In 1990, dog expert Mark Derr published what has become a classic essay in The Atlantic called "The Politics of Dogs" and it is now available online. The byline reads, "An organization created to protect the purity of dog bloodlines has become...misguided in its view of 'quality' and guilty of encouraging destructive forms of inbreeding that have robbed dogs of traditional skills and left them vulnerable to crippling disease."

I've been asked repeatedly if I have access to the paper so that I could share it, and until yesterday I have not. Having this essay become widely available is a hugely important move because it concerns itself with a topic that simply won't go away—humans continuing to make designer dogs who live highly compromised lives, some of whom have trouble breathing, mating , and giving birth, and living extremely short lives —because of human desires. 1

Two people wrote to me: "Sadly, this essay could have been written today with few changes" and "This piece is disturbingly prescient."

I'm pleased Mark could take the time to answer a few questions and provide a unique historical perspective about this most important topic and many others 32 years after he wrote his seminal paper.

Marc Bekoff: Why did you write "The Politics of dogs?"

Mark Derr: I had been hearing for years that the American Kennel Club (AKC) was ruining dogs. I decided to find out what that meant.

MB: Who was your targeted audience?

MD: Thoughtful people interested in animals, especially dogs.

MB: How was it originally received?

MD: It was originally received as a total condemnation of the all too common practices of breeding dogs primarily for profit and looks. The fact that I showed how the talents for which particular breeds had been valued were being lost, and that I pointed out how collectively breeds were prone to hundreds of genetic diseases and defects, many lethal due to inbreeding and other deleterious practices, caused a ruckus that persisted some time and even now lingers.

Virtually every major follow-up study has confirmed what I found. After the piece ran, I heard from reporters around the country that they had been threatened with physical violence for writing negatively about the AKC, but I never sought to confirm that. The AKC did demand a retraction from The Atlantic , which was flatly refused. Every word in the article was fact-checked by the magazine's intrepid fact-checker.

MB: Have things changed over the past 32 years?

MD: They have changed in several ways. One is that as soon as the article appeared, the AKC went on what can only be called an imperial expansion annexing breed clubs--these clubs are in fact the membership of the AKC, which is a club of clubs. A score or more new breeds were added and no changes were made in breeding practices; that is to say, inbreeding has continued to produce genetic disasters.

The AKC has adopted the language of a dog's utility, weaving it into the narrative of what each breed is used for if it is in the working dog category; and it has opened some of its agility competitions to non-purebred dogs. But beyond that, it continues to perpetuate many myths about purebred dogs.

In terms of popular coverage of dogs, I routinely see themes from "The Politics of Dogs" struck in feature stories about dogs, even while some publications continue to print stories that perpetuate breed stereotypes.

MB: Are you pleased with these changes and what more needs to be done?

MD: The primary thing that needs to be done is to change the way dogs are bred—that is, if they have a purpose, they should be bred according to responsible genetic standards, and they should stop being bred to achieve a certain look that pleases their human companions. Beyond that, we need to start seeing the individual dog and treating the individual rather than our conception of what that animal should be.

MB: Is there anything else you'd like to tell readers?

MD: We need to remember that when we take on responsibility for an animal, we should expect they will be with us for a dozen years plus or minus and cannot be traded in on a new model the way some people trade in a car.

I am always amazed that these two different species—human and dog—forged a bond in the late Pleistocene that has remained strong despite the fact that we humans have often failed to uphold our end of the bargain.

Introduction.

There are various breeds of dogs and people are attracted to different breeds. Being a best mans friend dogs have attracted attention of man more than any other kind of pet.Some love dogs because of color or for different reasons. Pug is breed of dog that is very special since some people view it as ugly while others have seen beauty in their appearance. Either way pug is a kind of dog that is surely going to attract attention.

To come up with this breed the Chinese often crossbred their favorite dogs to merge their favorite qualities. Pug has various unique characteristics that are attributed to it. First, it has a short coat with very elastic skin. The wrinkles on its forehead are more conspicuous. Its head can easily be distinguished from that of other breeds. Today’s breed of pug has a head that is round when viewed at from the front. In relation to its head, the face is usually flat with sizeable amount of chin. The black ears of this breed of dog are not of one type but two, button ears and rose ears.

In the US Pugs are categorized as toy breed, compared to other dogs in the breed pugs are considered the largest. Their weight always ranges from fourteen pounds to eighteen pounds. This weight makes them healthy strong and vigorous. These characteristics make pug a very likeable pet. Its appearance is almost comparable to that of a bulldog but in this case the height of the pug is in balance and symmetrical to its weight. Their horizontal length is equal to its vertical height from the ground. When looking for a good breed of pugs people always look at the tail, this makes the tail very special for many people look and distinguishes a good breed of pug from its tail. For instance, people involved in the breeding of bugs always insist that the tail should be double curled although there are others that have a tail that is tightly curled and high above the back. It is not usually a feature of the pug to have a loose tail or a tail that is not curled. Color is always one of the features that people look for when choosing pets. In color the pug is either fawn or black.

Apart from its physical features its character is what has attracted most people to this breed of dog. In view of its behavior it is known that it is attentive and very quick to react to the tone of voice. This breed is not fearful and never shows any signs of violent behavior. It is very playful as it loves showoffs when around the children. Pugs are by nature funny, love showoffs. Pugs are sometimes sensitive to the environment for they develop a breathing problem as it needs a lot of water. As it gets tired quickly it should be given enough water. Pugs are a mixture or a crossbreed; this mixture makes pug to be special as compared to other pure breeds of dogs. Their appearance is diversified due to this mixture. This will attract attention because of this combination of various different colors. Cross breeding results in a breed that is more resistant to diseases as compared to pure breeds as the desirable characteristics are merged into one. Purebred dogs are susceptible to genetic diseases as compared to the dogs that have been crossbred. As a result pugs are strong and even healthier than the pure breeds. They live for a long period of time as they are not prone to so many diseases. Their lifespan is about twelve to fifteen years. Pugs have a tendency of being extremely social this advantages the humans as they are affectionate and love taking part in the daily activities of the family. Pugs are by nature small this is a benefit for when one is going for a vacation or traveling it becomes easy to travel with them as they are not excessively bulky.(Kristie Leong M.D 2007).

Although the pug is healthier than the pure breeds of dogs there are some health concerns that should be put into consideration when handling pug breed of dog. There are two parts of the pug’s body that are prone to ailments; the head and the legs. On the head pugs can be affected with cataracts, dry eyes, encephalitis and corneal ulcers. On the legs they can be affected with slipped stifles, and hip dysphasia. Skin mites’ affects pugs causing uneasiness. The pugs should be taken to the veterinary regularly to treat and prevent diseases.

During sunny days or humid and dry conditions pugs should be given specialized treatment to prevent their short nose from overheating due to the scorching sun. This is to say that they should always be kept indoors during this period. Just like human beings pugs do need grooming. Nails and teeth should always be checked and taken care of weekly. They are prone to shedding a lot of their fur off, therefore, they should be brushed regularly or if not once per week. Since they are prone to eye cataracts and other eye related diseases their eyes should be washed at least twice in week to prevent any cases of infection. They should always have a clean bathe regularly and should be allowed to use the bathroom daily so as to relieve at least seven times a day. Because of their short snout, pugs can become overweight easily and so owners of these species should check on this by feeding these dogs well. Even though exercises should be given to these animals, caution should be taken as they tire quickly. Exercises should not be overdone as pugs do have a problem in breathing. It should be noted that Pugs shed off their fur even though they have a short coat. It is disturbing since this shedding can stick the carpeting or clothing or even worse affect people who are allergic to this shedding. In some instances pugs become very noisy thereby irritating the owner. They have a lot of wheezing and snorting. There have some reports that pugs are stubborn since they have a mind of their own.

With all these views in mind it is safe to conclude that pug is the best breed of dog that one can have at home. The only important consideration to put in mind is to make sure that the pug is given the best training available together with good treatment and care.

WBEZ analyzed data on more than 84,000 dogs registered with the city to find Chicago’s top dogs, as well as which breeds are most common in which neighborhoods.

While Chicago requires pups over four months old to be registered with the city clerk, not every dog owner does. Plus, owners don’t always guess their dog’s breed correctly.

Even so, by analyzing dog registration records from the city clerk over the last five years, we learned quite a bit, and actually found out more about dog owners than the dogs themselves. Turns out, Chicago’s most popular dog breeds are mostly a reflection of the times — and of their two-legged companions.

The most common dog breed in Chicago — making up about 14% of all registered dogs — is a mixed-breed dog.

After that, the most popular dog breeds registered were pit bulls, Labrador retrievers, German shepherds, shih tzus and goldendoodles, in that order.

Of course, just because someone registers their dog as a German shepherd doesn’t mean it’s actually a German shepherd. Recently, DNA tests have made it possible to identify a dog’s exact genetic makeup by breed. And data from Embark, one company that sells genetic testing kits for dogs, shows that half of all dogs tested in Chicago have some pit bull DNA.

According to Armando Tejeda, a public information officer at Animal Care and Control, animal shelters often reflect the most popular dog breeds in the city at a given moment. And that changes over time.

“Before bully breeds, it was Rottweilers,” Tejeda said. “There were Rottweilers in pretty much every municipal shelter coming in. When ‘101 Dalmatians’ came out, Dalmatians were pretty big in shelters.”

Bully breeds, a grouping that includes several breeds including pit bulls and bulldogs, made up 42% of all dogs taken in at Chicago Animal Care and Control in the last decade, according to data from the municipal shelter.

One reason experts say so many pit bulls in particular end up in shelters is “backyard breeders” — typically unlicensed dog breeders that sell animals on sites like Craigslist — try to breed for certain characteristics, like a red or blue nose. And they end up with a lot of dogs in the process.

“You tend to see a lot of these pit bulls where they end up in the shelter system because [breeders] went to sell those dogs, couldn’t sell them and then just passed them off to the shelter,” said Abby Matzke, a shelter manager at Chicago Canine Rescue.

Some Chicago neighborhoods prefer certain dogs over others.

Labrador retrievers, for example, are most often found in North Side neighborhoods. And a lot of German shepherds live on the West and Southwest Sides.

As for the pit bull, the most commonly registered dog in Chicago in the last five years? They tend to be found on the South and West Sides.

“Pit bulls, I always say, are Chicago’s dog,” Matzke said.

If it turns out that your dream breed requires more care than you realized, there's no shame in choosing a lower-maintenance breed.

Jack Russell Terrier

Most challenging trait: Hyper

Jack Russells are tiny fireballs, and most owners don't realize quite what they're getting themselves into when they sign up. Jack Russells are intelligent, curious class clowns, but they're also energetic to an extreme. If their energy and high prey drive aren't channeled into exercise, training and playtime, they will bark, dig and destroy all the things you hold dear. They're also prone to being nippy and aggressive if they're not socialized continually.

Most challenging trait: Intense prey drive

Dachshunds are beloved in the dog community, but they're not for everyone. Just because mini dachshunds are small doesn't mean they're low-maintenance. They're mischievous and persistent and were bred to hunt small game. They need plenty of exercise just like larger breeds before they'll be ready to snuggle up under a blanket next to you.

They can be great with kids, but caution should be taken during playtime. Their long shape makes them more likely to injure their backs and expensive back surgery is common as they get older. Invest in a set of carpeted dog steps to help them get on the couch or bed to help stave off future back issues.

Most challenging trait: Willful

Samoyeds are the friendliest, most loving dogs imaginable, but lovability doesn't always equate to being low-maintenance. Like all northern breeds, Samoyeds were bred to work. They're strong, exuberant and thrive when they're treated as part of the family.

They're not built to be left home alone for hours while owners are at work. They're a vocal breed to begin with, but too much time alone may lead to anxious barking and destructiveness. Sammys also shed like nobody's business and are poorly suited to hot climates due to their heavy coat. Did we mention how stubborn they are? They have minds of their own and they'll listen to directions when they feel like it. Training a Samoyed is an adventure, so be prepared for a wild ride before getting one.

Most challenging trait: Strong and energetic

As far as large dog breeds go, Labradors aren't very high maintenance at all. The problem is that, as America's favorite dog breed, they're often portrayed as the "perfect" dog. Their behavior in commercials is more like an affectionate stuffed animal than an animal. People are taken by surprise when they adopt a Labrador puppy and discover it needs just as much training and attention as any other breed.

Labs are amazing dogs, but they also shed, drool, eat endless kibble and make messes, as dogs do. Labs are also known for a prolonged puppy phase, remaining highly energetic and playful until they're at least three or four. For families with kids, that can be a plus, but if owners are expecting a mellow canine, a teenage Lab is a rude awakening. They're prone to pull on leashes and jump up when they're excited — and all of that requires time and patience to change.

French Bulldog

Most challenging trait: Clingy

French bulldogs, fondly known as Frenchies, are a prime example of velcro dogs. Their velvety coats and smushed faces have won over thousands of hearts, but they're needier than most owners realize. Frenchies can be extremely clingy. If their mom or dad is out of sight, some Frenchies experience extreme anxiety, barking neurotically until their owner returns. Whether this behavior is endearing or annoying is a matter of preference. They can also be heavy chewers and without a heavy-duty bully ring, they'll take out their stress on the leg of the kitchen table.

They also love food and are highly stubborn. If you give in to begging once, you're doomed. Frenchies also need ongoing leash training to keep them from pulling, which is both annoying for owners and a risk factor for future back and neck problems.

Most challenging trait: Workaholics

The inclusion of border collies on this list should tell you something. Collies, like most dogs on this list, aren't bad dogs. They can be incredible, loyal companions, but pet parents often don't realize how much work goes into training a high-energy working dog breed. (Or any breed, for that matter!)

Border collies were bred to herd livestock. They love to please their owners and they love to work. If you don't give them a task to complete, however, they don't know what to do with themselves. They need outlets for their herding instincts and energy levels, or they're likely to chase bikes, cars and pedestrians instead of sheep. Border collies are also very bright, so owners need to make sure they're exercising the dog's mind as well as their legs.

Most challenging trait: Potentially aggressive

When people adopt a small dog with challenging traits, the biggest risk is putting up with a chihuahua with a big attitude. With a large dog, the biggest risk is someone getting severely injured and having the dog facing euthanasia. Rottweilers are not inherently aggressive, but they have intense instincts to guard and protect. They need to be trained with a gentle, authoritative hand from the start.

When Rottweilers grow up, they're typically large and strong enough to overpower their owners. Because of this, it's critical to teach them to follow your command early on when it's still possible to physically control their behavior if necessary. A full-grown Rottweiler who thinks it's the head of the pack is an accident waiting to happen.

Most challenging trait: Escape artists

Huskies are extremely popular thanks to their beautiful eyes and comedic personalities. They're beautiful dogs that eagerly carry on conversations with their human family members. These conversations can be more like arguments, however. They're strong-willed and are built to pull sleds on frigid Siberian tundras.

Without strong leadership and plenty of opportunities to burn off that energy, they become masterful escape artists. Huskies have been known to learn how to open doors, scale furniture to climb out windows and bolt out any open door. They also prefer cold climates, getting extra needy and destructive when they're stuck in a warm house all summer.

Most challenging trait: Difficult to train

After the doge meme took off, there was a sharp uptick in the number of adopted Shiba Inus – Followed by a rise in Shiba Inus surrendered at shelters. Their moderate size and teddy bear-like faces lead new dog owners to expect a sweet, trainable pet, but Shibes are quite headstrong. They're one of the most independent of dog breeds. They'll gladly play with you, but they tend to be more aloof and self-centered than snuggly.

Shiba Inus are loyal dogs, but their high prey instinct and athletic build make them a challenge for new pet owners. They also must be kept on a leash at all times because any training you've done goes straight out the window if a Shiba Inu sees a squirrel.

Akitas are like they giant version of the Shiba Inu, so if one of those sounds like a headache, don't even think about getting an Akita. They were bred to hunt large game and, even several generations removed, they're more interested in working than lounging.

They're very protective dogs with a natural suspicion of new people and pets. Without the leadership of an experienced dog owner, Akitas can become aggressive with other dogs, impossible to walk and a risk to any visitors walking in the door.

German Shepherd

German shepherds are often trained as service dogs, police dogs, military dogs or numerous other jobs only a dog can do. They adore training, which is where the challenges arise. German shepherds aren't meant to be casual playmates and couch potatoes.

They need daily mental and physical stimulation or they become prone to dog aggression, guarding, dominance behaviors and separation anxiety. The breed is also known for several health complications, including arthritis and hip dysplasia that can be expensive, painful and disabling.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier

Most challenging trait: Suspicious and demanding

Staffordshire bull terriers can be the best dogs or the worst dogs, and much of that comes down to their owners. They were used in dog fights for so long that they developed a nasty reputation. Most of that is undeserved, but the decision to get a bull terrier still requires research and understanding of the breed's unique needs.

They're highly trainable, but bull terriers take practically as much energy to raise as bringing up a toddler. They do have powerful jaws, and they tend to be reluctant to let go once they bite down. Because of that tendency and their muscular build, pit bulls can become dangerous in the hands of an inexperienced owner. This is especially true for owners who want a bull terrier for protection. They are protective, but people should never underestimate how much time and effort goes into training a guard dog safely.

Most challenging trait: Wary of strangers, messy

Mastiffs are loyal and loving, which is what draws people to them, but their loyalty can come with a dark side. They're protective of their families to the extent that they may not trust house guests if they're not socialized well. They're also extremely drooly and not everyone is a fan of slipping in puddles of dog slobber.

The biggest risk of owning a mastiff, however, is heartbreak. These gentle giants rarely live past the age of 10 and losing a beloved friend after such a short time is too much for some.

Most challenging trait: High prey drive

There are several types of spaniels, but all of them have intense hunting instincts. Anyone hoping to let their dog roam the yard will face a rude awakening when their spaniel goes mad chasing birds and neighborhood cats. Physical activity is mandatory and most spaniels have long coats that require a consistent grooming routine.

Spaniels are also velcro dogs that can become emotional and stressed when they're left alone. Some spaniels bark non-stop until their owners return, even if they only ran out to run a few errands. Spaniels are a better choice for people who work from home since most neighbors aren't a fan of being serenaded by a nervous spaniel all day.

Australian Cattle Dog

Australian cattle dogs take the cake for being the best and the worst at the same time. They were bred to keep livestock in check and they're excellent at what they do. They're superb problem solvers and have enough endurance to work all day long. In an average backyard, however, that's not necessarily a good thing.

Australian cattle dogs go crazy if they're understimulated and bored. They'll quickly begin outsmarting their owners to find outlets for their energy. They can be so demanding that people decide they're not cut out for their care and rehome them. Moral of this story: Before you get a dog of any breed, know what you're getting yourself into.

An Australian state has banned specific breeds of dog and brought in jail time for an owner whose pet attacks.

The Sunshine State has banned five “dangerous’’ dog breeds and toughened penalties for owners if their dog attacks.

The Agriculture and Fisheries and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2023 passed the Queensland parliament on Thursday, tightening the leash on dogo argentinos, fila brasileiros, japanese tosas, pit bull terriers, and the perro de presa canario or presa canario.

Tougher penalties include up to three years jail and an $108,000 fine if an owner encourages an attack when the dog inflicts serious injures or kills a person. Failing to control your dog now brings sterner penalties, including two years in jail if the animal attacks.

“Higher penalties, up to and including imprisonment, are needed to support community safety and emphasise the importance of keeping dogs under control to prevent attacks,” it says in the legislation’s explanatory note.

More than two-thirds of public respondents (69 per cent) supported the ban.

Agriculture Minister Mark Furner said: “Queenslanders told us they wanted tougher laws to combat dangerous dogs and the Miles government has delivered.

“We will keep working with the community to get the message out about these new laws and help people with at-risk dogs to comply to make the community safer,” the minister said.

People who currently own one of the now-banned dogs do not have to forfeit their animal.

The affected breeds were already subject to restricted breed permits.

Importing these breeds into Australia is banned, but states and territories have different desexing and breeding rules.

In Queensland parliament on Thursday, LNP MP Graham Perrett said: “It took four dog attacks in one week last April and media pressure on the former premier to get the minister to adequately respond.”

Lockyer LNP MP Jim McDonald said “many local governments and the RSPCA” had concerns about the legislation based on similar and now-altered Victorian laws.

“Even DNA testing was inconclusive because of the crossbred nature of some of these dogs. It is very hard to get a purebred DNA marker for these animals,” Mr McDonald said.

Labor MP Chris Whiting said Lizzie Wingrove, 15 of Bancroft, was in the parliament to see the bill passed. Lizzie underwent facial surgery after an attack seven years prior.

Her mother Veronica “fought to get improvements in the law so that in such situations her family is safe and secure and to make sure that other families are safe and secure”, Mr Whiting said.

The dog that bit Lizzie was a neo mastiff. It took a chunk out of her cheek, which required plastic surgery.

Twice the courts ruled the neo mastiff should be destroyed, but the dog’s owners appealed and a third court ruled the dog should be allowed to return home, to the same street the Wingroves lived on.

The Queensland RSPCA said it was disappointed certain breeds were banned by law.

“Scientific evidence does not support the assumption that certain breeds of dog are inherently dangerous or that the act of banning those breeds will decrease the rate of dog bites or attacks,” an RSPCA spokesperson said.

Blanket bans did not consider the complexities of dog behaviour and the role of socialisation, rearing, training, owner behaviour, environment and circumstances, the spokesperson said.

Stronger penalties were a deterrent, but the onus was the owner, they said.

“Every dog owner has a responsibility to ensure their dog isn’t a danger to other people and other animals,” they said.
