Best Online Drivers Ed Courses in Georgia

  • Written By Chris Teague

New drivers in the state of Georgia can take driver education classes in-person or online . Driver education courses must be certified by the Department of Driver Services. These classes consist of two parts and are known as "30 and 6". This stands for 30 hours of classroom time, and 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training.

Georgia also requires new drivers to log 40 hours of driving practice. At least 6 of those hours need to be done at night. This can be done either with a state-approved instructor or with a parent using the DDS Parent/Teen Driving Guide . (We hope this goes without saying, but this part can't be done online and must be done in an actual car.) Together, these two parts are known as "Joshua's Law".

Online Drivers Ed Programs in Georgia

Safe2Drive - Safe2Drive is a national company that offers state-compliant training across the country. In Georgia, the program costs just $24.95 , and comes with the ability to access 24 hours a day from any device. The course is laid out in an easy step-by-step format that makes tracking progress very easy. This program recommends the use of the Parent/Teen driving guide to complete the hands-on portion of training.

Aceable - One of the highest-rated course providers in the country (98% positive reviews on Trustpilot), Aceable's Georgia course provides the same type of bite-sized, entertaining course content that you'll find in the other states it provides courses for. One of the things people like most about Aceable is how compatible its courses are with mobile devices .

Awesome Driving School - Don't let the name fool you, Awesome Driving School is just as rigorous as the other, non-awesome programs. The $29.95 training can be done from any computer, tablet, or mobile device, and comes with a 100 percent pass rate guarantee. It can also be completed at any time of day, which makes it ideal for after school use. Awesome Driving School also offers programs for traffic violation training and practice permit tests.

Advance Driving Academy - Advance Driving Academy offers online training for $69, but unlike some of the others on our list, the program has to be completed from a desktop computer. The benefit of using this program is that the company offers the ability to mix online and in-person training to allow the new driver to complete their entire "30 and 6" curriculum for one price ($399).

Just Drive Right - Just Drive Right offers programs for teens and adults that start at $29.95 for online training. The training can be completed at any pace and can be used until the new driver passes the course. The company offers a mixed online and in-person program that runs $295, and can be completed with a female trainer, if requested.

DriversEd.com - In addition to offering one of the lowest-priced online courses to meet Joshua's Law requirements in the state of Georgia, DriversEd.com also includes unlimited practice tests and even offers in-car training (exclusively in Georgia, California and Texas).

Just Driver Training - Just Driver Training has a wide variety of courses for adults, teens, and remedial needs. Its online program can be taken at any time and at any pace. The online course starts at $95. Training is offered with an audio option for people that like to take notes, and the company has support staff on hand to help with technical difficulties.

IMPROVLearning - Another option for students in Georgia is IMPROVLearning , an online company that offers drivers education and traffic school courses. The company offers a comical, entertaining take on what is normally a very dry subject.

Georgia’s motor vehicle department has a website that lists all available online and in-person training programs.

At the age of 15, drivers can get a Georgia Instructional Permit (CP). A year and a day later, they can apply for a provisional driver’s license.

Are there restrictions on provisional driver's licenses in Georgia?

Yes. On a provisional license, you cannot drive between midnight and 5 AM. Only immediate family members may ride in the vehicle with the new driver for the first six months. Only one passenger under the age of 21 may ride in the vehicle with the new driver for the second six months. After one year, only three passengers may ride in the vehicle.

How much does driver's ed cost in Georgia?

Online courses vary between $29.95 and $95 and offer various levels of online instruction, but that doesn’t take into account the required driving instruction time. Georgia requires that all 16-year-olds applying for a license complete 40 hours of supervised driving, 6 hours of which must be at night.

Can I avoid driver's ed completely?

Yes, but not at the age of 16. If the applicant has not completed a certified Georgia Driver Training/ Driver Education course , he/she cannot obtain a Class D Provisional License until age 17. (Note this license carries restrictions including times of day and number of passengers.) No one younger than 18 can get a Class C Driver’s License.

What is a Joshua's Law course & Why Do I Need it?

Joshua's Law refers to measures put in place by the Georgia DDS to ensure that all first-time teen drivers between 15 and 17 years old have the proper training to earn a Georgia drivers license. Any Georgia drivers ed course–classroom or online–has to be approved by the DDS as fully compliant with Joshua's Law. If you're a Georgia teen 15-17 years old, you are legally required to take a drivers ed course in order to apply for a license. If you're 18 or older, a drivers ed course isn't mandatory - but it's still a good idea if you're foggy on the basics of driving and traffic knowledge.

I Drive Safely's online Georgia drivers ed is 100% approved as a 30-hour Joshua's Law driver education course for all teen drivers. So you can rest assured you'll meet every state requirement you need in order to earn your permit and hit the roads!

What To Expect In The Behind-The-Wheel Driving Lessons

The Driver’s Ed Car

The college will provide a vehicle for students to use during their lessons. They are 2015 Kia Optimas, a 4-door sedan. Each vehicle is wrapped in “Student Driver” graphics to make other drivers aware that training is in progress.  The vehicles are equipped with video monitoring capabilities to ensure the safety of all participants.

6-Hour Driving Lessons

Behind-the-wheel driver training lessons are available via one-on-one appointments and are 2 hours long. The Department of Driver Services requires that parents/guardians invest at least 40 hours of behind-the-wheel driving practice with their teens before taking their road test to get their license.

Training Lesson 1:  The instructor will take the student to begin verifying the skills listed above are satisfactory and then start practice with parallel parking, turnabouts, and a very structured driving route to provide exposure ranging from light traffic to moderate traffic.

Training Lesson 2: When students arrive for the second lesson, they can expect longer exposure to moderate traffic and an introduction to parkways and highways and apply what was learned during lesson two.

Training Lesson 3: The final training will include a review of the previous lessons, more prolonged exposure to moderate traffic, and an introduction to interstate driving. Note: Students will be practicing entering and exiting off Interstate 16. Practice with a parent/guardian before this lesson is recommended.

Our focus is to assist your student with the more difficult driving skills since our program only provides 6-hours of behind-the-wheel training. By the time your student reaches their first behind-the-wheel training session with the college, they will need to be able to complete the following skills:

  • Basic driver preparation
  • Accelerating and slowing down smoothly
  • Turning right at intersections
  • Turning left at intersections

How to Take a Drivers Education Course in Georgia

Drivers education in Georgia is mandatory for teens who are 15 and 16 years of age. These young motorists must complete 30 hours of drivers ed instruction and either six hours of behind-the-wheel training with an additional 30 hours of supervised driving or 40 hours of supervised driving. New motorists can register to complete drivers ed online or in a classroom. Once enrolled, they will learn about proper automobile maintenance and operation.

A GA teen driving school will provide teens with all the knowledge they need to stay safe on the road. Drivers ed classes not only teach teen motorists about road rules and proper driving techniques, but also the information they need to pass the written permit test. Students must pass the drivers ed test in order to apply for the instructional permit . Keep reading below to learn more details about the driver education course process in Georgia.

Who needs to take drivers ed in Georgia?

Drivers ed in Georgia is a requirement for teen drivers who are younger than 17 years of age. Young motorists can enroll at 15 years of age. Completion of a drivers education course is not required for residents older than 17 years of age. However, all motorists must accumulate at least 40 hours of supervised driving, six of which must be completed at night, before they can apply for an unrestricted license .

Types of Drivers Ed Classes in Georgia

Drivers ed classes in Georgia are available both online and in-person. All meet the GA Department of Driver Services (DDS) requirement of 30 hours of drivers education instruction. Students can also choose how they acquire their driver training: at a DDS-approved school with an instructor or at home with a parent. Teens can also elect to complete the parent-teen driving guide in addition to completing six hours of training at an approved drivers ed school.

Georgia Online Drivers Ed vs. In-Person Courses

Completing drivers ed online in GA can be beneficial for some teens more than others. An online drivers ed course allows students to complete their 30 hours as quickly as they are able to. On the other hand, a classroom drivers education class is usually scheduled ahead of time and may take several days or weeks depending on the curriculum.

Moreover, online drivers education classes allow self-directed students to progress at their own pace while classrooms encourage discussion with peers. Teens who prefer to complete their drivers education online can easily register on DriversEd.com. This provider has a 99.5 percent permit exam pass rate and free unlimited practice tests. DriversEd.com even offers behind-the-wheel training for Georgia residents.

What will you learn in a Georgia drivers ed school?

A drivers ed school in GA provides teens with all the information they need to pass their permit test and become safe drivers. Teens will learn about the licensing process and the steps they need to take after completing drivers ed classes. In addition, students will gain knowledge about:

  • Road signs and signals.
  • Driving in various weather conditions.
  • Handling auto accidents.
  • Proper driving techniques.

Georgia Drivers Education Requirements

Georgia driver education requirements vary depending on the age of the prospective license holder. The youngest a resident can begin a drivers ed course is 15 years of age. These motorists must complete:

  • 30 hours of classroom instruction.
  • 40 hours of supervised driving.
  • Six hours of supervised nighttime driving.

They may also complete six hours of behind-the-wheel training at an approved teen driving school. Furthermore, they must be enrolled in school and have parent or guardian sign their application form before they can acquire a permit. Teen motorists who are 16 years of age must meet the same requirements.

Teen drivers ed requirements change slightly once motorists reach 17 years of age. Unlike younger drivers, they do not have to show proof of completion of a drivers education course. At 18 years of age, motorists can apply for their full Class C driving license without showing proof of school enrollment or completion of drivers ed school. However, they must sign an affidavit confirming that they have 40 hours of driving experience, six of which were completed during night time hours.

Benefits of a Georgia Driver Education Course

There are several benefits to enrolling in a drivers education course in Georgia. First, new motorists will learn the proper skills and techniques to safely operate a vehicle and manage various auto-related scenarios. As a result, they will be less likely to be victims in accidents or receive citations for breaking the law .

Furthermore, completing drivers ed may earn certain motorists a discount on their car insurance. However, this depends on policy and insurer. Therefore, drivers must check with their car insurance company to ensure that they qualify.

How to Enroll in a Georgia Driver Ed School

In order to enroll in a GA drivers ed school, prospective motorists must first find a DDS-approved school to complete their 30-hour instructional course. The official state DDS website provides a list of accepted drivers education schools. These include:

  • Public and private high schools.
  • Online providers.
  • Private companies.

Teens should check if their high school offers free drivers education classes prior to considering third-party options. However, many students prefer to complete their teen drivers ed online. One accepted online provider, DriversEd.com, allows new motorists to easily register for a class. Through DriversEd.com, teens can complete their drivers ed course at their own pace, even on their phones. They have access to unlimited practice tests and even have the option to purchase professional driving lessons.

Georgia DMV Drivers Ed Certificates

A Georgia drivers ed certificate must be submitted to the DMV when applying for an instructional permit. Teens younger than 17 years of age will not be allowed to acquire their permit without proof that they completed their drivers education. Motorist who register online with DriversEd.com will be able to receive their certificate for free within 24 hours of completing their GA drivers education classes.

Drivers Ed for New Georgia Residents

GA drivers ed may be required for new residents, especially if they already hold a permit from another state. All new teen motorists must surrender their out-of-state permit and meet the Georgia requirements for an instructional permit. It may be necessary to complete a GA drivers ed course if driving requirements were different in the teen’s previous state.

Georgia Drivers Ed vs. Traffic School

Many residents confuse Georgia drivers ed and traffic school although they have many differences. Drivers education school is for inexperienced motorists who have never held a license. On the other hand, traffic school is for licensed motorists who either elected or were court-ordered to take a course on driver improvement. Furthermore, a driver education program in Georgia takes longer to complete than a traffic school course and covers topics in more detail.

Georgia Driver Education Fees

Drivers ed prices in GA vary based on provider and type of course. Online drivers ed courses are typically cheaper than in-person classes at $20 compared to $149, respectively. However, students may be able to enroll in free drivers ed classes if they register with their local high school.

Was extremely satisfied with the service received here! Instructors were EXACTLY what the younger generation needs; they were patient and did not pull out any stops with my girls! My 2 daughters took this course at the same time and learned some things here that they apparently "didn't know". Thanks again for the superior service!

How to Become a Certified Teacher in Georgia

In general, there are two routes available to obtain your educator certification in Georgia and begin teaching in the classroom.

The Traditional Pathway

Regardless of whether you hold a bachelor’s degree, the traditional path to becoming a teacher involves two routes.

Earn a bachelor’s degree in education. -OR- Complete a master’s degree to secure initial licensure/certification.

You’ll likely also need:

  • A passing score, if applicable, on the content assessment for the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE)
  • A passing score on the Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment
  • To satisfy course requirements for identifying and educating exceptional children

The Alternative Pathway

The alternative route to teacher certification in Georgia is designed for individuals who aspire to become teachers and and have already obtained a bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year university in the United States in a field outside of education.

Unlike traditional pathways, these career changers do not need to pursue another bachelor’s degree in education to enter the teaching profession. Instead, they have the option to enroll in a teacher preparation program like Moreland University’s TEACH-NOW , which can be completed in as little as nine months. Alternatively, they can pursue a master’s degree in education within a twelve-month timeframe to meet the eligibility requirements for teacher certification. Select requirements for pursuing an alternative teaching pathway may include:

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • A passing score on the GACE content assessment (if applicable)
  • Completion of the Georgia Educator Ethics Assessment

Georgia superintendent says Black studies course can be taught after legal opinion

Associated Press

ATLANTA – Georgia’s Superintendent of Schools Richard Woods now says school districts may teach a new Advanced Placement course in African American Studies after all, now that Georgia's attorney general said the state's law against teaching divisive racial concepts specifically exempts such college-level courses.

Woods said Wednesday that a letter from Attorney General Chris Carr to a Republican state lawmaker “completed the clarification process” for him. Woods had cited the law in refusing to recommend the course be added to the state's course catalog.

Woods, an elected Republican, said the state will now consider all AP and similar college-level courses to be automatically adopted. This means that after weeks of controversy, Woods won't have to recommend the African American studies course be officially adopted, and members of the state Board of Education won't have to vote on the question.

“In compliance with this opinion, the AP African American Studies course will be added to the state-funded course catalog effective immediately,” Woods said, although he said there would be a disclaimer saying the state hadn't reviewed the material.

Attorney General Chris Carr, a Republican, confirmed Friday in a letter to state Rep. Will Wade that Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and dual-enrollment courses are explicitly exempted from the law, which Wade and other critics of Woods’ decision had pointed out. Wade, a Dawsonville Republican, wrote the 2022 measure.

“I'm excited that students who want to seek challenging and rigorous courses will have the ability to do so,” Wade said Wednesday.

Woods' evolving positions on the question led some districts to drop their plans to teach it without formal state approval. A lack of state approval could influence state funding and the credit students get when applying for college scholarships.

Woods also faced pointed questions from Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, but the most withering fire came from Democrats and others who called it a racist attempt to keep public schools from teaching the full history of African Americans.

“Big picture, I am glad we have finally gotten to this point, even if the journey was long, convoluted and consequential,” said state Rep. Jasmine Clark, a Lilburn Democrat. But she said Woods had still done damage. “The disparate treatment of a course of study about Black history and the message it sent to Black students and families is still disheartening.”

The Advanced Placement course drew national scrutiny in 2023 when Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis said he would ban the course . South Carolina followed this June, refusing state approval while saying that individual districts could still offer it.

The College Board is a nonprofit testing entity that offers Advanced Placement courses across the academic spectrum. Students who score well on an exam can usually earn college credit. The board has said the course is based on academic scholarship and doesn't seek to indoctrinate students.

Carr's letter notes that the law requires teachers to instruct “in a professionally and academically appropriate manner and without espousing personal political beliefs.” But other than that, he noted the law's text specifically exempts AP courses.

“Other than those limitations, the statutory language as enacted excludes advanced placement, international baccalaureate and dual enrollment coursework by its express terms,” Carr wrote.

Woods had been saying that districts could teach the AP material and get state money by listing it as an introductory African American studies course approved by the state in 2020. Woods took that position after earlier saying districts would have to teach the course using only local tax money . But he also declared that he believed the course was illegal and that districts could expose themselves to legal challenges by using the introductory course to teach the AP material.

Georgia’s 2022 ban on teaching divisive racial concepts in schools, based on a now-repealed executive order from former President Donald Trump, prohibits claims that the U.S. is “fundamentally or systematically racist." It mandates that no student “should feel discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress because of his or her race.” So far, 18 states have passed such bans.

Opponents of the divisive concepts law said the episode proves how harmful it is. Andrea Young, the executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Georgia, said other public school students who don't take AP courses “should also have access to robust, accurate curricula without politically-driven interference.”

Woods, who is white, said he was particularly concerned about how the course presents the concept of intersectionality. That's a framework for understanding the effects of overlapping systems of discrimination or disadvantage. For example, Black women may face compounding disadvantages because of their race and gender. Intersectionality is one of 74 required topics in the course.

The Atlanta, DeKalb County and Cobb County school districts have all said they will offer the course in some high schools with or without Woods' approval. Gwinnett County, the state's largest district, had said it wouldn't offer it. After Woods' ruling Wednesday, Gwinnett County said its six high schools that had planned to teach the course would try to readjust schedules to allow the course to go ahead. School started Monday in Gwinnett County.
