Captain Vikram Batra in Hindi – आपने हाल ही में आई फ़िल्म शेरशाह तो देखी होगी यह मूवी शहीद कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा की जीवनी पर आधारित है। कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा कारगिल युद्ध में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई थी। भारत माता के लिए आ‍खरी सांसों तक लड़ने वाले कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा को मरणोपरांत भारत सरकार द्वारा सर्वोच्च और सबसे प्रतिष्ठित पुरस्कार परमवीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया।

जब पाकिस्‍तान ने धोखे से 1999 में कारगिल के कई चोटियों पर कब्‍जा कर लिया था, भारतीय सेना ने उन चोटियों को कब्‍जा मुक्‍त कराने के लिए आपरेशन विजय शुरू किया, इस युद्ध में कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ने सबसे महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई। आइये जाने कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा के जीवन के बारे में।

जन्‍म, परिवार और शिक्षा – Captain Vikram Batra  Biography in Hindi

कैप्‍टन विक्रम बत्रा का जन्‍म 9 सितंबर 1974 को हिमाचल प्रदेश के पालमपुर जिले के घुग्‍गर में हुआ था। उनके पिता का नाम जीएम बत्रा और माता का नाम कमलकांता बत्रा है। उनके पिता गिरधारी लाल बत्रा एक सरकारी स्कूल के प्रिंसिपल थे, जबकि उनकी माँ एक स्कूल टीचर थीं। कैप्‍टन के तीन भाई बहिन और थे, जिसमे 2 बहिन और एक भाई था। विक्रम का पहले डीएवी स्कूल, फिर सेंट्रल स्कूल पालमपुर में दाखिल करवाया गया। सेना छावनी में स्कूल होने से सेना के अनुशासन को देख और पिता से देश प्रेम की कहानियां सुनने पर विक्रम में स्कूल के समय से ही देश प्रेम प्रबल हो उठा। स्कूल में विक्रम शिक्षा के क्षेत्र में ही अव्वल नहीं थे, बल्कि टेबल टेनिस में अव्वल दर्जे के खिलाड़ी होने के साथ उनमें सांस्कृतिक कार्यक्रमों में बढ़-चढ़कर भाग लेने का भी जज़्बा था।

बारवीं की पढ़ाई करने के बाद विक्रम चंडीगढ़ चले गए और डीएवी कॉलेज, चंडीगढ़ में विज्ञान विषय में स्नातक की पढ़ाई शुरू कर दी। इस दौरान वह एनसीसी के सर्वश्रेष्ठ कैडेट चुने गए और उन्होंने गणतंत्र दिवस की परेड में भी भाग लिया। उन्होंने सेना में जाने का पूरा मन बना लिया और सीडीएस (संयुक्त रक्षा सेवा परीक्षा) की भी तैयारी शुरू कर दी। हालांकि विक्रम को इस दौरान हांगकांग में मर्चेन्ट नेवी में भी नौकरी मिल रही थी जिसे इन्होने ठुकरा दिया गया।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा कराटे में ग्रीन बेल्ट थे और मनाली में राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर खेल में भाग लिया था। कप्तान विक्रम बत्रा को अपनी एनसीसी एयर विंग इकाई के साथ पिंजौर एयरफील्ड और फ्लाइंग क्लब में 40 दिनों के प्रशिक्षण के लिए चुना गया था। कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ने ‘C’ सर्टिफिकेट के लिए क्वालिफाई किया और NCC में कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा का रैंक दिया गया।

इस दौरान स्नातक की पढ़ाई पूरी करने के बाद, उन्होंने अंग्रेजी में एमए करने के लिए पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय, चंडीगढ़ में दाखिला लिया। उन्होंने कंबाइंड डिफेंस सर्विसेज (CDS) परीक्षा की तैयारी के लिए विषय को चुना। उन्होंने शाम की कक्षाएं लीं और दिन के दौरान चंडीगढ़ में एक ट्रैवल एजेंसी के शाखा प्रबंधक के रूप में काम किया।

1996 में उन्होंने CDS परीक्षा दी और इलाहाबाद में सेवा चयन बोर्ड (SSB) द्वारा चयन हुआ। वह चयनित होने वाले शीर्ष 35 उम्मीदवारों में से एक थे। भारतीय सैन्य अकादमी (IMA) में शामिल होने के लिए उन्होंने अपने कॉलेज से ड्राप आउट किया।

आर्मी कैरियर – Captain Vikram Batra Career in Hindi

साल 1996 विक्रम बत्रा ने मानेकशॉ बटालियन (IMA) में दाखिला ले लिया। साल 1997 में विक्रम ने मानेकशॉ बटालियन (IMA) से अपनी 19 महीने की ट्रेनिंग को पूरा किया और उसके बाद उन्होंने IMA से ग्रेजुएशन पूरा किया।

विक्रम की ट्रेनिंग पूरी होने के बाद उनको13वीं बटालियन, जम्मू और कश्मीर राइफल्स में लेफ्टिनेंट के तौर पर चुना गया। 13वीं बटालियन में नियुक्ति के बाद उन्हें 30 दिन की ट्रेनिंग के लिए जबलपुर और मध्य प्रदेश जाना पड़ा।

उन्होंने 1999 में कमांडो ट्रेनिंग के साथ कई प्रशिक्षण भी लिए। पहली जून 1999 को उनकी टुकड़ी को कारगिल युद्ध में भेजा गया। हम्प व राकी नाब स्थानों को जीतने के बाद विक्रम को कैप्टन बना दिया गया।

कारगिल युद्ध के दौरान अपनी शहादत से पहले, होली के त्यौहार के दौरान सेना से छुट्टी पर अपने घर आए, यहां अपने सबसे अच्छे दोस्त और मंगेतर डिंपल चीमा से मिले, इस दौरान युद्ध पर भी चर्चा हुई, जिस पर कैप्‍टन ने कहा कि मैं या तो लहराते तिरंगे को लहरा कर आऊंगा या फिर तिरंगे में लिपटा हुआ, पर मैं आऊंगा जरूर।

जून 1999 को उनकी टुकड़ी को कारगिल युद्ध में भेजा गया था। हम्प व राकी नाब स्थानों को जीतने के बाद श्रीनगर-लेह मार्ग के ठीक ऊपर सबसे महत्त्वपूर्ण 5140 चोटी को पाक सेना से मुक्त करवाने की ज़िम्मेदारी कैप्टन बत्रा की टुकड़ी को मिली। कैप्टन बत्रा अपनी कंपनी के साथ घूमकर पूर्व दिशा की ओर से इस क्षेत्र की तरफ बढ़े और बिना शत्रु को भनक लगे हुए नजदीक पहुंच गए। कैप्टेन बत्रा अपने साथियों के साथ दुश्मन के ठिकानों पर सीधे आक्रमण कर दिया। सबसे आगे रहकर दस्ते का नेतृत्व करते हुए उन्होनें बड़ी निडरता से शत्रु पर धावा बोल दिया और आमने-सामने की लड़ाई में चार दुश्‍मनों को मार डाला।

बेहद दुर्गम क्षेत्र होने के बावजूद विक्रम बत्रा ने अपने साथियों के साथ 20 जून 1999 को सुबह तीन बजकर 30 मिनट पर इस चोटी को अपने कब्ज़े में ले लिया। कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ने जब इस चोटी से रेडियो के जरिए अपना विजय के बारे में बताया तो सेना ही नहीं बल्कि पूरे भारत में उनका नाम छा गया। इसी दौरान विक्रम के कोड नाम शेरशाह के साथ ही उन्हें कारगिल का शेर की भी उपाधि दी गई। अगले दिन चोटी 5140 में भारतीय झंडे के साथ विक्रम बत्रा और उनकी टीम का फोटो मीडिया में आ गयी।

इसके बाद भारतीय सेना ने 7 जुलाई 1999 को, प्वाइंट 4875 चोटी को कब्ज़े में लेने के लिए अभियान शुरू किया। इसके लिए भी कैप्टन विक्रम और उनकी टुकड़ी को जिम्मेदारी सौंपी गई। यह बहुत मुश्किल जगह थी जहां दोनों और खड़ी ढलान थी और उसी एकमात्र रास्ते पर दुश्‍मनों ने नाकाबंदी कर रखी थी। इस अभियान को पूरा करने के लिए कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा एक संर्कीण पठार के पास से दुश्‍मन ठिकानों पर आक्रमण करने का निर्णय लिया। युद्ध के दौरान आमने-सामने की भीषण लड़ाई में कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ने पांच दुश्‍मन सैनिकों को पॉइंट ब्लैक रेंज में मार गिराया। इस दौरान वे दुश्‍मन स्‍नाइपर के निशाने पर आ गए और गंभीर रूप से जख्‍मी हो गए। इसके बाद भी वे रेंगते हुए दुश्‍मनों पर ग्रेनेड फेंक कर मौत के घाट उतार दिया। उन्होंने सबसे आगे रहकर लगभग एक असंभव कार्य को पूरा कर दिखाया। अपने जान की परवाह भी नहीं की और इस अभियान को दुश्‍मनों की भारी गोलीबारी में भी पूरा किया, लेकिन बुरी तरह घायल होने के कारण कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा शहीद हो गए।

कारगिल के युद्ध के दौरान ही कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा के साथी नवीन बम फटने से बुरी तरह घायल हो गए थे। विक्रम बत्रा ने तुरंत उन्हें वहां से हटाते हुए उनकी जान बचाई। 7 जुलाई 1999 को अपने अन्य साथी की जान बचाते हुए कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा शहीद हो गए। कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ने शहीद होने से पहले अपने साथी को कहा था कि, ‘‘तुम हट जाओ. तुम्हारे बीवी-बच्चे हैं’।

विक्रम बत्रा और डिंपल चीमा की लव स्टोरी – Vikram Batra Story in Hindi Love Story

विक्रम बत्रा और डिंपल चीमा की पहली बार साल 1995 में पंजाब यूनिवर्सिटी में मुलाकात हुई थी। यही से दोनों के बीच मुलाकातों का सिलसिला शुरू हो गया और दोनों एक-दूसरे को दिल दे बैठे।  इसके बाद साल 1996 में विक्रम सेना में चले गए। लेकिन 1999 में राष्ट्र के लिए लड़ते हुए विक्रम बत्रा शहीद हो गए। इसके बाद डिंपल ने कभी शादी नहीं की और विक्रम बत्रा की विधवा बनकर जीने का फैसला किया।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा के शहीद होने के बाद उनकी प्रेमिका आज भी वि‍क्रम के प्‍यार के सहारे जिंदा है। डिंपल ने एक इंटरव्यू के दौरान बताया था कि, ‘एक मुलाकात में जब मैंने विक्रम बत्रा से शादी के बारे में बात की तो उन्होंने बिना कुछ कहे अपने जेब से ब्लेड निकाली और अपने अंगूठे पर चलाई। इसके बाद खून से मेरी मांग भर दी थी’। इस पर बात करते हुए उन्होंने कहा, ‘पिछले 17 सालों में एक भी दिन ऐसा नहीं हुआ जब मैंने खुद को उससे अलग महसूस किया हो। ऐसा लगता है कि वह किसी पोस्टिंग पर दूर हैं। मैं अपने दिल में जानती हूं कि हम फिर से मिलने जा रहे हैं, बस समय की बात है।

इस अदम्य साहस और पराक्रम के लिए कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा को 15 अगस्त 1999 को भारत सरकार द्वारा मरणोपरांत परमवीर चक्र से सम्मानित किया गया जो 7 जुलाई 1999 से प्रभावी हुआ। आज भले ही कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा हमारे बीच नहीं हैं, पर वे हमेशा के लिए अमर हैं।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा जन्म एवं परिवार (birth and family).

बहुत कम लोग होते हैं जो देश के लिए अपनी जान न्योछावर करने के लिए तैयार रहते हैं उन्हीं में से एक विक्रम बत्रा जिनका जन्म 9 सितंबर 1974 को हिमाचल प्रदेश के पालमपुर गांव में हुआ था। विक्रम बत्रा जिनके पिता सरकारी स्कूल के प्रिंसिपल के पद पर आसीन थे वहीं उनकी मां स्कूल टीचर थी।

गणतंत्र दिवस की परेड में जब उन्होंने 1994 में एनसीसी कैडेट के रूप में भाग लिया तब देश के प्रति देशभक्ति ने उनके दिल में जन्म लिया और भारतीय सेना में शामिल होने की इच्छा के बारे में उन्होंने अपने माता-पिता को बताया। जिनके चलते 1995 में अपने कॉलेज के दिनों के दौरान उन्हें हांगकांग के मुख्यालय वाली शिपिंग कंपनी ने मर्चेंट नेवी के रूप में चुन लिया परंतु उनका इरादा कुछ और था।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ट्रेनिंग (Training)

अपने कॉलेज की पढ़ाई के दौरान एमए करने के लिए उन्होंने पंजाब विश्वविद्यालय जो चंडीगढ़ में मौजूद है उसमें एडमिशन लिया और कंबाइंड डिफेंस सर्विसेज की परीक्षा की तैयारी में जुट गए। पढ़ाई के साथ-साथ उन्होंने पार्ट टाइम जॉब के रूप में ट्रैवल एजेंसी ज्वाइन की जहां पर ब्रांच मैनेजर के रूप में उन्होंने काम किया। CDS की परीक्षा उन्होंने 1996 में दी जिसके बाद इलाहाबाद के सेवा चयन बोर्ड में उनका चयन हो गया। वहां पर कोई 35 उम्मीदवारों का चुनाव हुआ था जिनमें से 1 नाम विक्रम बत्रा भी था। भारत के प्रति देशभक्ति इतनी अधिक बढ़ गई थी कि उन्होंने कॉलेज छोड़कर भारतीय सैन्य अकादमी ज्वाइन करना सही समझा।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा करियर (Career)

मानेकशॉ बटालियन IMA मैं सन 1996 में कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा शामिल हो गए। उसके बाद सन 1997 के 6 दिसंबर को उन्होंने अपने 19 महीने की ट्रेनिंग पूरी कर ली जिसके बाद IMA से स्नातक की डिग्री प्राप्त की। उनका प्रशिक्षण पूरा हो गया उसके बाद जम्मू और कश्मीर राइफल्स ने लेफ्टिनेंट के रूप में 13वीं बटालियन के साथ उन्हें नियुक्त किया गया। उन्हें फिर से 1 महीने के लिए प्रशिक्षण के दौरान जबलपुर, मध्यप्रदेश भेजा गया।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा पोस्टिंग (Posting)

उनका प्रशिक्षण पूरा होने के बाद जिस क्षेत्र में आतंकवादी गतिविधि बहुत ज्यादा थी बारामूला जिले, जम्मू और कश्मीर के सोपोर में उन्हें भेज दिया गया। उसके बाद उनका प्रशिक्षण यहीं नहीं रुका उन्हें यंग ऑफिसर कोर्स पूरा करने के लिए 5 महीने की अवधि के लिए इन्फेंट्री स्कूल Mhow भेज दिया गया। जब उनका कोर्स पूरा हो गया तब अल्फा ग्रेडिंग से सम्मानित कर वापस से जम्मू बटालियन ने देश की सेवा के लिए भेज दिया गया।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा मंगेतर, गर्लफ्रेंड (Fiance, Girlfriend, Dimple Cheema)

कारगिल युद्ध से पहले होली की छुट्टियों के दौरान वे अपने घर गए थे उस समय अपनी मंगेतर डिंपल चीमा से अपने फेवरेट कैफे में मिले। उस समय डिंपल को विक्रम की बहुत ज्यादा चिंता हो रही थी तो उन्होंने विक्रम को कारगिल युद्ध के दौरान अपना ध्यान रखने के लिए कहा। उस वीर के मुंह से बस यही निकला कि या तो मैं अपनी जीत का तिरंगा लहराता हुआ आऊंगा या फिर उस तिरंगे में अपनी आंख मूंदे लिपट कर आऊंगा।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा कारगिल युद्ध में योगदान (Kargil Story)

उनकी वीरता कुछ ऐसी थी जिन्होंने 1999 के कारगिल युद्ध में अपनी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका अदा की। अपनी छुट्टियां पूरी कर जब वे वापस सोपोर अपनी बटालियन ज्वाइन करने आए तब उनकी बटालियन को शाहजहांपुर उत्तर प्रदेश की तरफ जाने के लिए कहा गया। विक्रम बत्रा ने अपनी बटालियन 8 माउंटेन डिवीजन के 192 माउंटेन ब्रिगेड के तहत आतंकवादियों का सफाया करने का कार्यकाल जम्मू में पूरा कर लिया था। इसलिए उन्हें और उनकी बटालियन को वहां से निकलने का आदेश दे दिया गया।

पाक सेना ने भारतीय सेना के खिलाफ सेक्टर में मजबूत किलेबंदी कर रखी थी जिसमें स्वचालित हथियार प्रबलित है। इस युद्ध के दौरान 20 जून 1999 को कमांडर डेल्टा कंपनी के कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा को प्वाइंट 5140 पर ऑपरेशन VIJAY के दौरान हमला करने की जिम्मेदारी सौंपी गई। पूर्व दिशा से अपनी पूरी कंपनी के साथ कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ने शत्रु को बिना भनक लगे ही उन पर हमला कर दिया और उनके क्षेत्र के अंदर घुस गए। अपने दस्ते को पुनर्गठित करके वह दुश्मन के ठिकानों पर हमला करने के लिए पहुंच गए।

उस समय कैप्टन विक्रम अपने दस्ते का नेतृत्व कर रहे थे और सबसे आगे बड़ी निडरता के साथ शत्रु के क्षेत्र में पहुंचकर उन पर हमला करते चले गए। हमले के दौरान उन्होंने 4 छात्रों को मार गिराया। जिस क्षेत्र में शत्रु थे वह क्षेत्र बेहद दुर्गम होने के बावजूद भी उन्होंने शत्रुओं का नाश कर उनके रेडियो स्टेशन पर जाकर अपनी विजय का उद्घोष कर दिया।

कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा की बहादुरी के बाद 7 जुलाई 1999 को पॉइंट 4875 की छोटी को कब्जे में लेने का अभियान शुरू किया गया और यह अभियान भी विक्रम और उनकी टुकड़ी को पूरा करने के लिए सौंपा गया। इस अभियान को बुरा करने वाला रास्ता भी बड़ा दुर्गम था क्योंकि वहां पर दोनों तरफ खड़ी ढलान थी और एकमात्र रास्ता था जहां पर शत्रुओं ने पूरी तरह से नाकाबंदी कर रखी थी। इसके बावजूद भी संकरे रास्ते से होते हुए कैप्टन अपने पूरे जोश और दस्ते को लेकर शत्रु के ठिकाने पर पहुंचकर आक्रमण का निर्णय लिया। उस आक्रमण के दौरान पॉइंट ब्लैक रेंज में पांच शत्रुओं को विक्रम बत्रा और उनकी टीम ने मार गिराया।

कारगिल युद्ध के दौरान विक्रम बत्रा को काफी गहरे जख्म आए थे उसके बावजूद भी उन्होंने हार नहीं मानी और रेंगते हुए शत्रु के ऊपर बड़े ग्रेनेड फेंक दिए। विक्रम बत्रा द्वारा फेंके गए ग्रेनेड की वजह से शत्रुओं का पूरा इलाका नष्ट हो गया था और सभी शत्रु मारे गए थे। अपने गहरे जख्मों के बाद भी विक्रम ने हार नहीं मानी और अपनी सेना की टुकड़ी को आगे बढ़कर शत्रुओं पर प्रहार करने की प्रेरणा दी लेकिन अपने गहरे जख्मों की वजह से और भारी गोलीबारी की वजह से उन्होंने युद्ध क्षेत्र में उसी स्थान पर अपने प्राण त्याग दिए। इस तरह वे वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए परंतु अपनी आखिरी सांस तक देश के लिए लड़ते रहे।

साल 2013 में आपने एलओसी कारगिल फिल्म देखी होगी जो पूरी तरह कारगिल संघर्ष पर आधारित थी। इस फिल्म को बॉलीवुड की तरफ से रिलीज किया गया जिसमें अभिषेक बच्चन द्वारा विक्रम बत्रा के महत्वपूर्ण किरदार की अहम भूमिका निभाई गई थी।

अद्भुत शोर्यता के परिचायक कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा (vikram batra story) भारतीय सेना में कैप्टन रैंक के अधिकारी थे. उन्होंने वर्ष 1999 में हुए भारत पाकिस्तान युद्ध (कारगिल युद्ध) में अहम भूमिका निभाई थी. इस कारण उन्हें मरणोपरांत सेना का सर्वोच्च पुरस्कार परमवीर चक्र दिया गया था. कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा का उपनाम ‘शेरशाह’ और ‘कारगिल का शेर’ भी कहा जाता है. पाकिस्तानी सेना में इनके प्रति इतना खौफ था कि, इनका कोड नेम भी ‘शेरशाह’ रखा था.

प्रारंभिक जीवन और परिवार

विक्रम बत्रा का जन्म 9 सितंबर 1974 को हिमाचल प्रदेश के एक छोटे से शहर रामपुर में हुआ था. विक्रम बत्रा के पिता का नाम गिरधारी लाल बत्रा तथा माता का नाम कमल कांत बत्रा है. इनके पिता सरकारी स्कूल में प्रधानाचार्य थे. तथा माता भी एक अध्यापिका थी. विक्रम का जन्म जुड़वा बच्चो के रूप में हुआ था.

वे अपने छोटे भाई विशाल बत्रा से 15 मिनट पहले जन्मे थे. उनकी माता ने दोनों को लव और कुश नाम दिया था. क्योंकि उनकी माता रामायण और भगवान राम की भक्ति किया करती थी. विक्रम बत्रा के दो बहने भी हैं. इनके बहनों का नाम सीमा और नूतन (नितू) है.

विक्रम बत्रा की शिक्षा दीक्षा

विक्रम बत्रा एवं उनके भाई ने अपनी प्रारंभिक शिक्षा पालमपुर के स्थानीय विद्यालय डीएवी पब्लिक स्कूल से की थी. इसके बाद उन्होंने पालमपुर के सेंट्रल स्कूल से सीनियर सेकेंडरी की पढ़ाई पूरी की. विक्रम बत्रा पढ़ाई में तो होनहार थे ही साथ ही स्पोर्ट्स में भी अच्छे थे. उन्होंने राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर ‘युवा संसदीय प्रतिस्पर्धा’ में अपने स्कूल का प्रतिनिधित्व किया था. इन्हें स्पोर्ट्स में काफी रुचि थी.

वे टेबल टेनिस, कराटे जैसे खेलों में अधिक भाग लिया करते थे. karate, tabel tennis में इन्होंने राष्ट्रीय स्तर पर शानदार प्रदर्शन किया था. सीनियर सेकेंडरी की पढ़ाई के बाद. उन्होंने D.A.V. कॉलेज, चंडीगढ़ से Bsc. मेडिकल साइंस में अध्ययन शुरू किया. कॉलेज के प्रथम वर्ष में इन्होने ने एनसीसी (NCC) में एयर विंग ज्वाइन किया. एनसीसी में रहते हुए उन्होंने कई के कैम्प किए. इसके अलावा उन्हें कॉलेज में ‘युवा सेवा संघ’ का अध्यक्ष भी बनाया गया था.

कोलेज के दौरान वे काफी एक्टिव रहते थे. वर्ष 1994 में उन्हें एनसीसी कैडेट के रूप में गणतंत्र दिवस की परेड में शामिल होने का मौका मिला था. यहीं से उन्हें इंडियन आर्मी में जाने की इच्छा हुई. विक्रम बत्रा के नाना भी भारतीय सेना में एक सैनिक रह चुके थे. कॉलेज के दौरान ही साल 1995 में उनका चयन मर्चेंट नेवी में हो गया था. लेकिन उनका लक्ष्य कुछ और था. उन्होंने अपनी मां से कहा था.

विक्रम बत्रा का सैन्य करियर (1997-1999)

वर्ष 1996 में विक्रम बत्रा ने कंबाइंड डिफेंस सर्विस (CDS) की प्रवेश परीक्षा पास की. इसके बाद उन्हें एसएसबी (SSB) के इंटरव्यू के लिए इलाहाबाद बुलाया गया. जहा उनका सेना में चयन हो गया. और ट्रेनिंग के लिए आईएमए (इंडियन मिलिट्री एकेडमी), देहरादून ज्वाइन किया.

19 महीनों की कड़ी ट्रेनिंग के बाद 6 दिसंबर 1997 को उन्हें भारतीय सेना में लेफ्टिनेंट बनाया गया. विक्रम बत्रा को जम्मू-कश्मीर की 13 वी बटालियन में कमीशन किया गया था. सभी ट्रेनिंग पूरी करने के बाद विक्रम बत्रा की पहली पोस्टिंग (first पोस्टिंग) जम्मू कश्मीर के बारामुला जिले में सोपोर में हुई थी. सोपुर एक ऐसा एरिया था. जहां उपद्रवियों के दंगे होते रहते थे. यही नहीं ट्रेनिंग में उन्हें अल्फा ग्रेड दिया गया था.

सन 1998 में उन्होंने अपनी बटालियन को ज्वाइन किया. इस दौरान सोपोर में रहते हुए विक्रम बत्रा ने कई उपद्रवियों को समाप्त किया. जनवरी 1999 में उन्हें कमांडो ट्रेनिंग के लिए कर्नाटक के बेलगांम में भेजा गया था. विक्रम बत्रा जब कभी भी छुट्टियों में अपने घर पलमपुर आते थे. तब वे अपने पसंदीदा कैफे पर जाते थे. इस तरह विक्रम बत्रा ने अपने सैन्य करियर की शुरुआत एक लेफ्टिनेंट से की और बाद में ग्रुप कैप्टन भी बने थे.

6 जून 1999 को विक्रम बत्रा व उनकी बटालियन को पॉइंट 51401 (चोटी का नाम) को पाकिस्तान के कब्जे से छुड़ाने का भार सौंपा गया था. कैप्टन बत्रा और उनका स्क्वायड दुश्मन सैनिकों के इतना करीब पहुंच गया था. जहां से पाक सैनिको पर आसानी से हमला किया जा सकता था. विक्रम बत्रा स्वयं अपनी टीम में सबसे आगे रहते हुए लीड करते थे.

उन्होंने अपने टीम को हमला करने के लिए तैनात किया. और दुश्मन सैनिकों के सामने से हमला किया. इस क्रम में उन्होंने चार पाक सैनिकों को मार गिराया था. इस तरह 20 जून 1999 को प्वाइंट 5140 चोटी पर भारतीय सैनिकों का कब्जा हो गया. उस समय सुबह के 3:30 बजे थे.

यह घटना 7 जुलाई 1999 की है. विक्रम बत्रा और उनकी टीम को पॉइंट 4875 चोटी को पाकिस्तान के कब्जे से छुड़ाना था. पॉइंट 4875 एक एसी जगह थी जहा तीव्र ढलान वाली ऊंची पहाड़िया थी. वहा से दुश्मनों पर हमला करना बेहद कठिन था. उन्होंने पास के एक संकीर्ण पठार से हमला करने का प्लान बनाया. दुश्मनों के सामने से हमला करते हुए.

• कप्तान विक्रम बत्रा की लिगेसी (legacy) – पॉइंट 4875 जहा पर बत्रा जी शहीद हुए थे. अब उस चोटी को “batra top” के नाम से जाना जाता है.
• IMA में एक संयुक्त केडेट मेस को बत्रा के नाम पर रखा गया है.
• नई दिल्ली स्थित मुबारक चौक को अब vikram batra के नाम पर रखा गया है.
• SSB, इलाहाबाद में उनके नाम पर एक हॉल बनाया गया है.
• जबलपुर के आवासीय कॉलोनी का नाम vikram batra के नाम पर रखा गया है.

विक्रम बत्रा जून 1996 में मानेकशॉ बटालियन में भारतीय सैन्य अकादमी (IMA) देहरादून में शामिल हुए थे । अपने प्रशिक्षण के बाद उन्होंने 6 दिसंबर 1997 को IMA से पास आउट किया था। जनवरी 1998 में उन्हें भारतीय सेना में लेफ्टिनेंट के रूप में कमीशन दिया गया था। जम्मू कश्मीर के सोपोर में जम्मू-कश्मीर राइफल्स (13 JAK Rif) की 13वीं बटालियन में तैनात थे। पदस्थापन से पूर्व उन्हें रेजिमेंटल प्रशिक्षण के लिए जबलपुर भेजा गया था।

मार्च 1998 में उन्हें युवा अधिकारी पाठ्यक्रम के लिए मध्य प्रदेश के महू में इन्फैंट्री स्कूल भेजा गया था। जिसमें उन्हें अल्फा ग्रेड से सम्मानित किया गया। उसके बाद उच्च उग्रवादी गतिविधि वाले क्षेत्र में तैनात किया गया था। उन्होंने कई ऑपरेशन और मुठभेड़ों का नेतृत्व किया था। एक बार एक घात में एक आतंकवादी द्वारा चलाई गई एक गोली उनके कंधों को छूती हुई निकल गई थी।

उसमे एक सैनिक की मौत हो गई थी। अपनी टीम के सिपाही की मौत का बदला लेने उग्रवादियों को पकड़ने का आदेश दिया था। जनवरी 1999 में, उन्हें कर्नाटक के बेलगाम में कमांडो कोर्स में भेजा गया था। वह दो महीने तक चला और पूरा होने पर उन्हें उच्चतम ग्रेड से सम्मानित किया गया था। 1999 में बत्रा होली खेलने घर गए थे। वह नेगल कैफे का दौरा किया करते थे।

उसके बाद उसकी यूनिट को उत्तर प्रदेश के शाहजानपुर जाने का आदेश मिला था। मगर वह आदेश बदल दिए गए और कारगिल जाने के लिए कहा गया था। वह बटालियन 13 जम्मू और कश्मीर राइफल्स (13 जक राइफल) को तोलोलिंग पर्वत पर कब्जा करने का आदेश दिया गया था। टोलोलिंग की सफलता के बाद उनकी बटालियन को प्वाइंट 5140 पर कब्जा करने का आदेश दिया गया था। उसमे तोपखाने की आग की आड़ में उन्होंने पहाड़ के पीछे की ओर से प्वाइंट 5140 पर चढ़ना शुरू कर दिया था।

उन्होंने एक खड़ी चढ़ाई चढ़ पाकिस्तानी सैनिकों को पर हमला कर दिया था। बत्रा ने हाथ में हाथ डाले 3 पाकिस्तानी सैनिकों को मार गिराया था। उन्होंने प्वाइंट 5140 पर कब्जा कर लिया और बहुत सारे गोला-बारूद और भारी बंदूकें बरामद कीं थी। बत्रा ने ये दिल मांगे मोरे (उनकी बटालियन की जीत का आह्वान) शब्द कहते हुए अपने कमांड पोस्ट से संपर्क किया था। कब्जा करने के बाद बत्रा को कप्तान के पद पर पदोन्नत किया गया था।

कारगिल युद्ध के समय विक्रम बत्रा को काफी गहरी चोटे आई थी। उसके पश्यात भी उन्होंने हार नहीं मानी थी और रेंगते हुए दुश्मनो के ऊपर बड़े ग्रेनेड फेंक दिए थे। विक्रम बत्रा ने फेंके ग्रेनेड से दुश्मनो का पूरा विस्तार ख़त्म हो गया था। एव सभी दुश्मन मारे गए थे। गहरे जख्म मिलने के बाद भी विक्रम जी ने अपनी बटालियन टुकड़ी को शत्रुओं पर प्रहार करने की प्रेरणा दी थी। कप्तान को मिले गहरे जख्मों और भारी गोलीबारी के कारन उन्होंने युद्ध क्षेत्र में ही अपने प्राण त्याग दिए थे। वह वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए तबतक यानि आखिरी सांस तक भारत देश के लिए लड़ते रहे थे।

विक्रम बत्रा का प्रारंभिक जीवन और परिवार – captain vikram batra family and early life.

भारत के खुबसुरत राज्य हिमाचल प्रदेश के पालमपुर जिले मे स्थित ‘घुघ्घर’ नाम के छोटे से गाव मे ७ सितम्बर १९७४ को विक्रम बत्रा का जन्म हुआ था। अपनी माता-पिता की विक्रम तिसरी संतान थे जिन्हे एक जुडवा भाई और दो बहने थी। इनके पिता का नाम गिरधारीलाल बत्रा है, तो वही इनके माता का नाम कमलकांता बत्रा है ।

विक्रम बत्रा के माता-पिता दोनो ही शिक्षा क्षेत्र से जुडे हुए थे, जिसमे इनके पिता सरकारी स्कूल मे प्रिन्सिपल पद पर कार्यरत थे तो माता स्कूल मे अध्यापिका थी। इसी वजह से घर मे शुरू से ही शिक्षा का माहौल था, पर विक्रम शुरू से ही जीवन मे कुछ अलग करने की भावना से प्रेरित था, जिसमे उन्हे उनके भाई विशाल बत्रा का हर बार सहयोग मिलता था।

माता- पिता के अलावा बात करे परिवार के अन्य सदस्यो की तो विक्रम को एक भाई और दो बहने है, जिसमे इनके भाई का नाम विशाल बत्रा है तथा बहनो के नाम सीमा और नूतन है। विक्रम बत्रा ने अपनी शुरुवाती पढाई पालमपूर से ही पुरी की थी, जहाँ आर्मी कैंटोनमेंट के अंतर्गत ही उनकी स्कूल थी जिसके वजह से बचपन से ही उनपर देश भक्ती कि भावना और सेना के अनुशासन का काफी ज्यादा प्रभाव हुआ था।

बचपन से ही विक्रम मेधावी छात्र थे जिनके भविष्य से लेकर काफी ज्यादा उम्मीदे और अरमान थे। इनकी प्राथमिक शिक्षा इनके माता के स्कूल मे पुरी हुई वही माध्यमिक शिक्षा पालमपूर के डी.ए.व्ही स्कूल से संपन्न हुई थी। उच्च शिक्षा हेतू विक्रम का दाखिला पालमपूर के सेन्ट्रल स्कूल मे कराया गया था, जो के आर्मी कैंटोनमेंट के अंतर्गत आता था।

यहाँ पढते हुए विक्रम ने, ना केवल शिक्षा ग्रहण की बल्की उस वातावरण ने उनके मन मे देश प्रेम की भावना को भी जन्म दिया जिसे उन्होने अंतिम साँस तक कायम रखा।

आर्मी के अनुशासन को करीब से मेहसूस करने का मौका विक्रम बत्रा को बहुत छोटे आयु मे मिला था, शायद यही वजह रही की मात्र २४ साल की आयु मे ये नौजवान भारत माता की सेवा मे सर्वोच्च बलिदान कर गया।

एक खुशहाल परिवार मे विक्रम का बचपन काफी हसते खेलते गुजरा था, पढाई के साथ साथ उन्हें कराटे, टेबल टेनिस खेलने का भी पसंद था। जिसमे इन खेलो से संबंधित स्कूल के विभिन्न प्रतियोगिता मे उन्होंने अपने भाई के साथ हिस्सा भी लिया था।

कराटे मे विक्रम को ग्रीन मेडल प्राप्त हुआ था वही ग्रेज्यूएशन के दौरान एन.सी.सी मे वे सबसे बेहतर कॅडेट के तौर पर भी चुने गए थे।

ग्रेज्यूएशन की पढाई की लिए उन्होने चंडीगढ के डी.ए.व्ही कॉलेज मे बी.एस.सी इन मेडिकल साइंस में दाखिला लिया था, जिसे उन्होने सफलता पूर्वक पुरा किया। तथा आगे की पढाई हेतू पंजाब युनिवर्सिटी के अंतर्गत एम.ए इन इंग्लिश के लिए प्रवेश प्राप्त किया था।

हालाकि एम.ए की पढाई को वे पुरा नही कर सके क्योंकी आगे उनका भारतीय सेना मे चयन हो गया था,जिस हेतू उन्हे ‘राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा अकादमी’ मे शामिल होना पडा था।

ग्रेज्यूएशन की पढाई करते समय विक्रम ने मर्चंट नेव्ही हेतू परीक्षा की तैयारी करना भी प्रारंभ किया था, जिस हेतू लिए गए परीक्षा को उन्होने सफलता पूर्वक उत्तीर्ण भी किया था।

अगले ही कुछ दिनो मे विक्रम को मर्चंट नेव्ही का नियुक्ती पत्र भी मिलने वाला था पर बीच मे ही उन्होने अपना फैसला बदल दिया और भारतीय थल सेना मे शामिल होने का मन बना लिया। हालाकि उनका ये फैसला परिवार के सद्स्यो को कुछ अटपटा सा भी प्रतीत हुआ था।

पर अपनी माता जी के पास विक्रम ने दिल खोलकर अपनी राय रखी की ‘उन्हे भारतीय थल सेना मे कार्य करना है मर्चंट नेव्ही मे नही’। इस सपने को साकार करने के लिए आगे विक्रम ने भारतीय थल सेना मे शामिल होने हेतू ‘कंबाइंड डिफेंस सर्विस परीक्षा’ की तैयारी शुरू की, जिसमे उन्हे सफलता भी प्राप्त हुई थी।

साल १९९६ को ‘राष्ट्रीय सुरक्षा अकादमी’ मे विक्रम का दाखिला तय हुआ जहाँ भारतीय सेना की तरफ से उन्हे प्रशिक्षण हेतू बुलाया गया था।

कडी ट्रेनिंग को पुरा करते हुए दिसंबर ६, १९९७ को विक्रम बत्रा ने भारतीय सेना मे लेफ्टनेंट पद पर नियुक्ती प्राप्त की थी, जिसमे उनकी प्रथम पोस्टिंग जम्मू काश्मीर के ‘सोपोर’ नामक स्थान पर “१३ जे एंड के राइफल (१३ जम्मू और काश्मीर राइफल)” में हुई थी।

हमारे भारतीय सेना के ‘शेरशाह’ यानि विक्रम बत्रा की प्रेम कहानी किसी भी फिल्म की कहानी से कम नही है। आपको ये जानकर काफी दिलचस्पी होगी की चंडीगढ युनिवर्सिटी मे एम.ए की पढाई की दौरान विक्रम बत्रा की मुलाखात डिम्पल चिमा से हुई थी जिनके बीच शुरू मे काफी अच्छी दोस्ती हुई और देखते ही देखते ये दोस्ती प्यार मे बदल गई थी।

विक्रम और डिम्पल ने कुछ दिनो के पश्चात शादी करने का फैसला भी लिया था, जिसमे आगे भारतीय सेना मे शामिल होने के बाद विक्रम को पहले देहरादून ट्रेनिंग की वजह से और फिर काश्मीर मे पोस्टिंग की वजह से चंडीगढ छोडना पडा था।

इन दोनो का प्यार इतना सच्चा और अटूट था के साल १९९९ में हुए कारगिल युध्द के दौरान कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए थे, तब डिम्पल ने कभी भी शादी ना करने का फैसला लिया था। तबसे लेकर आज तक डिम्पल चिमा ने शादी नही की है और वो एक अविवाहित के तौर पर स्कूल मे अध्यापिका का कार्य कर रही है।

विक्रम बत्रा के माता-पिता ने डिम्पल से जीवन मे आगे बढकर शादी करने के लिए बहुत बार समझाया पर उसका यही जवाब रहा के ‘उसके लिए विक्रम की यादे ही सब कुछ है, जिसमे वो अपना पुरा जीवन व्यतीत करना चाहती है’।

सही मायने मे हमारी भारतीय सेना का ‘शेरशाह’ ना केवल जंग के मैदान मे बल्की प्यार और रिश्ते-नातो के इम्तेहान मे भी दिल जीत गया।

कारगिल का युध्द और कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा की शहादत – Kargil War and Captain Vikram Batra Martyrdom

काश्मीर के सोपोर मे लगभग १८ महिने के सेवाकाल के पश्चात विक्रम बत्रा को कारगिल युध्द मे शामिल होकर देश की सेवा करने का मौका मिला, जिसमे उनके अद्भुत शौर्य, साहस और वीरता का परिचय समुचे विश्व को देखने को मिला।

कारगिल का युध्द जिन विषम परिस्थितीयो मे लड़ा जा रहा था उसमे ये अनुमान लगाना मुश्किल था के काश्मीर के ऊँचे चोटी पे दुश्मन कहाँ छुपके बैठा है, उसकी संख्या कितनी है तथा उसके पास मौजूद शस्त्र और गोला बारूद कितनी मात्रा में है।

इतना बेशक तय हुआ था के भारत की बहुत सी चौकियो पे पाकिस्तानी सेना और उसके समर्थित अतांकियो ने कब्जा जमाया हुआ है, जहाँ से उन्हें खदेड़ना ना केवल भारतीय सेना का लक्ष्य था बल्कि उस समय के प्राप्त परिस्थिति की ये आवश्यकता भी थी।

इसी के अंतर्गत विभिन्न भारतीय बटालियन को पाकिस्तानी सेना को भारतीय चौकियो से खदेड़ने का नेतृत्व सौपा गया जिसमे लेफ्टनंट पद पर कार्य कर रहे विक्रम बत्रा के रेजिमेंट १३ जे एंड के राइफल को भी यह कार्य सौपा गया था।

इसिके तहत विक्रम बत्रा के नेतृत्व वाली टुकड़ी ने हम्प और राकी नाब को जीतकर वहाँ भारत का तिरंगा फहरा दिया, इसी सफलता के लिए लेफ्टनेंट विक्रम बत्रा को लेफ़्टनंट से पदोन्नती देकर कैप्टन बना दिया गया था।

इस सफलता के बाद अगला लक्ष्य पॉइंट ५१४० चोटी तय हुआ जिस के लिये इस पुरे मिशन हेतू विभिन्न तुकडीयो के कमांडिंग ऑफिसर को कोडवर्ड दिया था, जिसमे कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा का कोड नेम ‘शेरशाह’ रखा गया था। ‘शेरशाह’ का कारगिल युध्द मे अदम्य साहस और शौर्य देख पाकिस्तानी सेना भी खौफ मे पड गई थी।

पॉइंट ५१४० चोटी को जितने के बाद विक्रम बत्रा की अपने वरिष्ठ सैन्य अधिकारी से जीत पर पहली प्रतिक्रिया ‘यह दिल मांगे मोअर’ थी जो के बादमे काफी फेमस हुई, दरअसल ये उस समय कोल्ड्रिंक कंपनी प्रेप्सी का स्लोगन था, जिसे विक्रम बत्रा ने मानो मशहूर कर दिया था।

आगे सबसे दुर्गम इलाके मे स्थित पॉइंट ४८७५ पे अपने सहकर्मियो के साथ कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा ने हमला बोल दिया जिसमे भारतीय सेना ने दुश्मनो को काफी ज्यादा क्षतिग्रस्त किया। मानो ये कार्य अंतिम मोड पर था उसी समय कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा बुरी तरह से घायल हुए फिर भी उन्होने सीने पर गोलिया झेलकर दुश्मन को तहेस नहेस कर दिया और पॉइंट ४८७५ को जीत लिया, जिसमे उन्हे अंतिमतः वीरगति प्राप्त हुई।

इस प्रकार से मात्र २४ वर्ष की आयु मे भारत माता के वीर सपूत कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा अपने जीवन का सर्वोच्च बलिदान कर दिया और वे चीर निद्रा को प्राप्त हुए। हमे गर्व है कैप्टन विक्रम बत्रा पे और भारत कें उन सभी वीर जवानो पे जो दिन रात मातृभूमी की सेवा के लिए हमारी सीमाओ पर तैनात है और देशसेवा मे अपने जीवन को खर्च कर रहे है।

Shershaah: Why the story of Captain Vikram Batra has enduring appeal

We revisit the story of captain vikram batra, and his contribution to india's victory in the kargil conflict..

A recently released Hindi film, Shershaah, has brought the spotlight back on Captain Vikram Batra, a war hero who had been martyred during the Kargil war of 1999. The film, which stars Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani in key roles, started streaming on Amazon Prime Thursday, in time for the 75th Independence Day of India. We revisit the story of Captain Vikram Batra, and his contribution to India’s victory in the Kargil conflict. Batra was awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry honour for his valour, posthumously.

Born to teachers

Captain Vikram Batra was born to a family of teachers, his father a principal of a government school and his mother a school teacher. Batra was active in sports during his school time, especially in table tennis and karate, in which he was a green belt holder.

Batra attended the DAV college in Chandigarh , enrolling in Bsc Medical Sciences. It was during his stint at the DAV college that he became a cadet with the National Cadet Corps (NCC). He was adjudged the best NCC Air Wing cadet of Punjab Directorate, North Zone, during the inter-state NCC Camp. Batra soon worked his way up to become the Senior Under Officer at his NCC unit and eventually marched at the Republic Day Parade in 1994. That’s when he told his parents he wanted to join the army.

Batra also had an offer from a shipping company headquartered in Hong Kong to join the merchant navy. But Batra declined the offer and enrolled in a MA English course at Panjab University instead, so he could prepare for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) exam.

Top recruit

Batra took the CDS exam and was selected by the Services Selection Board (SSB) at Allahabad in 1996. In the order of Merit, Batra was among the top 35 recruits. After completing an year in his MA course, Batra joined the Indian Military Academy(IMA) in Dehradun and was part of the Manekshaw Battalion.

He completed a rigorous 19-month training course and was commissioned into the Indian Army as lieutenant in the 13th battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. He received his first posting to Sopore, Baramulla, after he underwent additional training in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh .

Sopore was an area of significant militant activity, and Batra had many skirmishes with the militants. Batra also undertook the Commando course in Belgaum and was awarded the highest honour — that of an Instructor’s Grade.

The Kargil War

Batra’s battalion, the 13 JAK Rifles came to Drass in early June. By then, the Kargil conflict had been underway for a month and had escalated to a full-out war. Irregular and regular Pakistani troops had infiltrated into the Indian side of the Line Of Control and captured strategic Indian territories. The Indian Army, with the help of the Indian Air Force, had launched Operation to reclaim the territories.

Batra’s battalion, the 13 JAK Rifles were to act as reserves to the 2nd battalion, the Rajputana Rifles. The 13 JAK Rifles played a significant role in the capture of Point 5140 under the leadership of Lt Col. Yogesh Kumar Joshi. It was during the briefing for the capture of Point 5140 that Batra used the phrase ‘Yeh Dil Mange More’ – taken from a popular Pepsi ad campaign – as his success signal.

Batra was severely injured during the attack, but he killed three enemy combatants and a large number of arms and ammunition were recovered. India didn’t suffer a single loss of life during the capture of Point 5140. In fact, the victory started off a string of successful recaptures, and the Indian army captured Point 5100, Point 4700, Junction Peak and the Three Pimple Complex.

Distinguished himself

Lieutenant Batra’s triumph at Point 5140 had been played across on national TV. General Ved Prakash Malik, the then Chief of Army Staff had called Batra up personally to congratulate him on the triumph. Batra, who was still a lieutenant at that point, was promoted to the rank of a Captain.

In the meanwhile, his battalion the 13 JAK Rifles was sent to Mushkoh valley, under the command of 79 Mountain Brigade. The battalion was assigned the task of recapturing Point 4875, a peak that held significant strategic importance, for it dominated National Highway 1, right from Dras to Matayan. It made a stretch of about 35-40 kilometres of national highway come under direct observation of the Pakistani forces, and they could easily watch the Indian army’s movements and troops movements.

Batra was unwell with fever and was recuperating in a sleeping bag. After initial reconnaissance, the operation was launched at night. The assault continued all night, with Indian forces facing stiff enemy fire from Pakistani snipers. Point 4875 was captured, and so was Area Flat Top an adjacent peak. But immediately after that, enemy forces launched their first counter offensive to recapture Area Flat Top. The Indian army was holding the area under Captain NA Nagappa, and they had fended off the first counter attack. Nagappa was injured. At the same time, the Pakistani forces started a second counter-attack to gain back Area Flat Top.

At this stage, Batra volunteered himself as reinforcement for the attack. Several other soldiers of his company offered to accompany him, without official orders. Many even risking a court martial. Batra, accompanied by 25 other men, prayed at a Durga temple and left in the middle of the night to recapture the feature.

The battle continued till daylight. Batra killed four enemy soldiers and successfully defended Area Flat Top. He was evacuating an injured soldier when he was hit in the chest from an enemy sniper and a second later was hit by a Rocket Propelled Grenade(RPG). Batra breathed his last next to his fellow company man.

Captain Batra was awarded the Param Vir Chakra on August 15, 1999. The award was received by his father on January 26, 2000, during the Republic Day Parade by President KR Narayanan.

Part of the citation read “ …Despite sustaining grave injuries, he crawled towards the enemy and hurled grenades clearing the position with utter disregard to his personal safety, leading from the front, he rallied his men and pressed on the attack and achieved a near impossible military task in the face of heavy enemy fire. The officer, however, succumbed to his injuries.

Inspired by his daredevil act, his troops fell upon the enemy with vengeance, annihilated them and captured Point 4875. Captain Vikram Batra, thus, displayed the most conspicuous personal bravery and leadership of the highest order in the face of the enemy and made the supreme sacrifice in the highest traditions of the Indian Army.”

Captain Batra has been recognised across the country for his valour and bravery. Given his role in the capture of Point 4875, the mountain has been named Batra Top. The Service Selection Centre in Allahabad has named a hall as the Vikram Batra Block. The IMA in Dehradun has named a cadet’s mess as the Vikram Batra Mess. The Mukarba Chowk and its flyover have been renamed Shaheed Captain Vikram Batra Chowk.

The film, Shershaah, revisits the life and journey of Captain Vikram Batra, complete with his relationship with Dimple Cheema. In the film, actor Kiara Advani plays the role of Cheema. It’s not the first time that Batra’s life has been captured on screen, In the 2003 war film LOC:Kargil, actor Abhishek Bachchan essayed the role of Vikram Batra.

Of courage, valor and selflessness: vikram batra.

On the anniversary of his birth, let us take the time to reflect on the bravery and the selfless acts of Vikram Batra.

There has been a film made about him just recently. And while the film itself is an admirable adaptation of his life and the principles he lived by, it is crucial that we remember Vikram Batra in a more solemn manner. Awarded the Param Vir Chakra for his acts of valor during the Kargil War, Vikram Batra gave his life so that the men in his company could live. That singular act of selflessness and courage at the age of twenty-four is something that is worthy of true respect and reverence.

Born on 9th September 1974, in Palampur, Himachal Pradesh, Batra was the third child of Girdhari Lal Batra, a school principal, and Kamal Kanta Batra, a school teacher. Before going on to attend the DAV Public School, in Palampur, Batra would receive his primary education from his mother. Batra’s childhood, by all accounts, was one of complete engagement, with him not only excelling academically but also representing his school in several national-level sports competitions. Batra was especially skilled at table tennis, with him and his twin brother, Vishal, representing their school in that particular sport at the All India KVS Nationals.

Having finished his Bachelor’s degree, from the DAV College, Chandigarh, Batra would go on to pursue a Master’s degree in English Literature from Punjab University, Chandigarh, while simultaneously preparing for the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examinations. During that time, Batra would actually attend classes, at his university, in the evenings and spend his mornings working part-time as a branch manager at a local travelling agency. The sole reason he did that was to help his family avoid additional financial pressures. In 1996, having passed his CDS examination and selected, Batra left university to join the Indian Military Academy.

Beginning his tenure at the Indian Military Academy in June of 1996, Batra would undergo a nineteen month training course before being assigned to the 13th Battalion of Jammu And Kashmir Rifles (13 JAK Rifles), being commissioned as a lieutenant in the Indian Army. Before his battalion’s eventual deployment to Dras, due to the outbreak of the Kargil War, Batra would serve at Sopore in the Baramulla district of Jammu And Kashmir. During his time there, he would just narrowly escape death when his platoon came into conflict with a group of militants.

Vikram Batra’s time in the Kargil War can majorly be traced through two incredibly important skirmishes, that of the capture of Point 5140, a strategically important mountain peak in the Dras Sector, and the capture of Point 4875, another strategically important peak in the Mushkoh Valley.

With the 13 JAK Rifles assigned under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Yogesh Kumar Joshi, a strategic plan to capture Point 5140 came into being. Joshi would attack Point 5140 with the help of Bravo Company, under the command of Lieutenant Sanjeev Singh Jamwal, and Delta Company, under the command of Lieutenant Batra. On June 20th, 1999, just after midnight, the two companies began climbing the mountain peak. It wasn’t, however, till late into the day, that the two companies had consolidated their positions and claimed their respective objectives. Batra would go on to be crucial in the capture of Point 5140, even being able to recover a heavy anti-aircraft gun from the Pakistani forces positioned there. Famously, Batra’s call sign, signalling the success of his company in achieving their directed goal, was ‘Dil Mange More’.

Shortly after the capture of Point 5140, the 13 JAK Rifles were directed to move from Dras to Ghumri to rest and recoup, before being deployed to Mushkoh Valley on the 30th of June, 1999.

Upon their arrival, the 13 JAK Rifles were placed under the command of 79 Mountain Brigade, tasked with the capture of Point 4875. The peak dominated the National Highway 1 route from Dras to Matayan and, consequently, gave the opposing army an incredible observational advantage of approximately thirty to forty kilometres of the national highway. It became critical, then, for the Indian Army to claim this peak. And they did just that.

The victory, however, was short-lived. An adjacent peak to Point 4875, codenamed ‘Area Flat Top’, had been captured on July 5th, 1999, by the Indian Army. However, an immediate counterattack by the Pakistani Army followed. When the commanding captain, NA Nagappa, was injured in the defense of ‘Area Flat Top’, the Pakistani Army seized the opportunity to further their advance. The Indian platoon positioned at ‘Area Flat Top’ needed reinforcements immediately so that they could adequately hold the position. It was then that Batra, despite being sick and in recovery from his injuries from the battle of Point 5140, volunteered to lead a force to provide reinforcements. Twenty-five men from Batra’s Company, moved by his courage, volunteered to go with him, despite no direct orders being given.

With the situation dire, Batra and his Delta Company began to make the climb. It wasn’t until much later that they became aware of enemy presence on a narrow ledge, running north of Point Batra, alongside his men, was instrumental in destroying the positions that the Pakistani Army held along that ledge. However, they were pinned down due to heavy machine-gun fire at a later junction.

Realizing there was no other way around, Batra personally charged into the fray, managing to make the enemy retreat from their position. However, he sustained numerous injuries in the process. Still undeterred, Batra noticed one of his men had been injured in the firefight that had just ensued. It was then that he decided to help evacuate the injured soldier, along with the help of Subedar R. Singh. Batra, however, was adamant in shielding the injured soldier and Singh from enemy gunfire, placing himself in the direct line of fire. It was during that attempt, to save the lives of his men, that Batra was shot in the chest by an enemy sniper before a splinter, from an RPG, hit him in the head. Vikram Batra, finally, succumbed to his injuries.

Posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, Vikram Batra served as a symbolic representation of the idea of selflessness and the pursuit of something greater than one’s own self.

5 Hidden Gems: Lesser Known Literary Gem of a Writer From India

We bring to you a few literary gem of a writer who are either forgotten or not recognised on the occasion of World Book Day.

In this fast-paced world where thoughts travel faster than souls through the various realms, it has become hard to find writers who are truly exceptional in their field. With commercialisation as the goal, many writers have compromised their writing to reach out to the masses. Yet among them stands a few such literary gems who have stood the test of time but are either forgotten or not recognised. Today we shed light on these gems on the occasion of World Book Day.

Bama Faustina Soosairaj

Bama, otherwise known as Bama Faustina Soosairaj, was born in the year 1958. She is a Tamil Dalit feminist, educator and writer who has written multiple novels and short stories. Her book Karukku , an autobiographical novel published in 1992, details the various triumphs and tribulations that Dalit Christian women encounter in Tamil Nadu. Furthermore, Bama has authored two more novels, Sangati (1994) and Vanmam (2002), as well as three collections of short stories, namely Kusumbukkaran (1996), Oru Tattvum Erumaiyum (2003) and Kandattam (2009). Bama’s impressive bibliography includes twenty short stories making her a true literary gem of India.

Easterine Kire

Easterine Kire, a writer and poet residing in the northern part of Norway, draws inspiration for her literary works from the real-life experiences of the people of Nagaland, situated in the northeastern region of India. In an interview, she expressed her compulsion to develop written literature in the Naga language, stating, “I sensed a need to generate a body of Naga literature. While we possess an extensive repertoire of oral narratives, they will all dissipate as the oral tradition fades away.” Kire’s artistic pursuits are not restricted to writing alone, as she collaborates with Jazzpoesi, a musical group, to deliver performances comprising Jazz poetry.

Jerry Pinto

Jerry Pinto, a luminary born in 1966 and based in Mumbai, is a Mumbai-based writer, poet, and journalist, known for his works that explore mental health, gender, and sexuality. He has a multitude of accomplishments to his name including his prowess as a poet, novelist, short story writer, translator and journalist. Pinto’s vast body of work comprises several notable pieces, namely Helen: The Life and Times of an H-Bomb (2006), Surviving Women (2000) and Asylum and Other Poems (2003). In 2012, his masterpiece Em and the Big Hoom was released, marking his debut as a novelist. The quality of his fiction was recognised when he was honoured with the distinguished Windham-Campbell Prize in 2016. Moreover, the celebrated wordsmith was conferred the highly coveted Sahitya Akademi Award in 2016 for his aforementioned magnum opus, Em and the Big Hoom , a true literary gem indeed.

Hailing from Balasore, Odisha, Manoj Das is a bilingual Odia writer who writes in both Odia and English. A true master of dramatic expression, he believes that characters follow the theme of the story and words are merely added to represent their thoughts. A firm believer in letting his characters speak their stories, his characters hail from different backgrounds, adding new flavours to his fiction and different dimensions to human nature. Some of his famous works in Odia include Shesha basantara chithi (1966) , Manoj Dasanka katha o kahani (1971), Dhumabha diganta (1971), etc. Some of his major works in English include The Crocodiles Lady: A Collection of Stories (1975), Farewell to a Ghost: Short Stories and a Novelette (1994), Cyclones (1987), A Tiger at Twilight (1991), etc.

Perumal Murugan

A man who remains true to his roots, Perumal Murugan is a writer who keeps the village that nourished him close to his heart. A chronicler of the ordinary man of India, Murugan is a writer for whom the village of India is his playground and their tales and the change of seasons are his background. The way he captures the intimate details of village life with a brutal tone is what is bound to make everyone think twice before dismissing his works. A true artist who is dedicated to his craft he decided to stop writing briefly around 2015 and declared, “Perumal Murugan the writer is dead. As he is no God, he is not going to resurrect himself. He also has no faith in rebirth. An ordinary teacher, he will live as P. Murugan. Leave him alone.” after being harassed by right-wing groups who objected to the portrayal of the characters and Hindu gods in his book , One Part Woman (2010). It was only after the Madras High Court supported his stance, dismissed the concerns of the opposition and further ordered the state government to provide appropriate protection when artistic or literary people are under attack, did Murugan picked up his writing pen once again. Some of his notable works include Poonachi: Or the Story of a Black Goat (2017), Pyre (2013), One Part Woman (2010), etc.

This World Book Day we celebrate all the writers, especially the not-so-popular ones. The ones who create literary masterpieces, more for their soul than for the readers. By understanding these signs, we can take control of our well-being and steer ourselves towards a healthier, stress-free life.On account of Stress Awareness Month here are some tips to tackle stress effectively.

Stress is a physiological response to environmental or physical pressure that can affect adults and children. Some signs of stress in adults include:

• Feeling irritable, angry, impatient, or wound up
• Feeling overwhelmed
• Feeling anxious, nervous, or afraid
• Having racing thoughts that you can’t switch off
• Not being able to enjoy yourself
• Feeling depressed
• Feeling uninterested in life

Fostering connections with others is not just a way to relieve stress, it’s a lifeline. Whether through heartfelt conversations with loved ones or active participation in community-based initiatives, forging bonds of support can mitigate feelings of isolation and despair. By extending a helping hand to others, we not only allow ourselves to nurture our own well-being but also relieve them from their suffering in the process. In this journey, we are not alone. Born on 18 April 1809, Henry Louis Vivian Derozio remains a largely forgotten figure in Indian history. On his 215th birthday, let’s remember him for his contributions to Indian education and the Bengal Renaissance. Derozio, of Indian-Portuguese origin, is celebrated for his impactful work.  

Henry Louis Vivian Derozio was born in Entally-Padmapukur in Kolkata to Francis and Sophia Johnson Derozio. His family name was originally “do Rozário”. He went to the David Drummond Dharmatala Academy school from 6 to 14, where he admired the inclusive education that brought together Indian, Eurasian and European children of diverse social backgrounds. During his time at the school, he discovered and enjoyed reading poetry by contemporary Romantic writers such as John Keats, Percy Shelley, Lord Byron, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Professional Life

Derozio dropped out of school at the age of 14 to start working. His first job was in his father’s office in Kolkata. He later moved to his uncle’s indigo factory in Bhagalpur. The serene beauty of the River Ganges inspired him to write poetry, and he began submitting his work to the India Gazette. Gradually, his poetry gained attention, and by 1825, numerous newspapers and magazines were publishing his poems.

At 18 years old in 1827, Derozio’s poetry caught the attention of editor John Grant. Impressed by his work, Grant offered to publish a book of his poems and encouraged him to come back to Kolkata. Following this, Derozio worked as an assistant editor for Grant and began contributing writings to various other publications. In addition, he took on the initiative of starting his own newspaper called the “Calcutta Gazette”, where he continued to showcase his literary talent.

Social Contributions of Henry Louis Vivian Derozio

At the age of 17, in 1826, Derozio started working as a teacher at Hindu College. He taught English Literature and History with great passion and introduced innovative teaching methods that caused a sensation at the college. Derozio organized debates where students freely exchanged ideas about societal norms, reforms, and social concepts. In 1828, he inspired students to establish a literary and debating club called the Academic Association. This period also witnessed significant upheaval within Bengali Hindu society, leading to further changes in education and culture. 

In 1828, Raja Ram Mohan Roy founded the Brahmo Samaj, which upheld Hindu beliefs but rejected idol worship. This sparked opposition from traditional Hindu society. Derozio played a role in discussing emerging ideas for social change at that time. Despite his young age, he was highly regarded as a scholar and thinker. He quickly gathered a group of bright students at college around him and consistently urged them to think independently, question everything, and not accept things without scrutiny. His teachings inspired the growth of concepts such as freedom, equality, and liberty. They also worked towards eliminating societal issues and improving conditions for women and peasants while advocating for freedoms like press freedom and trial by jury, etc. His activities led to an intellectual revolution in Bengal known as the Young Bengal Movement; his pupils were termed “Derozians” who were passionate nationalists too.

As a result of criticism from traditional parents who disapproved of his extensive and candid conversation about religious matters, Derozio was let go from his position in April 1831, shortly before he passed away. After Derozio passed away from cholera, his impact continued to resonate with his former students. They were later recognized as Young Bengal and many of them went on to make significant contributions in social reform, law, and journalism.

Henry Louis Vivian Derozio made a big impact by supporting education, literature, and social reform during the Bengal Renaissance. His ideas have had a lasting influence on critical thinking and progressive values in Indian society. Despite facing challenges, his legacy lives on through the Young Bengal Movement. The Stray Dogs Tales: Rescue For A Cause

Rescuing strays is not a compulsion but a choice. Let’s understand the importance of rescuing better with the tales of Blacky and Biki.

Dogs are a man’s best friend. But sadly for many in India, this best friend comes with a price tag, because of the societal compulsion to get a pedigree dog to show one’s social status. According to the report titled, “State of Pet Homelessness Project”, released by pet food company Mars Petcare India, over 60 million homeless pets such as dogs and cats in India are living on the streets. With other socio-political human issues taking up the entirety of the newspaper, our best friends hardly get any recognition. Let’s try to understand the condition of today’s stray dogs through two case studies, i.e., Blacky and Biki.

The Tale of Blacky

Blacky’s day starts at around 9-10 am casually looking at the streets and staring at the passersby. At times he changes his spot from lazing in front of his favourite shop called ROG to the hardware store called, Mtech Services; which is right in front of ROG. He is not like your average dog who would accept pets and treats from every Tom, Dick and Harry. His days on the streets have taught him better than that. He doesn’t appreciate being touched, he won’t accept your treats when you’re staring at him. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t notice your affection, he just doesn’t like to look easy. A dog is almost always expected to be warm and friendly but Blacky is anything but that. But you know the weirdest thing? He never bites. He growls to let you know that he doesn’t appreciate the petting or the staring but he means no harm. 

Normally many people ignore him for his not-so-typical friendly dog-like behaviour but the owner of ROG and a few other people who have managed to gain his trust adore him. Given his uncharacteristic behaviour, one can only speculate what hardships he must have endured to make him lose faith in all humanity. Yet he refuses to give up on living. Showing up one day out of the blue in 2012, Blacky continued to live his life in the best way he can on the streets of Taverekere, Bengaluru. Neglected, diseased but never beaten up by life, Blacky trudged on till 2024 probably never finding the comfort of a home.

The Tale of Biki

On the streets of Taverekere, Bengaluru there thrives another paw spirit, Biki. Unlike Blacky Biki is a laidback friendly dog. He doesn’t exactly jump on you or wag his tail when you meet but he enjoys your company which is evident by the way he doesn’t mind you petting his head or showering him with rubs. He graciously accepts all the food you give him, but there are days when he just walks around without having even a grain of rice to quench his hunger. 

With puppy eyes and a golden heart, Biki roams around the streets hoping to one day be showered with all the love and affection that he deserves. Yet all he gets are a few pets here and there. Some leftovers in the trash or some biscuits left by passersby. 

The Middlepoint

The similarity between the tales of Biki and Blacky are many but the one that stands out the most is the fact that they are creatures who deserve as much love as any other pet in the world. But sadly all they get are biscuits and passing pets as strays. It hurts to see them in this state, but it hurts your bank balance when you buy a dog instead of giving one a home. Sure they both are highly neglected, smelly and probably carry some germs, but choosing someone furry with a price tag, not only deprives a needy stray of a home but also leads to the vicious cycle of breeding. Sure there are many ethical breeders but backyard breeding is still highly prevalent in our country.

Putting these innocent pups through that life of illegal breeding seems like a nightmare but is the reality in many places. Buying from ethical breeders is not bad but you must first check how they are breeding the dogs and taking care of them before going ahead with them. But instead of getting a dog who might be unsuitable for Indian climates or not resistant to the diseases commonly found in dogs in India, consider adopting local dogs who are resistant to many of the diseases in India, are perfectly suitable for Indian climates and desperately need a home.

Rescuing strays is not a compulsion but a choice that truly could help many furry paws that need a home.

His life was lost while he fought fearlessly for the protection of his nation during the Kargil war. Through his courage and leadership skills, he brought victory to the Kargil war. His Paramvir chakra award was presented on 15th August, the 52nd Independence Day of India.

My view of life has been profoundly altered by his indomitable spirit, fearlessness, dignity, and sacrifice. A true ideal soldier, he was always willing to serve the nation at any time and in any situation. I have learned to be kind because of his kindness in supporting others during difficult times.

I have learned how to stay focused in tough times because of his positive outlook on life and calm demeanor. As a soldier in the Indian armed forces, he has shown us the importance of leading an honorable life.

All of us strive for some goal in life that we hope to achieve one day with consistent work and dedication. As a result of following the life journey and positive attitude of my role model Vikram Batra, my aspiration is to become a successful soldier and serve our nation.

Because I have a strong desire to do something for my motherland and people, I would be honored to protect my nation from enemies. When I can contribute to the people of my country, I will feel fulfilled. According to my understanding, I am responsible for building a protective wall near my country’s borders.

My daily routine has been influenced by the discipline and well-organized lifestyle of soldiers. As a result of such hardships and difficulties, all soldiers become fully responsible for doing their duty professionally. Soldiers must always remain focused on their duties no matter what.

Having a keen awareness of everything around me is an invaluable trait of a soldier. Another reason for my inspiration is Captain Vikram Batra’s complete dignity in all circumstances. While fulfilling all his responsibilities as a soldier, he acted as a loyal friend and leader.

Fighting for his nation had never crossed his mind. He inspired me to become a soldier because of his courage, positive attitude, and sacrifice rather than pursuing any other career path. For all the soldiers who have chosen the life of a soldier to fight and protect their country, I have always had a deep respect for them. As a result of all these reasons, I feel proud of my decision to join the armed forces as a career option.

Conclusion:

It is well known that those who choose to be soldiers live a life of dignity, honor, sacrifice, and unavoidable duty. As a soldier for your country, it is a necessity to always keep these reasons in mind. As a soldier, it is also my responsibility to protect my country and reach a place where no enemy can threaten us.

Captain Vikram Batra’s philosophy will guide me to becoming a superior soldier and fighting for my country in any circumstance. I want my motherland to be safe from enemies at all costs. So, I want to join the Indian army in order to dedicate my life to the nation and to work selflessly for its people.
