Becoming Queen

biography of queen jetsun pema

On 13th October 2011, Jetsun Pema was crowned the Queen of Bhutan at age 21 upon marrying King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck who was 31 years old then. This auspicious occasion also makes her the world's youngest queen.

A chance encounter 23 years ago where the two met at a picnic when she was just 7 and the Crown Prince was 17 has led to the makings of what was deemed as a 'fairy-tale love story' between King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema.

The royal wedding was held in a simple traditional Bhutanese style and took place in the majestic fortress, the Palace of Great Happiness in Punakha, the country's ancient capital. Punakha Dzong is located two hours away from Thimphu and it's one of the most beautiful dzongs in the country.

Roles and Responsibilities

After becoming the Queen of Bhutan, Jetsun Pema remains very down to earth and is often seen interacting with the locals. She has accompanied her husband on his official visits abroad as well as to remote parts of the country.

Aside from assisting King Jigme Khesar in his royal duties, Her Majesty is also a champion of various social causes in the country. She is the president of the Bhutan Red Cross Society and the United Nations Environment Program Ozone Ambassador. She is also the Royal Patron of the environment agencies such as National Environment Commission, Royal Society for Protection of Nature and Clean Bhutan as well as other government and non-government agencies on conservation, waste management, and other environmental matters.

Her Majesty is also an advocate for persons with disabilities where she works closely with the government, schools, and NGOs that provide services to enable persons with disabilities to live better lives. Apart from that, she also ensures that children has access to better healthcare and education. Her Majesty is also Royal Patron of the Bhutan Kidney Foundation. Her Majesty's social welfare projects are administered through the Queen's Project such as One Gewog One Product (OGOP) project which helps farmers to boost their income by supporting the production, packaging and marketing of the local produce by the rural communities.

In 2015, there is also a 150-bedded women and child hospital,  Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Mother and Child Hospital  built in honour of Her Majesty. The hospital in Thimphu will cater to all maternal related health services. Additionally, Her Majesty also initiated the first Epidural Labour Analgesia Services in Bhutan for women who would like to opt for some pain relief during labour.

The couple — who have a 1-year-old son, Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck — have both studied in England, share a love of art, and were once dubbed the Will and Kate of The Himalayas .

Speaking about his wife, the king once told local reporters: "I have been waiting for quite some time to get married. But it doesn't matter when you get married as long as it is to the right person. I am certain I am married to the right person."

Meet Jetsun Pema, the youngest queen on the planet.

Before taking the throne, the queen attended Regent's College in London, where she studied international relations, psychology, and art history. The couple apparently share a love of art.

The popular king, also a young monarch, studied at Oxford University.

More than 50,000 Bhutanese citizens attended the final day of wedding celebrations at Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu.

Their union has been described as a love marriage, with Pema portrayed as a "commoner by the secretariat. The Washington Post reported that "in one version of events, the two met at a picnic when she was 7 and he was 17; she reportedly came up to him and gave him a hug."

6 November 2017, Thimphu: Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen graced a celebration to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Montreal Protocol- a United Nations treaty to take steps to protect the ozone layer. Dignitaries and senior officials from the government, UN and private sector also attended the event, which organized by National Environment Commission (NEC). The Montreal Protocol has been the most successful environment treaty of the United Nations, and the only one to receive universal endorsement- where 197 member states unanimously came together to phasing out chemicals that were damaging the Ozone Layer. As a result, more than 99 percent of nearly 100 ozone-depleting chemicals have been phased out, and this has also significantly contributed to climate change mitigation. Protecting the Ozone Layer remains an important endeavor, and these efforts have been bolstered by Her Majesty’s support as the UNEP Ozone Ambassador. The lesson from the success Protocol is being used in efforts to achieve similar collective action for climate change today. A Coffee Table book on 25 Years of Partnership for Environment Conservation, documenting the achievements of the last 25 years, was launched during the event. Refrigeration and Air Condition equipment (RAC) was also handed over to Ministry of Labour and Human Resources to assist the RAC curriculum. Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Jetsun Pema Wangchuck are the current king and queen of the Kingdom of Bhutan, and the young couple share a story unlike any other

biography of queen jetsun pema

At the age of 7, little Jetsun Pema encountered young Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck at a picnic. The young lady was so intrigued by the fine young man that she asked him to marry her. Unbeknown to her, the innocent proposal had secured a place at the young prince’s heart, and he promised to marry her once they found themselves single and in love.

Little did they know that fate had other plans in store. After his father’s abdication in 2008, the 28-year-old Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuk ascended the throne, taking the title of King of Bhutan as well as the youngest reigning monarch in the world. Three years later and 14 years after their first encounter, King Khesar married 21-year-old Jetsun Pema in a lavish wedding ceremony regarded as Bhutan’s largest media event to date, making his bride the youngest queen consort in the world. Queen Jetsun, a striking natural beauty famous for her impeccable fashion sense, had been known to keep her make-up to a bare minimum, and her wedding day was no exception.

Khesar, the eldest son of the fourth reigning monarch, Jigme Singye Wangchuk, and his third wife, Tshering Yangdon, concluded his Foreign Service Programme and International Relations degree at the University of Oxford. Meanwhile, Pema, a straight-A student at school, earned her degree in Psychology with minors in International Relations and Art History from Regent’s College, London.

Like his father, Khesar is known for his humanitarian efforts and humility, which have won over the nation, earning him the nickname of The People’s King, although the landlocked country, known as “Druykul”, or Land of Dragons in Bhutanese, refers to its ruler as “Druk Gyalpo”, or King of the Dragons.

King and Queen of Bhutan mark ten years of marriage

biography of queen jetsun pema

The King met Jetsun Pema, who comes from the country’s elite, when she was around seven-years-old, and he was 17. Years later, they fell in love and became engaged.

He announced his upcoming marriage during the opening of Parliament in 2011. His Majesty then described his bride:

“N ow, many will have their own idea of what a Queen should be like—that she should be uniquely beautiful, intelligent and graceful. I think with experience and time, one can grow into a dynamic person in any walk of life with the right effort. For the Queen, what is most important is that at all times, as an individual, she must be a good human being, and as Queen, she must be unwavering in her commitment to serve the People and Country. As my Queen, I have found such a person and her name is Jetsun Pema. While she is young, she is warm and kind in heart and character. These qualities together with the wisdom that will come with age and experience will make her a great servant to the nation.”

King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck married Jetsun Pema on 13 October 2011 at the administration centre, Punakha Dzong, in Punakha. The pair wed in a traditional Buddhist ceremony and had received blessings from the holy relic of Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal ahead of their wedding.

Astrologers set the time of the wedding, and the ceremony began at 8:20 in the morning. The King wore the same outfit his father and grandfather wore at their weddings – a patterned silk yellow gho that featured roses. Jetsun Pema wore a kira (the national dress for Bhutanese women woven from raw silk); she wore a yellow tego (jacket) over her red, yellow, green and white kira.

During the service, King Jigme Khesar received five silk scarves in five colours (Dar Na Nga) and the Raven Crown of his family’s dynasty. His Majesty received the Dar Na Nga for Jetsun Pema next and gave it to her with the Phoenix Crown of the Queen of Bhutan. Afterwards, there was a formal declaration of Jetsun Pema as the Queen of Bhutan.

This was followed by the Tashi Ngasoel ceremony held at Grand Kuenra. Ngoedrup Langwa prayers were chanted by the Je Khenpo (head monk) for virtues of the spiritual and physical world. The King and new Queen then received symbolic gifts from civil and religious authorities before a formal presentation was held of congratulations. Public celebrations were then held in Punakha.

Public celebrations took place for several days in Bhutan. The Bhutanese government declared 13-15 October as national holidays, and the King and Queen greeted people in the capital of Thimphu on the 14th. The following day they attended a public celebration at the Changlimithang Stadium in the city.

After the ceremony, the King said: “I have been waiting for quite some time to get married. But it doesn’t matter when you get married as long as it is to the right person. I am certain I am married to the right person.”

Unlike European royal weddings, foreign royals were not in attendance. The Bhutanese Royal Family attended alongside government members, friends and family of the couple, Indian dignitaries and some Westerners.

The couple also held a Hindu ceremony on 17 October out of respect for Bhutanese Hindus. They met many Bhutanese Hindus and the head of the Bhutanese Hindu community. They also donated money for a new Hindu temple and for Hindus in Bhutan.

King Jigme Khesar and Queen Jetsun Pema later honeymooned in India.
