The Case Study Of Vanitas Part 2 - What We Know So Far

Vanitas from The Case Study of Vanitas

On Aug. 6, the English-dubbed version of "The Case Study of Vanitas" arrived at Funimation's website , bringing the steampunk-styled supernatural mystery manga series to life for a whole new audience. The vampire -based anime, set in Paris of the 19th century, is very atmospheric, what with its airships, period clothing and blue-moon and crimson vampires. It starts with the young vampire Noé, who is asked by his teacher to go to Paris to look for the titular book. In an incident on the airship, he meets a girl named Amelia — who turns out to be a vampire named Florifel, who just needs her name returned to her — and blue-eyed Vanitas himself. Vanitas enlists his help in changing the "curse-bearing" vampires back to normal using the grimoire in question.

"The Case Study of Vanitas" has aired 12 episodes of its split-cour season, which is normal for anime shows — but now leaves fans to wonder when Part 2 will happen, and what will happen going forward, since the series hasn't exactly concluded its plot. If you're one of the fans anxiously awaiting news of the second part of the first season, here's what we know so far.

When is the release date for The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

The @vanitas_anime Twitter account announced on Sept. 17 that the second cour (or quarter of a year) of "The Case Study of Vanitas" is coming in January 2022. This is good news, as it means fans won't have too long to wait:  Anime News and Facts is reporting that the 12 episodes in the second part of the split-cour series will air between Jan. 8 and March 26, 2022. It should be noted that these dates refer to the Japanese release, not the English one.

However, English-speaking fans shouldn't experience too much of a delay. The initial Japanese run premiered on various channels starting July 2 ( via Anime News Network ), which means it was subtitled with the first episode dubbed by the time it released on Funimation a little over a month later. Comingsoon.com said that Funimation had released five dubbed episodes by September 17 (a paid subscription is required to access the dubbed versions of newer episodes).

Hopefully, that means U.S. fans will be streaming at least a subtitled second part of Season 1 by springtime.

Who are the characters in The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

The main characters of the series include Noé Archiviste, played in the Japanese by Kaito Ishikawa, and Vanitas (not the original of the book), played by Natsuki Hanae. Supporting characters include Jeanne (Inori Minase), a vampire girl also called the "Hellfire Witch"; Luca (Shino Shimoji), a polite vampire boy ranking just below the queen, who is trying to save his brother; Dominique (Ai Kayano), the aristocratic daughter of the alien lord the Marquis de Sade; Veronica (Yoko Hikasa), Dominique's sister who hates humans; Ruthven (Toshiyuki Morikawa), Luca's uncle and the hero who brokered peace between humans and vampires.

Others include Dante (Taro Kuichi), Johann (Koji Yusa), and Richie (Riho Kuma), Vanitas' information brokers, and Noé's unnamed teacher (Akira Ishida), the one who sent him to find the book. Vampire Naenia (Kaori Nazuka), vampire hunter Laurent (Kengo Kawanishi), Holy Knight Olivier (Tomoaki Maeno) and Noé's first friend Louis de Sade (Miyuri Shimabukuru) also appear. There's also the cat, Murr (Miyu Komaki). Not all have survived Season 1, though, so they won't necessarily appear in Part 2.

The English dub cast of the series includes Stephen Fu as Noe, Zeo Robinson as Vanitas, Marianne Bray as Murr, Ian Sinclair as Dante, and Hayden Daviau as Amelia.

What is the plot of The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

As the first part of the first season ended, the Beast of Gévaudan has resurfaced, so Noé and Vanitas go to investigate sightings of it. The beast will likely figure largely in the events of the second part of the season, as will Vanitas' relationship with Noé. Viewers may also finally learn the intentions of the secret organization Charlatan because of the big reveal in the end-credits scene. As viewers know, Ruthven figures largely in the plotting that's been going on, and he has hypnotized Noé with Jeanne's unwitting help, which could all blow up in Part 2. Meanwhile, Roland is going through a crisis of faith because he has learned that not all vampires are bad, and the show will no doubt explore the ramifications of that.

"The Case Study of Vanitas" will feature 12 episodes in Season 1 Part 2, making up a total of 24 episodes in the first season. The anime has been rapidly catching up to the manga:  Monsters and Critics predicts that by the 24th episode, the anime will be up to Chapter 43 of the manga. The manga is expected to publish Chapter 61, which means season 2 might be a more difficult sell than the first.

The Case Study of Vanitas  is a steampunk-vampire-themed manga series by Jun Mozuchi. It has been serialized in Square Enix’s Monthly Gangan Joker magazine since 2015. Studio BONES animated the series in 2021 and has a total of 24 episodes. Afterward, the series went on hiatus in May 2022 and returned a year later in May 2023. Yen Press  releases the English versions of the manga and describes the plot: “ Rumors revolving around The Book of Vanitas, a clockwork grimoire of dubious reputation, draw Noé, a young vampire in search of a friend’s salvation, to Paris. What awaits him in the City of Flowers, however, is not long hours treading the pavement or rifling through dusty bookshops in search of the tome. Instead, his quarry comes to him…in the arms of a man claiming to be a vampire doctor! Thrust into a conflict that threatens the peace between humans and vampires, will Noé cast in his lot with the curious and slightly unbalanced Vanitas and his quest to save vampirekind? “

The Case Study of Vanitas

A blog celebrating Mochizuki Jun's new manga: The Case Study of Vanitas! Occasional posts about other fandoms. My name is Lane or Murr. 22-they/them pronouns-Asd ~Header by potatoodles~

I’ve been thinking about chapter one some more. Some of my speculations and questions are under the cut. It’s a pretty long post.

Vampire-Human Relations

So we know that most humans believe that vampires no longer exist or never existed at all. And that humans are just beginning to realize that vampires still exist because of the recent deaths.

image

Vanitas says that the amount of sick vampires is increasing rapidly for some reason, and such a sickness would explain the vampire attacks. This is interesting though, because it means that Vanitas was not able to stop these vampire attacks for some reason. Why would he, who was so eager to catch Amelia, miss nine attacks?

It also seems noteworthy that humans are scared of vampires in the same way that vampires are scared of Vanitas. Humans think that vampires have come back to take revenge for killing them and forcing them into hiding, much in the same way that Vanitas wants to punish vampires for forcing him to live in solitude.

I wonder if someone is creating conflict between human and vampires by staging these attacks? Is someone making vampires sick in order to draw them out of hiding?

The Legend of Vanitas

Is the legend real? Considering how legends were treated in Pandora Hearts -as falsifications created by individuals for the purpose of misleading others- it seems likely that it is not what it appears to be. We know that it doesn’t tell the whole story because his weapon can also be used to save vampires.

But who stands to gain from the current version? It is a vampire tale, but the vampires are not presented positively: they are superstitious, cruel, and ultimately create a monster. However, Vanitas, the victim of the vampires, is not a positive figure either. He’s so bloodthirsty that he becomes demonic. Humans do not even appear in the story.

Vanitas is definitely the most vilified person in the legend. So does someone/group want vampires to fear Vanitas when they don’t have to?

But then, what about the current illness? Despite Vanitas’s book being presented as a vampire-killing tool, we see that it also has the ability to cure vampire illnesses by returning their true names to them. However, Vanitas also seems connected to the illness.

image

We can see in the two pictures above how similar Legendary Vanitas appears to the figure Amelia sees. And while it could be a coincidence (Noe is just imagining the legend), the fact that the illness has the ability to interfere with their true names, just like Vanitas’s book apparently can, makes it seem like they are connected. Also, the idea that Vanitas would want to steal the warmth from vampires makes sense, considering his backstory as a cold and abandoned wanderer. If Vanitas is responsible for the disease, then the legend must have some truth to it.

Is it possible that Vanitas is responsible for the spread of the disease, as well as for its cure? Is it possible that Vanitas is not the person in the legend or that the legend is completely fabricated?

Who is Noe?

Noe is obviously a kind and caring person. However, there are a few things that make Noe a bit suspicious.

For one thing, he has a few connections to the legendary Vanitas:

image

Both lived in isolated forests.

And Noe also expresses admiration for Vanitas’s symbol, a symbol feared by most vampires.

image

His mentor sent him to Paris to find the book of Vanitas and seems to know already that it is not what it appears to be. Noe’s mentor seems sympathetic to the legendary Vanitas, but why? Does he believe that the legendary Vanitas is not a threat to vampires, or does he also hate all vampires?

Furthermore, given how important names are in this series, Noe’s name is a bit disturbing. Vanitas says that Noe means “child of the ark.” The story of Noah is a story where the whole world is wiped out, and Noah must save only a few of each species. Considering the fact that vampires seem to be on the brink of total annihilation, this is ominous. Noah is a savior, but one that can only minimize the damage- he can’t stop the calamity from taking place.

Vanitas’s Intentions

Vanitas is obviously a strange and suspicious person. He is human, but he has inherited the power of an infamous vampire and is using that power to do the opposite of what his predecessor supposedly wanted.

Vanitas says, “I’ll do as I please… use methods I choose… and, no matter what you people want… I will save you…”

From this quote, it seems like Vanitas anticipates resistance from vampires, despite the fact that he is helping them. Perhaps he knows that vampires wouldn’t want to use Vanitas’s book. But then why does he want to save people who don’t want to be saved by him? Is he trying to redeem the name of Vanitas? Or does he mean something else when he says he wants to “save” them?

image

On the page above, the legend states the book will eventually turn its owner into a vampire killer like the legendary Vanitas. The prominence of Vanitas’s hourglass earring in this picture suggests that Vanitas’s time is running out. Is it possible that Vanitas is fighting against his fate by trying to save all vampires?

Vanitas also apparently does not have his own name. He could just be hiding it, but the chapter suggests that only vampires need to fear their true name being used against them. Does this mean that he doesn’t have a “true self,” or that he is somehow truly becoming the Vanitas from the legend?

I think a possession of some sort would explain this line:

“I won’t die… Noe. Even if I’m no longer here…”

If Vanitas becomes possessed/controlled by the legendary Vanitas, it might not even be “him” talking. If the legendary Vanitas has found a way to continue infecting vampires and controlling people through his book, then he really has found a way to transcend death.
