Smartphone innovation in the third decade of the 21st century

Provided by Tecno Mobile

2019 was a year of triumphs and challenges for the smartphone industry. It was a time when manufacturers encountered an almost continual decline of global shipments—but it also marked the introduction of sophisticated new features such as foldable screens and long-awaited 5G technology. Though far from mature, these early drafts are helping establish a solid foundation and direction for smartphone technology in 2020.

From the day they debuted, mobile phones have been evolving. The world has now entered an era of cell phones with superior functions. Over the past 20 years, the following aspects of mobile devices have undergone significant changes:

Style and appearance. One of the most observable changes is the look and feel of mobile phones. They have morphed from their original candy-bar form to the iconic flip phone, which enjoyed great popularity for a long time. Then the slide phone took its place, thanks to its modern design and convenient operation. Next was the touchscreen phone, the most widely available style in the current smartphone market.

Smartphone innovation in the third decade of the 21st century

Size. Like computers, when mobile phones first came out, they were big and bulky; today they’re small and lightweight. The goal throughout their evolution was to meet the needs and expectations of users—to be more portable and user-friendly.

Function. Of course, mobile phones, starting way back with telephones, were invented for communication. In the past, phones played a single role: they allowed people to make calls. Thanks to the development of networks, technology, and social needs, phones today let users do much more—send and receive text messages and emails, take photos and videos, access the internet, listen to music, and play games, among many other functions. That’s not to mention artificial intelligence (AI) technology, steadily making its way into mobile phones and allowing for things like human-machine interaction—“Alexa, add milk and eggs to my shopping list.”

Image/camera technology. The photography function is one of the most remarkable changes in modern smartphones. In the beginning, most smartphones had a single, rear-facing camera for photo shooting. Then the smartphone camera came of age: it moved to the screen display, facing the user, then adding video, high-definition, night-mode, and anti-shake technology. All these features together make the photography function the most valuable addition to the modern smartphone.

Smartphone innovation in the third decade of the 21st century

Stepping into 2020, here are six trends that users can expect to see in the latest generation of smartphones:

More screen. Most smartphone companies have introduced phones with full screens. There’s no denying that full screens have advantages—they give the smartphone an outstanding screen display and stunning visual effects. The full-screen design, to some extent, drives creative development in the smartphone industry.

One important feature of full-screen displays over the past few years is the notch—the black cutout, typically rectangular, at the top of the phone that houses sensors, speaker, and the phone’s front-facing camera. Two new designs attempting to maximize screen space—the water-drop notch and no-notch displays—will most likely be the dominant smartphone design in 2020. Compared with the more prominent monobrow notch, the water-drop notch display takes up less room and can have a screen-to-body ratio of 85%. The no-notch display is new to the market and has the highest screen-to-body ratio, in some phones thanks to a pop-up camera at the top of the phone.

Mobile photography. Super-high-definition cameras are a goal that smartphone companies will continue to chase after, as social media becomes an increasingly important part of modern life. People are spending more time on social media than ever before. Not only do they send and receive written messages through platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, they are also using smartphone cameras to capture and share important life moments, hence the demand for ever-higher photo quality.

In the second half of 2019, smartphones with 64-megapixel cameras were released to the market. This high-res imaging technology will be a big selling point in 2020, with 80% of smartphone companies putting out smartphones fitted with these cameras. The demand for better mobile photography dovetails with the introduction of 5G technology, which allows more data to be transmitted over wireless networks.

Foldable phones. 2019’s CES show in Las Vegas highlighted that foldable technology is on the rise, particularly foldable personal computers. Limited by cost and technology, foldable smartphones have not been widely accepted by consumers. However, with the potential for an even greater screen size, an evolution back towards foldable phones may be likely. Smartphone manufacturers are continuing to innovate around foldable models and the industry expects to see new breakthroughs in the decade ahead.

Artificial intelligence. AI technology will significantly enhance the user experience, improving smartphones’ sensing, analyzing, and interacting functionality. For example, with on-device sensors such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Global Positioning System technology, a smartphone can create a rich, offline profile of its user and even foresee his or her needs, then make suggestions that will help fulfill them. And through machine-human interaction, the smartphone can collect feedback, continually correcting mistakes so that it’s in lockstep with the user.

As AI gets infused into smartphones in 2020 and beyond, it will also help improve photos, battery life, and cybersecurity.

5G. 2020 is considered the “first year” of 5G communication, which many analysts and observers predict will invigorate and restructure the telecoms industry. 5G technology promises to vastly boost the speed and widen the coverage of wireless networks, and its advent is a huge opportunity for smartphone companies, with hundreds of millions of 5G phones expected to ship in 2020.

Processors. There is still room for improving mobile processors in 2020, to keep pace with smartphone industry trends. More powerful processors mean improved graphics performance. The success of the Nintendo Switch video game console shows that smartphones with high-quality visuals are popular among users. Moreover, modern mobile chips that can support a smartphone’s camera, video, audio, gesture recognition, and other functionality have become mainstream, overtaking simple processor design. Smartphones this year will also see built-in 5G connectivity.

Mobile Technologies – Definition, Types, Uses, Advantages

Mobile technology is a type of technology in which a user utilizes a mobile phone to perform communications-related tasks, such as communicating with friends, relatives, and others. It is used to send data from one system to another. Portable two-way communications systems, computing devices, and accompanying networking equipment make up mobile technology.

Mobile technology is largely employed in cellular communication systems and other related areas. It employs a network architecture that allows multiple transmitters to deliver data on a single channel at the same time. Because it reduces the potential of frequency interference from two or more sources, this platform allows multiple users to use single frequencies. The channel has evolved over time.

This is fast expanding; its applications are getting increasingly broad over time, and it is gradually replacing other similar sources of communication on the market, such as post offices and landlines. Mobile technology has progressed from a simple phone and texting device to a multi-tasking system that can be used for GPS navigation, internet browsing, gaming, and instant messaging, among other things. With the rise, experts claim that the future of computer technology is dependent on wireless networking and mobile computing.

Through tablets and small PCs, mobile technology is becoming increasingly popular. This smartphone system has since been improved to a big multitasking computer that can be used for GPS navigation, gaming, internet browsing, and instant messaging. Tablets and portable laptops have increased the adoption of mobile technology. The mobile networks that connect these devices are referred to as wireless systems. They allow speech, data, and (mobile) apps to be shared between mobile devices.

Mobile technology is becoming increasingly prevalent. Smartphone users have surpassed 3 billion, and the global mobile workforce is expected to reach 1.87 billion by 2022. Any gadget with internet capabilities that can be accessed from anywhere is referred to as mobile technology. Smartphones, tablets, some iPods, and laptops already fall within this category, but this list will undoubtedly grow in the future years.

Types of Mobile Technologies

Followings are the few famous mobile technologies:

Let discuss them one by one in detail:

1. SMS: “SMS” stands for “Short Message Service.” It is now the most widely used and oldest text messaging service. SMS are also sent over cellular networks, therefore you’ll need a wireless plan and a wireless carrier. SMS is fast gaining popularity in the world as a low-cost messaging medium. Every text message delivered to a cell phone has become known as SMS. Messages can usually be up to 140 characters long. SMS was originally developed for GSM phones, although it is now supported by all major cellular phone networks.

Although SMS is most commonly used for text messaging between friends or coworkers, it also has a variety of additional uses. For example, SMS subscription services can send weather, news, sports updates, and financial quotes to consumers’ phones. Employees may also be notified of sales requests, service stops, and other business-related information via SMS.

Fortunately, text messages sent via SMS do not require the receiver’s phone to be turned on in order for the message to be delivered. The message will be kept in the SMS service until the receiver switches on his or her phone, at which point it will be transmitted to the recipient’s phone. Most cell phone providers enable you to send a specific amount of text messages per month for free.

2. MMS: MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) messaging is a standard method of delivering multimedia material, including messages. MMS, as opposed to SMS, can send up to forty seconds of video, one picture, a multi-image slideshow, or audio. MMS texting will be supported by the majority of contemporary devices. MMS capability is typically embedded within the text message interface and is turned on automatically when needed. If you enter in a text-only message, for example, it will be transmitted by SMS. If you include a graphic or video, the multimedia part will be sent via MMS. Similarly, if someone sends you a multimedia message, your phone will automatically receive the file via MMS.

An MMS message can convey rich media content to mobile devices at any time and from any location. It is a powerful and effective tool that assists businesses in reinforcing and deepening client loyalty by providing crucial information about their products and services. Because MMS texts are packed with photographs and videos, they are a significant marketing communication tool. As well as other audios. MMS is a cutting-edge method of communicating with others via mobile devices. Text messages are more successful because they deliver valuable information and services to the recipient. The more a corporation approaches its customers, the more probable it is to form a long-term brand partnership.

3. 3G: The third letter in the designation 3G stands for third-generation access technology, which allows mobile phones to connect to the internet. Every new technology introduces new frequency bands and data transmission rates.

The first generation emerged in the 1980s. First-generation uses large phones that had to be mounted on top of cars because they were too heavy to hold. Text messaging was made possible by the second-generation network, which became available in the 1990s. This huge and game-changing advancement also provided a more secure network and laid the path for today’s ubiquitous 3G and 4G technology.

The development of 3G connection-based networks in 2001 marked the start of mainstream Internet use on mobile phones. Soon after, smartphones were introduced, bringing all of the capabilities of a device into the palm of your hand. The signals are transmitted by a network of telephone towers, ensuring robust and relatively rapid long-distance communication. The user’s mobile phone is receiving data from the tower nearest to it. Although it may not appear complicated, 3G technology was revolutionary at the time it was introduced.

Upload speeds of up to 3 Mbps are possible on 3G networks. For example, about 15 seconds for uploading a 3-minute MP3 song. The fastest 2G phones, on the other hand, may get up to 144Kbps  For example, about 8 minutes to download a 3-minute song. 3G systems are intended for digital phones with a full-screen display and better connectivity.

4. 4G: The fourth generation of mobile networking technology is known as 4G, which comes after the 2G and 3G networks. Although it’s commonly referred to as 4G LTE, this isn’t exactly right because LTE is just one sort of 4G. Most mobile network service providers use it now since it is the most developed technology.

However, as you may have heard, 5G is becoming operational alongside current 3G and 4G mobile networks. When it initially came out, 4G revolutionized how we use the mobile internet. Despite the fact that 3G networks were relatively limited, 4G network connectivity allowed consumers to browse the internet and watch HD films on their mobile devices, thereby turning smartphones into laptops.

Most tasks that you can do on a laptop or desktop computer can now be done on mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets. No matter how much data you require, 4 G networks allow you to keep consistent speeds practically anywhere. 4G was launched in the United Kingdom in 2012. Currently, the number of mobile subscribers using 3G outnumbers those using 4G. Expect this to alter in the coming years as 4G contracts become more affordable and 4G network coverage increases across the UK.

Premium 4G offers download speeds of around 14 Mbps, which is over five times quicker than the 3G network’s predecessor. 4G networks can currently attain speeds of up to 150 Mbps, allowing users to download gigabytes of data in minutes, if not seconds, rather than hours as with 3G networks. Uploading data is also significantly faster with 4G – normal upload speeds are over 8 Mbps, with theoretical rates of up to 50 Mbps, whereas 3G upload speeds are under 0.5 Mbps.

5. Global System for Mobile technology: The  (GSM) is an acronym for Global System for Mobile Communication. GSM is a cellular technology that is open and digital and is used for mobile communication. It operates on the 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, and 1900 MHz frequency ranges. It employs a hybrid of FDMA and TDMA.

6. Code Division Multiple Access: (CDMA) is an acronym for code division multiple access. It is a channel access mechanism that also serves as an example of multiple access. Multiple access simply means that data from multiple transmitters can be delivered onto a single communication channel at the same time.

7. Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity): Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that allows us to connect to a network or to other computers or mobile devices across a wireless channel. Data is delivered in a circular region over radio frequencies in Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) is a generic acronym for a communication standard for a wireless network that functions as a Local Area Network without the use of cables or other types of cabling.

Mobile technology: The amazing impact on our lives

image.jpg

I've been passionately following mobile technology for decades. In the beginning, the mobile devices weren't very mobile and a strong back and arms were required to lug them around. They always had to be next to a power outlet, as there was no such thing as batteries.

The technology that drives mobile devices has improved a lot since those days, and especially in the last ten years. Mobile gadgets have gotten smaller, more powerful, and very useful. They are everywhere and play increasingly greater roles in the lives of most everyone. Availability of mobile devices is rapidly spreading throughout the world and making significant improvements in many lives.

It's worth taking a break from our obsession with how thin, light, and adaptable the hardware of mobile gadgets might be. While wondering what the next great phone or tablet may be is fun, it's not everything. What is important is how profoundly it's improving our lives, and the major roles these gadgets are assuming.

Mobile technology, in the form of phones, tablets, and notebooks, is making our lives better than ever before. It does this in many ways, not the least of which is making communications routine. We can be in touch with those we need to reach, whether work-related or personal in nature.

We can send important files almost anywhere in the world in seconds so business is addressed when it is critical. We can collaborate with co-workers in real-time no matter how spread out they may be. We can get confirmation or approval of vital decisions on the spot. Mobile technology has changed the way we do business for the better.

Villagers in third world countries who have no local healthcare can be diagnosed and have treatment prescribed by distant healthcare providers.

Communication is wonderfully impacting our ability to stay close to friends and family. We can talk to them anytime to find out how they are doing. We can have video chats to not only stay in touch, but to reach out and touch with a nearly physical presence. Loved ones can share in special occassions from great distances as if they are in the same room. We can make funny faces for our kids when we can't be there with them, which is far more important than it sounds.

Brave soldiers who are valiantly serving our country in distant lands can see their newborn child thousands of miles away.

Never have we been able to share so much with friends and family than we can today, and that is in great part due to mobile technology. Without mobile devices and the technology behind them, participation in social networking would never have grown as much as it has. Sharing seemingly trivial information like where we are, what we are doing, and what that looks like significantly impacts our relationships with friends and loved ones.

Mobile technology has given a voice to those otherwise cut off from the world during cataclysmic events. That voice can reach out for help when local tragedy strikes, and for the first time these people are not alone. They can share their plight using mobile communication through text, voice, and, most importantly, images, and bring about real change.

On a less profound note, we can do simple things like pay for parking at meters with our phones. We can find out which bus we need to take and where to find it. We can accurately find places we need to be even when we have no idea where they are. We can explore new places and find new things that interest us with little effort.

We have more information in our hand than at any time in history. It has become second nature to quickly look up helpful resources for whatever activity we need to do. Our gadgets can even anticipate what information we need and present it to us when it is most useful.

These daily uses of mobile technology, frivolous though they might seem, have transformed us into a society more tightly connected with each other. We have true friends through such connections even though we may have never met them in person. We can converse with like-minded individuals all over the globe, and debate those with different views just as easily. This stimulates conversations never before possible, and the resultant friendships are just as strong as those in "real life." They have become real life, as a matter of fact.

While mobile technology has improved our daily lives on many levels, it has profoundly raised the quality of life for many. Healthcare is an area that has embraced mobile technology, and while it's still in the infancy of adoption of this technology, it is already making profound improvements for many.

Healthcare providers can review home medical tests from anywhere and make crucial changes to the patient's care. Medical staff members can receive pacemaker tests remotely using a phone and change the programming of the device to address changes in the patient's condition. Doctors can see intricate diagnostic images on phones and find conditions that need immediate treatment, all while the patient is comfortable at home.

Villagers in third world countries who have no local healthcare can be diagnosed and have treatment prescribed by distant healthcare providers. Patients in areas experiencing significant problems with counterfeit medications can use a phone at the point of purchase to confirm if a medication is legitimate. This is saving lives and improving healthcare every day for those affected.

Children with ailments such as autism are using tablets to help them focus and communicate with those around them. Patients recovering from strokes and brain injuries are using tablets to great effect in their recoveries. Patients of all ages are using mobile devices to communicate with healthcare providers and loved ones as they never could before.

People born without hearing are having implants that can be programmed by wireless technology that allows them to hear their children speak for the very first time. Text messaging on phones has made a tremendous impact on communication for the deaf.

Diabetics can monitor their glucose level and have it wirelessly transferred to a small insulin pump that injects just the right amount to keep them where they need to be.

Blind individuals can use smartphones to not only improve their lives but also help achieve an incredible level of independence. Not only do these phones speak to the blind so they know what is displayed on the screen, they have software that can safely guide them out in busy cities. Mobile technology can help the blind pick out clothes for the day that match. The technology on smartphones can scan change received from a purchase and tell them how much was given.

This article just scratches the surface describing the benefits that mobile technology provides today. The technology is rapidly evolving and will help even more as time passes. We are in a fantastic era of mobile technology, and it is positively exciting to watch it unfold. When I stop and think of all the amazing benefits we are getting from this technology, I get goose bumps.

It's fun to wonder what the next tablet or phone might be like and what capabilities it might have, but that's just the little stuff. The improvements that are appearing in our daily lives, and society in general, is what really matters.

Mobile technology is enriching our lives. It is giving a voice to those without, either due to circumstance or medical conditions. It is making communication possible for those who live in a void. It is keeping distant loved ones close, and building friendships no matter the location of those involved. It is saving lives, and making healthcare possible for those otherwise without. It is bringing the world closer together — a truly amazing situation.

It's an exciting time to be watching mobile technology. There's no telling how far we will go with the technology of the not-too-distant future, but it will be a fantastic ride.

350 Word Essay on 5g Technology

How significantly technology has improved. 50 years back nobody would have imagined that a mobile connection would allow us to connect anywhere in the world. With 5g technology, we can connect virtually anywhere with anyone in real-time. This advanced broadband connection offers us a higher internet speed, which can reach up to two-digit gigabits per second (Gbps). This increase in internet speed is achieved through the use of higher-frequency radio waves and advanced technologies.

The world of telecommunication is evolving at a very fast pace. 3g connectivity was adopted in 2003, 4g in 2009, and 5g in 2019. the advent of 5G technology represents an enormous leap forward, promising to reshape the way we connect, communicate, and interact with the digital world.

The 5th Generation of mobile networks stands out from its predecessors in speed, latency, and the capacity to support a larger array of devices and applications. 5g speed is one of the most remarkable features, which allows us to download large amounts of files from the internet in mere seconds. Not only this, it also allows us smoother streaming of HD content and opens the door to transformative technologies.  Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) experiences, which demand substantial data transfer rates, will become more immersive and accessible with 5G.

What is the difference between 5g and 4g?

The difference between 5g and 4g technologies clearly highlighted in their speed, latency, frequency bands, capacity and multiple other uses.

  • The average downloading speed of 4g connectivity was 5 to 1000 Mbps (megabytes per sec). But with 5g, this speed increases 10 times.
  • 4G networks had a latency of around 30-50 milliseconds and 5g reduces latency to as low as 1 millisecond or even less.
  • 4G networks mainly use lower frequency bands below 6 GHz, but,  5g utilizes a broader range of frequencies, including lower bands (sub-6 GHz) and higher bands (millimeter waves or mmWave).
  • 4g was well-suited for broadband applications like web browsing, video streaming, and voice calls. 5g is capable of supporting a large number of applications from smart cities, critical communication services, and applications that demand ultra-reliable low-latency communication.

Mobile technology is technology that goes where the user goes. It consists of portable two-way communications devices, computing devices and the networking technology that connects them.

Currently, mobile technology is typified by internet-enabled devices like smartphones, tablets and watches. These are the latest in a progression that includes two-way pagers, notebook computers, mobile telephones (flip phones), GPS-navigation devices and more.

The communications networks that connect these devices are loosely termed wireless technologies. They enable mobile devices to share voice, data and applications (mobile apps).

Mobile technology is pervasive and growing. The number of smartphone users has climbed beyond 3 billion ¹  and the global mobile workforce is expected to reach 1.87 billion by 2022. ²

Radio networks that use distributed cell towers that enable mobile devices (cell phones) to switch frequencies automatically and communicate without interruption across large geographic areas. The same basic switching capability enables cellular networks to accommodate many users across a limited number of radio frequencies. ³

The current cellular service standard for most wireless communication. It uses packet switching technology, which organizes data into parts or p ackets for transmission and reassembles the information at the destination. 4G—“G” for generation—is reported to be 10x faster than 3G. And 5G, a much faster network, is coming still. 5G uses a set of aggregated frequency bands to unlock bandwidth and is approximately 20x faster than 4G.

Radio waves that connect devices to the internet through localized routers called hotspots. Short for wireless fidelity, wifi networks are like cell towers for internet access, but they don’t automatically pass service without establishing a wifi connection. Most mobile devices allow for automatic switching between wifi and cellular networks depending upon availability and user preference. ⁴

A telecommunications industry specification for connecting devices over short distances using short-wavelength radio waves. Bluetooth enables users to quickly connect or pair devices such as headsets, speakers, phones and other devices. ⁵

5G is the fifth generation of cellular wireless technology. Like 4G, it uses frequencies that are part of the radio spectrum, but 5G uses very high frequencies that offer more bandwidth. This means more data delivered at higher speeds to more devices. Imagine video streaming to a smartphone—5G will make it 10x better not just for an individual, but for anyone streaming a video at the same time.

Using its Road Day mobile app to upload claims information from the field, Amica Mutual Insurance Company achieved 25% to 50% estimated productivity gains for its workflow processes. The app enables adjusters to collaborate closely with customers in the field, improving the accuracy of claims and helping customers feel more involved.

Frogs are disappearing in Australia—4 of the 240 known species. To protect them, scientists needed a faster data-gathering model. Part of a crowd-sourcing approach, the FrogID app enables Australians to make audio recordings of frogs’ unique calls and upload them to an online database. The app also uses GPS coordinates to map frog populations.

City Furniture uses mobile technology to create an almost ideal shopping experience.  Customers can combine online research with the ability to physically touch items and interact with sales personnel. The mobile app used by sales associates on their tablets accesses real-time data, processes payments and schedules deliveries—all without leaving the customer’s side.

Scalability: Creating point solutions that don’t scale across an enterprise can be costly in terms of development, management and maintenance. Apps need to be conceived holistically with consideration for lines of business, processes and technical environments. Integration: Being able to connect logic and data services to the app is critical, whether the logic and data are on premises, on the cloud or in hybrid configurations. Reuse: Over 105 billion mobile apps were downloaded in 2018. ⁶  Many are, or can be modified or combined, for business applications. Using existing apps accelerates time-to-value and improves cost efficiency by taking advantage of domain and industry expertise built into the app. Cloud-based development: The cloud offers an efficient platform to develop, test and manage applications. Developers can use application programming interfaces (API) to connect apps to back-end data and focus on front-end functions. They can add authentication to bolster security, and access artificial intelligence (AI) and cognitive services. Mobility management: As mobile technology is deployed, organizations look to enterprise mobility management (EMM) solutions to configure devices and apps; track device usage and inventories; control and protect data; and support and troubleshoot issues. BYOD: Bring your own device (BYOD) is an IT policy that allows employees to use personal devices to access data and systems. Effectively adopted, BYOD can improve productivity, increase employee satisfaction and save money. At the same time, it presents security and device management questions that need to be addressed. Security: The mobile security battle is daunting in terms of volume and complexity. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a key weapon to discern security anomalies in vast amounts of data. It can help surface and remediate malware incidents or recommend actions to meet regulatory requirements from a central dashboard. Edge computing: One of the key advantages of 5G is that it can bring applications closer to their data sources or edge servers. Proximity to data at its source can deliver network benefits such as improved response times and better bandwidth availability. From a business perspective, edge computing offers the opportunity to perform more comprehensive data analysis and gain deeper insights faster.

Secure and careful management of mobile devices, content and apps is imperative—whether for a specific operating system, multiple device types or a mixed environment.

Move from mobile device management (MDM) to unified endpoint management (UEM). Use cloud, AI and analytics to support a complex endpoint and mobile environment.

Healthcare systems deal with disease prevention, early detection, diagnosis, investigation, and timely, affordable, and safe treatment. For the delivery of services in the health sector, communication is the key to linking the service provider and the patients. Mobile technology in the recent past has rendered various platforms of communications for the healthcare system. Thus, in health, mobile technology has greatly contributed to time management and cost reduction for healthcare at every level including hospital visits to individual appointments with doctors, hence the convenience. With advancements in mobile technologies and the growing number of mobile users, newer opportunities have opened up for the use of mobiles for patient care. Emerging information and communication technologies with the help of the Internet of Things (IoT) have been instrumental in integrating different domains of the health sector with mobile technology. Thus, the technology may have the potential to become powerful medical tools to support the health sector at all levels of care. In this review, the concept, applications, and advantages of mobile technology for health and the present pandemic have been discussed. It also discusses mobile health technology, as a support system for convenient and safer healthcare for public health, and the opportunities to improve its applications for unseen future health crises.

Introduction

“Crisis breeds the strength to cope with it. The Corona crisis of 2020 has highlighted the need to be able to help patients without getting exposed to the infection. We do not know how many such crises, how soon, will be faced in future, but we definitely know how to fight better next time” .

Health care systems work on communication to provide all health-related services in any setting. It is the most essential requirement to establish a link between the health care provider and the patient. In earlier times, physical visits of patients to a hospital or a health care facility were the prime requirement to communicate about the ailments to seek health services.

Once considered a luxury of the rich, mobile phones are now an everyday communication necessity for people across the globe. There are over 7 billion wireless subscribers worldwide, and about 3.9 billion (51.2%) have access to the Internet.[ 1 ] It is predicted that the global distribution of smartphone users will be more than 4.78 billion in 2021.[ 2 ]

Mobile phones have proved to be a useful tool to provide an instant channel for communication for transmitting demographic, clinical, and investigational and progress data to health care providers and timely, credible advice to health care seekers.[ 3 ] The newer technologies have been translated for their applications in healthcare domains and thus have developed a concept of “mobile Health.” The World Health Organization (WHO) has defined mobile Health (mHealth) as “medical and public health practice supported by mobile devices, such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants, wireless devices, and patient monitoring devices”.[ 4 ] Although the concept of mHealth has been differently defined, still the definition “the use of mobile computing, medical sensor, and communication technologies for healthcare” gives a clear concept of mHealth.[ 5 ]

Hence, mobiles and smartphones can provide excellent support for healthcare; however, their full potential and best use have not been realized yet. To achieve this, a comprehensive list of what healthcare needs from mobiles should be assessed and prepared. Its advantage can be leveraged to express its maximum potential by small modifications in hardware and software but much larger modifications in system ware and person ware especially addressing the present pandemic of COVID-19.

This review highlights the applications of mobile technology for health and emphasizes the safe, effective, and affordable ways to combat this corona pandemic.

Evolution of Mobile Technology in Telemedicine

Telemedicine (tm).

The WHO refers to telemedicine (TM) as “healing from a distance.” TM is an application of telecommunication and information technology that permits health care professionals to evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients sitting at a distance. Experts in the Shandong Province found that the TM platform can play a considerable role in managing patients during pandemic situations. The Shandong Province expert group invited Chinese authorities to use the “Cloud ICU” platform to share their ideas managing critically ill COVID-19 patients to help mitigate the global spread of COVID-19 using telemedicine.[ 6 ]

Telemedicine is of three types: interactive telemedicine, asynchronous telemedicine, and telemonitoring.[ 7 ] Interactive telemedicine allows patients and physicians to communicate in real-time using phone consultations and video conferences. Lab reports, imaging reports, videos, and other records are shared by health care providers with another specialist by asynchronous telemedicine. Although telemonitoring is a method that allows health care professionals to track a patient’s vital signs and activities from a distance, usually applied for high-risk and elderly patients.

TM benefits equally to patients and healthcare providers. Electronic medical records, artificial intelligence diagnosis, and medical streaming devices are technologies that are integrated with TM and assist providers to monitor patients in real-time and adjust treatment plans accordingly. Also, they are benefited from increased revenue in limited staff and office space. Senior citizens and patients in remote areas can access it from home and those with contagious diseases can minimize exposure. Substance abuse disorders are also treated using various TM strategies. This way the cost per patient is cheaper and offers cost-saving across the board.[ 8 ]

Conditions that need in-person examination such as skin diseases, and eye infections, can be replaced by photo-based consultation shared with the doctor to give and seek opinion on diagnosis, or lab tests via apps followed by treatment. Also, the doctor can develop e-prescriptions, which saves time and improve communication. The doctor can understand patients’ past medical records easily and can prescribe and renew the prescription from their comfort zone and also, these e-prescriptions cannot be tampered with by anyone. These e-prescriptions can be linked to Electronic health record(EHR), which enables one to log the information and get a complete picture of treatment given to the patient throughout. This model of healthcare through TM can be instrumental in pandemic situations, which demand social distancing.

Applications of mobile technology for health

Mobile phones have the potential to become a powerful medical tool to support healthcare at all levels [ Figure 1 ]. Some examples of their usage are as follow:

Mobile Technology applications for Healthcare systems and patients. Platforms for different domains of health

  • Estimating calories and exercise to monitor pulse rate or electrocardiogram
  • Communicating with doctors in an emergency
  • Reporting disasters with an automated transmission of exact location and time
  • Using artificial intelligence to help the diagnosis
  • Detecting adverse drug reactions or pointing out drug interactions
  • Follow-ups and monitoring a patient’s progress
  • Sharing results post-discharge to provide credible real-time data with the identity hidden or with patients’ consent for research to guide practice or policy in healthcare.

In developed nations, healthcare providers can electronically send information for prescribed medicines for a patient directly to the pharmacy or medical store, which can be picked up by the patient. This application of mHealth still needs to be implemented in developing nations.[ 9 ] Its use in healthcare is still in the early stage.[ 10 ] Also, the United States had made more than 50% of its hospitals integrated with mobile-optimized patient portals in 2015.[ 11 ]

Mobile technology has saved time by appropriate use of the technology such as by generating a unique identification number that collects data from all points the patient ever visits. i.e., from the outpatient department to the operation theater, emergency, in-patient department, imaging, pathology, microbiology, and post-hospital follow-up at home.[ 12 , 13 ] One can get better access to the latest drug details for faster decision-making. They automate a lot of paperwork that frees up a physician’s or a clinician’s time. With identity hidden or with the patient’s consent, it can also be used for medical research and analysis to provide guidelines in practice or healthcare policy. This may even strengthen evidence-based medicine, which serves as a great support to clinicians.

Distant communication is a need during the pandemic to safeguard healthcare providers and the use of mobiles ensures distancing.

APPS, a new way to healthcare

Mobile devices have set foot in clinical practice partly and maximally due to the availability of medical software applications or apps. These are software programs developed to run on mobiles and computers to fulfill the assigned tasks. Mobile technology, through healthcare apps [ Table 1 ] has benefited healthcare professionals (HCPs), as a point of care tool, with excellent clinical decision making for better patient care.[ 14 ]

mHealth Technology in Disease Prevention

To prevent and control any disease, there is always a need for coordinated communication to fight the disease best. There is a great contribution of mobile technology in disease-prevention programs, immunization programs, data collection, and motivating people for treatment adherence.[ 15 ]

A smartphone can comprehensively and correctly extract information from the patient on predesigned templates, and can easily use artificial intelligence to advise the standardized optimal “to-do list” and enhance the continuity of care through better maintenance of patient medical records, thus helping in disease prevention.[ 16 ]

Communicable diseases/infectious diseases

Mobile technology can be a boon in the prevention of communicable diseases such as COVID-19. The steps as suggested in pandemic situations such as social distancing, contact tracing, segregation, lockdown, and quarantine are some examples of preventive control measures and relevant to communicable diseases, that hit at transmission. Global positioning system (GPS) application of mobile technology can add the latitude–longitude information to the individual event-related data giving the crucial time, place, and person distribution of the event of interest (EoI). One example of the successful use of mHealth data in the development of disease prevention plans is the clean water campaign in Bihar, India (LINK). The use of mHealth data helped to conclude the water-borne transmission of acute encephalitis through a river that limited the epidemic in Bihar and thus helped reduce the number of cases from 1,347 in 2014 to 64 cases in 2015.[ 17 ]

Therefore, in 2020, there has been a growing use of mHealth in pandemic situations of COVID-19. Recently, a study has briefly reviewed the uses of mHealth in the recent epidemic/pandemic outbreaks worldwide to learn some lessons on how to deal with COVID-19.[ 18 ]

Non-communicable diseases

Multiple uses of mobile technology in the prevention and management of non-communicable diseases (NCD) has been in practice.[ 19 ] One important intervention is a short message, which helps in the self-management of chronic illness and follow-ups that are required.[ 20 ] The advantage of sending health-related messages in the community to communicate healthy practices has shown great outcomes.[ 19 ] A large number of populations is being benefitted from such technology in no time. Among most common NCDs, the usefulness of mHealth has shown great success in the management of diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease.[ 21 , 22 ] Short message service (SMS) for patients with diabetes has shown promising outcomes in disease management by compliance with medication regime.[ 21 , 23 ] Besides this, cancer patients are also greatly benefitted by mHealth-based applications by getting all possible information regarding their disease, even being distantly located.[ 24 , 25 ]

Mobile Technology for Community Health Programs

Mobile technology has greatly contributed to various community health programs, such as in part in declining the maternal and child morbidity and mortality rates and decreasing the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases.[ 26 ] This has been achieved by educating the community health workers (CHWs) about the use of mobile technology for their services. Their involvement in various activities conducted by the public health department and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are maternal, newborn and child health programs (MNCH), nutrition programs, vaccination programs, communicable disease control programs, and disease surveillance.[ 6 ] The appropriate use of mobile technology can improve the productivity of CHWs and reduce their workload.

Application of Mobile Technology in a Pandemic

Pandemic is considered an epidemic that has flared worldwide and has affected a large number of people.[ 27 ] COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by a virus named severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). First identified in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, it has spread worldwide leading to an ongoing pandemic.[ 28 , 29 ] It has remarkably shaken the global economy too.[ 30 ]

The recommended preventive measures for COVID19 include social distancing, wearing face masks in public, ventilation and air-filtering, hand washing, covering one’s mouth when sneezing or coughing, disinfecting surfaces, and monitoring and self-isolation for people exposed or symptomatic. Several vaccines are being developed and distributed. In the recent past, the mHealth platform has been a respite to deal with epidemics, with some proposed solutions.[ 31 ]

Mobile technology, a boon in pandemic

In view of the current COVID19 pandemic, which emphasizes social distancing, the benefits of mHealth need to be reinforced to encourage its use. A very good example of such application was used by the Government of India in form of the Arogya-Setu App, which spots at-risk people being positive with SARC-CoV-2 virus. This app was created after observing the pattern and understanding the pandemic. If our healthcare system would have been prepared with such applications of mobile technology from the very beginning, the number of people sacrificed in this pandemic would have been definitely less.

Figure 2 shows the strategy to be adopted by the use of mobile technology in the pandemic situation to save the lives of patients and healthcare resources.

The appropriate use of mobile technology has proved to be instrumental in ensuring distancing, saving on resources of the healthcare system, time, and human lives. Appropriate clinical advice to the stable patients at home and identifying critically ill patients for hospitalization.

Other benefits of mHealth in Corona pandemic

  • Early correct credible advice at low cost would have been a boon for the patients and a very strong weapon against the virus.
  • The data collected could be used with identity hidden for analysis in research and the feedback used to manage the pandemic in an evidence-based manner both for policy setting, making guidelines, and real-time management of patients.
  • Mobile could be used as a comprehensive follow-up tool by sending and receiving information as many times as necessary at a click of a button using a standard pilot-tested questionnaire.
  • The video of pandemic/epidemic density and how it is changing would have helped to decide containment measures and coordinate the system of fight back.
  • Using susceptible, infected, and immune models to estimate the time when the pandemic/epidemic would end would be instantaneously available.

Surveillance is very critical in COVID-19 due to its high prevalence, and mHealth can play a pivotal role to address the same. Improper contact tracing mechanisms of COVID-19 are the major hindrances in preventing its spread[ 32 ] and researches show that contact tracing and monitoring by mHealth are an appropriate way to reduce the spread.[ 33 , 34 ] Also, mHealth can be used for tracking any epidemic, as vaccine reminders, making the public aware of health-seeking behavior, and self-monitoring.[ 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 ]

Challenges and Barriers

Various challenges and barriers hinder the universal adoption and success of mHealth [ Table 2 ].

Challenges and barriers impacting the success of mHealth

Challenges/Barriers of mHealthOverall impact
Data securityConcerns with privacy, the social stigma of patients with HIV/AIDS, STDs, and psychiatric illness. Lack of basic authentication and threat of hacking.
Standard maintenanceVaried stakeholders for standard maintenance of mHealth apps, security, appropriateness, and suitability, transparency, safety, technical support, and updates.
Varied operating systemLack of homogeneity in the operating system (Microsoft window, iOs, Android, Blackberry, etc.) is a challenge for data transfer
Difficult discoverabilityPoor discoverability makes the apps not so user-friendly.
Inadequacy of developing countriesIlliteracy in developing countries hinders the large-scale acceptance of mHealth apps.
Mobile addictionOveruse of mobiles causing addiction.
OthersRoad accident, increasing E-waste

2). These snag needs to be overcome to give full umbrella coverage of mHealth technology to society.

The health sector is now transforming, with a paradigm shift from traditional care to technology cladded with wireless mobile health care, with a promise to bring tremendous benefits and opportunities for diagnosis, prognosis, treatment, and prevention of human diseases for a better quality of life.[ 39 ] Of the total US broadband users, 27% use at least one connected health device, and wireless fitness device (e.g., a smartwatch) or health apps are used by 25% of US citizens.[ 40 ] It indicates that the widely used health-based applications are of great help to the users as a guide for wellness but with limitations such as clinical guidelines for parameters that might be missing.[ 41 ]

For other challenges such as data security, it is highly desirable to design and implement new mHealth technologies to build reliable, accurate, efficient, and secure healthcare environments for optimal patient care.[ 42 ]

A critical issue to health informatics has been raised due to highly complex health data that need better machine learning and understanding of big data-oriented algorithms, models, systems, and platforms to support the analysis, use, interpretation, and integration of diverse health data.[ 43 ] This calls for further advancement in the technology after a thorough analysis of the need.

Most studies, including ours, so far have focused on the development of mobile applications, which concerns only with the patients’ mHealth use.[ 44 ] However, it is equally important to identify the primary mHealth stakeholders and the key issues that inhibit the more widespread use of applications. Also, important are the platforms in healthcare that need attention, changes required in the regulatory processes, and last but not the least the future mHealth research, to further add knowledge and fill gaps.[ 45 ]

To combat against COVID-19 pandemic, a global health movement developed a campaign with a mission to educate people worldwide regarding SARS-CoV-2 and a way to protect them from this virus. This was possible with the use of mHealth apps which were downloaded over 10 million times, with 6 million downloads on the first day.[ 46 ] It’s hard to believe, but still, there is no standard protocol to treat COVID-19 patients, thus preventive measures to control this pandemic become crucial and this becomes possible with the help of mobile apps.[ 47 ] It was because of these technologies that normal activities like teaching in medical fields continued even during the lockdown period. Also, patient care, be it a COVID-19 or a general patient, was maintained to some extent using telemedicine, thereby ensuring social distancing without compromising patient care. Also, COVID-19 patients were triaged based on information collected by smartphones and they were treated/segregated accordingly.[ 48 ]

mHealth is that powerful mobile technology that has the potential to change the face of health services. Thus, it needs to create its niche in the world of technology.

Although, it foresees many hurdles to overcome related to multiple domains of mHealth, which involves stakeholders, market, privacy, data security, funding, and research studies demonstrating efficacy and cost, which need to be addressed. The use of mobiles for healthcare has started with high hopes beyond communication amongst health providers. Although many studies have highlighted a brighter future for the health sector by the use of advanced technologies in smartphones,[ 9 ] formal standardized algorithms are more in the stage of being imagined rather than developed or used. During this catastrophe of the COVID-19 pandemic, mobile technology has set foot by its newer role and application to face such events in the future with minimal calamity.

What Is A Mobile Phone?

History of mobile phones.

  • Evolution of Mobile Phones

Advantages of Mobile Phones

Disadvantages of mobile phones.

Mobile phones, also known as cellular phones, are wireless and portable electronic devices. We can use mobile phones for different purposes, depending on our requirements. When a mobile phone was invented, it was only used for voice calling and text messaging. After several technological developments, mobile phones have now transformed into multi-featured devices offering numerous interpersonal and professional benefits. Moreover, technological advancements have made our life easier in this highly-competitive world. A mobile phone is one of those technologies that has massively improved our quality of living. A user can easily carry a mobile phone because of its portability.    Nowadays, we can find mobile phones available in different shapes and sizes. Many mobile developers have included numerous attractive technical specifications in mobile phones. People can now use it for various significant purposes, such as:

  • Sending emails
  • Video/voice calling loved ones
  • Using social media platforms
  • Buying groceries or food items
  • Shopping for clothes, stationeries, cosmetics, furniture, and other belongings
  • Text messaging/multimedia messaging
  • Browsing internet
  • Clicking pictures/ recording videos
  • Chatting on internet
  • Listening to songs, reading books, and news
  • Playing games
  • Storing important data

Now people term these mobile phones as ‘Smartphones” because of their smart features and specifications. However, mobile phones have played a pivotal role in this era of technological advancement and have become a ‘necessity’ for the majority of the global population.    Top

The history of mobile phones goes back to the year 1973. A Motorola executive and researcher named ‘Martin Cooper’ invented the first mobile handset on 3rd April 1973. He also made the first telephone call from the hand-held wireless equipment. The weight of this first mobile handset was approximately 1.1 kg. A fun fact about this invention is that Martin called his rival at Bell Labs, informing him that he was talking on a mobile phone. In 1983, Motorola became the first company to produce the first commercially hand-held cell phone. With Martin’s exceptional research and invention, the former became the Director of Motorola. This event of the mobile phone invention has marked its existence in history as it started a new era of global communication and also drastically improved our quality of life.    The mobile phones produced in those initial years were referred to as “Zero-generation” (0G) phones that have now transformed into ‘Fourth-generation’ (4G) and even ‘Fifth-generation” (5G) mobiles with several new and unique features. The “First-generation” (1G) mobiles were analogue, and people could use them only for voice calling and text messaging.  However, the processor of those 1G phones used to be extremely slow, and the phones also had low-quality sound systems. When the “Second-generation” (2G) mobile phones were launched in the global market, they were more compact and with better battery life. The arrival of 2G technology in 1992 came with several unique specifications, including faster connection and better quality signal. The “Third-generation” (3G) digital technology in mobile phones supported faster data transfer, while the “Fourth-generation” (4G) provided us similar benefits along with a high-speed processor and great internet connectivity on tablets and mobile phones. In today’s world, cell phones have become not only a means of communication but also a source of information and entertainment also.    Top

Evolution of Mobile Phones

Mobile phones were first invented in 1973, and since then, they are becoming more expensive depending on their respective features and specifications. It is not possible for people to carry a landline with them wherever they went. Thus, mobile phones have complemented landlines for travelers and busy workers. The ultimate evolution of mobile phones is quite interesting as they transformed from clumsy devices with slow signals to slick reliable devices that can be easily slipped into your purse or pocket. Let’s have a look at the evolution of mobile phones.

  • The first portable mobile phone

Martin Cooper, a former researcher of Motorola, invented the first-ever wireless and portable handset in 1973. In 1983, the world witnessed the first-ever portable mobile phone produced by Motorola. The cost was $4000, and owning this phone used to be considered a huge status symbol at that time. The former company updated that specific handset in 1989 and re-launched it with a fold-down keyboard. It was the first mobile phone people could easily flip.

  • The GSM era

The mobile industry witnessed a massive revolution with the Global System for Mobile communication’s (GSM) launch in Europe in 1991. With the introduction of Orbitel TPU 900, mobile phones were no longer for only business use. Mass production of these handsets made it easy for the common people to own a cost-effective consumer cell phone with a digital display. However, Nokia was the first company to produce cost-effective cell phones for the masses and launched Nokia 1011 in 1992.

  • Mobile phones went beyond calling

During 1992-1998, people witnessed a massive change in mobile phones’ features. Many cell phone companies introduced text messaging, downloadable ringtones, fun emojis, and built-in cameras during that time.

  • Feature phones with a splash of colors

Nokia was one of those companies that played an extraordinary role in the evolution of mobile phone technology. The first-ever mobile phone with a colorful display was launched by Siemens in 1997. In 1998, Nokia launched the first-ever fashion-oriented mobile phone series named “Xpress-on” with interchangeable covers. In 1999, the former produced a fully-colored feature phone named Nokia 7110. The most demanding feature of those cell phones was built-in cameras. In 2000, mobile phones with built-in cameras marked their existence in the world of photography. It almost changed people’s perspective that they can only click pictures with a camera. Gradually, cell phones started being used as an alternative to digital cameras and became the photographers’ favorite.

  • Mobile data revolution and more

In 2003, the 3G network was first introduced in the UK. It boosted the download speed up to 2MBPS. A company named RIM launched a mobile phone series named ‘BlackBerry’ that offered email facilities to the mass. Additionally, Sony-Ericsson Z1010 made video-calling immensely popular among the youth with its new front-facing camera.

  • When the Smartphone arrived

The year 2007 witnessed the revolutionary introduction of smartphones in the global market. Touchscreen cell phones gradually erased the traditional button method in phones.  Though the LG Prada series was the first touchscreen mobile phone in the market, the Apple iPhone series became successful in having a powerful brand value and superior touch screen potential. Smartphones became the center of modern life within a very short period. The following years have seen numerous extraordinary changes in smartphones’ features, including:

  • Introduction of 4G in 11 cities
  • Voice recognition feature from Google Voice
  • Apple launched Siri (A voice recognition device) in the market
  • Samsung added a built-in heart rate monitor to Galaxy S5

The ultimate Android and iPhone era (The present scenario) In today’s world, two of the most popular mobile models are iPhones by Apple and Android smartphones produced by a few renowned phone manufacturers, including Nokia, LG, HTC, Xiaomi, and Oppo. However, the first-ever Android phone was the ‘G1’ (launched in 2008) which had a slide-out keyboard and limited touchscreen access. During that time, Microsoft also decided to produce a brand new series of smartphones with their own windows operating system. Thus, they named the series “Windows Phone”.    The Android smartphones allow users to install third-party mobile applications that they can use for various purposes. For example, they can install WhatsApp and Facebook to communicate with their friends, Flipkart and amazon can be used for shopping online, Swiggy and Zomato for are there for ordering food online, or google maps can be used to navigate your way to a location. We can also install emailing apps, dating tools, word processors, and even video games on our smartphones. These smartphones include high-quality cameras that offer a larger-than-life experience of clicking extraordinary pictures and shooting incredible videos. Similarly, smartphones with 4G and LTE technology have ensured high-speed internet connectivity across the globe. Smartphones are considered to be powerful computers themselves and have started a revolutionary era of technological advancement from the time of their invention. Nowadays, smartphones have become an integral part of our everyday life that we cannot even think of living without them.    Top

A person can use mobile phones for different purposes depending on one’s needs. Mobile phone technology helps us to save our precious time, money, and energy. Essay on Technology

The word "technology" and its uses have immensely changed since the 20th century, and with time, it has continued to evolve ever since. We are living in a world driven by technology. The advancement of technology has played an important role in the development of human civilization, along with cultural changes. Technology provides innovative ways of doing work through various smart and innovative means.

Electronic appliances, gadgets, faster modes of communication, and transport have added to the comfort factor in our lives. It has helped in improving the productivity of individuals and different business enterprises. Technology has brought a revolution in many operational fields. It has undoubtedly made a very important contribution to the progress that mankind has made over the years.

The Advancement of Technology:

Technology has reduced the effort and time and increased the efficiency of the production requirements in every field. It has made our lives easy, comfortable, healthy, and enjoyable. It has brought a revolution in transport and communication. The advancement of technology, along with science, has helped us to become self-reliant in all spheres of life. With the innovation of a particular technology, it becomes part of society and integral to human lives after a point in time.

Technology is Our Part of Life:

Technology has changed our day-to-day lives. Technology has brought the world closer and better connected. Those days have passed when only the rich could afford such luxuries. Because of the rise of globalisation and liberalisation, all luxuries are now within the reach of the average person. Today, an average middle-class family can afford a mobile phone, a television, a washing machine, a refrigerator, a computer, the Internet, etc. At the touch of a switch, a man can witness any event that is happening in far-off places.

Benefits of Technology in All Fields:

We cannot escape technology; it has improved the quality of life and brought about revolutions in various fields of modern-day society, be it communication, transportation, education, healthcare, and many more. Let us learn about it.

Technology in Communication:

With the advent of technology in communication, which includes telephones, fax machines, cellular phones, the Internet, multimedia, and email, communication has become much faster and easier. It has transformed and influenced relationships in many ways. We no longer need to rely on sending physical letters and waiting for several days for a response. Technology has made communication so simple that you can connect with anyone from anywhere by calling them via mobile phone or messaging them using different messaging apps that are easy to download.

Innovation in communication technology has had an immense influence on social life. Human socialising has become easier by using social networking sites, dating, and even matrimonial services available on mobile applications and websites.

Today, the Internet is used for shopping, paying utility bills, credit card bills, admission fees, e-commerce, and online banking. In the world of marketing, many companies are marketing and selling their products and creating brands over the internet.

In the field of travel, cities, towns, states, and countries are using the web to post detailed tourist and event information. Travellers across the globe can easily find information on tourism, sightseeing, places to stay, weather, maps, timings for events, transportation schedules, and buy tickets to various tourist spots and destinations.

Technology in the Office or Workplace:

Technology has increased efficiency and flexibility in the workspace. Technology has made it easy to work remotely, which has increased the productivity of the employees. External and internal communication has become faster through emails and apps. Automation has saved time, and there is also a reduction in redundancy in tasks. Robots are now being used to manufacture products that consistently deliver the same product without defect until the robot itself fails. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning technology are innovations that are being deployed across industries to reap benefits.

Technology has wiped out the manual way of storing files. Now files are stored in the cloud, which can be accessed at any time and from anywhere. With technology, companies can make quick decisions, act faster towards solutions, and remain adaptable. Technology has optimised the usage of resources and connected businesses worldwide. For example, if the customer is based in America, he can have the services delivered from India. They can communicate with each other in an instant. Every company uses business technology like virtual meeting tools, corporate social networks, tablets, and smart customer relationship management applications that accelerate the fast movement of data and information.

Technology in Education:

Technology is making the education industry improve over time. With technology, students and parents have a variety of learning tools at their fingertips. Teachers can coordinate with classrooms across the world and share their ideas and resources online. Students can get immediate access to an abundance of good information on the Internet. Teachers and students can access plenty of resources available on the web and utilise them for their project work, research, etc. Online learning has changed our perception of education.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought a paradigm shift using technology where school-going kids continued their studies from home and schools facilitated imparting education by their teachers online from home. Students have learned and used 21st-century skills and tools, like virtual classrooms, AR (Augmented Reality), robots, etc. All these have increased communication and collaboration significantly.

Technology in Banking:

Technology and banking are now inseparable. Technology has boosted digital transformation in how the banking industry works and has vastly improved banking services for their customers across the globe.

Technology has made banking operations very sophisticated and has reduced errors to almost nil, which were somewhat prevalent with manual human activities. Banks are adopting Artificial Intelligence (AI) to increase their efficiency and profits. With the emergence of Internet banking, self-service tools have replaced the traditional methods of banking.

You can now access your money, handle transactions like paying bills, money transfers, and online purchases from merchants, and monitor your bank statements anytime and from anywhere in the world. Technology has made banking more secure and safe. You do not need to carry cash in your pocket or wallet; the payments can be made digitally using e-wallets. Mobile banking, banking apps, and cybersecurity are changing the face of the banking industry.

Manufacturing and Production Industry Automation:

At present, manufacturing industries are using all the latest technologies, ranging from big data analytics to artificial intelligence. Big data, ARVR (Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality), and IoT (Internet of Things) are the biggest manufacturing industry players. Automation has increased the level of productivity in various fields. It has reduced labour costs, increased efficiency, and reduced the cost of production.

For example, 3D printing is used to design and develop prototypes in the automobile industry. Repetitive work is being done easily with the help of robots without any waste of time. This has also reduced the cost of the products.

Technology in the Healthcare Industry:

Technological advancements in the healthcare industry have not only improved our personal quality of life and longevity; they have also improved the lives of many medical professionals and students who are training to become medical experts. It has allowed much faster access to the medical records of each patient.

The Internet has drastically transformed patients' and doctors’ relationships. Everyone can stay up to date on the latest medical discoveries, share treatment information, and offer one another support when dealing with medical issues. Modern technology has allowed us to contact doctors from the comfort of our homes. There are many sites and apps through which we can contact doctors and get medical help.

Breakthrough innovations in surgery, artificial organs, brain implants, and networked sensors are examples of transformative developments in the healthcare industry. Hospitals use different tools and applications to perform their administrative tasks, using digital marketing to promote their services.

Technology in Agriculture:

Today, farmers work very differently than they would have decades ago. Data analytics and robotics have built a productive food system. Digital innovations are being used for plant breeding and harvesting equipment. Software and mobile devices are helping farmers harvest better. With various data and information available to farmers, they can make better-informed decisions, for example, tracking the amount of carbon stored in soil and helping with climate change.

Disadvantages of Technology:

People have become dependent on various gadgets and machines, resulting in a lack of physical activity and tempting people to lead an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. Even though technology has increased the productivity of individuals, organisations, and the nation, it has not increased the efficiency of machines. Machines cannot plan and think beyond the instructions that are fed into their system. Technology alone is not enough for progress and prosperity. Management is required, and management is a human act. Technology is largely dependent on human intervention.

Computers and smartphones have led to an increase in social isolation. Young children are spending more time surfing the internet, playing games, and ignoring their real lives. Usage of technology is also resulting in job losses and distracting students from learning. Technology has been a reason for the production of weapons of destruction.

Dependency on technology is also increasing privacy concerns and cyber crimes, giving way to hackers.
