Passage 1: Aditya who is working in a multinational company earns ₹150000 per month. Out of his earnings he spend 1/10th on food items, 1/4th on shopping with family, 1/5th of remaining on education of his two kids and rest of his money he puts in his savings.

Difficulty Level: Easy

On basis of this information given in passage answer the following questions.

Q. 1. How much money he spends on food items? (a) 15000 (b) 1500 (c) 1050 (d) 10500

Q. 2. How much money he spend on shopping? (a) 32000 (b) 37500 (c) 25000 (d) 27500

Q. 3. How much money was left with him after spending on food and shopping? (a) 90000 (b) 95000 (c) 98500 (d) 97500

Ans. Option (d) is correct. Explanation: Total earning = ₹ 150000 Money spent on food and shopping = ₹ 15000 + ₹ 37500 = ₹ 52500 Money left after food and shopping = ₹ 150000 – ₹ 52500 = ₹ 97500

Q. 4. Calculate the amount spend by Aditya on education of children?

Sol. Total money earn by Aditya = ₹150000 Total amount spend by him on shopping and food = ₹52500 Money left = ₹150000 – ₹52500= ₹97500 Money spend on education of children $=\frac{1}{5}$ of Money left $\quad=\frac{1}{5}$ of 97500 = ₹19500

Q. 5. How much money he saved?

Sol. Saving = Total earning – total expenditure = 150000 – (15000 + 37500 + 19500) = 150000 – 72000 = ₹78000. Thus money saved by Aditya is ₹78000.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, the Indian national movement had been active in the struggle for independence from British rule for several decades. During the freedom struggle the nationalists had devoted a great deal of time to imagining and planning what a free India would be like. Under the British, they had been forced to obey rules that they had had very little role in making. The long experience of authoritarian rule under the colonial state convinced Indians that free India should be a democracy in which everyone should be treated equally and be allowed to participate in government. What remained to be done then was to work out the ways in which a democratic government would be set up in India and the rules that would determine its functioning. This was done not by one person but by a group of around 300 people who became members of the Constituent Assembly in 1946 and who met periodically for the next three years to write India’s Constitution. These members of the Constituent Assembly had a huge task before them. The country was made up of several different communities who spoke different languages, belonged to different religions, and had distinct cultures. Also, when the Constitution was being written, India was going through considerable turmoil. The partition of the country into India and Pakistan was imminent, some of the Princely States remained undecided about their future, and the socio-economic condition of the vast mass of people appeared dismal. All of these issues played on the minds of the members of the Constituent Assembly as they drafted the Constitution. The Constitution of India guarantees universal adult suffrage for all citizens. When they were making the Constitution, the members of the Constituent Assembly felt that the freedom struggle had prepared the masses for universal adult suffrage and that this would help encourage a democratic mindset and break the clutches of traditional caste, class and gender hierarchies. This means that the people of India have a direct role in electing their representatives. Also, every citizen of the country, irrespective of his/her social background, can also contest in elections. These representatives are accountable to the people. According to the Constitution, there are three organs of government. These are the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. The legislature refers to our elected representatives. The executive is a smaller group of people who are responsible for implementing laws and running the government. In order to prevent the misuse of power by any one branch of government, the Constitution says that each of these organs should exercise different powers. Through this, each organ acts as a check on the other organs of government and this ensures the balance of power between all three.

1.) What is universal adult suffrage? Why is it so necessary?

Answer: The visionary architects of our Constitution foresaw that embracing universal adult suffrage would act as a potent disruptor, shattering the age-old barriers of caste, class, and gender norms, steering us toward a more egalitarian and inclusive societal structure.It would allow the people to directly choose the nation’s leaders.

Answer:The public’s right to hold elected authorities accountable is emphasised strongly in the Constitution. By making sure that representatives answer for their deeds and decisions, it maintains democratic values like accountability, responsiveness, and public service. As a result, a strong and accountable democratic system is fostered, with elected officials prioritising the welfare of their constituents.

The section on Fundamental Rights has often been referred to as the ‘conscience’ of the Indian Constitution. Colonial rule had created a certain suspicion of the State in the minds of the nationalists and they wanted to ensure that a set of written rights would guard against the misuse of State power in independent India. Fundamental Rights, therefore, protect citizens against the arbitrary and absolute exercise of power by the State. The Constitution, thus, guarantees the rights of individuals against the State as well as against other individuals. Moreover, the various minority communities also expressed the need for the Constitution to include rights that would protect their groups. The Constitution, therefore, also guarantees the rights of minorities against the majority. As Dr Ambedkar has said about these Fundamental Rights, their object is two-fold. The first objective is that every citizen must be in a position to claim those rights. And secondly, these rights must be binding upon every authority that has got the power to make laws. In addition to Fundamental Rights, the Constitution also has a section called Directive Principles of State Policy. This section was designed by the members of the Constituent Assembly to ensure greater social and economic reforms, and to serve as a guide to the independent Indian State to institute laws and policies that help reduce the poverty of the masses.

Below are the practice questions on exponents and powers for class 8 with detailed solutions.

Question 1: Simplify (27) 2/3 – (81) 1/2 .

(27) 2/3 – (81) 1/2 = (3 3 ) 2/3 – (9 2 ) 1/2

= 3 3 × ⅔ – 9 2 × ½

= 9 – 9 = 0

∴ (27) 2/3 – (81) 1/2 = 0.

Question 2: If 3 x – y = 27 and 3 x + y = 243, then what is the value of x and y?

Given, 3 x – y = 27 = 3 3 and 3 x + y = 243 = 3 5

Comparing the powers on both sides of the exponents, we get

⇒ x – y = 3 ….(i)

x + y = 5 ….(ii)

Adding equations (i) and (ii),

then y = 1.

Question 3: Simplify the following:

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{3^{-5}\times 5^{-7}\times (-2)^{3}}{3^{4}\times 5^{-2}\times (-2)^{-3}}\end{array} \)

Using the laws of exponents,

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{3^{-5}\times 5^{-7}\times (-2)^{3}}{3^{4}\times 5^{-2}\times (-2)^{-3}}=3^{(-5-4)}\times 5^{(-7+2)}\times (-2)^{(3+3)}\end{array} \)

= -2 6 /(3 9 × 5 5 ).

Question 4: Determine (8x) x if 9 x + 2 = 240 + 9 x .

9 x + 2 = 240 + 9 x

⇒ 9 x . 9 2 – 9 x = 240

⇒ 9 x (9 2 – 1) = 240

⇒ 9 x × (81 – 1) = 240

⇒ 9 x = 240/80 = 3

⇒ (3 2 ) x = 3

Comparing powers on both the sides,

2x = 1 ⇒ x = ½

∴ (8x) x = (8 × ½) ½ = 4 1/2 = 2.

(ii) ( –5x 3 /2y –4 ) –3

(i)8x 5 y 7 / 12x 9 y 4 = ⅔ (x 5 – 9 y 7 – 4 ) = 2y 3 /3x 4 .

(ii) ( –5x 3 /2y –4 ) -3 = [( –5) – 3 × (x 3 ) – 3 ] / [2 –3 . (y –4 ) – 3 ]

= { –8 × x –9 }/{125 y 12 }

= –8/125x 9 y 12 .

Question 6: Given, 10 0.48 = x and 10 0.70 = y and x z = y 2 , then find the approximate value of z.

Given, x z = y 2 ⇒ (10 0.48 ) z = (10 0.70 ) 2

⇒ 10 0.48z = 10 1.40 ⇒ 0.48z = 1.40

⇒ z = 140/48 = 2.9 (approx.)

Question 7: If 5 3x + 2 = 25 × 5 (4x – 1) , then find the value of x.

We have, 5 3x + 2 = 25 × 5 (4x – 1)

⇒ 5 3x + 2 = 5 2 × 5 (4x – 1)

⇒ 5 3x + 2 = 5 (2 + 4x – 1)

⇒ 5 3x + 2 = 5 4x + 1

As the bases are equal, comparing powers on both side we get,

3x + 2 = 4x + 1

⇒ 4x – 3x = 2 – 1

Question 8: If 5 x = 3 y = 45 z , then prove that 1/z = 1/x + 2/y.

Given, 5 x = 3 y = 45 z

Then, 5 x = 45 z = (5 × 9) z

⇒ 5 x = 5 z × (3 2 ) z

⇒ 5 x = 5 z × 3 2z …(i)

Similarly, 3 y = 5 z × 3 2z …(ii)

Multiplying equation (i) and (ii), we get,

5 x .3 y = (5 z × 3 2z ) 2

⇒ 5 x .3 y = 5 2z . 3 4z

Comparing powers on both sides.

x = 2z and y = 4z

⇒ 2/x = 1/z and 4/y = z

Adding both the equations,

2/z = 2/x + 4/y

⇒ 1/z = 1/x + 2/y.

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{5(81)^{n+1}-3^{4n+5}}{3\times 3^{4n}+(81)^{n}}\end{array} \)

\(\begin{array}{l}\frac{5(81)^{n+1}-3^{4n+5}}{3\times 3^{4n}+(81)^{n}}=\frac{5\times (3^{4})^{n+1}-3^{4n+5}}{3^{1+4n}+(3^{4})^{n}}\end{array} \)

\(\begin{array}{l}=\frac{5.3^{4}-3^{5}}{3+1}=\frac{5\times 81 – 243}{(3+1)} \end{array} \) \(\begin{array}{l} =\frac{405-243}{4}\end{array} \)

Question 10: Evaluate: (21 2 – 15 2 ) 4/3

(21 2 – 15 2 ) 4/3 . = (441 – 225) 4/3 = (216) 4/3

= (∛216) 4 = 6 4 = 1296

Question 11: If (1331) – x = (225) y , where x and y are integers, then find the value of 3xy.

(1331) – x = (225) y

⇒ (11 3 ) –x = (15 2 ) y

⇒ 11 –3x = 15 2y

The above equation is true only for x = y = 0

∴ 3xy = 3 × 0 × 0 = 0.

Question 12: If (243) – x = (729) y = 3 3 , then find the value of 5x + 6y.

Now, (243) –x = 3 3

⇒ (3 5. ) –x = 3 3

Comparing the powers,

–5x = 3 ⇒ x = –⅗

Again, (729) y = 3 3.

⇒ (9 3 ) y = 3 3

⇒ (3 2 ) 3y = 3 3

⇒ 3 6y = 3 3

6y = 3 ⇒ y = ½

∴ 5x + 6y = 5 × ( –3/5) + 6 × ½

= –3 + 3 = 0

Question 13: If 2 = 10 m and 3 = 10 n , then find the value of 0.15.

0.15 = 1.5/10 = 3/(2 × 10) [as 1.5 = 3/2]

= 10 n /(10 m × 10)

= 10 n – m – 1

Question 14: Given, a = 2 x , b = 4 y , c = 8 z and ac = b 2 . Find the relation between x, y and z.

Given, ac = b 2

⇒ 2 x . 8 z = (4 y ) 2

⇒ 2 x . 2 3z = 2 4y

⇒ 2 x + 3z = 2 4y

Comparing the powers on both sides,

x + 3z = 4y.

Question 15: Find the value of [169 –3 / 196 – 8 ] 1/48 .

[169 –3 / 196 – 8 ] 1/48 = [(13 2 ) –3 / (14 2 ) – 8 ] 1/48

= [13 –3 × 2 / 14 – 8 × 2 ] 1/48

= [13 –6 / 14 – 16 ] 1/48

= [14 16 / 13 6 ] 1/48
