One major change to the Common Application in the 2021-22 admissions cycle is the addition of a new essay prompt. Option #4 now reads, "Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?"

This new prompt replaces the earlier question about solving a problem : "Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma--anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution." Keep in mind that colleges and universities still want to learn about students interested in solving significant problems, and you still have the "Topic of Your Choice" option if you feel your essay would fit well under the former option #4.

According to Common App , the new prompt serves a couple purposes. First, it replaces a prompt that wasn't very popular among college applicants. More importantly, it gives applicants the opportunity to write about something positive at a difficult time in world history. Rather than write about significant problems, challenges, and anxieties, the new prompt #4 invites you to share something heartfelt and uplifting.

Highly selective schools end up rejecting thousands of well-qualified applicants, and those decisions will often come down to questions of character rather than GPA and SAT scores.

Think of it this way: when a college is choosing between two students who are academically strong and impressive on the extracurricular front, they will choose the student who seems to be the most kind and generous. Admissions officers are building a campus community with their admissions decisions, and they want to create a community filled with students who appreciate others, build each other up, and recognize the contributions of peers, staff, and professors. They want to admit students who will be kind roommates, collaborative lab partners, and supportive team members.

Chris Peterson, an assistant director of admissions at MIT, wrote a blog post in which he identified three essential qualities for getting into one of the world's most selective schools: do well in school, pursue your passion, and be nice. He notes that this last quality "cannot be overstated." MIT is not a Common Application member, but the point applies perfectly to the value of prompt #4. A winning essay doesn't say "me, me, me!" It shows that you are not only an accomplished person, but also someone who knows how to say "thank you."

We need to recognize that we always have room for improvement, and we need to support each other as we work towards that goal. I can now see that her lessons were about much more than soccer, and thanks to her I am not just a better athlete, but a better student, peer, sister, and community member.

The first example describes the writer's soccer experience. Nothing in the passage looks inward to analyze the importance of Coach Strauss to the writer's personal awareness and development. The second passage succeeds on this front—it expresses gratitude for Coach Strauss and the way that her lessons helped the writer grow.

"Something" and "Someone"

A nice feature of the Common Application is that all of the essay prompts are designed to give you a lot of latitude in how you respond. The words "something" and "someone" in the new prompt #4 are deliberately vague. You can write about anyone and anything. Possible choices for the person you focus on include

  • A teacher who helped you realize your potential or see the world in a new way.
  • A coach who taught you valuable skills.
  • A family member whose support, love, or guidance helped you become the person you are today.
  • A peer who was always there for you in challenging times.
  • A student you mentored or tutored who ended up teaching you something valuable in the process.
  • A member of your church or community who had a meaningful and positive impact on your life.

The wording of the prompt implies that the "someone" is a living person, so you'll want to avoid writing about an author, God, a pet, or a historical figure (but feel free to use prompt #7 for these topics).

As you think about the "something" that the person did for you, make sure it is meaningful. It needs to be something that has changed you in a positive way.

"Surprising"

When the prompt states that you should write about something that has made you "happy or thankful in a surprising way," don't get too hung up on that word "surprising." This doesn't mean that you need to be shocked or overwhelmed by whatever it is that a person did for you. Don't think of the term "surprising" as something that made you speechless and caused an adrenalin rush. It does not need to be something earth-shattering or even unusual. Rather, the "surprise" can simply be something that expanded your world view, made you think about something you hadn't considered before, or caused you to appreciate something new. Some of the best essays focus on something small or subtle that changed you in a meaningful way.

"Gratitude"

The essay's focus on "gratitude" and thankfulness means that you absolutely must show appreciation for someone other than yourself. One main purpose of this essay, in fact, is to show that you recognize the contributions that others have made to your personal journey. Be generous. Be kind. Show that you value the people who have made you into the person you are.

"Affected" and "Motivated"

Here's the tricky part. Essay #4 is all about recognizing someone else and showing gratitude for the way in which that person has enriched your life. That said, every college application essay needs to be about you. The admissions folks aren't really interested in learning about someone else. They are interested in learning about the student they are considering for admission.

This means you have a careful balancing act to perform with essay option #4. You need to write about the person who contributed to your life in a meaningful and surprising way, but you also need to be introspective and present why that person was so important to you. What did you learn from the person? How did you grow? How did that person change your world view, strengthen your convictions, help you overcome an obstacle, or give you a new sense of direction?

When you answer questions like these, you are writing about yourself. The true goal of this essay is to show that you are a grateful, kind, thoughtful, introspective, and generous person. The focus isn't so much on the person you are writing about, but your ability to cherish that person.

Avoid These Mistakes

You can write about anyone who was important to you, and your gratitude can be for something large or small as long as it affected you in a meaningful way. There are, however, several mistakes you want to avoid when responding to the prompt:

Don't display ego . Prompt #4 is about acknowledging the important contributions others have made to your life, so a boastful or egotistical tone will be entirely out of place. If at its heart your essay says "Coach Strauss helped make me into the award-winning national champion I am today," you've missed the mark.

Do more than describe . Make sure you "reflect" and explore how the person "affected" and "motivated" you. A winning essay needs to be thoughtful and introspective. If you spend the entire essay describing the person who has made you grateful, the admissions folks won't get to know you better and your essay won't have done its job.

Don't be clever with the "someone." Write about a real living human being who has enriched your life in a direct way. Don't write about yourself, God, Abe Lincoln, or Harry Potter. You also don't want to write about a sports idol or musician—while they may have influenced you, they didn't actually do something specifically "for you."

Attend to the Writing

Never forget that your Common Application serves not just to help the admissions folks get to know you, but also to show that you are a capable writer. No matter what your major is, a significant part of your college GPA is going to stem from writing. Successful college students can write clear, engaging, error-free prose. You'll want to pay careful attention to your essay's style , tone, and mechanics. At a highly selective university with more qualified applicants than can be admitted, the difference between an acceptance and rejection can come down to some glaring grammatical errors in the essay.

If you aren't confident in your writing ability, seek help. Have multiple people read your essay. Get feedback from parents and peers, Even more valuable will probably be feedback from your high school counselor and English teacher, for they have more experience with personal essays.

A Final Note for Common Application Option #4

This essay prompt can be approached is so many different ways, but at its heart, the essay needs to accomplish one thing: it needs to show that you are the type of person the college wants to join their campus community. Make sure you come across as someone who is kind, generous, and thoughtful. Show that you care about good writing by crafting an engaging essay that is free of any significant errors. Finally, don't be afraid to let your personality shine. Don't hold back (within reason) if you are a quirky or humorous person. The essay needs to sound like you.

Things I Am Grateful For

It was only during the time of COVID-19 pandemic that I came to realise what it felt like to be grateful. I expressed my appreciation for my family and friends for being there every step of the way. I contracted COVID-19 and it took me quite some time to recover. My family, even though, could not be in close proximity, took care of me and made sure I was feeling better at the end of the day. My friends video called me every day and spent time with me virtually. I also realised how I took everyday comforts for granted—such as shelter, good food, clothes. People were struggling to make their ends meet during the pandemic and I had the comfort of staying at home and also earning a living. It was after 2020 that I started maintaining a gratitude journal and also contributed to society through social work.

Gratitude also leads to greater personal growth by helping you see your flaws with more clarity. It can even lead to success!

It is a feeling of appreciation, and it can make your life more joyful. It’s about looking for the good in your life rather than focusing on the negative.

It can even be a powerful antidote to stress and depression. You don’t need any special skills to practice gratitude, but you do need to remember these five steps:

  • Notice what you’re grateful for
  • Think about how it makes you feel
  • Express gratitude verbally and mentally
  • Practice giving back

2) The benefits of gratitude

When you practice gratitude, you can experience increased self-esteem and resilience. For example, people who are in the habit of expressing gratitude have been shown to have more optimism and can think more optimistically.

You don’t need a lot of money, time, or effort to make your life happier and healthier. Here are different easy ways to start practicing gratitude.

  • Notice the good: Let’s start with the easiest place to start — noticing the good things that happen in your life. This is a very simple exercise and it will take less than five minutes a day to notice things. As you do this, you may discover something positive about every day and this will remind you how lucky you are.
  • Think about how it makes you feel: Next, stop thinking about how you feel when you observe your blessings. You’ll be practicing gratitude and if you’re thinking about how you feel, you won’t be aware of your blessings.

How gratitude can help you through hard times, it's easy to feel grateful when life is good, says robert emmons . but when disaster strikes, gratitude is worth the effort..

A decade’s worth of research on gratitude has shown me that when life is going well, gratitude allows us to celebrate and magnify the goodness. But what about when life goes badly? In the midst of the economic maelstrom that has gripped our country, I have often been asked if people can—or even should—feel grateful under such dire circumstances.

My response is that not only will a grateful attitude help—it is essential . In fact, it is precisely under crisis conditions when we have the most to gain by a grateful perspective on life. In the face of demoralization, gratitude has the power to energize. In the face of brokenness, gratitude has the power to heal. In the face of despair, gratitude has the power to bring hope. In other words, gratitude can help us cope with hard times.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not suggesting that gratitude will come easily or naturally in a crisis. It’s easy to feel grateful for the good things. No one “feels” grateful that they have lost a job or a home or good health or has taken a devastating hit on their retirement portfolio.

But it is vital to make a distinction between feeling grateful and being grateful. We don’t have total control over our emotions. We cannot easily will ourselves to feel grateful, less depressed, or happy. Feelings follow from the way we look at the world, thoughts we have about the way things are, the way things should be, and the distance between these two points.

But being grateful is a choice, a prevailing attitude that endures and is relatively immune to the gains and losses that flow in and out of our lives. When disaster strikes, gratitude provides a perspective from which we can view life in its entirety and not be overwhelmed by temporary circumstances. Yes, this perspective is hard to achieve—but my research says it is worth the effort.

Remember the bad

Trials and suffering can actually refine and deepen gratefulness if we allow them to show us not to take things for granted. Our national holiday of gratitude, Thanksgiving, was born and grew out of hard times. The first Thanksgiving took place after nearly half the pilgrims died from a rough winter and year. It became a national holiday in 1863 in the middle of the Civil War and was moved to its current date in the 1930s following the Depression.

Why? Well, when times are good, people take prosperity for granted and begin to believe that they are invulnerable. In times of uncertainty, though, people realize how powerless they are to control their own destiny. If you begin to see that everything you have, everything you have counted on, may be taken away, it becomes much harder to take it for granted.

So crisis can make us more grateful—but research says gratitude also helps us cope with crisis. Consciously cultivating an attitude of gratitude builds up a sort of psychological immune system that can cushion us when we fall. There is scientific evidence that grateful people are more resilient to stress, whether minor everyday hassles or major personal upheavals. The contrast between suffering and redemption serves as the basis for one of my tips for practicing gratitude: remember the bad.

It works this way: Think of the worst times in your life, your sorrows, your losses, your sadness—and then remember that here you are, able to remember them, that you made it through the worst times of your life, you got through the trauma, you got through the trial, you endured the temptation, you survived the bad relationship, you’re making your way out of the dark. Remember the bad things, then look to see where you are now.

This process of remembering how difficult life used to be and how far we have come sets up an explicit contrast that is fertile ground for gratefulness. Our minds think in terms of counterfactuals—mental comparisons we make between the way things are and how things might have been different. Contrasting the present with negative times in the past can make us feel happier (or at least less unhappy) and enhance our overall sense of well-being. This opens the door to coping gratefully.

Try this little exercise. First, think about one of the unhappiest events you have experienced. How often do you find yourself thinking about this event today? Does the contrast with the present make you feel grateful and pleased? Do you realize your current life situation is not as bad as it could be? Try to realize and appreciate just how much better your life is now. The point is not to ignore or forget the past but to develop a fruitful frame of reference in the present from which to view experiences and events.

There’s another way to foster gratitude: confront your own mortality. In a recent study, researchers asked participants to imagine a scenario where they are trapped in a burning high rise, overcome by smoke, and killed. This resulted in a substantial increase in gratitude levels, as researchers discovered when they compared this group to two control conditions who were not compelled to imagine their own deaths.

In these ways, remembering the bad can help us to appreciate the good. As the German theologian and Lutheran pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer once said, “Gratitude changes the pangs of memory into a tranquil joy.” We know that gratitude enhances happiness, but why? Gratitude maximizes happiness in multiple ways, and one reason is that it helps us reframe memories of unpleasant events in a way that decreases their unpleasant emotional impact. This implies that grateful coping entails looking for positive consequences of negative events. For example, grateful coping might involve seeing how a stressful event has shaped who we are today and has prompted us to reevaluate what is really important in life.

Reframing disaster

To say that gratitude is a helpful strategy to handle hurt feelings does not mean that we should try to ignore or deny suffering and pain.

The field of positive psychology has at times been criticized for failing to acknowledge the value of negative emotions. Barbara Held of Bowdoin College in Maine, for example, contends that positive psychology has been too negative about negativity and too positive about positivity. To deny that life has its share of disappointments, frustrations, losses, hurts, setbacks, and sadness would be unrealistic and untenable. Life is suffering. No amount of positive thinking exercises will change this truth.

So telling people simply to buck up, count their blessings, and remember how much they still have to be grateful for can certainly do much harm. Processing a life experience through a grateful lens does not mean denying negativity. It is not a form of superficial happiology. Instead, it means realizing the power you have to transform an obstacle into an opportunity. It means reframing a loss into a potential gain, recasting negativity into positive channels for gratitude.

A growing body of research has examined how grateful recasting works. In a study conducted at Eastern Washington University, participants were randomly assigned to one of three writing groups that would recall and report on an unpleasant open memory—a loss, a betrayal, victimization, or some other personally upsetting experience. The first group wrote for 20 minutes on issues that were irrelevant to their open memory. The second wrote about their experience pertaining to their open memory.

Researchers asked the third group to focus on the positive aspects of a difficult experience—and discover what about it might now make them feel grateful. Results showed that they demonstrated more closure and less unpleasant emotional impact than participants who just wrote about the experience without being prompted to see ways it might be redeemed with gratitude. Participants were never told not to think about the negative aspects of the experience or to deny or ignore the pain. Moreover, participants who found reasons to be grateful demonstrated fewer intrusive memories, such as wondering why it happened, whether it could have been prevented, or if they believed they caused it to happen. Thinking gratefully, this study showed, can help heal troubling memories and in a sense redeem them—a result echoed in many other studies.

Some years ago, I asked people with debilitating physical illnesses to compose a narrative concerning a time when they felt a deep sense of gratitude to someone or for something. I asked them to let themselves re-create that experience in their minds so that they could feel the emotions as if they had transported themselves back in time to the event itself. I also had them reflect on what they felt in that situation and how they expressed those feelings. In the face of progressive diseases, people often find life extremely challenging, painful, and frustrating. I wondered whether it would even be possible for them to find anything to be grateful about. For many of them, life revolved around visits to the pain clinic and pharmacy. I would not have been at all surprised if resentment overshadowed gratefulness.

As it turned out, most respondents had trouble settling on a specific instance—they simply had so much in their lives that they were grateful for. I was struck by the profound depth of feeling that they conveyed in their essays, and by the apparent life-transforming power of gratitude in many of their lives.

It was evident from reading these narrative accounts that (1) gratitude can be an overwhelmingly intense feeling, (2) gratitude for gifts that others easily overlook most can be the most powerful and frequent form of thankfulness, and (3) gratitude can be chosen in spite of one’s situation or circumstances. I was also struck by the redemptive twist that occurred in nearly half of these narratives: out of something bad (suffering, adversity, affliction) came something good (new life or new opportunities) for which the person felt profoundly grateful.

If you are troubled by an open memory or a past unpleasant experience, you might consider trying to reframe how you think about it using the language of thankfulness. The unpleasant experiences in our lives don’t have to be of the traumatic variety in order for us to gratefully benefit from them. Whether it is a large or small event, here are some additional questions to ask yourself:

  • What lessons did the experience teach me?
  • Can I find ways to be thankful for what happened to me now even though I was not at the time it happened?
  • What ability did the experience draw out of me that surprised me?
  • How am I now more the person I want to be because of it? Have my negative feelings about the experience limited or prevented my ability to feel gratitude in the time since it occurred?
  • Has the experience removed a personal obstacle that previously prevented me from feeling grateful?

Remember, your goal is not to relive the experience but rather to get a new perspective on it. Simply rehearsing an upsetting event makes us feel worse about it. That is why catharsis has rarely been effective. Emotional venting without accompanying insight does not produce change. No amount of writing about the event will help unless you are able to take a fresh, redemptive perspective on it. This is an advantage that grateful people have—and it is a skill that anyone can learn.

6 Classic Works of Literature on Gratitude

With Thanksgiving around the corner and the end of the year nearing the horizon, there comes the need for gratitude and reflection. Feeling grateful during difficult times like these can feel tough, but fostering gratitude in strenuous situations can actually help alleviate negative emotions and even change the brain over time . And what better way to channel gratitude than reflecting with a classic work of literature that promotes this positive feeling! The following is a list of six classic works of literature on gratitude, written by some of the greatest names in literature.

1. Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Friendship”

Emerson’s essay “ Friendship ” is as beautiful and relevant today as it was when it was published in 1841. Throughout many of his works, Emerson reflects on cultivating the habit of being grateful for even the smallest things, and often focuses on the beauty of nature. Even though he is known for embracing solitude, in this classic essay Emerson proclaims his appreciation for his friends, writing “I awoke this morning with devout thanksgiving for my friends, old and new.” You can read this essay along with his more well-known “Self-Reliance” in this collection of essays, while simultaneously reflecting on relationships that you are grateful for in your own life.  Like Emerson says,”Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitude.”

2. Maya Angelou’s “On Aging”

In her marvelous poem “ On Aging ,” the great Angelou insists on being grateful for the ability to breathe, for that fact that you are living regardless of your age or physical condition. In this powerful piece Angelou righteously proclaims: 

“When my bones are stiff and aching, / And my feet won’t climb the stair, / I will only ask one favor: / Don’t bring me no rocking chair. / When you see me walking, stumbling, / Don’t study and get it wrong. / ‘Cause tired don’t mean lazy / And every goodbye ain’t gone. / I’m the same person I was back then, / A little less hair, a little less chin, / A lot less lungs and much less wind. / But ain’t I lucky I can still breathe in.”

3. Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women

In this classic novel that has been adapted multiple times for the screen, Alcott tells a story of sisterhood, selflessness, friendship, and love. 4. Emily Dickinson’s “Without This—there Is Nought”

Though Dickinson lived a very secluded and oftentimes lonely life, she was very grateful for her ability to write, which she reflected on in some of her work. In “Without This–there Is Nought,” she writes, “I wished a way might be / My Heart to subdivide— / ‘Twould magnify—the Gratitude— / And not reduce—the Gold—” You can purchase the complete poems of Emily Dickinson, including this one, here .

5. Henry David Thoreau’s Walden and Walking

Another renowned Transcendentalist, like Emerson, much of Thoreau’s writing reflects on the beauty of the natural world and the peace found in seclusion in nature. Thoreau reminds us of what is important:

“I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual. It is surprising how contented one can be with nothing definite – only a sense of existence. Well, anything for variety. I am ready to try this for the next ten thousand years, and exhaust it. How sweet to think of! my extremities well charred, and my intellectual part too, so that there is no danger of worm or rot for a long while. My breath is sweet to me. O how I laugh when I think of my vague indefinite riches. No run on my bank can drain it, for my wealth is not possession but enjoyment.”

6. Christina Rossetti’s “A Birthday”

Perhaps my favorite on this list, Rossetti’s “ A Birthday ” is a poem so ripe with fruitful diction you can taste it on your tongue. Rossetti sings of an overflowing richness of the heart in this beautiful piece: “My heart is like an apple-tree / Whose boughs are bent with thickset fruit;” Read this and the rest of Rossetti’s poems here .

Gratitude is not just a feeling we evoke out of necessity around the holidays, it is a way of living and thinking that can be cultivated in order to bring more joy and content to our lives. Reflecting through reading these 6 classic works of literature on gratitude and incorporating these ideas into our own lives is one way to bring about change and move toward a more positive and thoughtful way of living.

Will Smith is sharing his gratitude for Hollywood legend Jackie Chan on the actor's milestone 70th birthday.

The Oscar winner saluted Chan with a touching Instagram post on April 7, in which he thanked the actor for the "eternal impact" he's left on the Smith family. Smith's youngest child, son Jaden , 25, notably starred alongside Chan in the 2010 remake of The Karate Kid.

"Happy 70th (wow) Birthday to My Guy @jackiechan !! In addition to making some of my FAVORITE movies of all time, creating some of the CRAZIEST moments that have ever been captured on film — I thank you most for helpin’ to raise Jaden," Will, 55, captioned a series of photos featuring Jaden with Chan.

"Our time with you in Beijing during the Karate Kid left an eternal impact on our entire family. We wish you the deepest Love & Revelation on your next trip around the sun ☀️," he added.

Will's post was full of heartwarming snapshots of himself, Chan and Jaden — including a few of the trio on the set of the film, and one in particular where Will and Chan held up Jaden while behind the scenes in Beijing.

Chan — who is set to return to the next  Karate Kid  film alongside Ralph Macchio — spoke to George Lopez in 2010 about how Will "called my office" to present him the pitch for the 2010 blockbuster. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith served as producers for the film, which ended up grossing an estimated $359 million worldwide, per IMDB .

"I said, 'OK! Who's the teacher?' " Chan laughed at the time about Will's phone call. "I thought, 'I'm the karate kid!' "

"I already forget how old I am," he added. "I still think I'm the kid. He said, 'No, you're the teacher. My son's gonna be the Karate Kid .' "

On his 70th birthday, Chan shared a heartfelt post of his own on Instagram, expressing his gratitude for being “ able to grow old ” despite all the stunts he's taken on over the decades.

In a caption for the post, which included several images of Chan over the years, the actor explained that many of his friends had been reminding him that his 70th birthday was coming up.

"Every time I hear this number, my heart would stop for a second — l’m 70 years old already?” Chan began a lengthy caption. “After recovering from the shock, the second thing that would come to my mind is a saying that my big brother, Sammo Hung once said: ‘Being able to grow old is a fortunate thing.’ Especially for us stunt people, we don’t know how lucky we are to be able to grow old.”

Chan later added that recent photos of him circulating online with "white hair, white beard and [looking] old" are only for a character, and that he's “always been willing to try new things for a movie, no matter if it’s a challenging stunt or a breakthrough appearance for a character."

Addressing the photos he shared on his page, Chan wrote: “Looking at these photos brings back so many fond memories. All I can say is: I love making movies and I love you all. A big thank you to everyone for all your birthday wishes. Hope everyone stays happy and healthy!”

In April, Southern California Edison customers will see an $86 credit automatically appear on their monthly bill, while Southern California Gas customers will get a credit of $73.

Then, in October, Edison customers will see their bills drop by another $86.

Similar rebates are being doled out this year to customers of investor-owned utilities throughout California, with more than $1.6 billion due back to electric customers, $1 billion to natural gas customers and $160 million to small businesses.

These rebates are called “climate credits.” The state launched them a decade ago to offset how electricity and gas bills might otherwise be affected by the costs some companies pay to comply with California’s pioneering cap-and-trade program, which requires utilities and other industries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions to help fight climate change and clean the air.

Thanks to surging demand for the carbon pollution credits that fund these dividends (under a rather complex system we’ll get to soon), this year’s rebates are the biggest in the program’s 10-year history. And Danny Cullenward, a climate economist who serves on a committee that analyzes the state’s cap-and-trade program, said he expects utility customers to get even more money back in future years, as emissions rules get stricter for the roughly 450 electricity utilities, large industrial businesses and fuel suppliers that have to comply.

The credits have helped to prove wrong predictions some taxpayer and conservative groups made 15 years ago about how cap-and-trade would send utility bills through the roof. Analysis by the Legislative Analyst Office and other researchers shows that the program has actually had a net positive impact on Californian’s electric bills and has been nearly neutral for natural gas prices.

At the same time, cap-and-trade has helped reduce the carbon intensity of the state’s economy by 50.8% between 2000 and 2021, noted Katelyn Roedner Sutter, California state director for the Environmental Defense Fund. The program also has generated more than $10 billion for other climate efforts without slowing economic growth.

That doesn’t mean cap-and-trade doesn’t still face some real challenges.

Analysts say companies have banked too many inexpensive pollution credits, for example, which isn’t helping the state meet its emission targets for 2030. Also, while the cap-and-trade isn’t inflating utility rates, electric and gas bills do keep shooting up.  A recent report from the state utility commission shows Edison’s rates are up 91% over the past decade, now averaging $220 a month. More than one in five Edison customers have overdue payments, the report states, with late customers owing an average of $733 each.

Regulators say other climate-related factors are responsible for driving up those rates. That includes utilities paying to prevent and mitigate wildfires by spending millions to harden their systems and pay out settlements to victims of fires caused by their equipment. Regulators say rates also are spiking because utilities are paying for new power lines to keep up with the push for electrification and because they’re losing revenue to rooftop solar.

Ever-increasing rates are why Mark Toney, executive director of The Utility Reform Network, or TURN, said most people likely haven’t even noticed the climate credits they’ve received on their gas and electric bills over the past decade.

But all of these experts said they do see opportunities for legislative fixes and regulatory reforms to the cap-and-trade program that could force companies to cut emissions faster while helping Californians keep more money in their pockets.

What is cap-and-trade?

This all started with Assembly Bill 32 , also known as the California Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006.

The legislation set targets for California to reduce planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2020 — a goal the state met four years early. Next up is a goal to cut emissions 40% below 1990 levels by 2030, and to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.

To hit those goals, California in 2013 became the first state to launch a comprehensive cap-and-trade program . All oil refineries, large manufacturing facilities, and investor-owned utilities — roughly 450 entities that are collectively responsible for creating 75% to 85% of the state’s greenhouse gases as they operate — must comply with the program.

Here’s how it works.

The California Air Resources Board, or CARB, sets a declining cap on the total amount of greenhouse gas that can be emitted in the state each year. The hope is that oil companies, manufacturers and utilities will do all they can to reduce their emissions and stay below that collective cap.

But regulators know most companies aren’t there yet. So CARB also makes available a certain number of “allowances,” with each one carrying rights to emit one metric ton of carbon dioxide — about as much as a passenger car would emit while being driven from Los Angeles to Pittsburgh.

Most manufacturers and utilities get a share of allowances for free, while oil and other industrial sectors must buy credits at virtual auctions held once a quarter. Owners of a carbon credit can use it immediately, or bank it for future needs. (Companies can also buy “offsets,” which means paying to help preserve a forest or contribute to other programs that fight climate change, though those can only account for up to 4% of their emissions.)

Each year, the state carves out fewer allowances. Also, CARB raises the floor price of those allowances, while the statewide annual cap declines. And outside investors also can buy the allowances, then resell them to companies when they’re needed.

All of those conditions mean that prices and competition for carbon credits keep going up, which creates more incentive for companies to reduce their emissions and avoid allowances altogether.

During the state’s most recent auction, in February , more than 51 million allowances sold for $41 each, a total of nearly $2.1 billion. Auctions generate upwards of $4 billion in revenue a year.

The state’s portion of that money feeds into the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, which goes to communities to help them offer incentives for individuals to buy clean vehicles, plant trees, make their homes more energy efficient and fund other climate-related projects. Los Angeles County has received more than $2.3 billion in funds from the program to date, per a state dashboard , with $464 million has gone to Orange County, $458 million to San Bernardino County and $413 million to Riverside County.

About those rebates…

So where do the climate credits that most Californians will see on their utility bills in April come into play?

Lawmakers and regulators recognized when they were designing the cap-and-trade program that there was a potential for it to make utility bills soar. So they decided to have CARB give electric and natural gas utilities allowances for free each year. The utilities get to sell those allowances at auction , then use the proceeds to send rebates back to their customers.

Electric utilities send credits in April and October, while natural gas utilities only send them in April.

Public utilities, such as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, aren’t included in the program because they aren’t regulated by the state. But, this year, climate credits will be sent to more than 11 million residential electric customers, more than 1 million small business electric customers and more than 13 million residential natural gas customers.

Southwest Gas customers will see $75 rebates next month, while a total of $215 will be dropped from San Diego Gas & Electric bills by fall. Amounts vary between utilities, but all customers get the same amount from that company regardless of the size of their bill. On average, most people will see $146 rebates in April on their combined utility bills.

In past years, Edison rebates have ranged from $29 to $71. This year, they hit $86. If customers have a balance bigger than $86, utility spokesman Jeff Monford said the total due will drop by that amount. If they owe less than $86, Monford said, “The remaining credit gets rolled to the next month and will be applied on the following bill.”

The rebates keep going up because the price for allowances keeps going up, noted Terrie Prosper, spokesperson for the state utilities commission.

One factor that’s likely helping to drive up the price tag on allowances is talk of reforming the cap-and-trade program, Cullenward said. Since companies can bank as many allowances as they want for future use, he said it makes sense that they’d be trying to snap up whatever they can now in case the rules get stricter down the road.

The bad news about higher allowance prices is it means oil companies and other sectors will likely pass those increased costs off to customers. And while cap-and-trade hasn’t spiked utility bills, it has made other costs go up.

That includes the price of gasoline, which the air board estimates is up 27 cents a gallon (about 5% based on current prices) as a result of oil and gas companies passing along their costs to comply with cap-and-trade. But Cullenward notes that’s really a feature of the systen, not a bug, because the broader goal is to transition away from fossil fuels.

The good news about the rising cost of allowances is the greater incentive it creates for companies to pollute less. That means cleaner air and less of all the bad stuff that comes along with global warming, from extreme weather events to health risks to pricier groceries.

Also, the more expensive allowances get, the more money utility customers will get back in rebates each year.

Since most of the factors driving the surge in utility bills are tied to climate change, Cullenward sees an opportunity for the state to use cap-and-trade’s successful climate credit program to help make utility bills more affordable going forward.

That could mean the state giving utilities more free carbon polluting allowances, he said, which they would then have to auction off to create more revenue for rebates to customers. Or it could mean the state dedicating some portion of the revenue it gets from the rest of auction sales to climate credits instead of sending it all to the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund.

The utility reform group TURN is backing a bill from Assemblymember Al Muratsuchi, D-Torrance, that would use revenue from cap-and-trade to create a Climate Equity Trust Fund. The idea, Toney said, is to have utilities use money from that fund to help, say, build out electric charging stations for trucks in Ontario rather than having Edison pass those costs along to all ratepayers on their monthly bills.

Something’s gotta give when it comes to utility prices. So Toney said building on the successes of the cap-and-trade program just makes sense.

The epic weekend reaches its conclusion in philadelphia with plenty of wild action set for lincoln financial field on sunday.

After a chaotic finish to Night 1 of WrestleMania 40 , the stage is now set for Night 2 and things don't look great for Cody Rhodes. Rhodes is set to face undisputed WWE universal champion Roman Reigns in the main event, with the match being contested under "Bloodline Rules."

That stipulation was cemented for the bout between Rhodes and Reigns when Reigns and The Rock defeated Rhodes and Seth Rollins in the Night 1 main event. Now, as Rhodes challenges Reigns, the deck is stacked against the challenger with no disqualification rules in place as he hopes to avoid a repeat of his failure to defeat Reigns at WrestleMania 39.

Rollins will also be in action as he puts his world heavyweight championship on the line against Drew McIntyre. CM Punk will be on commentary for the match and given his rivalry with both Rollins and McIntyre will no doubt play a factor in the outcome.

LA Knight vs. AJ Styles:  Styles went after Knight's knee from the early moments of the match, grounding him and slowing things down. Knight hit a German suplex from the top rope but shortly after, Styles was back in control, again working over Knight's knee, including wrapping it around the ring post. After Knight fought back, he removed some of the ringside padding but Styles reversed a piledriver into a backdrop and nearly won by countout. Knight countered a springboard 450 by getting his knees up, Styles countered a BFT, nearly hitting a Styles Clash but Knight had a counter of his own. Moments later, Knight countered Styles again, this time setting up the match-winning BFT. The match was nothing special but was, at the same time, perfectly fine as a wrestling match. Knight was the right guy to get the win since he needed the boost and Styles is in the club of WWE's "made guys." LA Knight def. AJ Styles via pinfall. Grade: B-

The Final Testament (Karrion Kross & Authors of Pain) vs. Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford) (Philadelphia Street Fight): Final Testament quickly took out The Street Profits allowing them to triple team Lashley with kendo sticks. Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins tried to get back in the action only to take their own beatings from the AOP. After B-Fab and Scarlett both got involved, The Pride made their comeback with Lashley eventually locking in the Hurt Lock on Kross only for Scarlett to interfere again to make the save. Kross drove Lashley into a chair with a DDT but only got a two-count from special guest referee Bubba Ray Dudley, leading Kross to shove Dudley. Kross was then speared by Lashley. Dudley then instructed Lashley and the Profits on how to finish off the match, eventually leading to them getting tables -- the first of which broke as soon as Kross was placed on it -- and a Ford frogsplash to put Kross through the second finished things off. The match was a mess, and not in a fun way. Snoop Dogg on commentary was an active distraction and everything was clunky and did not work at all. Bobby Lashley & The Street Profits def. The Final Testament via pinfall. Grade: D

World Heavyweight Championship -- Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Damian Priest:  After the match, McIntyre went to the commentary desk and celebrated while jawing at CM Punk. After some back and forth, Punk swept McIntyre's legs out, causing him to fall on the desk. Punk took off the brace on his arm and smashed McIntyre in the face with it. This brought Priest running out from the back with his Money in the Bank briefcase. After smashing the briefcase on McIntyre's head, Priest cashed in, hit the South of Heaven chokeslam and pinned McIntyre to win the championship. Not much of a match to "grade" here, but the way this will fuel McIntyre's issues with Punk is certainly intriguing.  Damian Priest def. Drew McIntyre via pinfall to win the title. Grade: B

Huge Taiwan quake caused few deaths thanks to preparedness — and luck

TAIPEI, Taiwan — Motorcyclists waited calmly on a bridge as it rocked violently ; nurses looking after a group of infants quickly pushed their cribs together to protect them from falling objects; a trio of hikers on top of Taiwan’s tallest mountain sat still until the tremor was over ; and rescue workers pulled residents out of partially collapsed and dangerously listing buildings.

When a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Taiwan on Wednesday morning, it was scenes of composure such as these, rather than mass panic, that stood out across the island of 23 million people.

It was the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan in 25 years, triggering hundreds of aftershocks and landslides. Yet as of Thursday, only 10 people in the worst-hit region of Hualien County, home to more than 300,000, had died.

That’s because Taiwan, which sits in the world’s most seismically active zone , has had years of practice and preparation for exactly this kind of scenario.

Experts credit stricter building codes , extensive evacuation and disaster drills that begin in primary school, a honed disaster-response strategy — and a fair amount of luck — for the low death toll of Wednesday’s quake .

“Although it seems like a long time, in the past 25 years Taiwan has actually made great progress,” said Hsin-yu Shan, associate professor of civil engineering at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University.

On Thursday, rescue teams were working to free more than 700 people who remained trapped in a national park in Hualien, the epicenter of the quake. Forecasts of rain raised concerns about more landslides.

More than 1,000 people were injured in Wednesday’s quake, mostly by falling rocks, according to Taiwan’s fire department.

Rescue efforts have been complicated by a large number of aftershocks — at least 324 — in Hualien County, a scenic coastal region popular with tourists and hikers, where the damage has been the heaviest. Taiwan officials said aftershocks of magnitudes of 6.5 to 7.0 were possible over the next three days.

Residents in Hualien said rescue workers moved quickly to evacuate them from damaged buildings.

The nine-story Uranus Building, an apartment complex, was among several buildings that partially collapsed and were left tilting dangerously as emergency workers raced to find those inside.

Yu Yang, a 27-year-old delivery worker who lives in the building, found herself pinned between her closet and table as the building suddenly tilted following a strong aftershock.

“I felt helpless and couldn’t move at all,” she said. Within about three hours, two rescue workers climbed into her apartment and used their own safety rope to lower her to the ground.

“The government’s response has been very quick, and they’ve worked very hard. It was really dangerous, but the search and rescue workers were willing to climb in,” she said.

Of the 75 people in the building, 74 were accounted for and safe. One woman who died is suspected of having gone back into the building for her cat and was pinned down by falling debris.

Rescue efforts are now focused on the Taroko Gorge national park, where hundreds of hotel workers and tourists remain trapped after the entrance was blocked by fallen rocks.

More than 15 people were also still missing in the gorge, the fire department said Thursday, and rescue workers were using drones and helicopters to search the area.

Drone footage posted by Taiwan’s interior minister, Lin Yu-chang, showed some of the residents trapped in the park under a damaged but intact metal tunnel, waving at the camera.

The quake, which occurred just before 8 a.m. Wednesday and which the U.S. Geological Survey measured at 7.4 in magnitude, was felt across Taiwan and as far away as China’s southeastern provinces. It triggered tsunami warnings in Japan and the Philippines that were later lifted.

The last time Taiwan saw a quake this strong was in 1999, when a 7.6-magnitude temblor struck central Taiwan, killing more than 2,400 people.

After that earthquake, authorities mandated stricter building codes that require new structures be able to withstand quakes up to what Taiwan defines as a level six intensity, where violent shaking makes it difficult to stand and some buildings may be damaged.

Shan, the professor of civil engineering, said the government has strengthened the earthquake resistance of schools and hospitals, adding that “99 percent of the schools in Taiwan comply with existing codes.”

Since 2019, the government has also been reviewing 36,000 buildings across Taiwan that were built before 1999 and giving subsidies to upgrade them.

Even before the 1999 quake, Taiwan had implemented earthquake building codes modeled after those in the United States. They have been upgraded as researchers learned from quakes elsewhere, such as an 8.0-magnitude Mexico City earthquake in 1985, in which reverberations in soft soil caused more damage, a phenomenon also present in the Taipei Basin in northern Taiwan.

“Taiwan has had remarkable discipline in their seismic building codes, and enforcement of those codes,” said Joseph Barbera, an associate professor at George Washington University who was deployed by USAID to Taiwan after the 1999 quake.

He noted that Taiwan had also built up a strong emergency response system, including response centers that are specially constructed to move with the ground as it shakes during an earthquake.

“The Taiwanese should be commended for their risk reduction as well as their effective response,” he said.

Disaster awareness has also improved among the public. A promotional quiz sponsored by the National Fire Agency last year asked residents questions such as whether they should open the door as soon as an earthquake hits. (The answer is no.) The average score among more than 200,000 test takers was 90 percent.

Taiwan’s all-important advanced computer chip industry has also had years to prepare. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world’s top maker of high-tech chips, based in central Taiwan, said its facilities were not seriously damaged by Wednesday’s earthquake.

Within 10 hours of the earthquake, 70 percent of production had been restored, the company said in a statement late Wednesday. None of the company’s high-end “lithography” machines, among the most complex pieces of equipment in the world, were damaged, TSMC said.

The emergency response was not always perfect, residents have pointed out. At least seven counties received no early-warning alert, triggering widespread criticism. Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration apologized, saying that it underestimated the scale of the earthquake and did not send an alert.

On Thursday, more than 300 households in Hualien still did not have power, and almost 10,000 homes in the area have lost access to running water, according to Taiwan’s Economic Affairs Ministry.

Schools and businesses in Hualien reopened Thursday, and the local railway line also resumed operation. Aftershocks continued to be felt throughout Taiwan, prompting the Central Weather Administration to say that it would no longer announce tremors smaller than magnitude 3.o.

In Hualien, where residents are accustomed to earthquakes, many were still shocked by the strength of the temblor. Andy Liu, 37, who lives in Jian Township, was waiting outside a clinic when it struck.

“It started to shake, and I felt something was off,” he said. “It was shaking so hard I couldn’t stand up.”

Luck also played a major role in the relatively low death toll of the quake, experts pointed out. It struck in the morning, when many people were heading to work and not at home.

Moreover, the epicenter was located off the coast, rather than on land, and was near one of Taiwan’s least densely populated regions.

“If this Hualien earthquake were to happen in Taipei, it is a certainty that the situation will be even worse than the Noto earthquake,” said Johnson Kung, a board member of the Taiwan Professional Civil Engineers Association, referring to a 7.6-magnitude quake that hit Japan in January and killed more than 200 people.

Dawn Staley entered rare territory when she won her third national championship on Sunday. After her South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Iowa Hawkeyes 87-75 , she became the fifth coach in Division I women's college basketball history to capture three titles and she did it finishing a perfect 38-0.

But her opponent also made history this season. Iowa's Caitlin Clark became college basketball's all-time leading scorer and smashed several other records in her senior year. She is widely expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft next week and has already become a household name with her long list of sponsorships.

In her national championship speech, Staley applauded Clark, who finished with 30 points, eight rebounds and five assists in the finale, for the impact she's made in women's college basketball.

"I want to personally thank Caitlin Clark for lifting up our sport," the coach said. "She carried a heavy load for our sport and it just is not gonna stop here on the collegiate tour. But when she is the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft, she's gonna lift that league up as well. So Caitlin Clark if you're out there, you are one of the GOATs of our game. We appreciate you."

A day earlier, Staley said to be in the GOAT conversation , a player has to have a ring. “I mean, she’s really damn good regardless,” Staley said of Clark. “But winning the championship would seal the deal."

Before taking the stage to receive the trophy, Staley was choked up with emotion while speaking with ESPN's Holly Rowe. She pinched her eyes and bent over while Aliyah Boston, her former player and current WNBA star who had broadcast duties this week, put her arm around her for support.

When she finally caught her breath, Staley explained how part of why this title feels so special is because last year, South Carolina's undefeated season was squashed by Iowa in the Final Four. In the revenge tour, the Gamecocks had a completely new starting five, including senior center Kamilla Cardoso and transfer guard Te-Hina Paopao .

"I'm so incredibly happy for our players. It doesn't always end like you want it to end, much like last year, but my freshies are at the top of my heart because they wanted this," Staley said while her players were Swag Surfin' behind her. "I hope we can erase whatever pain they had last year experiencing not being able to finish it here."

The Gamecocks are the tenth team in Division I women's college basketball history to finish a season undefeated. Staley was awe-struck at how they bounced back.

"They made history. They etched their names in the history books when this is the unlikeliest group to do it," Staley said. "God is funny like that. He's funny. He rips your heart out and he makes you believe. He makes you believe the unimaginable."

“[G]ratitude makes us appreciate the value of something, and when we appreciate the value of something, we extract more benefits from it; we’re less likely to take it for granted,” says Robert Emmons, professor of psychology and gratitude expert at the University of California (cited in Brown, 2021, p. 213).

With gratitude, we become greater participants in our lives, celebrating goodness rather than reacting to it. And what’s more, it’s not passive; it’s something we can invest in and grow, letting it positively impact our relationships and environment (Seligman, 2011; Brown, 2021).

As such, gratitude is a “way of doing, trying, failing, and trying again,” says author and research professor Brené Brown (Brown, 2021, p. 214). We can learn to be equally gracious to ourselves and others and accept that we are a work in progress, attempting to act with gratitude in our daily lives.

But how do you show your gratitude?

Strength expert Ryan Niemiec describes gratitude as when you “regularly experience and express thankfulness,” “don’t take the good things that happen in your life for granted,” and “tend to feel blessed in many circumstances” (Niemiec, 2019, p. 10).

For Professor Martin Seligman (2011), one of the founders of positive psychology, gratitude is enduring thankfulness, with messages of gratitude being expressed to someone that we appreciate as helping or positively influencing our lives and yet have never been properly thanked. It could be as simple as a text message or note given to a friend saying thanks for always being there or a colleague for helping you out of a tight spot.

Because of the many responses he received from the homework and a wealth of findings from controlled studies, he identified that “not only did the writer’s happiness scores go up, their scores on depression were lowered for at least a month following the exercise” (Tomasulo, 2020, p. 129).

While there are several activities surrounding gratitude, letter writing is one of the most commonly researched and validated. And while its positive effect on gratitude, happiness, and wellbeing are profound, it can be summarized by the following three steps (modified from Niemiec, 2018; Seligman, 2011):

  • Step one – take a moment to think about someone who has positively impacted your life (whether in the short or long term) that you appreciate, yet may not have thanked properly.
  • Step two – write that person a letter describing how you feel about what they have done for you and why you are grateful to them. Seligman describes it as follows, it “should be concrete and about three hundred words: be specific” and mention how often you remember what they did (Seligman, 2011, p. 30).

Rather than a simple thank you for being there, it is best to create a narrative. It may help to reflect on the following questions (modified from Intelligent Change, n.d.):

How and when did you both meet? What are your earliest memories of your relationship? How was your life at the time? What has that person done for you? How did that make you feel then and now? What do they mean to you?

  • Step three – while this may not always be an option-or at times the right thing to do-Seligman suggests you take time reading the letter and watch for the other person’s reactions and your own. And then, when finished, discuss the content with them (Seligman, 2011).

Niemiec (2018) points out that the three steps involve more than the strength, or process of, gratitude alone. Writing and sharing gratitude letters engages other character strengths, such as love, perspective, and social intelligence . And undoubtedly, delivering and reading your letter to that person requires bravery and zest .

Writing such a letter is almost always a valuable exercise, increasing gratitude and other positive emotions. However, we cannot guarantee the response the letter receives. There may be occasions when the activity should finish at step two due to safety issues or the risk of unwanted consequences (Niemiec, 2018).

A gratitude letter to a boss

Whether recently or in our earlier careers, we typically remember those bosses that supported us along our professional path or as we faced difficult times in our personal lives.

Treat the following example as a possible template for use in writing a gratitude letter to your boss (past or present). The details, thoughts, and emotions can be added to, removed, swapped around, or embellished upon as appropriate (modified from Hamadey, 2020).

Dear [first name]

I’ve been looking back on all stages of my career and thinking of people who made an impact. You are very high up on the list.

I loved working alongside you at [company name] and felt like your talent, experience, work ethic, and creative ideas lifted me up.

You gave me priceless advice that helped me progress through my career.

When my mother was taken ill, you gave me the time I needed to support my family and get back on my feet.

Sending a letter to parents can be a great way of capturing our feelings and sharing our appreciation for them. More personal than the last example, reflect, reuse, and modify some of the following points to capture how you feel about them (modified from Psaila, 2020):

  • Taking my sadness and making it your own
  • Easing each and every burden
  • Sharing my tears with me
  • Your beautiful way of living life
  • Having the absolute kindest heart
  • Teaching me what being a good person truly means

Dear Mum and Dad,

Our close friends deserve our highest gratitude. They are there when we most need them and can be as close as family – and sometimes more so. While similar to family letters, they may seem more lighthearted and less formal – depending on how you relate to each person, for example (modified from Mayne, 2020):

Friends like you come along once in a lifetime.

I just want you to know how much I appreciate you and your friendship. Whenever I see something that makes me laugh, I want you to be the first to know. It’s wonderful to know that you care enough to stick by my side through the good times and the bad.

In all its forms, showing gratitude and messages of appreciation should ultimately be unburdening, focusing on positive emotions, memories, and thoughts rather than any wrongdoings (Tomasulo, 2020).

Identifying and using the strength of gratitude, has important valuable associations with other mental and physical factors, including (modified from Niemiec, 2018, p. 12):

  • Life satisfaction
  • Prosocial behavior
  • Increased cardiovascular and immune functioning
  • Lower levels of anxiety and depression
  • Kindness and compassion

Gratitude–both as a strength and an emotion–can be boosted easily with practice. Indeed, gratitude letter writing is so beneficial because research has shown it promotes gratitude, encourages the appreciation of others in your life, and strengthens relationships (Niemiec, 2018).

While writing gratitude letters is an inherently valuable gratitude exercise for both the sender and the receiver, shorter notes (even electronic ones) and cards can be equally powerful. Signature strengths expert, Ryan Niemiec, suggests that you “share your appreciation on a post-it note that you put on someone’s desk as a surprise or send it in a spontaneous email” (Niemiec, 2018, p. 42).

Cards or notes sharing gratitude can be brief – they simply need to be honest and heartfelt. Indeed, it is not necessary to describe everything the person has done for us; it could just be a few sentences as a reminder of when their impact was the greatest and how it made us feel.

Also, while we should try to adopt timely appreciation, there is no statute of limitations on gratitude. A teacher will still be overjoyed to receive a note of thanks from a student from twenty years ago (Hamadey, 2020).

Positive Psychology & Gratitude Letter Writing

Positive psychology recognizes the importance of relationships. In fact, make up the ‘R’ in Martin Seligman’s model of wellbeing, ‘PERMA’ – the others being positive emotions, engagement, meaningful living, and achievement or accomplishment (Seligman, 2011).

For relationships to be at their best, it is helpful to refocus positively–and with appreciation–on their past, present, and future, especially when going through a tough time. After all, while our relationships have the power to boost wellbeing and increase happiness, they are also “a major part of the cause for people to slip into depression” (Tomasulo, 2020, p. 128). Gratitude can help develop new relationships and maintain existing ones.

Not only that, in a 2005 study, Seligman compared writing gratitude letters with other positive psychological interventions and found they offered the greatest initial increase of happiness.

While gratitude may not cure mental illness, it is a vital, life-enhancing emotion and a practice that can enrich our lives in meaningful ways (Brown, 2021).

  • Replacing Non-Grateful Thoughts With Grateful Thoughts While gratitude is a basic human emotion, ungratefulness has been described as the solvent of social bonds and an assault on flourishing human life (Mikoski, 2011).
