Word class revision

I can practise word class test questions.

Lesson details

Key learning points.

  • There are four types of noun: common, proper, collective and abstract.
  • Nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs build clauses.
  • Determiners introduce nouns.
  • Modal verbs are a type of auxiliary verb.

Common misconception

Pupils may struggle to see adverbs as doing more than saying 'how' verbs are done.

Adverbs modify verbs by saying when, where, how or to what extent they are done - encourage pupils to look for words that modify the verb.

Noun - a naming word for people, places or things

Verb - a doing, being or having word

Adjective - a word that describes a noun

Adverb - a word that can describe a verb or an adjective

Determiner - a word that introduces a noun in a clause or phrase

What Are Word Classes

The words of the English language have been divided into certain classes so that they can be easily understood. This division also helps in the structure of the sentences. A set of words based on the formal properties are called word classes. Word classes are also known parts of speech. The typical word classes are verb, noun, adjective, and adverb. However, there are five other word classes that include prepositions, pronouns, determiners, and interjections. In total, there are nine-word classes in the English language. Some grammarians may also recognize more than eight-word classes.

Verbs are the words that state action. For example, run, work, seem, play, swim, dance, sew, cook, etc.

Nouns are the naming words. These words are used for places, people, and things. For example, father, city, Rome, dog, cat, kid, Ashley, summer, etc.

Adjectives are words that are used to modify nouns. These words describe the characteristics of nouns. For example, kind, beautiful, clever, cheap, expensive, tall, glamorous, huge, etc.

Adverbs are the words that are used to modify adjectives, verbs, and also other adverbs. For example, quickly, ever, away, generally, completely, badly, back, etc.

Prepositions

Prepositions are the words that are used after a noun or a pronoun. These words express a relationship with another word or element from the sentence. For example, down, near, round, to, plus, of, after, etc.

Pronouns are words that are used instead of nouns. They act as a replacement for the nouns. For example, me, you, she, he, his, her, it, mine, this, that, yours, what, whose, etc.

Interjections

Interjections are words with no grammatical value. For example, ouch, oh, well, um, hey, ah, etc.
