Microsoft has announced that PowerPoint for Windows is dropping support for the Office Presentation Service in favor of new web-based Live Presentations. The company has posted a message on the Microsoft 365 message center notifying that Windows users will no longer be able to broadcast their presentations from the PowerPoint desktop app starting this month.
“We will be retiring the feature ‘Office Presentation Service’ from the Windows version of PowerPoint (starting with build 16.0.14122.100000). We will be removing the ‘Office Presentation Service’ option/button from the “Present Online” menu under SlideShow ribbon in PowerPoint for Windows. Instead we recommend the utilization of “Present Live” in PowerPoint for the Web which is where we will continue to invest,” the company explained.
The soon to be unsupported Office Presentation Service was released around nine years ago. The service is freely available and requires a free Microsoft account. It allows users to present their PowerPoint presentations online to a remote audience by creating a temporary web address.
People who use the Office Presentation Service will now be able to use the new Live Presentations feature in PowerPoint for the web when presenting their content to others. The tool was announced back in June last year , and it makes it easier for the participants to engage with a presentation at their own pace. The audience can use a smartphone, laptop, or tablet to connect to the presentation and send live reactions, give feedback, or navigate back to review previous slides. They can also enable live captions and subtitles in their preferred language.
Microsoft has stated that this change is gradually rolling out to customers in the Current Channel as part of the monthly updates for PowerPoint (build 16.0.14122.100000). PowerPoint Live Presentations are supported on Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox on both Mac and Windows, and you can find more information on our detailed hands-on guide .
Radu Tyrsina has been a Windows fan ever since he got his first PC, a Pentium III (a monster at that time). For most of the kids of his age, the Internet was an amazing way to play and communicate with others, but he was deeply impressed by the flow of information and how easily you can find anything on the web. Prior to founding Windows Report, this particular curiosity about digital content enabled him to grow a number of sites that helped hundreds of millions reach faster the answer they're looking for.

5 Fixes for Designer Not Working in Microsoft PowerPoint on Windows
Pankil is a Civil Engineer turned freelance writer. Since his arrival at Guiding Tech in 2021, he delves into the world of how-tos, and troubleshooting guides for Android, iOS, and Windows. Besides his new-found love for mechanical keyboards, he's a disciplined footfall fan and loves international travel with his wife.
- The Designer button may disappear or appear grayed out in PowerPoint if you have previously disabled the feature.
- Selecting the wrong slide layout or disabling the connected experiences option for Office apps can also prevent PowerPoint from displaying design ideas.
- If the Designer feature still won’t work in PowerPoint, consider running the Office repair tool.
Try Basic Fixes
- Check your Microsoft 365 subscription status: The Designer feature in PowerPoint is exclusive to Microsoft 365 subscribers. So, ensure that your Office subscription has not expired. To do so, visit Microsoft’s website and check the services & subscriptions section.
- Check your internet connection: An inconsistent or lack of internet connection can cause the Designer button in Microsoft PowerPoint to become unresponsive or stop working. Hence, ensure your internet connection is working before trying other things.
Fix 1: Allow PowerPoint to Show Design Ideas
The Designer button may be missing or grayed out in PowerPoint if you have previously disabled the feature. If you are unsure, follow these steps to confirm that PowerPoint is allowed to show design ideas on your Windows computer.
Step 1: Open PowerPoint and click the File menu at the top-left corner.
Step 2: Click on Options in the left sidebar.
Step 3: Under the PowePoint Designer section, check the boxes for Automatically show me design ideas and Automatically show me suggestions when I create a new presentation . Then, click OK .
Step 4: Go to the Design tab in PowerPoint and click the Designer button to use the feature.
Fix 2: Enable Connected Experiences
PowerPoint may not show design ideas even after enabling the feature if the connected experiences option for Office apps isn’t turned on. Here’s how to fix that.
Step 1: Open Microsoft PowerPoint and click the File menu at the top-left corner.
Step 2: Select Options from the left pane.
Step 3: In the PowerPoint Options window, click the General tab. Then, click the Privacy Settings button in the right pane.
Step 4: Select the checkbox that reads Turn on all connected experiences and click OK .
Fix 3: Use the Correct Slide Layout
Such issues can also arise if you use the wrong slide layout. To get design suggestions in PowerPoint, use the Title or Title and Content slide layout.
Step 1: Open your PowerPoint file and select the slide where you want to use the Designer feature.
Step 2: Go to the Home tab, click the Layout button, and select Title and Content or Title Only option.
Fix 4: Avoid Using Third-Party Themes in PowerPoint
Are you using a custom theme in PowerPoint? That affects the functionality of the Designer feature in Microsoft PowerPoint . It’s best to stick to one of the built-in themes for PowerPoint.
Open your PowerPoint presentation, switch to the Design tab, and select any built-in theme . Following that, check if the issue persists.
Fix 5: Run the Office Repair Tool
If the above suggestions do not work, there may be an issue with the Office installation on your PC. To fix it, run the Microsoft Office repair tool.
Step 1: Press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type appwiz.cpl in the box and press Enter .
Step 2: Locate and select the Microsoft Office product on the list. Then, click on Change .
Step 3: Select Quick Repair and click on Repair .
If the Designer feature does not work in PowerPoint even after performing a Quick Repair, repeat the above steps to perform an Online Repair. Note that this may take a little longer, and you’ll need an active internet connection.

PowerPoint files not rendering in Office Online Server after Security Update
- 5 contributors
- Applies to: PowerPoint
After patching Office Online Server to the May or June 2019 security update, PowerPoint files do not render, under what appears to be random circumstances during Skype for Business sharing sessions, and displays the following error:
Sorry, PowerPoint Online ran into a problem opening this presentation. To view this presentation please open it in Microsoft PowerPoint.
Also, while attempting to render PowerPoint in the browser, you might see a similar error message before or after scrolling through slides:
The exact circumstances of the issue are not necessarily limited to the above scenarios. Also, the error may be present for issues other than those listed in this article.
Issue was introduced to the product in the May and June 2019 security updates for Office Online Server.
This issue was resolved as part of the August 2019 Security Update for Office Online Server, but some steps must be taken to ensure functionality after the patch. This is currently the only supported resolution for the issue:
- Remove all Office Online Servers from the farm (all servers must be removed at the same time).
- Install the August 2019 Security update on all OOS servers but do NOT rebuild the farm yet. https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4475528/security-update-for-office-online-server-august-13
- Add the Office Online Servers back to the farm.
- Verify that the PowerPoint files appear as expected.

How to Fix the "Product Activation Failed" Error on Microsoft Office Apps for Windows

You’ve reached your account maximum for followed topics.
Do you encounter the "Product Activation Failed" error when you open Office desktop applications? Do you want to use Word, Excel, and other apps, but an error bar appears on the screen informing you that your product has been deactivated and you should reactivate it first? You might find this extremely frustrating, especially when you have to complete a project urgently.
Why does this issue occur? This article will discuss the causes of this error on Windows and how to fix it.
What Causes the "Product Activation Failed" Error in Microsoft Office Apps?
Here are a few reasons why you might see a "Product Activation Failed" error on any Microsoft Office app:
- You're either using the app without a license, or your Microsoft 365 or any other subscription has expired.
- You are running a pirated version of Windows.
- If the subscription is active, you might be logged in to the app with a different account than the one you subscribed with.
- It's been a while since you updated your Office apps.
- The date on your device is incorrect.
As you now better understand what causes this error, let's see how to fix it.
How to Fix the "Product Activation Failed" Error in Microsoft Office Apps
To fix the "Product Activation Failed" error, ensure your subscription is active, you're signed in with the right account, and the date is correct. Other possible solutions include updating the Office app where you are encountering the issue and confirming that you have a genuine copy of Windows installed on your computer.
Now let's see how to check the above settings and apply the solutions to prevent this error from occurring again.
1. Apply Some Preliminary Fixes
First, perform the following preliminary checks:
- Ensure Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or any other app you're using is up-to-date. For that, open the app, navigate to the File tab, and select Account on the left sidebar. Then, click on the Update Options dropdown and select Update Now .
If the above steps don't help, try applying the remaining fixes.
2. Don't Use a Cracked Version of Microsoft Office Apps
To activate Microsoft Office apps legally, you should always purchase the subscription from Microsoft's website or its trusted partners. If you have used a crack or third-party activator to activate these apps and encountered this issue after a few days, Microsoft is likely to have detected this unauthorized activation and blocked it.
Therefore, if you have chosen an illegitimate path, purchase the Microsoft 365 subscription, and this error will be resolved. If you want to get a better deal, check out our article covering different ways to get cheap Microsoft Office and Microsoft Word licenses .
3. Don't Use a Pirated Copy of Windows
Just as you should avoid activating Office apps through unauthorized means, you shouldn't use unauthorized gateways to activate Windows. If Microsoft detects that you are using a copy of Windows that is not legitimate, it may block your access to certain apps and features.
Consequently, your legitimate Office subscription may not work on illegally activated Windows. So, if you're using a pirated copy of Windows, consider buying a license.
However, if you are already subscribed to Microsoft 365 and Windows is registered, ensure it hasn't expired.
4. Ensure Your Subscription Hasn't Expired
Check the email account you used to purchase the subscription to see if you have recently received an email from Microsoft. If you find an email regarding subscription expiration, log in to your Microsoft 365 account to confirm.
If the subscription has expired, you will have to renew it to fix the error. However, if you have not received any email and the subscription is still active, you might be logged in to Microsoft apps with a different account.
5. Ensure You Are Logged Into the Correct Account
You must use the same Microsoft account you used to buy the subscription to access all features of the Office apps. If you share your computer with others, they might have logged in to their accounts that do not have active subscriptions.
To ensure that's not the case, follow the below steps:
- Open the Office application where you are experiencing the error.
- Navigate to the File tab and select Account on the left sidebar.
- Under User Information , you can find the account information. If you see a different account there, click on Sign out . Then, sign in again using the account that has an active subscription.
6. Ensure the Date Is Set Correctly
The "Product Activation Failed" error can also be caused by an incorrectly set date on your device. If your subscription is going to expire in a specific month of the year, which is yet to come, but the date you set on your device goes past the day when the subscription will actually expire, you may encounter this error.
Look at your screen's lower-right end and check the set date. If it isn't set correctly, follow our guide on how to change the date and time on Windows 11 .
7. Reset the Problematic Office Application
If the above checks don't help, reset the Office application where you are experiencing the error. Resetting the application won't delete any of your data. However, it may revert any customizations you've made in the app so far. If that's a concern for you, skip this step.
If you want to reset the app but aren't familiar with the process, check out our guide on how to reset any Windows app .
8. Run the OSPREARM.exe File
If you have not been successful in fixing this error, you can try running a .exe file named OSPREARM. This is an activation verifier which is known to fix most activation errors. Here's how to access and run this file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Go to the following path: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16
- Locate the OSPREARM.EXE file.
It is important to note that the name of the Office folder in the path above may differ depending on which version of Office you are using. Therefore, if you use a different version than Office16, change the last part of the above path accordingly.
Fix the "Product Activation Failed" Error on Windows
Running into the "Product Activation Failed" error and finding most of the features of Office apps restricted isn't a great experience. Hopefully, the solutions covered above will help you resolve the issue. In case they don't work, try the workaround. If that does not work as well, reinstall the Office application.

How Fix PowerPoint Cannot Play Media - Best Guide
In a world driven by visual communication, ensuring flawless multimedia playback in PowerPoint presentations is paramount. This guide aims to equip educators, trainers, and professionals with the knowledge they need to overcome common media-related challenges, guaranteeing impactful and engaging presentations.
Part 1: Causes & Solutions for “Cannot Play Media in PowerPoint”
In the realm of multimedia presentations, encountering playback issues can be a common hurdle. Let's delve into some of the prevalent causes and their corresponding solutions to ensure seamless media playback in PowerPoint.
1. Unsupported Media Formats
Cause : One of the primary reasons for media playback issues in PowerPoint is the use of unsupported formats. PowerPoint has specific preferences for media file types, and if your file doesn't meet these criteria, playback problems can arise.
Solution : Convert your media files to compatible formats like MP4 or WMV. Tools like HandBrake or Online-Convert can help with this process. By ensuring your media files adhere to PowerPoint's specifications, you can sidestep compatibility hiccups.
2. Corrupted Media Files
Cause : Another potential culprit for playback troubles is a corrupted media file. Whether due to incomplete downloads or file corruption during storage, a damaged file can thwart smooth playback.
Solution : Employ specialized video repair software like Stellar Repair for Video or EaseUS Video Repair. These tools are designed to recover and restore corrupted media files, allowing for uninterrupted playback
3. Outdated Codecs
Cause : Outdated or missing codecs can be a hindrance to media playback. Codecs are essential components that enable the encoding and decoding of audio and video files. Without the right codecs, PowerPoint may struggle to play certain media.
Solution : Install or update the necessary codecs. For Windows users, the K-Lite Codec Pack is a reliable option, while Mac users can consider installing Perian. These installations ensure that PowerPoint can interpret and play your media files correctly.
4. Inadequate Hardware Acceleration
Cause : Sometimes, insufficient hardware acceleration settings can impede media playback. This can be particularly noticeable when handling high-definition or complex media files.
Solution : Navigate to File > Options > Advanced > Display within PowerPoint. Adjust the hardware acceleration settings by checking or unchecking the "Disable hardware graphics acceleration" option based on your system configuration. Fine-tuning these settings can significantly enhance media performance.
5. Insufficient System Resources
Cause : Running multiple applications concurrently or working with resource-intensive files can strain system resources, leading to media playback issues.
Solution : Prioritize your presentation by closing unnecessary background applications. If problems persist, consider upgrading your system's RAM or utilizing a more powerful computer to ensure smooth playback.
By addressing these common issues with targeted solutions, you'll be equipped to deliver flawless multimedia presentations that captivate your audience.
Part 2: Tips for Playing Media in PowerPoint Effectively
Ensuring seamless media playback in PowerPoint requires a strategic approach. Here are some invaluable tips to enhance your experience and captivate your audience:
1. Optimize media files for PowerPoint
Reduce the file size . Large media files can take longer to load and play, which can impact the performance of your presentation. You can reduce the file size of your media files by using a video compression tool.
Use a compatible format . As mentioned in Part 1, not all media formats are supported by PowerPoint. If you are having trouble playing a media file, try converting it to a more compatible format.
Embed media files . Embedding media files in your PowerPoint presentation can help to ensure that they play correctly. To embed a media file, right-click on the file and select "Embed Media".
2. Use hardware acceleration
Enable hardware acceleration . Hardware acceleration can help to improve the performance of media playback in PowerPoint. To enable hardware acceleration, go to File > Options > Advanced > Display. Under the "Hardware graphics" section, check the box next to "Enable hardware graphics acceleration".
Update your graphics driver . An outdated graphics driver can cause problems with media playback. Make sure that you have the latest driver installed for your graphics card.
3. Troubleshoot playback issues
Restart PowerPoint . Sometimes, a simple restart can fix problems with media playback.
Repair PowerPoint . If you are still having problems, you can try repairing PowerPoint. To do this, go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. Find Microsoft Office in the list of programs and click on "Change". Select the "Repair" option and click on "Continue".
Contact Microsoft support . If you are still unable to resolve the issue, you can contact Microsoft support for assistance.
I have found the tips in this guide to be very helpful in improving the performance of media playback in PowerPoint. In particular, I have found that optimizing media files for PowerPoint and configuring media playback settings can make a big difference in the smoothness of playback.
I have also encountered a few problems with media playback in PowerPoint. For example, I have had problems with videos stuttering or freezing. In some cases, I have been able to resolve these problems by restarting PowerPoint or repairing the presentation. However, in other cases, I have had to convert the media files to a different format.

USDA Announces New Fire Insurance Protection-Smoke Index Endorsement for California Grapes
Back to News Releases
DAVIS, Calif. , Aug. 12, 2024 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that the new Fire Insurance Protection-Smoke Index (FIP-SI) endorsement is available for grapes grown in California starting with the 2025 crop year. USDA’s Risk Management Agency (RMA) is offering this endorsement for grapes insured under the Grape Crop Provisions grown in the California counties listed in the actuarial documents. The sales closing date is January 31, 2025, for the 2025 crop year.
This endorsement covers a portion of the deductible of the Grape Crop Provisions when the insured county experiences a minimum number of Smoke Events identified in the actuarial documents. A Smoke Event is a day with heavy smoke density as determined by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hazard Mapping System Smoke Product.
“With the increasing number and severity of natural disasters, the Risk Management Agency is pleased to give grape producers in California another option when it comes to managing risk,” said Jeffrey Yasui, Director of RMA’s Regional Office that covers California . “This endorsement is user-friendly and provides additional protection against potential smoke damage. Even though smoke damage is covered in the producer’s individual policy, growers who have the endorsement attached to their individual policy can collect an indemnity under this endorsement if there is a sufficient number of Smoke Events in the county.”
FIP-SI coverage can be combined with the Supplemental Coverage Option Endorsement or the Catastrophic Risk Protection Endorsement. FIP-SI cannot be purchased in conjunction with any other endorsements to the Grape Crop Provisions.
FIP-SI provides protection against widespread loss in a county. Individual vineyard yields and revenues are not considered under FIP-SI. It is possible that a producer with the FIP-SI endorsement may experience reduced yield and not receive an indemnity under the FIP-SI coverage. Likewise, producers may receive an indemnity under FIP-SI but not their grape policy. Triggered counties will be determined after the end of the insurance period. Producers with FIP-SI coverage are not required to file a notice of loss. The counties where payments occur will be identified in the actuarial documents.
An administrative fee and premium for each grape variety covered by each FIP-SI Endorsement will be due in addition to any administrative fees and/or premiums of the underlying policy. However, the FIP-SI administrative fee may be waived if you qualify as a limited resource farmer, a Beginning Farmer Rancher, or a Veteran Farmer Rancher.
RMA collaborated with stakeholders to develop this program. In crop year 2024, producers insured $2 billion in covered liabilities on 413,000 acres of grapes in California.
More Information
Crop insurance is sold and delivered solely through private crop insurance agents. A list of crop insurance agents is available at all USDA Service Centers and online at the RMA Agent Locator . Producers can learn more about crop insurance and the modern farm safety net at rma.usda.gov or by contacting their RMA Regional Office .
RMA secures the future of agriculture by providing world class risk management tools to rural America through Federal crop insurance and risk management education programs. RMA provides policies for more than 130 crops and is constantly working to adjust and create new policies based on producer needs and feedback.
USDA touches the lives of all Americans each day in so many positive ways. Under the Biden-Harris administration, USDA is transforming America’s food system with a greater focus on more resilient local and regional food production, fairer markets for all producers, ensuring access to safe, healthy and nutritious food in all communities, building new markets and streams of income for farmers and producers using climate smart food and forestry practices, making historic investments in infrastructure and clean energy capabilities in rural America, and committing to equity across the Department by removing systemic barriers and building a workforce more representative of America. How Food Prices Have Changed Over the Past Four Years
Grocery prices are no longer rising as rapidly, but food inflation remains a top issue for voters, polls show.
By Madeleine Ngo
Reporting from Washington
- Aug. 13, 2024
A central issue has plagued the Biden administration for most of its term: the steep rise in grocery prices.
Polls have consistently found that inflation remains a top concern for voters, who have seen their budgets squeezed. A YouGov poll published last month found that 64 percent of Americans said inflation was a “very serious problem.” And when it comes to inflation, several surveys suggested that Americans were most concerned about grocery prices.
Despite the gloom about grocery costs, food price increases have generally been cooling for months. On Wednesday, new data on inflation for July will show if the trend has continued.
Economists in a Bloomberg survey think that inflation overall probably climbed by 3 percent from a year earlier, in line with a 3 percent rise in June. That sort of reading would probably keep officials at the Federal Reserve on track to cut interest rates in September. Investors, who were recently rattled by signs of an economic slowdown, have looked to rate cuts as a support for markets.
Some voters have blamed President Biden for rising prices, pointing out that food costs have soared over the past four years. Former President Donald J. Trump, when accepting the Republican nomination last month, highlighted grocery costs and said that he would “make America affordable again.”
In the year through June, grocery prices rose 1.1 percent, a significant slowdown from a recent peak of 13.5 percent in August 2022 . Many consumers might not be feeling relief, though, because food prices overall have not fallen but have continued to increase, albeit at a slower rate. Compared with four years ago, grocery prices are up about 20 percent .

This build includes all the improvements in Windows 11, version 22H2.
No additional issues are documented for this release.
This security update includes improvements that were a part of update KB5040527 (released July 23, 2024). Below is a summary of the key issues that this update addresses when you install this KB. If there are new features, it lists them as well. The bold text within the brackets indicates the item or area of the change we are documenting.
[BitLocker (known issue)] A BitLocker recovery screen shows when you start up your device. This occurs after you install the July 9, 2024, update. This issue is more likely to occur if device encryption is on. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Device encryption . To unlock your drive, Windows might ask you to enter the recovery key from your Microsoft account.
[Lock screen] This update addresses CVE-2024-38143. Because of this, the “Use my Windows user account” checkbox is not available on the lock screen to connect to Wi-Fi.
[NetJoinLegacyAccountReuse] This update removes this registry key. For more information refer to KB5020276—Netjoin: Domain join hardening changes .
[Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) and Linux Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI)] This update applies SBAT to systems that run Windows. This stops vulnerable Linux EFI (Shim bootloaders) from running. This SBAT update will not apply to systems that dual-boot Windows and Linux. After the SBAT update is applied, older Linux ISO images might not boot. If this occurs, work with your Linux vendor to get an updated ISO image.
If you installed earlier updates, only the new updates contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.
For more information about security vulnerabilities, please refer to the Security Update Guide website and the August 2024 Security Updates .
