19 Activity Ideas For Precise Proofreading

February 9, 2023 //  by  Rebecca Przy

Proofreading and editing are important parts of the writing process. When I start writing something, my initial priority is the content. I save the finetuning of spelling, punctuation, and grammar for the final stages. Proofreading is key for this!

As your students begin learning how to write; from journal entries to essays, incorporating proofreading is a crucial component for clear and effective writing. Here are 19 activity ideas for students of all ages to practice their proofreading skills!

1. Daily Proofreading Practice (K – Grade 2)

The more your students practice, the better their proofreading abilities will be. Here are some pre-made writing slips which will encourage younger students to practice their capitalization, spelling, punctuation, and grammar rules.

3. Editing Passages: Whole Class Activity (Grades 1 – 6)

Here’s a great editing practice for the whole class. The goal is to identify mistakes in a written passage on the board. You can throw a ball to a student who must identify an error within a given time limit. If they cannot, a new student tries.

5. Proofreading: The Beach (Grades 2 – 4)

If your students aren’t big into basketball, you could try this passage about the beach. These short paragraphs make excellent proofreading practice for younger elementary students.

6. Proofreading Cards (Grades 3 – 5)

This proofreading activity includes 20 cards with different spelling or grammar errors. Your students can examine the sentences, record their corrections on the answer sheet, and then compare them with their peers!

11. Musical Papers: Peer Editing Activity (Grades 5 – 9)

You’ve probably heard of musical chairs, but what about musical papers? Students walk around each others’ tables while music is playing. Once the music stops, your students can stop and edit the work at the nearest desk. Each round can involve different aspects of proofreading.

12. Spell Checker Worksheet (Grades 6 – 8)

Incorrect spelling is such a common error in my students’ writing. Practicing spelling can improve your students’ editing skills and make for a more efficient writing process. These worksheets contain a mix of correct and incorrect commonly misspelled words for your students to correct.

13. Proofread Celebrity Social Media (Grade 6 – 9)

It might be more fun to practice proofreading using a celebrity’s casual social media posts versus more formal writing. In this activity, your students can correct and re-write the social media posts. Then, they can provide the reasoning behind their edits.

Learn More: Presto Plans

14. Proofread Music Lyrics (Grades 7 – 10)

Like social media posts, the music that these celebrities make can also contain various grammatical errors. Similar to the last activity, your students can revise the lyrics and then explain their revisions.

Super Teacher Worksheets Review—Is There A Better Alternative?

super teacher worksheets proofreading

In 2007, Tim Weibel had been an elementary school teacher for seven years. He realized he couldn’t find an online source of teaching materials that would fully fit his teaching needs. Based in Tonawanda, NY, Weibel founded three websites for teaching materials, one of which is Super Teacher Worksheet s.

Today, Super Teacher Worksheets has over 10,000 worksheets for kindergarten and elementary students, as well as a worksheet generator you can use to produce your own.

Super Teacher Worksheets Key Features

When you first visit the Super Teacher Worksheets website , the first thing you’ll notice is that the design and navigational system show its age (it is a 15-year-old website). If you can put the lack of a modern layout and an easy-to-use UI aside, you’ll find thousands of worksheets, most of which meet the Common Core standards.

If you sign up, you’ll be able to enjoy:

  • Various worksheets
  • Worksheet generators
  • A good value-for-money subscription model

Worksheet Resources

Nobody has even a vague idea of how much goes into preparing a lesson before they actually start doing it. If you want your class to run smoothly, you need to look at curriculums, prepare lesson plans , materials, assessment methods, activities, games, and many other elements to keep the students engaged and motivated.

Super Teacher Worksheets won’t help you with all of the lesson elements, but if you’re looking for worksheets only, this is a great place to start.

While most worksheets are math-related, you’ll also find some for:

  • Reading comprehension
  • Early literacy
  • Social studies

Materials cover grades from pre-K to elementary school (up to grade 5).

Worksheet Generators

Not finding exactly what you’re looking for? Super Teacher Worksheets offers various generators that can help you create your own worksheet in a few clicks. For instance, if you want your students to practice simple addition , all you need to do is select the ranges of the first and second addends, as well as the number of addition problems per sheet, and voila, it’s there!

STW has multiple generators that aren’t limited to worksheets only, as seen in the table below:

Subscription Model

While there are some free materials, you’ll need to become a member to use the full library of Super Teacher Worksheets. The good news is, unlike the majority of online teaching sources that charge per download, STW has a subscription model. This means that, once you sign up, you’ll have unlimited access to all materials and won’t have to worry about paying for a worksheet that turns out to be unusable.

Super Teacher Worksheets Pricing

Super Teacher Worksheets has two types of memberships—individual and site license. The latter is an option for the entire school as you’ll receive login information that can be accessed by anyone who works at the school.

super teacher worksheets proofreading

The website doesn’t offer a free trial, but you can request a refund during the first 30 days. The subscription lasts for 365 days and then renews automatically, so you need to cancel it in advance if you don’t want to pay again.

Why Teach Simple Is a Great Alternative to Super Teacher Worksheets

super teacher worksheets proofreading

Super Teacher Worksheets is a great source of worksheets for children in kindergarten and elementary school.

Teach Simple is a one-stop shop for all your teaching needs. Not only does it provide worksheets for all grades but you can find flash cards , games, projects, lesson plans, curriculums, graphics, ebooks, audiobooks, and other materials to enrich your classes.

The best part is, you don’t have to pay upfront before you get to confirm the quality of the materials. You can sign up for Teach Simple for free and use a 30-day trial, during which you can make unlimited downloads without any payment obligations.

How Teach Simple Works

When you register for Teach Simple , you’ll be able to make unlimited downloads of high-quality materials made by experienced teachers exclusively. Our contributors are teachers who’ve walked the line and know what it takes to get kids excited and motivated to learn.

Since we believe teachers are critical to our society, we give 50% of our monthly revenue back to our contributors. If you sign up, you’ll be helping out your colleagues.

One of the Teach Simple features you’ll definitely appreciate over STW is the website design and its user-friendly navigation system. You can filter results by grade, subject, publishing date, and material and file type. You can also combine these filters to get specific material types only for a certain grade and subject.

Super Teacher Worksheets vs. Teach Simple

Is there an alternative that can rival Super Teacher Worksheets? Take a look at the following table that overviews some differences between Super Teacher Worksheets and Teach Simple:

Overall Impression

Super Teacher Worksheets will cover all your basic needs for English- and math-related worksheets. The standout feature includes the various generators via which you can create a worksheet tailored to you with ease in a couple of clicks.

It also has a subscription model, which is far more affordable in the long run as compared to the charge-per-download payment system. The only issue with it is that you have to pay upfront even before you get to see what their materials look like.

What if you want more than worksheets? Super Teacher Worksheets can’t help you with that. You can turn to Teach Simple instead, which offers a dozen different material types for all subjects from early learning to high school. You can use a free trial to check out the paid products and assure yourself of their quality.

Review: Super Teacher Worksheets

I am so happy that we were given an individual membership to Super Teacher Worksheets .

Launched in 2007, Super Teacher Worksheets is an amazing educational website that contains over 10,000 printable worksheets, activities and games. Though currently most of their resources are aimed for the Kindergarten to 5th Grade levels, they are slowly adding resources for higher grades.

Super Teacher Worksheets

The price, $20 for 12 months access, is also very affordable making this an amazing resource for homeschooling families and teachers. You can search the subjects for the activities you need and print out the ones that you want. It is so easy! Categories include: Math, Reading & Writing, Phonics & Early Literacy, Handwriting, Grammar, Spellings Lists,  Science, Social Studies, Holiday, Puzzles & Brain Teasers, Teacher Helpers, Pre-K and Kindergarten, and Worksheet Generator.

Super Teacher Worksheets 2

Many of the worksheets are connected to the common core which is fantastic. Just click on the CC next to view pdf and you can see which common core standards the activity relates too.

Super Teacher Worksheets 11

There are also quite a few free activities for you to trial, allowing you to see how the worksheets look and to see if they will work for you, as you can see in the above picture.

Fully paid members also have access to a ‘filing cabinet’. This allows you to ‘save’ your favourite worksheets, allowing for easier access in the future. Think of this like bookmarking a page you enjoy.

Super Teacher Worksheets 12

So, how did we go?

Super Teacher Worksheets 1

Our boys have really become interested in dinosaurs over the last couple of months, so I did a quick search for dinosaur worksheets and found some amazing dinosaur resources. They enjoyed working together completing these worksheets.

Super Teacher Worksheets

Then I searched for some worksheets on division for B. He has only just started learning division in the last couple of weeks and he found these Division Mystery Picture activities really fun.

Super Teacher Worksheets 1

R has really loved learning about fractions so I searched for worksheets on fractions at his level. This fraction sort worksheet was used more as a review for him.

Super Teacher Worksheets 2

Both boys enjoy learning about animals and the animal worksheets were a big hit with them.

Super Teacher Worksheets

R doesn’t like to write or do ‘big’ math sums, but he didn’t complain once when completing this Math Puzzle Picture. He sat there and completed each sum, trying to guess what the picture was after gluing each piece of the puzzle on.

Some other things that I like are how easy the website is to navigate and find what you are looking for, having answer keys included and the way you can check what is  new on the site as well. You are able to see when the recent activities have been added to the site and read , a little description about each one.

Overall, we have found the worksheets and activities fun and exciting and really good for learning new skills or reviewing old one. As we are living in a caravan, travelling around, we spend a lot of time out and about visiting all the attractions in each place we stop at. Super Teacher Worksheets has been a massive blessing, allowing me to search and print worksheets for the boys to complete, allowing me to spend less time searching and more time with my family.

Homeschooling with Super Teacher Worksheets

super teacher worksheets proofreading

Disclosure: I received this complimentary product through the  Homeschool Review Crew .

No matter what shiny, new curriculum you may have purchased this year, there’s going to come a time when you need a brief change up. Super Teacher Worksheets to the rescue! Whether it’s for extra practice, reinforcement, or just for fun, these worksheets are something homeschooling families need in their stash of “good stuff to have around”.

What are Super Teacher Worksheets?

Super Teacher Worksheets is exactly what the name says it is. It is a treasure trove of worksheets! There are over 20,000 printable PDF resources for students in Kindergarten through 5th grade. The worksheets include math, reading, writing, grammar, spelling, science, social studies, puzzles, brain teasers, and more! Members have unlimited access to thousands of worksheets and printables for a low cost of $24.95 per year.

One cool feature of Super Teacher Worksheets is the filing cabinet. This feature is helpful for saving and organizing your worksheets for later use. The files can be organized by topic, month, student name, or however one would want to organize them. Another cool feature is the worksheet generator. The generator allows you to create your own math problems, spelling lists, flashcards, bingo games, word games, quizzes, and more! The quizzes can also be customized to your preference of: multiple choice, matching, fill in the blank, or short answer/essay. You can also create your own calendar and newsletters. I remember my daughter creating a school newsletter years ago for our homeschool. She even sent copies to her grandparents for a short time!

Samples of Super Teacher Worksheets

Take a look at a few worksheets I printed out. The type is easy to read, the graphics are quite nice, and there are answer keys too! Super Teacher Worksheets are more than just worksheets! There’s even cootie-catchers! Remember those? I made one for old time’s sake. I also printed off worksheets of two more things that I really like – clouds and chocolate! You will also find printable calendars and certificates to encourage a skill or achievement. While I was browsing the award section, I noticed fold-able paper trophies too! Yes, there’s even a best mom trophy!

super teacher worksheets proofreading

What I thought of Super Teacher Worksheets

That’s easy. They are SUPER! I vividly remember searching for supplemental worksheets to fill in gaps or break the monotony when my own kids were younger. The internet is an ocean of resources! Yes, there are several freebies out there, but to save time and sanity, I would have loved to have this resource available! Everything is well organized, so it’s easy to find what you’re looking for. When you find it, you can use it right away, or file for later. Super Teacher Worksheets really are super!

Using Super Teacher Worksheets with older kids

super teacher worksheets proofreading

I mostly blog and review things for middle/high school age kids, but I want to leave you with a final thought about using these worksheets with kids older than the recommended K-5th age group. If you are homeschooling young children that have older siblings, include them in some of the fun stuff! The worksheet generator allows for customization, and it’s fun to make a cryptogram or word scrambles for kids of any age to solve. You can even reward them for just being awesome! That kind of recognition can give that older kid a boost of confidence!

Super Teacher Worksheets really lives up to its name! Be sure to check out what other members of the Review Crew thought by clicking the banner below!

This year I am excited to start off our homeschool year by adding to our curriculum with printed worksheets from Super Teachers Worksheets Full 1-Year Membership . Super Teacher Worksheets has a huge selection of worksheets and printable resources that have been extremely helpful to me and my kids! They have created so many wonderful resources. I was excited to find tons of Reading, Math, Spelling, Science, and history resources for students in elementary and middle school. Today, I wanted to tell you about some of my favorite resources that I have found.

Math Worksheets!

#FreeProductReceived Super Teacher Worksheets is a great low cost resource for printable worksheets and activities for your homeschool. #hsreviews #superteacherworksheets

We have found so many worksheets that my kids and I love. But so far, my favorite resource so far has been their Daily Math Reviews. There are Daily Math Reviews and Daily Word Problems. The daily math review is called Math Buzz. It is a great daily spiral review. I love that it is as simple as print and go. You can easily print a week at a time. Each review has 5 boxes with different math skills practice. My almost 9 year old is doing great with the daily math buzz right now. It is providing wonderful independent math practice for him each day.

Worksheet Generator!

I have also found that Super Teacher’s worksheet generator is a great tool to easily create extra practice for reading, spelling, or math. I love that there is a simple math worksheet generator. It is perfect for creating quick basic operation drills. With it you can create worksheets to practice basic or advanced addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division. You can also quickly make word-searches or crossword puzzles to give your kids extra practice with their vocabulary or spelling words. For other tests, quizzes, or practice there are multiple-choice, fill in the blank, or or matching worksheet templates that are very easy to use.

Language Arts and Reading Practice!

#FreeProductReceived Super Teacher Worksheets is a great low cost resource for printable worksheets and activities for your homeschool. #hsreviews #superteacherworksheets

I also love the reading comprehension passages from Super Teacher Worksheets . There is a great selection of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry passages to practice reading comprehension at grade levels 1-6. The passages are fun articles, stories and poems with multiple choice and short answer questions. It is so helpful to have a quick go to resource to find quality reading comprehension practice. Right now there are a lot more elementary level resources than anything else. However, Super Teacher Worksheets has been adding to their site regularly and now they have quite a few resources that are also appropriate for middle school!

I also was excited to see many literature units as well that I look forward to using with my younger kids. They each have activities and reading comprehension questions for many different elementary chapter books. In addition, there are spelling units, reading skills worksheets, graphic organizers and and grammar practice pages. I also look forward to using all the fun writing prompts and activities as well.

And Much More…
