless engineers also program them to adjust to every possible bump and nudge, robots don’t necessarily know how to handle these situations, short of starting their task from the top.

Now MIT engineers are aiming to give robots a bit of common sense when faced with situations that push them off their trained path. They’ve developed a method that connects robot motion data with the “common sense knowledge” of large language models, or LLMs.

Their approach enables a robot to logically parse many given household task into subtasks, and to physically adjust to disruptions within a subtask so that the robot can move on without having to go back and start a task from scratch — and without engineers having to explicitly program fixes for every possible failure along the way.   

“Imitation learning is a mainstream approach enabling household robots. But if a robot is blindly mimicking a human’s motion trajectories, tiny errors can accumulate and eventually derail the rest of the execution,” says Yanwei Wang, a graduate student in MIT’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS). “With our method, a robot can self-correct execution errors and improve overall task success.”

Wang and his colleagues detail their new approach in a study they will present at the International Conference on Learning Representations (ICLR) in May. The study’s co-authors include EECS graduate students Tsun-Hsuan Wang and Jiayuan Mao, Michael Hagenow, a postdoc in MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AeroAstro), and Julie Shah, the H.N. Slater Professor in Aeronautics and Astronautics at MIT.

Language task

The researchers illustrate their new approach with a simple chore: scooping marbles from one bowl and pouring them into another. To accomplish this task, engineers would typically move a robot through the motions of scooping and pouring — all in one fluid trajectory. They might do this multiple times, to give the robot a number of human demonstrations to mimic.

“But the human demonstration is one long, continuous trajectory,” Wang says.

The team realized that, while a human might demonstrate a single task in one go, that task depends on a sequence of subtasks, or trajectories. For instance, the robot has to first reach into a bowl before it can scoop, and it must scoop up marbles before moving to the empty bowl, and so forth. If a robot is pushed or nudged to make a mistake during any of these subtasks, its only recourse is to stop and start from the beginning, unless engineers were to explicitly label each subtask and program or collect new demonstrations for the robot to recover from the said failure, to enable a robot to self-correct in the moment.

“That level of planning is very tedious,” Wang says.

Instead, he and his colleagues found some of this work could be done automatically by LLMs. These deep learning models process immense libraries of text, which they use to establish connections between words, sentences, and paragraphs. Through these connections, an LLM can then generate new sentences based on what it has learned about the kind of word that is likely to follow the last.

For their part, the researchers found that in addition to sentences and paragraphs, an LLM can be prompted to produce a logical list of subtasks that would be involved in a given task. For instance, if queried to list the actions involved in scooping marbles from one bowl into another, an LLM might produce a sequence of verbs such as “reach,” “scoop,” “transport,” and “pour.”

“LLMs have a way to tell you how to do each step of a task, in natural language. A human’s continuous demonstration is the embodiment of those steps, in physical space,” Wang says. “And we wanted to connect the two, so that a robot would automatically know what stage it is in a task, and be able to replan and recover on its own.”

Mapping marbles

For their new approach, the team developed an algorithm to automatically connect an LLM’s natural language label for a particular subtask with a robot’s position in physical space or an image that encodes the robot state. Mapping a robot’s physical coordinates, or an image of the robot state, to a natural language label is known as “grounding.” The team’s new algorithm is designed to learn a grounding “classifier,” meaning that it learns to automatically identify what semantic subtask a robot is in — for example, “reach” versus “scoop” — given its physical coordinates or an image view.

“The grounding classifier facilitates this dialogue between what the robot is doing in the physical space and what the LLM knows about the subtasks, and the constraints you have to pay attention to within each subtask,” Wang explains.

The team demonstrated the approach in experiments with a robotic arm that they trained on a marble-scooping task. Experimenters trained the robot by physically guiding it through the task of first reaching into a bowl, scooping up marbles, transporting them over an empty bowl, and pouring them in. After a few demonstrations, the team then used a pretrained LLM and asked the model to list the steps involved in scooping marbles from one bowl to another. The researchers then used their new algorithm to connect the LLM’s defined subtasks with the robot’s motion trajectory data. The algorithm automatically learned to map the robot’s physical coordinates in the trajectories and the corresponding image view to a given subtask.

The team then let the robot carry out the scooping task on its own, using the newly learned grounding classifiers. As the robot moved through the steps of the task, the experimenters pushed and nudged the bot off its path, and knocked marbles off its spoon at various points. Rather than stop and start from the beginning again, or continue blindly with no marbles on its spoon, the bot was able to self-correct, and completed each subtask before moving on to the next. (For instance, it would make sure that it successfully scooped marbles before transporting them to the empty bowl.)

“With our method, when the robot is making mistakes, we don’t need to ask humans to program or give extra demonstrations of how to recover from failures,” Wang says. “That’s super exciting because there’s a huge effort now toward training household robots with data collected on teleoperation systems. Our algorithm can now convert that training data into robust robot behavior that can do complex tasks, despite external perturbations.”
