PhD by Distance

Our PhD by Distance programme allows you to benefit from our world-class support and the expertise of a Reading-based supervisor, while conducting your research in a location that suits your circumstances. 

The programme is available to candidates who need to study for most of their registration period at another site, whether in the UK, or worldwide. Acceptance for PhD by Distance is subject to the approval of the supervisors and the relevant school or department.

There are several reasons why you may wish to base yourself away from the University of Reading while undertaking your PhD:

• You have an extensive fieldwork element to your research
• You have responsibilities (e.g. caring or employment) that prevent you from attending on campus
• You are already based and/or employed in an environment that is relevant and conducive to their research
• You do not reside within travelling distance of the University
• You are based in a UK research organisation/institution with a collaborative agreement with the University of Reading in place  

What the programme offers

On the PhD by Distance programme, you will benefit from:

• the opportunity to study on  either a part-time (4-6 years duration) or full-time basis (3-4 years duration)
• supervision from one or more leading University of Reading academics, working at the forefront of their field
• access to a range of high-quality training, delivered on campus or online (see section below on Training)
• access to extensive online Library resources
• a PhD qualification which is delivered and examined at the same high academic standard as a campus-based PhD and a standard PhD degree certificate which does not state the mode of study on it.

Training for PhD by Distance students

The doctoral and researcher college provides a suite of generic researcher training open to all doctoral researchers at reading; this complements subject-specific training available via schools. the specific content of the programme changes from year to year but broadly includes the following: .

• Live online training (available off-campus) – A selection of our training sessions in the Reading Researcher Development Programme (RRDP) are delivered live online each year. UK time zone applies
• Recorded tutorials (available off-campus) – A small but growing selection of recorded tutorials on key topics such as managing data, academic English and research funding 
• Face-to-face training (available on campus only) - Other RRDP training sessions and selected longer programmes are offered face-to-face only. Students registered By Distance have access to face-to-face training when physically present on campus.     

By Distance study entails reduced access to training opportunities and on-campus experience. By Distance candidates are encouraged to discuss and mutually agree overall training plans with their supervisor and seek supplementary training external to Reading (e.g. via an employer or nearby institution) as appropriate.

Induction and physical attendance

A University-wide induction event is held by the Doctoral and Researcher College near the start of each term for all new doctoral researchers. PhD by Distance students studying at Reading in the first term are expected to attend. Where it is not possible for PhD by Distance students to attend in person (i.e. they are not on campus), a recording of the induction will be made available on the virtual learning environment.

Students registered By Distance will benefit from being physically present on campus for periods of time, for instance to attend induction and selected training, to meet their supervisor and peers, and to attend at key points such as Confirmation of Registration. It is strongly recommended that the first month of their programme be spent on campus. 

Eligibility

You must meet the following criteria:

• Satisfy the academic and English language entry requirements for PhD study
• The candidate has a research project which can be undertaken successfully by distance; regular access to campus should not be essential for successful completion of the research
• The candidate must be able to demonstrate that they have the time to undertake a PhD on the selected mode (full-time or part-time). Part-time doctoral study at Reading typically equates to between 50% and 60% of full-time
• The candidate has independent access to the resources needed to successfully complete their research; this will vary between candidates and projects but may include access to archives, facilities, data collection, digital infrastructure or space in their off-campus location
• The candidate is well motivated to work alone; they understand that By Distance registration is not an online learning programme and has reduced access to campus training
• The candidate and School/Department have discussed the suitability of their research project and personal circumstances for study by distance
• The candidate, where appropriate, has access to support from a local supervisor or mentor with experience in the academic field and also of supporting students or equivalent researchers. Advisors/mentors may be appointed to provide a regular point of contact, and are normally in a position to act as an ‘advocate’ and provide pastoral care if needed.
• Will study at least two-thirds of your minimum registration period off campus   

If you are intending to study in the Henley Business School, then please check with the  relevant Department within the Business School  about whether PhD by Distance is available before you apply.

A PhD by Distance is not suitable for all candidates. In offering a PhD By Distance programme specific consideration is given to the suitability of the research project, and whether it can be completed successfully without regular access to campus. Further consideration is given to areas of supervision, support, transferable and subject-specific skills training, research environment , progression milestones and the examination process in order to ensure off campus research students receive a comparable (although, not similar) experience to on campus students registered on ‘standard’ PhD programmes.

Before starting your application, you are strongly advised to  navigate to the PhD webpages of your chosen school or department  to read the specific guidance on how to apply, as the requirements can vary. Once you have read the guidance, you will need to make a formal application through the University's  online application system , highlighting that you wish to study for a PhD by Distance (full or part-time). If you have questions about PhD by Distance in a specific school or department, then please contact the relevant School/Department PGR Administrator in the  School PGR Support Team . 

Immigration considerations for international students

PhD by Distance students must ensure that when visiting the University that they obtain the correct visa. The correct type of visa depends upon the period of time which a student intends to spend physically at the University.

PhD by Distance students can visit the University for up to six months within each academic year with a maximum of eighteen months in total for the duration of their programme. Students must discuss their intentions with the Doctoral Research Office (DRO) well in advance of any planned visit to the University. The DRO is well-placed to provide information on a range of immigration-related matters related to Postgraduate Research Programmes [email protected]

Examination

The normal expectation is that the viva of a PhD by Distance student will take place in Reading. Where this is not feasible, online examinations will be arranged.

The online Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program from the Milken Institute School of Public Health (SPH) — ranked No. 11 for best public health school in the United States — is an interdisciplinary leadership training program that prepares experienced public health professionals to drive the global conversation around today’s biggest public health challenges.

In our online DrPH program, you will build applied leadership skills and gain a network of career-enhancing connections — in D.C. and around the world — all while you continue to work. You will emerge as a thought leader who can shape public health policy and programs, and lead societal change around the world.  

The program consists of 48 credits and can be completed in as few as 36 months.

The Milken Institute School of Public Health seeks motivated candidates with a clear vision of their academic and professional goals. You must have a master’s degree and at least four years of professional public health experience to apply to the program. No GRE scores required.  

To complete your online DrPH application, you will need to submit the following materials:

The Doctor of Public Health online program teaches leadership practice and theory through core courses, an in-person immersion, and practice experience. On-campus Immersion*

The DrPH online program begins with a mandatory four-day immersion in late summer/early fall. Both domestic and international students will visit the George Washington University campus in Washington, D.C. to connect with peers and faculty. This immersion serves as the jumping off point for the doctoral program.

In addition to preparing a dissertation portfolio and defense, you will complete the DrPH Applied Practice Experience (DAPEx) in partnership with GW and a sponsoring practice organization. During the DAPEx, you’ll apply a wide range of DrPH competencies, including public health leadership, management and governance.

While the online Doctor of Public Health program is a challenging program that requires a significant time commitment, it enables you to continue your education and your impactful work at the same time.

Machine Learning - CMU

Phd program in machine learning.

Carnegie Mellon University's doctoral program in Machine Learning is designed to train students to become tomorrow's leaders through a combination of interdisciplinary coursework, hands-on applications, and cutting-edge research. Graduates of the Ph.D. program in Machine Learning will be uniquely positioned to pioneer new developments in the field, and to be leaders in both industry and academia.

Understanding the most effective ways of using the vast amounts of data that are now being stored is a significant challenge to society, and therefore to science and technology, as it seeks to obtain a return on the huge investment that is being made in computerization and data collection. Advances in the development of automated techniques for data analysis and decision making requires interdisciplinary work in areas such as machine learning algorithms and foundations, statistics, complexity theory, optimization, data mining, etc.

The PhD program is a full-time in-person committment and is not offered on-line or part-time.

PhD Requirements

Requirements for the phd in machine learning.

• Completion of required courses , (6 Core Courses + 1 Elective)
• Mastery of proficiencies in Teaching and Presentation skills.
• Successful defense of a Ph.D. thesis.

Teaching Ph.D. students are required to serve as Teaching Assistants for two semesters in Machine Learning courses (10-xxx), beginning in their second year. This fulfills their Teaching Skills requirement.

Conference Presentation Skills During their second or third year, Ph.D. students must give a talk at least 30 minutes long, and invite members of the Speaking Skills committee to attend and evaluate it.

Research It is expected that all Ph.D. students engage in active research from their first semester. Moreover, advisor selection occurs in the first month of entering the Ph.D. program, with the option to change at a later time. Roughly half of a student's time should be allocated to research and lab work, and half to courses until these are completed.

Other Requirements In addition, students must follow all university policies and procedures .

Rules for the MLD PhD Thesis Committee (applicable to all ML PhDs): The committee should be assembled by the student and their advisor, and approved by the PhD Program Director(s).  It must include:

• At least one MLD Core Faculty member
• At least one additional MLD Core or Affiliated Faculty member
• At least one External Member, usually meaning external to CMU
• A total of at least four members, including the advisor who is the committee chair

Financial Support

Application Information

For applicants applying in Fall 2024 for a start date of August 2025 in the Machine Learning PhD program, GRE Scores are OPTIONAL. The committee uses GRE scores to gauge quantitative skills, and to a lesser extent, also verbal skills.

Proof of English Language Proficiency If you will be studying on an F-1 or J-1 visa, and English is not a native language for you (native language…meaning spoken at home and from birth), we are required to formally evaluate your English proficiency. We require applicants who will be studying on an F-1 or J-1 visa, and for whom English is not a native language, to demonstrate English proficiency via one of these standardized tests: TOEFL (preferred), IELTS, or Duolingo.  We discourage the use of the "TOEFL ITP Plus for China," since speaking is not scored. We do not issue waivers for non-native speakers of English.   In particular, we do not issue waivers based on previous study at a U.S. high school, college, or university.  We also do not issue waivers based on previous study at an English-language high school, college, or university outside of the United States.  No amount of educational experience in English, regardless of which country it occurred in, will result in a test waiver.

Submit valid, recent scores:   If as described above you are required to submit proof of English proficiency, your TOEFL, IELTS or Duolingo test scores will be considered valid as follows: If you have not received a bachelor’s degree in the U.S., you will need to submit an English proficiency score no older than two years. (scores from exams taken before Sept. 1, 2023, will not be accepted.) If you are currently working on or have received a bachelor's and/or a master's degree in the U.S., you may submit an expired test score up to five years old. (scores from exams taken before Sept. 1, 2019, will not be accepted.)

Applications are evaluated on the strength of the research proposal, research impact, student academic achievements, and leadership potential. Research proposals are evaluated for innovative concepts that are relevant to Google’s research areas, as well as aspects of robustness and potential impact to the field. Proposals should include the direction and any plans of where your work is going in addition to a comprehensive description of the research you are pursuing.

In Canada and the United States, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

What does the Google PhD Fellowship include?

Students receive named Fellowships which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor. There is no employee relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If students wish to apply for a job at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

• Up to 3 year Fellowship
• US $12K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Google Research Mentor
• 1 year Fellowship
• AUD $15K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Up to 2 year Fellowship (effective from 2024 for new recipients)
• Full tuition and fees (enrollment fees, health insurance, books) plus a stipend to be used for living expenses, travel and personal equipment
• US $10K to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• Yearly bursary towards stipend / salary, health care, social benefits, tuition and fees, conference travel and personal computing equipment. The bursary varies by country.

Early-stage PhD students

• Up to 4 year Fellowship

Late-stage PhD students

• US $10K to recognise research contributions, cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
• US $15K per year to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Southeast Asia

• US $10K per year for up to 3 years (or up to graduation, whichever is earlier) to cover stipend and other research related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel

Is my university eligible for the PhD Fellowship Program?

Africa, Australia/New Zealand , Canada, East Asia, Europe and the United States : universities must be an accredited research institution that awards research degrees to PhD students in computer science (or an adjacent field).

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open to universities/institutes in India, Latin America (excluding Cuba), and in eligible Southeast Asian countries/regions (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam).

Restrictions : All award payments and recipients will be reviewed for compliance with relevant US and international laws, regulations and policies. Google reserves the right to withhold funding that may violate laws, regulations or our policies.

What are the eligibility requirements for students?

All regions

• Students must remain enrolled full-time in the PhD program for the duration of the Fellowship or forfeit the award.
• Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
• Students that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible. Government or non-profit organization funding is exempt.
• Past awardees from the PhD Fellowship program are not eligible to apply again.
• Grant of the Fellowship does not mean admission to a PhD program. The awardee must separately apply and be accepted to a PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) at an eligible institution.
• Grant of the Fellowship will be subject to the rules and guidelines applicable in the institution where the awardee registers for the PhD program.

Nominated students in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, Canada and the United States, East Asia and Europe.

Universities should only nominate students that meet the following requirements:

• Africa: Incoming PhD students are eligible to apply, but the Fellowship award shall be contingent on the awardee registering for a full-time PhD program in computer science (or an adjacent field) within the academic award year of the Fellowship award, or the award shall be forfeited.
• Australia and New Zealand : early-stage students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).
• Canada and the United States : students who have completed graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins.
• East Asia: students who have completed most of graduate coursework in their PhD by the academic award year when the Fellowship begins. Students should have sufficient time for research projects after receiving a fellowship.
• Europe: Students enrolled at any stage of their PhD are eligible to apply.

Direct applicant students in India, Latin America and Southeast Asia

• Latin America : incoming or early stage-students enrolled in the first or second year of their PhD (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single, flat (not portfolio) PDF file:

• Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
• Short (1-page) resume/CV of the student's primary PhD program advisor
• Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor's degree to date
• Research proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee''s work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: What impact would receiving this Fellowship have on your education? Describe any circumstances affecting your need for a Fellowship and what educational goals this Fellowship will enable you to accomplish.
• Transcripts of current and previous academic records
• 1-2 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one from the thesis advisor)

Canada, East Asia, the United States

• Cover sheet signed by the Department Chair confirming the student passes eligibility requirements. (See FAQ "What are the eligibility requirements for students?")
• Short (1-page) CV of the student's primary advisor
• 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee's work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
• Research / dissertation proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
• Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)

How many students may each university nominate?

India, Latin America and Southeast Asia : applications are open directly to students with no limit to the number of students that can apply from a university.

Australia and New Zealand : universities may nominate up to two eligible students.

Canada and the United States : Universities may nominate up to four eligible students. We encourage nominating students with diverse backgrounds especially those from historically marginalized groups in the field of computing. If more than two students are nominated then we strongly encourage additional nominees who self-identify as a woman, Black / African descent, Hispanic / Latino / Latinx, Indigenous, and/or a person with a disability.

Africa, East Asia and Europe : Universities may nominate up to three eligible students. How are applications evaluated?

In Canada and the United State, East Asia and Latin America, essay responses are evaluated in addition to application materials to determine an overall recommendation.

A nominee's status as a member of a historically marginalized group is not considered in the selection of award recipients.

Research should align with Google AI Principles .

Incomplete proposals will not be considered.

How are Google PhD Fellowships given?

Any monetary awards will be paid directly to the Fellow's university for distribution. No overhead should be assessed against them.

What are the intellectual property implications of a Google PhD Fellowship?

Fellowship recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. If that is the case, they are subject to the same intellectual property restrictions as any other Google intern.

Will the Fellowship recipients become employees of Google?

No, Fellowship recipients do not become employees of Google due to receiving the award. The award does not preclude future eligibility for internships or employment opportunities at Google, nor does it increase the chances of obtaining them. If they are interested in working at Google, they are welcome to apply for jobs and go through the same hiring process as any other person.

Can Fellowship recipients also be considered for other Google scholarships?

Yes, Fellowship recipients are eligible for these scholarships .

After award notification, when do the Google PhD Fellowships begin?

After Google PhD Fellowship recipients are notified, the Fellowship is effective starting the following school year.

What is the program application time period?

Applications for the 2024 program will open in March 2024 and close in May 2024 for all regions. Refer to the main Google PhD Fellowship Program page for each region’s application details.

A global awards announcement will be made in September on the Google Research Blog publicly announcing all award recipients.

27 Remote Fellowships for Young Professionals and Recent Graduates

Fellowships provide unique, short-term funded opportunities to gain skills and experience for your career. Although most fellowships are in-person, there are partially and fully remote fellowships for individuals at all stages of their careers. In this article, we list remote fellowships for young professionals and recent graduates.

Eligibility for these remote fellowships varies, but many are open to all levels of education or those already in a professional career. Fellowship areas of interest include social change, environmental sustainability, government, entrepreneurship, and nonprofit leadership development. Additionally, there are opportunities for higher education research, public health, literature, and journalism, and those aimed at traditionally underrepresented groups.

It is crucial you look at all the requirements as some, such as fellowships for nonprofit executives, require the applicant to have an established organization with paid employees already. Regardless of your background, this list of multidisciplinary remote fellowships will allow you to continue working at your current occupation, expand your skill set, network with advanced mentors, potentially be given a stipend, and attend seminars all from the comfort of your home office.

Remote Fellowships for Young Professionals and Recent Graduates

1. bevisioneers fellowship.

The beVisioneers fellowship provides young professionals (aged 16-28 years) the training, resources, and expert support they need to bring their planet-positive projects or idea to life. This remote fellowship seeks young innovators passionately committed to creating positive environmental change in their community or worldwide. beVisioneers Fellows participate in a one-year hybrid learning program designed and implemented by Education Pioneers . The fellowship is a mixed experience, with most content and training in live online sessions and through access to on-demand content. There are no costs to individual fellows. For 2023, the fellowship is open to residents of the following countries: Denmark, Germany, Hungary, India, Poland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. More regions will be included in subsequent years.

2. Civic Digital Fellowship

The Civic Digital Fellowship is a paid, 10-week remote summer fellowship for early-career technologists. Fellows are placed in federal government organizations and work across software engineering, data, design, and product management to deliver policy, improve systems, and strengthen products for the American people. Although this is a remote fellowship, there is a one-week orientation in Washington, DC, where fellows can visit their host office at the beginning of the program.

3. Council Fire Future Leaders Program

The Future Leaders Program (FLP) is for young professionals in the early stages of their careers and graduate or doctorate students passionate about the sustainability field. The Future Leaders Program provides a unique opportunity to work with a world-class global change agency and sustainability consultancy early for contract-based compensation. The FLP opens a critical career pathway for diverse candidates and those historically underrepresented in these fields. Fellows participate in enrichment activities, networking, and mentorship. The FLP is fully remote and highly competitive. Candidates are chosen on a rolling basis, with participation limited to two years.

4. Environmental Justice Climate Equity Fellowship

MobilizeGreen seeks motivated, passionate undergraduate and graduate students and recent graduates to join its innovative Environmental Justice Climate Equity Fellowship Program. This fully remote fellowship program is a paid 10-week virtual fellowship that empowers future leaders of color to help advance equity and environmental justice in their communities. Fellows collaborate, document, and recommend strategies to leverage, expand, and build capacity through project-based climate justice internships in communities nationwide. Fellows work in teams on the following five concentrations within each city: Green Infrastructure and Community Development; Workforce Development; Sustainable Agriculture; Public Health; and Urban Forestry.

5. Global Changemaker Fellowship

The Global Changemaker Fellowship is a 6-month advancement remote fellowship for young professionals to develop a pipeline of Social Change Leaders to solve challenges in their local communities. Global Changemaker Fellows implement their initiatives throughout the program while participating in immersive workshops, training, and mentorship. Fellows get access to global knowledge, community, training, and tools to become more effective collaborators of change. The program seeks young professionals aged 13-30 with an entrepreneurial mindset. Applicants should already be part of an organization with similar mission statements.

6. Yunus & Youth Global Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurs

The Yunus & Youth Global Fellowship for Social Entrepreneurs is a customized 6-month remote fellowship that empowers young professionals to build, develop and expand innovative and economically viable social businesses that contribute to achieving the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Yunus & Youth provides early-stage social business leaders with the tools and training they need to succeed. Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age and hold primary decision-making power in organizations that solve social or sustainability challenges in their community.

7. Global Health Corps U.S. Fellowship

The Global Health Corps U.S. Fellowship identifies diverse, high-potential, emerging public health leaders from various backgrounds in the United States. This 12-month remote fellowship provides skill-building, coaching, mentorship, integration into a global community, and access to networks to deepen fellows’ impact and influence on U.S. health systems. Current public health workers can stay in their organization during the fellowship program. All fellows receive a $1,000 grant for continued learning and leadership development. To cultivate a global perspective, the U.S. fellows engage with the fellows of GHC Sub-Saharan Fellowship through shared workshops and small group discussions throughout the year.

8. Gratitude Network Fellowship

The Gratitude Network Fellowship supports scale-stage social enterprises (nonprofit or for-profit) serving children and youth. Through a year-long leadership development program, the Gratitude Network helps these organizations expand their reach. Fellows are matched and meet monthly with a highly-skilled coach, receive support from expert advisors to help tackle operational and execution issues, and meet regularly by video with their fellow cohort for a leadership roundtable. They are also invited to topical Growth Webinars and the annual Leadership Summit . Applicants must lead a social enterprise that is at least one year old, and the social enterprise must have at least two full-time employees (including the applicant).

9. Great Leaders & Great Biographies Online Fellowship

The Great Leaders & Great Biographies Online Fellowship uses the rigorous study of biographies to investigate broader questions about geopolitics, leadership, and human character. Guest speakers such as scholars and national security leaders will also participate in the seminar. Fellows will have the opportunity to reflect on the role of individual personality in history, what makes for great leadership, and also great biography. Advanced undergraduates, gap-year students, young professionals, and graduate students are all eligible to apply. Each online seminar is capped at 15 fellows. All seminars will meet online via Zoom, with all course materials will be provided.

10. Harrison Middleton University Fellowship in Ideas

The HMU Fellowship in Ideas is a writing and discussion fellowship in the humanities designed for a recent university graduate from any field who has an interest in the humanities, interdisciplinary dialogue, and intellectual and professional enrichment. Except for conference attendance, all HMU Fellowship in Ideas activities may be carried out remotely from any location with adequate telephone and internet access. Applicants must have received a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in any field. Benefits include a $500 stipend, online Socratic discussions, and publication in the HMU blog.

11. Humanities at Hertog Online Seminars

The Humanities at Hertog program is a fully remote fellowship that offers four online seminars centered around an enduring literary work for students seeking an enriching academic experience over winter break. Led by a master teacher, students will plumb classic and contemporary literary works for their insights into fundamental human questions. Undergraduates, gap-year students, young professionals, and graduate students can apply. All seminars meet via Zoom. Fellows receive a small stipend contingent upon participating in their course and completing a brief response paper and evaluation. All course materials are provided.

12. Mellon/SAR Academic Freedom Workshop and Fellowship

The Mellon/SAR Academic Freedom Workshop and Fellowship program provides a research stipend and a supportive professional community for researchers to develop and share related work on academic freedom. This can also include topics related to higher education values leading to a publishable article, new course offering, workshop, webinar, conference presentation, or other identified end product. Throughout the eight-month remote fellowship program, fellows complete their proposed project and participate in regular virtual workshop sessions, during which they will be asked to present their work progress and offer feedback on other fellows’ work. Fellows will receive a stipend of $8,000 to cover research expenses, publication, and related costs.

13. MJ Bear Fellowship

The MJ Bear Fellowship identifies and supports digital journalists under 30 whose work represents the best of digital news. Six fellows from around the world who are up-and-coming journalists and leading innovative digital journalism projects participate in the yearlong, primarily remote fellowship program. Program components include a speaking opportunity at ONA’s annual conference (with an expenses-paid trip), coaching sessions, complimentary membership to ONA for three years, and other opportunities to showcase work and expertise with the ONA community and broader industry.

14. Morgridge Acceleration Program (MAP) Fellowship

The Morgridge Acceleration Program (MAP) Fellowship is a remote fellowship for young professionals that matches nonprofit executives, called MAP Mentors, with emerging leaders, MAP Fellows, looking to create a positive impact while developing professional skill sets and networks. MAP Mentors commit to sharing their expertise, industry knowledge, and professional network with fellows during the program. Fellows remain in their current full-time jobs while dedicating approximately 15 hours a month, or 90 hours throughout the program, toward solving a challenge posed by their mentor. All expenses and experiences associated with the MAP Fellowship are fully funded. After completing the program, fellows are invited to apply for an exclusive grant of up to $50,000 to continue growing their nonprofit organization.

15. NPR Next Gen Radio

Next Generation Radio is a 5-day, audio-focused, digital journalism project. Projects are hybrid (remote and in-person), designed to allow competitively selected participants to learn how to report and produce a non-narrated audio piece and a companion multimedia story. Those chosen for the program are paired with a professional journalist who serves as their mentor for the week and is paid a stipend for their work. Successful applicants have some qualitative experience with digital media. You do not need to be an enrolled student to apply. You can apply for a project at any time.

16. Obama Foundation Leaders Program

The Obama Foundation Leaders program is a 6-month, fully remote fellowship for young professionals. This non-residential leadership development program seeks to inspire, empower, and connect emerging leaders worldwide. During their program experience, emerging leaders, ages 24 through 45, build a strong support community founded on a shared commitment to values-based leadership, as President and Mrs. Obama demonstrated. Leaders receive opportunities to meet virtually in breakout groups, are paired with an executive coach to help them clarify and build out their individual goals, and participate in an in-person convening. Leaders must have at least three years of demonstrated impact.

17. OMNI Institute Research Fellowship Program

The OMNI Institute Research Fellowship Program is a two-year program for young professionals who are recent undergraduates with a BA/BS degree and are passionate about solving pressing social challenges. Fellows serve as research assistants, an entry-level social sciences research and evaluation position with an annual salary of $50,000 plus full benefits. The position is remote-flexible and within the continental U.S. states. Applicants with diverse identities and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

18. PEN America Emerging Voices Fellowship

The PEN America Emerging Voices Fellowship is a remote fellowship that offers a 5-month immersive mentorship program for early-career writers from traditionally underrepresented communities in the publishing world. The program is committed to cultivating the careers of Black writers and serves writers who identify as Indigenous, persons of color, LGBTQ+, immigrants, writers with disabilities, and those living outside of urban centers. Fellows are given one-on-one mentorship, introduced to publishers and agents, and participate in workshops to build their writing skillset. A stipend of $7,000 is provided. Although U.S. residency or citizenship is not required, fellows must reside in the United States at the time of applying for and during the duration of the fellowship. Applicants cannot be a recipient of an advanced degree in fiction, creative nonfiction, or poetry.

19. Major League Hacking (MLH) Fellowship

The MLH Fellowship is a fully remote 12-week internship alternative for aspiring software engineers where they earn a stipend and learn to collaborate on real open-source projects with peers and engineers from top companies. Instead of interning at a single company, on the Open Source Track, you’ll contribute to the type of Open Source projects that every company depends on. The MLH Fellowship runs year-round with batches starting every few months. This program is open to both current and non-students with any educational background. MLH expressly invites & encourages people who identify as women, non-binary, Black/African American, or Latin@ to apply.

20. Second Nature Fellows Program

Second Nature Fellows Program fosters the development of decarbonization, resilience, and climate justice researchers and practitioners. Second Nature Fellows work with the nation’s premier colleges and universities leading on climate action. This year-long remote fellowship program provides talented and diverse individuals with a unique experience working in a small nonprofit team setting. Fellows get direct access and exposure to varied stakeholders and partners to support their pursuit of influential and impactful careers. These positions are 100% remote and designed to be challenging and build desired skill sets.

21. Tarbell Fellowship For Early Career Journalists

The Tarbell Fellowship for Early Career Journalists is a one-year, remote fellowship opportunity to do great journalism, covering emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence (AI) topics. Fellows receive a stipend of up to $50,000 to support 9-month placements at major publications and independent freelance reporting. The program incorporates expert speakers, feedback & mentorship from experienced journalists, extensive training on AI, and a two-week, fully covered journalism summit in Oxford.

22. Marcellus Policy Fellowship

The John Quincy Adams Society offers the Marcellus Policy Fellowship to nurture future U.S. foreign policy leaders. The fellowship equips fellows with policy writing skills and the ability to promote ideas. Fellows craft policy papers, memos, and op-eds, enhancing their competitiveness in the foreign policy arena. The fellowship held twice a year with 8-12 participants per cohort, is open to students and early-career professionals in foreign policy. Candidates pursuing careers in U.S. national security policy across various sectors are eligible, regardless of U.S. citizenship. Fellows receive a $750 stipend.

23. The Ripple Fellowship

The Ripple Fellowship is a fully funded, 9-month educational program for young adults ages 18-24. With a comprehensive curriculum, immersive travel experiences, and 1:1 mentorship, The Ripple Fellowship will mold impactful social entrepreneurs who will go on to create lasting change in their communities. Fellows will have two domestic travel experiences, engage in a weekly online curriculum facilitated by a variety of experts and changemakers, be paired with a mentor, construct a business plan that supports people and the planet, and participate in a formal incentivized business pitch to The Ripple Center community at large.

24. Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Fellowship

The Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Fellowship program is open for recent graduates, mid-career alums, and former Historically Black Colleges and Universities students. The fellows will spend a year in reporting, audience engagement, and product or technology roles with full-time salaries and benefits. Fellows will receive on-the-job training, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. Eligible candidates also should have relevant experience in their chosen fellowship track, and a genuine interest in growing their career in journalism. Fellowship positions are remote so fellows can reside anywhere in the United States. Fellows receive a salary of $70,000-$75,000 depending on the fellowship track they are selected for.

25. Venture Fellow Program

The Venture Fellow Program provides individuals with a Bachelor’s degree exposure to venture capital. Fellows experience the entire lifecycle of a venture fund: raising capital, investor relations, deal sourcing, diligence, and making investments. No prior experience in venture capital is required. Venture Fellows receive professional training, ongoing and regularly scheduled mentorship, and a unique, hands-on venture capital experience. The fellowship is for one year and can be completed remotely. Applications from students who have graduated from universities affiliated with Alumni Ventures are preferred, although not required.

26. Wild Gift Fellowship

The Wild Gift Fellowship is a mostly remote fellowship that offers wilderness-based experiences designed to provide young entrepreneurs with leadership skills, community, and connection to the outdoors. Fellows receive a $2,500 stipend, a 3-week backpacking trip (May), and six months of virtual programming (April-November). Eligible applicants have launched (or are ready to launch) a social or environmental venture and are between the ages of 21-35. The Wild Gift selects social and environmental entrepreneurs who have a breakthrough idea and demonstrate the ability to grow a sustainable enterprise, execute a business plan, and significantly impact the problem they are trying to solve.

27. America’s Future Writing Fellows Program

The America’s Future Writing Fellows Program is for aspiring political writers. The fellowship offers small-group writing workshops where fellows can dive in deep with instructors and get personalized feedback over six evening sessions, whether in person or remotely. The Washington, DC-based fellowship is tailored for aspiring writers interested in covering issues and publishing in outlets surrounding our nation’s capital. The state-based fellowship is held remotely and is designed for writers outside the DC area. Both fellowship formats allow connecting with well-known writers in their sessions.

Funding and aid: Graduate funding and aid

At the graduate level, financial aid is largely decentralized, as available funds are managed directly by departments.

Funding is usually available from each individual department to support doctoral students for the duration of their time at MIT. Typically, at the time of admission, doctoral students receive offers of funding in the form of research and teaching appointments or fellowships, which cover the cost of full tuition and health insurance, and provide a salary or stipend. Funding for master-level students is more limited, and depends greatly on the program of study , so students may be required to seek their own sources of funding or utilize student loans .

Graduate funding may take the form of research, instructor, and teaching assistantships, fellowships, traineeships, scholarships, grants, and/or other forms of employment , such as working as a resident advisor in an undergraduate residence.

Please note: Applicants are considered for funding after they have been accepted into a graduate program. There is no separate application for financial aid prior to admission for any program of study.

Funding for students in need

MIT provides assistance to graduate students experiencing financial hardships , has established new ranges to stipends and changes to health insurance rates and plan benefits, and offers additional health and well-being support resources .

Remote Sensing PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

Remote Sensing is the practice of observing geographical phenomena from afar. It is revolutionising the field of Geography by reducing the need for manual fieldwork and allowing geographers to gather data about dangerous or inaccessible regions.

As a PhD candidate in Remote Sensing, you might focus on collecting and analysing data about a particular region, type of terrain or geographical phenomenon. You could also work on developing or improving remote sensing technologies.

What’s it like to study a PhD in Remote Sensing?

You’ll be assigned a supervisory team that will guide you through the completion of an extended dissertation. Your final thesis should make a significant original contribution to the field.

Possible research areas include:

• Automated crater detection and classification
• Monitoring wildfire emissions
• Carbon capture
• Identifying geohazards
• Semi-autonomous planetary exploration
• Arctic surveillance
• Weather forecasting

Your research might involve using sensors carried by planes, UAVs, satellites or drones. These sensors may have technological capabilities such as Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) or Sound Navigation Ranging (Sonar).

Alongside your research, you may be required to attend additional training in fundamental areas such as satellite data and machine learning. You may also have the chance to present at academic conferences and publish your work in journals.

There are a number of advertised projects available in Remote Sensing, but many candidates will design their own project.

PhD in Remote Sensing Systems entry requirements

To apply for a PhD in Remote Sensing, you’ll usually need a good upper-second class Bachelors degree in a relevant subject area. A Masters degree may sometimes be required. It’s worth noting that applications are considered on a case-by-case basis and a postgraduate qualification will often be an advantage even if is not compulsory.

PhD in Remote Sensing funding options

Depending on your specific focus, PhD projects in Remote Sensing might be funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Council (EPRSC) or the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). Research Councils provide studentships that cover your tuition fees and living expenses.

Full studentships are very competitive, so many students will need to self-fund their PhD. There are numerous options for candidates taking this route, including the UK government’s doctoral loan , support from charities or trusts , and part-time employment .
